00:02:44so before we get started let's go ahead and do a quick overview of this shabbat series as it stands
00:02:50because it has been a little while since we got into this but first of all there are multiple types
00:02:55of sabbaths that scripture speaks about when you go and looking at various things about sabbath in
00:03:01scripture for instance there's the weekly sabbath which is the subject of this particular series
00:03:06the weekly seventh day sabbath there's also the festival sabbaths sometimes referred to as
00:03:13shabbatons there is the seventh year sabbath known as the shemitah then there's the 50th year
00:03:19sabbath which is known as the jubilee or yovel we're not going to be discussing any of the rest of
00:03:25these we're only looking at the scope of the weekly sabbath during this particular series we'll be
00:03:33getting into a lot of information bit by bit in various episodes so if we don't get to something that
00:03:38you're thinking about offhand just stay tuned we'll probably get to it later on and if it doesn't
00:03:43get answered in this series then by all means write to us and ask us a question or at the
00:03:48end of the
00:03:48series the very last forum feel free to jump on and ask your question there if it did not get
00:03:53answered
00:03:54in the previous episodes during this particular series now we're going to be like i said break
00:04:00this up into various episodes we've already covered three of these just to recap real quick the first one
00:04:06we covered was regarding the sabbath and the tanakh and the tanakh is what a lot of mainstream
00:04:12churchianity people call the old testament then we looked at as the sabbath in the brit hadashah or
00:04:19the aka new testament in episode two episode three was the real fireball and where everything kind of
00:04:27took a turn as it were in regards to the sabbath and that episode we looked at the sabbath in
00:04:33the
00:04:33early centuries of the quote-unquote church as it's commonly defined the first about 500 years or so
00:04:42a lot of good information a lot of historical stuff right there that really explains how things got to
00:04:48where they are today this brings us up to the episode that we're looking at now which is the
00:04:54shabbat and the reformation and even beyond the reformation as well so definitely stay tuned for
00:05:00that coming up here in just a moment next time we're going to be looking at the various arguments
00:05:06that are put forth to defend sunday as the sabbath or sunday as the new day of worship so definitely
00:05:14stay tuned for that coming up here in a couple of weeks and then finally we're going to wrap this
00:05:19whole series up with a teaching on the lunar sabbath and of course a forum of the faithful and hopefully
00:05:26we'll have a special guest for that particular forum of the faithful as well if you've never heard of
00:05:32the lunar sabbath and this is definitely for you if you're kind of mulling it over thinking about it
00:05:38this was going to help you as well and if we have a special guest on hopefully that person will
00:05:44also
00:05:44be able to communicate their position um that they're coming from as well so you get two different
00:05:51sides of the coin as it were and if you're kind of on the fence and thinking things over them
00:05:55maybe those two episodes will help you decide one way or the other but regardless we're going to be
00:06:01looking at the reformation tonight next time we're going to be looking at various sunday arguments that
00:06:05are put forth and then finally wrapping up with the lunar sabbath now there's some various terminology
00:06:11that we are going to be using during this series as well for those of you who aren't familiar with
00:06:15the messianic way of speaking sometimes but we're going to be using the word shabbat and this just means
00:06:23sabbath and usually well according to scripture anyways the biblical sabbath goes from friday at
00:06:32sundown until saturday at sundown so when scripture talks about sabbath and it mentions that word
00:06:39sabbath or the day of the sabbath that is the time of the week that the bible is talking about
00:06:45so that's
00:06:46what shabbat or sabbath means when we bring that up in this particular series there's also the word
00:06:52shabbaton and that means like a high day or a minor sabbath or something like that john refers to this
00:06:59uh refers to passover as a high sabbath as a shabbaton in the gospel of john
00:07:07it's also uh generally referred to within the context of a festival sabbath like the first and last day of
00:07:14the first and last day of um passover the yom kippurim various things like that and we have the word
00:07:22tanakh which is commonly referred to in mainstream churchianity as the old testament when the tanakh
00:07:29is or the word tanakh is actually an acronym that stands for the torah the nevaim and ketuvim
00:07:36and then we're also going to be using the word brit hadashah and brit hadashah is what those within
00:07:42mainstream churchianity refer to as the new testament so that's various terminology that
00:07:48we'll probably be using during this particular series you probably heard it before so it's
00:07:52probably nothing new but if anyone's out there just joined us for the first time that's what we mean
00:07:57when we say these various words during the series now let's start out with a particular quote from
00:08:04someone that just about everyone knows and everyone is familiar with a fairly popular guy during the
00:08:10reformation his name is martin luther and most people know him from posting his 95 theses on
00:08:17the church doors protesting the indulgences of the catholic church and it's commonly considered to be
00:08:25the start of the protestant reformation but here's a quote that i absolutely love from martin luther and
00:08:33he says here quote i implore you by the mercies of god to prove to me by the writings of
00:08:39the prophets
00:08:39and apostles that i am in error as soon as i shall be convinced i will instantly retract all my
00:08:45errors
00:08:45and will myself be the first to seize my writings and commit them to the flames i cannot submit my
00:08:52faith
00:08:53either to the pope or to the council because it is clear that they have fallen into error and even
00:09:00into inconsistency with themselves if then i am not convinced by proof from holy scripture or by cogent
00:09:07reasons if i am not satisfied by the very text i have cited and if my judgment is not in
00:09:14this way
00:09:14brought into subjection to god's word i neither can nor will retract anything for it cannot be either
00:09:22safe or honest for a christian to speak against his conscience here i stand i cannot do otherwise
00:09:29god help me amen end quote and this was given by martin luther at the diet of worms in 1521
00:09:39love that quote
00:09:42saying that the popes and the councils are wrong they constantly and regularly contradicted themselves
00:09:50much even even more the bible itself and that martin luther says he's only going to be changed
00:09:56by scripture or re and or reason um alone and not by the authority of a church or anything else
00:10:03love it this is kind of encapsulating the whole idea of sola scriptura which means the by the bible
00:10:12alone meaning the bible or the scriptures are the ultimate authority not any man-made church or any
00:10:19man-made position like pope or priest or cardinal or something like that and this is one of the
00:10:26core tenets of the protestant reformation is that by the bible alone so as we go through this particular
00:10:35teaching we're going to be looking at various historical figures within the reformation three
00:10:40in particular that's going to be martin luther john calvin and a guy named andreas borstat i'm sorry
00:10:47andreas borstat i'm going to mess that name up and i'll go ahead and apologize to germans everywhere
00:10:53right now uh but you'll get when we get there we're going to be looking at each of these historical
00:10:58figures their various accomplishments various things in their lives what they said about the authority
00:11:04of scripture and also what they said about the sabbath to see if it lines up with everything else they
00:11:10have said and lines up with scripture so stay tuned for that but yeah this whole thing about sola scriptura
00:11:19that's what we're really going to be focusing on because that was one of the very core tenets
00:11:23of the protestant reformation way back then starting out let's go ahead and take a quick look at
00:11:30martin luther what kind of guy he was who he was life events and what he says on the sabbath
00:11:36and
00:11:36sola scriptura starting out with martin luther he earned a master of art at the university of
00:11:45erford graduated second in his class specializing in grammar logic rhetoric and physics very educated
00:11:52very smart man he took the vows of the augustinian order when he entered the block i'm sorry black
00:11:59monastery in erford and eventually ordained a priest in 1507 those of you who are nerds like me
00:12:06i'm giving you these dates just to feed your your nerdiness anyways he earned a doctor of theology
00:12:14at the university of wittenberg in 1512 this gave him the legal and academic right to interpret
00:12:20scripture and voice theological opinions now something i want you to understand or keep in
00:12:26mind in the very back of your brain put down your notes it's going to come up later here in
00:12:30a moment
00:12:30he earned a doctorate of theology at the university of wittenberg
00:12:36keep that in mind it's amazing stuff come up here in just a moment or at least i thought it
00:12:42was
00:12:42anyways moving on he was appointed as the chair of biblical theology at the university of wittenberg
00:12:47and he held this professor's chair for the remainder of his life he was also appointed provincial
00:12:54vicar over 11 augustinian monasteries in saxony and thuringia now that all happened in 1515
00:13:03now some major life events that happened with martin luther you probably know a lot of these
00:13:07already but for those of you or aren't well studied this is for your information too
00:13:13in 1505 martin luther was caught in a violent storm and he cried out to quote unquote saint anna
00:13:20promising to become a monk if he survived he did survive so he left law school and entered the
00:13:27augustinian monastery in 1517 12 years later on october 31st martin luther circulated his disputation on
00:13:36the power and efficacy of indulgences or otherwise referred to as the 95 theses in wittenberg directly
00:13:44challenging the sale of papal indulgences this most people claim sparked the protestant reformation
00:13:52in 1521 he was summoned before the holy roman emperor charles v to recant his writings luther refused
00:14:00unless convinced by scripture or plain reason declaring here i stand i can do no other remember
00:14:08we read this at the very beginning of the teaching here this is where he made that famous speech and
00:14:13made that famous quote martin luther was subsequently declared a legal outlaw by the edict of worms which came
00:14:21from the diet of worms in 1521 he was whisked away for his own safety by elector frederick the wise
00:14:30luther then lived in hiding during these 11 months he translated the new testament from original greek
00:14:36into german in just 11 weeks that is an amazing feat so luther was definitely a very smart guy very
00:14:46educated
00:14:47guy in 1525 luther married a former nun who had escaped her convent the union broke the long-standing
