00:00:02Does the New Testament, the Brit Hadashah, tell us that the Sabbath has been changed
00:00:07to the first day of the week from the seventh day of the week?
00:00:10Well that's the idea that a lot of people put forth, and they have put forth several
00:00:15different arguments to substantiate such a claim.
00:00:19In this video, in this teaching, we're going to look at several of these claims put forth
00:00:24from the New Testament, from the Brit Hadashah, and examine them in their context, and in
00:00:31their grammar, and their Greek, and everything else, to see if it's actually true that the
00:00:36Brit Hadashah, or the New Testament, changes the day of the Sabbath from the seventh day
00:00:41to the first day.
00:00:42You don't want to miss a moment of this.
00:00:44There's a lot of good educational stuff coming your way about the Sunday arguments that are
00:00:51commonly used to support Sunday as the Sabbath.
00:00:54You won't want to miss a single moment of this.
00:01:16So this episode is going to be all about arguments that are used for Sunday, and this is in the
00:01:22context of arguments used for saying that Sunday is now the Sabbath.
00:01:27So, that is the context we're going with, and we're presenting what I think of as the top
00:01:33arguments during this particular episode.
00:01:35In the next episode, we're going to be examining even more arguments that are commonly used
00:01:40to promote the idea that the Sabbath was changed unto Sunday.
00:01:44Now, if you'd like more information than what we can provide to you here in this particular
00:01:49video, make sure to go to our website at GodHonestTruth.com, click on the post for this particular

00:02:36It's all right down there in the description, and it should be down there whether you're
00:02:40watching on a video platform or an audio podcasting platform.
00:02:44Now, before we get started into the main part of this teaching, let's go over what the series
00:02:50overview in this complete Sabbath series that we are doing.
00:02:55This particular series is broken up into various episodes so that we will be able to go more
00:03:00in-depth on each particular area that we wanted to cover.
00:03:04Our first episode, we went over Shabbat and the Tanakh and looking at the Sabbath in the
00:03:10Tanakh, or what mainstream churchianity refers to as the Old Testament.
00:03:15Then we looked in episode two at the Sabbath in the Brit Hadashah, or what mainstream churchianity
00:03:21refers to as the New Testament.
00:03:23Then we went on to look at the Sabbath in the early centuries, specifically the time
00:03:28frame of the Apostles, all the way up until about 500 or so.
00:03:34Then in episode four, we looked real quick at Shabbat, the Reformation, the Protestant Reformation,
00:03:39and various miscellaneous things.
00:03:41And some good information there, especially if you don't know a lot about the Reformation,
00:03:46you may think that there is no Sabbath-keeping or Sabbath-realizing people in the Protestant Reformation,
00:03:51and that's just completely untrue.
00:03:53We actually highlighted one particular one, a very big powerhouse in the Reformation that
00:04:00recognized the legitimacy and the continuance of the Seventh-day Sabbath.
00:04:04So go check that out if you would like more information on that particular aspect.
00:04:08Now we're getting into arguments for Sunday as the Sabbath, and this is going to be the top
00:04:13ones, or at least the top ones that I thought were the top ones.
00:04:18We're looking at that tonight, and then next week or next time, we're going to be looking
00:04:22at some additional arguments that are commonly used for Sunday.
00:04:26And then in our last episode, which has gotten moved up for a couple weeks because of splitting
00:04:32this particular episode up, the last episode, we're going to be looking at the Lunar Sabbath.
00:04:37And if you don't know what the Lunar Sabbath is, that is absolutely okay.
00:04:41We're going to go over what it is and also look at a lot of evidence and information and
00:04:48research surrounding the Lunar Sabbath, so you know all about it.
00:04:52And you'll also be able to look at the historical information and the biblical information to
00:04:58decide for yourself whether you agree or disagree with this particular concept.
00:05:04All that's coming up, I know there's a few changes, and I've got to get some of the
00:05:10stuff changed on the slides and also the calendar and all that good stuff, but a lot of stuff
00:05:14coming up, lots of good stuff anyways.
00:05:17So now, for this particular episode, some things I would like you to be on the watch for.
00:05:23Think about how many times in Scripture that Scripture itself explicitly states that the
00:05:30seventh day is the Sabbath, and then compare that to the number of times where Scripture
00:05:35explicitly states that Sunday is the Sabbath, or even the number of times that people put
00:05:43forth something as evidence that the Sabbath has changed to Sunday.
00:05:50Two different concepts there, I know, but count the number of times where it's explicitly
00:05:55stated that seventh day is the Sabbath, and then the number of times where Scripture
00:05:59explicitly states that Sunday is the Sabbath, or the number of passages that people put forth
00:06:04to try and show that Sunday is the Sabbath.
00:06:08Now, as we went through this particular research for this episode, or additional research as well,
00:06:14we kind of come up with four different views when it comes to this whole idea of the Sabbath
00:06:20and also Sunday, because not everyone has the exact same opinion when it comes to this
00:06:27particular subject.
00:06:28Number one, there is the thought or the theory that Sunday is now the new Sabbath
00:06:34for the people of Yahweh.
00:06:37Number two, that Sunday is the Lord's Day, but not the Sabbath.
00:06:42We've kind of seen that with people like John Calvin and Martin Luther and things like that,
00:06:48and we've seen that in some of the historical information we've looked through as well.
00:06:53Number three, there is also the people out there who hold to the seventh-day Sabbath
00:06:58and how it remains binding, continuous, and things like that.
00:07:02That is the position that we are currently taking.
00:07:07Number four, there's also the position out there that there is no required Sabbath
00:07:11to observe anymore now that they say that we are in the new covenant.
00:07:18You can take that for how you will, but that's kind of what they say,
00:07:20that once Yeshua came, that he had his ministry, he died, was buried, and resurrected, and ascended,
00:07:29that now they say there is no more Sabbath observance.
00:07:32And this is kind of more along the lines of Martin Luther, as we looked at back then.
00:07:38Yeah, Martin Luther kind of thought there was no more Sabbath observance that was binding,
00:07:44and that Sunday was just convenient because everyone was already used to that.
00:07:47So, yeah, there's four different kind of ways of looking at this whole subject of Sunday and also the Sabbath.
00:07:55So keep that in mind.
00:07:56Try to think about where you are now, which position you are in at the moment,
00:08:01and then when we get done and looking at some of the scriptures
00:08:04and looking at some of the exegetical information that we're going to go over,
00:08:08think about where you are at that point as well.
00:08:13But before we get into the actual scripture itself, I know you're just dying for it.
00:08:18You're, most of you out there are nerdy as I am.
00:08:21Let's go over some elementary matters to try and keep in mind as we go through this particular teaching.
00:08:27All right, so number one, there's this concept called hermeneutics,
00:08:31and I'm not going to get into great detail on all these elementary things.
00:08:35So just for a reference, you can look more into this if you want to,
00:08:40but the principles of hermeneutics are, we're going to boil them down for you,
00:08:44but there is the literal principle.
00:08:46This is where you take the literal meaning of what is actually stated.
00:08:51Then you've got the contextual principle, and you want to definitely take everything into context,
00:08:56and that's where a lot of people go wrong.
00:08:58And when we look at the particular passages that are put forth in this particular teaching,
00:09:03you're going to see that context plays a big role in understanding what it actually says when we look at
00:09:11that.
00:09:12Then you've got the principle of scriptural harmony,
00:09:14where the basic concept is that scripture does not contradict scripture.
00:09:20The grammatical principle, where you get really nerdy,
00:09:22you start looking at how certain things are put together with verbs and nouns,
00:09:27and how they're conjugated, et cetera, et cetera.
00:09:30So yeah, this is going to play its part in one particular section coming up here as well.
00:09:37You'll be able to recognize that when we get to it.
00:09:39But another principle is the historical and the cultural principle,
00:09:45understanding how when the particular passage was written,
00:09:49how the author meant it at the time in the cultural and historical context,
00:09:53and how the readers who read it at the time would have taken it in their cultural and historical context.
00:10:01Then you've got the genre, whether it's a poetic, a historical narrative, an apocalyptic, et cetera, et cetera.
00:10:10Then you've got the progressive revelation principle,
00:10:12which you definitely don't want to take this too far.
00:10:14It's not saying that, you know, things came about after scripture that contradict scripture and supersedes scripture.
00:10:21No, nothing like that.
00:10:22It's basically building on itself, and it progressively builds on itself.
00:10:27You've got the prophecies that are a lot of times not very specific about Messiah back in the Tanakh.
00:10:35But then when Messiah comes, that is an example of progressive revelation,
00:10:40because we now understand more about what those prophecies were relating to, et cetera, et cetera.
00:10:47Then you've got the authorial intent principle,
00:10:49and this kind of goes back into the historical cultural principle,
00:10:52where you're looking at what the actual author meant when they wrote whatever passage we're particularly looking at.
00:11:00Then you've got the concept of sola scriptura, and this is going to be very, very important.
00:11:06We saw that in the Reformation episode, where Johann Eck was coming against Martin Luther and the Reformers,
00:11:12judging, I mean, calling them hypocrites because they wanted to say sola scriptura,
00:11:17but then not hold the sola scriptura.
00:11:20For anyone who's new out there that's never heard this,
00:11:23sola scriptura is the principle that Scripture alone is the ultimate infallible authority for our faith,
00:11:30our practice, our doctrine, and it serves as the final court of appeal for all doctrine.
00:11:36This is going to be very important when we look at the subject of the Sabbath,
00:11:40because we want to know when the Sabbath is, how to celebrate and observe the Sabbath according to Scripture,
00:11:47not the ever-changing, wavering traditions of man.
00:11:53Then we've got, this is going to be coming to play really big, too,
00:11:58especially when we look at the various passages that we're going to be looking at tonight.
00:12:02And this is the distinction between things that are, especially the epistles and things like that,
00:12:11distinction between descriptive and prescriptive.
00:12:16You'll see why when we go through these here in just a little bit.
00:12:19But, but, descriptive is a passage that records or details what happened historically
00:12:24without necessarily commanding or approving of the behavior for everyone.
00:12:31You can think of many different examples and scriptures of that.
00:12:34But, descriptive is just basically saying what happened is not issuing a new command
00:12:39or telling you to do anything in particular.
00:12:42It's just describing something.
00:12:43Prescriptive, on the other hand, is a passage that explicitly commands or establishes
00:12:48an ongoing rule for how readers should live, think, or act.
00:12:53Think of the Ten Commandments.
00:12:55The Ten Commandments are prescriptive.
00:12:58Prescriptive, that is how you know the difference here between descriptive and prescriptive,
00:13:03where descriptive is just describing something.
00:13:06Prescriptive is telling you to do something or how to do something, things like that.
00:13:10This is going to be very important as we look at these different passages that are concerning the Sabbath.
00:13:17You need to understand and distinguish between these passages being descriptive or prescriptive
00:13:23and prescribing a new day of the week for Sunday.
00:13:27Then we've got the concepts of eisegesis and exegesis.
00:13:31Exegesis is the process of drawing out the original intended true meaning from a text
00:13:37based on what the author actually intended to communicate.
00:13:41Now, this is something you can do with any literary work, but most of the time it's done with the
00:13:46Bible.
00:13:47Then you've got eisegesis, and this is just the exact opposite.
00:13:50We went over this in the past, but it does bear repeating.
00:13:54Eisegesis is the practice of reading your own bias, your own modern assumptions,
00:13:59or your own preconceived ideas into a text, forcing it to say whatever it is you want it to say.
00:14:07You can obviously think of various things that come into play here.
00:14:11Again, this is going to be very, very important as we go through these passages as well.
