00:01What if one of the most widely accepted beliefs within Christianity is not actually taught
00:07in the Bible?
00:08If you've ever been taught that Sunday is the Sabbath, you really need to examine the
00:13passages that are put forth that try to support this idea.
00:18Well, in this episode, we're actually going to look at three more proof texts that are
00:23put forth from Scripture to support the idea that Sunday is the Sabbath.
00:27Do they hold up?
00:28Do they not hold up?
00:30Well, that's what we're going to get into in this episode.
00:32So join us as we examine the arguments that are commonly put forth for Sunday as the Sabbath.
00:56So this teaching is going to be all about Shabbat.
01:00And three of the common arguments that are put forth to prop up the idea that Sunday is
01:05the Sabbath.
01:06Last episode, we looked at three of the top arguments that I thought was the most common
01:12or at least the most impactful, I guess you could say.
01:15Now we're going to finish up with the Sunday arguments in our second episode of Sunday
01:20arguments in our Shabbat series.
01:24And we're going to examine three more that are commonly put forth.
01:28Now, if you would like the notes for this particular episode, even more notes than we're going to present to
01:33you here,
01:34more information, more resources, stuff like that.
01:36Make sure to go to our website at www.godhonesttruth.com.

01:43And there you'll be able to find the on-demand video.
01:46You'll be able to find the draw slides that you see here on your screen.
01:49But you'll be able to go through them at your own pace, even out of sync with the video if
01:54you'd like.
01:54Go back and forth, whatever it is.
01:56Very, very beneficial for those of you who are out there like nerds or like me.
02:00But you'll also be able to find the AI research papers that we had put together or produced,
02:06as well as our own personal notes on the subject of the Sabbath and the transcript,
02:11if that is so benefit to you.
02:14It's all right there on that article post on our website at www.godhonesttruth.com.
02:17And of course, like always, the best way to get to that particular article post

02:27And that link should be down there, whether you're watching on an audio podcasting platform
02:31or a video podcasting platform.
02:34That link should be down there in the description, all the same.
02:37If it's not, let us know in our email at team at godhonesttruth.com.
02:41And we can get that link out to you or try to help resolve whatever issues there may be.
02:46Now, just a quick recap or overview of the series so far.
02:51Number one, in our first episode, we went over the, yeah, in the first episode,
02:56we went over how the Shabbat is presented and put forth and created and commanded in the Tannach.
03:03We looked at Shabbat and the Tannach in the first episode.
03:06Naturally, in the second episode, we went forward and looked at the Shabbat in the Brit Hadashah,
03:12or what some people call the New Testament.
03:16Third episode, we looked at Shabbat in the early centuries.
03:19And that was a very, very educational and informational episode,
03:24which really shows the turning point there of where the quote-unquote church
03:30went from the actual Sabbath of Scripture to the Roman pagan Sabbath of the first day of the week.
03:39So very good information there and explains how we got so off course.
03:43And then in episode four, we looked at Shabbat and the Reformation and also a few miscellaneous things
03:49and some really good information there, especially a guy that you've probably never heard of,
03:53but is a powerhouse in the Reformation.
03:56So if you missed it, definitely go back and watch that episode as well.
04:00Last episode, in episode five, we looked at the three top common arguments,
04:05or at least in my opinion, the most impactful arguments for putting forth Sunday as the Sabbath.
04:12And we debunked those.
04:13We looked at the context.
04:14We looked at definitions.
04:15We looked at common sense and a whole bunch of stuff.
04:19We exegeted various passages and we found those three arguments did not hold water
04:25when it comes to trying to say that Sunday is the Sabbath.
04:28Now, in this episode, in episode six, we're looking at three more arguments for Sunday as the Sabbath as well.
04:36In our next episode, we're going to be taking a look at what's called the Lunar Sabbath.
04:41Now, if you haven't learned or know anything about the Lunar Sabbath, that's fine.
04:45We will explain to you what it is and actually go over the biblical and historical evidence that goes along
04:52with that as well.
04:53However, like I said earlier, this is going to be in a couple of weeks because we've got some things
04:59planned and time off.
05:00So we're going to get to it, but just hang out with us.
05:03And we're actually thinking about doing an eighth episode, sort of like a series wrap up to get everything all
05:09in a nutshell,
05:09as it were, a complete recap of the entire series.
05:12We haven't decided yet, but we'll see how that works out.
05:16Now, like we did last time, let's go over a few basics real quick.
05:20We'll go over them even quicker this time since we went over them last time a little bit more in
05:25depth.
05:25So this is going to be just a quick review, a quick overview of the basics that you need to
05:30keep in mind when examining these passages that we're going to examine.
