00:01I really wanted to live in LA.
00:04I wanted to find an agency to start modeling.
00:10This is the building where the Ford Agency is.
00:15I think it was the eighth floor.
00:20It's almost like I can see myself, like, outside of my body.
00:27I've noticed I do that, though.
00:28Like, if there's, like, some sort of trauma involved,
00:31I really do, like, just detach.
00:36Jared Leto.
00:43He was standing to the left of those double doors.
00:49My mom noticed him as we were going up the stairs.
00:55I kind of saw him look over.
00:56He hung up the phone and just, like, walked right in behind us.
01:02He brought up that he had won a major award.
01:05Does anybody want to try it out for size?
01:08Yeah, you can if anybody wants to fondle.
01:11Yeah, here.
01:15He was like, oh, yeah, you're going to get signed.
01:17Definitely, you're so beautiful.
01:20And he asked for my email so he can invite me and my mom to his, like, Oscar party.
01:26I bet this is the first, the first person to ever give their Oscar away for an orgy in the
01:33press room.
01:35And how old were you at this time?
01:37I was 16 at the time and he was 42.
01:43He did email me and then very quickly it turns into this whole, like, sexual thing on the phone.
01:49Saying all these, like, things that you shouldn't say to a child.
01:54Thank you very much and congratulations.
01:59I was, I was 17.
02:0217.
02:03As a 14-year-old girl with a little, with a little crush on him, I was very excited to
02:07see Jared Leto.
02:08I think that was the first time I ever met a celebrity.
02:10Oh my God, do you know who that is?
02:12That's Jared Leto.
02:17He had invited me to his house.
02:20Asked me to come meet him in his hotel.
02:21Jared Leto cordially invites you to a celebration.
02:25Sending an invite out to a lot of models.
02:28I ran to the autograph table.
02:31You know, most young girls saw him very much as a heartthrog.
02:40Wait, but this is problematic.
02:43There is a whole population who don't know who he truly is.
02:47You really just chose to take your power and abuse it.
02:51Alarms started going off in my head.
02:53This is not what I came here for.
02:55By the time I get back, I would like your clothes to be off.
02:58It doesn't matter what your age is, it doesn't matter if you're underage.
03:00And that's when I realized he was in his early 30s.
03:02He was 34.
03:04He was 42 at the time.
03:06And then he just goes, if you're going to sleep, here.
03:10You're going to wake up with a dick in your ass.
03:28People are like, what did you hope to accomplish with your book?
03:30Two things.
03:31I want to be proud of it and I want to not get sued.
03:33Yeah.
03:34Touch and go there for a little while.
03:37Okay.
03:38Ready?
03:39Who's Jared Leto?
03:41So Jared Leto is an actor at the very highest realms of the industry.
03:52He won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club in which he played a trans woman.
04:01And the Oscar goes to Jared Leto.
04:08That sealed his status as a household name in one of the power players in Hollywood.
04:18He started out as a very well-known TV actor.
04:22In my so-called life, his role, Jordan Catalano, was the school dreamboat.
04:30A generation of women, and I think some men, were mesmerized by those blue eyes.
04:40He's unique in that he's not only a high-profile actor, he's also an entrepreneur and he's an investor.
04:48Uber, Airbnb, Spotify, Reddit.
04:51I've always been entrepreneurial ever since I sold dope as a kid.
04:57He's associated with fashion houses.
04:59And also, he's a really successful rock star with his band, 30 Seconds to Mars.
05:07Take number!
05:11Take number!
05:36I think the first time I ever came across Jared Leto was watching Requiem for a Dream when I was
05:43a teenager.
05:44I always thought you were the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
05:49Really?
05:50I thought he was incredible.
05:51It was a film that definitely stayed with me.
05:58Airmal's a digital weekly based in New York.
06:03It does a bit of everything.
06:06True crime, arts and culture.
06:08I've also done investigative work.
06:14I follow this DJ called Ali Teels on Instagram.
06:21In April 2025, she posted on her Instagram a screenshot of a Facebook status she'd posted originally in 2012.
06:32You're not really in LA until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage in a kilt and a
06:38snow hat.
06:40She went on to say that she was underage, she was 17 at the time, and that he was aware
06:45of her age.
06:47She has a big following, she has over 100,000 followers.
06:52She started getting a lot of responses from women who'd had allegedly similar experiences with Jared, which she was then
07:01posting.