00:14:15Well, like with all doctrine, we want to exegete what the Bible is telling us,
00:14:20not read our own traditions and our own church ideas into the text.
00:14:26We want the text, the Bible, to change us, not us changing the Bible.
00:14:31Then we've got the concept of anachronism.
00:14:33And this is a word that you may or may not know, but basically anachronism is taking something and –
00:14:41well, let me read this.
00:14:42It's the era of placing a person, object, event, or modern idea into a historical time period where it did
00:14:47not yet exist.
00:14:49Now, one example of this is like saying that Abraham Lincoln had a Dell laptop.
00:14:58Okay, that's anachronistic to say that.
00:15:00In this example, or in this subject, in this context, we know that in a particular section of time in
00:15:10Scripture,
00:15:11the seventh day was the Sabbath.
00:15:14No doubt.
00:15:15Everyone completely agrees on that.
00:15:16Then, nowadays, modern Christianity, modern churchianity, holds to Sunday as the Sabbath.
00:15:24But at some point, it changed.
00:15:28We've got to find out when that point was and why it changed.
00:15:32But we cannot read our own modern ideas back into Scripture and think it was always that way because it's
00:15:39not true.
00:15:39So keep that in mind.
00:15:41We want to pull out from what the text is telling us, not place our own ideas that we have
00:15:46nowadays back into the text because that would create circular reasoning.
00:15:50But that's what anachronism is.
00:15:52We want to be careful not to be anachronistic when we study this subject of the Sabbath.
00:15:58Then we look at confirmation bias, and this happens to every single person.
00:16:03So no matter how much you say that you are not biased, every single human being has bias.
00:16:09Just admit it and put it out there and understand and recognize it.
00:16:13But confirmation bias is the mental tendency to search for, favor, and recall information that supports your existing beliefs while
00:16:21completely ignoring or downplaying evidence that contradicts them.
00:16:24Now, a lot of times, confirmation bias happens in the background that we're not really consciously aware of a lot
00:16:31of times, but it does happen.
00:16:35And we need to be aware of that and try to combat that and be understanding that you probably have
00:16:40or you most definitely have confirmation bias because everyone has confirmation bias.
00:16:45Then we got to look at context.
00:16:47We looked at this a little bit within the principles of hermeneutics, but context is examining a specific statement within
00:16:54its surrounding verses, historical setting, and literary genre to ensure its meaning aligns with the author's complete message.
00:17:02If you take something out of context, you can use it to say a lot of different things that's not
00:17:09what the author actually meant.
00:17:12It's not what the passage or the Bible is actually saying.
00:17:15This is going to be huge when we examine these various passages here in just a moment, and I'm going
00:17:21to show you what the verse is that's put forth, and then I'm going to show you a lot of
00:17:27the context around it so you can actually see for yourselves that it comes alive when you look at the
00:17:32context.
00:17:33And you're thinking, oh, that actually doesn't mean that.
00:17:35It means something completely different.
00:17:38So that's context, taking the passage or the verse in the, I don't say context, but yeah, in the context
00:17:47of the surrounding verses and the historical setting, the cultural setting, et cetera, et cetera.
00:17:53Now, another thing I want you to look at and keep in mind, too, when we look at this subject
00:17:59of the Sabbath is remembering what the various attributes are of the Sabbath as it's described in Scripture.
00:18:07In the Tanakh, the Sabbath is commonly described as a day of rest, very big.
00:18:13That's the biggest attribute that's ascribed to the Sabbath is the day of rest.
00:18:20That's the main point of the Sabbath.
00:18:23Then you got the Sabbath being a sign between Yahweh and his people.
00:18:27It's directly described in connection with the creation in Exodus and then also the Exodus itself and Deuteronomy.
00:18:35And then the Sabbath is directly described as being made holy by Yahweh.
00:18:40Actually, the very first thing as made holy and set apart and blessed back during the creation week.
00:18:47And the first thing to be set apart, made holy, was a period of time, not a place, not a
00:18:53people, not a temple or a tabernacle or anything like that.
00:18:57It was the seventh day.
00:18:59So the Sabbath was directly described as being blessed by Yahweh and being made holy by Yahweh.
00:19:06Now, some other things to look at, too, is the Sabbath and how and why people gathered together.
00:19:15Because the Sabbath is not something where people always gathered together.
00:19:19You had Moses up on the mountain, Mount Sinai, for 40 days and 40 nights, came down, went back up
00:19:2540 days and 40 nights.
00:19:26And during that time he was on the mountain, obviously he didn't come and congregate with the people down below.
00:19:34Yeshua, likewise, was in the wilderness being tempted by Satan for 40 days and 40 nights.
00:19:39He also, our Messiah, during that time, did not come out and congregate with other people.
00:19:46So the Sabbath is not directly associated with getting together or assembling together.
00:19:52It's a good idea, yes, but it's not a requirement, obviously.
00:19:58But there are times when people do gather together and it's not always the Sabbath.
00:20:04There are times when people worship together and it's not always the Sabbath.
00:20:07In fact, one of the biggest questions I like to ask people, especially mainstream Christians, when it comes to the
00:20:13subject of the Sabbath, is what day is the day of worship in the week?
00:20:19And, you know, a lot of times they'll say something like Sunday.
00:20:22Or if they're from Messianic mindset, maybe they even might say Saturday.
00:20:27But that's not true.
00:20:29Every day should be the day of worship, the day we worship Yahweh, not just one day of the week.
00:20:36So keep that in mind, too.
00:20:38But there are times people gather together and times people worship that weren't always the Sabbath.
00:20:44Israel, Yahweh's people, they worshiped on many different days.
00:20:49The temple itself ran and functioned every single day without break.
00:20:57Seriously, that's why they had the different courses of the priest, because it went every single day.
00:21:03And people got together and went to the temple every single day.
00:21:06We looked at, when we looked at, oh, the birth of Yeshua.
00:21:12And it talks about Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, being there and burning incense.
00:21:18And we looked at the information back in the Snoch about the altar of incense, and that was burning morning
00:21:24and evening.
00:21:26So getting together at the temple, praying at the temple, making sacrifices at the temple, this is something that people
00:21:30did every single day.
00:21:33The temple ran every day.
00:21:34These sacrifices, again, were offered and were done morning and evening of every single day.
00:21:42People got together during those times.
00:21:45Prayer occurred throughout the day, and people got together a lot of times to pray together.
00:21:50Likewise, Christians nowadays may gather on any day of the week, not just one particular day.
00:21:57They did that back in the times of the apostles.
00:22:00We see in the book of Acts, where it says that they got together and were breaking bread from house
00:22:05to house every single day on a daily basis.
00:22:09Acts records gatherings on various occasions.
00:22:12Gathering on Sunday is not identical to declaring Sunday the Sabbath.
00:22:17So when you look at these passages and you see a group of people getting together, just because they get
00:22:22together does not automatically make that a Sunday worship church service.
00:22:28It doesn't.
00:22:29That would be anachronistic to read that into these scriptures.
00:22:34That would be eisegetical to read that back into these scriptures.
00:22:37That's fallacious.
00:22:39The distinction here is definitely very crucial.
00:22:44Notice that just because people get together, that doesn't make it a worship service, and it doesn't prove that whatever
00:22:51day they're getting together on is the Sabbath, because people got together all the time.
00:22:57Other times they got together for gathering times.
00:23:01One common misunderstanding is assuming that any religious gathering occurring on a particular day automatically establishes that day as a
00:23:09holy day.
00:23:10So just like getting together doesn't make that day a Sabbath or the Sabbath, getting together on any particular day
00:23:16doesn't make it a holy day.
00:23:17It doesn't make it a moedim.
00:23:21What makes it a holy day, a moedim?
00:23:25What makes a particular day a moedim is what is commanded and set apart by Yahweh, not by us, not
00:23:32by a pope or a priest or a preacher or a reverend or anything like that.
00:23:37What makes the particular day in question a moedim is because Yahweh said so.
00:23:46So Hebrew life included gatherings throughout the week.
00:23:50We already discussed the getting together with the temple in the morning and evening for the sacrifices and the incense
00:23:56and the prayers, et cetera, et cetera.
00:23:58So once again, people got together throughout the week, not just one particular day of the week, not just the
00:24:04first day of the week and not just the Sabbath day of the week.
00:24:06They got together almost every single day if they weren't working or didn't have anything else to do.
00:24:14There was synagogue gatherings.
00:24:16There was prayer times.
00:24:17We already went over that.
00:24:18There was festival assemblies.
00:24:20Now, think about that.
00:24:22Sometimes it does say to get together, like when we go to Yom Terawah or Yom Kippurim or Sukkot, Pesach,
00:24:29things like that.
00:24:30That is a recommended time to get together.
00:24:34So there's other times other than Sabbath that people got together.
00:24:39There was temple services, like we said earlier.
00:24:42There's also study gatherings that had them in way back then.
00:24:45There was community meetings, obviously, for discussing various things of whether it be religious life or community life or national
00:24:53life.
00:24:54But they had community meetings just like we do nowadays.
00:24:58The existence of a gathering does not automatically define that day as a Sabbath.
00:25:04Obviously, just because they're getting together, that does not mean that it's a Sunday, that it's a church service, that
00:25:13it's a worship service or anything like that.
00:25:15That would be completely isogenical and anachronistic unless it says, hey, these people got together because it was the new
00:25:24day of the Sabbath.
00:25:25And that's why they got together and they only ever got together on the Sabbath.
00:25:30And you're not going to find that.
00:25:31That's not in Scripture.
00:25:32So now let's go ahead and start with our first passage that I would like to bring up.
00:25:38And one of the things that I think is one of the most, we say, impactful passages that are put
00:25:46up by people who want to say that Sunday is the new Sabbath.
00:25:50And this is Acts 20, verse 7.
00:25:53The verse reads as such.
00:25:56And on day one of the week, the taught ones, having gathered together to break bread, Shaul, or Paul, intending
00:26:02to depart the next day, was reasoning with them and was extending the word till midnight.
00:26:09Stop right there.
00:26:10This is all we're going to look at right now.
00:26:11Now, this is put forth a lot of times by Sunday proponents as saying this is an example of a
00:26:18church gathering and example of how people were celebrating Sunday as the Sabbath instead of the seventh day as the
00:26:26Sabbath.
00:26:27Because it says here they got together on the day one of the week.
00:26:32They got together.
00:26:34And they broke bread.
00:26:36This is the Eucharist, right?
00:26:38And Paul was going to depart the next day on Monday.
00:26:42And they say that's an example of showing how the early believers already were switching over to Sunday as the
00:26:49Sabbath.
00:26:51Lots of things wrong with that way of reasoning.
00:26:53And we're going to flesh that out in more detail coming up.
00:26:57But first, keep in mind the whole issue of context.
00:27:02So let's read this in a greater context now, looking at Acts 20, verses 1 through 12.
00:27:11After the uproar had ceased, Shaul called the Taut Ones to him and having embraced them, went away to Macedonia.
00:27:18And having gone through those parts and having encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece where he spent
00:27:23three months.
00:27:24When he was about to sail to Syria, he decided to return through Macedonia as a plot was made against
00:27:31him by the Yehudim.
00:27:32And he was accompanied by Sopater of Beroia and Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians and Gaios of Derbe and
00:27:41Timotios and Tuchikos and Trophimus of Asia.
00:27:45And these, going ahead, waited for us at Troas.
00:27:49And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread and came to them at Troas in five
00:27:56days, where we stayed seven days.
00:27:59And on day one of the week, the Taut Ones, having gathered together to break bread, Shaul, intending to depart
00:28:06the next day, was reasoning with them and was extending the word until midnight.
00:28:11And there were many lamps in the upper room where they were assembled.
