00:00you have any Patriots thoughts from camp this week yeah I did have some Patriots thoughts if
00:04you want to do that before you get back to the callers yeah so I I feel like the Patriots have
00:10sort of an interesting I don't want to call it a dilemma a choice to make based on what's happening
00:14along the offensive line who do they feel like they need to protect more Drake May or Will Campbell
00:21because when you look at what what is happening with the offensive line and Jared Wilson and the
00:26what I've read and also the couple of practices I've been at he's clearly one of their five
00:30best offensive linemen it seems like he's kind of locked in now at left guard but that would mean
00:35that the left side of the line it would be all rookies and that Will Campbell who's had a little
00:40bit of a tough time of it so far in training camp when he's out there when the season starts he's
00:44not going to have a veteran guy to help him or lean on it's going to be a fellow rookie two rookies on
00:49the left side so do you do that and that means Will Campbell doesn't have the benefit of a veteran
00:54maybe to help him a little bit when I say help him I don't mean make blocks for him but just
00:59understand what the protections are you know explain to him maybe what a team's trying to do
01:04just having that veteran voice or or the other option is if Wilson is the center now here's Drake
01:12May in year one in the McDaniels system with a lot of responsibility for the checks at the line and
01:17setting the protections and he's doing it with a rookie center who's never been in this system and
01:23never been a center in the NFL having any sort of responsibility for telling the quarterback what
01:28he sees and and being somebody the quarterback can check with before they make the protection
01:33scheme selection so which one of those things is most beneficial for the team which one of those
01:39things do they feel like they they need the most and so far at least it seems like they've made the
01:45choice that okay well Will Campbell will figure it out even with another rookie next to him we want to
01:50make sure that Drake May has a center who's played center in the NFL before and someone he can whether
01:56it's Ben Brown I know Garrett Bradbury's hurt Cole Strange we want someone who at least has played NFL
02:01games to help Drake May out a little bit with setting these protections does it feel like you
02:06across the board they haven't done enough up front it doesn't seem all that different from last year
02:12outside of Wilson I mean it really doesn't Morgan Moses I don't want to panic on that failure I know
02:18you remember this do you remember how bad Matt Castle was in a training camp in 2008 do you remember
02:24that of course yeah yeah I mean he was and then obviously the injury happened he was so sometimes
02:29with veteran guys like the training camp can be a little overblown so I don't want to panic on
02:33Morgan Moses I think ultimately he's going to be an upgrade there but the overall depth of the
02:39offensive line is not you know what what you would hope it would be and and this is the danger of
02:45relying on rookies and this is where I look at it and say a lot has to go right for some of these
02:51predictions of 10-11 wins and I know that's not yours you've you've you've educated me on that
02:57Felgi you're not a 10-11 win guy but there are other can I just say I pulled up to Gillette Stadium
03:02the other day and spoke to someone they're not in football ops but it's someone I always speak to over
03:07there who I love very dearly and I told them what my prediction for the season was and I said seven wins
03:13and they said that's the lowest I've heard and said 11 oh my god so no no I mean it's not it wasn't
03:22like that but I'm just saying the optimism around the team is very high so the per I'm relying on
03:28the coaching to get more out of the offensive line uh but the personnel itself is especially if
03:34if I I think Will Campbell's going to struggle as a rookie and so I know he's got ceiling there
03:40and potential there but right out of the shoot I don't know how much better it is really going to
03:44be than last year maybe just on the margin so up the offensive line is gonna be the thing holding
03:49them back how about the stuff it's shaking out at receiver what do you see in there yeah it's
03:55interesting when you look at I I do think they're better than last year I still question whether they
04:00have a true number one somebody who can dictate coverage digs is certainly a good player at this stage
04:07of his career and we had this discussion you and I did Felge on BST the other night you know Terry
04:13McLaurin or Stefan Diggs at this stage of their careers I I would prefer Terry McLaurin because I
04:17think he is a legitimate one Diggs now has a stretch of more than 20 straight games without a 100 yard
04:23receiving game that last year in Buffalo he wasn't as effective and then he was effective last year in
