17:39Кимми Антонелли leads the way, then a dramatic cut to Charles Leclerc, who's been in good form in recent times,
17:44and was the fastest driver earlier on.
17:47However, he did conk out before the end of the session.
17:49And we didn't have five regular drivers in the session, so Кимми Антонелли was one of them.
17:55We welcome him back and into the car for the first time in Budapest, so we will see what Mercedes
18:02can do.
18:02George Russell, fifth earlier on, didn't look all that happy, was one of many drivers to have a meaty lock
18:07-up down at Turn 1.
18:08That bump really catching out of many drivers, mainly the Williams duo as well, who had monster lock-ups down
18:15there.
18:16But now Антонелли is in alongside Russell, and George can get a bench for the first time.
18:21Frederick Vestia earlier on.
18:26Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton in the top three earlier on.
18:30Then it was Isaac Hatcher, George Russell, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Vestia was top rookie in seventh.
18:37Top ten was Hülkenberg, Lindbergh, and Lawson.
18:40There is Hatcher trying to continue what has been a strong run of form in an overall strong season for
18:48his first season with the Red Bull team.
18:50That's not something that you can guarantee in recent times.
18:52He did say, with an interview recently, it's a good time to get in that second seat with the regulation
18:59change.
19:00He's had a great job of it so far.
19:02Hoping for just that little bit more performance.
19:05The wind has definitely picked up significantly.
19:08So four other drivers join Antonelli in this session, making their first forays onto the circuit soon.
19:15That is Oli Behrman, Oscar Piastri, Valtteri Bottas, and Franco Colopinto, who sat out earlier session.
19:23And Lance Stroll had a suspension failure, which doesn't look like it's anywhere near fixed at the moment.
19:29Sam Collins, our technical analyst, they are low on spares with a brand new spec of car, except in the
19:39brakes, Sam.
19:40Adrian, you were saying it's not entirely new.
19:43Yeah, I was listening to that interview, and he was saying it's not a new chassis, which I was pretty
19:49clearly told it was because that was the main area of weight reduction for the car.
19:52Also, that narrow nose will have required a new crash test, and I was told that they did have to
19:56do new impact testing on the chassis, which I would say is new.
20:00We'll have to wait and see.
20:01Maybe we're about to find out, could they revert Lance Stroll to the old spec?
20:05And because they haven't got enough parts to put both cars out in these new specification parts, we'll just have
20:10to see what they do, because that suspension failure is going to be a real concern to them.
20:15And again, manufacturing new parts because it's such a new car, all of those carbon fibre parts, they're all handmade.
20:21It's proper craftsmanship, every single part on every single F1 car is essentially different because it's been handmade by really
20:29skilled individuals.
20:30As we see the McLaren warming its tyres up down the pit lane, and that means that there is always
20:36just subtle differences.
20:38So just getting it right, it could be there was just one part that wasn't good enough, and that's why
20:41the suspension on Stroll's car went broken.
20:44Unfortunately, the news from the team is that there's not enough time to repair that car, and Lance will not
20:49be taking part in the second practice hour of the day.
20:52Practice start for the world champion.
20:54Yeah, I didn't know there was frantic work going on.
20:56So, yeah, shame, and a shame for Aston Martin, who lose 50% of their ability to learn in this
21:04session.
21:04So Fernando Alonso will once again be doing the legwork as they continue to evaluate their new components.
21:1213 cars taken to the track in the first couple of minutes.
21:16A few still waiting to...
21:19That was busy out there earlier on, wasn't it?
21:20A few cars tripping over each other.
21:22We want an idea for how dusty it is.
21:25Cadillac making its way into the second turn of the racetrack, picking a line, and then...
21:32It's like the car was on inters, just disappeared from view.
21:37On board with Charles Leclerc, his Ferrari has been sorted from the issues he suffered at the end of FP1.
21:43Stopped with about 10 minutes to go.
21:45Good news for Leclerc, who was quick, again, fighting the car, even on the end of his outlap through that
21:50final turn.
21:51So everyone's struggling for grit there as Leclerc winds it up on a new set of mediums.
