00:10ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:44Incredibly high speed.
00:45Coming at you thick and fast.
00:46It's blind, it's tricky.
00:48It's going to be thrilling.
00:50Heart's beating out my chest.
00:53Head's spinning, I'm a mess.
00:55I'm shaking.
00:57One, two, three!
00:59It's relentless.
01:00It's relentless.
01:01We're fighting and we're chasing.
01:03It's game on.
01:04That's P1, Bates.
01:05Get in there, let's go, boys.
01:07Track evolution is very big here.
01:10Russell, absolutely flying.
01:15It's the worst track for me.
01:16P1.
01:17Whoa!
01:19If you get out of sync, you're in trouble.
01:21We're fighting hard.
01:22I don't back out of a fight.
01:23When I'll be in this fight, I'll be in the end.
01:30It's looking hugely competitive for Pol here in Hungary.
01:34Who can thread the eye of a needle at this bumpy and technical track?
01:39Well, with a different driver topping each practice session,
01:43it's almost too close to call.
01:45Not long to go now until qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:51A very warm welcome to the pit lane here in Budapest.
01:55Great to have Jamie and Martin alongside me.
01:57It is hot.
01:58There's such an energy about this place.
02:00Do you enjoy coming back?
02:01I love it.
02:02Yeah, we've been coming here a very long time now.
02:05It's a great place to be.
02:07The city is magnificent.
02:08So if you want to do a few more Grand Prix and you haven't done this one,
02:11I strongly recommend it.
02:12Yeah, there's such a good sort of hotbed of support for the sport.
02:16We saw it with F2 a little earlier on.
02:18And, Jamie, we talk a lot about this relentless sequence of corners.
02:21What is it like to drive?
02:23It's a challenge, but when everything is hooked up and it's feeling good,
02:27it's one of the most rewarding tracks.
02:28It's never stopping.
02:30You know, you've got one long straight here,
02:31but every other corner leads into another more or less.
02:34There's a lot of sort of medium speed, a lot of combined corners.
02:37So, like I say, when the car is good, it's one of the best tracks.
02:39The challenge this year seems to be the track is a bit different to previous years.
02:43There's a couple of areas that have been resurfaced and a few new bumps.
02:46Got a bit of wind as well to play with.
02:48So it looks a little bit more challenging than normal,
02:50but equally it's still such a nice track to drive.
02:52And what is fascinating is there's so little to choose between our top competitors here.
02:58Lando Norris topping the session.
03:00It feels a bit like we've been talking a lot about Ferrari,
03:02and he's kind of gone slightly under the radar.
03:05Yeah, well, it looked...
03:06We know that McLaren have got some upgrades.
03:09They seemed quite confident about them yesterday,
03:11but that didn't show up in the timing charts, did it?
03:14But Lando putting a great lap in there.
03:17It was oh so close between McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes.
03:22Red Bull just a little shy in that particular session,
03:25but let's see what it's like when it's new tyres, low fuel, full beans,
03:30electrical power here is absolutely no issue whatsoever.
03:35They can put nine megajoules, if you want to know the numbers,
03:38in the tank on the way around, and ample opportunity to do that.
03:42You need slow corners and braking, which pretty much describes this racetrack.
03:47But the cars look magnificent out there, I must say.
03:49They really do, don't they?
03:50And if you consider this as a track that McLaren have won the last two races at,
03:54with Lando and Oscar getting his maiden win in Formula One here,
03:58it's certainly a happy hunting ground for them.
03:59Perhaps not as much, though, as it is for Lewis.
04:03So, I mean, do you think Lewis was expecting this challenge
04:05from McLaren late in the day this morning?
04:08Let's see.
04:08I mean, what was interesting there, the graphic you saw of Lando going quickest,
04:12the sectors are yellow, green or purple, yellow, purple, green.
04:14And so it's still very difficult for the drivers to put the lap together.
04:18And so it is going to take a bit of a specialist round here
04:21to get the most out of it.
04:22I think that this track rewards a lot of feel,
04:25and the driver can get the most feel out of it,
04:26know how much grip there's going to be there,
04:28and that last run of Q3 will be on pole,
04:30and I don't think there's anyone better to do that than Lewis.