05:34But in general, also, every time you do a Bible study, these are some good principles to keep in mind
05:40and to apply when you're doing your Bible study.
05:44First off, let's look at some hermeneutics, what people will call hermeneutics.
05:48And this is going to be very important for studying scripture.
05:52First off, we have the literal principle, which states that the literal words in their plain meaning is actually what
05:58they mean.
05:59It's what we actually start with before we actually look at metaphorical or symbolic or poetic or things like that.
06:06Then we get into the contextual principle, which is taking things into context.
06:11And last episode, we saw that once we did take things into context, that it really illuminated and disproved the
06:18whole Sunday Sabbath argument.
06:20And you got the principle of scriptural harmony, whereas the in a nutshell, basically, the Bible does not contradict itself.
06:27Between the Tanakh and the Brut HaShah, there is no conflict.
06:31It's all in unity.
06:33Then we've got the grammatical principle, which is looking at the grammar of the original languages that the scriptures were
06:40written in, Hebrew for the Tanakh, and Greek for the Brut HaShah.
06:44And we've got the historical cultural principle, which is looking at various passages or doing your Bible study in reference
06:51and taking into account the culture and the history that was going on at the time of whatever it is
06:57that you're studying.
06:58And we've got the genre principle, which is you take each book or each passage in the context or in
07:07whatever genre it is, whether it's a narrative or a historical or apocalyptic or poetic or things like that.
07:15And we've got the progressive revelation principle.
07:18And don't take this too far.
07:19This doesn't mean like, you know, the Book of Mormon is a progressive revelation of no, no, nothing like that.
07:26No, this basically says that whatever is in scripture, sometimes it's not fully spelled out in the beginning, but over
07:33time, bits and pieces of it are revealed and shown to us.
07:37And but again, none of that contradicts itself with previous revelations.
07:43Then we've got the authorial intent principle, and this is what the author intended for his audience to know and
07:50understand and how the audience would have taken it at the time that was written by the author to the
07:56to the audience.
07:58And we've got the concept of Sola Scriptura, and this is a definitely a Protestant thing.
08:03And this is the principle that the scriptures alone are the ultimate infallible authority for faith and practice serving as
08:09the final court of appeal for all doctrine.
08:11And Sola Scriptura says if it's not in the Bible or if the Bible doesn't state it, then either it's
08:17tradition or we need to get rid of it.
08:19So if it doesn't come from scripture, it's definitely not the ultimate final authority as far as doctrine goes.
08:25And we've got the whole concept of descriptive versus prescriptive.
08:29When it comes to descriptive, that's a passage that records or details what happened historically, basically just telling the tale
08:35without necessarily commanding or approving of the behavior for anyone.
08:40Then you've got the concept of prescriptive, and this is a passage that explicitly commands or establishes an ongoing rule
08:47for how readers should live, think or act.
08:51So prescriptive is something that tells you what to do.
08:54Think of the Ten Commandments, thou shalt, thou shalt not, things like that.
08:58Those are prescriptive, whereas saying, you know, so-and-so went to this city on this day and they walked
09:05down the road.
09:06That was descriptive.
09:08Then you've got the concept of eisegesis versus exegesis.
09:12And exegesis is the process of drawing out of the original true meaning, I'm sorry, drawing out the original true
09:18meaning from a text based on what the author actually intended to communicate.
09:22On the flip side of that is eisegesis, and that means the practice of reading one's own biases, modern assumptions,
09:28or preconceived ideas into a text, forcing it to say what the reader wants.
09:33Obviously, we want to do exegesis when it comes to scripture, have the scriptures change us, instead of performing eisegesis,
09:40which is taking our own personal desires and trying to read it back into scripture and twist the text to
09:46make it read what we want it to say.
09:48No, scripture needs to change us. We don't need to try to change scripture.
09:52Then we've got the concept of anachronism, and this is the process or the act of taking something that is
09:59out of time historically and placing it back earlier.
10:03Like, for instance, if we talk about Abraham Lincoln's Facebook account, that would be anachronistic, because obviously the internet wasn't
10:10around then, much less Facebook.
10:12So that's anachronism. We've got confirmation bias. This is the mental tendency to search for, favor, and recall information that
10:19supports your existing beliefs while completely ignoring or downplaying evidence that contradicts them.
10:24Now, this is something to keep in mind, because we all have bias. We all have confirmation bias.
10:29We need to be aware of that when we're studying and not just take things like we think they are
10:34coming at us, because it may be something we've already thought or already believe, and we need to take it
10:40for what it actually says, not for what we already believe.
