00:02:29I grew up watching Zorro and the Swamp Fox, you know, which was about the American Revolution, Robin Hood, I
00:02:38mean, all these tales of swashbucklers and people who were fighting against the government.
00:02:47I really thought that I would end up being an astronaut.
00:02:52I went to the University of Florida for engineering.
00:02:55I thought that would be my way to get to be an astronaut.
00:03:04When I got to college, I ran into a whole new world.
00:03:15The thing that you remember growing up was, we saved the world from Hitler.
00:03:20And then you turn around and we're being Hitler.
00:03:26You see this every night and it's just like, oh my God, you know, it's like, what's going on here?
00:03:50There has been and continues to be opposition to the war in Vietnam on the campuses and also in the
00:03:57nation.
00:03:58As far as this kind of activity is concerned, we expect it.
00:04:04However, under no circumstances will I be affected whatever by it.
00:04:10I was pretty militant.
00:04:12I helped shut down the college because I was a student then at UC Berkeley.
00:04:19It was almost like a kid that decided their parents were just disgusting people.
00:04:25That's, I know that's a weird way to sum it up, but we just felt like there was no future.
00:04:33It was way too extreme, the difference between what was really going on and what was bandied about in school.
00:04:46I mean, we were just running rampant throughout the world and just lying like hell about it.
00:04:54And then, then Kent State happened and I was shocked just like everybody else.
00:05:04Especially everyone on all the campuses.
00:05:13Then I felt like, in no uncertain terms, that people like me were being declared the enemy by the government
00:05:21of the United States.
00:05:24I don't think that most of the young people involved who considered themselves part of the counterculture saw themselves so
00:05:32much as revolutionaries or renegades, as people think they did, or as the establishment kept accusing them of being.
00:05:39They actually saw themselves, if they did not admit it as such, as patriots.
00:05:46Most everybody that I ever knew that was a radical were go-getters in high school.
00:05:50I was a national science finalist.
00:05:53I, you know, had a gigantic IQ and all this, and most everybody did.
00:05:58You know, it was all these high achievers.
00:06:00We were just shocked.
00:06:13It just got to the point where I felt like this thing is totally out of control.
00:06:17The country is totally out of control.
00:06:19It's being run by criminals.
00:06:20It's being run by just total right-wingers who have no respect for the Constitution or anything else.
00:06:28That's the way I felt when I left and went to California.
00:06:42I didn't necessarily think that I would ever live to see a revolution.
00:06:47It seemed like it was more revolutionary, you know, in the late 60s than it was by the time I
00:06:53got to Berkeley.
00:07:01We were pulling out of Vietnam.
00:07:03A lot of people were going, you know, everything's over now.
00:07:05We'll go back to college.
00:07:06And, I mean, it wasn't over at all.
00:07:08The same stuff was still going on, you know.
00:07:12The same criminals were still, murderers and stuff, were still running the government, you know.
00:07:19I was on the ground, you know.
00:07:24I was on the ground.

00:07:40I couldn't believe it that Nixon got reelected in the 72.