04:32As a driver, do you love to know a circuit relies on the driver making the difference?
04:38Yeah, always.
04:39But there are certain corners you want to be challenged,
04:41you want to be a little bit scared to feel alive, to be honest.
04:44But at this elite level, if you don't know a circuit within half a dozen laps,
04:49you're in the wrong business, generally,
04:51to know all the nuances of ten maximum.
04:54But, yeah, you try not to have favourites,
04:59but you can't help yourself.
05:01We've all got favourites, haven't we?
05:02OK, we have been giving you something of a mid-season review.
05:07We're going to carry that on in the build-up to qualifying,
05:09but now seems a good time to remind you of what's happening in the standings.
05:12Kimi Antonelli is still out in front,
05:13now on 204, 45 ahead of Lewis Hamilton,
05:16who in turn has a five-point advantage over George Russell.
05:20The McLaren teammates are in fifth and sixth.
05:23Red Bull's duo of Verstappen and Hadja in seventh and eighth.
05:26Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson on 42 and 39, respectively, in ninth and tenth.
05:31Oli Baermann has bagged the majority of Haas' points.
05:34He's on 18 and 13th.
05:35Single digits from Sainz down to Albon,
05:38and nothing yet for Hulkenberg down to Stroll.
05:40And in the constructors, Mercedes looking strong out in front by 73 points from Ferrari.
05:46McLaren in third on 195, with Red Bull on 151 in fourth.
05:51Alpine and Racing Bull's joint on 61,
05:54with a 21-point spread from Haas down to Cadillac,
05:57who are still yet to score.
06:01Okay, well, as I mentioned,
06:03we're having something of a half-term report,
06:06and we're delighted to be joined by Laura Mikkes,
06:08the team principal of Red Bull,
06:09and your team, fourth at the moment.
06:13And I think really what interests me
06:17is the fact that you've gone from something of a shift in mindset.
06:20You were setting the benchmark for many, many years,
06:23and now you're chasing it.
06:24So how do you manage that internally within the team?
06:28Look, everybody would like to be cruising at the front,
06:31but we are not doing that right now.
06:32I think if we take it in a rational way,
06:36we started the season quite far off,
06:38you know, more than a second of the pace.
06:39I think there is logical explanations for that.
06:41You know, one, how late we have pushed last year
06:43in this famous title fight.
06:46If we had to retake the same decision,
06:49we will do the same thing again.
06:50There were many reasons why we had to push late last year.
06:54So you pay a price for that in new regulations.
06:57And then, of course, you know,
06:58it's the first year with our new PU,
07:00and as much as the guys have done phenomenal jobs,
07:04there is also a price that you need to pay for that.
07:06So that was a starting point,
07:08maybe 1, 1.2 seconds at time in the first three races.
07:11And again, this team, as you said,
07:13have been famous for this incredible rate of development
07:16that it's been able to put forward in the last few seasons.
07:19And I think we are now halfway through.
07:22We are not anymore talking about 1.2 or 1 seconds.
07:26We are in the last 3.10,
07:28sometimes a bit more like perhaps today we will see in quality.
07:31And that's the phenomenal job that everybody has done.
07:35So, of course, it's not cruising at the front.
07:36But I think the team has certainly not lost its quality
07:39about development through the season.
07:41I can't make up my mind, so I'm going to ask you.
07:45Three podiums, fourth in the World Championship as a team,
07:48seventh and eighth correlating for the drivers.
07:50New power unit, as you say.
07:52Quite a lot of personnel changes.
07:54Is that a satisfactory half-term report or disappointing?
07:59It's never going to be satisfactory.
08:02Everyone in the team has only one objective, and it's to win.
08:06So nobody is going to feel satisfied until the car is back to the win,
08:13back to being able to fight for the win every weekend on merit.
08:16So, no, it is not a satisfactory half-term.
08:21But we are able to rationalise it and to put it in the big picture that we just discussed.
08:26And when you look at previous races, you've had flashes of great performances.
08:30Red Bull Ring, one of the fastest in the race.
08:32What do you attribute that to, and how do you replicate that now for the rest of the year and
08:35also for here?
