The Granny Square Necklace is
Transcript
00:08Today we're going to learn how to crochet the granny square necklace. It is a cute little
00:14accessory made using two granny squares, as you can see, and it's a fun little pouch that you can
00:20wear around your neck and close up just like this. Now you can also make it in so many different
00:29ways by making it into a keychain with a shorter loop if you want or a little accessory for your
00:36purse or bag. You can also use a variety of different colors as you can see. If you use solid
00:42colors it really focuses on the texture of the piece and if you'd like to you can add fun things
00:50like buttons, beads, or even a tassel. And if you would like to you can also crochet in a slightly
00:58different way by modifying the pattern to put the loops on the center of an edge making it into a
01:06square shaped necklace instead of a diamond shaped necklace. This pattern is quick and easy to make
01:13and it is completely no sew. So you really only need yarn, a hook, and scissors to crochet these.
01:21The free written pattern is available to view on my blog and if you'd like to support me as a
01:27pattern
01:27designer I also have a pdf download available. The pdf pattern includes a lot of photo references to
01:34guide you through the crochet process. It's also printable and ad-free. Thank you so much for
01:41supporting me and without further ado let's jump into the materials and start on this pattern.
02:09For round one you're going to start with the center of the flower. I'm using yellow here.
02:15You're going to begin with a magic ring and in the magic ring you're going to single crochet eight.
02:21So here's my slip knot to start my magic ring and now we're going to insert eight single crochets.
02:29That's one two three
02:38four five six seven and eight. Then you're going to tighten your ring
02:53and to finish off you're going to insert a slip stitch into the first single crochet that you made.
03:04And before you finish the slip stitch I'm actually going to join the next color for my um
03:10granny square here. For round two I'm going to make the petals of the flower using pink. So I'm going
03:17to join
03:18using um the pink yarn. Finishing off the slip stitch in round one like so. And here we're going to
03:27start with
03:28some double crochet clusters. For the very first one you're going to chain three. That acts as the first um
03:37double crochet cluster portion. And then you're going to yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch,
03:45yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, go through the first two loops.
03:52Don't finish your double crochet yet. We're going to do this again two more times. So yarn over, insert,
04:00pull out your loop, go into the first two loops. Now you have three loops on your hook.
04:15I'm going to yarn over and pull through all four loops. Then you're going to chain two.
04:23And we're going to do double crochet clusters all the way around. Now that was three double crochet
04:30clusters together because the starting chain counted as the fourth one. But for these consequent
04:37clusters for the next seven you're going to do um four double crochet clusters. So we're going to yarn
04:44over and I'll show you that in slow motion again. Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up
04:52a loop,
04:53yarn over, go through the first two loops. All right two loops on your hook. We're going to repeat this
05:00three more times for a total of four times. Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch,
05:06yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, go through the first two loops.
05:12Now i have three loops on my hook, yarn over, insert into the same stitch, yarn over, pull through a
05:19loop,
05:19yarn over, go through the first two loops. Four loops on my hook, yarn over, insert my hook into
05:26the same stitch yarn over pull up a loop yarn over go through the first tubes now i have five
05:32loops
05:32on my hook as you can see here and i'm going to yarn over go through all five loops you
05:38can give
05:38your hook a little wiggle if it's having a hard time going through and then you're going to chain
05:44two to close off and we're repeating this all the way around so we're making these double crochet
05:52clusters and two chains in between so that's one two three and four
06:08and i'm going to go through my whole double crochet cluster here chain two and starting on my next one
06:18one two
06:24three and four and going through all of the loops chain two
06:40again we're going to repeat this all the way around until we have eight double crochet clusters
06:50here is a look at round two with my eight petals and or my eight double crochet clusters and my
06:59final
06:59chain two here now i'm going to join with a slip stitch to the very top of the double crochet
07:06or
07:06the first double crochet cluster i made
07:12like so and then what i'm going to do is i'm going to insert my hook into the chain two
07:19gap
07:20as you can see it's the chain two gap between the two double crochet clusters
07:27and in this chain two gap i'm going to join with new yarn and that's going to be starting round
07:34three
07:34so i'm going to start round three or i'm going to use white for round three so joining with white
07:41here
07:43and now inside this chain two gap is where we're going to work the next stitches we're going to start
07:51with five chains that's one two three four and five and that's three chains um that will be the first
08:01double crochet in two chains that are going to act as the chain two gap in between it's going to
08:07make
08:08sense in a little bit but we're essentially making part of the corner of the granny square right now and
08:15what you're going to do is insert three double crochets into this same chain two space so i'm
08:21going to work three double crochets right in here that's one
08:32two
08:38and three oops
08:53and then you're going to work three double crochets in the next chain two gap
09:00so don't go into any of the double crochet clusters here you're just going to work in the chain two
09:05gaps
09:07so in here i'm going to put one two and three double crochets
09:17and that's that in the next chain two gap we're going to make another corner
09:22that's going to be three double crochets two chains and three double crochets
09:30here i have my three double crochets made so i'm going to chain two now one and two and then
09:38insert three
09:39more double crochets
09:47as you can see when you do that your piece makes this nice little 90 degree shape
09:54and that's the corner of your granny square
09:58now we're going to insert three double crochets into the next chain two gap
10:13make a corner into the next chain two cap
10:17so three double crochets two chains and three double crochets again
10:29so
10:36so
10:36so
10:36so
10:36so
10:55Then you're going to insert 3 double crochets into the next chain 2 gap.
