Megan Holiday and Kevin Ryder catch up with Reel Big Fish backstage at Vans Warped Tour Long Beach.
Transcript
00:01Real big motherfucking fish in the house.
00:06Yeah.
00:06It's wild.
00:07That's right.
00:08It's wild, yeah.
00:09Tell us your history with Warped Tour.
00:11How many years did you play?
00:13All of them?
00:14I think it's your eighth.
00:15This is your eighth Warped Tour.
00:16This is our eighth Warped Tour?
00:17Yes, your first was in 1997.
00:19That sounds about right.
00:21And then the Australian Warped Tour.
00:23So I don't know if that's part of that number.
00:25I didn't know that.
00:26Yeah, we did.
00:26It was the one where, I think it was the first Australian Warped Tour
00:29where everybody camped.
00:30All the bands were camping.
00:32Oh my God, that's brutal.
00:34It was actually really, really fun
00:36because you'd wake up in the morning
00:38and we had a tour manager at that time
00:40who got up very early, thank goodness,
00:42and he would set up chairs outside our tents
00:44and then give us a cooler of VBs.
00:47So it's like you'd wake up with a cooler of beer,
00:49two seats, and then Peanut from 311 would be walking up
00:52and being like, hey, what's going on?
00:54That's pretty great.
00:55Yeah, and everybody's in tents.
00:56It was wonderful.
00:57Oh my God.
00:57I think that's the coolest thing about Warped Tour
01:00is it's just this sense of community
01:01and you were just saying you were going to come
01:03and you didn't know if you were going to know anybody
01:05and here you are and you're seeing everybody again.
01:08So how does it feel or why was this the right time?
01:11Because you guys haven't been playing for quite a while.
01:13Why was this the moment for Real Big Fish to come back?
01:17You know, there's really...
01:18So I was on stage last year with Goldfinger
01:22and it had been...
01:24I mean, I left the band at the end of 2010
01:28and when I got asked to play horns with Goldfinger,
01:31I was like, great, I'll do it.
01:32And then I got out on that stage
01:35and I felt like I relaxed for the first time in 16 years.
01:39Really?
01:39It felt like the only place in the world I go
01:41where I didn't have to tap dance.
01:43And so I was like, oh, we got to get back to work.
01:45Also, you need to start tap dancing.
01:47Right.
01:47Yeah, I would love it.
01:49You dust off the tap shoes.
01:50Well, and I actually, I also ran into Kevin
01:53and he's like, hey, he's like,
01:54when are you guys getting back together?
01:56We need you guys to get back together.
01:58And I'm subject to flattery.
02:00So I was like, hey, let's get it done.
02:02And Erin and I started having lunch
02:03and then the next thing you know,
02:05we was like, should we play music one of these times?
02:08And he's like, sure.
02:09And then it kind of snowballed from there
02:11and then our friend Biebs...
02:13Yes, I love Biebs.
02:14Yeah, Biebs told us, she's like,
02:16would you mind if I talk to Kevin?
02:17And we were like, I guess so.
02:19And it kind of snowballed.
02:20It all happened.
02:21I mean, honestly, to be sitting here right now,
02:23it happened so fast.
02:25I've got to be honest,
02:26I love the way things work out together.
02:28You're like, I don't know,
02:29maybe we should play some music.
02:30I don't know, maybe we should talk to Warped Tour.
02:32I don't know.
02:33We're playing.
02:34Right.
02:34It's crazy.
02:35Well, we have a lot of really wonderful adults
02:37in our lives who tend to make great decisions.
02:40We just go, yes, point me where.
02:42Yes.
02:43You know.
02:43That makes sense.
02:44How did you get on the track with TX2?
02:47Tell me about that.
02:49So the Real Big Fish Horn section
02:50has been doing things with like ice.
02:52They heard Ice Nine Kills
02:53and we released a tune with Necro Goblachon.
02:56So I think people were like,
02:57oh, the Real Big Fish Horn section
02:58is down to clown.
03:01So yeah, they contacted us and said,
03:02hey, can you guys do this thing?
03:04And you know, we're whores.
03:06So we're like, of course.
03:07Hell yeah.
03:08We're a horn section for goodness sakes.
03:09Oh, better.