10:44Then there's the concept of taking things in context, and this is examining a specific statement within its surrounding verses,
10:51within its historical setting, and also within its literary genre to ensure its meaning aligns with the author's complete message.
10:59And we saw that last time with the three arguments that we looked at for Sunday as the Sabbath, and
11:04we saw that a lot of times when you just take things into context, it completely destroys the argument that
11:10Sunday is the Sabbath, at least when we looked at those three passages.
11:14We'll see what it means here in just a minute, too, when we'll examine three more passages.
11:18Now, let's look at some various attributes that are ascribed to the Sabbath back in the Tanakh.
11:25Number one is described as the day of rest, and this is the most important and most significant attribute of
11:32the Sabbath as it was initially created, as it was commanded, as it was performed back in the Tanakh.
11:40It was a day of rest.
11:41No other day was described as a day of rest.
11:44The Sabbath, if nothing else, it was the day of rest.
11:49So keep that in mind, when people were putting forth another day of the week as the new day of
11:53rest, do any of the passages they put forth describe it, that new day, as being a day of rest?
11:59Because if not, there's absolutely no way they can claim that is the Sabbath, because the Sabbath was initiated and
12:06put forth initially and commanded initially as a day of rest.
12:11The Sabbath is also described as a sign between Yahweh and his people.
12:15Again, new arguments that are put forth.
12:17It doesn't say that it's a sign between Yahweh and his people.
12:21The Sabbath and its knock is also described as being directly in connection with the creation, and we see that
12:28within the Ten Commandments of Exodus, and then it's attributed or connected to the Exodus from Egypt in the book
12:35of Deuteronomy.
12:36It's also being directly described as being made holy by Yahweh, and the very first thing to be made holy
12:43or set apart is directly described as being blessed by Yahweh.
12:48We see that in the creation account as well.
12:51There's also various gathering times that people gather together back in the Tanakh, and it wasn't just on the Sabbath.
13:00There were many days that Israel came together and worshiped, and I say this all the time, but I love
13:06asking people what the day of worship is during the week.
13:09And a lot of people, if they're Sunday Sabbath people, they say, well, Sunday.
13:13Or if they are Messianic, they'll say, okay, well, it's Saturday.
13:16That's the day of worship.
13:18No, every day should be a day of worship.
13:21We should worship Yahweh every single day.
13:24But the Sabbath is the day of rest.
13:28Get the distinction?
13:29But Israel came together and gathered together on many different days.
13:33They worshiped together on many different days.
13:35So just because people get together doesn't mean that is the Sabbath or even the new Sabbath.
13:41And they got together on many days back in the Tanakh for multiple reasons.
13:44The temple itself, as we looked at back in the first episode, the temple functions on a daily basis, seven
13:53days a week.
13:54Sacrifices were offered and occurred morning and evening, seven days a week.
14:01Prayer occurred throughout the day as well, and sometimes they prayed together.
14:06Likewise, Christians may gather on any day.
14:08You can see that even in today's day and age.
14:10They gather together on Wednesday nights.
14:13Just because they're gathered together on Wednesday night doesn't mean that they consider that Wednesday to be the Sabbath.
14:18Acts records gatherings on various occasions.
14:21You can see in Scripture on the book of Acts that they gathered together and broke bread together daily.
14:28Not just one day of the week, but daily.
14:31Gathering on Sunday is not identical to declaring Sunday the Sabbath.
14:35The distinction is crucial and very important.
14:39And one common misunderstanding is assuming that any religious gathering occurring on a particular day automatically establishes that day as
14:47a holy day.
14:48Just because people get together doesn't mean it's the Sabbath, and it doesn't mean it is a holy day either.
14:53However, Hebrew life included gatherings throughout the week.
14:57We had synagogue gatherings.
14:59We had prayer times.
15:00We had festival assemblies.
15:01Remember, they got together on Passover and Shavuot and Yom Teruah and Sukkot, etc., etc.
15:07They got together for temple services.
15:09They got together for study gatherings.
15:11They got together for community meetings.
15:13So there's all kinds of things, all kinds of reasons that people would get together, even back in the Brit
15:18Hattish shop.
15:19The existence of a gathering does not automatically define the day as a Sabbath.
15:25So now let's go ahead and start with Colossians 2, verses 16-17.
15:29And this is going to be the first of the three arguments that we look at during this particular episode.
15:35The passage goes as such.
15:38Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking or in respect of a festival or a new
15:43moon or Sabbath, which are a shadow of what is to come, but the body of the Messiah.
15:49Right there, it says it in black and white.
15:51Let no one therefore judge you in respect of the Sabbath.
15:57Because all of that was just, they used to be shadows and the shadow who was cast in the shadow
16:02Messiah has come.