00:07:48I just felt like, you know, we've got to keep something going.
00:07:56One of the things I did that other people got involved in
00:07:59was show these films, political films,
00:08:02about what was going on in the world.
00:08:20The events in this film actually took place in a South American country.
00:08:25State of Siege.
00:08:27One of the groups that I was really, you know, I really liked,
00:08:30and I guess it's back to the old Robin Hood and Zorro thing,
00:08:33was the Two Pomoros down in Uruguay.
00:08:36State of Siege, I did see that.
00:08:39If you consider yourself a revolutionary, if you want to change things,
00:08:42and I thought, well, these guys got it figured out.
00:08:46And Che, of course, I thought he was great.
00:08:48He was from Bolivia.
00:08:49He was down in Cuba helping the Cubans.
00:08:51Hey! Che!
00:08:53Superhero to some.
00:08:54Villain to others.
00:08:56His battle cry is heard around the world.
00:08:59Che lives.
00:09:00Only Sharif, with his dramatic force
00:09:02and amazing physical likeness to Che, could play the part.
00:09:07It's funny how all these things happen,
00:09:09but that's where Willie and I met Bill and Emily and Joe.
00:09:15Is it one of these films?
00:09:30Willie was kind of like the catalyst.
00:09:32Willie was the one that all these different people met.
00:09:37Willie was like the common denominator.
00:09:41Willie studied anthropology at Berkeley,
00:09:44and it was actually through Berkeley that he got into going to prisons.
00:09:48It was from some class, some anthropology class.
00:09:54I think that my and the people around me that I knew had such a total distrust to this country
00:10:01at that point that, you know, San Quentin, Vietnam was the same thing.
00:10:12I was interested in the prisons, actually.
00:10:15And when I found out that Willie and them were going, then I went.
00:10:19So, Willie came, you know, I think Willie's the one who started, but I mean, there were discussions about, well,
00:10:24you know, what about it?
00:10:25We know there are people in prison that we don't think should be there, you know?
00:10:29You know, what are we willing to do about that, you know?
00:10:32Yeah, we can visit them.
00:10:33We can try to get people to, you know, donate money.
00:10:36We can try to find lawyers to help them and stuff.
00:10:38But what else are we willing to do, you know?
00:10:41And there was talk about, you know, what if somebody escaped, you know?
00:10:44Or what if we could help somebody escape, you know?
00:10:46And, you know, so we started talking along those lines.
00:10:53By then, every black prisoner in California prisons was regarded in one way or another as a political prisoner,
00:11:01which had a bit of truth connected to it, but a whole lot of romantic bullshit as well.
00:11:11The idea that made black prisoners at the time so-called political prisoners
00:11:15was that they had been denied sufficient opportunity in society
00:11:19and had reached out to take their share.
00:11:25De Vries wasn't just some criminal.
00:11:29I mean, he wasn't some guy who was just like some pimp or some dope dealer from day one.
00:11:34De Vries had been married, he had kids, he worked full-time.
00:11:38It's just, I think he couldn't live the American dream, the thing you're seeing on TV.
00:11:44He couldn't do it just by working.
00:11:46So he also became a thief.
00:11:51You know, I liked the guy.
00:11:53I liked him.
00:12:01Willie took De Vries over to Ms. Moon, Ms. Moon's house, to hide him out.
00:12:10He got transferred over to Nancy Perry's.
00:12:15So De Vries and Nancy and Ms. Moon, they were living out in Concord.
00:12:23You got your very own escaped convict?
00:12:25I mean, come on.
00:12:25I mean, if there was status in knowing black political prisoners,
00:12:29there was one hell of a lot of status within the so-called revolutionaries
00:12:32in actually being able to hide out an escapee,
00:12:35who would then prove to be, you know, something more than just an escapee.
00:12:40I think that was the beginning of it.
00:12:43Probably him and Ms. Moon were the two first members, I would think.
00:12:47Then Russ Little, you know, knew him.
00:12:50I know people want to make De Vries a leader or some kind of Manson figure or something like that,
00:12:56but that's just not my experience, you know.
00:13:03It became obvious to us that, you know, what we were really doing
00:13:06was that we were, like, forming our own little group
00:13:10to be able to respond to things,
00:13:14to be able to do things that were illegal.
00:13:18This forest is wide.
00:13:20Can shelter and clothe and feed a band of good determined men,
00:13:23good swordsmen, good archers, good fighters.
00:13:26Are you with me?
00:13:36We familiarized ourselves with weapons.
00:13:38You know, we bought weapons.
00:13:40They weren't militant in any way, or, uh, in fact,
00:13:44most of them had decent personalities and, uh, nice people.
00:13:49I mean, when we didn't have some great plan,
00:13:51we weren't gonna, like, well, now we'll take the South in, uh, 75,
00:13:56and then we'll move into the Midwest in 76.
00:13:59I mean, we didn't, you know, this wasn't,
00:14:01we didn't think we were Mao out there with the Red Army.
