00:10ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:43Lewis Hamilton, an eight-time winner and nine-time pole sitter here,
00:48went quickest in Friday practice.
00:50FP1, though, was topped by his team-mate,
00:53so Ferrari are the ones to beat here at the Hungara ring.
00:57The margins are as tight as the track itself, though.
01:00To put it on pole, you've got to get everything right
01:03because this is a circuit that demands precision.
01:06So just one more hour of practice to build that rhythm ahead of qualifying.
01:12A very warm welcome, then, from Jamie Chadwick and I
01:15to the paddock here in Hungary, and it's a glorious day.
01:18We thought it was a little bit cool coming into the weekend,
01:20but it's ramped up, and at the moment at least feels like the wind's dropped a little bit.
01:26It definitely feels better than yesterday.
01:28Yesterday the wind was higher.
01:29Well, the temperature itself was a bit lower as well.
01:32So conditions today feel better, a little bit more what we know of Hungary of previous.
01:36I think the track 10 being even higher is maybe a worse thing for the drivers.
01:40We saw a lot of them suffering with overheating, especially in the last sector.
01:44So that's always been a factor here, and as the sun comes out,
01:47as we've seen, that never helps situation.
01:49But the wind being lower, I think, will help quite a bit.
01:51Yesterday it was gusty. It was on and off.
01:53It was difficult for the drivers and the teams to kind of work out
01:55what was the wind, what was everything else.
01:57There were so many different factors making it hard work for the drivers,
01:59but I guess that's what we want to see,
02:01and that's what's going to make it difficult for the drivers to put it on pole today.
02:04Absolutely. Well, it's a great circuit,
02:06one that seems to be very popular with the drivers.
02:09You've won here. What does it take?
02:11I mean, I think it's a popular circuit with the drivers that go well here.
02:14Not everyone loves it, but if you do enjoy it,
02:16and you do love it and you go well here, then it's a great circuit.
02:19It's kind of got a little bit of everything in it.
02:21It's kind of a go-kart track grown in a way.
02:24There's a lot of sort of fast-flowing sections,
02:26a lot of medium-speed corners where it's kind of combined entries,
02:29and if you've got the car working, it's great.
02:30If you don't, it's a real handful,
02:32and I think that's one of the nice things about it
02:34is getting everything together for that one lap,
02:36and in qualifying, it's going to be very difficult.
02:38I think this year we've seen quite a big difference,
02:40obviously, with how the cars behave around here
02:42with the different characteristics of this year's regulations
02:45versus last year's regulations,
02:47and as a result, it's hard work for everyone.
02:49So, yeah, I think some teams seem to be more on top of it than others.
02:53Ferrari, of course, looking very strong yesterday,
02:55whereas others maybe a little bit more on the back foot.
02:57Well, Lewis Hamilton certainly loves it around here.
02:59He's won eight times, nine times on pole.
03:02What chance of him making it a tenth later today?
03:05He topped the timesheets yesterday.
03:07Interestingly, he said he needed to step things up after Belgium,
03:11thinking that he could and should have potentially won there
03:14and, indeed, at Silverstone,
03:16two circuits that don't necessarily lend themselves
03:18to the characteristics of his Ferrari.
03:21What about here?
03:22Absolutely.
03:23I mean, well, firstly, we're talking about Lewis, in a way,
03:25being a threat to Mercedes.
03:27If you look at Mercedes' reliability issues,
03:29yes, they've so far had the outright pace
03:31to be dominating this championship,
03:32but Ferrari are very much there
03:34and picking up the pieces when things go wrong,
03:35and we know how good the Ferrari chassis is.
03:37So then you come to a track like this,
03:39which is chassis dominant,
03:40it's less power sensitive than a circuit like Spa,
03:43and really, on paper,
03:45everything should fall into their laps, in a way,
03:48and I think for Lewis and Charles, in a way,
03:50it's a track they both go well at.
03:51So you've kind of got that added confidence.
03:53He knows he's got it within him this year.
03:55He's been qualifying a lot better than he did last year.
03:57The car suits him.
03:59The team are working a lot better than they did last year,
04:01and it gives sort of all the signs pointing in the direction.
