01:13a first for the MP team in four years,
01:16and a first for the Finnish fans at this level in 13 years,
01:19since Aro Vainio at Hungary in 2013.
01:23Well, that will be Tuka Tapanen on pole position
01:26for the feature race tomorrow.
01:28He took the Aramco pole, his first one in Formula 3.
01:33But today in sprint race Saturday, 19 laps coming up,
01:36and the day where we flip the top 12 around,
01:39and it leaves us with an all-ART front row.
01:42The last time the ART-GP team got a one-two finish
01:45was here at the Hungar Ring in 2019
01:49with Christian Lundgaard and Max Futrell.

02:06but you said to me just before we went on the broadcast
02:08that he's one of the only drivers inside the top few positions
02:11that hasn't, top four positions.
02:13Top four rows.
02:13Top four rows that hasn't won a race.
02:15So Kanato going to try and add himself
02:17to the list of Formula 3 winners.
02:19Gerard Shee there, he's, I mentioned it in practice
02:21and qualifying, a bit of a specialist around here.
02:23He seems to always go exceptionally well around here,
02:25has done in previous seasons in other categories
02:28and also last season as well.
02:30Jin Nakamura we saw was strong, of course,
02:33recently as well,
02:34taking his first victory for the high-tech team.
02:36But we've got a hot day ahead of us.
02:39Air temperature 21 degrees.
02:41Track temperature already nudging 40.
02:43So I think keeping the Pirelli tyres in check
02:47even in this sprint race is going to be crucial.
02:49Tyre heating not going to be an issue.
02:52Absolutely not.
02:53It's a case of managing the tyres throughout the race, isn't it?
02:57And that's something that we saw be a factor last year.
03:00Let's go through how they all line up, though.

03:03it's Hiyu Yamakoshi.
03:05He had a disappointing day yesterday.
03:07One of the drivers up there in the top 10 in the championship,
03:09P7, Mateo de Paolo McLaren Jr. next to him.
03:12Saleem Hanna makes his second appearance of the season

03:18who's 10th in the championship,
03:19but a disappointing qualifying.
03:21Then it's Nanda Woodbrun-Bakhti and Woo-Kyun Shin,
03:23who made his F3 debut here three years ago.

03:28That's four races now out of the top 12 in qualifying.
03:31Noah Stromsted at both disappointing practice and qualifying yesterday.

04:35P5 in the championship, won the Spa feature race.
04:38Jin Nakamura is on row 2 with JRG, two drivers who have won.
04:43Likewise, Maciej Gwadish, a winner at Silverstone in the feature race.
04:47He's alongside his ART Grand Prix teammate, Kanato Lee,
04:51the only driver in the top four rows, yet to take a win.

04:56It's unsurprising that it's ART looking pretty strong this weekend.
05:00They were strong here last year.
05:02Tuka Tappan and our pole.
05:03So it's a tomorrow race for ART last season.
05:05Got a podium in the feature.
05:07And ART, we've mentioned, Chris, haven't we, this season,
05:09have really taken a step forward.
05:10You spoke to them at pre-season testing.
05:12They've kind of changed their approach, their tyre prep as well,
05:15and they've got a really good three drivers issue
05:18with Gwadish, Kanato Lee, and also Taito Kato.
05:21Actually surprised to see Taito Kato not really featuring
05:24inside the top ten.
05:25He's been very strong throughout the season.
05:27Didn't quite hook up that last lap in qualifying,
05:29which was crucial, wasn't it?
05:31But they're going to go from the front row.
05:33I wonder if there'll be any formation flying,
05:34any teamwork from our front two.
05:36All these drivers race in teams of three,
05:39but ultimately they have to find their own seats.
05:43They have to race for themselves, their own careers.
05:46So generally not a huge amount of teamwork.
05:47We'll see.
05:48Well, we caught up with our top three on the grid
05:51after qualifying Leicester Day.
05:52Let's hear from them starting with third place
05:54for Damzuka's oil, Gerardji.
05:58We'll see how the launch is,
06:00and we try to make any places that possible
06:03and just try to manage the tyres for the rest of the race.
06:06Just need to get a good start, manage the tyres well,
06:09and then obviously, yeah, as I said, manage the tyres well.
06:14I mean, that will be the key tomorrow,
06:16just to save them at the start,
06:19not slide with the tyres,
06:21and then keep that position well.
06:24So I hope so tomorrow,

06:52we've got Pique corner turn one,
06:54Hamilton turn two,

06:57Lacey turn 11.
06:58This is going to be Michael Schumacher corner,
07:00Senna corner,
07:01likewise as well.
07:02So that's why you might hear us calling the corners by names rather than numbers.
07:07But you mentioned,
07:08Piers,
07:08it's going to be a crucial launch,
07:10isn't it?
07:11This is a long run down to turn one,
07:13and one where your best overtaking opportunity could come down off the launch to turn one.
07:19Yeah,
07:19as much as the Hungarring circuit is quite difficult to overtake,
07:22with lots of slow,
07:23medium speed corners,
07:24quite narrow,
07:25the start can often be quite critical.
07:28One,
07:28because once you get past that first lap,
07:30the positions are often harder to change from there.
07:33But also,
07:33long run from your grip position down towards turn one.
07:36We often see two,
07:37three wide,
07:37both into turn one and turn two.
07:39So you have to get a good launch away from the line.
07:42We heard from Gerard Chi just a moment ago,
07:43who goes off third.
07:45He mentioned that that's what he's thinking about.
07:46And then also,
07:47you run through turn one and two as well.
07:49It's crucial.

