00:00Hey guys, another quick video for our nature and environment in Japan playlist.
00:04We made a video recently about the sounds of summer in Japan.
00:09On that video, someone commented that it must be pretty hard on the tiger.
00:14All those sounds, because it's a pretty intense sound, and the movement as well.
00:19So, yeah, for sure, for sure, with his vision and with his hearing,
00:25it must be really intense, experiencing all the movement and all the sound that goes on outside.
00:33So this is from his perspective, this is what he sees from where he lies down next to the door
00:38there.
00:39He's sort of got a love-hate relationship with it, I suspect,
00:42because it seems to stress him out a little bit,
00:44but at the same time he's just fascinated by all the goings-on, by all the movement.
00:55We've showed you lots of those cicadas in previous videos,
01:00probably something we've never mentioned before.
01:02They have a really disgusting habit or reflex, response,
01:08if you scare them intentionally or accidentally.
01:13When they take off, they take off flying.
01:16When they do, they pee.
01:18It's disgusting.
01:20So sometimes if you're out in the garden doing something,
01:22and you brush by a tree, this one in particular brush by, it's full of them.
01:27If you brush by it accidentally and disturb them, they all take off.
01:32And you can be lucky.
01:34Sometimes it doesn't get you, but occasionally they'll all take off.
01:40And this pee rains from the sky.
01:44It's disgusting.
01:45It sort of seems to be their little defensive mechanism.
01:54Funny ones.
01:55On a video, when we showed these guys recently,
01:58somebody mentioned, oh, the cicadas only last for a couple of days.
02:01That's true.
02:02Their life cycle is really short.
02:05But, unfortunately, they all come out at different times.
02:07So even though each cicada probably only lives for a couple of days,
02:12we have them out in the garden doing their thing for weeks, weeks on end.
02:17And they start at sunrise in the morning or even before sunrise.
02:21If it's hot, if it's over 30 degrees, which it often is at 5 o'clock in the morning,
02:26they'll start their squealing and they'll do it all day.
02:28And if it stays over 30 degrees at night, which it often does, they'll continue.
02:33They'll continue their noise 24 hours a day, which is pretty intense.
02:39So that's what little dudes live it with.
02:43You watch his ears, in his eyes.
02:47It's just constant movement.
02:50Even with our human eyes, you can see constant movement.
02:55For him, it must be intense.
02:57But now and again, something will crawl into his catio outside there and he'll grab it.
03:02And he's brought in about, oh, maybe until now, all sorts of creatures.
03:07He brought in a cicada recently and is eating that.
03:11But he's brought in about maybe three or four of these mukare,
03:18which some of you might remember, I got bitten by one of those a little while ago
03:24and they really hurt.
03:25So I don't know how he can mess with them and not get bitten because the bite is intense.
03:33But he seems to be able to get away with it and he brings them inside.
03:37Doesn't seem to eat those.
03:38He does eat the cicadas though.
03:40Crunches them up.
03:42So this is where he goes and hides.
03:44This is a very quiet room.
03:46Very sort of dark, quiet room.
03:48And he'll spend hours in there every day.
03:50It's where he goes and recovers and hides from the sound and the movement and so on.
03:56His peaceful place.
03:59It's also cooler too because it's still 38 degrees outside.
04:03So it's nice to go in there where the aircon is and just spend a few hours in there recovering
04:08from his activities.
