00:01МУЗЫКАЛЬНАЯ ЗАСТАВКА
00:40Just a few days ago, it was the spa weekend for the Formula 3 drivers.
00:45Round 6 of the season, now into the second half.
00:48And back-to-back podiums would see Freddy Slater start on pole position
00:52for the feature race.
00:54Contact between the two teammates, Teofil Nihal and Ugo Ugochukwu
00:58going through Malmedy in the opening stages of the race.
01:0230 cars charging through Eau Rouge, one of the best scenes of the season.
01:08And out front, it would be once again celebrations for Campos Racing
01:12as Ernesto Rivera would charge through to take his first feature race win
01:17of the season.
01:18Hiyu Yamakoshi would finish second place for the second time this season
01:23with Freddy Slater taking a podium with the championship leader Ugo Ugochukwu
01:28scoring no points after incidents with Freddy Slater on the Saturday
01:33and his teammate, Teofil Nihal, on the Sunday.
01:36Freddy Slater has closed the gap to just one point between the top two
01:41in the championship with 39 points back to Teofil Nihal in third.
01:46Well, this is the last one before the summer break.
01:49Three rounds to go now in Formula 3.
01:51We are well and truly into the business end of the season.
01:55And the task this weekend couldn't be much different.
01:58We go from one of the longest circuits to one of the shortest
02:01from Spa to Hungary.
02:03And a return to Formula 3 for the Colombian Salim Hanna.
02:08We saw him make his debut earlier this season with AIX Racing.
02:13And he has returned for the second time after being with us at Red Bull Ring.
02:18The 16-year-old looking to go out there and get some good experience
02:22in the championship before a possible full campaign next season.
02:26He's been racing in the Formula Regional European Championship this season.
02:31Well, I'm Chris McCarthy.
02:32Alongside me, as ever, Piers Fryer.
02:35And Piers, what a difference a week makes from Spa to Hungary.
02:38Here we go.
02:39Yeah, absolutely.
02:40Two almost counteracting circuits at Spa.
02:44We've got a lot of long corners, a lot of high-speed sections.
02:47Here at the Hungary Ring, it's about as close to a street circuit
02:50as you can get without it being a street circuit.
02:52A lot of low and medium speed corners.
02:55To be fair, actually, maybe I'm being a bit unfair.
02:57There's a fair few long corners here, but the average speed far, far lower.
03:01It's a lot shorter circuit.
03:02It's running 4.3 kilometres, 2.7 miles compared to the 7-kilometre behemoth
03:07that we were racing around last time out.
03:09And it's a really technical challenge for the drivers.
03:11It's a circuit that rewards getting in, breaking deep into the corners,
03:16getting into the corners strongly.
03:18Some drivers really tend to go rail round here.
03:20I mean, I think to Gerrard Schee last year, he was outstanding.
03:23That was his best result.
03:24He was quick here in British F3 GB3 Championship as well in the years previous.
03:30And so because it's such a different challenge,
03:32you have to really adjust your technique,
03:34adjust the way you drive these Formula 3 cars to get the most out of them.
03:38And it's also a circuit that looks like it's going to be fairly affected by wind.
03:42We saw in 2024 in qualifying, a lot of drivers making mistakes
03:45and running wide through Turn 11 due to the tailwind that plays there.
03:48We've got exactly the same tailwind again today.
03:51It's pretty blustery out there.
03:52Headwind down towards Turn 1, which makes braking easier
03:54than that middle sector where most of the corners are.
03:57Tailwind, which makes these cars slightly more difficult
03:59because it just takes a bit of air off the wings that the drivers then have to adjust for.
04:03Well, the eagle-eyed of you would have noticed that the drivers have the hard tyres on their cars currently.
04:10It's the medium selected for this weekend, Piers.
04:13So teams at this stage will use some carryover tyres,
04:17saving the tyres for qualifying later because this is one of the circuits in particular
04:22where tyres play a big part.
04:24Yeah, that's exactly why we've got a lot of the cars currently in the pits as well.
04:27In fact, only one car out in the circuit.
04:29Yeah, Michael Shin, I think, is the only car there, yeah.
04:31Yeah, we can Shin out in the circuit at the moment.
04:33The hard tyre I use in practice, that's a tyre that can only be used in practice.
04:37The mediums will be used for qualifying and both races coming up.
04:40There's three sets of that medium tyre available to each driver
04:43and they will be putting that on for the first time probably in qualifying.
04:47We may see maybe one or two drivers try that medium tyre out.
04:51Maybe Salim Hanra, a slightly less experienced driver, will appreciate that.
04:55But we won't know until we see it because the teams keep their strategies very much under their hats
05:00until they go out in the circuit.
05:02But the reason that they'll save those medium tyres, most of the teams,
05:04is because they want three runs at it.
05:06It's a very short circuit, so getting three runs in the qualifying session is possible.
05:10And the more bites of the apple that you have,
05:13the better opportunity you have of extracting the maximum out of it
05:16because despite it being a short-ish circuit,
05:18you can work the tyres fairly hard around here.
05:20A few traction zones, long corners can burn it away,
05:23which basically means that the first run or the first lap,
05:27first flying lap on a new set of tyres is always the quickest.
05:30And if you then have to go a second time, you're leaving time on the table.
05:35Well, we saw the highlights from the Spa feature race at the beginning of the show there,
05:41and that included another pole position for Audi Junior Freddy Slater,
05:46and a podium which saw him close the gap to Ugo Igachuku to one point.
05:49Let's hear what he had to say.
05:54Yeah, you know, Friday was super positive.
05:56P1 in practice, P1 in qualifying.
05:59The pace has been really good over one lap.
06:01I think the team has done an amazing job to give me a car that probably suits my style a
06:04little bit more.
06:05And also, I've kind of gained a bit more knowledge of what this car needs from me.
06:09I think generally as a team, our race pace hasn't been amazing.
06:12If you look at all the races, I think we need to do a little bit of work on that
06:15to kind of use that pole position and hopefully have better results in the feature race, let's say.
06:21But I think it's been a very positive year so far,
06:23and I think it's clear we need to work on our race pace, like I say.
06:27So I'm sure the team will do their best to try and achieve that,
06:31and also I'll try and do my best to see what I can improve on.
06:35Six podiums in six rounds for Freddy Slater so far.
06:40He's been showing similar results to what we've seen from the likes of Fornaroli, wasn't it?
06:46It was on his way to winning the championship title.
06:49It was all about consistency.
06:50He's been in the top 12 every session so far,
06:53and Freddy Slater, with those six podiums, has closed the gap to just one point.
06:57Yeah, Slater's been very consistent,
07:00and it's interesting that he touched on that there,
07:02that he doesn't seem to think that qualifying pace is an issue,
07:05which means that he expects to be up there again this weekend.
07:07It was fastest at both the previous events and qualifying,
07:10but then said that the race pace wasn't very good.
07:13It was good compared to most people, but it wasn't good compared to Campos.
07:16Campos have just had the upper hand, haven't they,
07:18as we see Michael Shin in the high-tech.
07:20Just going around the circuit, sweeping it for everyone else,
07:23but he's getting his eye in.
07:25But, yeah, that's fine margins in Formula 3 and in Formula 2 as well.
07:30You know, the difference between a good,
07:32or so what the drivers and teams will class at the front of the field
07:35is a good race pace and not is a tenth or two per lap,
07:39and that's, I think, what Slater thinks he's lacking
07:41to maybe get that first win.
