WWL Radio's Bobby Hebert, Mike Hoss and Mike Detillier break down their takeaways after the Saints' first padded practice of training camp on Monday, Aug. 3.
Transcript
00:04Mike Haas, along with the Cajun Cannon and Mike Dettelier, first day in pads.
00:10This is the next real step to football, which is what Kellen talks about.
00:15For the Cajun Cannon, what were you looking at?
00:17What did you want to see first day in pads?
00:19Well, you want it to be 50-50.
00:22You don't want the defense winning all the time or the offense,
00:24but I still think the defense had an edge.
00:29I mean, whether you have pads or no pads, I don't think they can block Chase Young.
00:32I'm not sure anybody can do that.
00:35So maybe, you know, you need help.
00:39With the pads, I'd like to see us run the ball better.
00:43But then I'd take them running back to the ground.
00:45But when you see them getting hit behind the line of scrimmage, you're only after one yard.
00:49Now you can, in theory, break a tackle and be more productive.
00:53So the offensive line has to get better overall run blocking.
00:56And it's a true judgment, as far as with pads, to look at the run game.
01:00Now, ultimately, like, you know, Coach Moore said, we're going to have drills.
01:04They might take the running back to the ground, but you're going to see preseason games.
01:08There will be a lot of opportunities for a lot of running backs.
01:10So that's truly, you can see if your running game is getting better, you know,
01:14and you're averaging 4.2 yards a carry and not 3.2.
01:17You know, just simple stuff is that I thought one of the plays of the day, again,
01:23big plus for the defense, not too much for the offense.
01:27That was like best going against the best.
01:29And I thought Quincy Riley ate up Chris Olavi on the deep ball.
01:34And Shug was commenting to getting the ball out there, but there wasn't no place to throw it.
01:38Quincy Riley, big plus, great for the cornerback, great for the defense.
01:43But I was just thinking, okay, if that's Jamar Chase or Justin Jefferson with the Seahawks,
01:52JSN, I go, I think they might get some separation.
01:58Now, not every time, but so that was a little good for Quincy Riley,
02:02but I still think the offense has a ways to go.
02:05Again, good for our defense.
02:07And I was thinking about this.
02:09In theory, when you're coaching a team and you're the head coach, you want to be 50-50.
02:15It's not always going to be 50-50.
02:16Like Drew Brees versus Jonathan Villeman.
02:18They're talking smack, who's going to win one day.
02:21Well, right now, I'd say overall, all the practice of the defense has been winning.
02:26So you want the offense to turn the corner.
02:28So there's some sense of balance.
02:30And great for our defense, but I don't think we're the Houston Texans defense.
02:33I mean, I think we're very good.
02:35So when I look at it, a good day to see the first day in pads is going to be
02:40a good week
02:41because you're going to have Thursday.
02:42You're going to have Saturday, Sunday.
02:44And then plus, when you go in pads, even though you're training and all that
02:48and you're hitting one another with our pads, you tend to wake up tomorrow morning
02:52a different soreness.
02:54It's a different soreness.
02:55And then all of a sudden, you know what's going to be key?
02:58Then you're thinking, now they throw them a bone.
03:00It's not three straight days in pads.
03:01You're not in pads tomorrow, but then you're in pads on Wednesday.
03:08Then you're in pads on Thursday.
03:10That third day, that's when you start feeling a little older than maybe you really are.
03:17Kind of the same area, but this is that time, pads, first day, O-line, D-line, one-on-one.
03:24And you're watching that.
03:25Kellen Moore's about 10 yards away.
03:26He's watching that trench battle because now you're really getting to the evaluation
03:31of how these O-line and D-line are doing.
03:34Yeah, no question about it.
03:36That was a lot of penetration in the middle, too.
03:38And I just saw the edge with Chase.
03:40Chase, in all the practices I've seen, Chase has almost been unblockable.
03:44When he wants to make a play, he's making it.
03:46But I thought today was the best day of passing for Tyler Shook.
03:53When we started this Wednesday, it was the best day for him.
03:57The play of the day, though, was really Spencer Rattler to Barry and Brown on the deep pass.
04:03They hit him and, man, Barry and again, he's had trouble returning putts, seeing it in the sky.
04:10But, man, as a receiver, he's really made great strides.
04:14That's the Barry and Brown I saw at University of Kentucky.
04:16But I agree with Bob.
04:18Again, this is another day where if you're saying, who has the advantage, pads and no pads, defense won again.
04:26And quite frankly, it should have been two Barry and Brown.
04:29Spencer Rattler to Barry and Brown.
04:30He dropped a deep ball on the corner, deep corner, all the way across the field.
04:34I think he turned the wrong way.
04:35He made the harder catch.
04:37And didn't make it easier.
04:38And you're talking about a positive sign.
04:41And you might say, well, that's not a highlight.
04:43I thought it was a highlight.
04:44And it was the ball placement by Tyler Shuck and Jordan Tyson.
04:49Sliding to the ground.
04:50Yeah, sliding to the ground.
04:51It had been about a 15, 16-yard gain.
04:54It's either we're going to catch it or nobody's going to catch it.
04:56That, to me, now you've got to do that a handful of times, a bunch of times.
05:00But that's a good positive play.
05:02You might say, well, he threw it low.
05:03I think he meant to throw it that way because of the coverage.
05:06You can see Jordan slide.
05:07Yeah, so that's a good sign that they click and are on the same page.
05:13And like I said, you just need to do that more often.
05:16But that was a very positive play.
05:17The other thing, too, is the fact that I thought they were trying to pump the ball more to the
05:22receivers today
05:23than to the tight ends, which we've seen in the past.
05:26Lots more coming your way on Sports Talk.
05:28Again, on the website, www.amfm.com.
05:30And always free, of course, on the Odyssey app.
05:33Who dat?
05:34Who dat?
05:37Who dat?
05:38Who dat?
05:38And we still know.
05:38By the last time we've drawn a board.
05:38How do I play?
05:38How do we play through theüstness?
05:38How are we 59 big?
