00:00МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:41We're into the second half of the season now,
00:44round nine of Formula 2
00:45and a completely different challenge this weekend
00:48as we come to the Hungar ring.
00:5045 minutes of practice
00:52and the drivers having to get used to
00:55what was a very tricky circuit out there,
00:58particularly through the final corner.
00:59Lots of that, as we saw from Alex Dunn.
01:01Big incident for Mari Boyer,
01:03who locked up going down to turn one
01:05and went off into the barriers,
01:06bringing out the red flag.
01:08And that was one of the big talking points of the session.
01:11Drivers locking up down to that first corner.
01:14But fastest overall for Dam's Lucas Oil
01:16was Dino Beganovic with a 130.7,
01:20just 15,000 ahead of Gabriele Mini.
01:23Nico Verone, his debut at the circuit,
01:26but he was P3, championship leader Nikola Solov fourth,
01:29and our pole sitter and feature race winner from last time out,
01:32Rafa Kamra fifth,
01:33who's looking to make it three consecutive poles this season.
01:38But there you can see the look at the circuit.
01:40There is now an additional DRS zone
01:42just to the right of screen there.
01:43That takes you downhill from 11 to 12,
01:46and then we have the DRS zone coming down to turn one,
01:50also down to turn two as well.
01:53So that will be in use throughout the session
01:56and particularly tomorrow as well.
01:59There's a look at the pit lane.
02:00We've got 30 minutes to decide
02:02who's going to start on a pole position.
02:04My name, Chris McCarthy,
02:06Piers Pryor alongside me for this weekend.
02:08We are live, cars heading out of the pit lane now.
02:11Seems camera just waiting back there slightly
02:14with the Invicta team.
02:15Yeah, we've got plenty of time in this session,
02:17half an hour just to set, effectively,
02:19two laps, a banker and a flyer.
02:21Two sets of the softer compound tyre
02:24from Pirelli this weekend,
02:25along with the prime, medium compound,
02:28which we'll see coming out in the races.
02:30Well, at least one of the races.
02:32And the drivers are coming out on circuit.
02:35The additional DRS zone down towards turn 12.
02:39We don't expect to see much additional overtaking
02:42into turn 12 from that DRS zone,
02:44but it will allow drivers to get a bit closer
02:45into that final sector
02:47to potentially give us more overtaking opportunities
02:49down to this, turn one,
02:50the main overtaking opportunity on the lap.
02:52And you can see on the right-hand side of the shot,
02:54left-hand side of circuit,
02:56is plenty of straight-line tyre marks on the circuit
03:00where drivers in F2, F1 and F3
03:03have been locking up as soon as they hit the brakes,
03:06either both front tyres or the right front tyre.
03:07You saw there in the little practice highlights,
03:10Marie Boyer finding the barrier pretty heavily
03:12at turn one after a double front lock-up.
03:14We then saw similar issues for Carlos Sainz,
03:16who just about missed the barrier in Formula 1,
03:18and then a few of the F3 drivers as well.
03:20So they'll all have seen that.
03:22They will all have seen that.
03:23The teams will have been onto the drivers saying,
03:24look, there's less grip on the braking zone at turn one.
03:26There's a bump there right where you're braking.
03:28Just a bit of extra caution,
03:30especially on that first flying lap in the qualifying session
03:33coming up,
03:34because if you don't get that banker in,
03:37you run over track limits or you lock up and run wide,
03:39there's a lot of pressure on that final run in qualifying.
03:42And how many times have we seen drivers
03:44not able to then get a lap that they want
03:46in that final part of the session?
03:47As you talked about F1 there,
03:50we had Colton Herta out for Cadillac in FP1,
03:54and speak of the devil, there he is.
03:55His second appearance in a free practice session this season.
04:00Likewise at Barcelona,
04:02where he got his best qualifying results so far.
04:05We also had our reigning champion out there for McLaren,
04:07Leo Fornaroli, Paul Aaron,
04:09Frederic Vesti out there as well.
04:10So Colton Herta's got the challenge, Piers,
04:12of jumping from an F1 car back to an F2 car.
04:15That's right, Colton.
04:16We don't think you're the devil.
04:17It's fine.
04:19Speak of Formula 1 Cadillac junior driver.
04:22And he showed up here.
04:23But no, it's great to see more of our Formula 2 talent
04:25getting opportunities in Formula 1 there,
04:27where they aspire to be in the next year or years to come.
04:30And that's another one of the drivers
04:31that's hoping to see himself in a Formula 1 car
04:34a lot more going forward as Nikola Solov.
04:36There's been some rumours around the paddock
04:38that maybe he might get an opportunity, maybe not.
04:40We'll see.
04:40But all he's concentrating on now
04:42is trying to nail his F2 season
04:46as we've got some very close running.
04:48Yes, Stenshawn there.
04:49With Stenshawn in preparation to the first lap.
04:53Well, Rafa Camara here.
04:56Ferrari junior, someone who has his eyes
04:58certainly on moving up as well.
05:00But let's hear what he has to say
05:02about qualifying coming into this weekend.
05:07I think you just need to concentrate on yourself,
05:11getting a clean track for your lap.
05:15Like I said, traffic here,
05:16you don't really gain anything with the toes,
05:18so you want to be out of traffic.
05:21And, yeah, let's see tomorrow what will happen.
05:26But, yeah, quite positive that we can do a good job
05:29and a good weekend.
05:34A camera we can see has just come out there
05:37on a set of medium tyres, Piers,
05:39gone round and come back in.
05:41And we've seen lots of drivers just done similar.
05:43They've gone out, gone round and come back in.
