00:29glorious joyous days of the year let's go boys so we had joe batonio on yesterday and he said you
00:36know he didn't really have any fomo until like this last week and it kind of it was like a
00:41real thing
00:43that you know hey i'm not reporting to camp did you have that as well did it take a couple
00:48years to
00:49kind of like normalize the idea you weren't going to camp or were you so done that you were just
00:53you there was no fomo uh i'm not sure i ever had fomo about training camp uh not the most
01:01glorious
01:01time of the year as a player on summer vacation's over and it's time to strap the pads on for
01:06a couple three hour practices every day um but towards the end of my career i didn't really practice
01:12much uh especially in training camp so the thing i missed the most was those delicious meals that we
01:18used to get from our nutritionists and the nice smoothies and uh i missed that probably the most
01:24but i was i was certainly ready to be done and never really felt that uh fomo what i did
01:31feel was
01:31like a little bit of relief when um training camp would come up and i'd see all my buddies like
01:36when
01:36joel was still playing and i know like ah i got another week i i can just wait and relax
01:43because
01:44you know after i retired would always visit training camp kind of around that the hall of fame
01:48festivities just like i am this year and get a chance to go as a an observer with flip-flops
01:53and
01:54sunglasses on which uh i think that's the right way to enjoy training camp yeah definitely seems like
01:59the right way all right well so i don't know if you what you've seen out of today's training camp
02:03deshaun had a couple interceptions chador looked solid is the term that everyone's using today
02:07uh what can we realistically take away on a day-in day-out basis out of this quarterback battle
02:15well i think what you take away is it's just a long race right um whatever happens in day one
02:22it counts but it's not everything it's not like you're going to have one moment in in one training
02:27camp where it's like oh yep yep he's the starter he's not the starter because how to earn the starting
02:32spot in cleveland is proving to the coaching staff proving to your teammates that you're trustworthy
02:36that you can run the offense officially uh that you can see the field the same way your offensive
02:42coordinator does and your man to lead the job and you can do it with the fewest amount of mistakes
02:48and
02:49you can show that growth throughout training camp so while the first day is important of course what
02:54they're going to want to see each and every day is that growth that building of trust and
02:58communication with your receivers with your quarterbacks coach with your offensive coordinator
03:03and that mastery of the offense where uh offensive coordinator as they're evaluating that position
03:08head coach evaluating that position they want to be able to extrapolate what they're seeing day in
03:12and day out see how that progress is moving and try to predict what's the offense going to look like
03:18as we try to build this thing around one player or the other to start the season so it's interesting
03:24you might have just given us the the path there but you know todd monkey today says you know the
03:29players
03:30pick the quarterback i don't pick the quarterback now that's mostly true i do think players always
03:36know who should start sometimes the head coach pivots but so if we're just looking from the player
03:42perspective how does one of these quarterbacks win over their teammates so at the end of this
03:47if they're named the starting quarterback all a majority of those guys think we got the right guy
03:53and we can head into battle you know if there's one thing that you want to look for as a
03:58fan when
03:58you're out at those training camp practices it's all right let's say maybe there's a miscommunication
04:04on a pass and the ball hits the dirt and the receiver's running back to the huddle i want to
04:10see that receiver saying that's my fault i'll be better next time no matter what happened no matter
04:15if it was the quarterback's fault if it was somebody on defense's fault if it was a different
04:19receiver's fault you want to see those quarterback or those receivers taking ownership and building
04:24trust and showing that hey this quarterback he's my guy i got his back no matter what i'm taking the
04:30bullets for him it was the same thing for me as a left tackle right no matter what happened to
04:35the
04:35quarterback he was in the wrong spot he called the wrong play he was on the wrong cadence he pointed
04:39the mic the wrong way it was our job to protect him at all costs and that extends beyond the
04:46play
04:46beyond the whistle to what happens after that to build that trust so i think really that's probably
04:51what coach munkin was leaning into a little bit was he wants to see those receivers those ball
04:57catchers those linemen up front taking bullets for somebody willing to stand up there stick their neck
05:03out even though everybody in the film room knows whose fault it was and saying that's on me i'll be
05:08better because that's really how you're in that trust of your quarterback and that's the thing that
05:12tells you as a coach hey who is the guy that shouldn't be the starter who's the guy that's earned
05:18the
05:18trust of his teammates well so as we're going out there we'll be out there friday in a lot of
05:22days
05:22obviously in the weeks that follow then uh if we're trying to not make too much out of the preseason
05:27games where munkin did say by the way he's going to have the plan right now is to have some