07:50Where do you brake with cooler tires and brakes
07:53than you would be used to on a flying run?
07:55And that's what will be going through the minds of these young drivers.

08:17So Ugo will be looking to extend his lead over Freddie Slater going into tomorrow.

08:25as they try and side their way through the top 10.
08:27One point per position gained basically inside the top 10 Slater only to get himself from 11th to 10th to
08:33get that first point.
08:34And Ugochiku starting in seventh will gain a couple if he finishes or a few where he finishes where he
08:39starts.

09:08It seems Lee has picked up the pieces from a mistake for Gerard G there and it's Kanato Lee back
09:13into the lead as they head through Hamilton.

09:20Maciej Gwadish is the ART off and we had another car going off as well and the yellow flags are
09:25out.
09:26I'm sure we'll be followed by a safety car and look at the dust coming through turn three.
09:30It's Lee from Niall then one of the Red Bull Juniors.
09:33It's Rivera from Colnagy and for fifth place is one of the Rodons which I think is Brando Badouwer and
09:40the field now making their way through.
09:42There's the five Trident.
09:43Brady Slater second in the championship.
09:45One point behind the number two of Ugachuku who is ahead of Tafanen as a head through the Shikane for
09:51the first time.
09:51Yes,
09:52Slater and Tafanen have had good starts.
09:53They're right behind Ugachuku but drama down towards turn two.
09:56It was Jin Nakamura that went airborne.
09:58You saw the amount of dust,
09:59didn't you?
10:00Down towards turn one then into turn two.
10:02Also turn three as well.
10:03We're going to have a look at that incident and the start once again.
10:07Gwadish was just completely innocent on the outside taken out of the race.
10:10Looks like hopefully everyone's okay.
10:13Gwadish is out.
10:14Yep, Jin Nakamura is getting out as well.
10:15That would have been uncomfortable when he landed heavily because there's no,
10:18not very much suspension movement on these cars.
10:21They're designed to go around the circuit at high speed,
10:23not land from a few feet in the air.
10:25But the marshalling team do a great job.
10:27Almost all the cars are being retrieved already,
10:30but disappointing to see a few of our top few drivers taken out earlier.
10:34I think it was Gerard Shee as well that was involved, wasn't it, Chris?
10:36Yeah, it was, and the safety car outs now.
10:41You can just see the cars making their way around.
10:44You can see Gerard's teammate, Nicola Lacorte,
10:47threw safely.
10:48He's in P6.
10:50A good chick who's seventh.
10:51Tapinen is eighth.
10:52Slater ninth.
10:52James Wharton has come from P15 to P10,
10:56so up into the points.
10:57But the two championship leaders got through safely.
11:00But unfortunately for the drivers,
11:03P2 and P4 out of the race.
11:06Gerard Shee has tumbled all the way down to P28
11:09from the second row of the grid.
11:11And it was a really good launch off the line for him as well, wasn't it?
11:13Oh, Gerard Shee, he mentioned that pre-race interview.
11:16He said the launch is going to be crucial,
11:17and he absolutely nailed the clutch drop.
11:19He was in the lead before we even got to turn one.
11:22Had time to cut across and go to the inside.
11:24There is Gerard Shee.
11:26Unfortunately, right rear puncture
11:28owing to that contact between Nakamura.
11:32And let's have a look at the start
11:33and see how it all played out once again.
11:35So you're looking at the blue dams,
11:37Lucasaw car on the outside of row two there.
11:39Brilliant launch.
11:40You can see just absolutely got away from the line perfectly.
11:43The two ARTs, not a bad start.
11:44Then we were three wide.
11:45It was Campos, two Campos of Rivera
11:48and Teofil Niall sandwiching Jin Nakamura.
11:51Then just a slightly deep on the brakes from Gerard Shee.
11:55Great opportunist driving.
11:56Ganato Lee pulling to the inside and taking the lead.
11:59Then it was Teofil Niall.
12:00Then let's keep an eye on the grey, silver, high-tech car.
12:04The 25 is currently sitting in fourth place.
12:07Oh, he wasn't sure which way to go, was he?
12:09He went inside, then outside, got a bit unsighted,
12:11and then with the dust and the dirt,
12:12braked a bit late, collected the back of Gerard Shee.