21:57Let's see if we can find that bump.
22:00Not too bad with the Ferrari.
22:02Lewis Hamilton was complaining about the ride a lot earlier on.
22:05For Leclerc, there was a little bump at about 150 meters.
22:07He broke at about the 100 and about 80.
22:10There's a second one as Leclerc snaps his way through in towards turn two,
22:14using loads of road on the exit.
22:17Is there still a hesitation through turn three?
22:22Carrying plenty of speed in with a little dose of understeer for turn four
22:26before you find the long right-hander at five.
22:29Up the crest and a short burst to the lower-speed chicane.
22:34Clamber over those curbs.
22:35That was quite sparing, actually, from Leclerc.
22:37A little bit less on the exit.
22:42Eight and nine.
22:44Flat out through ten.
22:46Peel it back to the left-hand side into another very quick corner.
22:49And you flash through the middle sector split into three lower-speed turns to round out the lap.
22:55The first is the right-hander.
22:58Just about 90 degrees.
22:59Then you've got about 180 at the left-hander.
23:01Rear's starting to overheat now towards the end of the lap.
23:03The pit lane entry road will disappear on the right.
23:06And you can carry the speed into this final turn.
23:08But once again, we've got no grip.
23:10This time on the front axle.
23:12And Charles Leclerc crosses the line.
23:13It's a 120.1.
23:16One second.
23:17Slow than he managed earlier on.
23:18The driver fourth in the point standings.
23:21126 points coming into this weekend.
23:24He is behind George Russell with Lewis Hamilton.
23:26And Kimi Antonelli leads the way.
23:28Six times a Grand Prix winner in his second season of Formula One.
23:32204 points.
23:33The margin.
23:35No one was delighted with the performance of their car,
23:38even in the upper echelons earlier on.
23:41That is a nice start to the session.
23:43For Lewis Hamilton, an eight-time Grand Prix winner around this circuit.
23:46He's done a 19.6.
23:47And that is about as good as he managed earlier on.
23:50So it's within a couple of hundredths of the time that he managed.
23:54So complaining of the ride.
23:56Wasn't happy with the feeling of the car bouncing over some of the bumps.
24:00Makes it skittish and nervous.
24:02We saw a few of the drivers having to fight big sudden snaps
24:05as we watch Kimi Antonelli now getting his first feel of this car.
24:10Would have been listening in to Frederick Vesti.
24:12And George Russell, of course.
24:14Vesti was driving his car and keeping it nice and clean,
24:16as someone hasn't through turn 12 on the exit.
24:22Antonelli still fighting the rear.
24:24And all of the learning that the other drivers will have had
24:27through these final couple of turns
24:28of trying to realize how smooth you have to be on the turn in,
24:31especially for the final turn with the rear going round.
24:34Antonelli would have been sitting there.
24:36He would have been watching everyone slewing wide.
24:37But until you're there and you're strapped in feeling the grip,
24:40you don't know what it's going to be like.
24:42If something feels wrong on the car, it's extremely bad.
24:48Okay.
24:48Worse than P1, question?
24:51Yes.
24:52I have a look.
24:53It just feels broken.
24:55In turn 12, something with the front is wrong.
24:59So, was Pierre Gasly the man to spill it wide into the gravel?
25:04Possibly.
25:04That was turn 12 where the gravel was on.
25:07So, Gasly struggling with the front, he got understeer.
25:09And sounding pretty concerned over the radio.
25:13This is George Russell making his way past where Juan Pablo Montoya
25:18was watching trackside earlier on.
25:21And the flow to this place.
25:24We've got a sequence of corners and then the same again,
25:27but slightly faster.
25:28We see plenty of cars over the curb here.
25:32Lando Norris going wide there earlier on.
25:35That meant that Norris' time from FP1 was not representative.
25:39He was down in 11, having been strong on his performance run.
25:49And then we've got Russell making his way around the final corner.
25:54Now completing the lap.
25:55The driver third in the points.
25:57Goes up to fourth.
26:00Max Verstappen is on the medium tyre.
26:02Let's throw it into the left-hander of four.
