00:06:01My mother worked in a five-and-dime store.

00:06:35We pretty much, as kids, ran on our own all over town.

00:06:43You know, a home to be in bed at a certain time and so forth.
00:06:46But it was a good family.
00:06:51I was actually in, like, ninth or tenth grade in high school.
00:06:55I just wanted to work in theater.
00:06:58I think I wanted to be a designer or a director.
00:07:02It's clear that I wanted to be in show business somehow.
00:07:05I really didn't like college.
00:07:09A friend of mine and myself would volunteer to work at a local theater in Harrisburg.
00:07:14Then I was offered a job in Illinois at a dinner theater in Illinois.
00:07:21In dinner theaters, people would come and eat and watch show business.
00:07:24Actually, that was my first experience with segregation.
00:07:29Because we did a show called Pinion's Rainbow.
00:07:34And all of the blacks that were in the show were not allowed to be in the hotel.
00:07:40Or the pool.
00:07:41Or anywhere near the hotel.
00:07:43The owners of the hotel and the theater were the ones that said, they can't be here.
00:07:52Even though they were performing in the theater.
00:07:54That kind of stuff was going on everywhere.
00:07:57Living in a small town in Pennsylvania, you saw very few black people.
00:08:02So we never had to think about it.
00:08:04It never came up, really.
00:08:05So when I experienced it and saw what was happening and how it happened
00:08:09and couldn't understand why it was happening, that changed me.

00:09:44After a while, we had another child.
00:09:47And I got busier in the business.
00:09:50What happens to most people in my business is you wind up marrying your business.
00:09:55And that's what I did.

00:09:57And eventually we separated.
00:10:01I just left Chicago and moved to Los Angeles.
00:10:08I moved there with a girl from Chicago for a while.
00:10:13Okay, I'm guessing that didn't sit too well with the kids.

00:10:27Then Rosalind moved with the kids to Albuquerque.
00:10:34It took me about a year and a half to get a job in Hollywood.
00:10:40But then ABC hired me for a job.

00:10:55We met and I found her very attractive and asked her out.
00:10:59And eventually we came together.
00:11:04I think a lot of people won't understand, particularly at that time,
00:11:08just how unusual mixed race relationships would have been in America.

00:11:14Not everybody seems to approve of those kind of relationships.
00:11:18Some people within our families shunned it.
00:11:22In Los Angeles, proper, no problem.
00:11:25But in Woodland Hills, more of a problem.
00:11:28In Woodland Hills, a lot of the people in Woodland Hills would look at Dory thinking she was a housekeeper.
00:11:34And I saw the problem that she was having with that.
00:11:36I understood that.
00:11:38And it wasn't fair.
00:11:39Of course it wasn't fair.
00:11:46I think she was going through the same problem right now with the Royals.
00:11:53Oh God, I'll get in trouble for this, but I don't think they know where to place her.
00:11:57She always looks scared.
00:11:59She always looks like the deer in the headlights.
00:12:02She never looks comfortable standing there, being there.
00:12:06And I don't know if that's just her or if people are making her feel that way.
00:12:12The idea that the wedding, sitting her alone, was the dumbest thing on earth.

00:12:21Well, you know, it made no sense.
00:12:30We do decide to get married.
00:12:32Some people are a little shocked.
00:12:34At that time, I think Dave was about 12.
00:12:39Tom was probably about 9, I guess.
00:12:42They felt they were having some troubles with their mom.
00:12:44And they both wanted to be back with me.
00:12:48And Doria was very helpful about all that stuff.
00:12:51I don't know if she was so happy about it, but she was certainly helpful.

00:13:00The kids are living with you.
00:13:02And then Doria gets pregnant, right?

00:13:06She said I'm pregnant and I was really happy about it.
00:13:08This was the first time I could really actually afford a child, right?
00:13:14And I really looked forward to having another baby.
00:13:17And I wanted that one, for sure.