08:37Yeah, I think you're right.
08:38You know, in the Red Bull Ring, we had our big update, our last big update,
08:42and it put us at that level.
08:45Since then, we were able to fight for the win there.
08:48We were not able to fight for the win in Silverstone.
08:52And probably a little bit missing a couple of tenths for fighting for the win last weekend.
08:57So I think it's the reality of where we are now.
08:59I think the average three tenths away is probably where we are.
09:03So there will be some races where we nail it better than competition,
09:06and suddenly you are in contention.
09:07And some races where we fall back a little bit.
09:09So we are well aware that the last three tenths are the most difficult one to find.
09:14But to Martin's point, nobody will stop until we get that back.
09:19Is Isaac Hadjar the best teammate Max has had at Red Bull?
09:23Probably certainly since Ricciardo when he was on form.
09:26Certainly he's been the best one for a long time.
09:29And he's been doing a fantastic job.
09:32Having a competitive second car was obviously one of the objectives we had for this year.
09:37And Isaac has been doing everything that needed to be done in order to be in that position.
09:43And he's well supported by the team.
09:44He's progressing every time the car is going out.
09:47And there will be up and down.
09:48There will be weekends where it's more difficult than others.
09:50But it's fair to say that it is now a situation where we can think about both cars, sharing test
09:59items, getting benefit from both cars' data.
10:02And it's a big step forward.
10:04And we love him on Team Rodeo.
10:05Thank you very much for your time, Laurent.
10:07All the best for the rest of the weekend.
10:09Okay, let's consider McLaren now.
10:12Craig is with Andrea Stella.
10:15Well, Andrea, we're looking back to assess the season so far.
10:19I suppose if you're only as good as your last session, that's not bad.
10:22But listen, you expected a little bit of a hangover in 2026 because of the efforts on two championships last
10:29year.
10:29So, more or less, can you accept where the team stands right now?
10:35Well, I think the first comment is that you are right.
10:38We need to look also at what was happening before the 2026 season.
10:42We come into this season as double constructor world champions, 24-25.
10:48A massive effort last year to become driver's world champion.
10:54And you head into the 2026 season with probably the biggest change of technical regulations ever.
11:01So, it's been a huge undertaking.
11:04We knew last year that somehow there was a compromise to find between the efforts we were putting on the
11:10ongoing season
11:10and what we were preparing for this coming up season.
11:15So, you know, when you enter a season as a champion, you want to be in position to defend it.
11:20So, we don't hide this ambition.
11:24At the moment, we recognise that Ferrari and Mercedes have done a better job than us.
11:28So, mid-season, they are ahead.
11:31They have been able to win races.
11:32We have not been able.
11:34We have a gap in terms of points.
11:35But at the same time, we are in a position where we start to deliver upgrades.
11:39And we start to see that from a performance point of view, we are back in the game.
11:44Yes.
11:45And amongst other things, new power units this year.
11:47You've admitted works teams, because they developed them, have a better handle maybe initially on how to exploit them.
11:55Will you be able to, by the end of this season, are you already able to exploit the power units
11:59as well as the works team?
12:01First of all, in fairness, I have to say that if I consider the gap that we had in average
12:07compared to Mercedes and Ferrari,
12:10I would say that this was more on the McLaren side, on the chassis side.
12:14We would have needed more grip overall in the corners, even though I said that from a power unit exploitation
12:22point of view,
12:23there were some lap time that was left behind.
12:26So, on one side, we've been working on understanding what concepts to pursue from a car development point of view.
12:33I think our ideas now are quite clear, but this is a very high-level business.
12:38It takes time to capitalize on your understanding, iteration, activity, development.
12:44But I see that from a neurodynamic point of view in particular, we are following the right directions,
12:49and there's improvement already here at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and there will be more coming for the next races.
12:55From a power unit point of view, this was a special year.
13:01The power units are very complex, and we needed to review a little bit the approach to exploitation, maximization,
13:09working together with HPP.
13:12It's a slightly different way of collaborating, if anything tighter, more intense.
13:18We knew that we needed more information, but the relationship remained excellent,
13:24and working together, we are now finding more and more lap time.