26:04Measured through there, as you would expect.
26:06On the medium tyres, middle compound for the time being.
26:11And the neatness of this chicane.
26:14Slightly pushing beyond where he'd want to be.
26:17Correction to this part of the lap.
26:20Red Bull.
26:21Interesting to see the rear wing specification that they're running
26:24after the difficulties and having to revert to the old spec.
26:27Back a week ago in Belgium.
26:29Car is cleared nicely out of the way.
26:32It's the scarlet Ferrari.
26:35Always said throughout the years.
26:39And then turn 12.
26:41Leads in a very neat penultimate corner.
26:45Some of the corners have been...
26:49Trickier for the drivers than we've seen in other years.
26:51You still see the movement for Verstappen through that final turn.
26:54Nowhere near as bad as earlier on.
27:01And Russell said across the line of his lap,
27:03it was dreadful.
27:05And the balance isn't there.
27:06You can see the corrections being made.
27:09To Hajar again.
27:11Those inputs.
27:13At the wheel.
27:14Driver's not happy.
27:15Yeah, it's sort of dreadful.
27:16It's like the car is so out of balance.
27:21Plenty reporting a similar feedback.
27:23I wonder how much is the wind that we did see gusting around.
27:27And you can see the push there.
27:29That's...
27:30Wow, that's Piastri going a mile off in towards 11.
27:33So 12 then is where the gravel's kicked up by someone still.
27:36I want to see Hajar.
27:38Trying to get the fronts a little bit of a warm
27:40before heading into the final turn.
27:43Moodles of understeer as he picked up the throttle.
27:46That then pushes him off onto the Astro.
27:48Then the rears don't like it.
27:49Leclerc has a lockup at turn one.
27:51The drivers are working really hard
27:53on so many different parameters here.
27:55Brakes, tricky.
27:57Ride, tricky.
27:58Balance now, tricky.
27:59And I think the wind picking up
28:00has just meant that they're channeling different balances
28:03through different corners.
28:04And something else that's having a big effect
28:06on those balances is the temperature.
28:08It's 14 degrees centigrade cooler in this session
28:12than it was in FP1.
28:13It's quite significant.
28:14That had raced up to maybe 10 now, actually.
28:17But it was 41 in the start of FP1.
28:19Start of FP2, it's down to 31.
28:21So it's a significantly cooler session.
28:23And actually, a track temperature of 31.3 degrees centigrade
28:26is actually really quite cool for Formula 1,
28:29which normally operates a little bit warmer than that.
28:32It's cool for this place, isn't it?
28:34It's usually in the 50s at this place.
28:36Whoa!
28:37Catch it if you can.
28:38Arvid Lindblad, the 18-year-old.
28:40Back to being the only rookie in the field.
28:43Giving us a great illustration
28:44of how hard the drivers are having to work.
28:46He's on the hard tyre.
28:48But it is a sea of corrections out.
28:51Driving on ice.
28:52Turns into the left
28:53and the rear's just gone immediately.
28:55That's been a natural trajectory for so many.
28:57Let's see if Norris can complete his lap.
28:58Visor can then, with two corners to go.
29:02The right.
29:02Start oversteering about now.
29:05Neat and tidy.
29:06That's working better for Norris.
29:08Now, how much do you tiptoe the entry this year?
29:10He's pushed it too much.
29:11And immediately, the rear's going and going and going.
29:14And the lap's gone.
29:16Norris has been quick all the way through the day.
29:17He can't put a clean lap together.
29:19Can I tell you Kimi Antonelli's reaction
29:20to the grip level?
29:22He's just started his weekend.
29:23He's 10 minutes in.
29:24He's like, I almost spun twice on braking.
29:27What is going on?
29:28There you go.
29:29I almost spun twice on braking.
29:29What is going on?
29:30Yeah, copy.
29:31I think we should box a drop a bit of air of balance.
29:34That's not what you think.
29:36No, but I keep blocking the rear.
29:40So a couple of things to observe.
29:43We've had a couple of shock pole positions here
29:45because of temperature changes
29:46in recent times.