07:23I was refreshing her story every few hours and I was quite stunned by the wealth of responses that she
07:29got.
07:29The experiences ranged from inappropriate behaviour to assault.
07:36It captured my attention and I started looking into the story.
07:48My name is Jessica Sartanar. I'm a documentary producer and journalist.
07:54I've been making documentaries for nearly 10 years, often looking into high profile people.
08:03We saw Ali's post and the reaction.
08:08This is not something you see every day.
08:12If all of this was true, these were allegations on a massive scale about a very big player in Hollywood.
08:21So we immediately started investigating.
08:26I spoke to some of the women who wrote in to Ali. I managed to track them down.
08:31I was putting down the phone and I felt a little bit sick to my stomach.
08:37Among the allegations, there was one woman, she was 18 at the time, she went over to his house and
08:42he got naked and grabbed her hand and put it on his penis and said,
08:47I want you to spit on it.
08:51I gathered all my research, put together the story.
08:56Ultimately, nine women contributed.
09:00A lot of them were very scared, which is why most of them requested anonymity.
09:05We did send a right to reply to Leto and his team and they responded expressly denying every allegation.
09:15The article went live.
09:18It was pretty much picked up worldwide.
09:21The Guardian, Italian national newspaper, Il Corriere della Sera.
09:26Actor and musician Jared Leto has been accused of sexual misconduct and predatory behaviour.
09:33Allegedly, allegedly likes very young girls, teenage girls.
09:38I saw it was reported that Disney was holding crisis talks.
09:42He was meant to be playing the lead in Tron Ares.
09:45I would like you to meet Ares, the ultimate soldier.
09:50I think the crisis talks were surrounding the marketing campaign.
09:54It was a big deal.
09:55And I really thought, you know, this is gonna, this is gonna have some real life repercussions for, for Jared.
10:05When the airmail article came out, this was the first time that women had gone on the record alleging that
10:11they had been sexually abused by Leto.
10:14We watched and waited to see what the consequences might be.
10:18So as the days went on, I was typing in Jared Leto allegations or just Googling Jared Leto.
10:26I started seeing other news about him that was unrelated.
10:30And, um, and I saw the articles surrounding the allegations start to trickle off.
10:36I thought, oh, wow, like, that's, that's it.
10:41I was, I guess I was disappointed.
10:43I was disappointed that the world didn't take my victims' allegations seriously.
10:54Within weeks, Leto started doing publicity for Tron Ares.
10:59We're in London and we're super excited. It's been a great night so far.
11:03Culminating in an appearance on top of the Piccadilly lights as a promotional stunt for the film.
11:10A really uncomfortable truth about Hollywood is that there's now calculations being made that this is not a career ender.
11:19I think that calculation got made with Jared Leto.
11:24We can quash it. We can ride it out. We can deflect it.
11:29And, uh, six months from now, or, you know, six minutes from now, another story will come down the pike
11:33and suck up all the oxygen in the room.
11:38We were still working on our investigation in the background.
11:43Forty women had written into Ali. Nine women had gone on the record with airmail.
11:50So we were really asking ourselves, how widespread was this?
11:55And how long has it been going on for?
12:01We started digging deeper.
12:05And that's when we found Etta.
12:16The first email, he just sent an image of the invitation.
12:22Jared Leto cordially invites you to a celebration.
12:29I said, I thank you for the invite, but I couldn't make it even though I'm sure it would have
12:33been fun.
12:35And he responded, text me, and gave me his number.
12:39I didn't even consider how weird it was to be invited by a 42-year-old man at 16 to
12:45a party.
12:46Did he know you were 16?
12:49I know for sure, if not then, I did tell him a couple of days later when we were texting.
12:57We texted for a couple of days and then, then he would start mostly calling.
13:05He never would call me without making it a private number.
13:10I think he did his best to make sure there was no proof.
13:16Like at first it was like, you know, who did you sign with?
13:19Oh, how did it go?
13:20So, but it quickly moved into, um, oh, well, you're a virgin.
13:27Do you have any kinks?
13:28Like, what are you interested in?
13:30Oh, can you squirt?
13:32Like, he seemed very interested in, in squirting.
13:36He did at least once mention him and I having sex at some point.
13:42How did it make you feel, him asking you questions like that?
13:45Um, I remember feeling like nervous.