00:28:15And a certain young man by name Eutychos was sitting in a window, being overpowered by deep sleep.
00:28:23As Shaul kept on reasoning, he was overcome by sleep and fell down from the third story and was picked
00:28:29up dead.
00:28:30And Shaul, having gone down, fell on him and embracing him, said, Do not be upset, for his life is
00:28:37in him.
00:28:37Then going up again and having broken bread and eaten, he talked a long while, even until daybreak, and so
00:28:44went forth.
00:28:45And they brought the young man in alive and were encouraged, not a little.
00:28:50So hopefully that gives you a greater context to understand what exactly is going on here.
00:28:55So looking back all the way at verse one and then going all the way through to verse 12,
00:28:59We see Paul and his traveling companions, which would also include Luke, who is the author, who is the commonly
00:29:06attributed author of the book of Acts.
00:29:10But anyways, Paul and his traveling companions are going from place to place.
00:29:13We'll go back and look here at verses one through six.
00:29:17And it says the various places he went through and people he was traveling with him.
00:29:23And it really just makes reference as to where he was and then where he went to and then who
00:29:29was with him.
00:29:30It doesn't really set a precedent for much of anything.
00:29:33You can also see here it says that they sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread.
00:29:41Remember that as we go forward here.
00:29:42Hopefully this gives you a better context because now you start to see exactly what is going on when you
00:29:49don't just take one verse out of context.
00:29:53Now, one thing that could have been done is that this could have been put forth to establish a precedent
00:29:59for a new day or the Sabbath.
00:30:02The author could have described Paul as having had a first day meeting in each of the towns that are
00:30:09described, establishing an actual precedent.
00:30:12But he doesn't.
00:30:13The main point relayed is the resurrection of Eutychus, showing that Paul was endowed with the spirit of the holy
00:30:19to work miracles.
00:30:21This emphasizes and illustrates Paul's credentials as an apostle and also illustrates the spirit of the holy living within him,
00:30:31empowering him to do various miracles like resurrecting the dead.
00:30:49Notice there, when it talks about each of these places that Paul went to, it doesn't say that he met
00:30:55with them on the first day of the week and was teaching them how the Sabbath had been changed.
00:31:00No.
00:31:01It never mentions Paul doing anything on any particular day of the week until we get to Troas, and it
00:31:07just happened to be that particular day of the week.
00:31:12And the point of this whole passage, we just read it, and you can see it a lot better when
00:31:16you look at it in context, the point is the resurrection of Eutychus.
00:31:20That's the point, not a change in the Sabbath.
00:31:23And in fact, you start looking at getting really deep in the weeds and looking at some of the Greek
00:31:29grammar and Greek words here.
00:31:30The word, let me go back here, in verse 7, where it says that Shaul, intending to depart the next
00:31:37day, was reasoning with them.
00:31:39The word used there is a word to indicate and mean discourse, talking back and forth, not a sermon, where
00:31:47you would just sit down, listen to somebody say something, and then go home.
00:31:51That's not what is conveying here.
00:31:52That word used there is back and forth discourse, not a sermon.
00:31:57So again, more evidence that this is not saying that it's a Sunday service that most people are used to
00:32:03nowadays.
00:32:05So that's a bit of evidence there, but we're going to go even more, even deeper here.
00:32:15Again, realize that it does not say anything about what he did to the other places just here, and that's
00:32:20because Eutychus fell to his death.
00:32:22And think about the context here as well.
00:32:26Look into the academic reports that we had generated here.
00:32:30You can look and read those for yourself.
00:32:32But here in Troas, this building they were in was more like an apartment building that we're used to now,
00:32:38where the lower class people would be confined or kind of packed in there against each other, like they are
00:32:47now in apartment buildings.
00:32:48And the more wealthy people in the city would have housed all to themselves.
00:32:53But here they are on the third floor, and they don't have electricity at this time.
00:32:57They're using oil lamps and things like that for lights because it's in the nighttime.
00:33:03It says they're just conversing and discussing with them until midnight.
00:33:09So they have these lights going on to see having a light in that particular room.
00:33:14So you've got carbon monoxide going as well.
00:33:17All these people crammed in there.
00:33:18It's getting hot.
00:33:19They've probably retired at this point, especially Eutychus.
00:33:23So he's got the physical exhaustion.
00:33:25He's got the heat from everybody being in there, all that body heat and the carbon monoxide all together.
00:33:31And this makes him drowsy to where he falls out of the third story window.
00:33:36And then Paul goes down there and resurrects this young man.
00:33:43And that's the point of this particular description in the book of Acts.
00:33:50It's not a Sunday Sabbath change.
00:33:53Nothing like that.
00:33:54The author does mention something else, though.
00:33:56The author does make sure to mention that they sailed to Troas after the Days of Unleavened Bread.
00:34:04Obviously, they were still keeping the Feast, the Feast of Unleavened Bread or Pesach,
00:34:08whichever you want to call it, and not some new Easter resurrection memorial.
00:34:14This would have been a great time for the author, which is commonly attributed to Luke,
00:34:19and we have no reason to doubt that.
00:34:20It would have been a great time for the author, Luke, to reference a new holiday to commemorate
00:34:25the resurrection, but he doesn't do that whatsoever.
00:34:29There is no mention of a Resurrection Sunday, no mention of a Resurrection Easter, nothing
00:34:36like that.
00:34:37But they do mention Unleavened Bread.
00:34:42So keep that in mind.
00:34:44But now, considering the Sabbath, there is nothing in this passage about rest or worship.
00:34:52Now, believe me, read it in your own translation or go back in these slides and look at it for
00:34:57yourself.
00:34:58Nothing in here that is about rest or worship.
00:35:04And what is the number one thing ascribed to the Sabbath in Scripture?
00:35:11Rest.
00:35:12Day of rest.
00:35:13There's nothing in here about rest or worship.
00:35:18Now, it does say on day one of the week, and the Greek there is miaton sabbaton, the first
00:35:24of the Sabbath, or first of the Sabbath.
00:35:27And that was a common way for people back then to reference the first day of the week,
00:35:33what we would now call Sunday, if you're in a, oh, how do I say this without being offensive,
00:35:39in a more modern Gregorian calendar adhering kind of culture, like we are here in America.
00:35:46It would be Sunday, but, you know, miaton sabbaton was a way to reference the first day of the
00:35:51week.
00:35:52So that is true.
00:35:54It does say first day of the week, but it wasn't about a Sabbath gathering.
00:35:59It wasn't about a new day for a new day for the Sabbath or anything like that, or that
00:36:06the Sabbath had been done away with.
00:36:07No, it was just referencing the first day of the week.
00:36:09Now, also, keep in mind, too, that Scripture itself delineates a day as starting at sunset.
00:36:17It goes from sunset to sunset according to the Bible.
00:36:20So what's going on here is that when it got dark, that is the time frame that Acts 20,
00:36:27verse 7 is referencing here, is that Paul got together with all these other people in Troas
00:36:34in the evening at dark and was preaching until midnight.
00:36:39Then he was going to be leaving and did leave on the next morning.
00:36:45So think about this.
00:36:46If Sunday was the actual new day of rest, according to the theory put forth by some people,
00:36:54then why in the world would Paul go and do this teaching and this conversing back and
00:37:00forth with people on Saturday evening and then leave on a day and make this big, long journey,
00:37:09big, long, strenuous, dangerous journey on what's now supposed to be the new day of rest.
00:37:14See, that doesn't line up either.
00:37:17So, again, this is not about a change in the Sabbath.
00:37:21Another thing, we took some various verses here around Acts 20, verse 7 into context,
00:37:28but let's take the entire book of Acts into context as well as we think about this particular
00:37:34subject.
00:37:36Luke, in the first five chapters of Acts, makes many, many different references to the Tanakh
00:37:44and also quotes from the Tanakh, illustrating where our faith came from and also continuity
00:37:49from what came before.
00:37:51And what came before was the Torah and that included Shabbat.
00:37:56Here are a bunch of those in the first five chapters of Acts for you to go and look at
00:38:03for yourself.
00:38:05Then, in chapter 6, Luke makes sure to mention and detail the martyrdom of Stephen, who was
00:38:13the first martyr of the faith, to state that it was false witnesses that stated Stephen and
00:38:20by extension Yeshua and the rest of the apostles had done away with the Torah.
00:38:25So, let's just take a moment real quick to read that.
00:38:28Acts chapter 6, verses 13 through 14.
00:38:31And they set up false witnesses who said,
00:38:34This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this set-apart place and the
00:38:39Torah, for we have heard him saying that this Yeshua of Nazareth shall overthrow this place
00:38:44and change the institutes which Moshe delivered unto us.
00:38:49Okay, so let's break this down real quick to see what's going on.
00:38:53Here in Acts chapter 6, verses 13 and 14, it says specifically that they set up false witnesses.
00:39:03Stop right there for a moment.
00:39:04What is a false witness?
00:39:06It's a liar.
00:39:07Plain and simple.
00:39:09A liar.
00:39:10So, these Jews, they set up liars who then came and said,
00:39:17This man, Stephen, does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this set-apart place
00:39:23and the Torah.
00:39:25This is what the liars are saying about Stephen and Yeshua and the apostles and everyone connected
00:39:32like that.
00:39:33These liars are saying that they are speaking against the Torah.
00:39:37They even say that they heard Yeshua and others say that he shall overthrow this place, meaning
00:39:44the temple.
00:39:45And they also said they heard Yeshua say that he was going to change the institutes which
00:39:51Moshe delivered unto us.
00:39:53This is what the liars are saying.
00:39:55Therefore, we know it's the exact opposite of what they are saying.
00:40:02They're saying that Stephen and Yeshua and Paul and Luke, etc., etc., are going against
00:40:09the Torah.
00:40:10And if liars are saying that, then we know for a fact that Paul and Yeshua and Luke, etc.,
00:40:16etc., were for the Torah.
00:40:18And there's more evidence than just this.
00:40:21What is also included in the Torah?
00:40:24The seventh day Sabbath.
00:40:26So when we get to this point, oh, I'm sorry, let me go on just one more time.
00:40:32Paul also proved his intentions and how he felt about the Torah as well in Acts chapter
00:40:3921, verses 18 through 24.
00:40:42We'll look at that in just a moment.
00:40:45Again, in the first five chapters of Acts, the sixth chapter of Acts, the 20th chapter and
00:40:51the 21st, and all the chapters of Acts are attributed to Luke.
00:40:57And we see in the first five chapters that Luke is quoting from and referencing these
00:41:03various passages from the Tanakh.
00:41:06We see that Luke is telling us that it was liars that said that Stephen and the early
00:41:12believers were against the Torah.
00:41:14We also, we're going to read here in just a moment, but we see that Paul proved himself
00:41:19to be Torah obedient.
00:41:20We see Luke describing and telling us all this.
00:41:23So why now in Acts chapter 20 would Luke then try to insinuate a change in the Sabbath or
00:41:33the Torah when he spent all this time showing that he was pro-Torah, pro-seventh-day Sabbath,
00:41:41and then why is it just in chapter 20 that now Luke is a Sunday Sabbath keeper?
00:41:50It's, it makes zero sense.
00:41:53And it's more evidence as to why this is absolutely false and how Acts 20, verse 7 does not show
00:42:01a change in the Sabbath for the believers.
00:42:05Now, addressing Paul, let's look at that real quick.
00:42:08Acts chapter 21, verses 18 through 24.
00:42:12And on the following day, Shaul went in with us to Yaakov, and all the elders came.
00:42:17And having greeted them, he was relating one by one what Elohim had done among the nations
00:42:22through his service.