29:482022, George Russell taking pole position
29:51completely against the form of that season.
29:54Charles Leclerc last year around here.
29:56Similar thing.
29:58And again, they're battling
29:59what they expected to find out there.
30:02Huge amount of work being done behind the wheel.
30:08Bono saying on the radio to Kimi,
30:10let's take out a bit of front wing.
30:12Kimi saying, but it feels like it's rear locking.
30:14So it's before you really start to put
30:18front aero balance on the car.
30:19So you start to load it up laterally.
30:22Bono is obviously looking at the numbers,
30:23thinking we're overbalanced.
30:24You're getting a lot of overstay.
30:25So you take out a bit of front wing,
30:27you neutralize the car.
30:28But Kimi's just feeling that chattering
30:29of the rear tires
30:31on the deceleration phase.
30:33And that's the communication driver to engineer
30:36trying to find a way to balance it.
30:38This was Norris
30:40as we were trying to see him complete the lap
30:42with visor cam.
30:43We get another shot of it.
30:44You have to be so patient
30:45on the turn into that final corner.
30:48And then look how grimy it is
30:50as soon as you get offline.
30:52Grotty off the racing line.
30:55Isaac Hadjar, lock up at turn one.
30:57He's not got a representative time on the boards.
31:00Got to say, this is fascinating.
31:02For a practice session this far in,
31:04the simulating tools that we have in Formula One
31:07so precise, that's the fastest lap
31:08so far in the session with Lewis Hamilton.
31:10Amazing to see them working the wheel this much.
31:12Well, Hamilton improves from what was the best time
31:15to a slightly better time.
31:16Leclerc's just one-tenth away.
31:19Ferrari seemed to be in a decent place.
31:21It's not easy.
31:22We saw Leclerc have a lock up as well,
31:23but everyone else.
31:25It's like they're driving on a damp track,
31:28the way that they're fighting the car.
31:29I mean, Lindblad was skating through 13,
31:32turning to 14 on a hard tire,
31:34and the grip level just wasn't there.
31:36Rear axle, front axle.
31:38Trying to find that perfect line through this turn
31:41with all your inputs on the limit.
31:44It's just so tricky.
31:45It's all on a knife edge.
31:47If you get it right, you're flying.
31:49The Ferraris are there.
31:50Norris was there through 13 of 14 corners,
31:52and then he went miles away on the final turn.
31:56It's a proper challenge for the drivers,
31:58and it's not easy for them to drive at the limit, basically.
32:04Oscar Piastri called in the lack of grip insane
32:07when he was asked whether he wanted another push lap.
32:10Let's go downstairs to the pit lane,
32:12and we can check in with James Hinchcliffe.
32:14Hi, Hinch.
32:16Hello, guys.
32:17How's everybody up there?
32:18I can tell you it's warm and windy down here in pit lane,
32:21but we'll get back to that in a second.
32:23Obviously, we're out here outside the garage of Landstroll.
32:26You guys mentioned the car not going to be ready for this session,
32:29so we came down to see how much work was happening on the right rear.
32:31Well, it's not.
32:33The right rear's gone.
32:34So is the left rear.
32:35The whole back of the car,
32:36a tremendous amount of work happening on the front end as well.
32:39So this is not just a simple repair job on this Aston Martin,
32:44which when you think back to that interview with Adrian Newey,
32:47he mentioned how they had so few spares.
32:49It makes you wonder if they are down on that new rear suspension component
32:54that they need for this car.
32:56Are they having to revert back to some older spec stuff?
32:59I'm not sure, but this certainly is a much bigger job
33:02than what you would have expected for based on the amount of damage
33:05that we saw on that Aston Martin.
33:07So as you mentioned, big hit for this team with all these upgrades on the car.
33:11You want those laps.
33:12You want that data.
33:13They're limited to just one car running at the moment.
33:16Now, I wanted to touch on what you guys mentioned about the wind
33:18because I can tell you it is very windy down here in pit lane,
33:23and you can see the flags above the grandstands here into turn one.
33:26It's showing a pretty healthy headwind into turn one.