00:27:08trying to just get a job and then to get a job that does really well and people are loving
00:27:13is, it's the dream. We're living the dream. At that point, she was worth at least $4.5 million
00:27:21and she was making better than $40,000 an episode.
00:27:35I pretty much have a fairly decent retirement. It's about $5,600 a month and to most people
00:27:42it might not be a lot, but I'm quite comfortable with it. And living in Mexico, I do very well.
00:27:51It's going to rain in about 42 minutes.
00:27:54My daughter tends to think that she's supporting me at the times and that's not true at all.
00:28:01There's a suggestion that Megan has somehow let you down by not giving you money and then
00:28:07there's other suggestions that she has given you some money. And I mean, well, she has explained
00:28:14what, what, again, what's the truth of it? She hasn't let me down. She has given me some money,
00:28:21but like she gave me $5,000 for Christmas. Most of the money given to me was gifts. Only on
00:28:30one or two
00:28:30occasions did I ask her for a little help and it was never more than a couple grand. She actually
00:28:36told
00:28:37me one day, this is when she's angry with me, that over a two-year period she had given me
00:28:44$20,000.
00:28:46The bottom line here is I paid for her college, I paid for her union cards, I paid for her
00:28:52apartments,
00:28:53I paid for everything to get her where she is. I'm not saying she has to pay me back,
00:28:58but I'm saying it's awfully picky and awfully small to be saying, I gave you all this money
00:29:04when it was $20,000 over two years.
00:29:14My daughter was like coming up to the A-list in terms of her company and her friends.
00:29:20She called me on the phone and she said, I've got a new boyfriend. And I said, great. And she
00:29:27said,
00:29:27he's British. I said, okay. And she said, he's a prince. I said, all right. She said, he's Prince Harry.
00:29:38I said, oh, okay. I didn't know what it meant. She could have been dating a Hollywood star and it
00:29:45would
00:29:45have been just as important to me because, you know, either way they're both high numbers. And she said,
00:29:53you want to talk to him? Boom, hand me the phone. And he said, hello, in a very British way.
00:29:58And
00:29:59we talked a bit and that was nice.
00:30:07Stepping out together was the moment Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to show the world they
00:30:11were serious and they want this relationship to last.
00:30:16She was just really thrilled to be with this guy. She was happy and that made me happy. But
00:30:24very shortly after, the press started looking for me.

00:32:12They'd take close-up photographs of me grabbing a can of beer out of a freezer or a refrigerator.
00:32:18I suddenly became an alcoholic.
00:32:21You try to avoid them. You go out later at night. You go out real late at night.
00:32:25Sometimes you just don't go out at all. But they're always there.
00:32:34It angers me. But the downside of this is stress.
00:32:40And one of the worst things you can have when you have a heart condition is stress.
00:32:45And I get it every day.
00:32:48Meghan and Harry said, we'll protect you from this.
00:32:51And basically their protection was to just simply say, don't talk to anybody.
00:32:58I went to an ATM in town and I took some money, turned around and walked out.
00:33:03And there's a guy there greeting me with a bottle of champagne, a box of tea, right?
00:33:10Congratulating me and saying, how do I feel?
00:33:12Well, I did respond back and said, I think it's great. I think it's really great.
00:33:18And I took the tea and I took the champagne.
00:33:25I talked to Meghan and Harry about it.
00:33:28Harry said, that's probably taking a bribe.
00:33:31And Meghan said, you should never talk to these people.
00:33:35But this is in the middle of the street, right?
00:33:39Me going to my car. I'm approached by someone saying this to me.
00:33:44So what am I supposed to do?
00:33:52The royal family never sent anyone here to give me advice or do anything for me.
00:34:03I thought that the natural thing would be to give me some kind of instruction or some kind of help
00:34:10or guidance.
00:34:12No one gave me any attention at all. Not that I need the attention, but I might need the help.

00:41:41Every paper seemed to want to make me look like a dumb fat slob.