13:49Uh, a little like anxious, a little uncomfortable, but like, at the time I remember I had a really hard
13:55time like saying like no to things or like putting boundaries up.
14:03He asked me if he could give my number to, to a friend of his.
14:07I just remember him, you know, telling me that it was like a business thing.
14:14And I was like, yeah, sure, whatever, that's fine.
14:18This guy, he told me his name was Christian.
14:20He would call me a lot.
14:25Uh, he wanted to hire me to shoot porn.
14:30And he was like, you know, it doesn't matter if you're underage, we'll work it out.
14:33Like, you know, we'll get like a really nice house in the hills.
14:36You know, we'll have like six guys in the shower, have them like come all over you.
14:45And because he would also call me from a private number, I wouldn't know sometimes if it was going to
14:51be Jared or him.
14:54And were there similarities between the types of things that Christian and Jared were saying?
14:59They both were really obsessed with mentioning the possibility of squirting.
15:06Both of them, yeah.
15:08Have you ever considered that Jared and Christian might have been the same person?
15:14I think it would not be that surprising if that ended up being the truth, you know?
15:50How old are you?
15:51You.
15:52Yes.
15:53Stephanie, come here.
15:55Come here.
15:57Um, give me a hug first of all.
16:06You can let go now.
16:10Um, what's your name?
16:12Kate.
16:12Where are you from?
16:14You're from LA.
16:15That's what I like about high school, girl.
16:19I keep getting older than you stay the same age
16:22All right, all right, all right
16:25All right, all right, all right
16:29There have been allegations swirling around Leto for decades
16:33All the way back in 2005
16:35There was an article in the New York Post
16:38Alleging that Leto was approaching teen and underage girls
16:42At a hotel in New York
16:45And texting them
16:46But what we were really surprised by
16:50Was just how many allegations actually exist online
16:54I counted around 120 allegations
16:58Relating to highly concerning behaviour
17:00Women said they had witnessed, heard about
17:03Or experienced themselves
17:05And some of these allegations dated right back to the early 2000s
17:24Okay, well down memory lane, right
17:26I have a few photos here
17:29Back in that day when I was a little bit younger
18:02Oh my gosh
18:03I mean, I look, yeah, I look so young
18:12I've always been this like free spirit type of person
18:17And I still actually to this day
18:18One of those act first, think second, you know
18:23Just try things and then if it works out, great
18:25And if it doesn't, then now you know
18:33In 2002, when I was 17
18:35I had this job at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas
18:38I worked in the mall
18:41A group of guys came in
18:42One of them looked familiar
18:44So I said, oh, you look familiar
18:46And he was like, well, what high school did you go to?
18:50And I said, oh, I went to, you know, this high school
18:53And he was like, oh, no way, me too
18:55His friends started laughing
18:57And they were like, he didn't go to your high school
18:59They were like, he's famous
19:01This is Jared Leto
19:03They're coughing
19:04He has this movie coming out called Panic Room
19:07Nobody is gonna die, man
19:09Will you please have the balls to follow through with something?
19:12And we're in Vegas
19:13Because we actually just started this band called 30 Seconds to Mars
19:17Oh, cool
19:18Like, that's awesome
19:19You know, you're famous
19:20And I still didn't know he was, right?
19:22So you were saying all last night
19:24So I was just showing them around
19:26And taking them through the store
19:28And it was just, you know, like a fun, casual vibe
19:31That's when Jared Leto was like, hey, you seem really cool
19:35You know, can I get your phone number?
19:36Would you like to hang out later?
19:38Yeah, you know, I'm like, oh, cool
19:39Like, he's a celebrity, right?
19:41I'm 17
19:43I think that was the first time I ever met a celebrity
19:47And so I was gonna meet up with him after work
19:52And he asked me to come meet him in his hotel
19:56It was really close to my work
19:57And I pulled in and it was this dingy motel
20:04I didn't think much of it
20:05I just was like, oh, he's still getting ready
20:07And we're gonna meet up there
20:08And then we're gonna go out afterwards
20:12So I knocked on the door
20:14Went in
20:16I sat on the bed
20:18And he was like, hey, yeah
20:19I'm just gonna hop in the shower real quick
20:22Do you mind waiting?
20:23And I was like, no, of course not
20:24Like, go finish getting ready
20:30Okay, so he went and got in the shower
20:33And what happened next?