00:14:53tradition of clerical celibacy and established the model for the protestant parsonage i remember
00:15:00parsonage from my mainstream church united days it was a little house next to the uh usually attached to
00:15:06the church where the pastor of the time or the preacher of the time lived with his family until he
00:15:12moved to
00:15:12another church and lived in another parsonage but anyways in 1534 martin luther releases his full
00:15:18translation of the old and new testaments and standardized the german language and made the
00:15:23scriptures directly accessible to the common people and that's one of the biggest pieces of uh firewood for
00:15:30the protestant reformation it was the printing press and the inventing of the printing press once that
00:15:36happened and once people like martin luther dared to stand up and get the bible or the scriptures out
00:15:43in the common tongue everybody was able to read it for themselves instead of just taking the word of the
00:15:49priest on a sunday morning that was one of the biggest pieces of firewood for this whole protestant
00:15:55reformation then in 1546 luther died on february 18th in the town of his birth his final written words
00:16:03found on a scrap of paper concluded we are beggars this is true thus a couple of highlights as to
00:16:10his credentials where he went to school what he earned and what positions he held and also a few
00:16:16of the life events so going after all this martin luther was an enemy of the state pretty much
00:16:23because the catholics the catholic church anyways was in power they could pretty much guide various
00:16:30countries like puppets on puppet strings and he was a marked man for the rest of his life and he
00:16:37was almost came to um or almost was captured for execution several times constantly on the run various
00:16:47things like this so he really endured some hardships which we want to thank him for and can really look
00:16:56up to him for that but the proof is in the pudding as they say a lot of times so
00:17:02what did martin luther
00:17:03actually say about sola scriptura because these five sole as they're commonly called and one of them
00:17:08being the sola scriptura it wasn't used by the reformers at the time it was only developed later on
00:17:14and then read back into the sentiments of the reformers as far as the concept of sola scriptura what did
00:17:23martin
00:17:23luther actually have to say about the authority of scripture and getting doctrine from scripture
00:17:29itself well in his assertio omnium articulorum if i said that correctly martin luther writes this he says
00:17:41quote i do not want to throw out all those more learned than i but scripture alone to reign and
00:17:48not
00:17:48to interpret it by my own spirit or the spirit of any man but i want to understand it by
00:17:53itself and
00:17:54its spirit end quote and then in these small called articles martin luther writes this quote
00:18:01the true rule is this god's word shall establish articles of faith and no one else not even an angel
00:18:09can do so end quote so it seems to me that martin luther was definitely on board with his whole
00:18:17sola scriptura thing even if he doesn't actually use that particular term sola scriptura however as
00:18:24we've already looked at and we found in scripture itself and looking at the tanakh we looked at the
00:18:30brit hadashah we looked at the early centuries etc etc and we see for ourselves from the actual evidence
00:18:37that there is zero evidence for a change in the day of the week or the sabbath from scripture
00:18:45our last episode in the early centuries we saw that the reasoning was because quote unquote the church
00:18:52wanted to distance themselves from anything resembling judaism instead of the sabbath and what they
00:19:01referred to as the quote unquote jewish sabbath they chose the first day of the week which eventually
00:19:08became known as the lord's day but there's no biblical precedent whatsoever for a change in the
00:19:15day of the week or the sabbath so now jump up to the era of the reformation we're looking at
00:19:22martin
00:19:22luther is martin luther going to agree with the evidence or is he going to do something completely
00:19:30different let's look at his own words we know what he means when it comes to sola scriptura and how
00:19:35he
00:19:35thinks about that we just read two quotes so now let's look at what he says about the sabbath
00:19:41he says here in his work against the heavenly prophets martin luther says quote therefore also
00:19:48whoever destroys images or observes the sabbath that is whoever teaches that it must be kept he
00:19:55also must let himself be circumcised and keep the whole mosaic law it is not necessary to observe the
00:20:02sabbath or sunday because of moses's commandment nature also shows and teaches that one must now and
00:20:08then rest a day so that man and beast may be refreshed this natural reason moses also recognized
00:20:14in his sabbath law where he places the sabbath under man as also christ does for where it is kept
00:20:24for the
00:20:24sake of rest alone it is clear that he who does not need rest may break the sabbath and rest
00:20:31on some
00:20:31other day as nature allows the sabbath is also to be kept for the purpose of preaching and hearing
00:20:38the word of god end quote so this really encapsulates martin luther's position on the sabbath he understands
00:20:48still understands that the sabbath is the seventh day of the week but does he say it's still in effect
00:20:58does he say it is yahweh's day of rest that he has commanded us and put in place nope martin
00:21:08luther
00:21:08is referring actually he was a rabid anti-semite especially later in his life but one of the reasons
00:21:16he did not want people to keep the actual sabbath was because of the jews unfortunately and he kind
00:21:24of makes reference to it here in this quote and explicitly in other quotes but he says here if
00:21:29if one observes the sabbath then he must also let himself be circumcised yep definitely and keep the
00:21:37whole mosaic law yep yep we're on board with that definitely because that that's actual scripture that
00:21:43is sola scriptura right there so martin luther had this idea that the sabbath was for rest but now that
00:21:52we're in the new era or the era of messiah that we don't have to keep the seventh day sabbath
00:22:01we just need
00:22:01to keep a day of rest and that can be any day of the week it doesn't have to be
00:22:06the seventh day now
00:22:07martin luther did also believe that we should continue with the tradition of sunday just for the sake of
00:22:14keeping order and because everyone was already used to it and stuff like that but his main belief was that
00:22:20people could take a day of rest any day of the week does that jive with and line up with
00:22:27what scripture says
00:22:28not at all in scripture it says the seventh day is the sabbath what is the sabbath it doesn't mean
00:22:35day
00:22:35of worship sabbath means day of rest yeah a lot of times there was worship that went on a lot
00:22:42of times
00:22:42there was learning and teaching and etc etc but the main focus was rest ever since the beginning
00:22:51when it was the first thing that was ever made holy or sanctified it was all about rest and it
00:22:58was the
00:22:59seventh day and that is explicitly emphasized all throughout scripture every single time the
00:23:06scripture refers to the sabbath day the day of rest it's always the seventh day it's not what
00:23:12martin luther said as you know you just make it up week by week just take a day here and
00:23:17there whenever
00:23:17you feel like it no so here martin luther is showing himself to be a hypocrite on one hand he
00:23:26wants to
00:23:26claim that doctrine should come from scripture alone on the other hand he's totally negating and
00:23:33contradicting what scripture itself actually says on scripture i'm sorry on the sabbath
00:23:39moving on looking at another quote by martin luther and this is in his work against the
00:23:44sabbatarians and here he says quote therefore the seventh day does not concern us gentiles nor did it
00:23:51concern the jews beyond the advent of the messiah although by the very nature of things one must as
00:23:58already said rest celebrate and keep the sabbath on whatever day or at whatever hour god's word is
00:24:06preached end quote a lot of times you go through and look at some of martin luther's other quotes
00:24:13especially his commentary on genesis and we've got some of those quotes in our notes if you go look
00:24:18at that on our website for this article i'm sorry for on the article post for this episode but a
00:24:23lot of
00:24:23times you come across as actually promoting and believing in the seventh day sabbath but you put
00:24:31everything together and he doesn't really this really encapsulates his actual position on the
00:24:39sabbath as it comes from scripture and he doesn't take the scriptural position he just says whenever
00:24:48martin luther tends to be a rather interesting guys we looked at in our polygyny series we saw that
00:24:53martin luther fully accepted and understood that these scriptures did allow a man to and regulate
00:25:02a man having more than one wife but martin luther only said this in private when he thought no one
00:25:09was
00:25:10going to read it in a common manner and in a widespread manner and when it was a publication
00:25:16that was widely distributed he would just about go against plural marriage but yeah this is kind of
00:25:24the same thing here in certain places you'll see that martin luther almost seems like he's supporting
00:25:30the seventh day sabbath from scripture but in other places he goes against it as something that is
00:25:36jewish which we know it's not jewish it it's a yahweh sabbath not the jewish sabbath another thing
00:25:43too is we looked in our episode on gentiles martin luther is making the same error that most people
00:25:49make and it all comes again from the tradition of the catholic church as though there are two different
00:25:55kinds of people there's gentiles and then there's jews but the fact is there's not gentile is what you
00:26:03used to be it's what you were before you were saved paul says you were gentiles you used to walk
00:26:10in gentile ways but now that you come to messiah you put off that old man you put on the
00:26:15new now you
00:26:16are no longer a gentile and martin luther for some odd whatever reason he continued with that tradition
00:26:22and he never did get to the point of understanding that once you're saved you are no longer a gentile
00:26:28that probably would have helped him to understand that the entire bible the entire word of yahweh
00:26:35is for us and there's no two-house theology between gentiles and jews that get into heaven
00:26:42no i'm sorry that's a little bit of a rant and a tangent but anyways went on looking at another
00:26:49work
00:26:49martin luther writes in his work against the heavenly prophets he says quote thus it is not true that there
00:26:56is no ceremonial or judicial law in the ten commandments such laws are in the decalogue
00:27:03i'm sorry such laws are in the decalogue depend on it and belong there and to indicate this god
00:27:09himself has expressly introduced two ceremonial laws namely concerning images and the sabbath
00:27:15yes if karlstadt were to write more about the sabbath even sunday would have to give way
00:27:21and the sabbath that is saturday would be celebrated it would truly make us jews in all
00:27:27things so that we also would have to be circumcised etc end quote a couple things on this real quick