12:32He was looking at the lead, wasn't he, up towards Turn 1?
12:33He had the best start.
12:34Everyone just kind of went left, and he parted the sea in the middle.
12:38Then let's have a ride on board with Maciej Guadis.
12:41The driver was on the front row.
12:42He's already fourth.
12:43He's losing position now in fifth.
12:44He knows he's not had a good start.
12:45He's just having a look.
12:47We're going to see exactly what happens here.
12:48Jin Nakamura.
12:49Oh, Nakamura just misjudges the braking.
12:51You can see him go up, and then Guadis is just a passenger.
12:54Hey, what the f*** is this now?
12:56Stop doing it.
13:00Unfortunately, Nakamura, there's not much you can say there.
13:04It's just a mistake.
13:05Guadis understandably upset, but Nakamura would not have been trying.
13:08He wasn't trying to do anything outrageous there.
13:10He just misjudged the braking point into Turn 2.
13:12So easily done when it's, you know, the first time we've been into that corner at that speed
13:16with cooler tires and the dust as well.
13:19Yeah, it's an investigation that won't last long there, is it, post-race.
13:22But this interview from Ugachiku somehow stayed in the same position despite all the chaos.
13:26Yeah, so Ugachiku actually had to take a bit of a base of action.
13:29Good awareness from Ugachiku there.
13:31He saw there was two cars on his inside.
13:33Took the left.
13:34It's just damage limitation for Ugachiku.
13:35He knows he doesn't need to score highly in this race.
13:38He just wants to stay out of trouble.
13:39All of the drama to his right-hand side.
13:41Again, just keeping his nose clean.
13:43I think he knows, again, the Campos, the race pace of the Campos will come good at the end of
13:47the race.
13:47And there you can see airborne Nakamura into the side of Guadis.
13:53It was lucky to be only three cars involved there, as everyone else pretty much maintained composure.
13:58It's easy to spin in sympathy if you see a car go up in the air and panic and hit
14:02the brakes.
14:03Yeah, I think Guadis saw a real opportunity at a race win there, didn't he?
14:07Hugely frustrated is the Polish driver.
14:10Guadis just making their way through the chicane now.
14:13And there you can see the winners and losers.
14:15So Jehevin David's come up to the top ten.
14:17Barrichello just outside it.
14:19Could this be first points for him today?
14:21And Mattia Kilnagy, Piers, as you point out, six places gained for the Red Bull Junior.
14:25We jumped on board with Teer Phil Nau.
14:27We saw how it's an excellent start he had.
14:28He only, quote-unquote, only gained four compared to Kilnagy's six.
14:32So, of course, Kilnagy, there's three additional places from the drivers crashing ahead.
14:36But he's got lights are out, which means that Kanato Lee, he's done one job, brilliant composure at the start
14:43to regain the lead.
14:44Now he has to lead the slightly reduced field of 26, 27 cars round to the start.
14:51Kanato Lee has control of the pace.
14:53Up towards centre corner we come now.
14:56And it will be over to Kanato Lee to let us know when we get by.
15:00Teer Phil Nau, third in the championship, could really do with closing the gap to the top two.
15:04He will be looking at getting by Kanato Lee as we see the cards charging towards us at the final
15:10corner there.
15:11All in a line and out the final corner we come.
15:13And now the race down to turn one begins.
15:16And it's Kanato Lee there just trying to break the toe of Nau.
15:20The two campus drivers, second and third.
15:22You've got the Red Bull Juniors, Rivera and Kilnagy.
15:25And Kilnagy having a look at Ernesto Rivera just covering that off.
15:29Then it's Badouwe, Lecorte, Ugachiku, Tapanen, Slater and Yevon David, your top ten.
15:34Yep, there was a good restart from Kanato Lee.
15:36I thought he, initially I thought he didn't do a very good job of catching Teer Phil Nau out.
15:40Because Teer Phil Nau went with him.
15:41But a great last corner for Kanato Lee means he's got a little bit of breathing room.
15:45No DRS, of course, until we've completed one full lap.
15:48So we should have it on the next lap by.
15:50So Kanato Lee has an opportunity to try and just extend the gap as much as possible.
15:54Konnagy was looking up the inside of Rivera at turn one.
15:57But actually that's meant that he's dropped off the back of Rivera and is now under pressure from Badouwe behind.
16:02In towards the chicane we can't.
16:04And we have to do at least one full lap before we get the DRS and Lecorte there.
16:09And Ugachuku side by side.
16:12Ugachuku still in seventh place trying to get by Nicola Lecorte.
16:16And he's going to have a go here.
16:18Ugachuku trying to get down the inside.
16:20But Lecorte just about holding on.
16:22Ugachuku has his championship rival two places behind and wants to put some distance between himself and Slater.
16:29Uncharacteristic to see Ugachuku so feisty at this early stage of the race.
16:32How often do we see the Campos' sit and just wait until the second half of the race before they
16:37start scything their way through the field?
16:38We've got fighting further down.
16:40That was the 19 there.
16:41Christian Ho having a look up the inside of Schumacher but not being able to get the move done.
16:45Up towards the final corner.
16:47We'll wait for that DRS enabled.
16:48Three zones this year between 11, 12 and then down towards the first corner and between turns one and two
16:55as well.
16:56Helping to add to the overtaking opportunities.
16:59On board with our championship leader Ugachuku staring at the back of Lecorte.
17:04Is he going to go for a move here?
17:06No.
17:06Wants to make places, Piers, but also cannot afford to get a grid drop for tomorrow.
17:11Get himself involved in an incident.
17:13Well, I think this is why often we see the Campos' who are generally at the front of the championship
17:17also taking it a bit easy when everything's a bit more variable.
17:20The start of the race, any penalty that doesn't get served if you crash out of the sprint race will
17:24get applied to the feature tomorrow, which is where the big points are available.
17:29And they can't afford to lose those big points.
17:31We're pretty close to the back of Lecorte.
17:33Lecorte, I think, actually got through on that previous lap, didn't he?
17:35Or did they pass and then repassed?
17:37I think it was, yeah, I think it was the latter there.
17:41They were side by side coming up towards the chicane here.
17:44Kanato Lee leading us through the chicane.
17:47Nihal right behind him.
17:49Nihal, a winner this season.
17:51Three-time pole sitter as well.
17:53We'll want to get through and get himself towards the lead of the race.
17:57Rivera in third.
17:58Then Kulnagi, Badouer, your top five.
18:00And Kanato Lee now takes us through a lacy corner and down towards Schumacher and Teofil Nihal right there behind
18:07in second place.