11:11And then another corner into the next chain 2 gap.
11:16Again, that's 3 double crochets, 2 chains, and 3 double crochets.
11:38And in the last chain 2 gap, you're going to insert 3 double crochets.
11:51And remember the first double crochet you made with the chain 3?
11:58You're going to insert now the final 2 double crochets to make up that last corner.
12:06So go into that first chain 2 gap that you made your first stitches in for round 3.
12:14And in that first chain 2 gap, you're going to insert 2 final double crochets.
12:30After you do that, you're going to join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3.
12:38So here are the 2 chains of my chain 5.
12:42We want to keep those open.
12:44So go into that top of the third chain there.
12:50Like so.
12:52And that is going to be that for your little granny square.
12:59Tighten your ring if your magic ring in the beginning got loosened up.
13:10Here's the square a little cleaned up with the ends woven in.
13:15Tied back and cut off.
13:18Now that you have finished your granny square, instead of fastening off,
13:23we're going to continue with a few instructions to make the granny square necklace.
13:27If this is the first square you've made, you're going to use this piece to make the long necklace loop.
13:35So here's what it'll look like.
13:39I'm going to start in the chain 2 gap here.
13:43So I want to insert my hook into the chain 2 gap and pull through for a slip stitch.
13:50Like so.
13:51Now in this, now that we're here, we're going to make a long necklace loop.
13:57So make as many chains as you want until you get the desired length.
14:07Alright, so I made a long chain of 25, almost 26 inches.
14:14And you'll want to go as, you can do longer or shorter depending on how long you want your necklace
14:20to be.
14:21And once you're at the satisfied length, you can go ahead and make a slip stitch back into the same
14:29chain 2 gap.
14:30Now you want to make sure that your chain isn't twisted.
14:34So I'm going to kind of hold onto the front of the chain here and feel my way through.
14:43Making sure it is straightened out before I slip stitch back into the chain 2 gap.
14:53If it's twisted, it's not going to feel super comfortable on your neck.
15:00So here, I'm going to just pull through for a chain 2 gap.
15:05And that's that.
15:08You can now fasten off with a long tail.
15:11And you're going to use that long tail for weaving in later.
15:20And after you've made your first square, you can actually stop there if you want to have a very flat,
15:29decorative granny square necklace.
15:32But if you want to make the pouch, then go ahead and crochet another one of these granny squares the
15:40exact same weight.
15:42Use the exact same yarn and hook size so that you come up with the exact same size for your
15:49square.
15:49And you want to do the same size so that you can match it up.
15:54And I'll show you how to crochet the loop for the second square.
16:02Here is the second granny square complete.
16:06What you're going to do is insert your hook into the chain 2 cap and pull through for a slip
16:12stitch.
16:16Then instead of a very long loop like you did for the necklace side, you're going to make a short
16:23loop of only 8 chains.
16:26That's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
16:32Then you're going to slip stitch into the same chain 2 gap.
16:48And now what we're going to do is we're going to slip stitch in each stitch until you reach the
16:55corner.
16:56So let's go ahead and slip stitch across until we reach that chain 2 gap.
17:01Then we're going to stitch the 2 pieces together.
17:05So now going down each stitch here, we're going to slip stitch and slip stitch, slip stitch.
17:33And now when we get into that chain 2 gap, you're going to get the wrong side of your piece,
17:40your 2 pieces together.
17:44You want to make sure that the necklace loop and the little shorter loop side are both matching.
17:52You want to have them on the same side.
17:56And when you insert your hook into that chain 2 gap for your front piece, you're going to go into
18:02the chain 2 gap in the back piece as well.
18:07So here is what it will look like.
18:11Now let's slip stitch together.
18:16And then make a chain.
18:19And then make a slip stitch into that chain 2 gap.
18:24And now we're going to slip stitch in each stitch for these 2 edges, except you're going through both the
18:34front and the back pieces.