04:29Houston and got hurt but still no 100 yard receiving game so the overall depth is better when you look at the
04:36receiving core it's gonna have to be elevated by two guys one is Josh McDaniels employing these guys
04:43correctly and doing what he always does which is creating matchups like I go back and think about
04:47I think it was 2016 it might have been or maybe it's 24 there was a year that basically in the
04:53beginning of the year they were really struggling at wide receiver and it was Josh that was allowing
04:58them to get by he created a mismatch like for Chris Hogan against the Jaguars and it was all the play
05:04call that like got him open so Josh can do some of that stuff and then Drake May you know this is
05:09what you hope for when you draft a quarterback in the top five is that he's good enough to elevate
05:13the talent around him and I have seen some of that in training camp some of the off-platform stuff
05:18he had a deep in cut throw to Pop Douglas on Monday that I really really liked and and you know not to
05:25bring out the old Mike Mayock elite arm talent but Drake May does have elite arm talent and no question
05:30about that that that's why I was so high on him that's why you take him in the top five so
05:35ultimately it's going to be incumbent upon those two guys Josh McDaniels and Drake May to get the
05:40most out of this wide receiving core and that sort of moves me to something else I want to talk about
05:44guys which is where do you guys think Drake May is at in this offense in terms of comfortability
05:50because that's something that I've had my eye on since the offseason and he had a couple of quotes
05:54earlier this week that to me you sort of said he's still feeling his way through it you're saying
06:00that's what I think there yeah you're saying that with a snicker and almost a smile so is that because
06:05it supports what he believes yeah so are you saying like it's the old square peg round hole type thing
06:10like no no no I'm not actively rooting against Drake May like you Murray no no no no no no no I'm just
06:18not accusing you of that I'm just saying from what you're seeing are you are is it like two plus two is
06:23five like he's no no but I think some of the things this offense asked the quarterback to do
06:30can be challenging to learn and when he's and I give May credit for this when he's asked these
06:35questions I think he answers them honestly so he was asked about the offense this week he said
06:39I think I'm I'm I think I'm trying to come from this offense kind of take the next steps as we go
06:45he was asked about setting the protections I think it's starting to come along he's he's not a guy
06:51that's going to give you like false bravado confidence like if he's not fully confident
06:55and comfortable in it and I don't think he's fully confident or comfortable in it doesn't
06:59mean he won't get there but I don't think that that's where he's at at this point and that's
07:04something so many times he's spoken about this this offense since the offseason and it has been a lot
07:12of this kind of you know I'm making progress I like where I'm at it's going to take a while to
07:17master it I like where we are it's not oh I have it down or yeah yeah yeah you know I'm really
07:23comfortable and confident in that so I just want to see how Josh tweaks this thing how Josh brings
07:28them along and it goes back to the conversations we've had where I need to make sure Josh is if I'm
07:34the Patriots and Mike Frabel I need to make sure Josh is molding this offense to Drake May and not the
07:40other way around so one to ten is he at like three I don't think he's at three I would say
07:46one to ten my guess from what I've seen he's at six oh way too high Murray thoughts it's just it's
07:53a little concerning that's all I mean how how far back is Josh gonna have to dial it back right now
07:59if he's struggling at camp like this see this is a football it's traditionally made of brown leather
08:03you got that Drake I mean is are we there is this you know it's concerning what Chris is saying
08:08ask him whether there's air in it or feathers
08:11hey look jury's out on him that's all I'm saying you know I get accused of saying you know people
08:17say like Chris said I don't like him I just I got questions is all that's all and fitting in I just
08:22know you're not someone who sits on the fence Murray you either like something or you hate it
08:27especially the older you've gotten oh so it's just odd that on this one particular guy you're just
08:32kind of like well you know I'm I'm apathetic about this particular person because you don't really do
08:38you well you do do apathy but you don't really do apathy in terms of emotions towards people
08:42well he's you know I mean he was surrounded with such crap last year that I don't think it's fair
08:47one way or the other for me to say like this guy stinks you know like Trey Lance
08:51that's all Murray yeah that's all I got again I got questions about Drake May that's all I'm being
09:00fair I think it's okay to be fair
09:02you