13:28And definitely, before the end of the season, we want to be in condition to squeeze in every single millisecond
13:35that is available in this beautiful piece of technology, that is the power unit in 2026.
13:41Okay, fair enough. We'll look forward to that.
13:43Just finally, on the two drivers, you're talking about wanting to defend the title.
13:47Lando thinks he's driving as well, if not better than last year.
13:50It's just that because he's not winning, maybe there isn't the publicity.
13:53Oscar, has he found it a little bit harder to acclimatize to these rules?
13:57I think this kind of 2026 cars, in general, you would characterize as low-grip cars.
14:07The car slides a lot, and we know that these are conditions in which Lando finds his natural space
14:14to use all the driving input to extract lap time, and conversely, we saw Oscar last year performing
14:21probably the best driver in very high grip conditions, and having to adapt his natural style when the car slides.
14:28So for Oscar, there was more work to do this season in terms of adaptation.
14:33We are working together with him. There's learning after every event, and honestly, this is a never-ending process.
14:41Like, you have to get better constantly if you want to be part of this high-level, super competitive sport.
14:48But one factor, if you allow me to say that, if anything is even better than what I've seen before,
14:54is the collaboration between our two drivers.
14:56You know, in times in which we need to find lap time, we need to go again through the process
15:02of not being the best,
15:04but being willing to become the best, cohesion is fundamental.
15:08Andrea, thank you very much indeed.
15:09No problem. Thanks a lot.
15:12He always gives such fantastic insight. What interests me, though, is when I spoke to Lando at the end of
15:17last year,
15:18he said winning the World Championship makes him even more hungry to emulate that this year.
15:22Can he do it this weekend, do you think? Can he break that deadlock of not getting a win in
15:27a Grand Prix yet, or even a pole?
15:29I see no reason why not. They look fast, they seem happy with their updates.
15:33We know that the last two years here, McLaren have been very strong, different regulations, of course,
15:38but they still know their way around here in terms of the fundamentals of what's required aero and suspension-wise.
15:46So I think they're in with a good shot this weekend, but quite clearly what the team learned about the
15:52ground effect,
15:53the four years we had the ground effect era, hasn't translated, and they're playing catch-up, as Andrea explained very
15:59well there.
15:59Is that the issue with Oscar as well? Because I find his season intriguing.
16:03We know his talent hasn't gone anywhere, but he's been somewhat anonymous so far.
16:06A little bit, and it's easy to be more anonymous when, I think, as a team, they're not necessarily fighting
16:12for wins at the moment,
16:13so it's easy for them to kind of fall into that midfield and be on the good side or the
16:17bad side of it,
16:17but it does seem like these cars do require a different driving style.
16:20They're lighter, they require a little bit more low-grip feeling from within the cockpit,
16:25and maybe something that's taking longer for Oscar to adapt to.
16:28Great. Okay, let's consider a Ferrari. It feels like a story of growing self-belief.
16:34Do you think they've fully hit their stride now?
16:36I think they've done a great job this year. I think they've shown more confidence in the car.
16:41They've been quite adventurous, quite avant-garde in some things, and they were really smart, like the wing.
16:47The rear wing would be a good example of that.
16:49And some other aspect lift up on the exhaust, but other teams have copied, which is always a good sign.
16:56And they seem more confident in their strategy as well in the race, and Lewis has obviously had a change
17:01of engine.
17:02Lewis loves these cars, but he didn't like the ground-effect cars.
17:06So if you put all of that together, the momentum has been, you know, it's like a snowball, basically.
17:14You're happier. Everybody's happier. The car's gripping up better.
17:19You're not wrecking your tyres so quickly, and that's what we're seeing with Ferrari.
17:23Yeah, amazing to see history being made with him winning his first race in red in Barcelona.
17:28And then, of course, his teammate following it up with a much-needed win for him personally at Silverstone.
17:34So they've been two massive highlights already this year.
17:37Can they build on that, bag more wins and potentially challenge for both titles?
17:41Absolutely. I mean, they're the kind of thorn for Mercedes that, you know, preventing Mercedes from getting away.