00:27:35too he makes reference to this whole concept of a ceremonial law and a moral law you've probably
00:27:42heard this before in mainstream churchianity nowadays there's no such things no such distinction
00:27:47made in scripture that is all made up after the fact and the very first time i found so far
00:27:55and i may be wrong but very first time i found so far in history where this kind of started
00:28:00from was
00:28:01from um oh i'm gonna oh thomas aquinas there we go thomas aquinas we'll look at a quote from here
00:28:09in
00:28:09just a month um a little bit later but yeah that's where it kind of comes from it's about 300
00:28:14years
00:28:14before martin luther here but yeah there's no such thing as ceremonial and moral laws in scripture
00:28:22that's all made up by man it's not scriptural but anyways going on he mentioned this guy named
00:28:29karlstadt and i mentioned it earlier and we'll be looking at him in just a moment but um andreas
00:28:34karlstadt used to be a friend of calvin and even started out i guess you could say in the trenches
00:28:41during the beginning of the reformation there with martin luther but eventually they had a
00:28:47separating of ways um over this particular issue of the sabbath but even again here martin luther is
00:28:56trying to refer to the actual biblical sabbath as the jewish sabbath as if somehow it's wrong and bad to
00:29:03be jewish for whatever reason again it's continuing that whole anti-semitism that we saw
00:29:10begin in the church way back in the early centuries but yeah back during this time
00:29:19yes think about it i don't know if you know anything about historical
00:29:22stuff during the reformation but to be branded as a jew would uh or be someone as a judaizer
00:29:31would totally discredit you and put a scarlet letter as it were almost um on your chest there
00:29:39and people wouldn't take you seriously anymore if they really and truly thought you were a judaizer
00:29:44for some reason a judaizer was also a bad thing and as we saw and we looked at various historical
00:29:51things a lot of times when the church accused someone of being a judaizer they were referring
00:29:57to someone who did biblical stuff in biblical ways not actual jewish stuff anyways it's infuriating
00:30:06but it is what it is we can't change the past we can't change history but that's what it is
00:30:11we'll
00:30:11look at andreas karlstadt coming up here in just a moment but that's martin luther we saw what his
00:30:17stance was on the concept of sola scriptura we saw what his stance was on the seventh day sabbath
00:30:23and we saw that he was pretty much hypocritical when we compare those two stances of martin luther because
00:30:30martin luther did not take the doctrine of the sabbath from scripture he continued with mostly
00:30:38tradition being the first day of the week and also some of his own stuff meaning that martin luther
00:30:44believed you could just rest whenever as long as you took one day you rest whenever now let's look at
00:30:50another prominent figure within the protestant reformation and that is a guy by the name of john
00:30:56calvin just a little bit about him and his credentials what he was all about stuff like
00:31:03that he was never trained as a monk or even earned a professor of theology like martin luther did we
00:31:11looked at some of his stuff he was a lot or he was involved a lot with the religious aspect
00:31:17of the
00:31:18time with the collegiate area and the university of wittenberg he had professorships etc etc this was
00:31:26not john calvin john calvin was not trained theologically he did not earn a professor of
00:31:32theology or anything like that he was primarily educated as a humanist scholar and a legal expert
00:31:39which sometimes can come in handy with scripture but it's not theology he never received formal
00:31:46ordination as a priest that's almost a uh a beneficial thing in my opinion actually but anyways
00:31:55he eventually earned a master of arts at the college de montague university of paris completed
00:32:02rigorous training in the liberal arts logic and scholastic philosophy he earned a licentiate in law
00:32:08at the university of orleans he earned his professional legal credentials under some of the most prominent
00:32:15humanist jurist of the era he was hired as a pastor and teacher of the church of geneva and was
00:32:22appointed by the city council even while lacking traditional clerical ordination so john calvin got
00:32:30his uh not bishopric but um his pulpit position not through traditional means like most people would
00:32:38they go be trained in a seminary or a monastery or etc etc get ordained and then go get a
00:32:46position in
00:32:47pulpit that's not john calvin john calvin got it without having a traditional clerical ordination
00:32:53now some major life events regarding john calvin in 1533 calvin's friend named nicholas copp delivered
00:33:01an inaugural address at the university of paris that strongly echoed lutheran ideas now during this calvin
00:33:09was actually implicated in the address and was forced to flee paris in disguise to escape arrest
00:33:15in 1534 anti-catholic protesters i'm sorry posters were posted across paris triggering a severe royal
00:33:24crackdown against protestants of which calvin was a protestant so calvin officially renounced his church
00:33:30benefices and fled france entirely seeking refuge in basal switzerland in 1536 only two years later
00:33:38in basal calvin published the first edition of the institutes of the christian religion which calvin
00:33:44is probably most famously known for it was written in latin and it served as as a system uh systematic
00:33:52defense of the reformed faith and an appeal to king francis the first of france in 1536 intending
00:34:00only to spend a single night in geneva calvin was confronted by the reformer guillaume barrell who
00:34:06threatened him with god's curse if he refused to stay and help reform the city calvin relented beginning
00:34:12his stormy relationship with geneva imagine that for a moment you're in geneva you don't want to stay
00:34:19you don't want to reform it you just want to live your life but these people you know threatened him
00:34:25with the curse of god whatever that means if he didn't stay and help reform it so calvin actually does
00:34:32begrudgingly then in 1538 following fierce disagreements with the geneva city council over
00:34:39church discipline and liturgy calvin was banished from geneva now keep that in mind calvin and geneva he
00:34:47was kind of shanghaied into staying and helping reform it then he was banished from geneva by the city
00:34:54council in 1538 and he spent three years pastoring a congregation of french refugees in strassburg
00:35:03marrying the widow adelaide de burr in 1540 then in 1541 geneva begged calvin to return to restore order
00:35:15upon his return he drafted the ecclesiastical ordinances establishing a new structure for church
00:35:20governance that divided ministry into four distinct orders pastors teachers elders and deacons
00:35:26then in 1553 the spanish physician michael servetus arrived in geneva now just let me stop right there
00:35:35real quick and back up a little bit michael servetus and john calvin were actually friends for a long
00:35:41time but eventually uh they there was um an axe to grind because john calvin got his ego damaged and
00:35:52so john calvin kind of threw the whole friendship out of the way and then john calvin made the
00:35:57relationship be one of mortal enemies and he actually sought to kill michael servetus michael servetus
00:36:04was actually an extremely well-educated well-versed kind of guy he was a physician who was credited with
00:36:13the first discovery of the circular storage system and he actually kind of helped apply that to the
00:36:20workings of the holy spirit very interesting stuff but he was very well educated even in scriptural stuff
00:36:27he could speak hebrew and greek and it was it was said to be a marvelous thing to listen to
00:36:35michael servetus
00:36:36debate someone in the original languages i wish i could have been there for that just to hear that but
00:36:42you know probably went over my head it would have been amazing just to be there anyways but yeah that's
00:36:49the
00:36:49relationship between john calvin and michael servetus they were friends and eventually john calvin got his ego
00:36:54bruised and he sought to actually kill his former friend michael servetus so in 1553 servetus arrives
00:37:02in geneva intending to just stay very shortly and move on to um i think it was italy but i'm
00:37:10not
00:37:10exactly sure anyways during his stop during in geneva while he intended to be a short stay but he was
00:37:18found out it was reported to calvin and calvin had servetus arrested tried and burned at the stake
00:37:24or heresy and even though calvin supported and orchestrated the martyrdom of servetus he
00:37:31unsuccessfully requested a less painful method of execution he yeah it was very horrific stuff and
00:37:40calvin in his writings even speaks about this and says about michael servetus that he would love
00:37:46to kill him again more than once if it were possible he completely took credit for the death of michael
00:37:55servetus it's a very interesting historical point but let's not get off on a tangent here anyways moving
00:38:03on 1559 john calvin established the geneva academy to train pastors in theology and classical languages
00:38:10solidifying geneva as the intellectual powerhouse of international
00:38:15presbyterianism and the reformed tradition in 1564 worn down by chronic illness calvin died on may
00:38:2227th at his own strict command he was buried in an unmarked grave to prevent his resting place
00:38:29from becoming an object of veneration and that was probably smart because a lot of times nowadays
00:38:34you'll see people especially calvinists diehard calvinists almost revere john calvin sort of like a
00:38:42prophet and it sounds horrible to say this but yeah a lot of times there are certain calvinists regard
00:38:52john calvin in almost the same way as mormons regard joseph smith not quite but very similar and
00:39:01i do give credit to john calvin for wanting his grave to be unmarked and in our own day and
00:39:09age we can see
00:39:10that definitely played out to be a very very good thing but john calvin really did not come up with
00:39:16anything new if you look at john calvin and especially some of the stuff he uh specifically says
00:39:23is nothing new in fact john calvin is pretty much just copying what augustine wrote and taught way back
00:39:31when and for those of you don't know augustine was a former manichaean gnostic he had a few years of
00:39:39a
00:39:39good run and then eventually reverted back to his manichaeanism back to his gnosticism and that really
00:39:45crept into a lot of his teachings later in life and john calvin unfortunately picked up on this
00:39:51and ran with pretty much everything that augustine said and taught it was not really calvinism it's
00:39:58actually more accurately referred to as augustinianism oh anyways i'm getting off on
00:40:04tangent so let's move on regarding sola scriptura though what did john calvin say about sola scriptura
00:40:10well in his institutes of the christian religion john calvin writes this quote a most pernicious error
00:40:18has very generally prevailed that scripture is of importance only insofar as conceded to it by the
00:40:24suffrage of the church as if the eternal and inviolable truth of god could depend on the will