05:46Just explain to us what the tactic is behind doing this.
05:50Well, they may well just be getting the sheen off the tyres
05:54if they were brand new when they went out.
05:55Just getting a feel for it.
05:57We saw a lot of brake blanking as well.
05:59So there was some tape, some coloured tape,
06:01on the brake ducts that they will then rip off,
06:03potentially bedding a new set of pads as well.
06:05We know we've got time in this F2 session.
06:08A little bit less compact than the Formula 3 qualifying session
06:10that we had earlier on,
06:12as we expect them all to do just the one,
06:14no, just the two, sorry, flying laps.
06:16We're getting into the first, those flying laps now
06:18with camera's teammate Joshua Dirksen,
06:22who is going to be looking ahead to this weekend.
06:25Good weekend last weekend in terms of results
06:27for the Invicta team.
06:28They were strong here last year,
06:29one, two in the feature, weren't they as well?
06:31So they're a team that are looking to replicate that this season.
06:34And Dirksen pushing on through the end of the first sector downhill.
06:37We now head up towards turn four.
06:39Four wins in the last four visits for the Invicta team.
06:42One of those wins coming from Cushmine,
06:44the only current driver to have won round here in Formula 2.
06:48And we also saw Alex Dunn take a podium finish last season as well.
06:54Joshua Dirksen, the number two there,
06:55winning the sprint race last time out,
06:57heading through the chicane now.
06:58This is his first flying lap.
07:00We've got Van Hoopen also out there on a flying lap.
07:03And purple through the first sector, Piers, is Olly Gertha.
07:05Yeah, Olly Gertha going quickly so far.
07:08I don't think that everyone's at full, full pace at the moment.
07:12Although they're saying that,
07:13Dirksen absolutely on the limit of grip and the limit of track limits.
07:16He's looked like he just about kept a wheel
07:17clinging on by its fingernails to the track there
07:20as he's sliding his way through turn two as well.
07:22Purple for now, but it doesn't mean a huge amount
07:24because not many drivers have done a representative lap time so far.
07:27We'll keep an eye on how that's going.
07:28Van Hoopen going all right.
07:30And that's exactly the mistake that we saw Dirksen make
07:34at the start of practice.
07:36And then we saw Kammerer do it later
07:38in practice.
07:38And then once again, clearly that Invicta
07:40has a lot of front end into that front end grip
07:43into that last corner because we've seen
07:44a number of drivers, well, him and Kammerer's teammates
07:47nearly swap ends on the way in there.
07:49Fastest first lap, Bennett, but Gertha goes quicker.
07:52Olly Gertha going quicker then.
07:54Still catching my breath back after that Dirksen slide
07:57as I'm sure many people are.
07:59That would have made a lot of noise down at that final corner.
08:02Let's watch Alex Dunn for Rodin Motorsport up to the line.
08:05P3 in the standings currently.
08:07Nikola Solov, though, championship leader, going even quicker.
08:10Dino Viganovic was fastest in practice earlier.
08:13Currently fastest in this session.
08:15Now Nikola Solov is going to take his first stab
08:18at a flying lap out of the final corner and up to the line.
08:21And he goes quickest by almost two tenths.
08:24How about Roman Bilinski?
08:25Qualified well last weekend.
08:27P4 for him.
08:28Just behind his teammate.
08:29And now we go to Mini.
08:30We've jumped on board with Gabriele Mini,
08:32the driver that's trying to keep in touch with Nikola Solov in the championship.
08:36We joined him on board as he was having a smaller but similar oversteer moment
08:40into the last corner.
08:42That's something we've seen a lot of this weekend.
08:44It's lockups down towards turn one and then oversteer into turn 14.
08:48Let's have a look through turn 11 on the absolute ragged edge of Gritman.
08:51And yep, just about keeping one tire on the white line.
08:54You must have one part of your car on or within the white lines.
08:58And then that was the mistake there.
08:59You could see as soon as he turned in on the brakes,
09:01just asking a bit too much of the car there all at once
09:04as he brake turned into the corner in the uphill entry to turn 14.
09:08And the rear said, no, no, I haven't got anything left
09:10after you slid me through turn 11.
09:12Yeah, and it's been a mistake we've seen being repeated by drivers
09:18into that final corner.
09:20Camera and Dirksen made pretty much the same mistake, didn't they,
09:24in practice earlier.
09:26And Camera having done just that one reconnaissance laugh, if you like,
09:30on a set of medium tires has come back in.
09:32Noel Leon is saving his time in this qualifying session as well.
09:36As are a few drivers there, I guess, looking to go the opposite way
09:40and try and get some clear track.
09:42Yeah, it's going to be a game of trying to find some clear track.
09:45I think we'll get pretty congested towards the end of this session, though,
09:48because the track, in theory, will be getting quicker and quicker as every lap goes on.
09:53It's a lap cleaner, lap less dust, a lap more of Pirelli's rubber
09:56on the surface of the tarmac for the Pirelli tires to stick to.
10:00As Dirksen going for another flying lap.
10:02So, seeing if these Pirelli soft tires have got two flying laps in them,
10:06let's keep an eye on the times.
10:06If we see green sectors from Dirksen, that says to me that we may be seeing dual lap runs.
10:13It's unusual for the Pirelli soft tire to be able to do two flying laps and qualifying
10:17and continue to improve, but also burning down the fuel,
10:19because no refueling during this qualifying session.
10:23They'll start with an amount of fuel that the engineers have calculated
10:26and they'll run the number of laps that they want to run
10:29so that they end the session with only just enough fuel.