17:48And the reliability of the Mercedes that's holding them back is meaning that they have to focus on that rather
17:52than just focusing on pure performance.
17:54They're having to work out how they can make their cars for both of them both be parable but also
18:00reliable.
18:01And I think Ferrari, with everything they've done, and as Martin said, being a bit of the outliers in terms
18:06of the direction they've taken in development,
18:09is allowing them to be on their tails. I think they need to get a little bit closer, and if
18:13they can get on top of the engine upgrades as well,
18:15as that comes into fruition later in the year, it'll be interesting to see how they develop as well.
18:19Get a little bit closer, take a step forward. That's what Lewis said after Belgium.
18:24He did think they could and should have won. He personally thinks he could and should have won Belgium and
18:28Silverstone.
18:29So what is required for that step?
18:33I think Mercedes could have and maybe should have won all the races so far this season, if I'm honest,
18:39one way and another.
18:41But yeah, they're just, they're looking for, you know, Laurent Macchi at Rebel was telling us, Macchi was telling us
18:47they were looking for 1.2 at the beginning of the year.
18:49Ferrari looking for a tenth or two, that's all. And then when they ace it, they're winning the races.
18:56So they're right in there. They just need to finesse a few things. But, you know, it's a moving goalpost,
19:01as always, in terms of you're chasing a team that's also developing.
19:05An incredible pairing with their drivers, both hugely talented. Have they got the personnel right there now? It feels like
19:12Fred is pretty calm in steering the ship.
19:14Definitely. I think cohesion within that team seems to be better, but that thrives off confidence, in my opinion.
19:21I feel like as soon as you get race wins, you get results. It backs up what, say, Lewis is
19:25the direction he's driving the team in. Same for Charles.
19:27So you have to almost, it's a bit chicken and egg. You have to get the results to kind of
19:30fuel the team and everything else.
19:32And I think that's what they're doing so far this year, which is definitely making a big difference.
19:36OK, time to consider Mercedes now. Ted caught up with the championship leaders, led by Toto Wolff a little earlier
19:42on.
19:43Well, thank you very much, Natalie. Yes, let's finish at the current world constructors and world drivers leaders, Mercedes.
19:50Toto, congratulations. You've won every Grand Prix apart from two so far.
19:54You've got every Grand Prix pole position as well. After the four years of hurt since your last constructors win,
20:03has it just been even sweeter this season when you've got it right?
20:08You know, we always see the glass half empty and the stats are really good this year.
20:14And you could even say that the two that we've lost, we were a bit unlucky with safety cars, et
20:18cetera.
20:19But as a matter of fact, we have had a lot of reliability problems and we've probably left a high
20:26double-digit number of points on the table that would have been feeling really comfortable and it doesn't.
20:31And that's why we are, you know, a certain degree of scepticism in the sense of, are we really good
20:40enough?
20:40OK, yes, that's interesting, isn't it? Because I actually, unlike most people, I read your preview material coming here and
20:45you were quite keen on saying, look, we just want a clean weekend where both cars finish in the points.
20:51Something that Mercedes haven't managed to do. They've only managed to do once, both cars in the points, once in
20:56Austria since Miami on the 3rd of May.
20:59Yeah, exactly. We always had in the last few races one car that didn't finish, that did DNF, and, you
21:07know, I can't remember all of them, but it was George, it was Kimi in Barcelona, it was Kimi probably
21:13should have won in Silverstone.
21:14So there's so much that bringing both home, hopefully in the front, would be great, but let's see.
21:22OK, but bearing that in mind, is there anything, you know, you'd like to say to everybody, not only at
21:27home, but in the factory as well?
21:28You know, those four years when you weren't winning, Christian Horner taking the mickey out of you for not winning
21:33while Red Bull were on a run, you know, Lando Norris winning the other year.
21:38There must be a sense, bearing in mind what you've just said about the frustration of not being further ahead,
21:42of, yes, we've made it, it's a relief, we're back.
21:46So the relief will come in at the end of the season, when the points are being counted together, and
21:54I hope it's going to be a relief and not a, it could have been better.
21:59OK, all right, just a quick line on this weekend then, if we can, the Ferrari challenge, it's as keen
22:05as it was in Spain and in Silverstone.
