00:00Coach, I want to tell people the story again about when you got fired from Tampa.
00:06I was doing my morning show in Tampa.
00:08By the end of my show, Coach Dungy had a job with the Colts,
00:13and I was doing a four-hour show.
00:15And, Coach, I've never seen anything like it.
00:18It was huge news in Tampa Bay, obviously, that Coach had been let go.
00:23And all of a sudden, I'm getting text messages from Indianapolis guys,
00:28and they're texting me going, Sills, Coach Dungy's getting this job.
00:32I'm like, what?
00:33By the end of my program, you had that job.
00:37I mean, Coach, did it really happen that fast?
00:40It did, and it was God's plan all the way, Dan.
00:44I got let go.
00:45We lost the playoff game to Philadelphia.
00:47The owners were kind of going back and forth,
00:50the Glazer family deciding what they wanted to do.
00:53They called me in in the morning and said,
00:56hey, we decided we're going in another direction.
00:58We're going to announce it.
01:00And I said, well, would you mind if I go to the press conference?
01:03And they were a little startled,
01:05and I don't think they knew what I was going to say,
01:07but they allowed me to do it.
01:08I thanked them for hiring me, giving me a chance.
01:12I said I didn't agree with the decision.
01:14I thought we were close to the Super Bowl, but I understood it,
01:17and God would provide the next steps.
01:19I don't know what that's going to be,
01:20but thank you for believing me and getting me started.
01:23Well, I got home after the press conference,
01:26and there was a message on my old answering machine.
01:29It was Jim Irsay from the Colts, and he said,
01:32hey, we've made a change here, and you're the guy I want.
01:35Call me back, please.
01:37So I called him, and he said, this is not a job interview.
01:42Do not have an agent call me.
01:44You're the guy I want.
01:46The chemistry and the teamwork and the camaraderie
01:49and the off-the-field stuff that you put together in Tampa,
01:52that's just what I'm looking for.
01:54How much money do you want?
01:55You think about it.
01:56Tell me how much money you want, and you've got the job.
01:59And that was basically it.
02:01And I can't even explain how it happened other than that.
02:04I just think God provided it.
02:07No doubt.
02:07And then he reconnected you with Tom Moore,
02:09who was the OC there for Peyton Manning.
02:14I mean, it just went full circle for you,
02:17and it was something like you say.
02:19I'm a man of God myself.
02:21Things work out like that, Coach.
02:23I mean, you must have just thought that was meant to be.
02:26I had tried to hire Tom Moore was my quarterback coach in college
02:31in 1973 to 76.
02:33Then he went to the Steelers.
02:35But we ran a no-huddle offense.
02:37Everything was in the quarterback's hand.
02:39He made me the quarterback that I was.
02:42I learned so much from him.
02:43So I tried to hire him when I got to the Bucs.
02:46But he was coaching with the Lions.
02:49And Wayne Fon said, there's no way I can let this man go.
02:52So I figured, okay, it's just not going to work out.
02:55He ends up leaving there, going to Indianapolis,
02:58Peyton's rookie year, coaching him,
03:00putting the same no-huddle offense in.
03:02Jim Merce calls and gives me the job.
03:04And Tom Moore and Peyton Manning are sitting there waiting for me.
03:08You couldn't ask for anything better.