00:42:23And when they heard it, they praised the master, and they said to him, You see, brother, how
00:42:29many thousands of Yehudim there are who have believed and are all ardent for the Torah.
00:42:35But they have been informed about you that you teach all the Yehudim who are among the
00:42:41nations to forsake Moshe, saying not to circumcise the children, nor to walk according to the
00:42:47practices.
00:42:48What then is it?
00:42:49They shall certainly hear that you have come.
00:42:52So do this, what we say to you.
00:42:54We have four men who have taken a vow.
00:42:57Take them and be cleansed with them and pay their expenses so that they shave their heads.
00:43:02And all shall know that what they have been informed about you is not so, but that you
00:43:08yourself also walk orderly, keeping the Torah.
00:43:14So what was going around about Stephen was also going around about Paul.
00:43:19There were liars saying that Paul taught against circumcision, saying not to circumcise your
00:43:26children.
00:43:27There were liars saying that Paul taught against the Torah to forsake the practices, the Torah
00:43:34that they had been raised with and had known all their lives.
00:43:39But they said to Paul, these elders, they said to Paul, we want you to prove that this is
00:43:46not so.
00:43:47Go do this vow and prove that you yourself keep the Torah.
00:43:53And what did Paul do?
00:43:55Paul took that Nazarite vow and proved that he did keep the Torah.
00:44:02This is the apostle to the Gentiles, Paul, and he's proven that he's setting the example
00:44:09of keeping the Torah, even to the Gentiles, who he's hoping will come into the faith instead
00:44:16of continuing to be Gentile.
00:44:19So take that into your thought process as you consider this particular passage of Acts 20,
00:44:26verse 7.
00:44:28One of the biggest things that is put forth a lot of times, and we saw this especially
00:44:33when we looked at the history of the early church and the change of the Sabbath day,
00:44:40is that people like Justin Martyr, etc., etc., put forth the day of the resurrection as
00:44:47proof for the change in the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day.
00:44:53They say that because Yeshua arose on the first day, therefore, the first day of the
00:45:00week is now the new Sabbath, because it's the beginning of the new creation and various
00:45:05sophistry like that.
00:45:08But is that true?
00:45:09Let's look at four different passages, one from each of the Gospels.
00:45:13Matthew 28, verse 1.
00:45:16But late in the Sabbath, as it was dawning into day one of the week, Miriam from Magdala and
00:45:22the other Miriam came to see the tomb.
00:45:25Then we go on to Mark, chapter 16, verse 2.
00:45:27And very early on day one of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
00:45:33Then in Luke, chapter 24, verse 1.
00:45:35But on day one of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices
00:45:39which they had prepared.
00:45:40And finally, John, chapter 20, verse 1.
00:45:43And on day one of the week, Miriam from Magdala came early to the tomb while it was still
00:45:47dark and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
00:45:52Now, we're going to take each one of these and break them down into even further depth.
00:45:56So hang on with us if it doesn't make sense right now.
00:45:59But it's an established fact that Yeshua was first noticed, resurrected, but first noticed
00:46:06as being resurrected on the first day of the week.
00:46:11If you looked at or saw any of our teachings on Passover, Easter, you know that he did
00:46:17not resurrect on the first day of the week, not what we call the first day of the week,
00:46:22not what we would call the first day of the week, but rather at sunset immediately after
00:46:30the Sabbath day, the seventh day of the week, what we call Saturday.
00:46:33But according to biblical reckoning, it would be the beginning of the first day of the week.
00:46:39Anyways, that's getting really nerdy and specific, but I think it does bear repeating.
00:46:45Anyways, Matthew 28, verse 1.
00:46:48I'm sorry, let me back up real quick.
00:46:50The way that many Christians or mainstream churchianity sees it nowadays as far as this
00:46:56argument is put forth is the way they reason is this, that creation was completed on the
00:47:02seventh day, the original creation.
00:47:05Redemption was completed in Christ.
00:47:08We've already discussed this a little bit earlier.
00:47:09Christ rose on the first day, so they believe.
00:47:13Therefore, the first day became the Sabbath.
00:47:15But that is faulty reasoning for several different reasons.
00:47:21This reasoning has been influential in many different traditions, and you can probably think
00:47:26of some on your own right now.
00:47:27Now, we examined some of those as we went through the Reformation period and also the early church
00:47:33history and stuff like that.
00:47:35But we have to ask ourselves whether this connection, whether this type of reasoning is actually made
00:47:41by Scripture itself.
00:47:44The question is not which day the resurrection occurred, not in this particular study, but rather
00:47:52the question is whether the Scriptures presents that as a change in the fourth commandment, as a change
00:47:57in the Sabbath commandment.
00:47:59That's the actual question that we need to keep in mind.
00:48:03So, now let's look at Matthew chapter 28, verse 1.
00:48:09But late in the Sabbath, as it was dawning into day one of the week, Miriam from Magdala and the
00:48:14other
00:48:14Miriam came to see the tomb.
00:48:18That's how it's rendered or translated in the Scriptures 2009 translation, which we commonly
00:48:24use here at God Honest Truth.
00:48:26Other translations, such as the ESV, the King James, the LSB, and the TLV, say after the
00:48:33Sabbath.
00:48:34And this is very interesting once you start to think about it.
00:48:39The resurrection, as we stated earlier, or at least as far as we can tell, happened after
00:48:44the Sabbath had ended, so after sunset, and probably right after sunset.
00:48:49Matthew does not say that the Sabbath was moved, altered, or replaced.
00:48:55Rather, he distinguishes between both the Sabbath and the first day of the week.
00:49:00And this is important, because this is even after the death, burial, and resurrection of
00:49:05Yeshua.
00:49:06Matthew, in his gospel, is still making a distinction between the Sabbath day and the first day.
00:49:14He's not making them one.
00:49:15He's not saying that the first day is now the new Sabbath.
00:49:18Nothing like that.
00:49:19He's making a sharp, clear distinction between the Sabbath and the first day.
00:49:27Right there.
00:49:28Look at it yourself.
00:49:29If Matthew intended to teach that the first day had become the Sabbath, though, one would
00:49:35expect some indication that the two days were now identified with each other.
00:49:40Instead, Matthew keeps them as distinct categories in the gospel of Matthew.
00:49:48Very important to realize here.
00:49:50So, Matthew obviously did not get the memo that the Sabbath had been changed.
00:49:56So, that's the resurrection narrative from, or the resurrection argument from the book of
00:50:04Matthew, going on, looking at Mark chapter 16, verses 1 and 2.
00:50:10And when the Sabbath was passed, Miriam from Magdala and Miriam, the mother of Jacob, and Shaloma
00:50:16bought spices to go and anoint him.
00:50:20And very early on day one of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.
00:50:26Listen, once again, this, the book of Mark, the gospel of Mark, is making a clear distinction
00:50:33between the Sabbath and the first day of the week.
00:50:38Again, it's saying that the Sabbath was already gone and passed.
00:50:41It was over.
00:50:44Then, they go into the first day of the week, thereby indicating that they did not think of Sunday, or
00:50:53the first day of the week, as the new Sabbath.
00:50:55Just like with Matthew, Mark did not get the memo that the Sabbath had been changed, for whatever reason.
00:51:04And one more thing, too.
00:51:06When we looked at the elementary matters back in the beginning of this particular teaching, we wanted to distinguish between
00:51:13prescriptive and descriptive passages.
00:51:17This is a descriptive passage.
00:51:20It's not giving us any commands.
00:51:21It's not telling us how to do something, when to do something, why to do something, anything like that.
00:51:26It's just describing something.
00:51:28So, this is a descriptive passage.
00:51:30All of these resurrection passages are, they are descriptive, not prescriptive, not prescribing a new day of Sabbath.
00:51:40Then, going on, looking at Luke 23, 55-24, verse 1.
00:51:47This really hits hard, I'll say that.
00:51:53Luke 23, 55-24, 1.
00:51:56And the women who had come with him from Galil, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body
00:52:01was laid.
00:52:02And having returned, they prepared spices and perfumes, and they rested on the Sabbath, according to the command.
00:52:08But on day one of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices, which they
00:52:13had prepared.
00:52:15This is according to the Scriptures 2009 translation, once again.
00:52:21Notice, yet again, that this author, Luke, who is also attributed with the Book of Acts,
00:52:30he's also making a clear and definite distinction between the Sabbath and the first day of the week.
00:52:39But he goes even farther in his description of the resurrection narrative.
00:52:44He says that these women who had the mission, or the intent, of embalming and spicing and perfuming Yeshua's body,
00:52:54they were going to do that, but then the Sabbath came up.
00:52:57And what does Luke say about these women?
00:53:01He says that they rested according to the command.
00:53:08So, if you're someone who says that the law has been done away with,
00:53:12that the Sabbath has been changed or done away with,
00:53:16exactly at which point did that occur?
00:53:20Because it's not here, because these women, as Luke says, rested according to the command.
00:53:27So, they were still under the impression that the Sabbath was still in effect,
00:53:31was still ongoing, and they rested according to the command for the Sabbath.
00:53:37And then once the Sabbath was over, then they came to the tomb to anoint Yeshua's body.
00:53:45Very, very powerful.
00:53:47All these authors know that the resurrection occurred on the first day of the week.
00:53:51Not Sunday, but on the first day of the week.
00:53:53And they make clear distinctions between the Sabbath and the first day of the week.
00:53:58These women knew that the Sabbath was still in effect,
00:54:01and they rested the way Yahweh told them to rest,
00:54:05put off this, you know,
00:54:08what can only guess was a very distressing time
00:54:11and very distressing job for them
00:54:14to go anoint and oil and perfume
00:54:17the deceased body of Yeshua.
00:54:21But they still put it off for another day
00:54:23because of the Sabbath.
00:54:25Even though, you know, the way things normally go,
00:54:28the longer you wait, the more rot and stink stuff creeps in.
00:54:32And they could have said,
00:54:34oh, well, we don't want it to stink so bad,
00:54:35so we're just going to go do it on the Sabbath.
00:54:37No.
00:54:38They rested on the seventh day,
00:54:40according to the commandment.
00:54:43So, yeah.
00:54:44They were still under the impression that the Sabbath had not been changed,
00:54:47just like Luke and Mark and Matthew.
00:54:50Luke's gospel is also important
00:54:54because of the broader context as well.
00:54:56We discussed earlier that the book of Acts
00:54:59is commonly attributed to Luke as being the author as well.
00:55:03But there are several observations to make here.
00:55:07Luke calls the seventh day the Sabbath,
00:55:10as does all the gospel authors.
00:55:13He connects it to the commandment,
00:55:15as we saw there when describing the ladies
00:55:17keeping the commandment for the Sabbath.
00:55:19And when that was a clear reference to the Sabbath commandment.
00:55:22After mentioning the Sabbath,
00:55:24Luke then speaks of the first day of the week,
00:55:25making a clear distinction,
00:55:26just like Mark and Matthew did.
00:55:29He does not identify the first day as the Sabbath.
00:55:33He mentions the Sabbath,
00:55:34and then he mentions the first day.
00:55:37Luke is most commonly attributed
00:55:39as being the author of Acts,
00:55:41and also one of Paul's traveling companions.
00:55:45So he got to know Paul very, very well.
00:55:49And if Paul had done something against the Torah,
00:55:52if Paul had tried to change one of the commands of Yahweh,
00:55:57probably definitely would have heard it from Luke,
00:56:01if not one of the other authors of the Brit Hadashah.
00:56:04So now, let's go ahead and look at John chapter 20, verse 1.
00:56:09And on day one of the week,
00:56:11Miriam from Magdala came early to the tomb
00:56:14while it was still dark
00:56:16and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
00:56:21Once again,
00:56:22John himself still doesn't equate
00:56:25the first day of the week with the Sabbath.