22:08Are you up to it? Is Kimi up to it? Is George up to the challenge?
22:12Yeah, I mean, absolutely, they are really good here.
22:14Also Norris was quickest now, so it's going to be very tight, the fight in the front, overtaking, it's going
22:21to be a bit of a struggle.
22:22We were fastest in the long runs yesterday, but obviously tomorrow, everything is different.
22:28OK, Toto, thank you very much, we'll let you go.
22:30Very interesting, yeah, there, so Toto saying that, yeah, not counting there, chickens, before the end of the season down
22:36here at Mercedes.
22:38Great stuff, thanks, Ted.
22:39Now, Martin, you said to me a little earlier that you'd rather a fast car that was unreliable than the
22:43other way around.
22:44Nevertheless, it can't be good for the blood pressure.
22:46When you go into a race, wondering if you're going to see the checkered flag?
22:50Yeah, but I think there's been better reliability than I expected with these really complex power units, to be honest.
22:57So, yeah, you know, George has had some very painful moments, hasn't he?
23:01When he was out in the lead in Canada would be a good example, but Kimi's had his fair share
23:06as well.
23:06Toto describes it of just how many points they've left on the table.
23:11But, you know, over a season, you've got to expect, you're going to get some highs and some lows.
23:16So, I think they're in an absolutely great place.
23:19They've got two drivers who are a product of their own system.
23:23They're like a stick of Mercedes rock, both of them, for Kimi and for George.
23:28And the team looks very cohesive.
23:31Everything looks good for them.
23:32I don't think Toto will be losing a whole lot of sleep at the moment.
23:36Well, he may be losing some over the fact that he probably thought the challenge for him, in terms of
23:42management, would be between his two drivers.
23:44He's also got to keep one eye over his shoulder, looking at his old driver, Lewis Hamilton, because he knows
23:48what he's capable of.
23:49I think that's it.
23:50He knows what he's capable of.
23:51He knows him better than most in this paddock.
23:53So, he knows he's going to be a serious threat.
23:56But, equally, they've got a lot of control in this garage in the sense that they know how strong their
24:00car is.
24:01They know how strong their drivers are.
24:02And I think if they just focus on themselves and, obviously, the reliability is a factor, I think they can
24:07continue to extend out this season and sort of palm off the Ferrari threat.
24:13But, it's almost like the devil you know in a way with Lewis, because, exactly, they know exactly what they're
24:18working with when they're up against someone like that.
24:20OK, great stuff.
24:21Well, it's all building very nicely to a very competitive qualifying session.
24:26Join us after the break when we will hear from Ant Davidson more on this tight, technical, cart-like track.
24:33Ant Davidson, up next.
24:36Turn two and turn three, you then send it up the hill towards this blind crest of turn four.
24:41Definitely one of my favourite corners on the entire circuit.
24:45As you go up higher, you can see what the drivers are trying to do here.
24:49After the apex of turn four, you then run right to the curb on the exit.
24:53And then you quickly have to get back over to the left-hand side of the circuit to help open
24:58up turn five.
25:07Welcome back to a circuit where the driver can really make a difference.
25:11Here's Ant with more on this intriguing track.
25:20The Hungara Ring feels like some kind of oversized go-kart track, coming here after the fast-flowing circuit of
25:26Spa-Francorchamps just from one week ago.
25:28So let's take a look at this track in a bit more detail, starting here at turn one.
25:35It's a heavy braking zone.
25:37Around 300 kilometers an hour you arrive at this corner, 185 miles an hour, and you hug the inside.
25:44Try not to grab a front brake or two.
25:46Very easy to lock up here, particularly in qualifying when you're pushing the limit of that braking point.
25:53By the time you reach the apex point, the middle of the corner here in turn one, you can often
25:57be battling some understeer because the front tyres are still cool after starting the lap.
26:02And then when you have understeer in the middle of the corner, it can often translate into a snap of
26:07oversteer on the exit.
26:08And you see the straight mode board.
26:10That's what you're trying to get to on the button on the steering wheel under heavy acceleration.
26:14And the last thing you want is the rear of the car to snap on you through that process.