05:31of the
05:31starters play what should we be paying attention to in particular that we can actually take away and
05:37actually look at within this quarterback battle or is the preseason game something we should still
05:41hold near and dear well i don't think they're as competitive and they certainly don't show as much
05:47and play as many players as they used to um you know 2007 my rookie season we were playing three
05:52quarters in the third game even the fourth game when they had four games we played the first quarter
05:57and it was much more of a dress rehearsal back then but i still think as a rookie coach he's
06:02going to
06:03want to put a little bit more out there because he hasn't put this team together he hasn't coached this
06:07team before um and it's really their first opportunity with referees in a stadium to go through
06:12the motions and the regular routine of a game and so i think when you are a young head or
06:19a first time
06:19head coach in this situation like coach munkin you're going to actually do a little bit more
06:24you're going to probably play your guys a little bit more because you've got more opportunity to get
06:30better because you have so much to get finished and accomplished during training camp versus a coach
06:36who's been around a long time who feels like hey we don't have as much to get done in these
06:41preseason games so keeping our players safe keeping them healthy is a little bit more important
06:47where the browns right now they're trying to build they're trying to figure out who's a dog who's on
06:51this team who can we count on who can we trust and so they have to push the envelope a
06:56little bit more
06:56than most teams and they have to play guys a little bit more i think even some of their better
07:01players
07:02joe when we had joel on yesterday i asked him this question so i'm curious if your answer is going
07:06to be
07:07the same but you've got a unique vantage point on having a new head coach because you had a few
07:12of
07:12them in your time here in cleveland what what's like the through line of the guys who got it right
07:18the coaches that you thought gave you a chance to win who what's like the through line of what those
07:24guys did as opposed to the guys who maybe you felt like uh didn't give you that best chance to
07:30win
07:32well you know we always love kyle shannon right i mean we talk singing his praises still to this day
07:38i'm sure joel probably said some version of the same thing but it's really those guys that the same
07:43thing with receiver quarterback right they take the bullets for you right it's always on them
07:47um and in those meetings they make you think you're better than you are and they help you realize that
07:53the sum of the whole is better than the individual parts and i think kyle did a great job of
08:00that by
08:00showing you on film from practice tape and then showing you on the game tape how he's putting
08:06you in position to have an advantage over your opponent and as a professional athlete whose
08:11first job is i need to live up to this contract that i have i need to make sure i'm
08:16making this
08:17team being the best version of myself so i can put that on my family's table and then so i
08:22can be a
08:23great teammate so we can try to win what they need to do to get the most out of a
08:28player as a coach
08:29is to make them believe that they are put in the best position to succeed to get the next contract
08:35to be a great teammate because when you have that feeling it unlocks that potential and you're running
08:40through a wall for a coach like that i think a lot of times when you have effort issues on
08:45a team from
08:45a player standpoint it's a lot of they don't feel like they're being put in the best position to
08:51succeed and so a little bit of that human nature creatures creeps into your mind about well if we really
08:56don't have a chance to win and this coach is not putting me in a great position to succeed and
09:00show
09:00off my talents and to be able to mesh with my teammates that human nature creeps in and that
09:05effort just gets dialed down just a little bit and you're not seeing everything that those guys have
09:11but that's why if you watch kyle's teams when he was coaching in here uh in atlanta as the offensive
09:17coordinator and then obviously in san francisco those teams play hard all the time and you don't see
09:22kyle running up down the sidelines screaming he's not a yeller he's not a screamer he motivates you
09:26by showing you that he is giving you an advantage schematically from a technique standpoint and he's
09:32putting you in a great position the best position you'll ever have as a player for great success and
09:37that's how you unlock players potential in my opinion joe i think the browns were pretty strategic
09:42in the past 24 hours or so you know they announced the denzel ward extension they announced uh the grant
09:47delpit extension now they're in the jadevion clowny business he's on a visit and coming off in off
09:53season where you trade miles garrett and and basically signal to the fan base hey maybe we
09:57won't win that many games this upcoming year to make those three different moves and and again we
10:03don't know what will happen with clowny but you at least had him in for a visit to do that
10:06all on the
10:07day that you start off training camp what does that do for a player and maybe the front office signaling
10:12like hey we're trying to win a lot of games here this year yeah i think the browns have learned
10:18over the years that all right you've got you've got a head coach right this is his first year first
10:22games he wants to start his tenure on the right foot and even though they realize the quarterback