20:38Um, sorry, this is where it gets hard
20:44Sorry, I had to, like, get myself together
20:52I was sitting on the bed waiting for him to get ready
20:53And, um, and he called, he called me
20:56And he was like, hey, like, come in here
20:58So we can talk while I'm, you know
21:00In the shower
21:04And so I went into the bathroom
21:07Um, I don't think there was many words exchanged
21:14And when he opened the shower curtain
21:17He started kissing me
21:19Uh, and then he grabbed my hand
21:22Um, I don't even know how to say this part
21:25But he grabbed my hand
21:26And he, I guess, started, like, touching himself with my hand
21:29Like, using my hand to, I guess, masturbate himself with my hand
21:37And, um, alarms started going off in my head
21:42Like, what are you doing here?
21:43Like, this is not what you came here for
21:45And that moment, I, I definitely realized
21:51That I was not in a great situation
21:55You know, I'm alone in this room
21:57And, like, I didn't know what was going to happen, right
22:02I pulled away and I was like, okay, uh, I'm gonna go
22:07He got out, put a towel on
22:10There's a weird thing that I, I always remembered
22:14He looked, he went outside
22:16And I remember he, like, specifically, like, looked to the left
22:18And it looked almost like seeing if there was anybody around
22:22Before he let me out of the room
22:28I'm so sorry to have him tea
22:38We didn't, we didn't have internet in our hands, right
22:41And I was at work
22:42I got off work
22:45I met up with him
22:46And so I didn't know anything about him
22:48Till after everything
22:50When I went home
22:51And then I looked him up on, like, a computer
22:54You know
22:54And that's when I realized he was in his early thirties
22:59You know, I'm in my forties now
23:02And
23:03In my whole life
23:07I had viewed this event
23:09As
23:11I was a stupid girl
23:13That did something stupid
23:15Did something dumb
23:17And so
23:17This bad thing happened
23:21But of course it did
23:22Because
23:24I did something dumb
23:26And so
23:27It's on me
23:30I don't think I ever
23:32Till recently
23:33Ever
23:36Blamed him
23:37I always blamed me
23:39Sick
23:40Sick
23:52In 2005
23:5430 Seconds to Mars
23:55Released an album
23:56Called A Beautiful Lie
23:57And on that album
23:59Was a song called
24:00The Kill
24:01Which was
24:03Incredibly popular
24:05That
24:06Break me down
24:11Break me down
24:12Break me, break me
24:13Right on
24:14Swing
24:21Yeah
24:35And it really saw their entry into the mainstream.
24:41How you doing, New York City?
24:44Suddenly, Leto had access to this huge, devoted fan base,
24:48many of whom were young teenage girls.
25:04As a teenager, I was very much so a punk goth kid.
25:13I had colored hair, I wore fishnets, I wore black lipstick,
25:16I wore black nail polish.
25:19The scene was so supportive.
25:23It was just a sense of, like, a community.
25:27The first time I ever heard 30 Seconds to Mars
25:29was on the radio, and I was instantly hooked.
25:34I was literally listening to The Kill on repeat.
25:40I saw 30 Seconds to Mars at the 99X Miss Ball.
25:44My mom got me tickets.
25:48The concert was absolutely amazing.
25:53Oh, I was in heaven when I saw Jared Leto on stage
25:55as a 14-year-old girl with a little crush on him.
26:02So 30 Seconds to Mars gets off stage.
26:08They were allowing people to get autographs and meet them.
26:13I walked up to Jared Leto, told him I'm a huge fan,
26:17and I held my shirt out for him to sign, hopefully on an arm
26:22or maybe on the belly.
26:23And instead, he chose to sign my shirt across my breasts.
26:29And he told me, you have a nice rack.
26:33And in that time frame, he asked his bodyguard
26:37to go ahead and take me backstage.
26:39He didn't even ask me if I wanted to go backstage.
26:41He literally looked at his security guard and said,
26:44take her, take her back.
26:47I was very short.
26:50I had braces.
26:52It was very obvious that I was a teenager.
26:57My mother, who was standing next to me, was like,
27:01that's my daughter.
27:02She's fucking 14.
27:05And he looked at her and said, it's still a nice rack.
27:14We didn't get to stay and finish the concert.
27:16My mom took me home.
27:21This was not a pleasant experience to have to go through.
27:25You should not be touching my breasts in any way, shape, or form.
27:32I was 14, and that was supposed to be a sense of community for me.
27:36Things like that aren't supposed to happen at metal shows.