16:04So therefore, those shadows are done and gone away with.
16:07Right there in black and white.
16:10No, no, no, no, no.
16:11Let's not just take this out of context.
16:13Let's take everything into context.
16:16Number one, here is something that is going to be, or at least it sticks out to me like a,
16:23it's like someone punching me in the face.
16:25But it says here, look very closely at the language that Paul uses here to the Colossians.
16:33Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking or in respect of a festival or a new
16:38moon or Sabbath, which are a shadow of what is to come, but the body of Messiah.
16:46Are.
16:47For those of you who haven't, it hasn't clicked yet, or you don't actually know this.
16:53Are, in English, is a conjugation of the verb to be.
16:58It's a present tense of the verb to be.
17:00It's a present conjugation of the verb to be.
17:02That means that when Paul wrote that, he says that those things, the festivals, the new moons, the Sabbath, were
17:08still ongoing.
17:09He says they are.
17:11He didn't say they were.
17:12He says they are, indicating that they are still relevant.
17:16They are still ongoing.
17:18They have not been done away with.
17:20Remember, this is many, many years after the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Yeshua.
17:26And Paul is still saying that these things are still in effect.
17:32They are ongoing and they are still relevant.
17:35For those of you who would like even more evidence, more proof, here is the breakdown of that from blueletterbible
17:42.org.
17:43And verify with other sources as well.
17:46But that word right there in the Greek is still in the present tense, just like it is in English.
17:52And we showed you the various translations.
17:54They all do it in that exact tense, the present tense that Paul was writing in.
17:58So, Paul still thought these things were ongoing and hadn't been done away with.
18:04That included the weekly Sabbath as well as the other Sabbaths that are mentioned in Scripture.
18:11But what about that other part where it says, let no one therefore judge you?
18:16Well, take this into account.
18:17It starts at the beginning, let no one therefore judge you.
18:21It's giving you the command and telling you what not to do.
18:24Don't let anyone outside, in this context especially, not let anyone who is not a believer outside the faith judge
18:32you.
18:32And it says, which are the shadow of things to come.
18:35But who is to judge you?
18:38Paul says here, let the body of Messiah.
18:41Take out that little, you know, tangent part that he wrote there.
18:45Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of any festival or a new
18:49moon or Sabbaths, but the body of the Messiah.
18:52So, don't let the unbelievers try and judge you.
18:54Don't let those who are outside of the faith judge you.
18:56But those who are in the faith, those who have been educated, those who are your brothers and sisters who
19:02love you and want to see you advance and, you know, better yourself,
19:08those are the ones who are to judge you, not the people outside who just want to tear you down
19:12a lot of times or try and destroy your faith.
19:14Don't let them judge you.
19:15Let those who are in the faith, those are the ones who are to judge you.
19:20Also, notice some things right here.
19:22This is some parts where I disagree with some of these translations.
19:26It says, but the body of Messiah.
19:28Now, when it says here in the King James, I know it doesn't put it correctly here on screen because
19:35of all my formatting.
19:36But if you look at the King James Version, it says at the very end, but the body is of
19:41Christ.
19:41And that term right there is italicized in the King James Version.
19:48And that indicates that it's not actually in the original Greek.
19:52It's actually inserted by the translators just to help the flow of the way the English goes in comparison to
19:58the way the Greek goes, which is nice.
20:00That's a great feature of the King James.
20:04But, take it out.
20:06And it's not that the body is of Christ.
20:08It's referring to the body of Christ.
20:12There's a distinction there.
20:13I don't know if you caught that or not.
20:14It's talking about the assembly, the believers, the church, whatever term you want to use.
20:19But I also noticed some of these other ones, like the ESV, the LSB, and TLV, and also the Wycliffe
20:25as well.
20:27Well, actually, the Wycliffe is just like the King James, so it's not that much out.
20:31But the other ones, the ESV, the LSB, and the TLV, it says the reality is Messiah in the Tree
20:38of Life Version.
20:38That's not true.
20:40It's talking about the body, the assembly.
20:42And I'll show you that coming up here in just a moment.
20:44The LSB says the substance belongs to Christ.
20:47What substance?
20:49We're not talking about a substance here.
20:50We're talking about a congregation.
20:51We're talking about people.
20:53And it's talking about the body or the assembly of Messiah.
20:57And the same thing with the ESV there.
21:00It says substance.
21:00But when you break it down and look at the actual Greek, the word there is for body or, metaphorically
21:07speaking, the body, like the assembly or like the church, etc., etc.
21:11So hopefully that explains a little bit more in detail about this one particular passage.
21:18But again, that's still taken out of context with the surrounding verses.
