Crochet PYRAMID CHICKEN tutorial no-sew granny square chicken alternative!

00:08Hello and welcome to my tutorial for the pyramid chicken. This is the no sew version of my popular
00:16granny square chicken, which is this pretty chicken using just two granny squares. I have
00:22the original and the plush versions and they are both free patterns on my blog and YouTube channel.
00:28You can find the links in the description. Now let's get back to the pyramid chicken. This one
00:35is completely no sew and worked in the round with some clever seeming just like regular amigurumi.
00:42My pdf pattern actually includes instructions for three chickens, the original that I'm showing on
00:48the right, the feet out chicken on the left, and a little baby chick right here in the center.

01:02included are lots of photo references to help you through the crochet process. In this video tutorial,
01:09I'm going to go ahead and share with you step-by-step instructions on how to crochet the original
01:15pyramid chicken. So if you'd like to make this free version, stay tuned and we'll crochet it together.
01:22As a quick note, these do make really great gifts for Easter or holidays as stocking stuffers,
01:29hanging ornaments, and even keychains.
01:36For the materials, you'll need some super bulky weight Chanel velvet yarn. I used yellow, pink, orange, and green
01:42colors. I also used a 5 millimeter hook. Use whatever hook you want to create tight stitches. You'll also need
01:5012 millimeter eyes, stuffing, and scissors. Let's get started.
02:02We're going to begin with 16 chains. So first make the slip knot to start and then chain 1, 2,
02:123, 4, 5,
02:156, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. After you make 16 chains, we're going to
02:30crochet along
02:31one side of the chain, then on the other side of the chain. And we're going to work in continuous
02:39rounds
02:40around this chain. So we're going to start in the second chain from your hook. That's this one right
02:49here. And in that second chain from the hook, you're going to make a single crochet. And basically single
02:58crochet in each chain across to the end. You're going to have 15 single crochets total. So that's
03:061, and then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
03:3611, 12, 13, 14, and 15.
03:55And at the very end, we're going to turn our piece so that we can work on the other side
04:01of the chain.
04:02And so I'm going to insert a single crochet into the other side of that chain. It's the same chain
04:11that we made in the very beginning that we made in the very beginning. We're just working on the other
04:15side now. And we're going to single crochet 15 across the same number of single crochet stitches.
04:22So that's 1, and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
04:571, and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11, 12,
05:21So now with 15 on each side, you should now have a total of 30 single crochets. So now we're
05:29going to
05:29place a marker here and we're going to start on round number 2. In round 2 and all the way
05:37up to round 12 or as far as you want to go, all you're going to do is just single
05:43crochet in each
05:47stitch. So here I'm going to place my stitch marker, which is actually just a yarn scrap.
05:54You can just put any contrasting yarn scrap color here to make it easy to see.
06:00And now I'm going to insert my hook into that first stitch in round 2, make a single crochet,
06:07and that holds my yarn scrap here. So my marker is going to tell me where the first
06:13or where the start of the round is. So now for round 2, we're going to go ahead and single
06:19crochet
06:19all the way around. Remember you're going to work around without increasing or decreasing.
06:27Just putting one single crochet in each stitch. And you should end up with 30 single crochets total
06:34for each of these straight rounds.
06:40And you're going to want to keep crocheting until you reach the desired
06:49height of your piece. And I'm going to meet back to show you what round 12 looks like.
06:56And also show you the measurements for rounds, um, for round one and up to round 12 to give you
07:05an
07:05idea as to, um, what kind of size or how far you want to go to. If you want to
07:10make your
07:12granny or excuse me, if you want to make your chicken a different size as mine,
07:22you can customize it to make it a different size.
07:29Here's just a quick look at round number 2 complete. As you can see, I've reached the start of the
07:36round
07:37here with round 2. That stitch marker tells me where to stop at. And I'm just going to keep working
07:45along
07:46until I reach round number 12 here. And I'll show you what that looks like when we get there.
07:55And so far you're going to keep working around and around in a continuous spiral.