00:14:07We practiced, sure.
00:14:09We practiced at the gun ranges just like everybody else practiced.
00:14:12We practiced.
00:14:29Our officers arrived immediately, and, uh, both Mr. Blackburn and Dr. Forster
00:14:34were transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland, uh, where, uh, Dr. Forster, uh,
00:14:39uh, was pronounced deceased.
00:14:41The murder of Marcus Foster, who was the school superintendent in Oakland,
00:14:46was one of these appalling acts that made no sense whatsoever.
00:14:50Here was the first black school superintendent in the history of Oakland,
00:14:53the good man, suddenly gunned down.
00:14:59Who actually pulled the trigger that killed Foster was Ms. Moon.
00:15:10Nancy was supposed to shoot Blackburn.
00:15:15She kind of botched that in the freeze and ended up shooting him with a shotgun.
00:15:24If I recall correctly, I was about to leave the office one day
00:15:27when I stopped to check my mailbox.
00:15:29I looked in, and there was this communique sent from the Symbionese Liberation Army
00:15:36saying that they had assassinated Foster.
00:15:39I remember being struck by the fact they said we used cyanide-tipped bullets.
00:15:43I mean, the whole thing sounded ridiculous.
00:15:46The Symbionese Liberation Army killing the black school superintendent.
00:15:50Who were these people?
00:15:52We thought for sure it was just some lunatic right-wing fringe,
00:15:56and we just figured Symbionese was like some, you know,
00:16:01white farmers in Rhodesia or something.
00:16:04My name is Faiza, and I am a freedom fighter in an information intelligence unit
00:16:09of the United Federated Forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army.
00:16:14I try to use my mind and my imagination to uncover facts
00:16:18so that when the S.L.A. attacks, it will be in the right place.
00:16:23I remember saying, why?
00:16:24This guy, why would you kill a black guy?
00:16:27Jesus Christ, man.
00:16:28It's like, you know, there's black people being killed all over the place, man.
00:16:32If you're going to kill somebody, why in the world would it be him?
00:16:36And as far as DeVries was concerned, Foster was the front man for some just horrendous police apparatus that was
00:16:45set up.
00:16:52The issue was ID for high school students.
00:16:55And the funny thing is, is everybody today that's been even, even mildly associated with the S.L.A.
00:17:01Just about everyone has kids, and all of us want those IDs. That's the funny thing.
00:17:23Ramiro and Russell Little were taken into custody two nights ago, and they exchanged shots with a conquered policeman.
00:17:29Before the day was over, Joseph Ramiro had been accused of the murder of Oakland School's chief, Dr. Marcus Foster.
00:17:36They found us in the van. Joe was in a shootout with the cop and everything.
00:17:39As far as they're concerned, man, we're armed and dangerous revolutionaries.
00:17:44Within less than 48 hours, we were in San Quentin prison.
00:17:47I mean, I'd never even been arrested before.
00:17:51Ramiro, at the time we were investigating, and we regarded him as their armorer.
00:17:55That is, someone who took care of the weapons.
00:17:57And Little was more of a logistical support person.
00:18:00He was close to DeFreeze, and would have been, I think, aware of whatever decision was made to kill Foster.
00:18:23We found Mr. Little's identification at the Sutherland Address in Concord that we were working on.
00:18:29We've identified him by witnesses at that location.
00:18:32We also found a map of the scene of the murder at the Oakland Public Schools, showing the location where
00:18:39Dr. Foster hadn't been killed, and the map was identified by the word ambush across the top.
00:18:44Has your investigation uncovered any evidence as to the size of this Liberation Army?
00:18:49No. The only thing I can say is that it has grown day by day.
00:18:55Everybody saw us together all the time.
00:18:57I mean, after we got arrested, man, they were totally tied to us, you know.
00:19:05At that point, you only have two choices.
00:19:08Either just drop out of everything and disappear, or, you know, go into hiding and try to figure out what
00:19:16to do next.
00:19:17And that's what they did.
00:19:21They had massive files on all the heads of all the big international corporations who were involved in overthrowing Chile
00:19:29and everything else that was going on.
00:19:32They were gathering information on all that.
00:19:34They just had some massive investigative research thing going on.
00:19:40The SLA, in its formative time at that point, was looking for targets.
00:19:48Emily Harris worked in the registrar's office at UC Berkeley, so they had a pretty fair knowledge of who was
00:19:57at Berkeley, and they were looking for the right one.
00:20:17There's been a big kidnapping on the West Coast.
00:20:20The victim is Patricia Hurst, the daughter of newspaper executive Randolph Hurst, and a granddaughter of the legendary William Randolph
00:20:27Hurst.
00:20:29Ms. Hurst, newspaper heiress and daughter of Randolph Hurst, managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner, is a University of
00:20:36California sophomore.
00:20:37She screamed when the men burst in and started beating her fiancé, 26-year-old Steven Weed.