04:04I can't believe the stat that it was 2023,
04:06his last pole position,
04:07and it gives all the kind of right signs
04:09that he can maybe get ahead of that
04:12and get pole position today.
04:13And actually, momentum, it feels at least,
04:15to be the moment with his teammate
04:17having a great result winning at Silverstone
04:19and then again on the podium last weekend.
04:22He has put it on pole.
04:23It hasn't won here.
04:25What about his chances?
04:26Yeah, I mean, last year was a messy race
04:28for them as a team.
04:29They were sort of battling all sorts of issues
04:30with trying to manage the ride height
04:33to not have an illegal plank at the end of the race.
04:35So I think they know what not to do here.
04:37It's very different this year.
04:38And I think between them, it's interesting
04:40because this year as a whole,
04:41we've seen the sort of differences
04:43between the two teammates.
04:44And as general, well, generally speaking,
04:48whoever's struggling has been a bit lost with,
04:50is it driving style?
04:51Is it, you know, something with the way
04:52the cars are with the deployment?
04:54What is the reason to,
04:55it's a difficulty to get on top of these cars?
04:58And as we think that,
04:59Charles then goes and has a great last two races.
05:02So I think they're getting on top of it now.
05:04We're getting to the midpoint of the season.
05:05They're all starting to understand
05:06these cars a lot better,
05:08get the most out of them.
05:09And then a track like this
05:10that is a favorite for Charles and Lewis,
05:13they seem to be right out front.
05:14Okay, let's hear from some other drivers now,
05:15then starting with Charles.
05:18Yeah, it was a relatively strong day.
05:20From the beginning,
05:21I felt quite good with the car
05:22and performance seemed to be good
05:25from the straight, straight away.
05:27So that's a good thing.
05:28But the weekend is still long.
05:30From the Friday to the Saturday,
05:32we see teams making a jump of performance.
05:36Normally, we are on the back foot on the Friday,
05:38so it's a good thing that we have a good Friday.
05:41but we still need to stay on it
05:42and work hard in order to get better for tomorrow.
05:45I think the Ferraris have looked very quick
05:47in both sessions,
05:48but I think Lando looked competitive
05:50in that one especially.
05:52And yeah, I think the Mercedes is very hard to read.
05:56So yeah, let's wait and see tomorrow.
05:58But I think if we execute a good day,
06:00then it seems like they can be a lot up for grabs.
06:03Very tricky FP2.
06:04I thought FP1 was tough enough.
06:06It got worse in FP2.
06:08BF wins.
06:11So yeah, how to get a proper read
06:12with the changes we made.
06:15It seems like, I mean, the car is working okay.
06:17It's just that the Ferrari are way stronger.
06:20So we've got, yeah,
06:23quite a bit of lap time tonight.
06:25Long run seemed pretty good,
06:27but that one lap pace we're lacking.
06:29Yeah, this weekend is a totally different beast.
06:30You know, it's,
06:32these power units are pretty impressive
06:33on this short track,
06:35having sort of 350 kilowatts
06:36out of all of the corners
06:38and the rear tires are getting blasted around the lap.
06:42So as I said,
06:43we've got work to do as a team.
06:44Ferrari are a good step ahead of everyone right now.
06:49How do you think George will be feeling
06:50coming into this weekend?
06:51Obviously a really tough time
06:53having that first lap crash in Belgium.
06:55Having had a decent race at Silverstone,
06:58this is a circuit that isn't energy starved.
07:00So deployment isn't going to be an issue.
07:02That's been a headache
07:02that he's had for some time.
07:04It's a completely different proposition for him though.
07:06It is.
07:07It's been a sort of rollercoaster of a season for George.
07:09And even in a way for Kimi,
07:11I think reliability,
07:13a lot of these different factors
07:14haven't made it plain sailing for either driver.
07:16But for George especially,
07:17I think, you know,
07:19we've kind of been through that journey with him
07:20of is it his driving style?
07:22Is it this?
07:22Is it that?
07:22He's not used to being in the position
07:24where a teammate has been
07:26as strong as Kimi has against him.
07:27And so it's been tough.