21:22So let's look at everything in context with some of the surrounding verses of Colossians 2, 16 and 17.
21:28And now we're going to look at the greater passage, which is Colossians 2, 11 through 23.
21:36In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands in the putting off of the body
21:42of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Messiah, having been buried with him in immersion, in which
21:48you also were raised with him through the belief in the working of Elohim, who raised him from the dead.
21:54And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has made alive together with him,
22:00having forgiven you all your trespasses, having blotted out that which was written by hand against us.
22:06By the dogmas which stood against principalities and the authorities, he made a public display of them, having prevailed over
22:13them in it.
22:14Let no one, therefore, judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a festival or a new
22:19moon or Sabbath, which are a shadow of what is to come, but the body of the Messiah.
22:24Let no one deprive you of the prize, one who takes delight in false humility and worship of messengers or
22:30angels, taking his stand on what he has not seen, puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast
22:36to the head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the growth
22:43of Elohim.
22:44If, then, you died with Messiah from the elementary matters of the world, why, as though living in the world,
22:50do you subject yourselves to dogmas, do not touch, do not taste, do not handle, which are all to perish
22:56with use, according to the commands and teachings of men?
23:00These, indeed, have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed worship, humiliation, and harsh treatment of the body, of no
23:06value at all, only for satisfaction of the flesh.
23:09But here's a greater context, and hopefully this is helping you to understand exactly what's being referred to here in
23:16Colossians 2, 16 and 17.
23:19There's the very beginning before these two verses, we see it's talking about how you came into the faith, how
23:25you were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands,
23:28how you were buried with Messiah and raised with Messiah through immersion, how you were forgiven all your trespasses, blotted
23:36out, which is written against us.
23:38He has taken those dogmas, which is man-made traditions, a.k.a. the pharisaical oral law, etc., etc., which
23:45stood against us and taken out of the way,
23:48and stripped the principalities and authorities of their power, basically, and made a public display of them prevailing over them.
23:55Then, so who is he talking about here?
23:57Well, so far, what he's been talking about is how you came into the faith, how you became saved and
24:02was born again.
24:04And this goes right into the body of Messiah making up the church.
24:09Then it talks about the outsiders and getting rid of them, their authority, their powers, stuff like that, and their
24:15dogmas, which they had come against us with.
24:18So now he's talking about let no one therefore judge you.
24:21Well, who's the no one he's talking about?
24:23What he's just talked about before, and that is those who are outside who have those dogmas against us.
24:28But he goes on to reference them again after this.
24:32He says,
24:33If then you died with Messiah from the elementary matters of the world, why, as though living in the world,
24:39do you subject yourselves to dogmas?
24:41Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle, which are all to perish with use according to the commands
24:46and teachings of men.
24:47Well, obviously, this isn't talking about the Torah, because the Torah is not the commands and teachings of men.
24:54Obviously, right?
24:56So the dogmas, the teachings of men, the commandments of men, and the outsiders, that's what the context is talking
25:03about here within Colossians chapter 2, verses 16 and 17.
25:08It says,
25:08Do not let the outsiders judge you, rather let the body of Messiah judge you.
25:14Again, going back to that iron sharpening iron, getting set straight.
25:18I mean, we've all got things we mess up on from time to time.
25:22I know I do.
25:22I'm not going to list them out here for you.
25:24It'll take for a while, but yeah, it's nice to have someone that you are accountable to, who loves you
25:30and wants to see you get better.
25:31And therefore, their judgment is a righteous judgment, hopefully a righteous judgment, and an educated judgment to help you advance
25:39your faith and your walk in the faith and become closer to Yahweh and Yeshua.
25:45Now, if Paul was talking in Colossians, or writing to the Colossians, saying that the Sabbath had been done away
25:51with, as some people put forth, when they put forth verses 16 and 17, he would actually be contradicting himself
25:58from what he wrote in other places as well.
26:01If Saul argued that the Sabbath was obsolete, he would be contradicting his own public testimonies, where he claimed to
26:09believe everything written in the law and the prophets and asserted he had committed no offense against the Torah.
26:15You can find various examples like that in Acts chapter 21, Acts chapter 24, Acts 25, etc., etc.
26:25We saw last time, and also in other episodes, where Paul himself, they said, oh, there's people coming against you,
26:31they're saying that you are doing away with the word of Moses, and Paul takes a Nazarite vow to show
26:38that he does keep the Torah.
26:41So why would he now in Colossians, or in the book of Colossians, write that the Sabbath was obsolete?
26:47He wouldn't. That would be a contradiction, and that's not what Paul's doing.