07:43If he had the out-and-out pace of the race run,
07:45maybe keeping the tyres exactly the way he needs them over the race run
07:48and being able to push on through the whole stint,
07:51that will be the difference he'll be looking for.
07:53Shin made his Formula 3 debut here back in 2023
07:56when he came and did a few rounds with us at the end of that season.
08:00This has been his first full campaign racing with high-tech.
08:03Let's have a look.
08:04Think exploring track limits here, the high-tech driver.
08:06I think it's fitting that that's the exit there of Turn 9
08:11in the end of the middle sector,
08:13that already our driver, only driver who's been out on circuit,
08:16already exploring track limits and going beyond them.
08:18I think that'll be something that we'll have to keep an eye on
08:21throughout this session and qualifying as well,
08:23and the races too.
08:24There's a few places on the circuit where drivers historically
08:27have been pushing the limits of the track
08:29and then getting lap times deleted and penalties in practice.
08:32Turn 1, the exit, drivers can run wide there,
08:35and if you go beyond the white line,
08:36generally you lose a bit of time because you lose traction,
08:38but we see that.
08:39Turn 3, which is the downhill flat out,
08:42or should be flat out, right-hander in dry conditions.
08:44Drivers sometimes run wide there,
08:45but the main points are Turn 4, very quick,
08:48start the second sector, blind entry,
08:50the exit comes up quickly, drivers run wide there.
08:54Turn, then we go Turn 11,
08:56which is the fast right-hander at the end of the second sector
08:59and then potentially the last corner as well.
09:02So we'll keep half an eye on those over the weekend.
09:03Those are the places where drivers potentially will be looking
09:06to go up to the edge of the track limits,
09:08and when you're pushing the limits on the ragged edge of grip,
09:11that's when sometimes you can just go beyond it,
09:13and that can ruin your qualifying and then potentially your race weekend
09:16as well if you have your fastest lap deleted.
09:19Whilst we have a quiet track,
09:21I think an appropriate time to just pay tribute
09:25to a Formula 3 driver.
09:27You may have seen this coming into the weekend,
09:29who very sadly passed away last Saturday at the age of just 21.
09:34It was Zdenek Hovonets, who made five appearance racing in the FIA Formula 3 championship
09:40with Sheru's racing system across the 2021 and 2022 season.
09:46Lots of tributes were being paid to him coming into the weekend,
09:48and everyone's thoughts within the Formula 3 paddock
09:52go out to his friends and family at this very difficult time.
09:5735 minutes remaining in this practice session.
10:00It might stay like this for a little while, won't it, Piers?
10:03Whilst it is, it gives us a chance to talk about the championship.
10:07Now, one point between the top two.
10:09However, we can't completely count out the drivers behind.
10:1239 points is what is available for a race weekend in Formula 3.
10:17That will change when we go to Madrid,
10:18where we have an additional feature race,
10:20and it will go up to 67.
10:22But that is the distance between Hugo and Teofil Nile.
10:25So we've seen with Ernesto Rivera, the climb he's done,
10:28he's moved all the way up to P5 in the championship
10:31with that feature race win last time out.
10:34There's a close battle for third going on,
10:36but we can't completely count the likes of Teofil Nile out just yet.
10:42No, we can't, absolutely not.
10:44We saw last year, Mary Boyle was a fair way off the championship leaders
10:47at the midpoint of the season.
10:48A double front lock-up.
10:49That says to me the track is still very green,
10:51because when you see a double front lock-up,
10:53it normally indicates that the drivers are hitting the brakes,
10:56expecting a certain amount of grip and then not receiving that grip.
10:59Look at how much dust is coming off the tyres there.
11:01So the circuit clearly got a lot of dust and debris
11:03and not much grip on there
11:05as the Genesis Magma Racing-supported driver
11:09jumps his way through the chicane at turns six and seven.
11:12We'll see plenty more of that this weekend.
11:14We'll see some more slow-mo,
11:15the drivers dancing the car through there.
11:17But back to my point,
11:18you're absolutely right, Chris, Teofil Nile,
11:20and the drivers are still in the top five or six positions.
11:24Stromstad-Rivera as well.
11:26It's an outside chance of an overall championship,
11:28but they'll be trying to definitely put themselves in a position
11:30to at least get in the top three,
11:31but maybe even pick up some pieces
11:33if Slater and Ugachuku come to blows like they did in Spa,
11:36but maybe miss out on some feature race points,
11:40because Mary Boyle was really strong towards the end of the year.
11:42He was not really in the conversation,
11:44but by the time we arrived at the final event last season,
11:47he was within a mathematical chance.
11:49That's all they'll be trying to do, really.
11:50Those drivers who are not, at the moment,
11:53you know, basically, you're not this man here,
11:54Ugachuku or Slater, who we're just looking at,
11:56then you're just trying to keep yourself mathematically in the hunt,
11:58because who knows?
11:59Feature race, double feature race
12:01at the Mad Ring at the end of the year.
12:03Let's say we have Slater and Ugachuku first and second.
12:06They could well take each other out two races in a row
12:08and leave the door wide open for someone else to come through.
12:11Yeah, 25 for the feature race.
12:13Win if you get the fastest lap.
12:14That goes to 52 points.
12:16An extra four points for both poles.
12:18You do the maths.
12:18It can be a big swing in the standings.
12:21We saw Ugo there.
12:23No points for him last weekend.
12:24Two incidents with two drivers around him in the championship.
12:28Do you think that was signs of pressure on Ugo as championship leader?
12:31I mean, he's someone who's won championships before,
12:33but winning a Formula 3 championship is a completely different task.
12:37It's hard to tell, isn't it?
12:38Ugachuku's such a calm customer.
12:40He's won a championship this year already in the Formula Regional Oceania championship
12:46at the start of the year.
12:47He's a former Macau Grand Prix winner.
12:50He's won many races in karts and cars and been up in many championships.
12:55So these drivers, especially at the front and the likes of Ugachuku,
12:57they know how to deal with pressure.
12:59They've done it before.
13:00But is it, you know, causation or correlation?
13:04Does correlation equal causation in terms of that?
13:07I think the contact with Slater, I think that was just a racing incident.
13:11You know, we've seen how many times we've seen drivers come together in LACOM.
13:13I mean, we saw it in Formula 1, didn't we?
13:15Yes.
13:15With George Russell.
13:16And I don't think that was, who knows, maybe that was pressure from George Russell as well.
13:20I don't know.
13:21But I think it was just an unfortunate weekend.
13:24Ugachuku's been so consistent so fast this year so far that, you know,
13:27when you're racing against 30 other F3 cars wheel to wheel,
13:30eventually you're going to have almost, you know, by probability,
13:33you're almost going to have an issue on circuit.
13:35And last weekend, unfortunately, two issues, two races meant that he dropped his lead
13:39and is now fighting toe-to-toe with Slater.
13:42Well, we were just speaking about Ugo Ugachuku's far weekend.
13:45We spoke to him about that coming in to practice.
13:48Let's hear what he has to say.
13:52Yeah, it wasn't the ideal weekend in Spa for us.
13:54You know, we've been so consistent up until then.
13:57So to leave with no points there was a little disappointing, of course.
14:01Yeah, the quality was very messy, unfortunately,
14:03and two good position penalties didn't help the weekend.
14:07So, yeah, it was unfortunate.
14:09But, you know, I think it's in the back of our mind now.