27:38I'm going to cry.
27:39Things like that aren't supposed to happen when you are supposed to be enjoying yourself.
27:56You're great.
27:57It's okay.
28:03It's you.
28:13It really altered my life in a real way.
28:19I stopped going to concerts altogether.
28:21I stopped listening to that kind of music.
28:25I really felt like I had been taken advantage of.
28:32What turns me on?
28:34I would like to answer that by asking a question.
28:37What doesn't turn me on?
28:42We wanted to speak to insiders from the mid-2000s.
28:47So people who had spent time with Leto, who had worked with him in the context of his band.
28:53So we contacted hundreds of people.
28:57Producers, crew members, tour staff, even bandmates.
29:04And it was really, really hard getting people to talk to us.
29:07A lot of them were scared to speak out.
29:09Many had signed NDAs.
29:13But then eventually we found Simon.
29:16I think that's him.
29:20Hi, Simon.
29:22Hi, Jessica.
29:24Thank you so much for coming all this way.
29:28Okay, let me introduce you to the lurkers over here.
29:35Speaking to me anonymously, is that for fear of repercussions?
29:39I don't want to be notable in this at all, but I do want to do my part.
29:48Would I want to tell my daughter that I didn't stand up for what was right when I got an
29:55opportunity to say something?
29:57Let's talk about 30 seconds to Mars.
30:01I worked with the band for about a decade.
30:04Jared was generally very focused and hardworking, very demanding.
30:10He had a clear vision of what he wanted.
30:14During one period of time, they'd set up their recording equipment in a spare room in the house,
30:20with just a desk and a few chairs, a microphone.
30:25A couple of packing blankets.
30:31He would be texting with girls.
30:34There would probably, typically on a given day, be about two girls that might stop by.
30:42It wasn't uncommon that he would go let them in,
30:45sort of point to a chair for them to sit down and possibly ignore them for about 10, 15 minutes.
30:54He might make a sort of rude remark.
30:57Maybe it might be, you're a dirty girl, aren't you?
31:01The feeling was he was trying to assert control, trying to assert a sense of power.
31:10There was one particular instance that I clearly remember where a girl had to be dropped off by her parents.
31:19This particular girl was very young-looking, and Jared would have been in his early 30s.
31:30They took off to the bedroom.
31:33When they returned, and she wanted a photo with him, and she tried to give him a kiss on the
31:39cheek, he stopped her.
31:43And wanted to make sure that the photo looked like a sort of spontaneous platonic meeting.
31:51At that point, she had to contact her parents to come pick her up.
31:55Probably only an hour had gone by.
31:59She just kind of sat there.
32:02The feeling in the air, it felt like shame and embarrassment.
32:07I just remember being really moved by it.
32:14So what did you think when the allegations started to surface last year?
32:21I remember reading the articles, and then coming across a video that a young woman had made, speaking of her
32:31time with Jared.
32:33I remember her reciting some of the things Jared would say to her.
32:38There was no question about it.
32:41She wasn't making it up.
32:43This is his language.
32:46Could you show me the video you're talking about?
32:50I first met him when I had just turned 17, and he was 33.
32:57I met him after a 30 Seconds to Mars concert.
33:01He had started to move from just, like, flirting to saying things of a more sexual nature.
33:08He literally started calling me Lolita, telling me he was old enough to be my father.
33:14He knew I was 17.
33:16He did various things like kiss my neck, touch my chest, tape my hand, put it on top of his
33:24pants.
33:24One time I was backstage with him, grabbed my face, and made me promise that I wasn't going to tell
33:30anyone.
33:36Did those behaviors that she's describing feel familiar to you?
33:42It's uncanny.
33:43The things she says about how he would behave with her.
33:47It's upsetting.
33:49It's disturbing.
33:52It completely brings back memories of what I witnessed.
34:09His band was having a concert. I was with another girl.
34:13And we were backstage.
34:17I was 17.
34:19It wasn't actually Jared Leto who approached me.
34:22He had sent an acquaintance of his.
34:24Probably in his 40s, he was a comedian.
34:27And he told me, you know, Jared's seen you from wherever he is over there, and he was interested in
34:32getting your number.
34:34I didn't actually meet him at that venue at that time.
34:37That would come later.
34:40You know, most young girls saw him very much as a heartthrob.
34:44You know, very handsome, great features, professionally very good at what he did as an actor, as a singer.