26:51Paul is reinforcing the Torah, but he's telling us, do not let others outside the faith judge you in the
26:59way that you keep the faith.
27:00Let those who are in the faith judge you and guide you.
27:04That's what Paul's saying here in Colossians.
27:08Moving on to Romans chapter 14, verse 5.
27:13One indeed judges one day above another, another judges every day alike.
27:18Let each one be completely persuaded in his own mind.
27:22So obviously it's saying here that you can pick whatever day you want to have the Sabbath, right?
27:29No, no, no, no.
27:30But a lot of times that's what's put forth by the Sunday Sabbath people.
27:34And again, as we saw in the last episode when looking at the main three arguments for Sunday Sabbath,
27:43that context would completely obliterate the argument for Sunday Sabbath.
27:48Same thing happens here.
27:50Let's look at Romans chapter 14, verses 1 through 6.
27:55And receive him who is weak in the belief, not criticizing his thoughts.
27:59One indeed believes to eat all food, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.
28:03He that eats, let him not despise him who does not eat.
28:07And he that does not eat, let him not judge him who eats.
28:10For Elohim received him.
28:12Who are you that judges another servant?
28:15To his own master he stands or falls, but he shall be made to stand.
28:19For Elohim is able to make him stand.
28:21One indeed judges one day above another, another judges every day alike.
28:26Let each one be completely persuaded in his own mind.
28:29He who minds the day minds it to Yahweh, and he who does not mind the day, to Yahweh he
28:35does not mind it.
28:36He who eats, eats to Yahweh, for he gives Elohim thanks.
28:40And he who does not eat, to Yahweh he does not eat, and gives Elohim thanks.
28:48So, does this provide a greater context to you?
28:51It's not talking about just a day in general.
28:54It's not talking about holy days and stuff like that.
28:57What is it talking about?
28:58Well, it's actually talking about days in relation to food.
29:02And in this context, I think the information and the evidence strongly points to the fasting days that were tradition
29:11back then.
29:12For instance, the Pharisees, the common understanding back then, or common tradition, was to fast on Mondays and Thursdays.
29:21We see in the Didache, it tells them not to be like the hypocrites who fast on Monday and Thursday,
29:26but you should rather fast on Tuesdays and Fridays.
29:32And that's what the context here, we see in context, it's talking about food before verse 5, and it's talking
29:38about food after verse 5, and then it's talking about, in verse 5, days.
29:43So, you put that together, food and days, what are they actually talking about?
29:47Well, it's not the Sabbath, obviously.
29:48In fact, the word Sabbath isn't there in this particular passage, not in verse 5, not in verses 1-6,
29:57it's not even in chapter 14, nor is the word Sabbath ever used in the entire book of Romans, which
30:06is interesting, isn't it?
30:08So, Romans 14, 5, I would definitely say the information is strongly against 14, 5, referencing the Sabbath, but instead,
30:18the evidence overwhelmingly, in my opinion, points to the fasting days instead.
30:23And we've also did an episode a long time ago about fasting, and we've seen, even in that episode, and
30:32also the episodes that we've done on Yom Kippurim, that fasting is not actually commanded in Scripture.
30:39Nowhere.
30:39It's a good idea, we see lots of people doing it, but it's not actually commanded, not even for Yom
30:44Kippurim.
30:45So, when Paul says, don't judge each other in regards to your fasting, that's because there's no command.
30:50There's nothing to judge people on, it's like, you know, trying to judge someone based on how they tie their
30:56ZZ.
30:58There's no command on how to tie the ZZ, there's not even command on the number of ZZ you're to
31:03have.
31:04It just says, on the borders of your garment, and make sure it has a blue thread.
31:08Other than that, you could have white thread, you could have black thread, which I saw with some law enforcement
31:13that I've personally known,
31:16or you could have pink and stuff like that with it as well, as long as it's got the blue.
31:20So, yeah, when it's not a command, we shouldn't be judging each other, we should allow each other the grace
31:25to go about that.
31:28But, you know, in fasting, that is one of those areas.
31:31If you want to fast, that's great.
31:33If you don't want to fast, that's great as well.
31:35So, don't fast.
31:37And also, in this particular time frame, was rampant paganism, especially in Rome and in other places as well.
31:47But a lot of times, people, when it says that they would only eat vegetables, some would only eat vegetables,
31:53that's because they would not want to buy meat at the market because they were scared that it would have
31:59been sacrificed to an idol,
32:01and they would be eating idolatrous meat, so they would only eat vegetables.
32:05And Paul says, okay, that's fine too, and also whichever day they fast or whichever day they don't fast, that
32:11is acceptable as well.