00:42:06I can change your image. He said, he said,
00:42:08the problem you have is that all these photographs of you are terrible.
00:42:12They make you look awful. And he said, I can make you look respectable.
00:42:17He said, well, we'll go out and take some photographs of you.
00:42:20This will look like you're getting in shape for the wedding.
00:42:23The idea was that these would all be candid shots, discreet, no one would know.
00:42:28They were posed or anything. It would be just me doing my routine daily.
00:42:35There's a hill and he wants me to run up that hill. I have a bad knee.
00:42:39I said, I can't be running up the hill. So I'm sort of limping up the hill, holding two weights.
00:42:46And then we went to a coffee shop and he gives me this British book, this royal British book.
00:42:54He said, go read the book. I'm going outside and take your picture through the window.
00:42:59He wanted to go to a wedding place so I could be measured for clothing.
00:43:05We went to the place. It was locked. And then he said, let's go downstairs to the party store.
00:43:11There's a place downstairs that has banners and crap hanging in there.
00:43:15And he hands the kid a measure and says, measure him.
00:43:17And he goes across the street and takes pictures of us.
00:43:20And how were you feeling when this photo shoot was?
00:43:23I was feeling that this was very hokey and hammy.
00:43:26But he keeps saying, you got to trust me. I've done this a hundred times.
00:43:32Let's go. You'll like this. This will work for you.
00:43:36Then after that, we went to a internet cafe.
00:43:46He says, move to the right a little bit so I can get a better shot of this screen.
00:43:53And then that was it.
00:43:56So I'm going to put these up right away.
00:43:59And he says, you're going to love it.
00:44:01And they're going to love you.
00:44:03And the unfortunate thing is that, of course, every store has a video sometime.
00:44:08And apparently, the Daily Mail went into the computer cafe and checked it out.
00:44:15And they bought the videos from the store.
00:44:21Me posing for photos and cashing in, I mean, it came out that way.
00:44:28What role did money play in all of this?
00:44:31I didn't do it for money. I did this to change my image.
00:44:35But you were getting paid in some form, weren't you?
00:44:38Yeah. The photographs are by a percentage. I think it's in the contract, it's 30%.

00:44:49There's an irony here, which is that you must still be making money off the use of the picture.

00:45:55Royal wedding scammers, Meghan Markle's father's stage photos with paparazzi that were shared around the world and sold for up

00:46:08The revelation that Mr. Markle has been cooperating with the paparazzi will cause huge embarrassment.
00:46:14It will be galling for Harry, who hit out at the paparazzi for the way in which they pursued his

00:46:30I talked to Jeff about this when this came out and said, what the hell is going on?

00:46:48He said, just lie about it.

00:46:55It won't be there tomorrow.

00:47:18So we've been talking for like three days now, something like that.

00:47:27How did you find yesterday and what sort of night did you have?
00:47:30Well, yesterday was more difficult for me than any of the rest of the day.
00:47:36I couldn't get to sleep thinking about it most of the night.
00:47:40The pose shots that will haunt me for the rest of my life and follow me forever.
00:47:44I'll never be able to escape.
00:47:46It'll always be there.
00:47:47And I feel kind of stupid, but I should have been a little smarter about it.

00:49:11I'm guessing around 9 or 10.
00:49:12And they took me in and said, we'll stabilize you and take care of you.
00:49:17They took me down for an angiogram.
00:49:25It was bad.
00:49:26The doctor said that would kill me.
00:49:35They replaced or put a stent here.
00:49:38And I think another one here.
00:49:40I'm not sure.
00:49:40But for sure one here.
00:49:52I had the procedure and I even asked the doctor, I asked him, can I fly tomorrow?
00:49:57And he laughed at me and said, there's no way in hell you can fly anywhere.
00:50:02So I spoke to Megan and Harry.
00:50:07I think I rang them at this point because I had already told them I would be coming now.
00:50:13I called and said, I can't come.
00:50:16I'm sure Megan cried and was very upset.
00:50:20And Harry seemed upset.
00:50:27Harry said to me, if you had listened to me, this would not have happened to you.
00:50:32If I had stayed in the house and kept the door locked and never spoken to anyone,
00:50:35this wouldn't have happened.
00:50:38And to me, that was a very rude thing to say,
00:50:44especially when he knew I was laying in a hospital bed.
00:50:48At that point, I said to him,
00:50:52it's too bad I didn't die because you guys could pretend that you're sad.
00:50:57And then I hung up on him. I was done.
00:51:02Now that may have caused everything. I don't know.
00:51:05But I've not heard from them or spoken to them since.