00:56:28And John has no problem using that word Sabbath.
00:56:30In fact, John himself is the one who states
00:56:34that Passover in John 19, 31,
00:56:37he states that Passover is a high day,
00:56:40a high Sabbath.
00:56:42But he doesn't use the word Sabbath here.
00:56:44He uses first day of the week.
00:56:47Again, making a clear distinction
00:56:48between the seventh day Sabbath and the first day.
00:56:52The facts of the Sabbath and Sunday in Scripture,
00:56:55we've already looked at the resurrection accounts
00:56:57from the four different Gospels.
00:57:00But the facts of the Sabbath and Sunday
00:57:03in the Scriptures are as such.
00:57:07There is no evidence whatsoever
00:57:09that anyone in Scripture
00:57:11regularly kept the first day
00:57:12as a remembrance of the resurrection,
00:57:14either on a weekly basis,
00:57:16a monthly basis,
00:57:17a yearly basis,
00:57:18or even as in a regular event.
00:57:22So no keeping the first day of the week
00:57:24as a memorial of the resurrection.
00:57:27There was no monthly commemoration
00:57:30of the resurrection.
00:57:31There was no yearly commemoration
00:57:34of the resurrection
00:57:35that we find in Scripture anywhere.
00:57:39Nowhere.
00:57:40Now, the resurrection is important
00:57:42because Paul himself tells us
00:57:43that we are not saved
00:57:46if Christ did not arise.
00:57:48That is important
00:57:49and that we will not be resurrected ourselves
00:57:52if Christ was not the first
00:57:55to be resurrected.
00:57:56The resurrection is important,
00:57:58but no one in Scripture
00:57:59ever commemorated the resurrection,
00:58:03either on a weekly, monthly, yearly,
00:58:05or irregular basis whatsoever.
00:58:09That's just the God-honest truth.
00:58:11Now, is it wrong
00:58:13to commemorate the resurrection?
00:58:16No.
00:58:17No.
00:58:18I don't see anything wrong
00:58:19with commemorating that.
00:58:21But it's not commanded
00:58:22and it's not exemplified
00:58:23or illustrated for us
00:58:24in Scripture.
00:58:25And that is the point.
00:58:29Yeshua's resurrection
00:58:30validated his identity
00:58:31as Messiah.
00:58:33It did not abolish the law.
00:58:35It did not abolish
00:58:36the Sabbath
00:58:37and it did not abolish
00:58:39the timing of his father's
00:58:40set-apart days,
00:58:42including the Moedim
00:58:43and the Sabbath.
00:58:46Jonah and the well.
00:58:47Esther and preparing
00:58:48for the king.
00:58:50You always,
00:58:50what do they have in common?
00:58:52Three days.
00:58:54It says that Esther
00:58:55fasted and prayed
00:58:56for three days.
00:58:57That Jonah was in the belly
00:58:58of the well
00:58:58for three days
00:59:00and three nights.
00:59:01None of these have to do
00:59:02with a certain day
00:59:03of the week.
00:59:04Go back and read
00:59:04those particular stories
00:59:06and there's nothing
00:59:07in there about
00:59:08making important
00:59:09a particular day
00:59:11of the week.
00:59:11It was all just
00:59:12three days.
00:59:13They all had to deal
00:59:14with a certain amount
00:59:15of time.
00:59:16In Yeshua's case,
00:59:17it was prophecy
00:59:19that had to be fulfilled
00:59:21in order to remain true
00:59:22according to the number
00:59:23of days,
00:59:24not the day
00:59:26of the week.
00:59:28Third day in Scripture.
00:59:29This is a theme
00:59:30that goes
00:59:31more than just
00:59:32Yeshua
00:59:33in the tomb.
00:59:34There are several
00:59:35other places
00:59:36in Scripture
00:59:37that utilizes
00:59:39this three days
00:59:40kind of theme.
00:59:41We have
00:59:42Genesis 22,
00:59:434 with Abraham.
00:59:45We have
00:59:45Exodus 19,
00:59:4610-16.
00:59:48Oh, here we go.
00:59:49Jonah 1, 17.
00:59:51There's never
00:59:52a prophecy
00:59:52about which day
00:59:53of the week
00:59:54that Yeshua
00:59:55would rise.
00:59:56It's only about
00:59:57how many days
00:59:58he would spend
00:59:59in the tomb
01:00:00before he rose.
01:00:01Yeshua says that
01:00:02himself,
01:00:03and I'll show you
01:00:03here in just a moment.
01:00:05There's never
01:00:06any importance
01:00:07placed on which
01:00:08day of the week
01:00:09just that it would
01:00:10be on the
01:00:11third day.
01:00:14Now, here's some
01:00:15really powerful stuff
01:00:16that I'm going to
01:00:17show you
01:00:17and offload onto you
01:00:19and there's a lot
01:00:20coming your way.
01:00:20I'm not going to
01:00:21read it out to you,
01:00:22so just write down
01:00:22the verses
01:00:23or go back
01:00:24and look at
01:00:25these slides yourself
01:00:26here in just a moment.
01:00:27I'm sorry,
01:00:29here tomorrow
01:00:30or something
01:00:30like that.
01:00:31But here,
01:00:33the third day
01:00:34is referenced
01:00:36by Yeshua,
01:00:38number one,
01:00:39as a sign
01:00:40of Jonah.
01:00:42In Jonah 1, 17,
01:00:44it says specifically
01:00:44that he was
01:00:46in the stomach
01:00:46of the great fish
01:00:48for three days
01:00:49and three nights.
01:00:50That's the sign
01:00:51of Jonah
01:00:51that Yeshua
01:00:53speaks about.
01:00:54And he specifically
01:00:55prophesies about this
01:00:56in Matthew
01:00:57chapter 12
01:00:58verse 40,
01:00:59Matthew chapter 16
01:01:00verse 4,
01:01:02Matthew,
01:01:03I'm sorry,
01:01:04Luke chapter 11
01:01:05verses 29
01:01:06through 30,
01:01:07three days
01:01:08and three nights
01:01:08as the sign
01:01:10of Jonah.
01:01:11Yeshua prophesies
01:01:12about his death
01:01:13and this includes
01:01:14not a day of the week
01:01:16but three days.
01:01:18The day of the week
01:01:19is irrelevant.
01:01:21It's the number
01:01:21of days between
01:01:22his death
01:01:22and his resurrection.
01:01:24That's what's
01:01:25always emphasized,
01:01:26the number of days.
01:01:27And he always
01:01:28uses three days
01:01:29or third days
01:01:29when he prophesies
01:01:30about his death
01:01:31in Matthew
01:01:32chapter 16
01:01:33verse 21,
01:01:34Matthew chapter 17
01:01:35verses 22
01:01:36through 23,
01:01:37Matthew chapter 20
01:01:38verses 18
01:01:38through 19,
01:01:40Mark chapter 8
01:01:41verses 31,
01:01:42Mark chapter 9
01:01:43verse 31,
01:01:45Mark chapter 10
01:01:46verse 34,
01:01:47Luke chapter 9
01:01:48verse 22,
01:01:49Luke chapter 18
01:01:49verse 33,
01:01:51John chapter 2
01:01:51verse 19.
01:01:53And that's just
01:01:54Yeshua talking
01:01:55about the time
01:01:57that he will be
01:01:59in the tomb
01:02:00between his death
01:02:01and his resurrection.
01:02:01It's always in
01:02:03three days
01:02:04or on the third
01:02:05day.
01:02:06It's always the
01:02:07number of days,
01:02:08not the particular
01:02:09day of the week.
01:02:10This goes on even
01:02:11after the resurrection
01:02:13by Paul,
01:02:15et cetera,
01:02:15et cetera.
01:02:16These post-resurrection
01:02:17witnesses
01:02:17that say the exact
01:02:18same thing
01:02:19in regards
01:02:20to the number
01:02:21of days,
01:02:22not the day
01:02:23of the week.
01:02:24Here we look
01:02:25in Luke chapter 24
01:02:26verses 6 through 7,
01:02:27the third day.
01:02:28Luke chapter 24
01:02:29verse 21,
01:02:30the third day.
01:02:31Luke chapter 24
01:02:32verses 45 through 46,
01:02:34the third day.
01:02:35Acts chapter 10
01:02:36verse 40,
01:02:37the third day.
01:02:381 Corinthians chapter 15
01:02:40verses 3 through 4,
01:02:42again,
01:02:42the third day.
01:02:44Never,
01:02:45not one single verse
01:02:47ever emphasizes
01:02:50that it's the day
01:02:51of the week
01:02:51that's important.
01:02:53No.
01:02:54They always emphasize
01:02:55the number
01:02:56of days
01:02:57between
01:02:58his death
01:02:59and his resurrection.
01:03:01That's what
01:03:02they always emphasize.
01:03:04When the apostles
01:03:05and early believers
01:03:06teach the resurrection
01:03:07of Yeshua
01:03:08in the rest
01:03:09of the scriptures,
01:03:10such as in Acts
01:03:11or the epistles,
01:03:12they never specified
01:03:13that Yeshua rose
01:03:15on the first day
01:03:16of the week.
01:03:17No.
01:03:17They always say
01:03:19that he arose
01:03:20three days
01:03:21after his death.
01:03:22That he arose
01:03:23on the third day.
01:03:26Never,
01:03:26not once,
01:03:27did they ever say
01:03:28that he rose
01:03:29on the first day
01:03:30of the week.
01:03:31You only find that
01:03:32in the gospel accounts
01:03:35describing
01:03:35the resurrection.
01:03:37That's it.
01:03:39So there are some problems
01:03:41with trying to use
01:03:42the resurrection
01:03:43to justify Sunday
01:03:44as the Sabbath.
01:03:46And the problems
01:03:48with the argument
01:03:48or this type
01:03:49of reasoning
01:03:50goes as such.
01:03:52No passage
01:03:52explicitly says
01:03:53the Sabbath
01:03:54was changed.
01:03:56You do not
01:03:57ever find that
01:03:58in scripture
01:03:59stated explicitly.
01:04:00It's only
01:04:01read back
01:04:02into scripture.
01:04:04The resurrection
01:04:04narratives continue
01:04:05to distinguish
01:04:06the Sabbath day
01:04:07from the first day
01:04:07and we saw that
01:04:08with our own
01:04:09highs,
01:04:09actually.
01:04:09Luke chapter 23
01:04:11verse 56
01:04:12still calls
01:04:13the seventh day
01:04:14the Sabbath
01:04:15according to
01:04:15the commandment.
01:04:17The apostles
01:04:17nor anyone else
01:04:18in scripture
01:04:19ever record a command
01:04:20to keep Sunday
01:04:21as the Sabbath.
01:04:23The argument
01:04:23relies largely
01:04:24on theological
01:04:25inference
01:04:26rather than
01:04:27explicit
01:04:28biblical legislation.
01:04:31So,
01:04:32if the resurrection
01:04:33has nothing to do
01:04:34about the Sabbath
01:04:35or a change
01:04:36in the Sabbath,
01:04:36does it have to do
01:04:37with anything at all?
01:04:38Well,
01:04:39actually,
01:04:39yes it does
01:04:40and there is a
01:04:41proper and correct
01:04:42connection to make
01:04:43here with the
01:04:44resurrection
01:04:45and it has nothing
01:04:45to do with the
01:04:46Sabbath.
01:04:47In fact,
01:04:47it has to do
01:04:48with the day
01:04:49of first fruits.
01:04:50Perhaps the strongest
01:04:51biblical connection
01:04:52with the resurrection
01:04:54and Sunday
01:04:55is not found
01:04:56in the fourth
01:04:56commandment
01:04:57but in the
01:04:57feast of first fruits.