07:29They feel like they found the bottom
07:30or got to the bottom of the software issue
07:32that was causing the biggest issue
07:34which we saw in Spa.
07:35And it might have been affecting as well Silverstone
07:36and then as well Red Bull rings.
07:38So in that sense,
07:40I think he can put his mind at rest
07:41and he can know that, you know,
07:42his team, and he mentioned it as well,
07:44his team is doing everything that they can
07:45to give him the best car possible.
07:47But the challenge is,
07:48is for whatever reason,
07:50although the car has been dominant this year,
07:53coming to a track like this,
07:54it doesn't seem to be as strong.
07:55And I think Ferrari do look
07:57to be a step ahead of the rest.
07:58That said, I think yesterday was a very different day
07:59to what we're going to see today.
08:01And a lot of the issues that they had yesterday,
08:03I'm sure they're on top of
08:04and it'll be a lot closer today.
08:06Well, there were issues for everyone
08:07because they were grappling
08:08with all sorts of conditions.
08:09As we've touched on,
08:10the wind was a particular factor
08:11and indeed the track itself.
08:14This is Colopinto coming into the last corner.
08:17Yeah, so he, in the transition phase
08:19between turning out of the penultimate corner
08:21into the final corner,
08:23wasn't the first one to lose the rear there.
08:24He lost it very early,
08:25which meant he had no chance
08:26to try and get or recover the car.
08:29He's a bit of a passenger into the barriers.
08:31But a lot of the drivers
08:32talking about this last corner,
08:33especially turn one, big bump as well.
08:36It just looks incredibly low grip.
08:38So the Budapest we know and love
08:41is a high grip circuit
08:42and one of the drivers
08:43can have a lot of confidence
08:44to throw a lot of speed into the corners.
08:46The Budapest we saw yesterday
08:47wasn't so much like that.
08:48So it's this trade-off
08:49and this balance of
08:50you don't want to make a mistake,
08:51you want to gather the data,
08:52you don't want to have
08:53the situation the Franco had,
08:54but you've got qualifying later
08:56and you've got to find the limits.
08:57So it's going to be a challenge for everyone.
08:59Talking of that big bump at turn one,
09:01they've been doing a bit of work on it overnight.
09:03So we're expecting,
09:04hoping at least,
09:05that it will be a bit easier today.
09:06What do you think?
09:07I mean, we hope.
09:09I've seen tracks
09:10where they've done that before.
09:11It's very difficult
09:12to decipher exactly where the bump is,
09:14the profile of the bump,
09:15to then flatten the bump accordingly.
09:17I mean, these cars are so sensitive.
09:19If you were to look at the bump,
09:21visually,
09:21you probably wouldn't even see it as such.
09:23And then suddenly an F1 car
09:24goes over it this far off the ground
09:26and it's incredibly challenging.
09:28So let's see.
09:29They'll find out today.
09:30There's obviously,
09:31you know,
09:31been support races
09:32that were out earlier in the day
09:33and seem to have less issues at turn one.
09:36Issues elsewhere on the track
09:37where the track looked actually very dirty.
09:38So yeah,
09:39still a challenge this track.
09:41Okay, well,
09:41five rookies stepped in in FP1,
09:44which meant five regular racers
09:46had to sit the session out,
09:48including Kimi Antonelli.
09:50They're all keen to get back out there
09:51for this final hour of practice.
09:54So let's head up then
09:55to our commentators,
09:56Anthony Davidson and David Croft.
10:15You got it.
10:18I understand.
10:22Okay.
10:22Bye.
10:25Bye.
10:27Bye.
10:28Bye.
10:33Bye.
10:34Bye.
10:36Bye.
10:36Bye.
10:38Bye.

45:59So he's now...
46:00The 1.19.8 was, yes.
46:02So he was 4th.
46:04But yeah, it has been.
46:05And it's now, has now had that time deleted.
46:07So the question is, is it the car with all of those overnight improvements that Mercedes have made,
46:14courtesy of Fred Vestey telling us there,
46:16or is it Kimi not quite getting it in?
46:19And the answer I have for you so far, it's Kimi.