00:40:30of men on the determination of the church therefore it is said depend both on the reverence which is due
00:40:37to scripture and the books which are to be admitted into the canon thus profane men seeking under the
00:40:44pretext of the church to introduce unbridled tyranny care not in what absurdities they entangle
00:40:50themselves and others provided they extort from the simple this one acknowledgement that there is
00:40:56nothing which the church cannot do for if the christian church was founded at first on the
00:41:01writings of the prophets and the pro in the preaching of the apostles that doctrine wheresoever it may be
00:41:07found was certainly ascertained and sanctioned antecedently to the church since but for this
00:41:14the church itself never could have existed end quote so calvin is saying here that the church itself is
00:41:21actually based and founded on scripture not the other way around as the church sometimes likes to
00:41:28think so john calvin is definitely sola scriptura or at least claims to be sola scriptura so when we
00:41:37examine his beliefs about sola scriptura with what he teaches about the seventh day sabbath how does
00:41:46all that line up well let's look at what he wrote on the seventh day sabbath and here again in
00:41:52his
00:41:52institutes of the christian religion here he says quote the sabbath being abrogated there is still room
00:41:58among us first to assemble on stated days for the hearing of the word the breaking of the mystical bread
00:42:04and public prayer and secondly to give our servants and laborers relaxation from labor end quote
00:42:13so is john calvin going along with the scriptural teaching on the seventh day sabbath no remember we
00:42:24looked at the first three episodes especially in the very first episode we looked at the um sabbath in the
00:42:32to not we saw there it said more than once that this is a forever a perpetual statute throughout your
00:42:41generations meaning forever until the end of time which there is no end of time forever until the end of
00:42:46time the seventh day is the sabbath that's the scriptural teaching what is john calvin saying he says
00:42:57the sabbath has been abrogated done and yeah that's stands in stark contradiction not only to scripture
00:43:08but also to the teaching i'm sorry to the concept of sola scriptura so just like martin luther we see
00:43:17that
00:43:17john calvin likewise is hypocritical when it comes to his teaching on sola scriptura and his beliefs
00:43:25about the sabbath went on to another quote here from the institutes of the christian religion again
00:43:33by john calvin and he says here quote if superstition is dreaded there was more danger in keeping the
00:43:39jewish sabbath than the lord's day as christians now do it being expedient to overthrow superstition
00:43:46the jewish holy day was abolished and as a thing necessary to retain decency orders in peace
00:43:53in the church another day was appointed for that purpose it was not however without a reason that
00:44:00the early christians substituted what we call the lord's day for the sabbath the resurrection of our
00:44:06lord being the end and accomplishment of that true rest which the ancient sabbath typified this day by
00:44:13which types were abolished serves to warn christians against adhering to a shadowy ceremony end quote
00:44:22again john calvin is making several mistakes that a lot of people make and that we saw with martin luther
00:44:28also he calls the keeping of the seventh day sabbath a superstition and this is poisoning the well
00:44:37trying to convince people psychologically not to believe in seventh day sabbath because that's just
00:44:43superstition don't believe what the bible teaches that's just superstition that's what john calvin's
00:44:48saying here he also calls it the jewish sabbath again it's not the jewish sabbath it's yahweh's
00:44:55sabbath again john calvin makes this same error that a lot of people did and still do he also goes
00:45:05down
00:45:05and here let me find it again says the jewish holy day referring to the sabbath was abolished
00:45:13it was never abolished not in scripture anyways maybe the church thought they had the authority
00:45:18to do it but it was not abolished in scripture we saw that for ourselves it was never anywhere in
00:45:24scripture abolished or even changed to another day of the week also i don't know if you caught this or
00:45:32not but in this particular quote we just read he also accepts and puts out there that he understands
00:45:40and knows that the church changed the day he makes no reference to it being changed in scripture
00:45:47he says the church changed the day says without a reason that the early church substituted what we
00:45:55the lord's day for the sabbath so he admits fully admits that it wasn't the bible it was the church
00:46:03that changed the day from the sabbath to what he calls the lord's day and that's another important
00:46:09point he understands and realizes and accepts and admits even if it's implicitly so that there is a
00:46:17difference between the actual sabbath and the lord's day i mean you can't even get clearer than that
00:46:25they still understand that the seventh day is the sabbath and then there's what they call the
00:46:29lord's day amazing stuff so that's john calvin we saw his stance on sola scriptura which was great
00:46:38we love that whole scripture being the ultimate authority kind of thing and we should only get our
00:46:43doctrine from scripture itself but then we look at his teachings and his doctrine on the seventh day
00:46:51sabbath and again just like martin luther we see that john calvin is a hypocrite when it comes to
00:46:58sola scriptura versus what he believes on the sabbath so then we move on and look at a guy you
00:47:05probably
00:47:06either haven't heard of or heard very very little about and this is a guy named andreas rudolf
00:47:13bodenstein von carlstadt if i pronounced that correctly and then before i started studying
00:47:21as deep as i could into the whole sabbath and reformation stuff i had never heard of this guy
00:47:26and once i heard of this guy i'm like wow why have we heard more about this guy this guy
00:47:32is an absolute
00:47:34powerhouse and i think he even overshadows martin luther but just my opinion but let's get into looking at
00:47:43andreas karlstadt who he was his credentials some major life events what he says about sola scriptura
00:47:50and what he says about the seventh day sabbath so looking at andreas karlstadt he earned a bachelor
00:47:57of arts at the university of erfurt we've heard that before he earned a master of arts at the university
00:48:03of wittenberg appointed to teach in the arts faculty shortly thereafter then he earned a doctor
00:48:10of theology at the university of wittenberg in 1510 so keep that in mind then he was appointed
00:48:19archdeacon and chair of biblical theology at the collegiate church of all saints in wittenberg
00:48:26then he was appointed chancellor of the university of wittenberg in 1511 serving as chief academic
00:48:33administrator notably in 1512 karlstadt officially conferred the doctor of theology degree upon his
00:48:40younger colleague and academic subordinate martin luther so andreas karlstadt precedes martin luther
00:48:49and actually is the one who confers the doctorate upon martin luther he's the one who gave the doctorate
00:48:55to martin luther he was the academic superior as it were to martin luther and even his um how should
00:49:04we say
00:49:04this is um his hr superior to um in the ranking there at the university in wittenberg
00:49:15and you most people have never heard of this guy and that's just beginning it gets a lot better as
00:49:21we
00:49:21go forward he earned a doctorate of both laws and this is very very impactful stuff he earned a doctorate
00:49:28of
00:49:28both laws at the sapienza university of rome he earned this prestigious double doctorate in both canon
00:49:35which is church law and civil secular law pretty amazing uh achievement there as well so this guy
00:49:44was massively educated and extremely smart he was appointed chair of old testament at the university
00:49:54of basel he returned to academia late in life also serving as the dean of the university there at the
00:50:01university of basel so some major life events for andreas karlstadt in 1516 while studying law in rome
00:50:10karlstadt witnessed widespread ecclesiastical corruption he drafted and presented a series of
00:50:18151 151 theses for taking the roman church handing them directly to pope leo the 10th now let's stop right
00:50:28there and mull over that for just a moment martin luther drafted only 95 theses compared to andreas karlstadt's
00:50:40151 151 151 thses karlstadt i'm sorry martin luther took his 95 theses and nailed them on the door of
00:50:52the church
00:50:52and this was on um october 31st and he just left them there for people to see when they came
00:50:59in
00:50:59the next day for all saints there
00:51:03think about how passive that was
00:51:05he goes up, he nails him the night before
00:51:08and then just leaves him
00:51:09and presumably goes home
00:51:11and waits for the fallout
00:51:14Andreas Karlstadt on the other hand
00:51:16takes his 151
00:51:18theses
00:51:19and directly hands them to the
00:51:22head guy, Pope Leo X
00:51:25he like
00:51:25personally, they're face to face
00:51:27he goes up and hands them to the Pope
00:51:30that's Andreas Karlstadt
00:51:33I mean
00:51:33how much of a spine do you have to do
00:51:35have to have to do that, right
00:51:38especially back during this era when you
00:51:39disagree doctrinally, that could be your life
00:51:42it's very very
00:51:45very very
00:51:45strong spine, we'll put it that way
00:51:47for the
00:51:49sake of being PG anyways
00:51:52but yeah, and
00:51:53not only did he develop more
00:51:56theses against the church, not only
00:51:58did he directly face to face
00:52:00hand these
00:52:01theses to the Pope
00:52:03himself, the head honcho
00:52:04he also did this in 1516
00:52:08a year before
00:52:09Martin Luther nailed
00:52:11his 95 theses
00:52:13to the door in 1517
00:52:16so Andreas Karlstadt
00:52:18predates by a year
00:52:20but predates Martin Luther
00:52:21he wrote more theses
00:52:23more things wrong about the
00:52:25the Catholic Church
00:52:26and he
00:52:27goes up to the man himself
00:52:29to hand it to him
00:52:30instead of just passively
00:52:31nailing it to a door
00:52:32and waiting for people to find it
00:52:34that is Andreas Karlstadt
00:52:38amazing guy
00:52:39like I said
00:52:40you really need to look into this guy
00:52:41even more if you can
00:52:44but moving on
00:52:451519
00:52:46Karlstadt waded into the
00:52:47brewing
00:52:48Reformation conflict
00:52:49to defend the authority
00:52:51of scripture against
00:52:52Catholic theologian
00:52:53Johann Eck
00:52:54he was the primary
00:52:55debater against Eck
00:52:56during the historic
00:52:57Leipzig disputation
00:52:58before Martin Luther
00:53:00entered the fray
00:53:01now this was a very
00:53:02interesting kind of
00:53:04event
00:53:04which you should also
00:53:05look into more
00:53:06as well
00:53:07but
00:53:07Johann Eck
00:53:09was an apologist
00:53:10for the Catholic Church
00:53:10and he was a very
00:53:11well studied
00:53:12very powerful
00:53:13orator
00:53:14and he really
00:53:16put forth some
00:53:17good arguments
00:53:18and at this point
00:53:19I think Karlstadt
00:53:21was still on the
00:53:22whole Lord's Day
00:53:24train
00:53:26as it were
00:53:27along with the
00:53:27Catholic Church
00:53:28along with
00:53:29Martin Luther
00:53:29etc.