00:20:43The young heiress was forced into the trunk of a white car.
00:20:46Her abductors, armed with pistols and a rifle, fired a hail of bullets as they sped away, followed by a
00:20:52second vehicle.
00:20:53Police say the whole thing was carried out with commando-like precision.
00:20:57They said absolutely nothing. They were very militaristic. They had it so well planned that they needed to say almost
00:21:05nothing to each other.
00:21:11The national media immediately focused on it as a kidnapping case and then understood, you know, the revolutionary aspects of
00:21:23it.
00:21:24But in effect, what they did was park outside Randolph Hurst's mansion.
00:21:31It was the only place to go. And so they made a story of it to some degree.
00:21:36I was first from the hotel in Hillbrook, John.
00:21:40So I'd get calls in the morning saying, who's there?
00:21:43Well, two's here and so is four and so is five. I'm seven.
00:21:46Well, you better hang around.
00:21:48And so no one left because the other was there.
00:21:53We had the same questions that everybody else had.
00:21:56Where is this thing going to go? Who are these people? What do they want?
00:22:02The United Federated Forces of the Symbionese Liberation Army, armed with cyanide loaded weapons, served an arrest warrant upon Patricia
00:22:11Campbell Hurst.
00:22:13All communications from this court must be published in full in all newspapers and all other forms of the media.
00:22:20Failure to do so will endanger the safety of the prisoner.
00:22:24Should any attempt be made by authorities to rescue the prisoner or to arrest or harm any SLA elements, the
00:22:30prisoner is to be executed.
00:22:33And in capital letters under that is death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people.
00:22:48We heard this stuff. We were locked down in the adjustment center in San Quentin.
00:22:52And all this stuff hit the media and we just couldn't believe it.
00:22:57The heat on us was bad enough. After that happened, man, it was just really a nightmare.
00:23:03We are now the SLA personified, the premier anti-government terrorists.
00:23:12At that point, they stuck us up on death row in the strip cells up there and did all kinds
00:23:19of shit.
00:23:20You know, I mean, put us in the gas chamber, did, you know, everything they could think of.
00:23:28But we weren't going to start changing our tune. We figured we were dead anyway. Why should we snivel our
00:23:34way out of it?
00:23:38Do you have any feelings about your son being moved to death row at San Quentin?
00:23:43Well, I think it was very silly. I mean, under the Constitution, you're innocent and found guilty.
00:23:48You were in the hearing he hadn't even been brought to trial. So what would you say?
00:23:51Wouldn't you say it was a very silly thing to do?
00:23:54We had read about this and watched movies about it. Now we got to be in Attica, you know, as
00:24:03revolutionaries, no less.
00:24:07Now you talk about State of Siege in the movie, for example. I mean, that's the way the SLA kind
00:24:13of envisioned it.
00:24:13The kidnap was meant as a prisoner swap. They meant, frankly, to grab Patricia Hurst and Trader for Russell Little
00:24:22and Joe Romero.
00:24:28What we received in the mail today appears to me to be a seven page statement from the SLA, plus
00:24:34a tape recording which reports to be somebody from the SLA and also the voice of Patricia Hurst.
00:24:40And according to the demands which we'll outline here, it says that all of these things must be publicized in
00:24:46full, which is what we're doing right now.
00:24:48We knew they weren't about to release us because they had Patty Hurst.
00:24:55They realize they're not going to get a prisoner exchange. The next best thing they can do is to create
00:25:05some kind of enormous act. So that's the food giveaway.
00:25:16We have heard it said that Mr. Hurst wants to save his daughter. We want to save all the children
00:25:21and people. Each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for four successive weeks, each person with one of the listed cards can
00:25:28go to publicized stores and pick up their food.
00:25:31The meat, vegetables and dairy products must be of top quality and an ample supply during all-store hours.
00:25:37No, and it's as outrageous as they can think of it. I mean, they want the supermarkets emptied and food
00:25:44thrown into the streets. I mean, that's really what it amounted to.
00:25:48General Field Marshal CIN SLA. And what we're going to play next, as per instructions from the SLA, is a
00:25:57tape recording from the SLA which purports to contain the voice of the kidnapped victim Patricia Hurst.
00:26:07Mom, Dad, I'm okay. I'm with a combat unit that's armed with automatic weapons. And these people aren't just a
00:26:24bunch of nuts.
00:26:25They've been really honest with me, but they're perfectly willing to die for what they're doing. And I want to
00:26:36get out of here, but the only way I'm going to is if we do it their way.
00:26:45And I just hope that you'll do what they say, Dad, and just do it quickly.
00:26:51And I mean, I hope that this puts you a little bit at ease and that you know that I
00:26:56really am all right.