14:11So we try to focus on Budapest, have a cleaner Friday,
14:15and then, yeah, set up the weekend well.
14:17You know, a nice weekend here will be good to go into the summer break with a clear mind.
14:23We saw Noah Stromstead on circuit there, it appears.
14:27For him and Niall in particular, Stromstead scored two points, Niall scoring just four points.
14:33They had a real opportunity to close the gap there, didn't they?
14:36And it was not taken with Ugo scoring no points.
14:39Freddy scored 16, so that's the swing there.
14:42But for the other two drivers, only a handful of points scored.
14:46Yeah, when you have your rivals having a bad weekend, you really need to make the most of it.
14:51But ultimately, it's kind of set from qualifying, and qualifying this weekend, I think, is going to be crucial.
14:56Overtaking around the Hungara ring, notoriously difficult.
14:59We've got the long DRS zone down towards turn one.
15:01We've gained an additional DRS zone, so we've got three this year.
15:05So we've got DRS zone from turn 11 down to turn 12, then the main one down towards turn one,
15:10and then also the one that was there on the run down towards turn two as well.
15:16But because the middle sector is lots of low-medium speed corners, it's quite narrow around here,
15:22you've then got the fast turn 10-11 section, followed by the two hairpins at the end of the lap.
15:27Unless the driver in front makes a mistake, because the field is so tight, it is difficult to overtake.
15:32So if you have a poor qualifying, you don't get your lap in, you get your lap time deleted for
15:35whatever reason in qualifying,
15:37going over track limits, for example, you're unlikely to be able to make up more than five, six, seven, eight.
15:43You know, you're not going to be able to make more than 10 places in normal circumstances.
15:47So, you know, you qualify outside the top 20, you're unlikely to feature in the points.
15:51So that's what these drivers will be concentrating on going into this weekend,
15:55especially drivers at the front of the field.
15:56They'll be wanting to get a solid banker lap in on the first run.
15:59They'll be wanting to edge closer and get a little improvement in the second run,
16:03and then hopefully nail their third lap in qualifying.
16:05If you get track limits on your first run and you get blocked,
16:08it's going to put a lot of pressure on, and that's when you'll really have to show your mettle.
16:11Oh, well, someone's gone through the board there.
16:15That was one of the Trident cars, wasn't it?
16:17Who was that that went through that?
16:19I wonder if that's where our camera's hidden.
16:20Mateo Di Paolo, front wing damage for the McLaren Junior.
16:25Not an ideal start to his session at all.
16:28We've seen drivers running wide there in the past.
16:30It's the section of the circuit where we can see them go side by side.
16:34And Mateo Di Paolo will have to come into the pits now.
16:36It's fair to say the qualifying session last week, Piers,
16:39won't be remembered for Freddy Slater taking pole position.
16:43This isn't going to be a circuit where they go searching for a tow.
16:46We spoke about this before the session.
16:48They won't go searching for a tow here, more for space.
16:50So we could see, could we see a similar problem come in?
16:54Yes.
16:54Keep an eye and see where Ugachiki goes to.
16:56So start of the weekend, familiar faces.
16:58Ugachiki first, Slater second.
17:00Tafford and third, he took a podium here last year as well.
17:03So again, very early days, the track's still green.
17:05But yes, you're absolutely right, Chris.
17:06We saw plenty of queuing as we head towards turn one.
17:10We see the number seven, a tier called Nagi.
17:12Another lock-up towards turn one, which says to me again,
17:14still the grip ramping up quite quickly.
17:17The trouble boards here, Phil Nile, for Campos Racing.
17:21Let's see if he had an issue down towards turn one as well.
17:23Double front lock-up again.
17:24Yeah, again, just says to me,
17:25circuit really, really not where the drivers want it to be yet.
17:28That'll, the grip, the rub will go down.
17:31The dust will be blown off as these drivers go around.
17:33It's going to get more and more cars on circuit.
17:35Towards the end of the session,
17:36it'll feel closer to what it will be like in qualifying.
17:37But it's another challenge, Chris,
17:39that the drivers have to deal with,
17:40and the teams as well in qualifying.
17:42Here's the issue for Matteo Di Pagno.
17:43He went a long way off the circuit, didn't he?
17:45I think he might have actually made contact with a barrier as well.
17:47He took both boards out,
17:49and I think, probably, like you said,
17:51maybe made contact with a barrier,
17:52which is where the front wing damage came in.
17:54Matry Karadzic, one of four drivers,
17:56making his debut at the circuit,
17:57and running wide there.
17:58Yeah, one of the first drivers to go beyond track limits
18:00at turn four, that was.
18:02That's one of the main positions,
18:03main parts of the circuit,
18:04where we see drivers exploring
18:06and going over track limits by accident.
18:08He's out and off, isn't he?
18:09Garth Bias has gone...
18:11He wasn't looking for a gap there at all, was he?
18:13He was way wide at 14.
18:14I wonder if he'd gone off on the entry
18:16to the corner,
18:18into the last corner.
18:19Someone's had a double front lock-up,
18:20I assume, up ahead as well.
18:22Yeah.
18:23Yeah, this is where the more astute teams
18:25and engineers will be getting on the radio
18:26to their drivers
18:26if they haven't been out
18:27or if they're just starting a flying lap,
18:28saying,
18:29lots of double front lock-ups at turn one.
18:31Break early, break with caution.
18:32You can see there's a cut on that tyre as well.
18:34The front right tyre of Di Pagno
18:36as the front wings hit it.
18:37So, unfortunately, for Di Pagno,
18:38there you go.
18:38You can see the cut on the tyre.
18:39He probably won't get
18:41a huge amount more running
18:42in this session
18:42because that gouge in the tyre
18:44certainly won't be doing him any favours.
18:46In fact, it's all the way down
18:47to the canvas there.
18:47Has he got suspension damage
18:48or is that just small adjustments
18:50because of the front wing?
18:51But, yeah, you mentioned
18:52that tyre's...
18:53But you've only got one set
18:55of hard tyres
18:55and the rest of the tyres available
18:57are the medium tyres,
18:57which the teams will be hoping
18:59to save for qualifying,
19:01which, again,
19:01shows how much a mistake in practice
19:03can have knock-on effects
19:04for the rest of your weekend.
19:05Yeah, it was a shame for Di Paolo.
19:07He had a really good Silverstone
19:09but didn't quite replicate
19:11that form at Spa.
19:12However, he did win
19:13from pole position here
19:14in Formula Regional last year.
19:16Freddy Slater also taking a victory.
19:19Enzo De Ligny took a pole position
19:21and a podium at that event
19:22here last year as well.
19:25Alessandro Giusti,
19:26difficult times, isn't it?
19:27It's been for the MP team
19:29overall this season.
19:30They get to get a podium.
19:33It's been a bit of a difficult run
19:35for them.
19:36However, Tuka Tapanen
19:37was a podium finisher here.
19:39Oh, now we've got an off.
19:41That's Salim Hanna, I think,
19:43who has gone into the barriers
19:45on the exit of Turn 5.
19:47Salim Hanna making his second appearance
19:49in Formula 3
19:51and his practice session
19:52coming to an early end there
19:54with an off on the exit
19:56of the fifth turn.
19:57Really not an ideal start
19:58to the weekend for AEX
19:59and Salim Hanna.
20:00Hopefully he's OK.
20:01It's not a hugely fast corner there,
20:04but when you're going up
20:05and accelerating out of a corner
20:06it can always cause an issue.
