Man in critical condition after being shot by police in North Queensland

Investigations are continuing in the Queensland city of Townsville after a man was shot by police outside a local shopping centre.

00:00Officers say the man was wanted on Abermatters when he was seen at the Willow Shopping Centre

00:07on the outskirts of Townsville on Sunday afternoon.

00:11Obviously there was an altercation and the man was shot before being given first aid

00:16and taken to Townsville University Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

00:22Officers haven't said if the man was armed or if they used tasers in a bid to de-escalate the situation

00:29before shooting the man.

00:31Our officers are very well trained.

00:33They're trained to make a thorough risk assessment of whatever circumstances they're confronted with

00:37and they're trained to deploy a use of force that's reasonable, appropriate at the time.

00:41It comes just a week after officers fatally shot a man near the Strand

00:46who they say was armed with a knife and a machete.

00:49Both shootings are being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command.