32:13Notice when we read in other passages that Paul writes, he says that if you don't know where the food
32:19came from,
32:19or whether or not it was sacrificed to idols, don't ask.
32:22Just eat it as it's set in front of you.
32:24But if you do know, then you don't eat it.
32:28So, that's good advice, I think, as well.
32:30We don't have to worry about that so much nowadays, I don't think, especially not in most of America, where
32:35I'm at,
32:36but maybe different in other parts of the world.
32:39But we really don't have a lot of pagan sacrifices going on and then going into the supermarket, as it
32:45were.
32:46No, we just have salmonella outbreaks and stuff like that.
32:49So, it's going on, and it's going pretty quick tonight.
32:53We got a lot of the information, a lot of the processes in last week, so this week's going to
33:00go pretty quick,
33:01since you know a lot about how to do context, stuff like that.
33:04The last one we're going to look at for tonight is the passage in Revelation 1, verse 10, and it
33:11reads as such.
33:12I'll read from the King James Version this time.
33:15The King James Version for Revelation 1.10 says as such,
33:25Now, if you're looking here on the screen, if you're watching the video,
33:29you can see here that I've got three different sections.
33:34And the first two, it says, instead of the Lord's Day, it says the Day of Yahweh, or the Day
33:41of the Lord.
33:41The next section, it actually says Sunday instead of Lord's Day.
33:46And then the final section, I've got the three down there, the ESV, the King James Version, and the LSB.
33:53Let's say the Lord's Day.
33:54Now, why did I put all this up here?
33:56Well, this is very interesting.
33:57Number one, let's look at the middle two right there for just a quick second.
34:01is that when it says Sunday here in the Coverdale Translation and the Matthew Translation,
34:07and there's a few others as well, when they put the word Sunday there,
34:11that is classic eisegesis, reading, and also anachronism as well,
34:17but reading and putting something in the Scriptures that isn't actually there.
34:21It does not say Sunday because the days of the week did not have names in Scriptures.
34:27It's the first day of the week, second day of the week, third day of the week,
34:29except for the seventh day, and the seventh day was called Shabbat or Sabbath.
34:34So putting Sunday there is definitely incorrect, and it's a,
34:40oh, how do I put this in a PC kind of way?
34:46Well, it's a, it's bastardizing the Scriptures, in other words,
34:51because it doesn't actually say Sunday.
34:53It actually says the Lord's Day.
34:56And that's why I read from the King James,
34:57because in the Greek it actually says the Lord's Day.
35:01And the translation that we normally use, the Scriptures 2009,
35:05says the Day of Yahweh.
35:07And that's not as true to the Greek as I think it should be.
35:11So, again, no translation is perfect,
35:13and even the one we like has its imperfections like you see here.
35:17Yeah, the actual Greek is the Lord's Day,
35:21the adjective form that is referencing that word day.
35:26Now, does this actually reference the first day of the week?
35:30Does this actually reference what we know of as Sunday nowadays?
35:34Well, I don't think so.
35:35Take into, again, context, and the context of Revelation is about the end times.
35:40It's called an apocalyptic writing, the Apocalypse of John,
35:43otherwise known as Revelation.
35:44It's about Armageddon, et cetera, et cetera.
35:48And, therefore, that's what I think the day,
35:50or the Lord's Day is actually referencing here.
35:52It's talking about the end time events.
35:55Now, this is the only time in all of Scripture this actual wording comes through.
36:00So it's rather difficult to tie it to other references in Scripture
36:05where it actually uses that exact same phraseology.
36:08But there is a similar phrase we find back in the Tanakh.
36:14And this is called, this is the phrase,
36:16the Day of Yahweh, or the Day of the Lord.
36:20And every single time back in the Tanakh,
36:22when it uses this phrase, the Day of Yahweh,
36:24or the Day of the Lord in certain translations,
36:26it's referencing end time events, apocalyptic events,
36:31such as Isaiah chapter 13, verses 5 through 6.
36:35They are coming from a distant land from the end of the heavens,
36:38even Yahweh and His weapons of displeasure,
36:40to destroy all the earth.
36:42Howl, for the Day of Yahweh is near.
36:44It comes as a destruction from the Almighty.
36:48We also see this in Ezekiel chapter 13, verse 5.
36:52You have not gone up into the breaches,
36:54nor do you build a wall for the house of Israel
36:56who stand in battle on the Day of Yahweh.
37:00And finally, looking at Zephaniah chapter 1, verse 7.
37:04Hush, in the presence of the Master Yahweh,
37:06For the Day of Yahweh is near.
37:09For Yahweh has prepared a slaughter.
37:11He has set apart his invited ones.