20:08It looks like fairly substantial damage.
20:11Let's see Salim moving in the car.
20:13You can see he's just touched a wheel
20:15in the gravel there.
20:16There's a small gravel strip
20:18on the exit
20:20and once you get two wheels in that
20:22the barrier comes up
20:24very quickly indeed.
20:25Yeah, he was racing here earlier this month
20:28in Formula Regional.
20:30The driver mentor by Juan Pablo Montoya
20:33and Salim Hanna
20:35has had some very good results
20:37over the course of the last year.
20:38Let's find out what happened then
20:40with Salim Hanna.
20:42Going through turn four.
20:44Turn five is the next corner
20:46where the issue was.
20:48Are we going to see
20:48what happened?
20:50Oh, he just catched the end of it.
20:51Yeah, you can see he's just
20:52two wheels in the gravel,
20:54gravel on the circuit.
20:55Once you're in the gravel,
20:56unfortunately that means
20:57that there's no grip available for you.
20:59Car bottoms out on the curb
21:00and a one-way ticket to the barrier.
21:03Salim Hanna would have been hoping
21:04to get some decent laps in this weekend,
21:05get acquainted with the Formula 3 car
21:08once again
21:09and also at a different circuit.
21:10Good to see Salim out the car.
21:12He's physically okay.
21:13Team going to have to do some work
21:14to get that car fixed up
21:15for quality later on.
21:16Shouldn't be an issue.
21:17Front on contact means
21:18that those parts
21:19can be fairly easily replaced
21:21but preparation-wise,
21:23not ideal.
21:24No, it's really not.
21:27We can see the Rodins
21:28making their way back round.
21:30Badawer back on the podium
21:32last time out.
21:33Something that he needed.
21:34He'd gone on a difficult run of form.
21:37Claro also getting a podium.
21:38It was a double podium finish for them.
21:40Let's see what Badawer's been up to.
21:42Oh, you can see
21:43how little grip there is
21:44available out there.
21:45Understeer in the middle of the corner
21:46turns to oversteer
21:47and then, oh my goodness!
21:49That was basically a crash.
21:51Yeah.
21:51Without hitting anything.
21:52I think that's probably
21:53exactly what happened
21:54to Jose Garfias as well
21:55when we picked that one up.
21:56Yeah, the circuit seems
21:58unusually dusty actually
21:59because the Hungarine
22:00does get some use
22:01outside of the Formula 1 weekends
22:02but every drive we've jumped
22:04or had a slow-mo with
22:05you can see the dust
22:06being kicked up
22:06and as soon as you get
22:07half a tyre off
22:08the racing line
22:10you're then on that dust
22:11and debris and dirt
22:12and off the rubbered in
22:14or the partially rubbered in
22:15racing line
22:15and then you've basically got
22:17a huge drop-off in grip
22:19and we've seen the double front
22:21lock-ups down towards
22:22turn one as well.
22:23That's always a case
22:24where the drivers predict
22:24how much grip there is,
22:25slam the brakes
22:26and there's less
22:27and then you see
22:27both front tyres stationary
22:29which doesn't help
22:31their longevity.
22:32Now that's not a big issue
22:33because these hard tyres
22:35that are only used
22:36for practice
22:36they don't need to use them
22:37again after this session
22:38but if you've then got
22:39flat spots for the rest
22:40of the session
22:40it's not exactly ideal
22:41in terms of getting
22:42your eye in ready
22:43for qualifying.
22:44Jin Nakamura
22:45became the first
22:46Japanese winner
22:47in Formula 3
22:48in five seasons
22:50getting a win
22:51in this hugely
22:52competitive championship
22:53a very good thing
22:54let's hear what he had to say
22:55coming into the weekend.
22:58I think
22:59yeah everyone
23:00has very good skill
23:01and speed
23:02which is
23:03the most
23:06tough part
23:07I would say
23:07the field is pretty
23:10tight
23:10every time
23:11so 20 cars
23:1425 cars
23:15in one second
23:16or something
23:16which is so tough
23:17so
23:19I mean
23:19yeah everyone
23:21has very good skill
23:22which is the hardest
23:23point
23:24for me.
23:26Jin Nakamura
23:27absolutely right there
23:28he sits 12th
23:29in the championship
23:30now after that
23:31sprint race win
23:32and a really good result
23:32for high tech
23:33it was their first win
23:34of the season
23:35but he's absolutely
23:36right isn't he
23:37Piers
23:37I mean
23:37you look down
23:38down the championship
23:40Tuka Tapanen
23:40is a champion
23:41in single seaters
23:43he's won over
23:43in the Middle East
23:44Mateo Kornagi
23:45has won
23:45back-to-back championships
23:46coming into this
23:47and he had a
23:47great weekend
23:49it's just so
23:50so competitive
23:51out there
23:51I've spoke to many
23:52people
23:53throughout Paddocks
23:54about this
23:55getting in the top 12
23:56and qualifying
23:57is so difficult
23:57because you can go
23:58through 20 plus
23:59drivers
24:00and they've all
24:01won some kind
24:02of major championship
24:03or had a major
24:04championship podium
24:05throughout their career
24:06absolutely
24:06that's the reason
24:07also we've got
24:08a truly international
24:09grid of drivers
24:10so you've got
24:11the best drivers
24:12of their age group
24:13from Asia
24:13the best drivers
24:14of their age group
24:15in Europe
24:15the best drivers
24:16of their age group
24:16from the Americas
24:17as well
24:18with our current
24:18championship leader
24:19being from
24:19the United States
24:20as well
24:21you've got drivers
24:22from South America
24:23like Fernando Barrichello
24:24who's been right up
24:25there in Euro Formula Open
24:26and every single driver
24:28you put them on the grid
24:28in any other championship
24:29realistically in the world
24:31and they'll be one
24:31of the best drivers
24:32on the grid
24:32and you put them
24:33all together
24:33in FIA Formula 3
24:35with 30 cars
24:35three drivers per team
24:37you know
24:38only top 12 reverse
24:39and it's no wonder
24:40that you end up
24:41with such close
24:42qualifying sessions
24:42and such incredible racing
24:43but that's the challenge
24:45is because you've got
24:46so many drivers
24:46of such quality
24:48if you make a mistake
24:50in qualifying
24:50it's not like you're
24:51going to get away with it
24:52because there's 29
24:53other drivers
24:53that are probably
24:54going to put a good lap in
24:55so it's so competitive
24:58it makes it really difficult
24:59if you're not absolutely
25:00on your game
25:01every single weekend
25:01but ultimately
25:02in Formula 3
25:03you've got an excellent jacket
25:05I wonder who he's supporting
25:06in Formula 3 this weekend
25:08if you've got
25:10I'm completely thrown by that
25:12wow
25:12what an incredible
25:13jacket tie
25:15glasses combination
25:17where was I Chris?
