00:01Police say they were called at around 6pm last night to a house in Charleville which is an outback town
00:07in southwest Queensland around eight hours drive west of Brisbane. They told us that they arrived to what was quite
00:14a dynamic and a violent scene. So at that time they tactically withdrew and issued an emergency declaration essentially locking
00:22down several streets of Charleville. That lockdown lasted nearly eight hours. It was only lifted just after 1am.
00:30in the morning. A short while ago Southern Region Assistant Commissioner Matthew Vanderbilt spoke to the media and told us
00:36what it was like when the officers arrived on scene. Police and emergency services were called to an address in
00:41Charleville. At that address they were confronted with what was clearly quite a violent crime scene on arrival there. There
00:50were suggestions of further weapons being involved and as a direct result of that police had to tactically withdraw for
00:56their own safety. They immediately did that.
00:59But as they did so, a young child was located at the front of the residence, at the front stairs
01:05and police actually put themselves back into what I consider to be harm's way to remove that child from the
01:11premises and that child was taken to hospital and is unharmed thankfully.
01:15So quite extraordinary police officers were able to extract a toddler safely from that scene which they described as quite
01:23dynamic and violent. Specialist forces flew in from Brisbane overnight to land in the rural town and negotiators were on
01:31the scene as well.
01:32Now it's unclear at this stage the exact details of what happened in those eight hours between when police were
01:39called and that emergency declaration was lifted but what we do know is that a 23 year old woman and
01:45a 45 year old man were found dead in the property.
01:48It's yet unclear as to how they died but the ethical standards command is currently investigating.
01:55We spoke to the mayor of Charleville Sean Radnidge a short time ago. He said it's one of those small
02:01outback communities where everyone knows everyone.
02:04This kind of thing is likely to have a ripple effect across the community and impact residents, families and friends
02:10for the rest of the week.