46:22Is that Team Radio or just text?
46:24No, just a text.
46:25Okay, so Kimi has come back into the pit box at Mercedes.
46:29He's been offered a quick front wing change.
46:32He's turned it down.
46:34He's cooled his tyres and he's gone again.
46:36So I think after you see Leclerc,
46:38then maybe you'll get Kimi a more representative time.
46:41By the way, we have a new entrant into the Guild of Pit Reporters.
46:45Oh, who's that?
46:46Something Anthony Davidson has turned down in the past,
46:48but Bernie Collins and Karun of Chandock have accepted.
46:51It's a prestigious guild.
46:52Yeah, they've accepted their cards.
46:53And we've had other racing drivers being members of the Guild of Pit Reporters,
46:56likes of Ralph Schumacher, Juan Pablo Montoya,
46:59and the newest member of the Guild of Pit Reporters, Dorianne Pan.
47:03The last year's F1 Academy Championship winner.
47:07She is joining me down in the pit lane as a pit reporter for French TV.
47:11Welcome to the Guild of Pit Reporters, Dorianne.
47:14C'est magnifique, as they might say, in the French department of the Guild.
47:19Brilliant.
47:20Nose or onions?
47:22Absolutely.
47:23Superb reporter, Dorianne Pan, and a fine driver too.
47:27Charles Leclerc, fastest in the middle sector.
47:29Saw Max Verstappen do that,
47:31and then maybe run out of grip a little bit towards the end of the lap.
47:33Is Charles Leclerc experiencing familiar feelings?
47:37Certainly looks like it,
47:38but crosses the line with nearly four tenths in hand on his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
47:43And Antonelli on his second attempt now, much, much closer.
47:46This is where we thought the performance should be or could be from Mercedes,
47:52and particularly with Antonelli, who ran wide in that turn four over the curbs.
47:56As we saw, that lap was deleted, but he'd crossed the line still around seven tenths away, despite that massive
48:02error.
48:02So where's that putting him? Second at this point.
48:05Only a tenth and a half away now.
48:06This is where we thought they would be in comparison to Ferrari.
48:11Meanwhile, what's Russell been up to?
48:13A huge lockup in towards turn one.
48:15And like you said, it's been ground down that surface and there to try and mitigate the bumps,
48:20but drivers still finding it very tricky.
48:23And I think, like Fred Vestie was saying,
48:25with the wind flipped almost 180 from yesterday,
48:29you've lost that nice headwind down towards turn one.
48:32That's going to make it harder to slow the car down.
48:34Obviously, a lot more downforce into a headwind,
48:37as if the air flows over the car even faster.
48:40Well, we saw Charles Leclerc making his way to turn one.
48:44I think it was Alex Albon ahead of him had a big lockup
48:47because there was a massive cloud of smoke down there.
48:52This is the corner.
48:53A headwind is absolutely beautiful
48:55as you're heading downhill into a very heavy braking zone.
48:59Headwind, gorgeous.
49:00Tailwind, not nice.
49:02And that's why I think, but you get used to that grip from yesterday
49:05with the car feeling grippy under the braking
49:07and then also into turn four.
49:09If it was a headwind into turn one,
49:12when you get into the apex of turn four,
49:14you're back into that headwind.
49:16And I think that's what caught Kimi out on his first attempt.
49:19And also Lawson as well.
49:21So you readjusted that as you go.
49:24So Liam Lawson, one of only five drivers
49:28that have run the medium compound tyre in this session.
49:31Everyone else running the softs
49:33and focusing very much on the qualifying performance.
49:36Slightly different strategy at Racing Bulls.
49:39And both Lawson and Arvid Lindblad
49:42with power unit changes going back to the Spa unit
49:45as a precaution after they'd seen a few things
49:49they didn't like in the data
49:50when they were firing up.
49:53Carlos Sainz has just put in his best lap
49:55and gone P18 only as a result of it.
49:59We still haven't got a tie-in from Arvid Lindblad.
50:02Sergio Perez stopped by the side of the track
50:04with what we think was a rear brake issue.
50:07Certainly they caught fire
50:09and when he came to a standstill
50:10they had to get the...