25:18oh yeah
25:20because you've got
25:20so many drivers
25:21so close together
25:22we're looking for
25:23the best drivers
25:24of their generation
25:25to promote to Formula 2
25:26to then do the same thing again
25:27and then find the best drivers
25:28in Formula 2
25:29to then promote to Formula 1
25:30because ultimately
25:31that's the lad
25:31that we're on
25:32for Formula 1
25:33all these drivers
25:34I would say
25:35I don't know
25:35if it's an assumption
25:36but probably
25:36all have visions
25:37of Formula 1
25:38world championships
25:39race wins
25:40and ultimately
25:40to get to that stage
25:41to even have the opportunity
25:42for those in Formula 1
25:43you have to show
25:44that you are the best
25:44of the crop
25:45and this is the best
25:46of the best
25:47and why we love
25:48Formula 3 every weekend
25:49absolutely
25:50you've got Leo Fornaroli
25:52going out in FP1 today
25:53along with Frederic Vesti
25:54Paul Aaron
25:55amongst others
25:56Formula 3 graduates
25:57going right up there
25:58good to see Ernesto Rivera
25:59let's talk a little bit
26:00about him
26:01before we come to
26:03Mattia Kornnag
26:04as well
26:04two drivers who had
26:05very good weekends
26:05last time out
26:06Ernesto Rivera
26:07has been one of the most
26:08impressive for me
26:09this season
26:10coming into this
26:11championship
26:12we've seen him
26:12do well
26:14in other championships
26:15but he's now starting
26:17to be a real possibility
26:19for a championship podium
26:20if not an outside bet
26:22for challenging
26:23Ugo and Freddy
26:24as well
26:25a feature race win
26:26that's a big result
26:28for him
26:28and he's in a
26:29very competitive
26:30Campos racing team
26:31as well
26:32and really holding his own
26:33as a Red Bull junior
26:34oh yeah
26:34well
26:35Ernesto Rivera
26:36we know
26:37he's been strong
26:37in his previous
26:38categories
26:40interestingly actually
26:40completely unrelated
26:41but I was chatting
26:42to Ryan Norberg
26:43who's the 10 time
26:44US pro karting champion
26:46this week
26:47is a podcast
26:48I do unrelated
26:49to any of this
26:50and he actually
26:51I didn't talk about
26:53anything to the Formula 3
26:54and he said
26:54you know
26:54he was talking about
26:55the transition
26:56when drivers go
26:56from junior karting
26:57to senior karting
26:58now it's a big step up
26:59and there's a similar
27:00step up
27:00when drivers go
27:01from Formula Regional
27:02to Formula 3
27:02but he said
27:03some drivers
27:04can just get
27:05the next step up
27:06quickly
27:07and then junior karting
27:09senior karting
27:09you often see drivers
27:11trying too hard
27:12and making brash moves
27:13being a bit immature
27:14and he said
27:15Ernesto Rivera
27:16is one of the best
27:16he's ever seen
27:17going from junior
27:17to senior
27:18and said
27:18he just seemed
27:19to click straight away
27:20he was felt right at home
27:21he was calm
27:23behind the wheel
27:23had the pace
27:24and we've seen that again
27:25this season
27:26in going from Formula
27:27you know
27:28his previous driving
27:29now into Formula 3
27:30the big step up
27:31into the Formula 1
27:33weekends
27:33and Ernesto Rivera
27:34joined late
27:35let's not forget
27:36injured in the
27:36pre-season events
27:38at the Formula Regional
27:39Oceania
27:41didn't do the first round
27:42so joined
27:43didn't get to do
27:43pre-season testing
27:44so very much
27:45on the back foot
27:45but has really
27:46come in strong
27:47and looked comfortable
27:49in F3 this season
27:50and has now taken
27:50a feature in
27:51well let's
27:52catch the thoughts
27:53of Brad Joy's
27:54team principal
27:55at Van Amersfoort Racing
27:56coming into the weekend
28:01it's very flowing
28:02you've got to be
28:04you've got to have
28:04a really good car
28:05in the middle sector
28:06to make the most of it
28:08and
28:10yeah
28:10you need a clean lap
28:12as well
28:12because obviously
28:1330 cars on the track
28:14here
28:15if you pick up
28:16some traffic
28:18in the middle sector
28:19then it can really
28:19ruin your lap
28:20so
28:20you need a little bit
28:21of luck
28:22with that
28:22but also
28:25yeah
28:25that middle sector
28:26is one corner
28:27after another
28:28so it's
28:29it's really important
28:30to have a good
28:31balance
28:32through there
28:34Brad Joy's there
28:35his drivers
28:36Hiyu Yamakoshi
28:38Enzo Deligni
28:39and Bruno Del Pino
28:40I'm sure Bruno Del Pino
28:41enjoyed last Sunday evening
28:43Mateo Kornagi
28:44maybe not so much
28:45what could you possibly
28:47be referring to Chris
28:48exactly that
28:49what could you possibly
28:49be referring to
28:50but back to Formula 3
28:51we were touching a bit earlier
28:53I don't think I quite finished
28:53we finished our discussion
28:55didn't we Chris
28:55we saw a bit of
28:57messiness
28:58in the final
28:58in the leading up
29:00to the final run
29:00of qualifying as Spa
29:01because people were trying
29:02to get a tow
29:03and unfortunately
29:03we then saw
29:05penalties galore
29:06we've seen messiness
29:07in qualifying here
29:09before
29:0924 was I think
29:10actually worse
29:11than last year
29:13but we have seen
29:14drivers queuing up
29:15getting each other's way
29:15blocking
29:17and it's actually
29:19less because drivers
29:20are looking for a tow
29:21but more because
29:21they're looking for a space
29:22and as we just heard
29:24from the team principal
29:25there of Anelmosport Racing
29:26that middle sector
29:27where all the corners are
29:28lots of corners
29:29that rely on
29:29good aerodynamic grip
29:31you can't afford
29:32to be up behind
29:32another driver
29:34absolutely not
29:35and it's why
29:36when we get to the races
29:37as well
29:37it is a case of
29:38holding on to the tyres
29:40I mean we've used
29:41the medium tyre here
29:42several times
29:42but it becomes
29:44very difficult
29:45I'm sure
29:45to keep that tyre
29:47underneath you
29:47for the lengths
29:48for the 19 or 24 laps
29:50we're going to have
29:51this weekend
29:52yeah
29:5230 cars
29:53all going out
29:54and qualifying
29:54at the same time
29:55which they almost
29:55always do
29:56we'll see
29:57as we see
29:58Enzo Deligny
30:01Engaged
30:02absolutely cool
30:02turning on race mode
30:04there
30:04but yeah
30:05I mean you've got
30:064.3 kilometres
30:08to fit 30 cars
30:09you know
30:10150 metres a car
30:11or something
30:12which is not a huge amount
30:13if you're that close
30:13to a car in front
30:14in qualifying
30:15you're going to be
30:16struggling with front grip
30:17and therefore
30:18everyone will be
30:18trying to look for
30:19space on circuit
30:20to have no distractions
30:22no issues
30:23no throwing gravel
30:24in their face
30:24if they run wide
30:25and also
30:26let's not forget
30:27that you know
30:29we've had drivers
30:30and teams
30:31go out in the gaff
30:32haven't we
30:33offset their strategy
30:34I think that's something
30:35that could be valuable
30:36this weekend
30:36I think we've seen
30:37VAR do it
30:38at one event
30:39this year
30:39we've seen
30:39I think ART
30:41did it as well
30:41if I remember rightly
30:42will we see
30:43some of the top teams
30:44maybe even try
30:44and go for that
30:45I think the last run
30:46in qualifying
30:46everyone will go out
30:47with 2 or 3 minutes
30:48or 5 minutes
30:49to go
30:49to try and get
30:49that last lap in
30:50but the middle runs
30:52to get a banker in
30:52if you've got the
30:53space to track to yourself
30:54as long as the team
30:55can get the ties
30:56on and off
30:57and get you back out
30:57again for the final run
30:58might be worth
30:59you tillering
31:00sometimes comes down
31:01to where you're