08:02Here is round 12 complete. As you can see, you've got somewhat of a square
08:08looking thing. And this pocket is going to be where you stuff your chicken. And you'll want the
08:17wrong side of the piece facing in. Here's what the wrong side looks like. And of course, you'll want
08:24the right side of the piece facing out. You can see the right side has little V stitches. So it
08:32looks
08:32like little Vs stacked above each other and next to each other. Again, here is what the wrong side looks
08:41like. All right. And if you want your chicken to have the perfect pyramid shape, you can go ahead and
08:49measure the length and the width to make sure they're the same. You'll want a nice square. So here's
08:56three and a half inches. And from here is also three and a half inches. We're going to open up
09:06the pocket
09:08that you've made. And you're actually going to push the top corner to the bottom corner like so.
09:22When you do that, you will form your chicken's pyramid shape.
09:28So again, here it is. The square is flat and you're going to push the top to the bottom corner.
09:38Like so. Now what you want to do if you want to make this a fully no sew crochet pattern,
09:47we're going to pull out these stitches in the last round, round 12,
09:51until we reach the very side of the edge. So I'm just pulling out a few stitches.
10:05And here I'm at the very edge. Let's double check that.
10:12See how that chicken is looking. And yes, this is the very edge. And what you'll want to do now
10:20is you're
10:21going to fasten off or, excuse me, make that loop really large so that when you crochet and do the
10:31other finishing things on the chicken, you won't lose this working loop. We're going to use this in
10:36order to crochet across when we finish the chicken.
10:45Let's go ahead and crochet the crown using some pink yarn or your color of choice.
10:51The crown is going to be on the very top of the chicken's head. And you'll want to first have
10:59your little pocket or your square with the opening facing to the right.
11:05And we're going to crochet the crown from right to left. And it's going to sit on top of round
11:12three,
11:13round two, and round one. So flattening your chicken or your little square here,
11:22we're going to first insert the hook under round three or a stitch in round three. And you can find
11:29that by seeing the different rows here. This is round one, this is round two, this is round three.
11:37So here I'm under round three. And I'm going to pull pink yarn through like so.
11:48Here we're going to start off with a chain.
11:54And in that very same stitch, we're going to insert two double crochets.
11:59So here's my first double crochet in that same stitch.
12:07And my second double crochet in the same stitch.
12:14Then I'm going to chain and make a slip stitch.
12:20Like so.
12:22It creates sort of this little bobble here.
12:26And now I'm going to repeat that in the next stitch, which is going to be in round two.
12:32So let's make a chain and then a double crochet under this next stitch.
12:40In round two.
12:52Double crochet.
12:56Double crochet.
12:56Then make a chain and then slip stitch in that same round.
13:05Then the next stitch is going to be in round one.
13:11Make a chain.
13:19Oops.
13:20Oops.
13:22And then double crochet.
13:26Oops.
13:27Gets a little bit tight here.
13:48All right, here is that stitch in round one.
13:51I'm going to make two double crochets.
13:58One and two.
14:12Make a chain and slip stitch into that same stitch.
14:22And at the very end, you can fasten off with a long yarn tail, which you're going to use to
14:28pull into the piece.
14:33What I like to do is pull the yarn tails in and then I like to tie them together so
14:40that they are nicely secured inside of the body.
14:56Now we've got this cute little crown going for our chicken.
15:01We can go ahead and make the beak next.
15:09Now after you've done the crown, we can crochet the beak.
15:13For the beak, you're going to look at the last stitch for the crown and you're going to skip that
15:20next stitch.
15:25So with this gap of a stitch in between the beak, we're going to insert our hook into that next
15:34stitch here.
15:37Notice the stitch gap between right here.
15:43And we're going to pull yarn through.
15:52And I want to make sure I'm going on the other side too.
15:56So again, we're skipping one stitch after the crown and going into the next stitch.
16:04After you pull orange yarn through, you're going to make a chain.
16:10Then you're going to single crochet into the same stitch.
16:22Then you're going to chain and then you're going to slip stitch.
16:27For the slip stitch, I like to work backwards.
16:30So going into the back of the stitch and pulling out from the front.
16:37You could do it the normal way if you'd like.
16:42After you're done, fasten off with a long tail and you're going to pull that yarn end into the body.
17:01And that's that for the little beak.
17:09Now's a good time to attach the plastic safety eyes.
17:13I attach them between rounds three and rounds four.
17:17So from the left here, we're counting one, two, three, and four.
17:23And I like to place it around here, a level with the beak, about three stitches down from the top.
17:32So this is where I like to place the eyes.
17:35And you're welcome to put them anywhere you'd like.