33:29That is going to help the drivers on the brakes
33:31even as they try to deal with that bump down there.
33:34But a change in wind direction here at Hungary
33:37can make a massive difference to these race cars.
33:40It's what we saw last year in Q3,
33:42a switch of the direction of the wind,
33:43and it was a half-second difference for some drivers.
33:46Slower for most, about the same for Charles Leclerc,
33:49which is why he ended up on pole.
33:50So, definitely, let's keep an eye on this wind
33:53if it shifts throughout this session.
33:55It's definitely going to change
33:56how these drivers were handling this racetrack.
33:58That's absolutely fascinating stuff
34:00from Hinch down in the pit lane there.
34:02Just to pick up on what he was saying
34:03about the Aston Martin rear suspension,
34:05I've actually had a bit of an update on that.
34:06It was this part that failed on Lance Stroll's car
34:10wasn't actually a new component.
34:13The shrouding around the structural bit was all new,
34:16but the structural bit, the bit that actually broke and mattered,
34:19was actually the same as the old car.
34:21So, they're not quite sure why that bit failed,
34:23and they're still looking into it,
34:24but it's not to do with the upgrade.
34:26So, that's why they were so happy to send out Fernando Alonso
34:29on a part that is exactly the same.
34:33Checking in with Alex Albon.
34:34Alex Albon making his way through turn five.
34:38Chicane ahead.
34:44Clout.
34:45That first, there we go, the sausage curb there.
34:48The, just, well, it's just a raised lip of a curb.
34:52You see a better angle of it there
34:53that he avoids in the second time
34:55with three out of the four wheels.
34:57The fourth one sends the car flinging into the air.
35:01You want to, you want to take the red and white stuff
35:03as soon as you get over the higher mark.
35:05It just bounces the car up,
35:07and you've got a bit of lateral load on,
35:08you've got cornering with a bit of entry speed,
35:10and you're going to be into an unpredictable bounce.
35:14And that's what Albon there,
35:15he's just flung a bit too quick between the apexes
35:18and bailed out, finding the limits, going over the limits.
35:22Oscar Piastri has not enjoyed
35:25his time behind the wheel
35:26in the opening minutes of this session,
35:29but that's a time good enough for fifth.
35:32Piastri understanding what he's got underneath him.
35:34I don't know how representative anything is right now.
35:37You've got the Ferraris like it's a,
35:39like it's a normal day,
35:41as we watch Leclerc have a lockup again.
35:44He's done a couple of decent laps,
35:46so I don't know if that's the same replay as earlier,
35:49or if he's now just had two lockups
35:50at the first turn.
35:52But Leclerc has done his best lap,
35:53he's then almost matched it.
35:55Hamilton's done two laps,
35:56also well clear of the field.
35:59You've got everyone else complaining a lot
36:02about balance, grip level,
36:05the car being undriveable,
36:07and that's what it looks like.
36:08But how much of it is just the conditions,
36:10is it just the wind that's making it difficult?
36:12And as the track rubbers in again,
36:14everyone's going to converge down towards a Ferrari pace.
36:17If it's like this,
36:18you'd say Ferrari are well up on the field.
36:20I just don't believe it is.
36:22The track's going to grip up
36:23as we go through the weekend,
36:25but they are really struggling,
36:26even for a Friday,
36:27even though this place is always dusty on a Friday.
36:29That happens all the time.
36:30We've got support races here as well
36:32with Formula 2 and Formula 3.
36:34But even so,
36:36Chrysacan has been eventful.
36:38Caprile Portoleto looking for three-point scores in a row.
36:41He was very strong earlier on with P6.
36:43I don't remember the circuit ever being this dusty, though.
36:46I mean, off-line,
36:47it's like something in the desert
36:50through some of these corners.
36:52You go wide
36:52because the grip level anyway on the line isn't huge.
36:56You find yourself just kicking up
36:59all the time.
37:00I mean, you were calling it dirt-tracking
37:02in the first session,
37:03and as you come through this final corner,
37:04that brown dust that was being kicked up.