31:01in the pit lane
31:02doesn't it
31:02I mean when all
31:0330 cars go out
31:04together
31:05then if you're
31:06at the back of the queue
31:07it's a bit of a challenge
31:08to make your way through
31:09so that can sometimes
31:11play a part
31:12yep
31:12we see you too
31:13Taito Kato
31:14what a great character
31:16he's had some
31:18good results this season
31:19and a much
31:20better run of things
31:21last weekend
31:22than what he had
31:23at Silverstone
31:24P5
31:24P6
31:25for him
31:26double points
31:26score
31:27fastest lap
31:27in the feature race
31:28as well
31:29part of an ART team
31:31who could be one
31:32to watch this weekend
31:33given their history
31:33at this circuit
31:34yeah you mentioned
31:35the pit lane order
31:36it's allocated each weekend
31:37by the FIA
31:38and the Formula 3
31:39organising
31:41basically
31:41I think they rotate
31:42throughout the season
31:43to make sure no one
31:43gets an advantage
31:44but this weekend
31:45prime position
31:46in the pit lane
31:46Roden
31:47they're at pit exit
31:48so they'll have
31:48the easiest run out
31:49so they might
31:50not choose to go
31:51in the gap
31:51because they can
31:52control their own space
31:53they can back everyone up
31:54and then drive into a gap
31:55but the likes of
31:56Prima, Hitek,
31:57AX and Dams
31:58who are at the start
31:59of the pit lane
31:59to be fair
32:00Trident are a bang
32:01in the middle as well
32:02they are probably
32:03going to be
32:04ones that might
32:05be looking to do
32:06that alternative
32:06run plan
32:08in qualifying
32:08because they haven't
32:09really got a choice
32:10because at the back
32:10of the pit lane
32:11everyone pulls out
32:11at the same time
32:13and they won't then
32:14be able to
32:14just drive into
32:16clean air
32:17that Roden
32:18out of the luxury
32:19of by being at
32:19the end of the pit lane
32:20yeah
32:21bit of a lengthy
32:22clear up this one
32:23isn't it
32:23Salim Hanna
32:24his car looks
32:25pretty wedged
32:25in the barriers
32:27and then it's
32:27not just
32:28getting the car out
32:30but it is
32:31the repairs
32:31needed to the
32:32barriers as well
32:32you'll see the top
32:33left the clock
32:34does keep ticking
32:34as it stands
32:3512 and a half
32:36minutes to go
32:36and also
32:37they have to
32:37sweep all the
32:38gravel off the
32:38circuit as well
32:39because right on
32:40the exit of the
32:40circuit where the
32:41gravel is kicked
32:41onto the racing
32:42line
32:42if they didn't
32:43sweep that up
32:43then it's
32:44genuinely like
32:45driving onto
32:45marbles like
32:46onto ice
32:46and that would
32:47be unsafe
32:47so the Marshall
32:48team doing a
32:49great job of
32:50getting us
32:50available to go
32:51racing
32:51we look like
32:51we are moments
32:52away from
32:53basically a
32:55qualifying simulation
32:56but on a hard
32:56tyre here
32:57because 12 minutes
32:58to go
32:58this would be
32:59something similar
33:00to what we'll
33:00be having in
33:01qualifying
33:01and everyone
33:02going out
33:02pretty much
33:02everyone going
33:03out together
33:03yeah and I
33:05can tell you
33:05from when you're
33:07out there in
33:08a place like
33:08testing hearing
33:0930 cars all
33:10fire up at the
33:10same time and
33:11go is one of
33:13the best things
33:14of the season
33:14and off we go
33:15green light at
33:16the end of pit
33:17lane we've had
33:17to wait a little
33:18while some drivers
33:19just pulling over
33:20from practice
33:21starts there
33:22getting ready to
33:23go as yesterday
33:23might have to
33:24wait a little
33:24while as the
33:25queue filters its
33:26way out
33:28but we are now
33:29back green
33:30it's been a good
33:3010 minutes or so
33:31hasn't it
33:32it's happening
33:32in one of the
33:33cars leading us
33:33out the pit
33:34lane
33:34you mentioned
33:34the practice
33:35starts there
33:35we saw
33:36Alessandro's
33:36Eusti driver
33:37that was up
33:38there in the
33:38championship last
33:39year but
33:39currently sitting
33:39in 18th
33:40he's having a
33:40poor season
33:41by his own
33:42standards isn't
33:42he would have
33:43hoped for more
33:44this year
33:44but practice
33:46starts I expect
33:47we'll see drivers
33:47having practice
33:48starts in this
33:49session towards
33:50the end as well
33:51in their final
33:51runs or have
33:53they may have
33:54already done them
33:55because here
33:56long run
33:57from the start
33:59boxes to
34:00turn one
34:01so a good
34:01start round
34:02here is more
34:03valuable than
34:04somewhere like
34:04Spa which is
34:05quite a short
34:05run to turn
34:06one and a bad
34:07start can be
34:07exacerbated
34:08this was
34:08Freddie Slater
34:09had a bad
34:09start didn't
34:10he from pole
34:10position in the
34:11feature race
34:12dropped down to
34:12third place
34:13could have been
34:13worse he
34:14positioned his
34:14car well but
34:15the launch
34:16wasn't good
34:16and that will
34:17be something the
34:18drivers will be
34:18keen to do
34:19ultimately
34:19there's a number
34:20of jobs and a
34:21number of things
34:21you want to tick
34:22off the list over a
34:23race weekend in
34:24Formula 3 or
34:24any single
34:25seat race weekend
34:25number one good
34:27qualifying position
34:28that gives you
34:28yourself a good
34:29opportunity to have
34:31a good race without
34:31having to get in
34:33amongst the melee
34:33lowers your risk and
34:34gives you a good
34:35opportunity job to
34:36get away from the
34:37line well there's no
34:38point qualifying on
34:39pole if you then
34:40drop four or five
34:41positions on on the
34:42grid and then have
34:42a poor first lap
34:43then job three of
34:44course is race well
34:45to the end and try
34:46and maximize your
34:46result but those two
34:48things qualifying in
34:49the starts arguably are
34:50the biggest determining
34:51factors on how your
34:53race is going to end
34:54up yeah here it is a a
34:57a big thing as we see
34:59chin has been uh noted
35:01isn't he there for
35:02failing to follow the
35:03race director's
35:03instructions practice
35:05start infringement now
35:06i wonder if he's not
35:07quite correctly got into
35:09the box at the end of
35:11the pit lane uh well
35:14let's have a look then
35:15at a lap of the hungaring
35:17piers it's a completely
35:18different challenge isn't
35:19it to start freddie
35:21say to just making his
35:22way through the queue a
35:23little bit you can see
35:25what the challenge is for
35:26drivers here it's to try
35:27and get a bit of space
35:28freddie slater has now
35:29done that piers let's go
35:31for a full lap with
35:32second in the championship
35:32yeah let's run on board
35:33freddie slater driver
35:34that's looking to close
35:35that one point gap to a
35:36good chicken as we head
35:37downhill headwind towards
35:39turn one we've seen some
35:40double lockups at turn one
35:41and we've got a lockup on
35:42the right hand side for
35:43freddie slater there but
35:44makes the apex still just
35:45about traction out of one
35:47very important as we still
35:48head downhill towards turn
35:50two turn one the main
35:51overtaking opportunity but
35:52you can also overtake
35:53inside and outside at
35:55turn two you don't need
35:56to make the apex at turn
35:58two you can run around
35:58the outside as we now
35:59jump and watch the 17 of
36:02Pedro Clara going to the
36:03middle sector this is a
36:04very important section of
36:05the circuit chicane jump
36:06over the curve on the
36:07right hand side and the
36:08left miss the first one
36:09we hit the second this
36:10time qualifying are we
36:11hoping to hit both then
36:12this long corner here the
36:14left hander which