17:39I'm using 12 millimeter eyes here.
17:42You're welcome to go bigger or smaller.
17:46And here on the opposite side, I also have it between rounds three and rounds four.
17:53And about three stitches down.
17:57Again, level with the beak.
18:11Now we're going to go ahead and stuff the amigurumi.
18:15I like to use enough stuffing to firmly stuff the doll, but not so much that you're going to stretch
18:25the stitches.
18:26You don't want any stuffing poking through between the stitches.
18:39After you finish stuffing your amigurumi's body, it's time to cinch up the opening and crochet it shut.
18:50The way I do that is by using a no-sew method of just slip stitching all the way across,
18:57going through both layers, the upper and the lower layer of the chicken,
19:02so that I can crochet without doing any sort of sewing.
19:09And it's quite easy for doing that.
19:13All you have to do is just insert your hook into one stitch in the front and one stitch in
19:20the back.
19:23Again, we're going to hold these layers flat so that we can slip stitch across.
19:29But I'm pulling my yarn through and making a slip stitch.
19:37So this first one's a little difficult. I'm just going to wiggle it through.
19:41And now for the second pair of stitches.
19:44Going into the front and the back.
19:48And pulling through for a slip stitch.
19:53Going through front and back.
19:56Pulling through for a slip stitch.
20:00Front and back.
20:03Pulling through for a slip stitch.
20:06Repeat that until you make your way across the entire chicken's opening.
20:36When you finish, you should have a very nicely and neatly themed opening.
20:43Like so.
20:45And you can go ahead and fasten off with a long tail for sewing or weaving in.
20:55And this is that starting marker we had from the beginning.
20:58I'm just going to pull it out now.
21:00We really don't need that anymore.
21:04Anyways, here is your chicken pyramid all cinched up.
21:10Now, if you'd like to, you can add a tail to the very back.
21:15And I'll go ahead and show you how to do that.
21:21Let's go ahead and crochet the tail.
21:24For the tail, you want to look at the back of your chicken where you just cinched up the opening.
21:32And mark three stitches in the center of the back.
21:36The tail is going to take up three stitches of space.
21:40And I sort of marked where I think the center would be.
21:45And you can eyeball it if you want.
21:47But try to line it up with the crown.
21:54And once you're ready, you can go ahead and insert your hook into that very first stitch.
22:01And I'm just going to pull this out now.
22:04So in that very first stitch, we're going to start that tail.
22:08Pull the yarn color you want for the tail out.
22:11I'm using this minty green here.
22:15And you're going to make a chain.
22:18Double crochet two times into the stitch.
22:23So that's one and two.
22:33And then in the same stitch, you're going to make a chain and slip stitch.
22:40If that seems familiar, it is.
22:43It's the exact same way you made the crown.
22:46We're going to repeat that two more times in the next two stitches.
22:51So make a chain.
22:54Double crochet in the next stitch.
22:59Double crochet again.
23:30I'm pulling it way too hard.
23:32Okay, trying to keep my stitches tight.
23:37And then make a chain and slip stitch into the same stitch.
23:44And with that, you have a little tail.
23:47Now you're going to fasten off with a long yarn tail that you're going to use just for weaving in.
24:06I love these scissors because I'm able to use the sharp end or the tip to just stuff those yarn
24:13ends in.
24:15Super convenient.
24:17And weave in any other loose ends you have.
24:20I've got this one from the body that I should really weave in right now.
24:35And that's it for the pyramid chicken.
24:38As you can see, it's a quick and easy project.
24:41And I love that this version is no sew.
24:46It is so much faster to make than the original granny square chicken I designed.
24:52There is a feet out version of this chicken.
24:57I actually crocheted this chicken in the opposite way by putting the legs on the two corners.
25:08So, as you can see, these two pyramids are in the same direction right now.
25:15But they are facing opposite ways.
25:18So, this little guy has just a tail at the back point.
25:23And in the two corners are his little feet.
25:28So, I call him the feet out chicken.
25:31And it's a really cute little chicken as well.
25:35It could definitely sit and look adorable with its little claws out.
25:41And here's the original chicken, which does not have any feet.
25:46So, if you'd like to make this little feet out chicken,

25:57It's a fun alternative to make.
26:00And its body is crocheted the exact same way as this little guy here.
