JP and BMitch react to Washington's big trade over the weekend. Does this mean the Nationals are buying or selling at the deadline?
Transcript
00:00and that's take two out of three bats continue red hot and then we get the first trade right
00:07um curtis meade who i have really liked watching curtis meade i've got to talk to him a few
00:13different times a dude that just hits bombs and has a cool australian accent always going to be
00:19a fan favorite like that's just kind of how that's going to go you know what i mean and
00:24now they traded curtis they traded for curtis meade this offseason for a prospect that is
00:31hitting really well but it's at low a or high a you probably can't take too much from that right
00:37and then they're able to trade curtis meade to the red sox for a true stud pitching prospect in this
00:44lefty connelly early um i was listening to part of my take this morning and they were saying his
00:52name's kind of annoying wouldn't that wouldn't connor early be a better name than connelly early
00:56who the kid's name is connelly early the picture they got his name is what his parents named him
01:03dog sure now here's the issue for the the good news with early is he's under he's under control
01:12for like five years yeah under control till 30 or 31 right stallion like this is a young fireball
01:18left-hander that is budget-friendly and supposed to be a stud paul taboni apparently loves this dude
01:24paul taboni talked about him in his introductory press conference so he's able to get something
01:30that could have a ton of value down the line but meade was hitting homers now yeah connelly early
01:40is expected to make his first rehab start in the minors on august 3rd so like this dude's still on
01:47the
01:47il so this for the people that want them to help this team right now maybe that's a late august
01:55he's
01:55pitching again i would guess but this is a long-term play not a short-term play it's a long
02:00-term play he
02:01may be able to help them late august but like you just stated five years of control and the more
02:06i get
02:07deeper into baseball that's all they care about control they want to be able to have you as long
02:11as they possibly can and if they can get you while you're balling out it works out for them
02:19does this make you think to me it's hard to think
02:26they're not going to trade at least foster griffin like if you just acquired a guy that's supposed to
02:30be a stud i mean we're talking ace stuff right stallion and this is a top of line rotation guy
02:36yeah i think probably like a number three probably ideally down the road but i mean he's a really
02:41good pitcher on this team probably your number two number three guy but what if they're thinking this
02:46well he's he's gonna be coming along we possibly keep foster around we know he could be a good one
02:55bring somebody else in by the time you start hitting like a playoff push or everything's working for
03:04you i i stan you explain this to me how this is buying and selling at the same time because
03:12to me
03:13it's selling which i'm cool with i mean well this doesn't help you right now in the wild card chase
03:19well i mean it helps you in a few weeks from now when connelly early is expected to be back
03:23and i think we think and i mean he's scheduled to make a rehab appearance here relatively soon in the
03:28next week i think connelly early helps his team like now like he's gonna be in the rotation probably
03:33august 25th just as a guess here like he's gonna be here pretty soon within a month and this is
03:39someone who's already pretty established he's pitched in a postseason game before against new
03:43york yankees in the wild card round and looked okay for the most part against them but this is
03:49someone that you're getting rid of curtis mead who you already have the best power team in baseball
03:54right now bar none and curtis mead has helped with that but also it's because of james wood
03:58and cj abrams so you're adding a strength now with uh left hand and you need it and you need
04:05it with
04:05pitching that's our biggest need and so you get someone that can help you this season and you're
04:10offloading one of your right-handed power bats that's gonna suck but still i think that this helps
04:15his team win right now assuming the elbow's good and he comes back which i would say is kind of
04:22an
04:22assumption but you can make that argument that this is buying and selling if you don't trade
04:30away foster griffin because if you acquired this kid and all of a sudden you boosted your rotation
04:36hell yeah like if late august he's starting and then all of a sudden the rotation is that much better
04:43and you're bumping out one of these dudes at the bottom that hasn't given you much
04:47totally but if you make this move and trade griffin you're selling
04:55somewhat like he helps now assuming he stays griffin stays yeah yeah i see what you're saying
05:04if you let griffin go then you didn't really strengthen it you kept it the same or you may
05:08have dropped off unless you think this kid is better than griffin i think the prospect type i mean
05:15griffin's about to be 31 was pitching in japan the last couple years this kid is a stud prospect
05:21but i i think for the long-term health of the organization this is a great move absolutely i just
05:28think right now if you're going to move griffin you're selling and i've been advocating for that
05:37it's tough to say that now that they just took two out of three against the d-backs they're a
05:42game
05:42out of the last wild card spot like i just they're they're in a they're in this is one of
05:49the most
05:49interesting tricky situations i've ever seen this nats team because we had nats get to town and
05:56they're largely bad then they really start spending money they really hit the lottery with a couple
06:02draft picks and all of a sudden they're good for a while and then they've just been bad again like
06:06there hasn't been a lot of oh my gosh should they buy or sell you know there was the oh
06:11my god are they
06:11actually going to trade away juan soto kind of conversation but it all to me circles back to
06:16cash i want to i'll blow up the phones 800-636-1067 spencer's in dc spencer what do you think
06:23of the
06:23mead trade guys i think you're being a bit short-sighted here we gave up we got curtis
06:29mead from the white socks for essentially nothing we gave up boston smith dude's playing double a right
06:35now in chicago we're bottom four in era early i know he's on the aisle right now but he's going
06:40to
06:40come back soon so i think caboni deserves a lot more credit brady house he's back up on the team
06:45i like the trade i just i don't know that i buy the they're buying and selling if they don't
06:52trade
06:52griffin then i'm with you but if they if you trade away griffin and this dude's coming back late august
06:58like have you helped your rotation or is that kind of even out at least for this year
07:04well i agree with you completely if we give up griffin then i mean it was a useless trade so
07:10you know you have to do other trades to continue to build momentum and show that we're truly buying
07:16i appreciate the call spence i i wouldn't call it useless like to boney's job is to build a real
07:21championship contender over time if he thinks he can get early right now at this price point and he
07:26helps them in 28 and 29 and beyond i think i just if they're going to trade griffin then
07:33we can't say we're building now also because you need both of them if you're trying to make the
07:40postseason like you're trying to add your starting pitching depth i love it but you got to be in for
07:45this year and to me it's all circles back to cash i people are like let's get an extension done
07:50for foster griffin if you're foster griffin and this is your last crack at probably a massive contract
07:56i think i'm going to free agency dog unless they come to you with something lucrative right now