01:04:59The text does not
01:05:01exegetically teach
01:05:02first fruits
01:05:03replaces the Sabbath
01:05:04or that Sunday
01:05:05became the fourth
01:05:06commandment
01:05:07or that weekly
01:05:08Sabbath observance
01:05:09moves to Sunday.
01:05:10Instead,
01:05:11the resurrection
01:05:11fulfills a festival,
01:05:13a moedim,
01:05:15that already points
01:05:16toward Messiah.
01:05:18Confusing the
01:05:19feast of first fruits
01:05:20with the weekly
01:05:20Sabbath mixes
01:05:22two separate
01:05:23and distinct
01:05:24moedim.
01:05:26The resurrection
01:05:27argument should be
01:05:28understood primarily
01:05:29as a theological
01:05:30inference,
01:05:31an exercise in
01:05:32eisegesis and
01:05:33confirmation bias
01:05:34rather than
01:05:35an explicit
01:05:36biblical
01:05:37declaration.
01:05:40And you should
01:05:40be able to see
01:05:41that by now.
01:05:41Do your own
01:05:42research,
01:05:42but again,
01:05:43you'll never
01:05:43find something
01:05:44in Scripture
01:05:45that says
01:05:46let go of
01:05:47the seventh
01:05:47day and
01:05:48observe the
01:05:48first day
01:05:49instead.
01:05:50So,
01:05:50again,
01:05:51let's go ahead
01:05:51and move on
01:05:52to another
01:05:53argument that's
01:05:53commonly put
01:05:54forth for
01:05:55Sunday as
01:05:56the Sabbath
01:05:57and this is
01:05:571 Corinthians
01:05:58chapter 16
01:05:59verse 2.
01:06:01And the passage
01:06:02goes as
01:06:02such.
01:06:03Every day
01:06:04one of the
01:06:05week let
01:06:05each one
01:06:06of you set
01:06:07aside storing
01:06:07up whatever
01:06:08he has
01:06:08prospered so
01:06:09that there
01:06:10are no
01:06:10collections
01:06:10when I
01:06:11come.
01:06:12This is
01:06:13commonly put
01:06:14forth as
01:06:15evidence for
01:06:15a Sunday
01:06:16Sabbath because
01:06:17they say
01:06:18that,
01:06:18okay,
01:06:19it references
01:06:19the first
01:06:20day of the
01:06:20week,
01:06:21there is
01:06:21Christian
01:06:21activity,
01:06:22there is
01:06:22financial
01:06:23practice,
01:06:24and there's
01:06:24apostolic
01:06:25instruction.
01:06:25This must
01:06:26be a church
01:06:28tithe that is
01:06:29being taken
01:06:29up like we
01:06:30know of
01:06:31today.
01:06:32But that's
01:06:33anachronistic
01:06:34reasoning and
01:06:35it's false.
01:06:36What Paul is
01:06:37describing here,
01:06:38think to
01:06:39yourself,
01:06:39is it a
01:06:40weekly
01:06:41gathering,
01:06:41a weekly
01:06:42worship
01:06:42gathering,
01:06:43is it a
01:06:44private
01:06:44household
01:06:44practice,
01:06:45is it a
01:06:45preparation
01:06:46for a
01:06:46future
01:06:46collection,
01:06:47is it a
01:06:48replacement
01:06:48of the
01:06:48Sabbath,
01:06:49or some
01:06:50combination
01:06:50or something
01:06:51completely
01:06:51different?
01:06:53Well,
01:06:54like we
01:06:55told you
01:06:55at the
01:06:56beginning,
01:06:57context
01:06:58illuminates
01:06:59a lot of
01:06:59these passages
01:07:00when you
01:07:01take things
01:07:01into greater
01:07:02context.
01:07:02So let's
01:07:03do that.
01:07:03Let's look
01:07:04at 1 Corinthians
01:07:05chapter 16
01:07:06verses 1
01:07:07through 3.
01:07:09And concerning
01:07:10the collections
01:07:11for the
01:07:11set-apart ones,
01:07:12you are to
01:07:12do as I
01:07:13gave orders
01:07:13to the
01:07:14assemblies
01:07:14of Galatia.
01:07:15Every day
01:07:16one of the
01:07:16week,
01:07:17let each
01:07:17one of you
01:07:18set aside,
01:07:19storing up
01:07:19whatever he
01:07:20has prospered,
01:07:21so that there
01:07:21are no
01:07:22collections
01:07:22when I
01:07:23come.
01:07:23And when
01:07:24I come,
01:07:24whomever you
01:07:25approve by
01:07:26your letters,
01:07:26I shall send
01:07:27to bear your
01:07:28gift to
01:07:29Yerushalayim.
01:07:31Okay,
01:07:32so does that
01:07:32make any
01:07:33difference to
01:07:34understanding
01:07:35verse 2?
01:07:37Well,
01:07:37hopefully it
01:07:37should.
01:07:38Number one,
01:07:39it says they
01:07:39are taking a
01:07:40collection for
01:07:41these saints,
01:07:42a collection for
01:07:43these set-apart
01:07:44ones.
01:07:45It's not a
01:07:46weekly tithe like
01:07:47we're used to
01:07:48now.
01:07:48This is a
01:07:49special one-time
01:07:51thing that's,
01:07:52I'm getting ahead
01:07:53of myself,
01:07:53but it's actually
01:07:54going to the
01:07:54needy in
01:07:55Jerusalem.
01:07:56And it also
01:07:57says each
01:07:58one of you
01:07:59is not a
01:08:01collective
01:08:01public assembly
01:08:03type of
01:08:04language here,
01:08:04it's a
01:08:05personal private
01:08:05kind of
01:08:06language here.
01:08:07Each one
01:08:08of you
01:08:09set aside.
01:08:10So keep
01:08:11that in mind
01:08:11as we go
01:08:12further.
01:08:13But regarding
01:08:14this collection
01:08:15for the
01:08:15set-apart
01:08:16ones,
01:08:17let's look at
01:08:17that real
01:08:17quick.
01:08:18This collection
01:08:19that is
01:08:19actually mentioned
01:08:20here in
01:08:22chapter 16
01:08:23was not an
01:08:24ordinary offer,
01:08:25not a weekly
01:08:26every week
01:08:27kind of
01:08:28church tithe
01:08:29that we
01:08:29think of
01:08:30nowadays in
01:08:31modern
01:08:31churchianity
01:08:32kind of
01:08:33settings.
01:08:34Yeah,
01:08:34this was not
01:08:35an ordinary
01:08:35offering.
01:08:35It's not a
01:08:36weekly tithe
01:08:37like we're
01:08:37used to
01:08:38in modern
01:08:38churchianity
01:08:39settings.
01:08:39This was
01:08:39a special
01:08:42one-off
01:08:43kind of
01:08:43collection
01:08:44that Paul
01:08:45was intending
01:08:45to do
01:08:46here.
01:08:46And it
01:08:46was not
01:08:47going to
01:08:47their local
01:08:48church or
01:08:48their local
01:08:49assembly,
01:08:49their local
01:08:49gathering.
01:08:50Instead,
01:08:51it was going
01:08:51from Corinth
01:08:52to Jerusalem.
01:08:55So that
01:08:55makes it
01:08:56different as
01:08:56well.
01:08:56This is not
01:08:57a church
01:08:58tithe that
01:08:58we're talking
01:08:58about here.
01:08:59It was a
01:09:00special collection
01:09:00for the
01:09:01believers in
01:09:02Jerusalem because
01:09:03at this time,
01:09:04as far as I
01:09:04can find out,
01:09:05there was a
01:09:06famine going
01:09:07on in
01:09:08Jerusalem.
01:09:09So they
01:09:10were taking
01:09:10up a
01:09:10collection to
01:09:12send this
01:09:12money down
01:09:13to Jerusalem
01:09:14to buy
01:09:14food for
01:09:15the brothers
01:09:16and sisters
01:09:16in the
01:09:17faith to
01:09:18help them
01:09:18out.
01:09:19We find
01:09:20in Romans
01:09:20chapter 15
01:09:21verses 25
01:09:22through 27.
01:09:24But now I
01:09:24am going
01:09:25to
01:09:25Jerusalem
01:09:25to serve
01:09:26the set
01:09:27apart
01:09:27ones,
01:09:27for it
01:09:28pleased
01:09:28those
01:09:29from
01:09:29Macedonia
01:09:30and
01:09:30Achaia
01:09:30to make
01:09:31some
01:09:31contribution
01:09:32for the
01:09:32poor
01:09:32among the
01:09:33set
01:09:33apart
01:09:33ones
01:09:34who are
01:09:34in
01:09:35Jerusalem.
01:09:35For they
01:09:36were pleased
01:09:37and they
01:09:37are their
01:09:38debtors.
01:09:39For if the
01:09:39nations have
01:09:40shared in
01:09:40their spiritual
01:09:41matters,
01:09:41their duty
01:09:42is also to
01:09:43serve them
01:09:43in material
01:09:44matters.
01:09:46So what's
01:09:47going on
01:09:47here is that
01:09:48these believers
01:09:49in this
01:09:49congregation
01:09:50in Corinth
01:09:51and also
01:09:52other places
01:09:52that Paul had
01:09:53established were
01:09:54taking up a
01:09:55special donation,
01:09:56a special
01:09:56collection to
01:09:57help feed the
01:09:58poor down in
01:09:59Jerusalem who
01:10:00were going
01:10:00through a
01:10:01famine.
01:10:01And this was
01:10:02very important
01:10:03not only because
01:10:03we should help
01:10:04our brothers and
01:10:05sisters out,
01:10:05but also think
01:10:07about this time
01:10:07in history as
01:10:08well.
01:10:09They were just
01:10:10coming into the
01:10:11idea of not
01:10:12only having
01:10:13Judeans in the
01:10:14faith, but also
01:10:15those who were
01:10:16not of ethnic
01:10:18descent from
01:10:19Israel, like the
01:10:20Judeans were.
01:10:21the Gentiles who
01:10:22were coming
01:10:22into the
01:10:23faith.
01:10:23So these
01:10:24Gentiles in
01:10:25Corinth were
01:10:26being asked to
01:10:27donate money to
01:10:28help feed the
01:10:29Judeans in
01:10:29Jerusalem.
01:10:32And how big
01:10:33of an impact
01:10:33would that have
01:10:34made back
01:10:34then if you're
01:10:36a Jew or
01:10:37Judean and
01:10:38you're seeing
01:10:39this money come
01:10:40in from
01:10:40Gentiles or
01:10:41former Gentiles
01:10:42to help feed
01:10:43you as a
01:10:44brotherly act
01:10:45of love,
01:10:46how would that
01:10:47change your
01:10:47opinion towards
01:10:48Gentiles coming
01:10:49into the
01:10:50faith?
01:10:51I mean, think
01:10:51about that.
01:10:52This is more
01:10:52than just
01:10:53helping people
01:10:54who need
01:10:54help.
01:10:55I mean, that's
01:10:55important as
01:10:55well, but it's
01:10:56also starting to
01:10:58bridge that
01:10:58cultural divide
01:10:59between those
01:11:00who were formerly
01:11:01Gentiles and
01:11:02those who were
01:11:02formerly of the
01:11:04Jewish religion.
01:11:06There's multiple
01:11:07aspects going on
01:11:08here, but that's
01:11:09what the offering
01:11:10is for.
01:11:11It's not a
01:11:11weekly church
01:11:12tithe that we
01:11:13think of
01:11:14nowadays.