10:31Olly Gertha, like last time, has gone quickest of anyone through the first sector.
10:3631.7, three tenths quicker than the driver you're seeing on screen
10:39and the others currently out there on a flying lap as well.
10:43Joshua Dirksen will set the banker through the second sector for us on this second run as well.
10:48Once again, they're on the limit of track limits.
10:51Absolutely no lack of commitment from Joshua Dirksen today so far.
10:55We saw this turn 11 last time by that he was on the edge of grip.
10:58He was on the edge of grip on the exit turn 9 as well.
11:00Definitely not improving on this lap, so just running down the fuel, I think, by this stage.
11:04Dirksen, seven tenths off.
11:06He may well even duck into the pits depending on what his run plan is.
11:08Goethe was fastest in one, which is possible, I think,
11:13if your tyres aren't quite as good as their first run,
11:17because it is effectively just two corners, really.
11:19But the middle sector, where you've got the 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,
11:23back to back to back to back, the tyres have done one run already,
11:26then they're unlikely to be able to match the grip they had in the first lap.
11:29Oli Goerth over the line, P6 for him.
11:32Let's see what Alex Duncan do.
11:34He's improving through the first two sectors.
11:36Wants to get in the top ten, and we'll come back to that in just a second.
11:39Let's see him over the line first.
11:41Here comes the Irishman P7.
11:43If you're new to Formula 2, a welcome to you.
11:45In the sprint race tomorrow, the top ten will be reversed.
11:50So that would mean, if it finished as it is,
11:53John Bennett would start on pole for the lower-scoring sprint race tomorrow,
11:57where no compulsory pit stops are required.
11:59You get ten points for a win,
12:01then full 25 Grand Prix points available in the feature race on Sunday.
12:06And they will start as they qualify,
12:09and two points will go to the pole sitter as well.
12:12So in a crucial championship battle,
12:14that is what Nicolas Sola wants.
12:16He wants to get that extra two points over Mini and Camera.
12:20Now, we've got the likes of Camera,
12:22Miata, Maini, Inchipuzak, Leon, Villa Gomez, Veroni,
12:26all on an outlet, Piers.
12:27So they've let these guys go out,
12:29and now they're going to go for their first run.
12:31Yeah, there's a slight advantage to doing this in theory.
12:33In theory, it's a minor advantage.
12:35But because half of the field, or two-thirds of the field,
12:3815 of the 22, have been out there already and cleared the circuit up,
12:42that's a bit more rubber that's gone down.
12:43The track temperature may have gone up, I think, by a degree or so,
12:46which in theory is a bit slower.
12:47But it's going to be closer now, the circuit, in this condition,
12:50than it will be at the end of the session
12:51when everyone goes for their ultimate fastest lap.
12:54So you're a bit more calibrated for that final run of the session.
12:57But it's all marginal gains, you know.
12:59We head through the 6-7 chicane,
13:01a big amount of curve from Dino Vaganovic.
13:04Too much curve, the plank, the underside of the car hitting the curve.
13:07And then, unfortunately, the camera on the exit gets it.
13:12Wow.
13:13He's a good soldier.
13:14Had a good run.
13:16Dino Vaganovic didn't, though, and went hopping over the chicane a little too aggressively
13:21and went off onto the exit of the circuit and through the camera.
13:27Now, speaking of that, camera out on his out lap.
13:32Miata next along, Maini, Intrapubizac, Leon, Villa Gomez, and Veroni.
13:37As you called earlier, Piers, it's going to be the banker lap first and then the full, full push lap.
13:41Yeah, it's important to get a banker lap in.
13:43As much as most of the drivers will improve on that final lap in the session towards the end,
13:47because the fuel's gone down, the rubber's gone down, the drivers have got their eye in.
13:51And having a good banker lap in, we say it time and time again, but it's psychological, really.
13:56If you've got a good first run and you haven't made a mistake, the car feels good,
13:59you've got an understanding of the balance, it just feels like you don't have to push quite as hard
14:02on that second lap or you don't have as much pressure on your shoulders
14:05so you can execute slightly more freely.
14:08Whereas when you know you don't have a lap on the board, this is the only opportunity you've got.
14:12You kind of have to leave a little bit of margin on the table
14:15because if you run wide of one of the corners where we see drivers lose times for track limits,
14:19then you're going to be starting at the absolute back,
14:22if not just halfway down the field if you've already got a good banker.
14:25Alex Dunn continuing on here, isn't he?
14:27He's going to put another one down on the boards through this set of corners.
14:33He comes now, the road and driver.
14:35We'll keep one eye on those on a flying lap as well.
14:39So Alex Dunn slower through the first sector, but continuing on.
14:43And just about within the margins there, similar to what we saw with Joshua Dirksen there.
14:48You only need one tyre on or between the white lines, Chris,
14:51and one tyre was all that was required for both Dirksen earlier and then Alex Dunn on this lap.
14:57Yeah, Alex Dunn now coming through the penultimate corner.
14:59Will we see him dip into pit lane?
15:01Yes, Alex Dunn now coming in.
15:04And of course, you do mention there is a fuel plan that they'll be running to as well.
15:07Here's a replay of what we just saw.
15:08Here we go, through turn 11 on the power.
15:10But just a fair handful of understeer mid-corner then turned to snap oversteer
15:14as the car bottomed out on the kerb at the exit.
15:16Now, this driver has just gone fastest.
15:18Noel Leon through the first sector.
15:21You can see the purple highlighted sector, meaning that's the fastest we've seen in this session so far.
15:27Green will mean that it is a personal best lap.
