00:03All right, day three of Saints training camp in the books.
00:07Jeff Nowak alongside Deuce McAllister, another hot day.
00:11Got a little bit of a reprieve, didn't seem too bad.
00:13A little slow start for the offense.
00:14What have you seen over the first three days?
00:16Yeah, I think when you talk about just a slow start,
00:18just them getting back in the rhythm,
00:20just making sure that they're on the same page.
00:22One of the toughest things is always going to be is always installs,
00:25and when you have installs, guys have to understand
00:27and they have to know what they're doing.
00:28I mean, you just heard Jordan talk about it a little bit.
00:31You can't at-live on certain plays.
00:33Certain plays, when you have pressure, you've got to stick to the playbook
00:36because I've got to have the trust,
00:38and the quarterback has to trust me to know what I'm doing.
00:40And I'm not just talking about him, but there's a play, maybe a running back.
00:44He sees the pressure.
00:45He doesn't go immediately.
00:47Now that gap closes, and it's a sack for the quarterback.
00:50And so I think the defense has done a really good job of playing fast,
00:54kind of understanding and knowing what they're doing.
00:56Offensively, they're still filling their way through.
00:58Hopefully that kind of changes where both of them, you know, you have,
01:02hey, offense won this period, defense won that period.
01:04You know, not consecutive days of, yep, defense, defense, or offense, offense.
01:09Yeah, you're referring to Jordan Tyson.
01:11He's been out here all three days, which is really cool to see.
01:13He's a slow ramp-up process.
01:14He was referring to the interception from yesterday.
01:17He kind of tried to cut back in, but, you know, Tyler was going outside.
01:20But, you know, how, I mean, just the time on task with a young player and the reps,
01:25like how important is that for him and Tyler to get on the same page at this stage?
01:29Well, you got to remember, you know, he was limited as far as OTAs were concerned.
01:34And so, for him, this is really his full extended period out there in time.
01:39And then the other part of it is it's new installs.
01:41So, everything is not new, but some of those stuff, you know, he's familiar with.
01:45But now it's a little bit faster.
01:47It's a little quicker.
01:48You know, we can say that, hey, the speed of it is the same in OTAs.
01:51No, it's not.
01:52It's going to even speed up, you know, when you go to the preseason games,
01:55to the regular season games.
01:56I mean, but it's important for those guys to get that time on task,
01:59like you talked about, not only against defense, but, you know,
02:02just to be able to do some stuff after practice as well.
02:05Yeah, and, you know, the running back position has kind of been fascinating to watch.
02:09You see Alvin Kamara for the first time in a long time getting reps with the twos,
02:12and I think that kind of split up is interesting.
02:15Like, how do you get guys reps?
02:16What have you seen from that position?
02:17And especially in these early practices, there's a lot fewer to go around.
02:21But how do you feel about that group as a whole?
02:23Yeah, I think when you talk about him getting plays with the twos,
02:25it's maybe, hey, you know, there's a certain run I want you to get.
02:28You know, A-Chain got it with the first group.
02:31I still want you to get it.
02:32We're not going to do it again with the first group,
02:34but I want you to get this rep.
02:35And so a lot of times it may be I want to see it on film.
02:38And so that may be the only time that you get to see it.
02:41And so, you know, I think from the running game's perspective,
02:43they've had some big runs.
02:45We didn't see a lot of that last year.
02:46And so even, you know, without the pads, you see it.
02:51It's happening where guys are getting to that second level,
02:53and then, you know, it's on those players to be able to make some,
02:55some guys missing.
02:56So I'm encouraged by it.
02:58You know, there's still a lot that has to happen once they do get pads on.
03:02You know, the first couple of days, we'll kind of see how it looks then
03:04and, you know, how they can continue to improve.
03:07Yeah, and we chatted with Pete Werner today.
03:08You can hear that on WWL Sports Talk later this afternoon.
03:12But, you know, Pete Werner and Caden Ellis,
03:14that kind of pairing that we've seen before, you know,
03:17it's not a new pairing, but it's kind of a reset.
03:20What have you seen from those two so far?
03:22And what do you think is important for that group to really kind of establish
03:25during camp as we head toward, you know, the post-Demario Davis era?
03:29Well, you want leaders, you want leaders to make plays.
03:31And that's one of the things that they've been able to do is make plays, you know.
03:34And now can you be wreak havoc enough where you can cause turnovers?
03:38And so you know that they're going to know what to do.
03:41That's not going to be a question.
03:42Now can you go out there and make a play or two?
03:44And then I can encourage guys to tell them, you've got to go make a play.
03:49You know, if I am going to be the leader, then I have to be accountable for myself.
03:53I have to go out there and make plays.
03:55But then it's hard for me to ask guys to go and make plays if I'm not doing it myself.
03:59So they've been able to do it.
04:00You saw Pete come up with the sack today.
04:02Caden has been very vocal.
04:04Saw him out there after practice getting some work in, doing some things.
04:07So, you know, you're encouraged by what they've done so far.
04:10But for them, they just have to continue to show up.
04:12Okay, and last question, you know, Chris Alave, contact extension in the books.
04:16How important do you think it was for this team and for Chris to just get that done early,
04:20you know, and so you can just kind of move forward, build the offense naturally?
04:24Has to be a perfect world for both sides.
04:27You know, neither kind of won the, it's not a battle, but neither kind of won.
04:32Chris was able to get, you know, what he was looking for as far as an extension.
04:36The team probably got some of the protection that they were looking for.
04:39And so, you know, you just try to make it work for both sides.
04:43And then, you know, I think for both of them, it's kind of a reward as well.
04:46I mean, for Chris, it shows that you've done a good job.
04:48We're proud.
04:49We're pleased.
04:50We want you to continue on the path or even, you know, continue to increase it.
04:54And then, you know, from his perspective, I deserve this.
04:59You know, I want more.
05:00I want to show you that I can do more.
05:02And so, you know, that's hopefully where this ends up going.
05:04And, you know, it's a really good deal.
05:06All right.
05:07Three days of training camp in the books.