01:11:15This passage
01:11:16in 1 Corinthians
01:11:1716.2, like
01:11:18I mentioned
01:11:19earlier, is
01:11:20not a
01:11:22public matter.
01:11:22It's actually
01:11:23a private matter
01:11:24when you get
01:11:24into the weeds
01:11:25on the Greek
01:11:27language or the
01:11:28Greek words and
01:11:29the grammar that's
01:11:29going on here.
01:11:31Again, it says
01:11:32here in 16.2,
01:11:34every day one of
01:11:34the week, let
01:11:35each one of you
01:11:36set aside,
01:11:36storing up what
01:11:37he has prospered,
01:11:38whatever he has
01:11:39prospered, so that
01:11:40there are no
01:11:40collections when I
01:11:42come.
01:11:42This phrase right
01:11:43here, let each
01:11:44one of you set
01:11:45aside, when you
01:11:46look at it in the
01:11:46Greek, actually
01:11:47indicates something
01:11:48that is personal
01:11:49and private at
01:11:51home and not a
01:11:52public congregational
01:11:54setting.
01:11:56This gets
01:11:57really, really
01:11:58geeky here, but
01:12:00you go look at
01:12:01this for yourself
01:12:02in the Blue
01:12:03Letter Bible, and
01:12:04it will show you
01:12:05each of the
01:12:06tenses, and it'll
01:12:07actually describe it
01:12:07for you and
01:12:08everything else, and
01:12:08that's what I
01:12:09copied for your
01:12:12benefit.
01:12:15I put it up
01:12:16here, this
01:12:16straight copy
01:12:17from Blue
01:12:18Letter Bible, but
01:12:19let each one of
01:12:20you set aside
01:12:21potter, which is
01:12:22a preposition,
01:12:23then hoto, which
01:12:24is a reflexive
01:12:25pronoun of the
01:12:26third-person
01:12:27dative singular
01:12:30masculine.
01:12:31Don't worry about
01:12:32the rest of that
01:12:32stuff, but the
01:12:32singular part is
01:12:34definitely important
01:12:35here.
01:12:36Then you got
01:12:36dethaming, which
01:12:38is a verb, which
01:12:39is also a present
01:12:40active imperative
01:12:41third-person singular
01:12:43verb.
01:12:45So basically what
01:12:46Paul is saying
01:12:47here is that let
01:12:47each one of you
01:12:48by himself in
01:12:50his own house
01:12:50set aside money
01:12:52for this
01:12:53collection.
01:12:54He is not
01:12:55saying pass
01:12:56around the
01:12:56offering plate at
01:12:57church every
01:12:57Sunday.
01:12:59That's not it.
01:13:01This is a
01:13:02private, personal
01:13:03matter, not a
01:13:06public assembly
01:13:07kind of context.
01:13:10Hopefully that
01:13:11clears it up a
01:13:11little bit more.
01:13:12Again, go and
01:13:12do your own
01:13:13research, study
01:13:13further into
01:13:14this, go into
01:13:15the blue-letter
01:13:16Bible here, go
01:13:16into your
01:13:17lexicons and
01:13:17your dictionaries
01:13:18and search this
01:13:18out for yourself.
01:13:20This is not a
01:13:21collective kind of
01:13:22context, this is a
01:13:23personal kind of
01:13:24context, and it's
01:13:25only for a
01:13:27temporal collection,
01:13:28not an every day
01:13:31or every week
01:13:32ongoing kind of
01:13:33thing.
01:13:38Here is some
01:13:39more on why
01:13:40this passage and
01:13:41this reasoning
01:13:42from 16.2 is
01:13:44wrong or
01:13:45incorrect.
01:13:47Number one, the
01:13:48proponents of
01:13:49Sunday as
01:13:49Sabbath, those
01:13:50who think that
01:13:51the Sabbath has
01:13:52been changed to
01:13:53Sunday, they put
01:13:54forth their
01:13:55reasoning sort
01:13:56of in this kind
01:13:57of fashion.
01:13:58They say that
01:13:59Paul mentions the
01:14:00first day, Sunday,
01:14:02right?
01:14:03He discusses
01:14:03giving, wink
01:14:05wink, giving
01:14:06occurs in worship
01:14:07every Sunday at
01:14:08my church, right?
01:14:10So it only makes
01:14:11sense that therefore
01:14:11Paul was referencing
01:14:13Sunday as the new
01:14:14worship day, the
01:14:15new Sabbath.
01:14:17There's all kinds
01:14:19of things wrong
01:14:19with that.
01:14:20Number one, it's
01:14:20anachronistic to
01:14:21begin with, because
01:14:22just because you do
01:14:24something now doesn't
01:14:24mean that's how they
01:14:25did it back then.
01:14:26You have to look
01:14:27into how things were
01:14:28done back then, how
01:14:30it comes out of
01:14:30scripture, and not
01:14:31read into it.
01:14:34So not only is it
01:14:35anachronistic, but
01:14:36it's also wrong on
01:14:38other things as
01:14:39well.
01:14:39Number one, it
01:14:40does not say this
01:14:41is a forever kind
01:14:43of thing.
01:14:44It's only going to
01:14:44be temporary,
01:14:45actually.
01:14:47And number two,
01:14:48it's not the day
01:14:49of worship.
01:14:50The Sabbath is not
01:14:51the day of worship.
01:14:51As we looked at
01:14:52earlier, every day
01:14:53should be the day
01:14:54of worship.
01:14:55The Sabbath is the
01:14:56day of rest.
01:14:57And there is
01:14:58nothing in 1 Corinthians
01:14:5916, 2, about
01:15:01rest, which would
01:15:02definitely distinguish
01:15:04it in some sort of
01:15:05Sabbath context.
01:15:08Again, this, thinking
01:15:10about how you do it
01:15:11now at your particular
01:15:12church on Sunday, and
01:15:13then reading that back
01:15:14in, that is anachronistic,
01:15:16and that actually
01:15:17contributes to it
01:15:18being a type of
01:15:20circular reasoning as
01:15:22well.
01:15:22So it's faulty on
01:15:24those things also.
01:15:25So, okay, I got
01:15:28ahead of myself, but
01:15:28let's read this real
01:15:29quick.
01:15:29The text does not
01:15:30say believers were
01:15:31gathered.
01:15:31It does not say
01:15:32that.
01:15:33It references a
01:15:34private, personal
01:15:35situation, not a
01:15:37collective, congregational
01:15:39kind of setting.
01:15:40It does not say that
01:15:41worship occurred here
01:15:42in 1 Corinthians 16,
01:15:44not verse 2, not
01:15:45verses 1 or 3
01:15:46either.
01:15:46We looked at it in
01:15:47context.
01:15:48It does not say a
01:15:49teaching or a sermon
01:15:50occurred here in
01:15:5216, 2.
01:15:52It does not say
01:15:54that communion
01:15:55occurred either in
01:15:57this passage.
01:15:59So again, saying
01:16:00that this passage
01:16:02points to Sunday
01:16:03as being the new
01:16:03Sabbath, yeah, it
01:16:06does not do that.
01:16:07Not at all.
01:16:08It's not even
01:16:09describing the
01:16:10believers as having
01:16:12belief that Sunday
01:16:14is the Sabbath.
01:16:16Nothing like that.
01:16:17So, like the other
01:16:18passages we looked
01:16:19at, 1 Corinthians
01:16:2016, 2, does not
01:16:22indicate a change
01:16:24in the day of
01:16:24Sabbath.
01:16:25So that's the
01:16:26passages I thought
01:16:27were the top ones
01:16:29anyways, at least
01:16:29in my opinion.
01:16:30We'll get into
01:16:31some more next
01:16:31time.
01:16:32But just my
01:16:33closing thoughts
01:16:34for this particular
01:16:35episode.
01:16:36Number one, the
01:16:38silence on the
01:16:39change in the
01:16:40Sabbath in the
01:16:42scriptures is
01:16:43deafening.
01:16:45Silence can be
01:16:46deafening.
01:16:46This is one of
01:16:47those instances.
01:16:48Given the absence
01:16:50of any such
01:16:50statement on the
01:16:51Sabbath, such as
01:16:53the first day
01:16:54Sabbath, you
01:16:55have heard it
01:16:55that said, thou
01:16:56shall keep the
01:16:56seventh day of
01:16:57Sabbath, but I
01:16:57tell you to
01:16:58keep the first
01:16:58day, or no
01:17:00longer keep the
01:17:01seventh day, but
01:17:02rather keepest
01:17:02thou the first
01:17:03day, or Yeshua
01:17:05overcame the
01:17:05death and the
01:17:06grave and also
01:17:07overcame the
01:17:08command of the
01:17:08Sabbath, or you
01:17:11don't find this
01:17:11either.
01:17:12You don't find
01:17:12this, quote, the
01:17:13first day is now
01:17:14the Sabbath, or
01:17:15remember the first
01:17:16day to keep it
01:17:17holy, or the
01:17:18fourth commandment
01:17:18has been transferred
01:17:19to Sunday, or
01:17:21Sunday shall now
01:17:22be the sign
01:17:22between God
01:17:23and thee, or
01:17:24because Christ
01:17:25rose on the
01:17:25first day, believers
01:17:26must now keep
01:17:27Sunday as the
01:17:27Sabbath.
01:17:28You don't find
01:17:29any of those
01:17:30statements in
01:17:31Scripture, not
01:17:33directly or even
01:17:33indirectly.
01:17:35None of that.
01:17:37When it comes to
01:17:38a change in the
01:17:39day of the week
01:17:40for the Sabbath, the
01:17:41silence is
01:17:43absolutely
01:17:45deafening.
01:17:45any passage put
01:17:47forth as
01:17:48evidence for a
01:17:49change in
01:17:49Sabbath requires
01:17:50one to really
01:17:51eisegete a
01:17:52command for
01:17:53Sunday observance,
01:17:54in other words,
01:17:55to read it back
01:17:56into the passage
01:17:57that you are
01:17:58putting forth.
01:17:59Because you
01:18:00cannot draw that
01:18:01kind of command
01:18:03or inference out
01:18:04of Scripture,
01:18:05you can only read
01:18:07it back into
01:18:07Scripture.
01:18:09Such a
01:18:09proclamation of a
01:18:10change in the
01:18:11day for the
01:18:12Sabbath would have
01:18:13been extraordinarily
01:18:14controversial in
01:18:16the Jewish world
01:18:17and would likely
01:18:17have generated
01:18:18major recorded
01:18:20disputes.
01:18:20The New Testament
01:18:21records many
01:18:22controversies, but
01:18:23no explicit
01:18:24controversy over an
01:18:25apostolic announcement
01:18:26changing the
01:18:27Sabbath day.
01:18:28Also, keep this
01:18:30in mind, too.
01:18:30Think about this.
01:18:31When the Pharisees
01:18:33and the Sadducees
01:18:34were seeking a
01:18:35way to, or a
01:18:36reason, to kill
01:18:38Yeshua, if
01:18:40Yeshua had
01:18:41actually broken
01:18:43observance of the
01:18:44Sabbath, or if
01:18:46Yeshua had
01:18:46actually said that
01:18:47the Sabbath had
01:18:48been changed, that
01:18:49would have been
01:18:50violation of the
01:18:51Torah, and when
01:18:53it comes to the
01:18:53Sabbath day, what
01:18:54is the penalty for
01:18:56breaking the
01:18:57Sabbath?
01:18:57It's death.
01:18:59So, if Yeshua had
01:19:00actually changed the
01:19:02Sabbath day, or
01:19:02broken the Sabbath
01:19:03in his observance,
01:19:05they would have
01:19:09foolproof, a
01:19:10foolproof reason to
01:19:11kill him, but
01:19:13they never bring
01:19:14that as a charge
01:19:15against Yeshua.