15:30And Noel Leon just threw that turn 11.
15:32And that's where they're running the limits.
15:34This is the extra DRSO now here, Chris.
15:36Yeah, extra DRSO now towards turn 12.
15:38Again, not making a huge difference to overall lap time.
15:41Just a little bit in the racing.
15:42We head into the technical final sector.
15:44Goes in early.
15:45I like that line from Noel Leon.
15:47Getting the car to the apex, hooking it all the way around.
15:49Does the same into the last corner, avoiding that snap of oversteer that we've seen from some of the drivers
15:53before.
15:54Plants the power out of turn 14.
15:56Comes up to the line.
15:57Up to the line he goes.
15:59And it's a Campos 1-2.
16:01Currently in qualifying.
16:02Not anymore.
16:02Cushmine splits them now.
16:05How about Rafa Kamara?
16:07Could be on for three pole positions in a row.
16:10We've seen it done by four drivers currently racing on the Formula 1 grid.
16:15Can Rafa Kamara do it as well?
16:17Now through the penultimate corner.
16:18Into the final corner we go.
16:20It's Noel Leon who is leading the way so far.
16:23Making his way up towards the line now.
16:26Goes Rafa Kamara.
16:27And there he goes to provisional pole position.
16:31Can he be on for joining the likes of Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon and George Russell as a
16:38driver to take three consecutive poles in Formula 2.
16:41That would be an exclusive group, wouldn't it?
16:43But how many times have we seen in a qualifying session Rafa Kamara put himself up to the top of
16:47the field?
16:48Let's have a long board.
16:49Cushmine who is fastest in the middle sector in practice this morning by quite a margin actually.
16:53Found something later on in that session.
16:56Trying to replicate it in this qualifying session.
16:58Finding the apexes nicely but hustling the car on the exit at Turn 5 there.
17:01The issue with doing something like that, Chris, early in the lap Turn 5.
17:04You have a big oversteer moment like that.
17:06That left rear tyre is then hotter than you would otherwise have had it.
17:09For the remainder of the lap which gives you less grip on the traction zone out of Turn 9.
17:13Less grip as you commit to Turn 11.
17:15And less grip on the traction zone out of Turn 14.
17:18So when we're seeing the likes of Joshua Dirksen come sliding through Turn 11.
17:22Could that be an effect of just a small mistake earlier in the lap?
17:26It could well be, yes.
17:29If you overheat a tyre by sliding it early on in the lap.
17:31These Pirelli tyres, they really don't like sliding across the surface.
17:35It looks cool.
17:36Looks like you're absolutely on the ragged edge of grip.
17:37But it has knock-on effects later in the lap.
17:41Sounds great as well out there.
17:42There's been lots of noise down at that final corner with drivers drifting through the corner quite literally.
17:48Joshua Dirksen currently not where he'd want to be.
17:51He's had a worst result of 11th in qualifying.
17:54Only out the top 10 once.
17:55Nikola Sollov has never been out of it so far this season.
17:59And looking on very calm.
18:00That's the body language, isn't it, of a championship leader.
18:04Always looks calm.
18:05Knows that he needs to be caught in this championship.
18:08As long as he keeps pumping in the good championship results, then it's over to the other drivers to close
18:15him down.
18:15But his lead over Gabriele Mini currently 27 points.
18:20And he has a 36-point advantage over camera.
18:23Both high-techs in the top 10 back at Spa.
18:26And Rotoma Miata we're watching now.
18:28Yeah, Rotoma Miata heads towards the technical 6-7 chicane.
18:32Beautifully over the curb there.
18:34That's exactly what you want to do there.
18:35Just ride the curb so you can shorten the line.
18:37But without hitting the bottom of the car on the sausage curb in the middle, out to the edge of
18:41the curb.
18:42It's a tidy lap from Rotoma Miata as we head into the end of the second sector.
18:46What will this look like in terms of a time?
18:49Let's find out.
18:50He is two-tenths off Rafa Camera.
18:52It's Noel Leon the one to watch, isn't it?
18:53He's just gone fastest through that first sector.
18:56Cushmine also up.
18:57But now Noel Leon drops two-tenths back.
18:59We continue on with high-tech driver Rotoma Miata.
19:04Both he and Colton Erta in the points last time.
19:06Beautiful shot as we see them coming through the final corner.
19:10Lovely stuff that and a bit of a drift out for Rotoma Miata to finish it off.
19:15Across the line he goes.
19:16P12 just outside that top ten.
19:18Yeah, just falling away towards the end of the lap there, Miata.
19:20He was two-tenths from the best we've seen in the end of the second sector,
19:24but then couldn't quite match what we've seen from the other drivers in the final.
19:28Interesting.
19:28Noel Leon, purple in the first.
19:30Was he to improve in the second as well?
19:32But then coming into the pits,
19:34so clearly thinks he's got more on the table from a new set.
19:37Rafa Kamara going quicker though.
19:38Let's see what he does into turn 12 here.
19:41Little bit of a lock up there and it just goes slightly wide.
19:45Rafa Kamara now going up towards the penultimate corner.
19:48He's only got himself to beat.
19:50He's done a 1.29.380 and he's going to finish this lap off now into the final corner we
19:55go.
19:56And you can see him just taking that wider line, picks up the apex towards the end of the corner,
20:00gets the DRS open and beats himself by five hundredths of a second.
20:05And now his gap, one and a half tenths.
20:07Is that on the same set of tyres?
20:08Yes.
20:09I don't think he's been in the pits.
20:10So that's impressive that he's managed to cool the tyre and then go again.
20:14Because normally you'd struggle to improve your time, but clearly finding a lot more there.