18:09It's Jose Garfias down towards turn one.

18:13Oh, big dive.
18:14Big dive on McLaughlin.
18:15McLaughlin having to get out of it.
18:16And it looks like they're probably going to go side by side down towards turn two.

18:21Yeah, pure block pass there, wasn't it?
18:23DRS now enabled.
18:25So we will see that being used down to turn 12 next time round, I assume.
18:29And then we'll have it down the start-finish straight here as well.
18:32In fact, it's this lap.
18:33So DRS immediately open there.
18:36And now we will have Nihal closing in on Kanato Lee down towards the first corner and the second corner
18:42as well.
18:42And the pressure really being applied to the ART driver.
18:45And Ugachiku almost into the back of Le Corte there, Fiss.
18:48Yeah, interesting that both Nihal and Ugachiku very close.
18:51Close enough to mount an attack and neither of them choosing to do so so far.
18:54Oh, actually Ugachiku two wheels on the grass at the inside of turn two.
18:57Le Corte resolute in defence.
18:59Oh, but Ugachiku's found a door.
19:01He's going to barge through on the inside here.
19:02A little bit of wheel-to-wheel contact.
19:04And front-wing damage for Ugachiku into the back there of Le Corte there.
19:08And now just, you can see, weaving going up towards turn four.
19:13And Ugachiku just going into the back of Le Corte.
19:16And I think his tyre has survived that contact.
19:18Yeah, I think they've both got away with that somehow.
19:20I think it's just taken the cover off the front-wing end plate but not actually removed it completely.
19:24So Ugachiku will be lucky and feel fortunate.
19:27You can see him weaving on the straight to find out whether he actually did have large sustained front-wing
19:32damage.
19:32But you can see how much pace Ugachiku has on Le Corte at this stage.
19:35He feels like Le Corte's holding him up, trying to get through.
19:38He knows that he can pull a few points on his championship rival Slater behind.
19:42But not easy to overtake around this Hungara Ring circuit as we head through a Lacey once again.
19:46Yeah, this is the thing for Ugachiku.
19:50He wants to get by but he can't afford to get himself into an incident here because he only has
19:54one point over Slater who is right behind Tapanen up towards centre corner.
20:00Now on lap 6 of 19, we keep one eye on the leader as well because Niall is within a
20:05second of Lee who has put almost a second between himself and second place.
20:10He's doing a good job out front but let's see what Ugachiku can do down towards PK corner this time.
20:15He is right behind Le Corte, over the crest they come and Ugachiku almost can't see him tucked up behind
20:21Le Corte.
20:22And there comes the move down the inside at PK corner.
20:25Great stuff from Ugachiku and he is through on Le Corte.
20:28There's that blocked pass we saw from Jose Garfias, repeated by Ugachiku and it's a good effect.
20:33Is Le Corte going to go back to him now?
20:34I think Le Corte realises that the Campos is a stronger car at this stage.
20:38But Canato Lee, very impressive at the front of the field.
20:41He gaps nearly six tenths in that last lap by the end of the lap.
20:44I think it was eight tenths actually as they came just before the line.
20:47It was the middle sector that was so strong.
20:49Let's have a look at this move once again, an attempted move.
20:52Oh, it was a bit late.
20:53I think Le Corte just about held position there.
20:55Then they went side by side through two.
20:58Touch of wheels.
20:59Then Le Corte, oh, I don't know.
21:01I think that was probably a racing incident.
21:04They're lucky for both of them to get away with that.
21:05Could have been a puncture for Le Corte or a lost front wing or both.
21:08But they managed to fight on.
21:10Watch this wheel-to-wheel contact.
21:11This is as close as it gets, Chris.

21:17Just a tiny little bit of contact.
21:19That was just the sort of the foam that fills the front wing end plates.
21:23Then we went side by side with Yevon David and the 21 of James Wharton further down the order.

21:32Has gone past both the AIX cars of Barrichello and David who have also swapped positions.