01:19:17So, keep that in
01:19:18your thoughts as
01:19:19well when you go
01:19:20through this
01:19:21particular subject
01:19:21of the Sabbath and
01:19:23whether or not
01:19:24Scripture has
01:19:25changed it to
01:19:26Sunday.
01:19:28Considering how
01:19:29controversial such
01:19:30a declaration about
01:19:31the change in the
01:19:32day of the week for
01:19:32the Sabbath would
01:19:33have been, its
01:19:34absence, its
01:19:35silence, is
01:19:37definitely noteworthy.
01:19:39Silence alone cannot
01:19:41prove a doctrine
01:19:42false.
01:19:42This is called the
01:19:43argument from
01:19:43silence, but
01:19:44sometimes it can
01:19:46illuminate stuff and
01:19:47can be beneficial and
01:19:49used in a positive
01:19:50light.
01:19:50When silence is
01:19:52there where one
01:19:52expects repeated
01:19:53explanation, it
01:19:55does deserve
01:19:56consideration.
01:19:57If such a
01:19:58doctrinal transition,
01:20:00such as the
01:20:02Sabbath from the
01:20:03seventh day to the
01:20:03first day, if that
01:20:05had actually occurred,
01:20:06one would expect
01:20:07Yeshua or the
01:20:08apostles to
01:20:09explain it
01:20:10carefully and
01:20:11in no short
01:20:12order.
01:20:13The apostles, as
01:20:14we see in the
01:20:15scriptures, they
01:20:16repeatedly proclaim
01:20:17the death of
01:20:18Christ, the
01:20:19resurrection, the
01:20:20repentance for
01:20:21sins, the
01:20:22forgiveness of
01:20:22sins, the
01:20:23faith, the
01:20:24coming kingdom
01:20:25even.
01:20:26Never a change
01:20:27in the Sabbath
01:20:28though.
01:20:28Their sermons
01:20:29consistently emphasize
01:20:30that Yeshua,
01:20:32salvation, repentance,
01:20:34the gospel, etc.,
01:20:35but rather than a
01:20:37change in sacred
01:20:38time.
01:20:38They never say
01:20:39that the Sabbath
01:20:40has been changed.
01:20:41They never say
01:20:43that the Passover
01:20:44has been changed
01:20:45or Sukkot or
01:20:46etc., etc.
01:20:47They don't state
01:20:48anything about a
01:20:49change in the
01:20:50times for the
01:20:51Moedim, including
01:20:52the Sabbath.
01:20:54That's not their
01:20:54mission.
01:20:55That's not what
01:20:55they preach.
01:20:56They preach the
01:20:57death of Christ.
01:20:57They preach the
01:20:58resurrection.
01:20:58They preach the
01:20:59gospel, etc., etc.
01:21:02Never a change
01:21:03in the Sabbath
01:21:04though.
01:21:05In fact, one
01:21:06important distinction
01:21:07to make too is
01:21:08that when we
01:21:09looked at the
01:21:10early church
01:21:10history, the
01:21:11first 500 years
01:21:12or so, we
01:21:13saw that one
01:21:13of the reasons
01:21:13that the
01:21:14early believers
01:21:16tried to make
01:21:17a change in
01:21:18the Sabbath or
01:21:19try to rationalize
01:21:20a change in the
01:21:21Sabbath was
01:21:22because they
01:21:22said the
01:21:23Sabbath was
01:21:24the Jewish
01:21:26Sabbath.
01:21:27Remember,
01:21:27Justin Martyrs
01:21:28said that the
01:21:29Sabbath was
01:21:29instituted as a
01:21:30punishment for
01:21:32the Jews'
01:21:32transgressions.
01:21:33And even
01:21:34nowadays, that
01:21:36same false
01:21:38thinking about
01:21:39how the
01:21:40Sabbath is the
01:21:40Jewish Sabbath
01:21:42continues.
01:21:43That's not what
01:21:44Scripture says.
01:21:45Scripture does not
01:21:46call the
01:21:46Sabbath a
01:21:47Jewish Sabbath.
01:21:49The appointed
01:21:50times, including
01:21:51the Sabbath of
01:21:53Yahweh, are
01:21:54listed in
01:21:55Leviticus 23.
01:21:56You can go look
01:21:56at this for
01:21:57yourself.
01:21:58These were
01:21:59not merely
01:21:59cultural
01:22:00celebrations that
01:22:01were assigned to
01:22:02one specific
01:22:03tribe that
01:22:04descended from
01:22:04Judah.
01:22:05Wink, wink.
01:22:07These were
01:22:08presented as
01:22:09divine appointments
01:22:10from Yahweh
01:22:11himself.
01:22:12They're called
01:22:12Yahweh's
01:22:14Moedim, Yahweh's
01:22:15Passover, Yahweh's
01:22:16Sabbath, etc., etc.
01:22:18Leviticus 23.2
01:22:19states as such,
01:22:21The Feast, or
01:22:22Moedim, of
01:22:23the Lord, the
01:22:24Feast of
01:22:25Yahweh, which
01:22:26you shall
01:22:26proclaim to
01:22:27be holy
01:22:28convocations.
01:22:28These are
01:22:30my
01:22:32appointed
01:22:32feasts.
01:22:34Not the
01:22:35Jewish
01:22:35Feast.
01:22:36These are
01:22:37Yahweh's
01:22:38appointed
01:22:39feasts.
01:22:39It then
01:22:40goes on to
01:22:41list these
01:22:42particular and
01:22:43specific
01:22:44Moedim,
01:22:45including the
01:22:46Sabbath.
01:22:46The list
01:22:47goes as
01:22:47such in
01:22:48Leviticus 23.
01:22:49The
01:22:50Sabbath,
01:22:50number one.
01:22:52Passover,
01:22:53Unleavened
01:22:54Bread,
01:22:54Firstfruits,
01:22:55Weeks, or
01:22:55Shavuot,
01:22:57Trumpets, or
01:22:57Yom Teruah,
01:22:59Atonement, or
01:22:59Yom Kippurim,
01:23:01and Tabernacles,
01:23:02or Sukkot.
01:23:03These are
01:23:04listed as
01:23:05Yahweh's
01:23:06Feast, not
01:23:08Jewish Feast.
01:23:09That's
01:23:10scriptural.
01:23:12You can't
01:23:13get around
01:23:13that.
01:23:14So now,
01:23:14in summary,
01:23:18Acts 20,
01:23:19verse 7,
01:23:20does not
01:23:21describe a
01:23:22change in
01:23:23the day for
01:23:23the Sabbath.
01:23:24We looked at
01:23:25the ins and
01:23:25outs of that
01:23:26in great
01:23:27detail,
01:23:27and there's a
01:23:28lot more
01:23:28detail in the
01:23:29information we
01:23:30provide for you
01:23:31on the article
01:23:32post as well.
01:23:33Acts 20,
01:23:34verse 7,
01:23:36focuses on
01:23:36apostolic
01:23:37authority and
01:23:39miracles,
01:23:39and is
01:23:40descriptive,
01:23:41not
01:23:42prescriptive.
01:23:43There is
01:23:44nothing in
01:23:45Acts 20,
01:23:45verse 7,
01:23:46about rest
01:23:46or worship.
01:23:48Or,
01:23:49let me go
01:23:49one step
01:23:49further,
01:23:50I didn't
01:23:50mention this
01:23:50earlier,
01:23:51but Acts 20,
01:23:52verse 7,
01:23:53does not
01:23:54mention anything
01:23:55about that
01:23:56being a
01:23:56regular,
01:23:57weekly,
01:23:58daily,
01:23:59monthly,
01:23:59yearly,
01:24:00any kind
01:24:00of regular
01:24:01meeting.
01:24:02It was just
01:24:02a one-off
01:24:03thing,
01:24:04say goodbye
01:24:05to Paul
01:24:05before he
01:24:06left
01:24:06Troas.
01:24:09Both Luke
01:24:10and Paul
01:24:11emphasized their
01:24:12obedience to
01:24:12the Torah,
01:24:13including the
01:24:14Sabbath.
01:24:14We saw those
01:24:15verses there,
01:24:16too.
01:24:16The resurrection
01:24:17is no
01:24:18justification
01:24:18for a
01:24:19change in
01:24:20the day
01:24:20of the
01:24:21Sabbath.
01:24:22The apostles,
01:24:23disciples,
01:24:23nor the
01:24:24believers in
01:24:25the Brit Hadashah
01:24:26taught that the
01:24:27Sabbath had
01:24:27changed to the
01:24:28first day due
01:24:29to the
01:24:29resurrection.
01:24:31The resurrection
01:24:31is always
01:24:32emphasized around
01:24:33three days,
01:24:35never to a
01:24:36specific day
01:24:37of the week.
01:24:38The resurrection
01:24:39is connected to
01:24:40the Feast of
01:24:40Firstfruits,
01:24:41not the
01:24:42Sabbath.
01:24:431 Corinthians
01:24:4416, 2
01:24:45concerns a
01:24:46private,
01:24:47personal
01:24:47setting aside
01:24:50of funds
01:24:50for the
01:24:50needy,
01:24:51not a
01:24:52change in
01:24:53the
01:24:53Sabbath.
01:24:54To state
01:24:55that the
01:24:55Sabbath has
01:24:56changed to
01:24:56Sunday or
01:24:57that the
01:24:57Sabbath is
01:24:58done away
01:24:58with,
01:24:58violates
01:24:59several
01:25:01hermeneutical
01:25:01principles.
01:25:03To state
01:25:04that the
01:25:04Sabbath has
01:25:04changed to
01:25:05Sunday or
01:25:05that the
01:25:06Sabbath is
01:25:06done away
01:25:06with,
01:25:07contradicts
01:25:08sola scriptura
01:25:09as well.
01:25:10To state
01:25:10that the
01:25:11Sabbath has
01:25:11changed to
01:25:12Sunday or
01:25:12that the
01:25:13Sabbath is
01:25:13done away
01:25:14with is
01:25:14an exercise
01:25:15in eisegesis
01:25:16and is
01:25:17fallacious.
01:25:19Context
01:25:19generally
01:25:20illuminates the
01:25:21fallacy that
01:25:22the Sabbath has
01:25:22changed to
01:25:23Sunday or
01:25:24that the
01:25:24Sabbath is
01:25:25done away
01:25:25with when
01:25:26examining the
01:25:27passages that
01:25:28are used.
01:25:30The
01:25:30Sabbath has
01:25:31not been
01:25:32done away
01:25:32with and
01:25:33the Sabbath
01:25:33has not
01:25:34changed to
01:25:36Sunday.
01:25:37And that's
01:25:38just the
01:25:38God honest
01:25:39truth.
01:25:40So thank you
01:25:41for joining
01:25:41us for
01:25:42this episode
01:25:43in our
01:25:43Sabbath
01:25:43series examining
01:25:44just a few
01:25:45of the
01:25:46passages that
01:25:47are put
01:25:47forth to
01:25:49put forth
01:25:50this idea
01:25:51that the
01:25:51Sabbath has
01:25:52changed to
01:25:52Sunday.
01:25:53We're going
01:25:53to be
01:25:53examining
01:25:53more in
01:25:54our next
01:25:55episode,
01:25:56but these
01:25:56are the
01:25:57top ones
01:25:57that I
01:25:58thought were
01:25:59either the
01:25:59most convincing
01:26:01to the
01:26:01greatest majority
01:26:02of people
01:26:03or is most
01:26:03commonly used
01:26:04or something
01:26:04like that.
01:26:05But we'll be
01:26:06examining some
01:26:07more coming up

01:26:08next episode.