20:18You heard as we went downhill towards turn 12 that the engine was shuddering as the rears of tyres were
20:23locking up.
20:25As we jump on board with Rafa Villegomez, braking far too late for the 6.7 chicane and cutting through,
20:29that will not be allowed to stand even if he did continue that lap on.
20:33But just jumping on board with Rafa Kamara, the car was shuddering,
20:37which is an indication that the rear tyres are rotating slower than the road surface,
20:41effectively the rear equivalent of a lock up,
20:43but managed to arrest the speed of the car just about enough to get to the apex.
20:47That says to me that he's absolutely as far backwards on the brake bars.
20:50He's moved the braking potential of the car backwards and backwards and backwards to avoid the front lock up
20:55and has actually gone slightly too far so that he ends up with rear locking,
20:58which is risky because you do that too much and effectively you end up drifting the car into a corner
21:03like a handbrake
21:04and it can overheat the rear tyres as well, but right on the ragged edge of grip.
21:07And, I mean, obviously because he's fastest at the moment.
21:11You see Nikola Solev really slowing the speed here, isn't he, through turn four.
21:16Is this just a case of wanting to find a gap on the circuit?
21:20Do you think?
21:21It looks like he's got plenty of space around.
21:24This will probably be a planned procedure to get the tyres and brakes
21:29to the temperature and pressure in the tyres that the team wants.
21:34They will have a plan, they will have instructed the drivers in each team
21:37that we've got a different way of making sure the tyres are warming up properly.
21:41They're not going to struggle to get heat into the tyres here.
21:44It's 23, 24 degrees air temperature, 34, 35 degrees track temperature now,
21:48which means that warm-up isn't a problem.
21:50It's more about keeping the tyres working or getting them working for the start of the lap,
21:55but also keeping them working for the whole lap.
21:5814 turns around here.
21:59It's pretty hard on tyres around here, especially the rear tyres
22:02because we've got so many traction zones.
22:04Exit turn one, turn two, turn five, turn six, seven, and then the last sector as well.
22:09The rear tyres can fall away, which is potentially why we're seeing drivers struggling
22:13with the rear tyre losing grip on the entry to turn 14 as well.
22:16And this shows its warm-up procedure is just as important as the flying lap.
22:23Well, speaking of qualifying and strategy, we spoke to Sanipa Winchipur-Vizak
22:27about the strategy in qualifying.
22:29Let's see what he has to say.
22:33I think the approach is going to be the same as Spa.
22:36The only difference is here you don't really want a tow or a car in front.
22:40I think it's a shorter track, but I think it's got the same amount of difficulties that Spa has,
22:50and I think the approach always has to be the same.
22:52So we've been working really hard during this short break to prepare us as best as possible.
22:57I was in the sim two days ago in ART as well.
23:00So I think, yeah, we've prepared as best as possible.
23:03I feel confident.
23:03So just looking forward to getting on track tomorrow now.
23:07Podium for Sanipa Winchipur-Vizak in the last weekend.
23:10Great result for him and the fans from Thailand in eight years
23:12since Alex Albon took his podium at Sochi.
23:16Completely right, isn't he, there.
23:18And interesting to hear he'd already left Spa, gone to the sim two days,
23:23and then back here for the race.
23:25It's a busy couple of rounds for these drivers, isn't it?
23:29Yeah, these drivers and teams don't just use a simulator for a bit of fun between races.
23:33It's very much work for them.
23:35They use the simulator to train their drivers to get them to do exactly this sort of thing.
23:39They'll be doing, on the sim, they'll be doing tyre prep like they are now
23:43just to get them into exactly the rhythm of right.
23:46This is how we want you to get the tyres up to temperature.
23:48This is how we think that we can prepare these Pirelli tyres
23:51so that they will work for you at the start of the lap and stay with the highest amount of
23:56grip possible
23:56towards the end of the lap as well.
23:57They'll also be working on set-up as well and fine-tuning every single detail
24:01that allows you to smash a Formula 2 car around at absolutely breakneck speeds here in the Hungara ring.
24:08Nikola Solov then in fourth place, just shy of three-tenths back from one of his championship rivals,
24:15Rafa Kamra, who is currently sat in pit lane along with Leon Villa-Gomez,
24:19Paganovic, Belinsky, Miata and Verone.
24:22Can Solov now put the pressure on Kamra and go quicker on this lap?
24:26It's looked clean and tidy through the first two corners, flat out downhill.
24:29Now we go through turn three.
24:31Let's see what he does through the first sector pitch.
24:33Yeah, first sector line is that line that we can just see there.
24:35It should break the split right now, three-hundredths away or four-hundredths away from the best we've seen.
24:40That's within the ballpark.
24:41You mentioned a fairly steady start to the lap.
24:43That may well be a tactic just to keep the tyres under control, keep it calm,
24:48and then you wring the tyres out towards the end of the lap.
24:50Finds the apex at turn six and seven.
24:53Uses all the exit on seven as we head into the eight-nine combination here.
24:57Uses a bit more entry road than some drivers choose.
25:00He's going to do a big wobble on the exit of turn nine there as we head flat out through
25:04turn ten into turn eleven.
25:06This is critical.
25:07Keep the minimum speed up.
25:08Again, right out to the edge of track limits.
25:09Purple in the middle, Chris.
25:11Has never taken a Formula Two pole position, Nikola Solov,
25:14which I'm sure will come as a surprise to many of you,
25:17but he's been hugely consistent,
25:19wanting to get that first pole position now,
25:21the Red Bull Junior,
25:23to give him that additional two points
25:25and the margin going into the feature race.