10:28position is unsteady it's unsettled we obviously have the extra draft picks next year so all the signs
10:35are pointing to hey they feel like this is a good year to build a foundation and the winning is
10:40hopefully
10:40going to come in next year following year and things like that but they also understand like
10:44hey if we want to develop this team the best we possibly can and give coach munkin the best
10:49opportunity for success we can't handicap him and we got to still give him the most resources possible
10:55that are available right now um to make a competitive team to be able to motivate his team
11:01to be in those close games because that's how you get the most out of competitors that's how you grow
11:06as a team that's how you come together um that's how you start having belief in a coach right even
11:12though they're not going to be favorites in a lot of games this year like to be close in those
11:17moments
11:17and give coach munkin an opportunity to show us coaching chops and to be able to find those little
11:23edges in his players to get wins in those situations like that's how you build the momentum
11:28for next year for the following year and he's i guarantee you is banging the table in that office
11:35with uh andrew berry the front office and saying hey i need this guy or this guy because i need
11:40to
11:40preach to this team that even though everybody else on the outside thinks we have no chance
11:44we have a great chance watch this watch that player look at the moves we're making we're giving you guys
11:49a great opportunity to shock the world don't waste this opportunity joe uh my partner and i have had a
11:56little bit of a disagreement here uh last year i had told the world the browns over under was set
12:03at
12:03five and a half i said choose the under i just didn't see it with that team they were just
12:08they
12:08had too many holes too much growing to do they were still kind of in transition this year i am
12:15saying
12:16take the over they're over under still five and a half i think this is a seven or eight win
12:20team
12:21and my partner says i'm not really i'm not really building anybody up by being like you take the over
12:27at seven wins he's criticizing me let's buy tickets i don't know you agree that me saying
12:32seven or eight wins when am i being bold enough on this bold enough i don't know i think that's
12:39probably a pretty good pick because i definitely think they are going to be better than they were
12:43last year obviously quarterback position is going to dictate a lot of it and the progress we see in
12:48training camp um but i definitely see that this is a team that will be more competitive overall
12:53they'll be a lot better on offense and i think at the very least and maybe this is just me
12:59as the
12:59hopeful eternal optimist as a browns fan i'm just still hoping that it's going to be more fun than it
13:06was last year you're going to have more close games and you're going to give these guys on offense an
13:10opportunity to go win some games down the stretch we're obviously a lot more talented at the receiver
13:15position at the skill positions on the outside to be able to make those plays to unlock some of the
13:20potential that we feel like she do or sanders has and hoping that deshaun watson's able to give
13:25some type of a comeback and become a little bit of the player that we hoped he was going to
13:30be when
13:30he was signed here and so yeah i mean the optimist in me is saying hey let's get seven eight
13:35wins i
13:36mean yeah it's hard to sell that to most fan bases like all your tickets we're gonna be five
13:40let the man speak listen listen to what you're saying we're feeling like we can get there let the man
13:44let this man cook he said a firm seven seven seven and ten oh everyone get excited buy your
13:52tickets no one's giving you a chance to do a damn thing seven and ten no one's giving you
13:57congratulations you picked a half game better than what vegas projected wait wait
14:00it's not really going on and a half games six and a half to start let me ask you yeah
14:05but after
14:05the miles trade five and a half thank you very much you said ten wins joe if you said ten
14:08wins i'd be
14:09like wow you're really putting it on the table ten and seven let's rally a seven and ten football
14:13team that's what we're celebrating this team wins seven games are you telling me the national
14:16media won't say it's a resounding success resign you get seven and ten seven and ten record could
14:22not be resounding success no matter what you how you shape it or how you look at it those nerds
14:26say
14:26we're gonna have a top three high school team and then tell me they go seven and ten at the
14:30end
14:30and i'm it's still seven and ten joe it's that sort of resounding success strike those remarks from
14:34the record there mr thomas what are we talking about on this one all right so i have expectations no
14:40part
14:40of this conversation like everybody in the national media fan base outside of cleveland i think
14:46expectations are probably like four or five wins maybe even three so to say that like we've beaten
14:51expectations based on where we're coming into the season after trading some very high draft choices
14:56in the draft and everybody getting the tea leaves that are reading going saying hey they're probably
15:02playing for next year and all of a sudden you win seven games i think you're building a lot of
15:06momentum
15:06if you're able to do something like that this year momentum off of seven and ten joe come on now
15:10yeah i know you come on now this is my goal is to watch the browns
