00:03thanks to toby for the update double dipping today welcome back toby in for danny grant and danny
00:10on the fan i am being told that the nationals have not made any other deals up against the horn
00:17here
00:17so the foster griffin trade will be the last trade that trickles out ahead of the deadline so it was
00:24actually pretty chalky in the end after the mead deal which was the stunner and that was well
00:28before the deadline the two guys that we've said all along they want to trade they're probably going
00:32to trade louise garcia foster griffin are the two guys they got deals for they made the one surprising
00:37trade i guess within the last hour and it was just a you know i say surprising because it's not
00:42something we've talked about but christian franklin is not really a part of their future plans
00:46triple a outfielder for a double a reliever striking out 15 per nine but in the end they end up
00:52adding
00:5310 players nine pitchers and one outfielder among the 10 players so they clearly had a goal and a
01:02plan of attack here i'll get to my big picture final thoughts on why i'm okay with all of this
01:08but i will say just playing devil's advocate for a moment they traded louise garcia who's leading the
01:14national league in slugging they traded foster griffin who's an all-star who's had the best season
01:20this deep into a year of any pitcher since max scherzer steven strasberg's era they traded curtis
01:27mead who broke out in a huge way and was playing like a right-handed stud and franklin who's one
01:34of
01:34their better outfielders at the triple a level and they didn't get back a particularly good prospect
01:39outside of connelly early now early's been hurt so we haven't seen him i think we'd feel differently
01:44if he pitched twice and thrown really well he's going to be in the major league rotation and he's got
01:50a
01:50chance to be a mid-rotation type starter controllable that was a no-brainer deal but otherwise it's a
01:56couple of relievers that are going to pitch against the phillies not guys with long track records
02:01though not arms that you control that have been you know all-stars or or have been dominant so the
02:08names
02:09if you're just sifting through them are going to be pretty underwhelming overall for the types of
02:14players they gave up based on the seasons they were having yeah and i think that's going to be the
02:18tough part to stomach for nationals fans is you traded away some big-time contributors for this
02:23team and you got back a couple of guys that'll help this team out but not anything that's fills
02:30anything close to the hole that was left for the guys that left this team and i think they're looking
02:35at 2027 and beyond and trying to build this thing up luckily you've still got cj abrams past the
02:41deadline which we didn't think he was getting moved but you know cj abrams is still going to be
02:45playing for this team james wood is obviously still going to be playing for this team but they
02:49didn't get any big-time prospects back and that is a tough pill to swallow but i think when paul
02:55taboni came over here he talked about a scouting and development monster we've seen them be able to
03:00develop talent better than the previous regime was down in the minor leagues now i would say 90
03:05of it has been hitting so now they add in a lot of pitchers you talked about the number of
03:10pitchers
03:10the quantity of guys they brought in hopefully it's guys that they've identified as all right
03:15we can work with this guy this is a trait we like about this guy and maybe it's not the
03:20obvious hey
03:20this guy throws 98 yeah everybody likes that guy but trying to find some different things on the
03:25margins and hopefully they're able to develop some of these guys but you go back to the mckenzie gore
03:29deal we talked about that they didn't get a top 100 prospect when they initially made the deal but
03:35now you've got multiple of those guys consistently making moves into the top 100 for whatever
03:39publication you like to look at so this is something where paul taboni they went quantity
03:44over quality now it's on him and his staff to be able to develop the guys that they brought in
03:47for
03:48the pieces that they traded away i think what i learned at this deadline was they're not as far
03:54away as taboni originally thought in his mind to get nobody back at single a you mentioned earlier in
04:02the show like maybe you'd rather have a starter at the lower levels and i think that's a good argument
04:06a really good conversation to have they didn't do that in any of these deals not one just to go
04:13through it rapid fire here so it's foster griffin luis garcia curtis mead christian franklin out
04:1710 players back including nine pitchers connell early big leagues starting pitcher jake bird reliever
04:24starting pitcher yovani cruz big leaguer relief pitcher jake bird rather relief pitcher in the big leagues
04:31yovani cruz relief pitcher in the big leagues and will deon relief pitcher in the big leagues so they
04:35may have four guys in the next week three in the bullpen one in the rotation when early comes back
04:40that are in the majors then you have two more starters in uh jack siebert double a josh hartle double
04:46a
04:46and then you have more minor league relievers ben grable i think's the best arm of all of them
04:50frankly from the yankees deal double a joe glassy orioles deal double a and uh ken deglas
04:58raguas double a right hander i'm gonna have to figure out how to say his name by the way
05:02but there's your arms so it's mlb double a double a mlb mlb mlb double a double a double a
05:10and then
05:10nick mitchell the outfielder in double a nobody at the lower levels of the minors doesn't that tell
05:15you maybe that this is about next year not like 29 yeah no 100 i think it also makes a
05:21move that
05:22they don't have to go assign as many guys as well like they feel like they've got a bunch of
05:26guys at
05:26the upper levels of the minors that can help this team out and i think too part of the reason
05:30for
05:31them and maybe this is something i didn't explore as much when we were talking about the christian
05:35franklin trade a little bit earlier but maybe a reason that they want to go quantity over
05:39quality at the relief pitching position or at least pitching position look at what they've done this
05:44season with their bullpen i don't think it was always what they wanted to do i think you if you
05:48asked them they'd rather have four or five guys they could depend on and maybe do the rochester express
05:52for two or three guys but maybe they feel like their approach to be able to make this work could
05:57be they pull the rochester express with four or five guys and so in order for that to work and
06:02you're running a pen where you're rotating through every couple of weeks you don't need just eight
06:07guys you need 10 guys 12 guys 14 guys maybe more and i think that's maybe the reason that they
06:13go
06:13this route where hey i'm not getting mason miller back but i can make this work when i've got 13
06:19or 14
06:19guys that i can rotate through and when they get a little worn down we send them back to rochester
06:23or i need this lefty for this series or whatever it may be they're probably going to rotate through
06:27a bunch of these guys as the years go on charlie and dave pregame coming up in just a couple
06:33of
06:33minutes derris let me know when the hard out is so i make sure i hit that for vic and
06:37company
06:38uh before we say goodbye here but putting a bow on our trade deadline conversation
06:43um i'm gonna give the mead deal an a yeah that's an a for me i'm gonna give the luis
06:52garcia deal an a
06:54and i'll give the foster griffin i'll give the christian franklin deal an a and i'm gonna give
07:00the foster griffin deal a c uh maybe like a c minus only because i need to know if the
07:06qualifying offer
07:06was on the table i don't have a problem with the return i think people didn't properly understand
07:11a rental the way as many starters that were available we said this earlier in the day you
07:15just weren't going to get a whole lot and when you get four players back which was i guess for
07:19their goal you're just not going to get a good player back yeah i think i would go a for
07:23the mead
07:23deal louise probably a b i didn't wasn't a huge fan of the franklin deal but getting back a pitcher
07:29back in the other deal it makes a little bit sense i'll go with c on that one i'll probably
07:32go
07:33honestly i need to know the qualifying offer a bit but i'll go d on foster griffin i would have
07:37liked a
07:37lot more yeah just a higher quality prospect so you would have rather traded or i'd rather hold
07:43on to him you would have rather traded for like one player and gotten a better player yeah probably
07:47so philosophically and we'll talk more about this i mean they're just quantity over quality
07:52sounds like you were more quality over quantity there your trade deadline special on grant and
07:57danny nats baseball coming your way next charlie slows dave jagler right here on the fan