26:21After turn two and turn three, you then send it up the hill towards this blind crest of turn four.
26:28Definitely one of my favorite corners on the entire circuit.
26:31As you go up higher, you can see what the drivers are trying to do here.
26:35After the apex of turn four, you then run right to the curve on the exit.
26:39And then you quickly have to get back over to the left-hand side of the circuit to help open
26:43up turn five, a critical part of the lap to get right.
26:48After the slow-speed chicane of turns six and seven, there's a short straight before you arrive at turns eight
26:54and nine.
26:54Two medium-speed corners.
26:56This is the key part of the lap to get right in the heart of sector two.
27:00The temptation is to carry too much speed through eight sometimes, and that compromises your line in towards turn nine.
27:07Ideally, you want to get the car back over to the left-hand side to help open up turn nine,
27:12because it's a flat-out kink to the left or the critical turn 11.
27:18By the time you reach turn 14, the final corner of this circuit, the rear tyres in particular, are severely
27:25overheating from the punishment that you've given them from the rest of the lap.
27:28And it's a long corner, so you need the rear of the car to be stable as you carry the
27:33speed through this.
27:34If you lose the rear end, even just a fraction, it will cost you valuable lap time.
27:41And with overtaking being exceptionally hard around this track, it puts even more pressure on the drivers in qualifying here
27:47to absolutely nail their lap.
27:51And one other wonderful thing about this place is that pretty much wherever you sit in the grandstands, you can
27:57see about 80% of it.
27:59It's quite incredible when you go to the rooftops of the hospitality, you can pretty much see it all.
28:03It's amazing.
28:04If you haven't been to Hungary, you really should, shouldn't you?
28:06Definitely. I mean, it's a very efficient use of space if you actually work out where the track goes, if
28:10you run it or walk it or whatever it is.
28:12And that's why I think the go-kart kind of term comes in, because it does go back on itself
28:16a lot.
28:17It's got a lot of these corners where, you know, you do feel like they're hairpins, but it's not just
28:21like a long straight into a big stop.
28:23It's got a bit more flow to it.
28:24It's a lot of corners leading into other corners.
28:26And, yeah, I can see exactly why it's a driver's favourite.
28:28It sits in this kind of natural bowl as well.
28:30So if you sit around the perimeter of the track, you see so much more of this place than you
28:35do on most circuits we go to.
28:37We really enjoyed your track ride, obviously.
28:40What is the trick, do you think, both of you, in a sentence to nailing a single lap round here?
28:46Controlled aggression.
28:47I would say that's the real key to getting a good lap around here.
28:51And it's so easy to go either side of that, to underdrive the car, not to drive up to its
28:56maximum grip potential,
28:57but equally to overdrive the car and start sliding it around everywhere too much.
29:03And like I said, in that final sector, that's when it really comes to bite you with the tyres getting
29:07too hot.
29:07They call it Monaco without the walls.
29:08Is it the same in terms of rhythm, finding that rhythm around here?
29:11Maybe a little bit, but more I think you need this sort of flow here.
29:15You need to have a really good feel for what the car is capable of.
29:18And a lot of these changes of direction, yeah, if you overdrive exactly as it answered or underdrive,
29:24you're going to not have the balance you need throughout the whole corner.
29:27So it's a tricky fine line to get it right here.
29:29Excellent. Thank you very much.
29:30OK, let's head to Ted. He's in the pit lane.
29:33Thank you very much, Natalie.
29:34Well, Lando Norris is one of the most easygoing guys out there.
29:37Does he have the controlled aggression that Anthony talks about to be on pole position?
29:43Well, somewhere at McLaren, I think they've got a file called How to be Quick at Hungary
29:47because Lando surprised everybody by being fastest in FP3, just by a tenth from Lewis Hamilton.
29:54But they'll be relieved down here at McLaren that the upgrades are working.
29:58But as we move to Mercedes, wasn't that interesting what Andrea Stella told Craig about Oscar Piastri?
30:04That Piastri just has to react to the car sliding around under these new regulations
30:11where there's so much less downforce than last year.
30:14That explains why Piastri has been behind Norris so far this season.