00:53:30etc.
00:53:31but at this particular
00:53:32debate
00:53:33Johann Eck
00:53:34throws back in their
00:53:35face
00:53:35in the face of
00:53:36Karlstadt
00:53:36and in the face
00:53:37of Luther
00:53:37and he says
00:53:39hey
00:53:39you say you're all
00:53:40sola scriptura
00:53:41straight from the
00:53:42Bible
00:53:42not from church
00:53:43tradition
00:53:44but what about
00:53:45this whole
00:53:45Sabbath thing
00:53:46you have no
00:53:47precedent
00:53:47whatsoever
00:53:48from scripture
00:53:49to observe
00:53:51the
00:53:51quote unquote
00:53:52the Lord's Day
00:53:53but Martin Luther
00:53:54goes back
00:53:56and then
00:53:56you know
00:53:56he starts
00:53:57developing
00:53:58these
00:53:58various arguments
00:53:59to help support
00:54:00his stance
00:54:01and his doctrine
00:54:02and stuff like that
00:54:02Karlstadt
00:54:03on the other hand
00:54:04takes this seriously
00:54:05and he thinks
00:54:06oh
00:54:07yeah
00:54:08you're right
00:54:08let me go back
00:54:09and re-examine that
00:54:10five years later
00:54:12he comes out
00:54:12with a completely
00:54:13different stance
00:54:14on the
00:54:15seventh day
00:54:15Sabbath
00:54:16even a publication
00:54:17about it
00:54:17which we'll
00:54:18reference here
00:54:19in just a moment
00:54:19but
00:54:21then in 1521
00:54:22while Luther
00:54:23was in hiding
00:54:23at Wurtburg Castle
00:54:24Karlstadt
00:54:25took active
00:54:26leadership
00:54:26of the
00:54:27Wittenberg
00:54:27movement
00:54:28on Christmas
00:54:29day
00:54:29he celebrated
00:54:30the first
00:54:31evangelical
00:54:31mass
00:54:32officiating
00:54:33in plain
00:54:34street clothes
00:54:34instead of
00:54:35traditional
00:54:35vestments
00:54:36conducting the
00:54:37service
00:54:37in German
00:54:38and offering
00:54:39communion
00:54:39in both
00:54:40kinds
00:54:40giving both
00:54:41bread
00:54:42and wine
00:54:42to the
00:54:43laity
00:54:44so he's
00:54:45still
00:54:46doing
00:54:46the whole
00:54:47Christmas
00:54:47thing
00:54:48hey
00:54:49no one's
00:54:49perfect
00:54:49then in
00:54:511522
00:54:51Karlstadt
00:54:52became
00:54:53one of the
00:54:53first
00:54:53Catholic
00:54:54priests
00:54:54to break
00:54:55the vow
00:54:55of celibacy
00:54:56marrying
00:54:57Anna von
00:54:58Mokau
00:54:59the same
00:55:00year
00:55:00he published
00:55:01on the
00:55:01rejection
00:55:02of images
00:55:02which sparked
00:55:03widespread
00:55:04iconoclasm
00:55:05anyways
00:55:06Karlstadt
00:55:07became
00:55:07one of the
00:55:08first
00:55:08Catholic
00:55:08priests
00:55:08to marry
00:55:09a nun
00:55:10and he did
00:55:11this in
00:55:121522
00:55:12now a lot
00:55:13of people
00:55:14look at
00:55:15Martin Luther
00:55:15thinking
00:55:16that was
00:55:16oh that's
00:55:17awesome
00:55:17that he
00:55:18married a
00:55:19nun
00:55:19but no
00:55:20somebody else
00:55:20had already
00:55:20done that
00:55:21before him
00:55:21Martin Luther
00:55:22was not
00:55:23the first
00:55:23going on
00:55:25in 1522
00:55:26alarmed by
00:55:27the rapid
00:55:28changes
00:55:28Luther returned
00:55:29to Wittenberg
00:55:30to preach
00:55:31restraint
00:55:31undoing many
00:55:32of Karlstadt's
00:55:33structural changes
00:55:34chafing under
00:55:36the censorship
00:55:37of his
00:55:37university peers
00:55:38Karlstadt
00:55:39abandoned his
00:55:40academic dress
00:55:41renounced his
00:55:42doctoral title
00:55:42and dressed
00:55:44as a peasant
00:55:44asking to be
00:55:46called
00:55:46brother
00:55:47Andreas
00:55:48now at
00:55:50a certain
00:55:50point
00:55:51Andreas
00:55:52Karlstadt
00:55:53and Martin
00:55:53Luther
00:55:53were on the
00:55:54same page
00:55:55as far as
00:55:55the Sabbath
00:55:56goes
00:55:56but eventually
00:55:58Karlstadt
00:55:59goes with
00:55:59the biblical
00:56:00Sabbath
00:56:01instead of
00:56:02the Catholic
00:56:02Sabbath
00:56:03and that
00:56:04put a
00:56:05wedge between
00:56:06Karlstadt
00:56:07and Martin
00:56:08Luther and
00:56:08this is kind
00:56:09of the point
00:56:09where they
00:56:10start separating
00:56:11right there
00:56:12Luther even
00:56:13goes on
00:56:13to write
00:56:15works
00:56:16actual works
00:56:16against
00:56:17Karlstadt
00:56:18and we read
00:56:19a couple of
00:56:19quotes from
00:56:20those works
00:56:21earlier
00:56:21but here
00:56:23I think it
00:56:24really is
00:56:25telling
00:56:26about
00:56:27Andreas
00:56:28Karlstadt
00:56:28and his
00:56:29personality
00:56:30what kind
00:56:31of man
00:56:31he was
00:56:32when he
00:56:33humbles
00:56:34himself
00:56:34and
00:56:35does
00:56:36humble
00:56:37things like
00:56:37he did
00:56:38here
00:56:38he
00:56:40abandoned
00:56:41his academic
00:56:41dress
00:56:42because
00:56:42he was
00:56:43a very
00:56:43accomplished
00:56:44guy
00:56:45we saw
00:56:46his credentials
00:56:46earlier
00:56:47he's very
00:56:48accomplished
00:56:49so he
00:56:49earned
00:56:50the right
00:56:50to wear
00:56:51those
00:56:51different
00:56:51vestments
00:56:52and things
00:56:52of his
00:56:54academic
00:56:54success
00:56:54but at
00:56:55this point
00:56:56he puts
00:56:57it off
00:56:58he dresses
00:56:58like a
00:56:59peasant
00:57:00like anyone
00:57:00else
00:57:01like the
00:57:01common
00:57:01man
00:57:02he humbles
00:57:03himself
00:57:03he renounces
00:57:04his doctoral
00:57:04title
00:57:05he doesn't
00:57:05want to be
00:57:06called
00:57:07anymore
00:57:07as
00:57:08Dr.