37:15So we can see here that, back in the Tanakh at least,
37:18when it has this phrase, the Day of Yahweh,
37:22that it's referencing end times events.
37:25That's why I think, personally,
37:27that when it's talking about the Lord's Day in Revelation chapter 1, verse 10,
37:31it's actually speaking about the end times events,
37:35not the first day of the week,
37:37and not even the seventh day of the week.
37:39Because remember, back in Scripture,
37:40Yeshua said He is Lord of the Sabbath.
37:43And the Sabbath in Scripture is only ever described as the seventh day.
37:48So if He's Lord of the Sabbath in the Lord's Day,
37:51that would naturally lead you to think that it would be the seventh day.
37:55But when you put it together with this phrasing from the Tanakh,
38:00I actually think that the Lord's Day in Revelation 1.10
38:03is referencing the apocalyptic times,
38:06and not any particular day of the week.
38:08Not the seventh, not the first, anything like that.
38:11Here is some more nerdy information for you guys.
38:14Because Lord's Day, there as it's used in Revelation 1.10,
38:19is actually an adjective where Lord's is referenced,
38:23or acting as an adjective to modify that noun day.
38:28So Lord's Day.
38:30Then we got the other phrase that we looked at from the Tanakh,
38:33and this happens even in the Greek Septuagint.
38:35It says, day of the Lord.
38:37So there it is more like a possessive thing,
38:41where the Lord is the possessor of that day,
38:45but I can also see that working with Lord's Day as well.
38:50People make a distinction between these two different phrases,
38:53but I think it's a distinction without a difference, as they say.
38:57Again, feel free to disagree.
38:58If you think this Lord's Day in Revelation 1.10 means Sunday,
39:05that's great.
39:07I disagree, and I think it took us some time for Lord's Day to be in connection with the first
39:14day of the week,
39:14and it wasn't happening here in the book of Revelation at this point in history.
39:19So again, decide for yourself and disagree.
39:22That's fine.
39:23We can still break bread and fellowship together.
39:25But also take into account as well that this is the only time it occurs in all of Scripture,
39:30and it's the only time that this phrase is used in the book of Revelation, obviously,
39:35and there's nothing there in that context.
39:38I should put up the context for you, but you can look at it for yourself.
39:41Revelation chapter 1.
39:43The whole context is about the apocalypse, and it has nothing to do with day of rest.
39:48It has nothing to do with a sacred assembly or getting together or anything like that.
39:55Look at it for yourself and tell me what you think.
39:57Let me know down in the comments.
39:59Do you think this means a particular day of the week, the 1st, the 7th,
40:03or do you think, like me, and it means, or it's actually referencing the apocalyptic times?
40:10It'll be interesting to see if anyone out there has a differing opinion on that,
40:14and also why.
40:15If you have a differing opinion, by all means,
40:18let us know a little bit of the explanation down there as well.
40:22So now, in summary, in Colossians chapter 2, verses 16 through 17,
40:29Paul references the festivals, the new moons, the Sabbaths, etc., etc.,
40:33as things which are, remember, that's the present tense,
40:37are still currently active and ongoing,
40:41not as things that have been done away with.
40:45Colossians chapter 2, verses 16 through 17,
40:47teaches that we do not allow those outside the body of Messiah to judge us
40:51on eating, drinking, festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths,
40:54but rather only those within the body of Messiah.
40:58Those are the ones who are to judge us.
41:03The word Sabbath does not appear in Romans chapter 14, verse 5,
41:07the entire chapter of Romans 14, or in the entire book of Romans.
41:13The context of Romans 14, verse 5 is regarding food and days,
41:18and most likely is strongly pointing to the practice of fasting,
41:23not Sabbath-keeping.
41:26The wording of Revelation chapter 1, verse 10,
41:29the Lord's Day, is most likely referring to the end times events,
41:33which is in keeping with the entire theme of Revelation,
41:36and also the previous phrase that we looked at,
41:39day of the Lord in this knock,
41:41which is referencing end times events.
41:44Context generally illuminates the fallacy that the Sabbath has changed to Sunday,
41:48or that the Sabbath is done away with when examining the passages used,
41:51and we saw that in this particular teaching,
41:54when we look at the verses that are put forth,
41:57we see they're taken out of context,
41:58but when we take all that into context,
42:00we see that, no,
42:02it's usually not referencing Sunday as the Sabbath,
42:06or it's in context referencing something completely different.
42:13And finally, the Sabbath has not been done away with,
42:17and the Sabbath has not changed to Sunday.
42:21And that's just the God-honest truth.
42:24So thank you for joining us for this episode in our Shabbat series,
42:28examining three more arguments and passages from the scriptures that are commonly put forth