34:50He was a very magnetic person.
34:53At that age, I had just been coming out of a really awkward time in adolescence.
34:59I had always been very, very shy. Painfully shy.
35:03I'd blush a lot. I'd trip over my words.
35:07It was very validating that someone like him would be interested in me at all.
35:15So sometime after that concert, there had been some text exchanges.
35:20He had invited me to meet him at a place called the Chateau Marmont, which is right there in the
35:25main area of Hollywood.
35:27I had a friend with me at the time, so he said, go ahead and bring her.
35:31It's a very kind of secluded, upscale place where they cater to a lot of A-list celebrities, so it
35:38was intimidating at first going in there.
35:43He was at a table with friends.
35:45He kind of waved us over, we sat down, my friend and I, and just having some general banter about
35:52things.
35:55We had kind of drifted into the realm to talk about the age of consent.
35:59I had mentioned to him that my dad was in law enforcement, that I knew with certainty that here in
36:06California, the age of consent is 18.
36:09He just kind of shrugged it off like it wasn't a huge concern for him.
36:15And he knew at that point that you were 17.
36:17Oh yes, he did now. Yeah.
36:32So after that, he had told me that they were about to head back to his house.
36:39So he had walked in the door, and I remember immediately off to the side, there were these two really
36:46distinct statues from the clockwork orange.
36:49And he had them, there were two females, and he had them arranged in like a very sexual position.
36:57He had showed us where his bedroom was, we had gone in, we were sitting on the bed with him.
37:04And so he suggested to my friend, you can wait in the computer room while her and I hang out.
37:11That is when things had turned sexual, when my friend was in the other room.
37:17If you wait in the corner, you see where his bedroom is headed.
37:19Come and see him!
37:46So there was probably I would say about three or four times that I had been to his residence.
37:52There was one time in particular where I had gone over, I let him know that I was there,
37:58he opened the door and he had told me that he was in the middle of some sort of interview.
38:03So he let me in the house.
38:07I went down the hallway into his bedroom and he had made a comment of by the time I get
38:13back I would like your clothes to be off.
38:15So he had gone out, finished the interview, he had come back in the room and he said when
38:21he noticed that I was undressed, something to the effect of brave little girl.
38:26It was this theme that he kind of stuck with, wanting to see me as a younger girl.
38:34He told me I would like you to call me daddy and it was either and pretend to be a
38:40little
38:40girl or my little girl.
38:58I had so little exposure to anything sexual really at that time as a teenager.
39:04Was this what is expected when you're intimate with somebody older?
39:10Was this what they say?
39:11Is this what they do?
39:13Just wondering if it was normal.
39:17As time went on, I realized more and more how scary that really was, being that age.
39:24And being so naive and vulnerable.
39:29There is no well-adjusted man in his 30s who's going to look at a teenager and think, you
39:38know, wow, she would be a great partner.
39:43The only reason to approach somebody like that is because of how easily manipulated they
39:49are.
39:50Let's talk about the lyrics.
39:52Sex.
39:53You can probably guess which lyrics I'm going to pick out of up in the air.
39:57I don't know.
39:58Surprise me.
39:59I'll wrap my hands around your neck so tight with love, love, love.
40:05Yeah.
40:05Wow.
40:06Quite erotic.
40:07Is it?
40:08Tell us a little bit more.
40:09It's funny that you would take it that way.
40:11About, well, tell us what the song's about if that's not what it is.
40:14Well, I think, what is it they say?
40:18Everything is about sex, except for sex.
40:21Sex is about power.
40:27In the late 2000s, Jared actually took a break from acting to focus on his band, 30 Seconds
40:33to Mars.
40:35They were really gaining a massive fan base across Europe.
40:41It's from this period that we notice a lot of videos online of Leto inviting young girls
40:48up on stage.
40:49Oh, shit.
40:50That's so crazy.
40:51And how the story goes up.
41:07Hello.
41:08Oh, hi, Brad.
41:10It's Jessica from the BBC.
41:11How are you doing?
41:13I'm good.
41:13How are you?
41:14I'm good.
41:17Brad toured with 30 Seconds to Mars around this time, and he agreed to speak with me
41:22about his experience of working with Leto.
41:27At the time I was working for them, they were a very big band, you know?
41:34Headlining arenas in lots of different countries.
41:38What was the atmosphere like on tour?
41:42Very tense.