25:28This has looked a really good lap so far.
25:29Through the final corner, he comes.
25:31Can he now go ahead of his championship rival, Rafa Kamara?
25:34Yes, he does by one hundredth of a second,
25:37but what about Gabriele Mini and what about Joshua Dirksen?
25:40Let's go back to the Italian first.
25:42Gabriele Mini out of the final corner now.
25:45P3 for him, just two hundredths back.
25:48Next, it will be Joshua Dirksen who heads into the final corner.
25:51This is looking good from Dirksen.
25:53A bit of a wobble coming through, just stays within track limits.
25:56Up to the line he goes and provisional pole position
25:59for Joshua Dirksen by two-tenths of a second.
26:02Invicta keep up their excellent run,
26:04both at the Hungaroring and in recent times.
26:07But keep an eye.
26:08Cushmine was fast in practice.
26:10Purple in the middle.
26:11We head into the final sector.
26:12What can Cushmine do?
26:13The Indian driver gets to the apex.
26:15Turn 13, a little bit wide, but carries good speed.
26:18There's a car ahead.
26:19Hopefully he won't get in his way.
26:20That's one of the tridents.
26:21Oh, a bit of a wobble.
26:22Oh, Cushmine's going to be off the rubber.
26:24That's going to cost him time.
26:25Out of the final corner he comes now,
26:27and he'll pick up a toe from that trident just up to the line
26:30and two-tenths of a second clear from the rest of the field.
26:33The driver who won here in 2024
26:36and has two pole positions already,
26:39now in provisional pole,
26:40but we still have drivers out there on flying laps
26:43and five minutes to go.
26:45To Sanapol in Tripuvizak next to the line.
26:47P3 for the ART driver.
26:49ART clearly got a good setup going on around here
26:51as they go first and third initially,
26:54but what a lap from Maini.
26:55We were on board.
26:55It looked like he actually overpushed a little bit
26:57in the final sector,
26:58missed the apex of both 13 and 14,
27:00but clearly carried enough speed
27:02that it didn't really matter.
27:04But that's a gauntlet he's laid down there.
27:06That could be another pole this season
27:07after Maini, of course,
27:08has pole earlier on this year,
27:10wasn't he, in Miami, wasn't it?
27:11Yeah, Cushmine absolutely took pole
27:15back at the second round.
27:17Are we going to see him pole
27:17for the second time this season?
27:19Oli Gertha, 17th so far,
27:22wants to get into that top 10,
27:23and there we go, 10th place.
27:24That would be sprint race pole for Oli Gertha.
27:28What about Emerson Fittipaldi?
27:30AIX puts him up to 13th place.
27:33Solid stuff for Fittipaldi.
27:34Still a little bit to go as well.
27:36We keep our eyes on Rafa Kammerer.
27:39Still in the pit lane.
27:41Is he going to have a late run at this now
27:43to try and fight back at Maini?
27:45Van Hoopen.
27:47Race winner here in 2024 in FIA Formula 3.
27:51Coming off the back of a difficult weekend
27:53in Spa after that crash.
27:55Team did a good job to rebuild a car
27:57from this weekend.
27:58And then Solov pushing hard.
28:00This was his, well, was provisionally pole
28:02at that time.
28:03There's that wiggle he had.
28:04That wouldn't have cost him
28:05a huge amount of time.
28:06But it wasn't enough to keep him.
28:08He's apparently within, easily within
28:09the top reverse, partially reverse grid, top 10.
28:13But there you go.
28:14Look, that tells a story, doesn't it?
28:15Green, purple, purple.
28:16No wonder Cushmine.
28:18A couple attempts to clear the field at this stage.
28:20But there's still more drivers to come.
28:22Yep.
28:23Noel Leon heading out.
28:25Rafa Kammerer heading out.
28:27Nikola Solov back now in pit lane.
28:29And I think that will be a session done.
28:31Likewise for Joshua Dirksen as well.
28:33Well, so now it's over to the drivers
28:36who we saw waiting in pit lane
28:38and heading out.
28:39Villa Gomez has been looking quick.
28:40He's 11th.
28:41Buganovich was fastest in practice.
28:43Only 16th so far.
28:45But will that all change now
28:46on this final lap?
28:48Yep.
28:49The air and track temperature
28:50are actually dropping lap by lap at the moment.
28:53A degree cooler than it was a few minutes ago.
28:54Not a massive difference.
28:55But when you're looking at differences
28:57between drivers of hundreds of a second,
28:59that can be the difference.
29:00There's also the rubber goes down as well.
29:01If you jump on board with Lorenz van Hoopen
29:04into the middle sector.
29:05This is turn six and seven.
29:06You'll see him break.
29:07We'll use a little bit of the curb on the way in.
29:09And then a lot of the curb through the exit
29:10on the way out.
29:11Jumping over the curb there
29:12into the left-hander of six now.
29:14Makes the apex nicely.
29:16Then seven.
29:17A couple of stabs at the steering
29:18but carries good minimum speed
29:19all the way out to the exit
29:21using a bit of the Astro as well.
29:22Then 11.
29:23Full commitment through here.
29:24This is probably the most committed corner
29:27on the circuit.
29:28Just about using all the road
29:29and not using too much of the curb on the exit.
29:31Then downhill we go.
29:32Critical braking into 12.
29:34That gravel bed on the left-hand side
29:36comes so close to the drivers.
29:3813 and 14.
29:39Again, makes it nicely to the apex.
29:40Early apex.
29:43Struggling for traction at 13 and 14.