00:57:08Karlstadt
00:57:09as we
00:57:09might say
00:57:09today
00:57:10or anything
00:57:11like that
00:57:11or even
00:57:12chancellor
00:57:12or dean
00:57:14or anything
00:57:14else
00:57:14he renounces
00:57:16all that
00:57:16and instead
00:57:17he only
00:57:18wants people
00:57:18to call
00:57:18him
00:57:19brother
00:57:20Andreas
00:57:20I mean
00:57:21how awesome
00:57:22is that
00:57:23how awesome
00:57:23an example
00:57:25of humility
00:57:25is that
00:57:26from this
00:57:26guy
00:57:27Andreas
00:57:27Karlstadt
00:57:28which most
00:57:28people
00:57:29have not
00:57:30ever heard
00:57:30of
00:57:31absolutely
00:57:32amazing
00:57:32in 1523
00:57:34Karlstadt
00:57:35withdrew to
00:57:36pastor a
00:57:36rural
00:57:37congregation
00:57:37in Orlamund
00:57:38implementing
00:57:40a radical
00:57:40communal
00:57:41I'm sorry
00:57:42implementing
00:57:42radical communal
00:57:43reforms
00:57:44including the
00:57:45rejection of
00:57:46infant baptism
00:57:47in August
00:57:481524
00:57:49a final
00:57:50tense
00:57:50confrontation
00:57:51with Luther
00:57:51at an
00:57:52inn
00:57:52in Gina
00:57:53failed to
00:57:54reconcile
00:57:54them
00:57:55and
00:57:55Karlstadt
00:57:56was
00:57:56banished
00:57:57from
00:57:57Saxony
00:57:58so apparently
00:57:59there was
00:58:00some sort
00:58:00of attempt
00:58:01to get
00:58:02the friendship
00:58:02back on
00:58:03track
00:58:03but it
00:58:04did not
00:58:05work
00:58:06and that
00:58:06was pretty
00:58:07much the
00:58:07end of
00:58:08their
00:58:08friendship
00:58:08and any
00:58:09attempt
00:58:10to reconcile
00:58:11their friendship
00:58:12at that
00:58:12point
00:58:141525
00:58:14implicated
00:58:15by his
00:58:16detractors
00:58:17in the
00:58:17German
00:58:17peasants
00:58:18war
00:58:18which was
00:58:19a very
00:58:20very nasty
00:58:20thing
00:58:21which
00:58:21Martin
00:58:22Luther
00:58:22actually
00:58:22was
00:58:23connected
00:58:24to
00:58:25in certain
00:58:26ways
00:58:26anyways
00:58:26but
00:58:27Karlstadt
00:58:27became a
00:58:28fugitive
00:58:29out of
00:58:29desperation
00:58:30he
00:58:30sought
00:58:31sanctuary
00:58:31from
00:58:32Luther
00:58:32who
00:58:33interceded
00:58:33on the
00:58:34condition
00:58:34that
00:58:34Karlstadt
00:58:35retract
00:58:36certain
00:58:36views
00:58:37and
00:58:37remain
00:58:37silent
00:58:38he
00:58:39spent
00:58:39four
00:58:39years
00:58:39working
00:58:40quietly
00:58:40as a
00:58:41farmer
00:58:41and
00:58:42peddler
00:58:42outside
00:58:43Wittenberg
00:58:44a lot
00:58:45of things
00:58:45going on
00:58:46in and
00:58:47around
00:58:47Wittenberg
00:58:48apparently
00:58:48then in
00:58:501529
00:58:51unable to
00:58:52tolerate
00:58:52the forced
00:58:52silence
00:58:53Karlstadt
00:58:54fled
00:58:54Germany
00:58:55for
00:58:55Switzerland
00:58:56he was
00:58:57welcomed
00:58:57by the
00:58:57Swiss
00:58:57reformer
00:58:59Huldrich
00:59:00Zwingling
00:59:01and took
00:59:01up pastoral
00:59:02duties
00:59:02as a
00:59:03vicar
00:59:03in
00:59:04Zurich
00:59:04in
00:59:051541
00:59:06finally
00:59:06after
00:59:07successfully
00:59:07teaching
00:59:08Old Testament
00:59:09scripture
00:59:09at the
00:59:10University
00:59:10of
00:59:10Basel
00:59:11for
00:59:11seven
00:59:11years
00:59:12Karlstadt
00:59:13contracted
00:59:13the plague
00:59:14and died
00:59:15on
00:59:15December
00:59:1724th
00:59:18amazing
00:59:19guy
00:59:20humble
00:59:21guy
00:59:21apparently
00:59:21and
00:59:22very well
00:59:23educated
00:59:24and
00:59:24yeah
00:59:25he just
00:59:25wanted to
00:59:26get the
00:59:26word out
00:59:26there
00:59:26he couldn't
00:59:27stand
00:59:27the
00:59:27silence
00:59:27and
00:59:28awesome
00:59:29guy
00:59:29definitely
00:59:30looked more
00:59:30into
00:59:31this guy
00:59:31and others
00:59:32I'll give you
00:59:32some more
00:59:33names here
00:59:33at the
00:59:33end too
00:59:34but
00:59:34Andres
00:59:35Karlstadt
00:59:35is definitely
00:59:36a guy
00:59:37to do
00:59:38some more
00:59:38research
00:59:39in there
00:59:40but
00:59:41anyways
00:59:42Luther
00:59:43became
00:59:43famously
00:59:44and
00:59:44virulently
00:59:45anti-semitic
00:59:46later in
00:59:46his life
00:59:47but
00:59:47Karlstadt's
00:59:47legacy
00:59:48is entirely
00:59:49different
00:59:49in fact
00:59:50Karlstadt
00:59:52there's
00:59:52some
00:59:53things
00:59:53that
00:59:53people
00:59:53point
00:59:53to
00:59:54that
00:59:54they
00:59:54say
00:59:55is
00:59:55anti-semitic
00:59:56but
00:59:57it's
00:59:57not
00:59:57really
00:59:57once
00:59:58you
00:59:58start
00:59:58looking
00:59:58at
00:59:58it
00:59:58Luther
00:59:59was
01:00:00definitely
01:00:00an
01:00:01anti-semitic
01:00:01and a lot
01:00:02of
01:00:02Luther's
01:00:02works
01:00:03were
01:00:05used
01:00:06during
01:00:07eras
01:00:07like
01:00:08Nazi
01:00:08Germany
01:00:08and things
01:00:09like that
01:00:09too
01:00:10but not
01:00:10Andres
01:00:11Karlstadt
01:00:11Andres
01:00:12Karlstadt
01:00:12was not
01:00:13anti-semitic
01:00:14In 1524
01:00:16Karlstadt
01:00:17published
01:00:18a tract
01:00:18defending
01:00:19the literal
01:00:20strictness
01:00:21of the
01:00:21Sabbath
01:00:22resting
01:00:23on Saturday
01:00:23the actual
01:00:24seventh day
01:00:24biblical
01:00:25Sabbath
01:00:25Luther and
01:00:27his allies
01:00:27strongly
01:00:28rejected
01:00:29this
01:00:29weaponizing
01:00:30anti-Jewish
01:00:31rhetoric
01:00:31against
01:00:32Karlstadt
01:00:32they censored
01:00:33him as
01:00:34a Jew
01:00:35accused
01:00:35him of
01:00:36Judaizing
01:00:36and declared
01:00:37him
01:00:38and declared
01:00:39him in a
01:00:40heretic
01:00:41for trying
01:00:41to revive
01:00:42Old Testament
01:00:43laws
01:00:44So you
01:00:45think about
01:00:45the
01:00:46Reformation
01:00:46you think
01:00:47about
01:00:47John Calvin
01:00:47you think
01:00:48about
01:00:48Martin
01:00:48Luther
01:00:49you think
01:00:49about
01:00:50Holdrick
01:00:50Zwingli
01:00:51etc.
01:00:52etc.
01:00:52But you
01:00:53don't ever
01:00:53hear about
01:00:54Andres
01:00:54Karlstadt
01:00:54and Andres
01:00:55Karlstadt
01:00:56was like
01:00:57the
01:00:57messianic
01:00:58guy in
01:00:59the
01:00:59Reformation
01:01:00literally
01:01:00he did
01:01:02not
01:01:02put forth
01:01:03the doctrine
01:01:03that you
01:01:04had to
01:01:04obey the
01:01:05Torah
01:01:05to be
01:01:05saved
01:01:06no
01:01:07but he
01:01:07did
01:01:08believe
01:01:09and teach
01:01:10that the
01:01:10Torah
01:01:11and the
01:01:11seventh day
01:01:12Sabbath
01:01:12was continuing
01:01:13even
01:01:14during that
01:01:15particular
01:01:15day
01:01:17Influenced
01:01:18by Christian
01:01:19Hebraism
01:01:20which is
01:01:22the study
01:01:22of Hebrew
01:01:22text and
01:01:23language
01:01:23Karlstadt
01:01:24wanted to
01:01:25reform
01:01:25Christian
01:01:26worship
01:01:27by strictly
01:01:29adhering to
01:01:29the literal
01:01:30text of
01:01:30scripture
01:01:31including the
01:01:33Ten Commandments
01:01:34Amen
01:01:34Amen
01:01:36Brother
01:01:36Karlstadt
01:01:37dismissed
01:01:38actual
01:01:39contemporary
01:01:39Jewish
01:01:40ritual
01:01:40practices
01:01:41as

01:01:45than
01:01:45internal

01:01:47Amen
01:01:48to that
01:01:48too
01:01:49we've seen
01:01:49over the
01:01:50various episodes
01:01:51we've done
01:01:52various
01:01:52droshes
01:01:53etc etc
01:01:53we've examined
01:01:55some of
01:01:55these
01:01:56practices
01:01:56from
01:01:57Judaism
01:01:57that come
01:01:58from the
01:01:59oral
01:01:59Torah
01:02:00from the
01:02:00oral
01:02:01law
01:02:01and how
01:02:02wrong
01:02:03they are
01:02:03and you
01:02:04can kind
01:02:04of
01:02:04understand
01:02:05what
01:02:06Karlstadt
01:02:06is getting
01:02:06at
01:02:07right here
01:02:07where these
01:02:08particular
01:02:08practices
01:02:09these oral
01:02:10law
01:02:10practices
01:02:10that he
01:02:12references
01:02:12as
01:02:13carnal