41:44Now, I've been on the road since I was a teenager, and Jared is one of the worst people
41:49I've ever worked for in any way, shape, or form.
41:55Nice to see you.
41:56Give me a hug.
41:58It's been a long time.
42:08Good to see your face.
42:10We've met before.
42:12Yeah.
42:13I remember, of course.
42:14How could I forget?
42:17How could I ever forget?
42:20No, I'm joking.
42:21I'm joking.
42:22Of course I remember.
42:22You're beautiful.
42:25Did anyone on the crew feel uncomfortable about the way Jared was interacting with female
42:31fans?
42:35No one enjoyed watching that or being involved in that.
42:39If he ever asked anyone to get a phone number or anything like that, I think everyone thought
42:44that the age gap was way too big.
42:47And what sort of age range were these girls, do you think?
42:51Teens.
42:53Yeah, you with the pink hair.
42:55You over here with the pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair, pink hair.
42:59Pink, pink, pink hair.
43:01The minute that I fell apart, I got back up and in you.
43:20Would he ever ask for any of the fans to be brought backstage?
43:24I remember at least one or two incidents of girls coming on stage for the final song.
43:31And crew members being instructed to, you know, grab those girls and invite them to come
43:38backstage after the show.
43:40And he would talk to them in his dressing room and I couldn't tell you what happened
43:45from there.
43:49Was there anything else crew members were asked to do that made them feel uncomfortable?
43:54Whenever they would play cities that had a lot of modeling agencies like Milan, Berlin,
44:00Paris, etc.
44:03Crew members were instructed to call up the modeling agencies and offer free tickets for
44:08the female models.
44:10They would give all of the models VIP passes and they would have a room backstage for them.
44:15I know that people involved in that did not particularly enjoy having to do that because it was all,
44:21well, I mean, calling up a modeling agency and saying we only want your female models is a
44:28little bit uncomfortable.
44:30And who requested this?
44:32That was direct from Jared.
44:39I moved to London in 2013.
44:45I went to Elite Models.
44:53There was a manager from my agency who told me that 30 Seconds to Mars had put out an invitation
45:01that we
45:02could go and see the show.
45:04And then there was also a VIP meetup afterwards that we could go to.
45:10The concert was at the O2.
45:13It was a good concert, I remember.
45:20Somehow the assistant got to me and asked if I wanted to go to an after party at Shortage House.
45:28And I remember thinking to myself, I've never been there.
45:31I want to go.
45:32I want to see what it is.
45:34So we were eight people, mostly just women and then Jared.
45:42I remember going to the bathroom and when I came out, he was standing like in the corridor.
45:50He says something and it gets me to say, do you know how old I am?
45:57And then he says no and then I lie and I say I'm 17.
46:03At the time I'm 19.
46:05I just remember that I felt the need to say that I'm younger than I am.
46:11He said age is just a number and anyway, we're in Europe.
46:24I remember speaking to the assistant.
46:26He was saying that there was the next place to go to.
46:32It was in a hotel.
46:35I was a bit drunk and my phone was dying.
46:40So I was saying, but I don't know where it is.
46:43How am I going to get there?
46:46She kept like pushing and saying, it's really easy.
46:50It's right over there.
46:52The assistant is a woman.
46:55So I trusted her.
47:03I get into the hotel room.
47:06It's really dark.
47:10And then I see that it's just him.
47:13Weren't there supposed to be other people?
47:16And I think he just says, no, it's just you and I.
47:20Then I'm sat there and saying, okay, well, my phone is dying.
47:24So I can't really get home from here.
47:27So I asked him if he has a phone charger.
47:31No, I don't.
47:32Okay.
47:33I also don't have any cash left.
47:36Could I get some cash to get a cab home?
47:41No, I don't have any cash.
47:45I was sat in my chaise along kind of thing.
47:48So I was kind of like thinking to myself, could I just sleep here?
47:54I asked him, can I just sleep here then?
47:58And then he just goes, if you're going to sleep here, you're going to wake up with a dick in
48:04your ass.
48:06And I think I asked him like, what did you say?
48:09And he says this a few times, if you're going to sleep here, you're going to wake up with a
48:13dick in your ass.
48:19At that point, I was like, I'm not safe here.
48:25Okay, I need to get out.
48:29I went to the bathroom first.
48:31And then from there, I was closer to the door.
48:41When I got out of the hotel, I remember being really angry.