21:46Just taking a slightly wider line through the final corner and down towards PK Corner now on lap eight of

21:56And we'll see him pull to the inside.

22:48The team, of course, are leading the team's championships and also, you know, team's champions as well previously.
22:54So they build a strong race car, but Kanato Lee, so far, not put a foot wrong.
22:59If he can continue to just get good exits, not make any mistakes, then he genuinely gives himself a chance
23:05at a win here.
23:05But we're not even halfway through yet, Chris.
23:07Trying to win their first driver's championship in FIA Formula 3.
23:12Rivera in third place.
23:13A little bit back from his teammate, but is he just thinking about tyres, as we've seen from the team?
23:17A quiet race so far for Freddie Slater, but I'm sure he's got one eye on that front row start

23:24Back towards Teofil Nile we go, and he's getting closer to Lee, who's just trying to break the tone now.

23:31Interesting that we heard from Uga Chukwu.
23:33Team Campos saying right now, look after tyres.
23:35They think tyres is going to be critical.
23:37What a bold move from Teofil Nile.
23:39What a move for the lead.

23:42Left it until he was in the breaking zone, and then he caught Kanato Lee out there.
23:46And so he goes into the lead.
23:48The driver, third place in the championship, in need of closing the gap points-wise to Freddie Slater.
23:54And Uga Chukwu so far, he now leads the race here at the Hungar Ring.
24:00Lee in second place, and then we've got Rivera in third.
24:03And now he is well within a second of Kanato Lee.
24:07I think that's where we could see one of the next moves.

24:13We're going to see a move, surely, from the American.

24:15We head in towards the newly renamed Driving Centre Chicane, where they hop over the kerbs.

24:44Yeah.
24:44Uga Chukwu has been making all his moves down towards the first corner.
24:49Could we see another one this time round?
24:51Just seeing Kilnaghi.
24:53Is he still within DRS of Rivera ahead?
24:56I think just about Kilnaghi.
25:00Now through the final corner we come onto the start-finish straight.
25:03And Uga Chukwu will be thinking about that move.
25:05It looks like Kilnaghi has kept the DRS to Rivera ahead.
25:10And now down the start-finish straight we go.
25:12Canato Lee staying with Teofil Nile.
25:14How about the move for fourth?
25:15Is it going to happen?
25:16No, not yet.
25:17Kilnaghi keeping within arm's length of Rivera.
25:21And so far that is keeping him that DRS.
25:23Canato Lee doing well to stay with Teofil Nile, at least for now.
25:27The second half of the race, or this sort of middle stage, is going to be about tyre management.
25:31Keeping your tyres alive and also saving a little bit for the end of the race when other drivers may
25:36fall away a little bit in terms of pace.
25:38But I think Uga Chukwu's pace is just too strong.
25:40He's closing up even through the long corners on the back of Kilnaghi, despite the aero watch that he'll be
25:44feeling.
25:45As we head towards turn five.
25:46Oh, Uga Chukwu thought about that, didn't he?
25:47He saw a little jink at this jingle.
25:49No way.