00:27:17letter from the Seminese Liberation Army, which was full of very bizarre demands.
00:27:22This morning an FBI man said that the demand for $300 million worth of free food for human welfare was,
00:27:27in his words, in the realm of unreasonableness.
00:27:32you sounded a little tired or like you were sedated but you sounded all right and i'm sure
00:27:37that the people that have you are telling the truth when they say they're treating you under
00:27:45the geneva convention i just want you to know that i'm going to do everything i can to get
00:27:52you out of there it's a little frightening because the original demand is what i was afraid of from
00:28:00the beginning is that one that's impossible to meet however uh in the next 24 or 48 hours i'll be
00:28:11trying to do my best to come back with some kind of a counter-offer it's acceptable
00:28:22it's very difficult because i have no one to negotiate with
00:28:30except through a letter that generally comes two or three days later than we expected
00:28:39anyways you can rest assured that your mother and i and all the family will do everything we can to
00:28:47get you out tell them not to worry nobody's going to bust in on them or start a shoot up
00:28:55and you take care of yourself they waited to see what hearst would do and did very little work to
00:29:03try to find out what the sla might do or who the sla might be that ominous quiet continues at
00:29:10the hearst
00:29:10home and that tense frustrating wait goes on we never discussed it as to should we be doing this

00:33:26people in was to try and approach this as a terrorist investigation as well as a kidnap case
00:33:37the u2 was flying sorties up over the high sierra looking at campsites and things like this during
00:33:44the initial search days
00:33:53the tapes were sent to the cia headquarters to be listened to by blind people whose hearing is extremely
00:34:01acute and they heard things in the background that the ordinary ear would never pick up greetings to