37:06I've never seen anything like it,
37:08not just a Hungarian ring,
37:10but even some of the street circuits,
37:11you don't see that much dust
37:12coming off the cars in pre-practice one.
37:14That's Dakar Rally stuff, isn't it?
37:17Sainz Senior would be licking his lips
37:19at a chance to drive some of it.
37:21It's gone, Wilbur Charles Leclerc.
37:23He's got an improvement
37:24in the first sector.
37:27Continuing to run laps on this medium tyre.
37:32Healthy chunk of curve on the exit.
37:34Right, but look.
37:35As I was about to say,
37:36the Ferrari's a consistent.
37:37I was about to go for it,
37:39and he makes a mistake down at 12.
37:41So a lock-up at the right front,
37:42carrying too much speed,
37:43and the lap's gone.
37:44But by and large,
37:45they are able to extract a sensible pace
37:47with the car looking good.
37:48Leclerc's obviously struggling with brakes,
37:50because that's now the third time
37:51he's had a front lock-up.
37:54Let's have another look at this.
37:56So he's carrying decent speed into 12.
37:58Bit of push.
38:00And, yeah, pretty meaty lock-up.
38:01Absolutely nowhere near making the corner.
38:03So the wind is slightly...
38:07I was going to say whistling in behind him.
38:09It's a bit of a crosswind, really,
38:10down there at 12.
38:12That's the Antonelli.
38:13We haven't seen much of him yet.
38:16Bounce his wife.
38:18Better lap for Kimi,
38:20finding his feet.
38:22Fourth flying lap, this is for him.
38:2814 minutes to go in the session.
38:30Antonelli getting his weekend up and running,
38:32having sat out of the first hour of practice,
38:34again catches it in the 14th and final corner.
38:37and then he's going to get through.
38:39Everyone's in the same boat there.
38:41It's...
38:42You can do 13 corners.
38:44The last one seems to be so hit and miss.
38:46It's 50-50 whether you're going to get through it
38:48without just dumping a heap of time.
38:50And Antonelli there lost out half a second or so,
38:52right at the end of the lap.
38:55So he's learning with every corner that he drives.
38:58His time is good enough to go into fifth.
38:59He's behind teammate George Russell.
39:02This is Alex Elbin.
39:03Had a couple of lockups earlier on at the first turn.
39:06And he continues on the hard tyre.
39:09Three seconds away from the benchmark pace.
39:12You can see he's in 17th for the moment.
39:14Bottas has been in discussion with his race engineer
39:18about where to push and where to accept
39:21that the grip is low.
39:22Improving sector one and sector two.
39:25Ten-time Grand Prix winner.
39:28Got some history around this final corner
39:31with Lewis Hamilton playing in backer position in the past.
39:33And he improves across the board.
39:36But he's P-20.
39:38This reminded me of the first time I drove here.
39:40It was in 2011 in GP2.
39:42And the last corner only had been resurfaced.
39:47And it was like driving, like you can see there,
39:49Bottas turning in with just a heap of understain.
39:52It looked absolutely fine.
39:54You got onto this patch of tarmac
39:55and it was like it was wet suddenly.
39:58Trying to find your way through the line.
40:00It was impossible.
40:01So you had to just way underdrive it
40:04because if you went in
40:05on what your head thought would be the limit,
40:07you're just spewing off in oversteer or understeer.
40:10And that's what it seems to be right now again.
40:12In that last corner,
40:13it's such a tricky one to navigate.
40:17The only way through is to basically underdrive
40:19and be clean, it seems.
40:22Okay, 39 minutes to go in the session.
40:26It is time to head to the pit lane
40:27and specifically the pit wall
40:30where Ruth Buscombe is there for us
40:33back in a natural habitat.
40:35Over to you, Ruth.
40:38I am back on a pit wall.
40:40I'm back here right at the right end
40:42looking, I can see that bump in turn one.
40:45So if I was a strategist right now on a pit wall,
40:48which I guess I actually am,
40:49the things I'm looking at right now
40:51is how the track is evolving.
40:52So I'm using all the tools I have on my pit wall here
40:54to be able to establish that.
40:57Now I can tell you the track is evolving slowly
40:59because it's gusting.
