00:09Welcome to part 4 of the Pocket Pony series. In this video tutorial, we are going to crochet
00:15the mane and the tail. Just as a friendly reminder, there is a PDF pattern download
00:21for this pattern. It includes two versions of the Pocket Pony and it is also ad-free,
00:28printable, easy to read, and has lots of photo references. If you're interested, the link
00:33to the PDF pattern is in the description. Now, let's get started.
00:45For this next part, we're going to work on the horse's tail and the mane. I have actually two
00:53versions of this pattern. The first version is the original version that I'm showing you here
00:59and it includes individual strands for the mane and for the tail as you can see. Now, if you get
01:08the PDF pattern, I also include a bonus second version which includes what I call the bumps
01:16version. So, it has little bumps for the mane and little bumps for the tail. Now, the bumps version
01:23is ideal for single skein mane and tail. So, you're not going to be switching colors. You could use a
01:33variegated yarn color here. Like, I have one that's light blue with some dark blue specks and some white
01:40specks to give it a nice look or textured look. But again, it's more suitable for a single skein of
01:49yarn.
01:50Whereas, for the strands version, as you can see here, it's great for using multi-colored or multiple
02:01skeins and you can easily do multiple colors this way. All right. So, we're going to begin on
02:10the video instructions for the strands version. And again, if you'd like to also crochet this version
02:18of the horse, go ahead and check out the PDF pattern. Let's get started.
02:26Let's crochet the tail. For the tail, we're going to start between round seven and eight in the stitch
02:34in the very back center of the body. Counting from the beginning, that's round one, two, three, four, five,
02:42six, seven, and eight. So, right between seven and eight here. I'm going to insert my hook
02:50and go ahead and pull through with the yarn color that you want. You can make this a multi-colored
02:57tail.
02:58But I'm going to start with pink here. So, for each strand, you're going to simply pull yarn through
03:06and chain eight. That's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. After you make eight chains,
03:18we're going to single crochet back in each of these chains, starting with the second chain from the hook.
03:25So, insert your hook into that second chain from the hook, make a single crochet,
03:31and then single crochet in each of the remaining chains.
03:52At this point, you can either fasten off with a long tail for weaving in or you can insert your
04:00hook
04:01directly into the same stitch and pull through with a different color. So, I'm actually going to
04:09switch over to using blue now. And I'm going to pull through with blue as my new color.
04:19So, now I'm going to repeat the directions for the next strand with eight chains. Two, three, four,
04:30five, six, seven, and eight. And now, again, I'm going to single crochet back towards the chain,
04:39starting from the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in each of these chains.
04:45two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. And again, I'm going to slip stitch.
05:15back into that same stitch when I'm done and attach a brand new color. All right, I snipped off the
05:24yarn
05:25ends for the pink and blue yarn. And now, I'm attaching the last color, purple here.
05:34And again, we're going to chain eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, and seven, eight. And now,
05:46in the second chain from the hook, we're going to single crochet and single crochet in each chain,
05:53leading back down towards the body.
06:14After you get back towards the body, you're just going to simply slip stitch
06:19into the same stitch.
06:24And we're going to fasten off with a long tail for weaving in.
06:34I do have a lot of yarn ends here, so I'm going to have to weave those in in a
06:40bit.
06:42All right. So, um, a super easy and quick way to weave in is to first secure your ends by
06:50tying the, um, tail-
06:54same color tail ends together. So, I'm tying the pink tail ends together right now.
07:05You want to make sure it's tight. And then, I'm going to then snip off the ends here. Give it
07:15a nice,
07:17clean look.
07:32Be very careful when you are tying the, um, push yarn because it is susceptible to breaking and you
07:43don't want the thread to break on you too quickly. I've had it happen before where it breaks before
07:52I'm ready to tie it and cut it. And I have to kind of start over, which is always time
08:01consuming.
08:10After you finish kind of weaving in, you'll have these funky looking strands. You can then curl them
08:17manually by, um, kind of twisting each strand some more to give it a nice curl and just kind of
08:34manipulate
08:35them with your fingers to position them the way that you want. For instance, I don't like my tail
08:42sticking straight up. So, I'm just going to kind of move it to, um, give it this downward angle.
08:51All right. And when you're happy with it, you can continue on with the next part.