03:09Evil is Contagious is the name of that song.
03:11Thank you so kindly.
03:13Yeah.
03:13I mean, you know, horns make everything.
03:15Yes.
03:15Better.
03:16Agreed.
03:17I'll say better with a question mark,
03:18but I think better.
03:19Better with an exclamation point.
03:20How about that?
03:21I'm glad you said it.
03:22That way it doesn't sound like ego.
03:24And you guys have such a long history with K-Rock.
03:27You know, I was just,
03:28you were showing me the front of Turn the Radio Off
03:32and it's Jed the Fish that's on there
03:34with a gun pointed at his head
03:36and he was probably loving every moment of that.
03:38So talk about, you know, your history with K-Rock,
03:40the first time you heard a song on the radio.
03:43I mean, oh man.
03:45I remember it very clearly.
03:47And it's a surreal experience
03:49when you're 18, 17 years old
03:53to hear a song that you've been playing
03:54in front of, you know, 50 people,
03:56100 people or whatever it is on the radio.
03:59It's, I mean, even to this day,
04:00it doesn't feel real.
04:03It still feels like some sort of joke
04:05that people are going to go,
04:06ah, ah, ah, ah, we got you.
04:08You thought something was going to happen.
04:10But it just kept happening.
04:11Yeah.
04:12K-Rock has always been good to us.
04:14That's like, you know, again, it's community.
04:17It's this like Southern California thing
04:19that has always, whether kicking and screaming,
04:24taken Real Big Fish where we needed to go.
04:26Community is the greatest thing in the world.
04:28It's what K-Rock has.
04:29It's what Real Big Fish has.
04:31It's what Warped Tour has.
04:32Well, and that was the part of it for us
04:34is it's like we realize, you know,
04:35you look at everything that's going on
04:37and it's like our job is to create community
04:40and catharsis.
04:41And our job is to go see people,
04:43not for them to come see us.
04:45That's the way we look at it.
04:46Yeah.
04:47And Scott is definitely not dead at all.
04:49You said that your son was at a bar
04:52or out somewhere at a show
04:53and there was a band that covered one of your songs.
04:56Yeah, so a friend of mine took his son actually
04:58to go see something at D Piazza's in Long Beach
05:01and one of the bands was playing our song Trendy
05:03that was off of our record Turn the Radio Off
05:06which is 30 years old this year.
05:08Wow.
05:08And I mean like we didn't pay them,
05:10not that I'm aware of,
05:12but it was just...
05:12You think that's the only way that would happen?
05:14Right, totally.
05:15It's like I'll slip them a little cash,
05:16do the thing.
05:17We can post it on the socials,
05:19everybody's happy.
05:20But no, it's...
05:21That's exciting.
05:22Yeah, especially after...
05:24I don't want to say all these years,
05:26but let's say this much time.
05:28Sure.
05:28You know, it sounds nicer.
05:29To be celebrated?
05:32Yeah, of course.
05:32And to feel like we've made a contribution to music.
05:36And there are going to be people here today
05:37that hear you for the very first time.
05:39Yep.
05:40Bananas.
05:40Do you like that?
05:41I do, very much so.
05:43I mean, again, we're so fortunate
05:45that the thing that we have done naturally
05:47and what feels effortlessly
05:49tends to speak to a wide array of generations.
05:53Like, we get young people,
05:55less young people, you know.
05:58And it's nice.
06:00It feels...
06:01Yeah, it feels really good.
06:02And I think that was part of the thing
06:03that also motivated us to like,
06:04hey, we got to get back to work.
06:06Well, I know that when, you know,
06:08word of you guys playing again,
06:10everybody was saying to me,
06:11oh my God, real big fish are back together
06:13and they're playing again.
06:13Oh my God.
06:14So I know that there's a lot of people
06:15who are here today
06:16who are super excited to see you,
06:19you know, along with us.
06:20And, you know, thank you so much
06:22for taking the time
06:23to come and hang out with us today.
06:24Oh, thank you.
06:25And on behalf of real big fish,
06:26thank you for everything you've done for us.
06:28It truly does mean the world to us
06:30and our families.
06:32So thank you.
06:33Absolutely.
06:33See you back to you.
06:35Thank you, man.