41:00Looking at the direction,
41:01the wind is unsettling those cars.
41:04We've got gusts out there of up to 25 KPH
41:07combined with the fact
41:08that what the teams are on now
41:10are qualifying sims.
41:11That was a natural reaction
41:13to what happens when a car drives past.
41:14You always want to go and look at it
41:16as we see that McLaren pile out
41:18on that red soft tyre.
41:19This tyre will always get hot
41:21by the end of the lap.
41:22So they're always holding on
41:24in laps 13 and 14.
41:26Ferrari aren't doing that lift-off trick
41:28that we saw in there this morning.
41:30We can see in the medium-speed corners
41:32it is tricky out there
41:34and gusts of wind are making it more and more.
41:36We can see up on the screen now
41:37Hamilton versus Russell.
41:390.44 is the advantage that we're seeing
41:42right now from that Ferrari
41:43that looks at the moment like the car to be.
41:46I'm having a great fun here.
41:47I'm waiting for the high fuel runs to start.
41:49I've got a great view of all the upgrades.
41:52This is brilliant.
41:53I'm having a great time.
41:56Great to see you back on a pit wall, Ruth Buscombe.
41:58Bringing us all the analysis
42:00across the course of the entire Grand Prix weekend
42:03using the tools
42:04that the strategists themselves
42:06will be using in real time
42:08to cool the shots
42:10for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
42:12I'd love to see it.
42:13Ruth in her element
42:15back on the pit wall.
42:17You know what's coming next?
42:18What we need to do next?
42:21Go on.
42:22Is it me back in a car?
42:23No, we tried that at the start of the year.
42:26We tried that at the start of the year.
42:27Track guide.
42:28Wait, Jolien Palmer is offering
42:29to drive a racing car
42:30because this has been a while.
42:32At the start of the year in Australia
42:33we tried it for the track guide, didn't we?
42:35Yeah.
42:36Four laps.
42:37Box pops.
42:39Here's your microphone.
42:40Go and stand on the side of the track now.
42:41That's better.
42:44Glad you're with us
42:45in the commentary box, Joe.
42:47Hey, is it all right?
42:48We've got a lot on for Wilando Norris now.
42:50Why don't you talk us around?
42:51Let's do it.
42:51Norris, exit at Turn 1.
42:53Soft tyres, though.
42:55This is excitement, guys.
42:58Attacking the entry to Turn 2.
43:00Turning in pretty early.
43:01Washing wide on the exit.
43:04Short shift and a hesitation
43:05on throttle through Turn 3.
43:07But that is the fastest first sector.
43:09So gets up to the apex kerb
43:11at Turn 4.
43:13Long right-hander at 5.
43:16Let's see how much kerb he can
43:17nobble through this chicane.
43:20Yeah, quite a lot of it
43:21on the left-hand side there.
43:23Norris has had plenty of pace so far
43:25this weekend, this day.
43:27But hasn't been able to put
43:28all the corners together.
43:29You can see the McLaren now
43:30starts to fight with rear grip.
43:32This is where he flung off the road
43:33earlier on.
43:34But he is way better through there.
43:36So we're half a second up on Hamilton.
43:38This is looking like it could be
43:39the best lap of the day
43:40as the grip level comes up
43:41and Lando starts piecing it
43:42together on a soft.
43:44These are the tricky
43:45last couple of turns.
43:48Let's see how he can
43:50thread his way through.
43:54Wait for it.
43:55Yeah, neat and tidy for Norris.
43:57Out of the final turn.
43:58Comes through.
43:58The reward.
43:59Top spot.
44:01Yeah, judging it really nicely
44:02through that final corner.
44:05And a strong lap.
44:06Best lap of the day
44:07still in 19-0.
44:0819-2 for Norris.
44:10Soft tyre runs
44:11coming in thick and fast
44:13at the moment.
44:13Next up, Max Verstappen.
44:15Didn't manage to nail
44:16the final sector there.
44:17Looked like he should have had
44:18the march on Leclerc's
44:19fastest of the day.