01:02:13or overly
01:02:14focused
01:02:14on
01:02:14external
01:02:15forms
01:02:16instead
01:02:16of
01:02:17like
01:02:17the
01:02:17Messiah
01:02:18taught
01:02:18us
01:02:18an
01:02:19internal
01:02:19faith
01:02:20and we
01:02:20even see
01:02:20that way
01:02:21back in
01:02:21the
01:02:21Tannach
01:02:22as well
01:02:22we know
01:02:23that he
01:02:23wasn't
01:02:24anti-semitic
01:02:24and we
01:02:25know
01:02:25that he
01:02:25also
01:02:26supported
01:02:27and upheld
01:02:27the
01:02:28Tanakh
01:02:28the
01:02:29Torah
01:02:29etc
01:02:30etc
01:02:30and especially
01:02:31the
01:02:32seventh
01:02:32day
01:02:32Sabbath
01:02:33which
01:02:33we'll
01:02:33see
01:02:33by some
01:02:34of his
01:02:34quotes
01:02:35here
01:02:35in just
01:02:35a
01:02:35moment
01:02:37when
01:02:37advocating
01:02:38for the
01:02:38destruction
01:02:39of religious
01:02:39statues
01:02:40and icons
01:02:41in Christian
01:02:41churches
01:02:42Karlstadt
01:02:43used the
01:02:43Old Testament
01:02:44conquest
01:02:45of Canaan
01:02:45as a
01:02:45metaphor
01:02:46arguing
01:02:47that if
01:02:47ancient
01:02:48Israel
01:02:48was commanded
01:02:49to smash
01:02:49idols
01:02:50Christians
01:02:51should do
01:02:51the same
01:02:51to Catholic
01:02:52images
01:02:54and there
01:02:55was a lot
01:02:56of times
01:02:56they actually
01:02:56did that
01:02:57during the
01:02:57Reformation
01:02:58which
01:02:59did not
01:03:00win them
01:03:00any friends
01:03:01in the
01:03:01Catholic
01:03:01Church
01:03:02that may
01:03:03be a
01:03:03teaching
01:03:04we should
01:03:04do
01:03:04sometime
01:03:04about
01:03:05images
01:03:06and
01:03:06statues
01:03:07and stuff
01:03:07like that
01:03:08but
01:03:08what is
01:03:09so we
01:03:10looked at
01:03:10Martin
01:03:10Luther
01:03:10we looked
01:03:11at
01:03:11John
01:03:11Calvin
01:03:11we looked
01:03:12at
01:03:12what
01:03:12they
01:03:13said
01:03:13about
01:03:14sola
01:03:15scriptura
01:03:15and this
01:03:15concept
01:03:16so what
01:03:17does
01:03:17Andres
01:03:17Karlstadt
01:03:18say
01:03:19about the
01:03:19concept
01:03:20of
01:03:20sola
01:03:21scriptura
01:03:21well he

01:03:32quote
01:03:32the authority
01:03:33of a single
01:03:34teacher of
01:03:34scripture
01:03:35is justly
01:03:35preferred
01:03:36to that
01:03:36of the
01:03:37Pope
01:03:37if he
01:03:38is supported
01:03:39by better

01:03:40scripture
01:03:40or by
01:03:41better
01:03:41reasons
01:03:42the word
01:03:43of God
01:03:43is above

01:03:52or a thousand
01:03:54of Henry's
01:03:54churches
01:03:55should stand
01:03:56against me

01:04:17karlstadt
01:04:18believes
01:04:18that the

01:04:20should be
01:04:21our final
01:04:22and ultimate
01:04:22authority
01:04:23not the
01:04:24church
01:04:24and not

01:04:26but what

01:04:28well
01:04:29let's
01:04:29look at
01:04:29that

01:04:37or
01:04:37of
01:04:37the

01:04:42before us
01:04:42all commandments

01:04:44to make us
01:04:45aware of our
01:04:45inner image

01:05:49just like
01:05:50yahweh
01:05:50did
01:05:51and here
01:05:52karlstadt
01:05:52is saying
01:05:53the exact
01:05:53same
01:05:54thing
01:05:54that all
01:05:54of the
01:05:55commandments
01:05:55of god
01:05:56demands
01:05:57to be
01:05:57like
01:05:57that

01:06:23the commandment
01:06:24for the
01:06:25seventh
01:06:25day
01:06:26sabbath
01:06:26i went on
01:06:28looking at
01:06:29another quote
01:06:29from his
01:06:30word
01:06:30von dem
01:06:31sabbat
01:06:33karlstadt
01:06:34writes
01:06:34quote
01:06:35if servants
01:06:36have worked
01:06:36for six
01:06:37days
01:06:37they are
01:06:37to have
01:06:38the seventh
01:06:38day off
01:06:39god says
01:06:40without
01:06:40distinction
01:06:41remember to
01:06:42celebrate
01:06:42the seventh
01:06:43day
01:06:43he does
01:06:44not say
01:06:45that we
01:06:45must keep
01:06:45sunday
01:06:46or saturday
01:06:47as the
01:06:47seventh
01:06:47day
01:06:47it is no
01:06:48secret that
01:06:49human beings
01:06:49instituted
01:06:50sunday
01:06:51as for
01:06:51saturday
01:06:52the matter
01:06:52is still
01:06:53being debated
01:06:54end quote
01:06:55so again
01:06:56karlstadt
01:06:57is reemphasizing
01:06:58the seventh
01:06:59day
01:06:59sabbath
01:07:00and he even
01:07:01quotes scripture
01:07:01saying
01:07:02to remember
01:07:03the seventh
01:07:04day
01:07:05as the
01:07:05sabbath
01:07:07now
01:07:07one thing
01:07:08too to
01:07:08remember
01:07:09that he
01:07:09says that
01:07:10human beings
01:07:11instituted
01:07:11sunday
01:07:12amen
01:07:12he's absolutely
01:07:14right
01:07:14he's actually
01:07:15absolutely
01:07:15contradicting
01:07:16the catholic
01:07:18teaching
01:07:18that sunday
01:07:19is the
01:07:20sabbath
01:07:20he goes on
01:07:21then there
01:07:21at the end
01:07:22to say
01:07:22as for
01:07:23saturday
01:07:23the matter
01:07:23is still
01:07:24being debated
01:07:24now
01:07:25i don't know
01:07:25exactly what
01:07:26it means
01:07:26by that
01:07:27but keep
01:07:27in mind
01:07:28that the
01:07:28scriptural
01:07:29sabbath
01:07:30is from
01:07:31friday
01:07:31at sundown
01:07:32until
01:07:32saturday
01:07:33at sundown
01:07:33so it's
01:07:34not
01:07:34midnight
01:07:35to midnight
01:07:36saturday
01:07:36as we would
01:07:37think now
01:07:38maybe that's
01:07:39what he meant
01:07:39maybe not
01:07:39but just
01:07:40want to
01:07:41clarify that
01:07:42for everybody
01:07:42as a
01:07:44both as a
01:07:45clarification
01:07:45and as a
01:07:46possible point
01:07:47for what
01:07:48karlstadt
01:07:48was getting
01:07:50at here
01:07:50in that
01:07:51last sentence
01:07:51but let it
01:07:53be known
01:07:53karlstadt
01:07:54is definitely
01:07:55someone who
01:07:56holds to
01:07:57the seventh
01:07:58day
01:07:58sabbath
01:07:59another quote
01:08:01from von
01:08:01den
01:08:02sabbat
01:08:02by andreas
01:08:03karlstadt
01:08:04and he
01:08:05says here
01:08:05quote
01:08:05the purpose
01:08:07of the
01:08:07sabbath
01:08:07is to
01:08:07honor and
01:08:08praise god
01:08:09alone
01:08:09and the
01:08:10devil
01:08:10or the
01:08:11son of
01:08:11the devil
01:08:12referring to
01:08:12papal
01:08:13authority
01:08:13rejects christ
01:08:15by such
01:08:15invented
01:08:16feast days
01:08:17particularly
01:08:18sabbaths
01:08:18for saints
01:08:19and angels
01:08:20end quote
01:08:22so here
01:08:23he's going
01:08:24against the
01:08:24saints days
01:08:25and also
01:08:27just the
01:08:27general idea
01:08:28of saints
01:08:29and praying
01:08:29to saints
01:08:30and stuff
01:08:31like that
01:08:32and not
01:08:33the true
01:08:33sabbath
01:08:34like scripture
01:08:36demands
01:08:37and puts
01:08:37forth
01:08:37so karlstadt
01:08:39was definitely
01:08:40in my opinion
01:08:40a proto messianic
01:08:42what we call
01:08:43messianic
01:08:43nowadays
01:08:44but karlstadt
01:08:44was that guy
01:08:46back during
01:08:47what we refer
01:08:47to as the
01:08:48reformation
01:08:49nowadays
01:08:50a lot of
01:08:51good stuff
01:08:51goes into
01:08:52the life
01:08:53and times
01:08:53and teachings
01:08:54of andres
01:08:55karlstadt
01:08:55and once
01:08:56again if
01:08:57you get
01:08:57the time
01:08:57and the
01:08:58opportunity
01:08:58definitely
01:08:59go more
01:09:00in depth
01:09:00on this
01:09:01particular
01:09:01guy
01:09:02what he
01:09:02was all
01:09:03about
01:09:03what he
01:09:03taught
01:09:03is an
01:09:04absolute
01:09:05powerhouse
01:09:06he was
01:09:07fluent
01:09:07in hebrew
01:09:09and greek
01:09:10and latin
01:09:11so he could
01:09:12read the
01:09:12original text
01:09:13he could
01:09:13read the
01:09:13text of
01:09:14the past
01:09:15thousand or
01:09:16so years
01:09:16from the
01:09:16church
01:09:17in the
01:09:18language it
01:09:18was actually
01:09:18written in
01:09:19he didn't
01:09:20need a
01:09:20translation
01:09:20he was
01:09:21absolute
01:09:22powerhouse
01:09:22and it's