30:18Right. Kimi Antonelli, let's have a look at his car, shall we?
30:21Because he is ready to go the same lap time, more or less, as Lewis Hamilton by a hundredth of
30:25a second.
30:26But again, his teammate George Russell, half a second behind what's going on with Russell,
30:31needing to find pace today.
30:34Right. Talking about needing to find pace, Max Verstappen is there or thereabouts.
30:38fourth, fifth place, something like that.
30:41But that's not going to be enough for him for Red Bull.
30:44They want more.
30:46The front row would be a surprise, but that is what they're going for.
30:50Isaac Hadjar called the car undriveable.
30:52So what have they done?
30:54Well, take a look at it.
30:55Look how many pieces that car is in there.
30:57Just finishing some major setup changes on Hadjar's car.
31:01If he said it was undriveable, they believe him, and they've changed the car,
31:05even though he was only three-tenths behind Max Verstappen.
31:08So let's finish with Ferrari.
31:11They've come here with a beautifully engineered car.
31:13They've got a new rear wing.
31:15They've got these new little winglets on it.
31:17They've got downforce.
31:18They've got grip.
31:19They've got mechanical grip, which is what you need around here in Hungary.
31:23So it's up to Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc because it's all tyres, tyres, tyres.
31:28Keep them cool.
31:29Don't stress them too much too early.
31:31And then you'll have the grip you need in the last corner.
31:34It's always been the way over 40 years, 41 editions of qualifying here at the Hungaria Ring.
31:40You've needed it in the past, and you're going to need it here again today.
31:44Can't wait for this one.
31:45Natalie, back to you.
31:47Thank you, Ted.
31:48Did that come as a surprise to you then, Jamie?
31:51We saw some of their faster runs on the second run out on the softs.
31:56I think so because historically this place is kind of,
31:59to get the optimum out of the tyre grip and the tyre life is that one lap.
32:02And you sort of try and optimise that one lap even across the lap.
32:05You don't necessarily want to overpush sector one and you want to manage it for the last sector.
32:09Equally, there seems to be a difference between thermal degradation,
32:12which is sort of the surface temperature,
32:14which is what we're seeing in the last sector, for example,
32:16where they're struggling a bit with the rear and general degradation.
32:19And clearly the degradation isn't too bad, but the thermal degradation is quite bad.
32:22So a cool-down lap, go again, seems to work.
32:25But I think in qualifying, it needs to be optimised on that one lap.
32:28Now, Ted touched on it there, Ant, the difference between the teammates.
32:32What do you put that down to?
32:33It's a driver's track.
32:34Same as Monaco.
32:36You're going to see discrepancies between and differences between the driver's style.
32:40And therefore, big differences.
32:42Look, Piastri, half a second away from Lando.
32:44George Russell, half a second away or a bit more from Kimi Antonelli.
32:48The two Ferrari drivers, a little bit closer than that.
32:50But still, I believe with the top three teams, maybe four if you include Red Bull in this fight,
32:56who we see on pole position here today is going to be the driver that drives it the best,
33:01not who is in the best car.
33:02Which will make it all the more satisfying for whoever manages it.
33:05So come on then, who's your money on, Jamie?
33:07Let's say stick with Lewis Hamilton.
33:09Yeah, 10th pole round here at a single track.
33:12Unbelievable record for him.
33:14It would be an unbelievable record.
33:15And in some ways, I hope it happens.
33:17But I think Kimi Antonelli is going to be a bit of a needle in his side.
33:20Do you?
33:21And what about his teammate?
33:22What about Charles?
33:23He put it on pole here last year.
33:25It's so close.
33:26And that's honestly, for the first time in a long time, I don't know.
33:29First time in a long time, you are speechless.
33:31Okay, don't go anywhere because on the way next is qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
33:44Incredibly high speed.
33:45Coming at you thick and fast.
33:47It's blind.
33:47It's tricky.
33:48It's going to be thrilling.
33:50Hearts beating out my chest.
33:52I'm a mess.
33:55Hands taking.
33:57One-off, five, six.
33:59It's relentless.
34:00It's relentless.
34:01We're fighting and we're chasing.
34:03It's game on.
34:04That's P1, mate.
