Did Washington get enough in return for Foster Griffin? Can the Nationals win after trading away assets?

00:48I think a lot of fans are just so mad right now.
00:52And I want to give them a platform here because Tabone arrives and it's another rebuild.
00:58And he immediately trades Mackenzie Gore.

01:07Meade is hitting way more than they expected.
01:10I'm not mad at any of the moves.
01:12I just remain incredibly skeptical of ownership.
01:16And I think those things can be separate.

01:22There's nothing new every day.
01:24So getting frustrated and mad at what you know is not a problem.
01:28I like the moves that are being made because eventually, if you are working hamstrung, you've got to figure out
01:35good ways of doing it.
01:36And the people that are here now, they're doing what they've got to do.
01:39So to get mad at the learners all the time, hell, they're not going to change.

01:47You're raising your blood pressure for no damn reason.

01:52But I think you've got to applaud the moves that are being made.

03:46So, they get one guy that probably pitches for them this year and two other pitchers and an outfield prospect
03:54that, if I had to guess, they think they can coach the power out of them.
03:57I mean, maybe with Nick Mitchell.
03:59So, yesterday was another move they made was trading away a triple-A outfielder, Christian Franklin, who is a talented
04:06guy.
04:06Kind of like a, you know, when I say five tools, like, I'm not like, oh, he's going to be
04:10some star.
04:10But, like, he's a good player with a little bit of power, and they traded him yesterday to the Baltimore
04:16Orioles, and they got yet another reliever in return.
04:19Someone who's in double-A, who has been one of the better pitchers out of the bullpen for the Orioles,
04:25but also just the minor leagues in double-A.
04:27He's been really good, but he was an undrafted guy.
04:29And so, Nick Mitchell probably comes in to replace Christian Franklin, and I think that's kind of it.
04:36We'll see what happens with him, but it's really just about the three pitchers that are coming back for the
04:40next.
04:40See, what I'm looking at right now is they've held on to their superstar power.
04:47They feel they can coach other people, and they are now trying to strengthen what we all complain about, the
04:53pitching.
04:53Yeah.
04:54And they seem to be building people for years to come.
04:58And that's the part.
05:00Listen, man, I know who's not going to spin, but right now they may be in a better situation than
05:07they were before.
05:08Well, they've also been losing, right?

05:10So the notion of chasing this wild-card berth this season, now that they've lost six in a row and
05:15seven out of eight, it's very different.
05:18But you're also going to lose this year when you trade away 45 home runs, and that's what Meade and
05:23Garcia gave you.
05:24I'm not – I can't be more clear about this.

05:31I applaud the season Butera's put together.
05:33The players, I've really enjoyed watching this Nats team.
05:37There's so much to like.
05:39I remain skeptical and mad at ownership for running a bare-budget operation.
05:45And I think those two things can be separate.
05:47And I think if fans who continuously have the goalposts reset on them as they buy tickets and hats and
05:53hot dogs, they can be pissed about that.

05:56Like, if you have season tickets and you were loving this season, and now all of a sudden you've traded
06:00away the all-star pitcher, the guy with 23 home runs, and the guy with 17 home runs, whatever those
06:04were, I get if you're pissed.

06:08But I'm saying every day discussing it, it's going to change nothing about it.
06:12Eventually, you've got to get to the point where is this thing better than what it was?
06:17Are they building something stronger than what they've had?
06:19And if you get to that point, then you understand how things are shifting in a positive manner.
06:24So, I have, listen, I used to be the type of person who got mad at everything that happened to.
06:28But you get to a point where.
06:30I think the day after the trade deadline, when you move the all-star lefty pitcher that dealt in the
06:35all-star game.
06:36But I think everybody going into it.
06:37Like, today, I think it's very relevant to be pissed off.
06:39And I understand that.
06:40But I think going into it, we felt he was going to be moved.
06:43And then when they do what we expect, why is it like a shot?
06:49We thought he was going to be moved.

06:52Because we knew if they wouldn't go sign him to an extension, the next best thing is get something for

06:59At the end of the year, he was going to leave any damn way.

07:31But before we just put a crown on this guy with Foster, we also got to remember, this guy was
07:36in Japan for three years.

07:38Like, he may have just had.
07:39They're selling assets that could have just been red-hot for a half.

08:17I think it's okay to have an emotional response while understanding, baseball-wise, these are the right moves.

08:31Like, I think that a lot of people when Scoobal got traded, the back-to-back Cy Young winner, everyone
08:36was like, oh my gosh, that's such an underpay by the Dodgers.
08:39And, you know, they didn't get their top prospect from the Dodgers.
08:43And the reality is, they got, well, yeah, obviously, yeah.
08:46The Dodgers got the back-to-back Cy Young winner.
08:49They're going to be just fine.
08:51That's what the market is, though.
08:53Like, I think people, they get so hyped because it's like, oh, like, this is what some names are thrown

08:59Like, yes, Foster Griffin has been an all-star.
09:01He's been incredible.
09:01He ain't Scoobal.
09:02But he's not Scoobal.
09:03And it's like, you know, when you look at this move, I think people wanted, like, that big premier prospect,
09:10like a one-for-one deal where it's like the Nats get, like, a top 100 prospect and the team
09:14that trades for him gets a Foster Griffin.
09:17But the way that this front office works is they're not going out there trying to get just one premier
09:23guy.
09:24They want to spread their eggs around in a couple different baskets.
09:27Think back to the McKenzie Gore trade.
09:28People at first were, like, pissed off about it.
09:31They were like, we didn't get a premier guy.
09:32And now you look at it, Devin Fitzgerald is going, blossoming into a big-time prospect for this team.
09:39Abby Ortiz comes up, hits his first major league home run last night as he's replacing Luis Garcia Jr.
09:45Alejandro Rosario is a big pitching prospect.
09:48Got Tommy John surgery, but a lot of people think he's probably the best player in that deal.
09:52We haven't even seen him yet.
09:53You get Gavin Fien, who is a 2025 first-round pick, and he's been solid in Fredericksburg.
09:58Hasn't been a crazy productive season for him, but he's been getting a lot better,
10:02and you're starting to see that.
10:03So I think this is the way that this group operates is they want to get a couple of different

10:08and try to develop them, and this season we've been praising their development.
10:12Like, they've been good at it.
10:13So I like the return.
10:15I get what they're doing, but I also understand why fans are maybe a little frustrated
10:19as to why they didn't get, like, that top guy.

12:40When they get to the point where they have a nucleus like everybody else does, they may be able to