25:50Not around the outside of turn five.
25:51No.
25:52Uga Chukwu there.
25:53That's the kind of mood he's in in this sprint race.
25:57Trying to get by as quickly as possible.
25:59Does not want to waste any time.
26:01You can see Teofil Nile, his teammate, now leading the race.
26:04The driver, two places behind him in the standings.
26:07And he wants to get as many points over Freddy Slater today as possible.
26:12With Freddy Slater on the front row for tomorrow.
26:14Here they come now down in this extended DRS zone.
26:18And Lee's still within distance of Nile.
26:21But the battle surely is going to be for fourth place next time.
26:24Kalnaghi and Uga Chukwu.
26:25Yeah, surely the next move we're going to see is Uga Chukwu on Kalnaghi.
26:28Uga Chukwu two wheels on the dirt to the exit at turn 12.
26:31Not giving him the exit he would have wanted, which means he's slightly further back from Kalnaghi.
26:35Probably won't be able to affect a move this time by as Kalnaghi still has the DRS down towards turn
26:40one.
26:40A little bit wide, actually.
26:41So potentially Uga Chukwu just pushing a little bit hard at this stage of the race.
26:44He's falling backwards towards Baddowair now.
26:46Maybe he has taken too much out of his tyres, Chris.
26:49And he's under investigation as well for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
26:52We did see him leave the track on the opening lap.
26:55Did he gain an advantage from that is the question.
26:57We rode on board.
26:58I actually think he lost places.
26:59So if it's for that move, I think he should be about right from what I saw.
27:02But unless there was something that happened later on that we didn't catch.
27:06But we'll keep an eye on that and call it as we see it for now.
27:09But at the front of the field, it's Rivera that's starting to close in on Canato.
27:13Lee, these Campos cars looking strong, all three of them inside the top five positions.
27:18This race far from over.
27:19I think Rivera has just been waiting, hasn't he, a little bit, letting the laps go by.
27:25And now he's just catching Canato.
27:27Lee waiting to make his move.
27:30Here come the top four altogether.
27:32Ugochikwu, after that mistake through the final corner last time, has dropped back slightly from the top four.
27:38But I imagine he'll come back into that battle very quickly.
27:43Teofil now is not going to have this easy at all if he wants to keep this race, Lee.
27:47Let's not forget, Campos know what they're doing with this generation of Formula 3 car around here.
27:51They took the win in the sprint last year and also then second in the feature as well.
27:56So they know what they're doing.
27:57Last year was the first time that this generation, this iteration of Formula 3 car, new for 25, raced at
28:03this circuit.
28:04Everyone come back this year with a bit more knowledge.
28:06But Campos started and probably the best footing and have clearly taken even further steps forward for now.
28:11Keep an eye on Nicola LoCorte.
28:13It looks like he's got decent mid-race pace at the moment.
28:15He's the closest in the top ten to making a move now on the back of Brando Baduera in the
28:20blue Dams Lucasau car at the back of this train,
28:23turning into a bit of a three-horse race at the front of the field.
28:27Down towards the first corner, Kanato Lee there in second.
28:32Then we've got Ernesto Rivera in third, as you mentioned.
28:35Kornagi maybe just slightly dropping back now from that top three.
28:39And then we've got Ugochikwu, who's going to have to be looking in his mirrors now.
28:43The white and black road in a bad aware right behind him.
28:47LoCorte next, and it is a gap back to Tapanen in eighth place, who still has Slater behind him.
28:52James Wharton has joined that fight in tenth place now as they head uphill one more time.
28:58This lap, 12 of 19.
29:00Yeah, Ugochikwu's pace has sort of flowed away a little bit, dropping off the back.
29:05Whether this is now a bit of tyre management deliberately or whether this is something else, I'm not sure.
29:13Looks like the ART is a bit struggling, so yeah, let's keep the eyes open.
29:17We may have some opportunities towards the end, mate.
29:19All right, let's go.
29:22Five-second penalty for Ugochikwu for leaving the track and gaining an advantage.
29:27What a disaster for the championship leader.
29:30No confirmation on whether that is for what we saw on the first lap or whether it happened elsewhere.
29:35But nevertheless, the stewards have had a look at all the data and all the camera angles they have available
29:42to them.
29:42And they have decided it's a five-second penalty for Ugochikwu.
29:47All right, let's have a look then.
29:48We think this is what it might be on the first lap down the hill through turn three.
29:52Yeah, this is turn three, lap one.
29:55All right, we're on the outside of Tapanen.
29:57Did he hold on to the place?
29:59Let's have a look.
30:00Yeah, well, he's ahead of Tapanen, wasn't he?
30:01So, yeah, actually, basically coming from an offside position to put it in football terms there, I think.
30:05So, I can see that.
30:07I think that's harsh but fair.
30:10It's on the limit, isn't it?
30:12Because running wide through turn three didn't exactly do him any favours.
30:15But then he did gain a place into the next corner.
30:18So, I think that's exactly, I think you called that one exactly right there, Piers.
30:22And Ugochikwu will be very disappointed.
30:24Now, the news will filter back to him.
30:26And Slater in ninth place will essentially be ahead of him on the track.
30:31So, we could see a possible change in the championship lead now in this sprint race.
30:36Something we weren't expecting around two laps ago.
30:39But now Ugochikwu has that five-second penalty.
30:43Slater has a chance to go into the feature race tomorrow on the front row as the championship leader.
30:49Yeah, it drops at this stage with the gaps as they are.
30:51It would drop, as you mentioned, Ugochikwu just out of the points in with the AIX.
30:55I must say, good race so far from Fernando Barrichello.
30:57That's his best showing this season so far.
30:58One point away from, one place away from the points.
31:01But if he can stay within touch of Ugochikwu in terms of time,
31:04he may well pop himself and get his first point.
31:07Yeah.
31:08So far, he's three-tenths within going into the points.
31:13So, those driver standings you see at the bottom are set to change
31:16because Ugochikwu will drop out of the points.
31:19Freddie Slater will score three points and he will go into tomorrow two points ahead of Ugochikwu in the championship.
31:28And Campos will be giving that information to Ugochikwu now and telling him what you were doing at the start
31:34and being aggressive and getting your foot down.
31:37You're going to have to try and do that again.
31:38So, now the hard work begins for Ugochikwu.
31:41Well, effectively, this now turns into a time trial for Ugochikwu.
31:43Ugochikwu, he'll be basically looking to minimize time loss
31:47because if he overtakes anyone ahead of him, it doesn't make any difference.
31:50All he's worried about is opening the gap as much as he can
31:53to the drivers that are roughly five seconds behind him.
31:57So, he won't want to get into any scraps because, you know,
32:00you can make a mistake, lock up and lose a tenth.
32:02But if you get into a battle where you go backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards two or three times,
32:06you can lose seconds as we've now got more fighting with James Wharton and Fernando Barrichello.
32:11Barrichello attacking the back of Wharton, that's a great strength for Fernando Barrichello.