09:02Let's go ahead and crochet the mane of the horse. We're going to start from the, um, top of the
09:09head,
09:10moving back towards the back of the head and, um, down towards the body. So, up here, we're going to
09:18start,
09:18um, by inserting this hook under a stitch in round seven of the head. Counting from the front, that's
09:27one, two, three, four, five, six, and seven. So, here, let's go ahead and insert our hook underneath that
09:39stitch in round seven. And I'm just inserting my hook between the ears to make sure I have, um, the
09:47main
09:47centered. Let's double check placement here. All right. Yep. I think this is about right.
09:56Now, I'm going to pull through the yarn I want to use. I'm going to begin with some pink yarn
10:01here.
10:03After you pull some yarn through the stitch, we're going to chain five. That's one, two, three, oops,
10:12three, four, and five. Then, starting from the second chain from the hook, we're going to make a single crochet.
10:22That's one single crochet. And then go ahead and go back towards the, um, head with two single crochets,
10:32three single crochets, three single crochets, and four single crochets at the end here.
10:42Now, we're going to slip stitch back into the same stitch,
10:49like so.
10:54And we can go ahead and fasten off with the tail. It'll be used for weaving in later.
11:05If you want to weave it in now, I'll go ahead and show you what that'll look like.
11:10I like to pull the yarn through. Um, let's see. Let's pull one end through to the other side.
11:22Like so.
11:26And, um, you can also tie the two yarn tails together.
11:45And I like to snip off the ends a little bit so they're not super long.
11:54And I just use my scissors to poke them back into the hole,
12:02hiding them inside the head.
12:05So that's that for the very first curl. And you are going to kind of use your fingers to manually
12:14curl that into a little puffy strand.
12:18After you make the first strand, we're going to work back towards the head.
12:23The back of the head.
12:24And, um, we're moving from stitch to stitch.
12:27So here we were in round seven. Our next strand will come out of round eight.
12:33Then after that, round nine.
12:35Then round 10.
12:38And since round 10 is the last stitch in the head, we're going to jump to the other side of
12:42round 10.
12:44And then it's the other side of round nine.
12:47Now, you're welcome to do it, um, however you like in terms of the length of your strands.
12:56For this one, for instance, oops, getting rid of some fuzz here.
13:02Um, I went from chaining five to chaining six, chaining seven.
13:09As you can see, these strands are getting progressively longer.
13:14Chaining eight.
13:17Oops, sorry. This one is also chain seven. Excuse me.
13:20So chain five, six, seven, seven.
13:25And then this one is six.
13:27And this one is five.
13:30So if you'd like to have a variation of lengths, you can do that.
13:36Um, you are welcome to kind of explore and, um, see what suits your unicorn.
13:50But for this little guy here, I'm going to demo using chain fives only.
13:56So for each of these strands, I'm going to make them the same length.
13:59Just chain five and then single crochet, uh, four back starting on the second chain from the hook.
14:07So I'm going to do a couple more here.
14:09So you can take a look at how, um, we work through towards the back of the head.
14:16Inserting my hook under a stitch in round eight now.
14:19I'm going to pull yarn through.
14:24I'm going to use purple yarn here.
14:29Pulling it through for five chains now.
14:33One, two, three, four, five.
14:38And now in the second chain from the hook, I'm going to single crochet
14:43and single crochet in each of the remaining chains.
15:00Again, slip stitch back into the same stitch in the head.
15:07And we're going to fasten off with a bit of a tail for sewing or for weaving in.
15:20I'm pulling the yarn tail through from back to front here.
15:25And then tie the two ends together.
15:44Trimming the ends.
15:49And stuffing them into the head.
16:05Again, you're going to manually twist the strands
16:09so that they have sort of this nice puffy, um, or curled up look.
16:16And now I'm going to continue on with the next, um, stitch.
16:23I'm going into round nine now, and I'm going to attach some blue yarn for that.
16:37Chain five.
16:42Slip single crochet in the second chain from the hook.
16:46And each of the remaining chains back towards the body.
17:05Now I'm going to slip stitch back into the same stitch.
17:11And fasten off with a bit of a tail for weaving in.
17:34Here's a look at the finished mane.
17:37I have six strands total, starting with the one on the forehead.
17:43Here's a comparison view of the horse that has different length strands.
17:49As you can see, some are shorter like the one in front,
17:52and some are longer like the one in the center of the, um, mane.
18:00And it depends on what kind of look you're going for,
18:03but I, um, demoed the one with even strands throughout.
18:08I think it has a neater look.
18:13Anyhow, lots of customization as you can see.
18:20Thank you so much for watching my video tutorial and crocheting along with me.
18:25I hope you had fun making your little horse.