18:36So we're essentially kind of slip stitching them together, like sewing them together.
18:41So now I'm going to slip stitch.
18:50In the next pair of stitches, slip stitch.
18:56Go into the next pair of stitches, slip stitch.
19:01And continue until you reach the chain 2 gap.
19:06In the gap, we're going to slip stitch, chain, and slip stitch, all in the same chain 2 gap.
19:25So now that I'm here, going into the chain 2 gap, I'm going to slip stitch, chain, and slip stitch.
19:35And now, working on the other side, the other edge here, let's go ahead and insert the hook into both
19:45pairs of stitches, front and back, and slip stitch across.
20:19And in this final step, we're going to slip stitch.
20:21In this final chain 2 gap, you're going to slip stitch, chain, and slip stitch.
20:30Now, don't fasten off yet.
20:32We've got this final edge to go, except we are not going to be crocheting both pieces together any longer.
20:41Only crochet into the front piece.
20:45Don't touch that back piece.
20:46So here, I'm going to insert my hook into the next stitch, in the front piece only, and make a
20:54slip stitch.
20:56Into the next one, and slip stitch.
21:00And work this until you reach the hanging loop.
21:04Or, not the hanging loop, sorry.
21:07Just the loop.
21:18Oops.
21:20This looks kind of hard to get into.
21:28Alright.
21:31And I've slip stitched into the chain 2 gap for a good measure.
21:36Now, you're going to fasten off with a long yarn tail that you are going to use for weaving in
21:42later.
21:46So, when you weave it in, let me just pull it back for now.
21:55Yeah, we'll pretend by pulling them in for now.
21:58So, I wanted to show you what the little pouch looks like at this time.
22:04You'll see that the opening on top leaves the two top edges open.
22:10The two bottom edges are crocheted together, like so.
22:18And, now that you have this nice long necklace and the shorter loop in front, you can go ahead and
22:25put whatever little treasure you want into your necklace here.
22:29Or, into the pouch section.
22:32Then, take the end of your necklace and push it through the little loop in the front, like so.
22:45And, you can wear your necklace while the top is closed, looped together.
22:59Let's make a little tassel for your granny square necklace.
23:04Go ahead and find a piece of hard material that is going to be about the length of the tassel
23:11that you want.
23:12Make sure it's just a tad longer because you can always trim the ends of your tassel to make it
23:17shorter.
23:18So, when you're ready, go ahead and grab the yarn you want to use for your tassel.
23:23And, you're going to wrap it around that hard object a few times.
23:31The more times you wrap around, the thicker your tassel is going to be.
23:42When you're satisfied with the amount of yarn you're using, go ahead and snip off the end.
23:47And, you're going to cut one end of the yarn.
23:54So, here I'm just going to go and cut this end here.
24:11Now, that leaves you with numerous long strands of yarn that's double the length that you want for your tassel.
24:20So, you are now going to cut a new piece of yarn that you're going to tie the top with.
24:28And, you're going to want to make it long enough to tie to the other end.
24:33So, I'm just making it around the same length, a little longer for good measure.
24:42Alright.
24:44And, so I'm going to take this and tie a knot at the very center.
24:56Let me make sure it is indeed centered.
25:12Alright.
25:14And, I'm going to tie the knot twice, double knotting it to make sure it's very secure.
25:23Like so.
25:27Now, you're going to grab another piece of yarn and you're going to wrap it around the top of the
25:34tassel.
25:39And, I like to make this piece long enough so that I can pull it in with the rest of
25:44my tassel pieces to kind of hide it afterwards.
25:49So, I'm just tying it tightly and double knotting it again to make sure it doesn't come apart.
26:06And, one end just naturally goes down with the tassel.
26:10The other end, I'm going to pull in using a crochet hook.
26:14So, this part that sticks up, I'm just going to pull it in.
26:23Okay.
26:25And, now, if you hold the...
26:31Straighten out the strands, you can go ahead and trim the bottom part of your tassel.
26:36Make it nice and tidy and even.
27:00If you would like to, you can even string on a cute round bead at the top here at the
27:06tassel.
27:07And, adding a bead would be a nice touch, really.
27:13But, if you want to have it as a simple tassel, you can just pull it in.
27:18Pull the ends in through the chain two gap here.
27:23Okay.
27:48And, that's that for your little granny square necklace.
27:55The tassel does give it a cute little touch.
27:57If you want, you can add additional little tassels to the other two corners to the side here.
28:04I think that would look really cute as well.
28:07And, of course, you are welcome to customize it however you want.
28:12So, be creative and have fun with it.
28:17Bye.
28:18Bye.
28:19Bye.
28:21Bye.
28:22Bye.
28:22Bye.
28:22Bye.