32:14He's really coming in to a strong run of form here.
32:17There's a circuit he knows, he's raced here in previous categories.
32:19Yeah, he got his first podium in the Euroformula Open here two years ago.
32:23So, he has good form around this circuit, not just the experience, but the form to go with it as
32:29well.
32:29And this would be a really big confidence boost for him if he can get his first points of the
32:34season.
32:35Yevon David, likewise, has a chance to go inside the points as well if they can get by James Wharton.
32:42And Ugo Ugochiku, as it stands, will drop back behind Yevon David as well, only just about.
32:48And we spoke about this before the race, Piers.
32:51Freddie Slater just keeping out of trouble, letting the race come to him almost.
32:56You can do more harm than good in a sprint race when you're fighting for the championship.
33:00We were chatting about this at breakfast this morning, weren't we, Chris, about Rafa Kamara, his championship run last season.
33:06Often wasn't that punchy, didn't feature that hugely in sprint races, but then would bank on it in feature races.
33:15Ultimately, the sprint race, yes, you do get points for him, but it's not as high scoring as yesterday.
33:20But you're just trying to stay out of trouble.
33:21And this is what Slater's done.
33:22He's actually net minus one on his grid slot, of course, because of those drivers that crashed.
33:26He's actually fallen behind Taternan, but he's still, just by staying out of trouble, gaining points.
33:31And then with other drivers and his championship rival getting into drama, is moving upwards in the championship.
33:37So it's a good tactic to stay out of trouble if you're a championship hopeful, starting towards the back end
33:41of the top ten.
33:42And I think that absolutely would have been the plan for him.
33:45Just go out there, stay in the top ten, and just let the race come to you.
33:50Things will happen ahead, no doubt about that, in a Formula 3 sprint race.
33:54And for Freddy Slater, if he can go and take the fastest lap now as well, we do award fastest
33:58lap points in Formula 3.
34:00That'll be a really big boost for him as well.
34:02Nicola LaCorte just having a little look down the inside at Badouer as we're into the final few laps of
34:09the race.
34:09They're all tucked up here behind Nukačuku.
34:12And Tapanen very suddenly has caught them.
34:14And I think Slater will be on his way to join them as well.
34:17And here comes another attempted move from LaCorte, trying to get by Badouer, trying to replicate the attempted pass.
34:24We saw Ugachuku do on him earlier in the race.
34:27And now they have the pole sitter for tomorrow right behind.
34:30That move into turn nine of the Budapest chicane is a risky one, high risk, and very rarely pays off.
34:37So it's kind of a last-lap-ditch attempt.
34:39And how often do we see drivers attempt it and then lose momentum and then fall backwards to the drivers
34:43behind?
34:44But LaCorte looking racy.
34:45Every braking zone, he's ducking to the inside, showing himself in the mirrors of Badouer.
34:49Clearly got good grip at this stage.
34:50We were on board with Badouer one lap ago in this corner, the final corner, the sheesh.
34:54And his front left tyre was looking in a pretty, pretty bad way.
34:57It was draining a lot.
34:58And potentially now as well with Ugachuku, his tyre's not looking great either.
35:02Those Dam's Lucasaw tyres looking a bit better than the drivers ahead.
35:05We're going to see a move here from LaCorte.
35:07Or Badouer, in fact, there he goes.
35:09Big send on the championship leader and contact between LaCorte and Ugachuku,
35:14who was trying to get the undercut on Badouer and came straight into the path of LaCorte,
35:18who will be very disappointed with that.
35:20Tapanen has now gone by him.
35:22LaCorte trying to fight back into turn two.
35:25And Freddy Slater is seeing this all go off just ahead of him.
35:28And he's ready to pick up the pieces.
35:30Ugachuku's been lucky a couple of times.
35:32That's more contact with Nicola LaCorte this race.
35:34I would say, actually, that wasn't really on Ugachuku there.
35:37LaCorte just driving into a space that was always going to close there
35:40as it was a big move from Badouer.
35:42Good move, actually.
35:43But on the attempted cutback, LaCorte touched his nose at the inside.
35:48Again, both lucky to get away with that
35:49because that could easily have spun them around LaCorte's suspension damage.
35:52Let's have a look back at it then, Piers. Talk us through this one.
35:54Yeah, we're looking backwards now from Ugachuku towards Badouer.
35:57Badouer goes for the lunge.
35:58Then LaCorte, I think, was actually sizing up a move on Badouer.
36:01And then Bosh up the inside.
36:03To be fair to LaCorte, he actually ducked out of that and went onto the grass,
36:07sacrificing himself somewhat.
36:09But he just put himself in a position that was risky.
36:12I'd say, actually, Ugachuku first lap was very aware of everyone around him.
36:15That time, a little bit unaware.
36:16He should have known that LaCorte potentially was close enough
36:19to have potentially been there.
36:20Didn't see him in the mirrors.
36:21But, you know, easy for given.
36:23There's such small mirrors on these F3 cars
36:25that when one driver goes up the inside,
36:27you're preoccupied with watching them.
36:29You can't keep abreast of everything.
36:30Teo DiPaolo's difficulty to continue this weekend.
36:33False start penalty for him from the back there.
36:37That's just DiPaolo's last couple of rounds have really not been going well.
36:42Meanwhile, let's go back to the points.
36:43And we can see Barrichello making his way further inside them now,
36:48trying to get by James Wharton, who comes over to defend.
36:51Oh, huge lock-up.
36:52You can hear it there from Wharton there.
36:54Just about gets stopped in time.
36:56And Barrichello now in behind.
36:58Meanwhile, Tapanen trying to go by Ugachuku,
37:00and he's going to take it around the outside there.
37:03Good stuff from Tapanen.
37:05And that is a further place gain.
37:07Remember, Ugachuku has a five-second penalty in this race as well.
37:11So they'll want to get by him as quickly as possible.
37:14Right.
37:14So we're seeing on the right-hand side,
37:15Kanato Lee getting some encouragement from the team.
37:17Push now.
37:18Let's go again now.
37:19Maybe they were playing the long game,
37:20waiting for the tyres to be good at the end.
37:23And we've seen the opposite from Ugachuku,
37:25normally so careful in the first few laps
37:28and then comes good at the end.
37:29He was pushing on hard, making moves.
37:31Maybe that's why he's falling away at this stage of the race.
37:33You push the tyres too hard with track temperature at 42 degrees now.
37:37Maybe that just means that you're vulnerable at the end of the race.
37:39Well, Kanato Lee has to start getting a move on, really,
37:43because look at that behind.
37:45It's Ernesto Rivera trying to get himself ahead of Kanato Lee
37:50up towards the penultimate turn.
37:52We come now.
37:54And Kanato Lee two seconds back from Niles.
37:56So this could be an opportunity this time round
38:00down the start finish straight for Ernesto Rivera.
38:02He'll have the DRS.
38:03Kanato Lee won't.
38:04And will Rivera be able to drive into an open door
38:07down at the first corner.
38:08Kanato Lee straight away weaving to try and break the toe
38:12to Rivera behind.
38:13But Rivera getting closer and closer.
38:16And are we going to see him dip out down the inside
38:18right at the apex?
38:19No, but he'll have another chance down to Hamilton corner.