44:20But remember,
44:20as Max gets all fish-taily
44:22out of the final turn,
44:25it's second place
44:26for Verstappen.
44:27But they're both
44:28a couple of tenths
44:29drift of Hamilton's
44:30final sector so far.
44:32So Lewis on the medium,
44:33still the class
44:35as Lawson also
44:37starts snapping.
44:38But Norris, I think,
44:38was particularly cautious there
44:39because that's where
44:40he was really wide
44:41earlier on.
44:42And he's not put
44:42many laps on the board.
44:44So when he's on the softs
44:45and he's put 13 corners
44:47together pretty well,
44:48I think he was maybe
44:48slightly passive
44:49as we see everyone else
44:50just on the limb
44:51and a grip a little more.
44:54Tiptoeing around
44:54that final corner.
44:56Lindblad now
44:56across the line
44:57to go P7.
44:58Honestly, I would hate this
45:00because you start,
45:00you drive the rest
45:01of the lap thinking,
45:02OK, the grip level's
45:03coming up,
45:04you're on the softs now,
45:05on the line,
45:06it's cleaning up nicely,
45:07you start to lean
45:08on the tyre,
45:09getting a great read
45:10for the balance.
45:10And then you get
45:11to the last turn,
45:12you have to completely
45:12shift your mentality
45:14to being like it's wet,
45:17basically.
45:17To just take that
45:19grip level down,
45:20everything you've learned
45:20through the last
45:21one minute and ten seconds,
45:23park that because this
45:25is its own challenge
45:26right at the end
45:26of the lap.
45:27So the active aero
45:28shuts for Russell
45:28as he now approaches
45:29Jeopardy corner.
45:32The long left-hander,
45:33this is at least stable.
45:36It's consistent.
45:37You start to lose
45:38the rear through the exit,
45:39but this is the corner
45:40here where everyone
45:41is fighting it.
45:42How much do you have
45:44to withdraw into yourself?
45:45And Russell there
45:46looked way neater
45:47than most through
45:47that final turn,
45:48and he jumps up the order
45:49to fourth place,
45:50but still,
45:52I mean,
45:52that's not Russell's
45:53best final sector yet,
45:55and he's miles away
45:56from Hamilton,
45:56so I think they're
45:58starting to get
45:59clean-ups on the board,
46:00but by being really
46:01cautious now on the limit.
46:04Max Verstappen saying
46:05his seating position
46:06has an issue.
46:07Just for a form guy,
46:09George Russell,
46:10around here in recent years,
46:11pole in 22,
46:13then 18th, 17th,
46:14fourth last year.
46:16He's fourth at the moment.
46:17Here's Antonelli.
46:17Now, let's have a look
46:19at this for a benchmark.
46:22Antonelli pushing on.
46:24We're heading
46:24to James Hinchcliffe.
46:27Yeah, thanks, guys.
46:28Down here at Audi now,
46:29we just saw Nico Hülkenberg
46:31come in after his
46:31soft-tire run,
46:32and he's away again,
46:34doing very well right now,
46:35sitting in P7,
46:36which is where he was,
46:37maybe P8,
46:38before these
46:39soft-tire runs happened,
46:40so genuine pace
46:42from the Audi.
46:43We saw both in the top
46:4410 in FP1.
46:45That guy's still looking
46:46for his first points
46:47of the year,
46:48despite scoring 51
46:49of them last year.
46:50Audi pace looks
46:51really genuine today, guys.
46:53Thank you, James.
46:54Red flag is out.
46:56Franco Colopinto
46:57in the barriers.
46:58We will not get to see
47:00the end of the lap
47:01for Kimi Antonelli.
47:04Driver from Argentina
47:05reporting that he's okay,
47:08and finding his way
47:09to the wall.
47:12given how tricky it has been,
47:14I'm amazed he's the first
47:16one to do it,
47:17but he has given his mechanics
47:19a bit of work to do
47:21and found the barriers.
47:23All the best drivers
47:25find that barrier
47:26in a FP2 session,
47:29especially if you're driving
47:29one of the Enstone-based teams.
47:31there's two...
47:32to the right