00:36:43arrangements have been made for two million dollars to be delivered to a tax-exempt charitable
00:36:48organization capable of making a distribution for the benefit of the poor and needy he walked out the
00:36:54front door and said lud kramer's going to handle the food distribution and that was it

01:17:52and all these naive radicals just hearing what they wanted to hear basically you know they wanted
01:18:00to a rich person to convert to their cause she was just they just had a mutual agenda for a
01:18:07little
01:18:07while that's all it was as it turns out you know we were all fooled
01:18:14i don't believe patty's legal problems are that serious after all she's primarily a kidnap victim
01:18:20she never went off into anything of her own free will
01:18:34it is probably the mystery story of the 20th century and it finally unfolded today one version of it
01:18:40patty hurst's own version of it here at the federal courthouse in san francisco as the whole world watched
01:18:47it unfolded in this shocking chilling and deeply moving affidavit filed by patty hurst herself through
01:18:54her attorneys she was placed in a closet on the floor the closet was approximately five to six feet in
01:19:01length and about two and a half or three feet in width during all this time she was in a
01:19:08constant
01:19:08state of fear and terror and expected at any moment to be murdered by her captors after an
01:19:16interminable length of time which seemed to her to be weeks she was released from the closet and
01:19:23seated with the gang of captors when the blindfold was removed she felt as if she were on an lsd
01:19:30trip
01:19:31everything appeared so distorted and terrible that she believed and feared she was losing her sanity
01:19:39she was put in an automobile and taken to a site which she now understands was a branch of the
01:19:45hibernia
01:19:46bank she was given a gun and directed to stand about in the center of the bank counter
01:19:53meanwhile one of her captors armed with a gun which was kept pointed at her kept an eye on her
01:19:58and had
01:19:59told her in advance that if she made one false move or did anything except announce her name she would
01:20:06be killed instantly when she was taken back to her place of captivity she was told by them that she
01:20:16was
01:20:16now guilty of bank robbery and murder and that the fbi would shoot her on sight in her disordered and
01:20:23frightened mind this appeared to her to be probable and it was so insisted upon by members of the gang
01:20:29that she finally came to believe it the recollection of everything that transpired up to the time that
01:20:35she was arrested has been as though she lived in a fall in which she was confused still unable to
01:20:42distinguish between actuality and fantasy
01:21:12and the fact that she lived in the past she lived in the past she lived in the past she
01:21:17lived in the past
01:21:19part of the dilemma of understanding patricia hurst in this whole thing is that
01:21:26there are so many obvious opportunities she had to simply walk down the street
01:21:32hail a cab get in the car and call her father call me anybody you know and it was over
01:21:39she never did
01:21:42him

01:23:24I was 24 years old when I got arrested.
01:23:26You know, people talk about, Hurst was only 19.

01:23:46Four former Symbionese Liberation Army members accused of murdering a Carmichael woman during a bank robbery in 1975 plead guilty

01:23:54In court, four of the SLA members who pulled off the heist apologized 27 years after Myrna Opsal was killed

01:24:08Each of these defendants entered a plea of guilty to murder in the second degree.

01:24:15This is the time and the place for judgment of the sentence.
01:24:18When we finish today, the defendants will be remanded into custody to serve sentences in state prison.
01:24:27As I stated last time, the fact that Mrs. Opsal was murdered unintentionally in the bank is of no consequence
01:24:40to the family and the fact that we beat ourselves up more than anyone could
01:24:49and really alienated ourselves from what we believed in and ostracized ourselves.
01:24:56And that's probably the saddest thing about these kind of cases.
01:25:01Whether you're well-intentioned or poor-intentioned or not, there's not a good result.
01:25:07A woman is dead and many people suffer from those consequences.
01:25:11And I can offer nothing but my apologies and I'm sorry.
01:25:36Ms. Montague will be sentenced to eight years in prison.
01:25:39Mr. Harris will be sentenced to seven years in prison.
01:25:42Ms. Olsen will be sentenced to six years in prison.
01:25:45Mr. Borton will be sentenced to six years in prison.