38:25But the disadvantage of that is you get dirt in your tyres
38:27is now at the inside, the 21.
38:29That's James Wharton going past Louis Sharp and Ugachuku.
38:32Oh, that's a bit of tactical driving there, I think,

38:36He didn't need to slow down that much.
38:37I think potentially just trying to force Slater,
38:41his direct championship rival, to fall backwards.
38:43And it's worked.
38:44He's lost two positions.
38:45Yeah, not a bad spot, that one.
38:47Freddie Slater now right behind Ugachuku.
38:50And all of a sudden, Freddie Slater
38:52is only going to be scoring one point in this race.
38:56Ugachuku coming up towards turn four now.
38:59This would put them level on points in this race.

39:05but it will then go to the fastest lap within the top ten.
39:08Don't know who that currently is with,
39:10but Freddie Slater, as you mentioned,
39:12has now dropped back a little bit.
39:14And as it stands, we'll score just one point,
39:17putting them level on points.
39:19Yeah, of course, Ugachuku occupying
39:20the final points-paying position,
39:22but with that time penalty,
39:23will fall well down the order.
39:25But Ugachuku's not fighting for points.
39:26He's fighting to take points off Slater.
39:29And the tactical driving, the gamesmanship,
39:30has worked perfectly on this lap.
39:32Very good heads-up driving.
39:33I don't think Slater and Trident
39:34will be particularly happy with that.
39:36But nothing to say that you can't do it
39:39as long as it's done safely.
39:40And the gap extending to Barrichello ahead, isn't it?
39:43And I don't think that's all down to huge tyre
39:46where for Ugachuku and Slater
39:48will just want to get by him now
39:49because look at the queue that is formed behind.
39:51This goes all the way...
39:53I won't even try to work it out.
39:54It just goes all the way to the back of the field,
39:55I think.
39:56It does.
39:56So Slater now going on to the final lap.
39:59Cannot afford to get himself into an incident here.
40:02Just has to go by Ugachuku if he can.
40:06If not, he'll be happy to sit behind
40:07and not let anyone else through.
40:09And you can see there just showing himself
40:12to the inside of Ugachuku.
40:13But he's going to stay behind for the time being.
40:15And Yev and David trying to hold off Louis Sharp behind.
40:18Yeah, Slater will do well just to stay out of trouble.
40:21He can't really control what Ugachuku's going to do.
40:23But he can control whether he gets a penalty
40:26or not towards the end of this race.
40:28Because ultimately, one point, great.
40:29Yes, it closes the gaps of almost nothing
40:31to Ugachuku for tomorrow.
40:32But it would be more costly
40:34if he ended up getting into an altercation
40:36on this final lap
40:37that then affected his second-place grid start tomorrow.
40:40All of this going very well for Teofil Niall.
40:44Seeing the fact that Freddie Slater
40:46is on to just score one point,
40:48Ugachuku will score none.
40:50Teofil Niall is set to score 10 for the win.
40:53Tapanen has just taken the fastest lap,
40:55so he'll take the extra point for that
40:57as they head their way through the chicane
40:59for the final time in this race.

45:10And that certainly keeps him in the hunts for this title.