36:14immediately turns into the
36:15right that's the eight
36:16nine section then we go
36:18flat out through turn 10
36:20which is basically just
36:20setting you up the entry
36:22of turn 11 very fast
36:23entry carry the minimum
36:24speed watch out track
36:25limits on the exit tail
36:27wind there this weekend
36:28so that pushes the
36:29driver's wide the new
36:30DRS zone down towards
36:31turn 12 an opportunist
36:33overtaking opportunity I
36:35would say and then the
36:36technical long corners of
36:37turn 13 the left hander
36:39and then 14 the final
36:41corner of the circuit we've
36:42got DRS detection point on
36:44the entry of turn 14 which
36:46then gives you the DRS
36:47down towards turn one our
36:49main overtaking opportunity
36:50let's see where Clara goes
36:52for Rodin over the line
36:54P3 one tenth back from
36:56Ugachuku but there's lots
36:58of improvements coming in
36:59including from his
36:59teammate Baddowair
37:00Christian Ho jumps himself
37:02to P11 we saw him finish
37:04in 11th place last weekend
37:07here comes Noah Stromstead
37:08through the final corner the
37:10number four Trident up to
37:12the line P7 for him so
37:14qualifying simulation well
37:16and truly underway Piers as
37:17we hop on board with Noah
37:19Stromstead having just
37:20completed that lap oh look
37:21who's at the front of the
37:22field again Ugachuku
37:23followed by Saito good
37:24lap from Nicola
37:25LaCorte actually going
37:27third place Ernesto Rivera
37:29in the second of the
37:30campuses goes fourth for
37:31now again this is on a
37:34hard tyre at the end of a
37:35session track still green
37:36we've got a lot of running
37:37between now in terms of F2
37:39F1 and other sessions
37:40between now and
37:41qualifying so the circuit
37:42will evolve this isn't going
37:43to be directly comparable to
37:46qualifying but if you can
37:47have got a good feel now it
37:48can put you in good confident
37:50position for qualifying
37:51Taito Carter looking pretty
37:52quick in sector one fastest so
37:54far he was seeing us seeing
37:56him earlier wasn't he yeah it
37:58looks like he might go up the
38:00field and he does P3 but all
38:02these times might be beaten by
38:04sprint race winner the tenth
38:05different winner of the season
38:07we're getting close to breaking a
38:10record there Jin Nakamura heading
38:12through the final two corners now
38:13let's see what he does over the
38:14line please yeah here we go last
38:16corner these long corners is a
38:17few different ways you can take
38:18it some drivers tend to dive in
38:21early get to the apex hug it all
38:22the way around other drivers go
38:23wide and cut back for a good exit
38:25but Jin Nakamura high on confidence
38:27and good pace so far let's also not
38:29forget Maciej Gwadish our sprint
38:31sorry feature race winner after
38:33finishing fourth on the road is
38:35is third as well for ART and ART
38:37was strong here last year podium
38:38with Tuka Tafferden who's moved to
38:40the MP team this season they're
38:42currently sitting third and fifth
38:44with Gwadish and Kato so they're
38:46feeling strong as well yeah ART
38:48looking good aren't they it's
38:51Rivera isn't it the other red
38:52ball junior lock-up into turn one
38:54double lock-up on Rivera's lap
38:56in fourth place at the time he's
38:58now sitting in seventh so still more
38:59time there another double lock-up
39:01Fernando Barrichello down towards
39:03turn one for AIX is it a bumpy
39:05entry down there the fact it's
39:07downhill or is this track
39:08conditions you think mostly
39:09it's a combination of factors I
39:11think it's the fact that it's
39:12certainly low grip at the moment
39:15circuit is what we'd say in the
39:16industry it's green which means
39:17there's not a lot of rubber down
39:18there's quite a lot of dust it's a
39:19little bit bumpy but I think it's
39:21just drivers carrying a lot of
39:22speed hitting the brakes a bit too
39:23hard and not accounting for the
39:24track conditions looks like we've
39:27got more improvements on the way
39:29then Pedro Claro podium last weekend
39:32for him the Brazilian driver has just
39:35set the fastest first sector of this
39:37session bad aware just a tenth
39:39behind him Christian Ho on an
39:41improvement likewise Enzo de Ligny as
39:43well let's see Claro through the
39:45middle section yeah through the
39:47chicane jumping over the curves
39:48found both this time we've followed
39:50him last time through there and he
39:51missed the first and this time he
39:52hit both so that's why he's going
39:53quicker and this is an example of how
39:55much the circuit is getting quicker
39:57and quicker lap on lap because these
39:59tires they've had the best they've
40:00already done a run come in the pits
40:01they've done another flying lap and
40:03they're going for a third time and
40:04in theory the tires will be falling
40:06away but drivers still being able to
40:08improve as Claro went purple that's
40:10been beaten in the first sector by
40:12Freddie Slater Brando Badouair now
40:15purple in the middle Claro still
40:16improving on his best lap Slater still
40:19up on the fast slap from Nakamura but
40:21it is Badouair that's fast in the
40:22middle so the Rodin's looking pretty
40:24good in that all-important middle
40:25sector where a lot of the medium and
40:27low speed corners are where most of
40:29the corners are we head out onto the
40:30start finish straight where will this
40:31put Pedro Claro provisionally at the
40:34top for practice but immediately
40:35beaten by his teammate by two and a
40:36half tenths and Slater you can see
40:38missed the apex in the middle there as
40:40he jumped on board he was soaring
40:41away at the wheel don't think he'll
40:43improve in the final he does still
40:44improve in the final sector but you
40:45could see how much just getting
40:47half a car off the racing line
40:49affects the amount of grip you have
40:50mid corner still a tenth and a half
40:52clear of the Rodin duo yellow flag is
40:55out we're hearing a car has stopped
40:56and there's our answer Noah
40:57Stromstead the number four that's
40:59down the hill I think is it into the
41:01final three corners yes where the
41:03additional DRS zone is and it doesn't
41:06look like there's any visible damage
41:08on the car I wonder if that's just a
41:09technical issue and Noah Stromstead
41:10has had to pull over on the entry to
41:14turn 12 Freddie Slater just went
41:17quickest before that yellow flag this
41:19might take us to the end of the session
41:21now battle where it is in second place
41:23then a big gap back to Claro four
41:26tenths back red flag is out that's I
41:29believe will be that three and a half
41:31to go Freddie Slater 133.947 going
41:35quickest in practice once again that's
41:37three rounds in a row now where Freddie
41:39Slater has been the quickest driver in
41:42practice and he is looking to make it
41:44three pole positions in a row as well we
41:48saw three consecutive poles from
41:51Teofil Nile which matched the record
41:53of Rafa Kamara last season and Logan
41:56Sargent in 2020 are we going to see a
41:59fourth driver take three pole positions
42:01in a row very good session for high
42:03tech and Jim Nakamura what a win can
42:05do for your confidence yeah it's it's
42:07confidence but also I think genuine
42:09pace that the high-tech team have found
42:12especially with Nakamura Nakamura being
42:14able to exploit it as well because
42:15they've looked more and more
42:16consistently towards the front of the
42:19field and they know that they can
42:21they're a strong team at high-tech
42:22aren't they with they took a couple of
