A new report has found the Northern Territory government is using unreliable data to back its narrative that crime is down, with legal experts saying the government is intentionally misleading the public report. Researchers at the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research say the Country Liberal Party government's reliance on NT Police data is problematic.

00:02We know that all of the reform we have taken so far has delivered a safer territory as we promised.
00:08Our measures are working.
00:09Crime data proves that what the CLP is doing is making the territory a safer place.
00:15It's a sentiment Territorians have heard again and again.
00:18The CLP promised to cut crime and it's now delivering.
00:22But a new report has found its data doesn't back that up.
00:25The report shows that every time the Northern Territory government has spoken to the public about crime rates, they've included
00:33misleading, incomplete and inaccurate data.
00:35The report released this week shows data sets can result in stark differences if timeframes are manipulated and highlights that
00:43figures from NT Police's new SERPRO system, which the government leans on, cannot reliably be compared with data from before
00:51it was introduced in 2023.
00:53I think the key finding from our report is that there is no consistent trend in crime and victimisation in
01:01the Northern Territory.
01:02So despite what some of the more popular messaging may be, there's actually no clear trend.
01:08The report draws on other statistics, highlighting victimisation rates have increased, imprisonment rates and court matters are up and demand
01:17for legal services have surged since 2024.
01:21Narja's own data showing daily arrests also up.
01:24People on the ground saying they don't feel safe.
01:27Nobody doesn't feel safe, mate, anymore.
01:29Crime's going up and a lot more people are actually staying at home, don't want to go out.
01:33In daytime there's no problem, night time I'm not too sure.
01:37We now have to be sceptical.
01:39Every time the government talks about crime we have to question whether or not they're actually intentionally misleading or hiding
01:45pieces of the story from us.
01:47Despite the warning, the Northern Territory government says crime and court statistics are publicly available.
01:53And Territorians can see for themselves that the government's record spend on police and strong law and order measures are
02:00beginning to deliver results.
02:04What is 남al and tort to deliver results?
02:04At the end, the standard capitalists go to the right and our laws.
02:04We've got to be taken to the right, I can't Google, right?
02:04This is what we've been doing in our society and we've managed to collect the alternatives.