29:45The last corner on the lap.
29:46This is where the tyres are saying
29:47I've had enough.
29:48You've pushed me hard already.
29:50Do I really need to do one more corner?
29:52Yes, you do.
29:53And it is Van Hoopen.
29:54Laurence Van Hoopen.
29:55A driver that likes this circuit
29:56up inside the top five.
29:58Fourth place.
29:59Yeah, we've seen him on pole here
30:01in Formula 3 a couple of years ago.
30:03Martini Estension
30:04making his way downhill
30:06towards turn 12 now.
30:07Currently ninth place for him.
30:09Made a return to the points
30:11last round after
30:12three rounds away from them.
30:14And Martini Estension
30:15looking to continue that on now
30:17here at Hungary.
30:19Heads through the final corner
30:20and on to the start finish straight now.
30:22Let's see what he does on this lap.
30:24His teammate Alex Dunn
30:26really needs to improve
30:27down in 20th place.
30:28Falling away from Solov
30:30in terms of the points
30:31and only 15th place for Alex Dunn.
30:33That's a real disappointing result for him
30:36but should get another chance at it.
30:38Let's watch Gabriele Mini.
30:40Sliding his way to the exit turn two.
30:42Should be flat out through three.
30:43Turned in a bit late actually.
30:44And there's an example.
30:45Half a car width
30:47wide through three.
30:48You'll probably see a bit of dust
30:49come up from the left-hand side tyres.
30:51Just a little bit.
30:52There you go.
30:52You miss your turning point
30:53and it's been so dusty offline here.
30:55As Mariboya locks up at turn one.
30:57Once again,
30:58only the inside tyre.
30:59This time we saw a double front lockup
31:01in practice
31:01but more frustration
31:03for the Prema driver,
31:04the Aston Martin livery driver.
31:07Yeah, really so.
31:08We're just keeping an eye now
31:10on the likes of camera Leon as well
31:13to see what they can do.
31:14They're preparing
31:15for their final laps.
31:17You can see we're into
31:18the final minutes of the session now.
31:21Here we watch.
31:22Yeah, really so.
31:23We're just keeping an eye now
31:25on the likes of camera Leon as well
31:28to see what they can do.
31:29They're preparing
31:30for their final laps.
31:32You can see we're into
31:33the final minutes of the session now.
31:36Here we watch Roman Belinsky
31:38heading through the middle section
31:41of the circuit
31:42up towards the chicane.
31:43Alex Dunn,
31:45Martinis Stenshaw
31:46getting out of the way.
31:47Let's wait for Dino Beganovic
31:49to come into view here, Piers.
31:50He's improving on this lap.
31:51Yeah, he's in the second
31:52of the two Dams Lucas Orcars.
31:54We saw him ride on board
31:55a couple of laps ago
31:55through that 6-7 chicane.
31:57Looks like he went through
31:58there nicely again.
31:59That's Dunn just getting
32:00out of the way nicely.
32:02So cars in the way.
32:03Well, cars on circuit
32:04but not in the way
32:04for Beganovic.
32:05He's improving
32:06in his personal best first sector.
32:08This is the end of sector two.
32:10We'll see if it goes
32:10green, yellow or purple.
32:11He's not far away,
32:12you know, Chris.
32:13No, I'll tell you what though.
32:14The purple sectors
32:15are coming in
32:16further behind
32:17Dino Beganovic on track.
32:19Camera's just on a 31.4,
32:21quickest of anyone.
32:21Leon's done a really good lap
32:22as well.
32:23Beganovic, 17th place,
32:25will be looking to move forward
32:26on this lap.
32:27Let's see what he can do.
32:28But one eye also
32:29on Leon and Camera as well
32:31who's absolutely flying out there.
32:33Out of the final corner
32:34we go.
32:35Dino Beganovic heads to the line.
32:37P6 for him,
32:38four tenths away.
32:39But we now come back
32:40to Rafael Villegomez,
32:43Noel Leon and Rafa Camera
32:44all improving on this lap
32:46and Camera is fastest
32:47through the first two sectors.
32:49Villegomez first to the line.
32:50No, misses out on a top ten.
32:52Noel Leon,
32:53the white campos
32:53in the background
32:55now making his way
32:56through the final corner
32:57onto the star finish straight.
32:58He goes,
32:59what will it be for the Mexican?
33:00A front row star provisionally,
33:02but will that change?
33:03Cushmine has pole.
33:05The checkered flag is waving.
33:06Will it be three in a row
33:07for Rafa Camera?
33:08Up to the line he goes
33:09and he misses out
33:10second place
33:11for Rafa Camera.
33:12So it will be a second
33:14Aramco pole position
33:15for Cushmine this season
33:17and Rafa Camera
33:19finishing in second place
33:20with Noel Leon in third.
33:22Championship leader
33:23Nikola Solov seventh.
33:24But celebrations for ART.
33:26They take the Aramco pole position
33:28here at Hungary.
33:29Wow, what a lap from Cushmine.
33:30We saw it, didn't we?
33:31It was green, purple, purple at the time.
33:33Camera went fastest in the first
33:34but it wasn't enough.
33:35Pole position, man.
33:36Pole position.
33:37Yes.
33:40Well done to Cushmine.
33:42He's just getting better
33:43and better this season.
33:45Currently P6 in the standings
33:48and really improving throughout.
33:50That's another pole position for him.
33:53Well done.
33:54You can see Rafa Camera
33:55didn't quite have enough
33:57in the end to beat Cushmine
33:58who had already set his lap.
34:00He was just watching
34:01from the pit lane
34:02and that will be
34:03a really good result
34:04for the driver P6
34:05in the standings ahead of him.