42:24wins last year with Noah
42:25struck no not instructed Martinia
42:29Stenshaw who's now moved on to F2
42:32but yeah you're right Chris I think
42:33that that is probably going to be the
42:34end of this session but in impressive
42:36from Slater once again clearly finding
42:39good rhythm we heard from him in that
42:41interview he said that the team of not
42:42only got a good quick car over one lap
42:45but they've been able to just tweak the
42:46setup and the philosophy of the setup of
42:49the car to suit Freddy and his what he
42:51wants from the car as well as he feels
42:52more comfortable and that's just
42:53allowing him to go faster and faster
42:55topping practice session no indication
42:59you know no direct indication that
43:00he's going to be able to them in
43:01qualifying but if you are going to
43:03pick a favorite Slater's looking up
43:05there it's just remains to be seen
43:06whether he can then do that in
43:08qualifying and then find the race
43:09pace to be able to convert into what
43:11would be his first win in the
43:12championship this weekend who go down
43:14in P8 as well do you think he'll be
43:16affected much by that half a second
43:18off Freddy of course it was a session
43:20where they were using hard tires and
43:22sweeping the track up a bit but
43:23nevertheless Freddy Slater half a
43:25second quicker than his
43:26championship rival you'll take that
43:27it'll say to will take that but I
43:28don't think it would be too
43:29disappointed he was actually he did
43:31one run on the hard tire after the
43:33red flag the first of the red flags
43:34and then came in straight away
43:36everyone else went for a second run
43:37on that hard tire and found time as
43:39the circuit improved so not a huge
43:42huge issue but he'll be hoping he
43:45can find a bit of time because he
43:47clearly wasn't the fastest out on
43:49the circuit let's see what happened
43:50just looked like the steering was
43:52gone off so just the whole car
43:53just shut itself up unfortunately
43:54going into the final section of the
43:56lap well that's not what Noah
44:00strump said all the Trident team
44:02want going into qualifying right
44:04they'll have to address the issue
44:06here that appears to have hit Noah
44:08stromstead climbing out of the car
44:11for him and we'll just have to make
44:15sure everything's all okay for
44:17qualifying later practice session
44:20almost complete then Slater
44:22leading battle where Claro road
44:23him once again looking good aren't
44:26they they were quick last weekend
44:27and another circuit where they tend
44:30to go well at second and third
44:32yeah they seem like the rodents
44:33they're good in sort of low medium
44:36speed corners they've got a good
44:37balance they don't tend to top the
44:39speed trap so I would suggest that
44:41compared to other teams they lean on
44:43the side of high downforce this being
44:44a very high downforce circuit the
44:47teams and drivers will be choosing
44:49high downforce because there's only
44:51that one long straight down towards
44:53turn one so ultimately if you lose a
44:55bit down towards turn one you can
44:56probably gain it back and more in
44:58that middle sector we've got corners
44:59back to back to back since you turn
45:01into turn four you basically don't
45:02stop turning really until you get down
45:04towards turn 11 then you've got the
45:06two long 13 and 14 hairpins at the end
45:08of the lap which also require good
45:10mechanical and aerodynamic grip as
45:11well so very much on the chassis and
45:13the development side very much on the
45:15teams to give the drivers the balance
45:17that they want the grip that they want
45:18and also being able to make the
45:20Michelin tires sorry oh my goodness
45:22Pirelli sorry that's something we do
45:24this weekend apologies Pirelli tires
45:26and Formula 3 and Formula 2 and to get
45:28them working well in both over a lap
45:31and then over the race distance is
45:33going to be crucial we've already
45:34heard that from Freddie Slater as
45:35well that's what Trident looking to
45:36try and do just looking down the
45:38order Salim Hanno if you weren't with
45:39us for the whole session he brought
45:40out the red flag with a crash coming
45:43through five Barrichello had a time
45:44deleted Matteo de Power had that cut
45:47in his tire didn't he so that heavily
45:50affecting his session as the cars are
45:51going to make their way back round to
45:53the support pit entry which is on the
45:55entry to the penultimate corner and
45:57then the trolleys will come out onto
45:58the circuit and that kind of stole the
46:00show of practice last year didn't it
46:02the fans I think are already waiting
46:03for them to come out yeah stars of the
46:05show the trolleys carrying the tires
46:08of course the pit garage is reserved
46:10for Formula 1 a separate paddock for
46:12this and the tires have to be shipped
46:14from the the awnings and the trucks
46:16of the support paddock over to the
46:18pit lane ready for it and that's
46:19actually a good touch on that Chris
46:22there's a there's a chance not a big
46:25chance there is a chance of rain
46:26potentially on Sunday we're hearing
46:28and the teams as much as there are no
46:30scheduled pit stops and mandatory pit
46:32stops in Formula 3 if a race does get
46:35rain halfway through or it starts wet
46:37and dries out the drivers can come in
46:39and change from wet to dry or dry to
46:41wet tires and if that does happen
46:43mid-race then the teams do genuinely
46:45have a part to play in the results of
46:47their their drivers they will be
46:48practicing and will have practice pit
46:49stops even though it's not regular
46:51because that's an opportunity for the
46:52drivers and teams to gain some time in a
46:55mixed up race that's a very good
46:57point and we will see if that plays
47:00a part for now though let's go to the
47:03order of practice for you a practice
47:06that was affected by two red flags one
47:08lengthy red flag in the middle of the
47:09session Freddie Slater fastest ahead of
47:11Badouair Claro Nakamura in fourth and
47:14Niall De Ligny very encouraging p6 for him
47:17the court a life by seven chip leader
47:19Ugochicu in eighth Kilnagy up there in
47:21the top ten again ninth Gwadish in
47:24tenth we reverse the top twelve when it
47:26comes to qualifying so that's where you
47:27need to be Carter and Del Pino in that
47:30top twelve and Rivera sharp Tapanen Ho
47:33David Wharton Giusti Stromstead who
47:36came to a stop at the end and twelve
47:39there bringing out the second red flag
47:41in a conclusion to the session can also
47:45Lee finishes 21st then Gerard G who had
47:48a very good qualifying here last season
47:50in 22nd Finn McLaughlin 23rd Shin 24th
47:54Yamakashi 25th then Garfias Biron Bakhti
47:57Paolo Barrichello and Saleem Hanna who
48:01brought out the first of the red flags
48:02track limits for Barrichello to Paolo
48:04suffering a cut to the front right of his
48:07tyres that is all for practice here at
48:10Hungary for round seven we will be back
48:13to set the grids for both the sprint
48:15race and the feature race later when we
48:17have qualifying at 3pm local time and
48:20here they come what a sight to conclude
48:22on for practice we'll leave you there
48:24join us at three o'clock for qualifying
48:27for now it's goodbye
48:37a healthy one for the next year
48:38a very mandatory battle
48:39this is a long way to win
48:50the game against the Soap
48:50the sichern edge
48:50the game against the
48:54this is a long way to nobody
48:59to join us to be the the
49:01this is a great battle
49:02this is a big battle