00:51:39Yesterday, Meghan Markle ended days of speculation and confusion
00:51:42when she announced her father would not walk her down the aisle.

00:52:49So I made their image appear a little bit better.
00:52:53Had I not been able to treat that, I'd be dead. I wouldn't be here now.
00:52:58I just wouldn't be here. According to the doctor, I wouldn't be here.
00:53:00The day after, they march you around. They make you march around and get your blood going.
00:53:07And then they told me, well, tomorrow we're going to send you home.
00:53:12One of the administrators from the hospital came up to where I was at.
00:53:16And she said, there's press all over the place downstairs waiting for you.
00:53:21She said, I'm going to sneak you out the back door.
00:53:25She put me in a wheelchair and got me into a van.
00:53:28And I couldn't go back to my house because they were there. The press was there.
00:53:33So I stayed at a little safe house.
00:53:38And I watched the wedding on a little television set laying on the couch.
00:53:50My daughter looked beautiful.
00:54:04I wish that I could have been there with her.
00:54:06I was certainly appreciative that Charles was there and walking her down.
00:54:12Yeah, I was jealous of him. I really wanted to do that.
00:54:18I'll admit that I cried a little bit about that.
00:54:31To this day, I can't forget that moment.
00:54:34But she looked beautiful, and it was a nice wedding.

00:55:24My message would be, I love you, I miss you, and I want to be her child's grandfather,
00:55:32and I want to be near them.
00:55:34I want to be a part of their life.
00:55:38I've helped her with every step of her life up to that point.

00:56:09So for her to suddenly, like, forget me, take me out of the picture and forget my name,
00:56:15and suddenly do this ghosting thing, is very harmful and hurtful to me.

00:56:24I am talked out of every conversation.
00:56:28When she makes a speech, or she makes a speech about dishwashing liquid,
00:56:33it's a famous speech, right?
00:56:36Usually, the beginning of that speech is I ask my dad, and my dad said to write a letter.
00:56:44I went home and I told my dad what had happened, and he encouraged me to write letters.
00:56:50So I did, to the most powerful people I could think of.
00:56:56And then at the end of the speech, she says, there should be more people like my dad.
00:57:01We need more men like that, just as we need more men like my father,
00:57:10who championed my 11-year-old self, to stand up for what is right.
00:57:18But now, she never mentions me.
00:57:22She approached all these young girls and said that she worked her way through college
00:57:27and with scholarship and work.
00:57:31That's exactly what she said. She worked her way through.
00:57:34It was through scholarships, financial aid programs, and work study,
00:57:39where my earnings from a job on campus went directly towards my tuition,
00:57:42that I was able to attend university.
00:57:45It's simply not true. I paid for a college, and it took me years to get it paid off.
00:57:53To hear, you know, that I'm ghosted, and I don't exist, and she did this on her own, is very
00:57:59hurtful.
00:58:11Megan's letters are always in calligraphy.
00:58:14You see her penmanship, and you know exactly who it is.
00:58:17I'm very excited. I think this is good news.
00:58:21And it did not turn out to be good news.
00:58:25There's no love and no thought of concern for me in this letter.
00:58:32I felt like shit. I just wanted to hear something positive, and it wasn't.
00:58:38I kept that letter for about six months, and then these lies started coming out.
00:58:45People magazine had an article by quote-unquote friends of Megan.
00:58:51In this article, the friends of Megan were saying that she wrote a conciliatory letter to me.
00:58:58She was reaching out to me and trying to make peace with me, and she was being loving.
00:59:06They dissed me, calling me a liar. It seemed to me like it was set up.
00:59:13These people can't just run and give an article to the paper without running it through the Royals or Megan.
00:59:19And they decided to damage me even more. But here again, then now it's become an organized defamation of me.
00:59:31So I felt I had to defend myself. So I published part of the letter.
00:59:38If you love me as you tell the press you do, please stop lying. Please stop creating so much pain.