34:07Alex Dunn did not have a good session
34:09so chances for Cushmine
34:11to move forward
34:12in the standings as well.
34:17Camera, second place.
34:19Let's have a look back
34:19at some of his lap.
34:20Yeah, we head into the final sector here.
34:22Drivers ahead.
34:23Did they get in the way?
34:25Oh, it was an AIX just about okay.
34:27There's a driver up ahead.
34:28There would be a minor
34:29aerodynamic penalty
34:30from having a driver
34:31going through a corner
34:32a second or so ahead of you.
34:34Maybe contributing
34:35to that slight wiggle.
34:36I mean, I don't think actually
34:37that wiggle would have made
34:38a huge difference
34:39because it was nearly two tenths
34:40at the front of the field
34:41so a great lap from Cushmine.
34:43Camera will be content
34:44of course with second place
34:46but we know how much
34:47he likes a pole position.
34:48We saw Cushmine, didn't we?
34:49In a similar position
34:50behind one of the Tridents
34:51and then had that toe down
34:53the style finish straight.
34:54Two tenths.
34:55He'd done it all
34:56through the second
34:56and third sector
34:57so he'll be very happy with that.
34:59Noel Leon will be very happy
35:00with that as well.
35:01P3 for him.
35:02That's a great result
35:03for Noel Leon.
35:04Great result
35:04and also needs that
35:05after the TAQ last time.
35:07Oh man, we worked hard
35:08for this, didn't we?
35:10Oh.
35:11ART, I'm back.
35:15Really good stuff there
35:16for Cushmine and ART.
35:19Really thank the team
35:20for their efforts
35:21when we saw him
35:22on the podium
35:22at Silverstone as well.
35:24He seems to just be working
35:25really well with them
35:27and this is their first
35:28pole position
35:28at this circuit
35:29since Nick de Vries
35:30in 2019.
35:32So they are certain
35:34back at this circuit
35:35and they are just getting
35:36better and better
35:37this season.
35:38ART, yeah,
35:39you're absolutely right, Chris.
35:40I think they're just
35:40going from strength
35:42to strength.
35:42I think it's a really
35:43good combination
35:43you've got there
35:44with ART and Cushmine
35:45that's taking a pole
35:46already this year.
35:47Cush says,
35:48he's said before,
35:48he's really found himself.
35:49He's found the driver
35:50that he knows he is
35:51with ART this season
35:52and ART are giving him
35:54the car to be able
35:54to perform
35:55and it's a good result
35:56as well for
35:57Intra Bufuzak.
35:58He's P5-2 teammates
35:59so two ARTs
36:00in the top five.
36:02Great result from them.
36:02Yeah, absolutely.
36:04So he is in a bit
36:06of a fight
36:06with Noel Leon
36:07fifth place
36:08in the championship
36:09but he'll be looking
36:10to close the gap
36:11to the likes
36:11of Dunn
36:13in fourth place
36:14throughout this weekend.
36:16Good session overall,
36:17one where we saw
36:18teams taking
36:18different tactics.
36:19And also looking
36:20to see how
36:21it all plays out
36:22in the races
36:22because you've got
36:23Solov who did make it
36:24into the partial reverse grid
36:25but he's down in seventh.
36:26So if things finish
36:27as they are in the feature,
36:28which they won't,
36:29then we could have
36:30a nice little close-up
36:32in terms of the championship
36:33which is good
36:34for all of us neutrals.
36:35Yeah, Mini will be second
36:36for the sprint.
36:37Solov will be fourth.
36:39So they will be
36:39right behind each other
36:41and Kamara will be down
36:43in P9.
36:45And then he'll be
36:46on the front row
36:46for the feature race
36:49on Sunday
36:49and alongside him
36:51on pole position
36:51will be Cush Miney
36:53taking a second pole position
36:55of the season.
36:56Rafa Kamara second,
36:57Noel Leon in third place.
36:59Joshua Dirksen
37:00finishes in fourth place.
37:01Great qualifying result
37:02for him.
37:03Sanopo Interpovers
37:04continuing his form.
37:05Laurence van Hoopen
37:06is back up there
37:07in P6.
37:08That's a great recovery
37:09after that huge incident
37:10at Malmedy
37:11which took him out
37:12of the feature race
37:13and Solov,
37:14Viganovic, Mini,
37:14Montoya will be pole
37:16for the sprint race.
37:17Can he get that first win
37:18and put Colombia
37:19on the top step?
37:20We'll find out tomorrow.
37:21He'll have it hard
37:22with Mini next to him
37:23then.
37:23Stenchon, Villa Gomez,
37:25Gertha, Bennett,
37:26Vittipaldi,
37:27Verone, Dunn,
37:28Hertha in 18,
37:29Shields in 19,
37:30Belinsky down
37:31in 20th place
37:33and then Rotoma
37:34when we are to 21st
37:35and Maui Boyer
37:36will be happy to see
37:37the end of this day.
37:38Let's see if he can
37:39recover throughout
37:40the sprint
37:40and the feature race.
37:42That is all
37:43for the action
37:44here at Friday
37:45at the Hungar Ring.
37:47What an exciting
37:48day it has been
37:49and we're set up
37:50very nicely
37:50for our sprint race
37:52tomorrow
37:52and our feature race
37:53on Sunday.
37:54Join us for the 28-lap
37:56sprint race
37:56at 2.15 local time
37:58here.
37:59It will be
37:59Sebastian Montoya,
38:00Gabriele Mini
38:01on the front row
38:01and in the commentary