48:47I was angry at myself for going into the hotel room.
48:56When I came home at, I think, six in the morning, I texted my then best friend.
49:05And she was saying, he was threatening sexual assault.
49:08You should report him.
49:10And in my head, I was like, nah.
49:13I put myself in that situation.
49:17He didn't touch me.
49:18It was probably a misunderstanding.
49:20I was probably the only one.
49:23But I'm probably not the only one.
49:25And it's probably been a lot worse.
49:27Yeah.
49:32Do you feel like you were tricked into going to that hotel?
49:37Throughout this whole night, I told the assistant all the reasons why I shouldn't go to the next place.
49:47And every time that I had an excuse for not going, I was getting nudged to go further.
49:57The assistant knew what to say to lure me into his hotel room.
50:01It seemed that it was planned out.
50:06Never have I ever hooked up with a fan on tour.
50:10Really?
50:12Yeah.
50:12Yeah.
50:22How did staff feel about having to procure women for Jared in this way?
50:29I don't think anyone liked being involved, but it's also the kind of camp where I think everyone is slightly
50:36fearful for their job and you don't want to say no to anything.
50:43He's not really someone you want to fuck with.
50:49He had a lot of people around that just were constantly jumping through hoops for him and doing anything he
50:57demanded.
51:00There's sort of a secret rule that you don't talk about what the creative talent does in Hollywood.
51:09There's a general sense of just turning a blind eye.
51:16Not a single person spoke up.
51:20There were not only just men of his age, but also women.
51:26These dozens of people who were traveling with him, touring with him.
51:34Not a single one said anything to myself about looking out for him or being concerned about how young I
51:43looked hanging around him.
51:44Nobody said anything.
51:47An enormous part of everything that we're talking about is money.
51:51In Hollywood, in music, there's a superstructure.
51:57There's layers and layers of people around the individual who are incentivized to say and do nothing.
52:05Assistance, manager, lawyer.
52:09And an unfortunate reality with these kinds of stories is that it is not uncommon for sources to be silenced.
52:22Everyone has a vested interest in all of this going away.
52:33About two years after I met him, I got a call from Jared.
52:39From what I recall, he said his lawyer was concerned about his relationships with women.
52:46He kind of, like, chuckled, laughed at that part, and said that his lawyer wants to have all the women
52:54in his life signed to NDAs.
52:57I mean, I didn't feel comfortable with it, like, right away, but I was willing to, like, look at it.
53:05It didn't just cover, like, present and future. It covered things that I would have said in the past.
53:13Commencing on the date on which my association with you began, I hereby acknowledge and agree that a confidential relationship
53:21exists between you and me.
53:23It didn't seem right being able to be held liable for something that I had done previously before I even
53:31knew I wasn't allowed to speak about him.
53:34It seemed like a really great way to get sued.
53:39I never signed it. I made an excuse the first time and then just didn't respond after that.
53:52How has it gotten this far without this becoming a larger scandal?
53:59People knew about it in Los Angeles and in Hollywood.
54:06Is it people just not wanting to believe the allegations about him?
54:11Is it because they believe what he's accused of isn't that bad?
54:15Is it just because they've met him and think he's charming and fun and cool?
54:21Frankly, honestly, I don't get it.
54:26Three women, after they spoke to me for my article, asked me to retract their testimony
54:32because they were pursuing legal action against him.
54:35I'm not sure what came of the legal action. I know that there's been no kind of case in the
54:40public domain thus far.
54:44It's been a year since the airmail article was published and since then Leto has been in two major movies.
54:53Most recently, he played Skeletor in Masters of the Universe.
54:5830 Seconds to Mars have announced that they're going on tour in 2027.
55:05So we have no idea what the impact of our investigation is going to be because honestly, it seems Leto's
55:11career has been unaffected by previous allegations.
55:15Seeing him continue to do whatever he wants to do and get accolades for it is pretty infuriating because he's
55:22left a trail of emotional destruction for a lot of young women.
55:28It makes me lose faith because, like, why are you supporting a man like that? How can you support a
55:37man like that?
55:39So do you think he thought that he'd get away with it?
55:44Well, he has, right? He has gotten away with it. This was 25 years ago.
55:53Apparently, he's been doing it. Apparently, people know about it.
55:58So by all means, I think he has gotten away with it.
56:01So by all means, I think he has gotten away with it.
56:27So you can get away with it.