01:09:24a shame
01:09:25that more
01:09:25people don't
01:09:26know about
01:09:27andres
01:09:27karlstadt
01:09:28a guy
01:09:29like i said
01:09:30again
01:09:30who i think
01:09:32overshadows
01:09:33even martin
01:09:34luther
01:09:34and what he
01:09:35did and his
01:09:37credentials and
01:09:37his education
01:09:38etc etc
01:09:39definitely
01:09:40overshadows
01:09:41john calvin
01:09:41that's
01:09:41no brainer
01:09:42but yeah
01:09:43andres
01:09:44karlstadt is
01:09:45someone that
01:09:45people should
01:09:46know a
01:09:47whole lot
01:09:47more about
01:09:48and that
01:09:50all of us
01:09:50should learn
01:09:50more about
01:09:51as well
01:09:52because he's
01:09:53definitely not
01:09:54known enough
01:09:55now one caveat
01:09:56there is that
01:09:58the works by
01:09:58andres karlstadt
01:10:00are very hard
01:10:02to come by
01:10:02in english
01:10:03or at least
01:10:03i found it
01:10:04hard to come
01:10:05by in english
01:10:05so if you do
01:10:07come by some
01:10:08of his works
01:10:09they'll probably
01:10:09be in german
01:10:10and you'll need
01:10:11to somehow
01:10:12translate those
01:10:14if at all
01:10:15possible
01:10:15so utilize
01:10:16ai if you
01:10:17can
01:10:18or if you
01:10:19can find
01:10:20a english
01:10:21translation
01:10:21by all
01:10:22means
01:10:22please let
01:10:23me know
01:10:23send me a
01:10:23link
01:10:24it's a lot
01:10:24easier to
01:10:25have a
01:10:26pre-translated
01:10:27work than
01:10:28it is to
01:10:28sit there and
01:10:29go through
01:10:29the whole
01:10:30process of
01:10:31ai but
01:10:31yeah
01:10:31yeah definitely
01:10:33that's
01:10:34andres
01:10:35karlstadt
01:10:35so some
01:10:36miscellaneous
01:10:37stuff here
01:10:37real quick
01:10:39this is
01:10:39some eye
01:10:40opening stuff
01:10:41for sure
01:10:42we mentioned
01:10:43earlier the
01:10:44guy named
01:10:45johann
01:10:46eck the
01:10:47apologist
01:10:47for the
01:10:48catholic
01:10:48church who
01:10:49was at
01:10:49the
01:10:50leipzig
01:10:50debate
01:10:50against
01:10:51karlstadt
01:10:52and luther
01:10:53but here's
01:10:55a quote
01:10:55about the
01:10:57seventh day
01:10:57sabbath
01:10:58from johann
01:10:59eck
01:10:59and this is
01:11:00from the
01:11:01404 theses
01:11:02of johann
01:11:03eck and he
01:11:04says quote
01:11:04therefore it
01:11:06thus is clear
01:11:07that the church
01:11:08is older than
01:11:09scripture
01:11:09and scripture
01:11:10would not be
01:11:11authentic
01:11:12without the
01:11:12church's
01:11:13authority
01:11:13scripture
01:11:14teaches
01:11:15remember to
01:11:16hallow the
01:11:16sabbath day
01:11:17six days
01:11:18you shall
01:11:18labor and
01:11:19do all your
01:11:19work but
01:11:20the seventh
01:11:20day is the
01:11:20sabbath day
01:11:21of the lord
01:11:22your god
01:11:23yet the
01:11:24church has
01:11:25changed the
01:11:26sabbath into
01:11:27sunday on
01:11:28its own
01:11:29authority on
01:11:30which you
01:11:30have no
01:11:32scripture
01:11:33end quote
01:11:35and he's
01:11:36absolutely right
01:11:37that is the
01:11:38argument he put
01:11:39forth to
01:11:39karlstadt and
01:11:40luther during
01:11:41the leipzig
01:11:42debate but
01:11:44he's absolutely
01:11:44right there
01:11:44is no
01:11:45biblical
01:11:45justification
01:11:46for the
01:11:47change of
01:11:48the day
01:11:48of the
01:11:48week or
01:11:49the sabbath
01:11:50and it
01:11:51openly
01:11:52admits it
01:11:53right here
01:11:53the historical
01:11:54evidence admits
01:11:55it that it's
01:11:56not from
01:11:58scripture it's
01:11:59by the
01:12:00church
01:12:01assuming the
01:12:02authority to
01:12:03change the
01:12:04sabbath day
01:12:04now also
01:12:06mention a
01:12:07guy named
01:12:08aquinas there
01:12:09we go
01:12:09thomas
01:12:10aquinas
01:12:10anyways
01:12:11thomas
01:12:11aquinas
01:12:12says this
01:12:13in his
01:12:13summa
01:12:14theologica
01:12:15it says
01:12:15here quote
01:12:16in the new
01:12:17law the
01:12:17observance of
01:12:18the lord's
01:12:18day took
01:12:18the place of
01:12:19the observance
01:12:20of the
01:12:20sabbath not
01:12:21by virtue of
01:12:22the precept
01:12:23but by the
01:12:24institution of
01:12:25the church
01:12:26and the
01:12:27custom of
01:12:27christian
01:12:28people
01:12:28end quote
01:12:29thomas
01:12:30aquinas is a
01:12:31very looked
01:12:32up to guy
01:12:32within
01:12:33catholicism
01:12:34very looked
01:12:35up to
01:12:36and like
01:12:37i said
01:12:37is when
01:12:38i look
01:12:39back and
01:12:39i may be
01:12:40wrong but
01:12:41aquinas is
01:12:42actually the
01:12:42first guy
01:12:43i've seen
01:12:43put forth the
01:12:44concept that
01:12:45there is a
01:12:47ceremonial and
01:12:47a moral law
01:12:48within the
01:12:49it's not
01:12:50there's actually
01:12:51not but he's
01:12:52the first guy
01:12:52i've seen
01:12:53put it forth
01:12:54and it just
01:12:55kind of took
01:12:55hold and
01:12:56everyone kind
01:12:57of believes
01:12:57that now in
01:12:58mainstream
01:12:58church
01:12:59entity but
01:13:00aquinas is
01:13:01saying the
01:13:01exact same
01:13:02thing that
01:13:02johan egg
01:13:03did 300
01:13:04years later
01:13:05egg probably
01:13:06got it from
01:13:07aquinas but
01:13:08aquinas admits
01:13:09also that the
01:13:11change of the
01:13:12sabbath or what
01:13:13people believe to
01:13:14be a change of
01:13:14the sabbath did
01:13:15not come from
01:13:15scripture but by
01:13:17the institution of
01:13:18the church
01:13:20it's a catholic
01:13:21invention that
01:13:22sunday is the
01:13:24day of worship
01:13:25pure catholic
01:13:27not scriptural
01:13:28but that's way
01:13:29back then we
01:13:30looked at johan
01:13:30egg during the
01:13:31time of the
01:13:32reformation we
01:13:32looked 300 years
01:13:33before that at
01:13:34thomas aquinas
01:13:35and what he
01:13:35had to say
01:13:36about it
01:13:36but this
01:13:37kind of
01:13:37trickled down
01:13:38this whole
01:13:38thought about
01:13:39sunday being
01:13:39the sabbath
01:13:40and why it
01:13:41was etc etc
01:13:42it trickled
01:13:43on down in
01:13:44today's day and
01:13:44age and that's
01:13:45the tradition
01:13:46now and
01:13:46even prominent
01:13:48teachers even
01:13:49prominent pastors
01:13:50are teaching the
01:13:51exact same
01:13:53error nowadays
01:13:55and they should
01:13:56know better
01:13:57they've been
01:13:57trained to
01:13:59such a degree
01:13:59that they ought
01:14:00to know that
01:14:01sunday is not
01:14:02the sabbath
01:14:04these prominent
01:14:05preachers still
01:14:07say the same
01:14:08old error
01:14:09let's look at
01:14:10real quick a
01:14:11guy named
01:14:12john macarthur
01:14:13he's passed
01:14:14away a little
01:14:14while back
01:14:15but most
01:14:16people know
01:14:17who john
01:14:17macarthur was
01:14:18and probably
01:14:19heard something
01:14:21from john
01:14:22macarthur and
01:14:22seen him on
01:14:23tv but john
01:14:25macarthur says
01:14:26this about the
01:14:27whole issue of
01:14:29the sabbath
01:14:29he says here
01:14:31quote
01:14:31remember what i
01:14:32told you last
01:14:33time about the
01:14:34sabbath day
01:14:34it is gone
01:14:35right
01:14:36it is gone
01:14:37so whatever
01:14:38we're talking
01:14:38about on sunday
01:14:39we're not
01:14:40talking about
01:14:40the sabbath
01:14:41the sabbath
01:14:42was the
01:14:42seventh day
01:14:43of the week
01:14:44it was
01:14:44instituted
01:14:45under the
01:14:45mosaic law
01:14:46between the
01:14:47fall of man
01:14:48and moses
01:14:48every saturday
01:14:50that comes along
01:14:51which is the
01:14:51seventh day
01:14:52of the week
01:14:53sunday being
01:14:54the first day
01:14:54of the week
01:14:54every saturday
01:14:55that comes along
01:14:56is a good day
01:14:57for us to
01:14:57remember first of
01:14:58all god is
01:14:59creator
01:15:00and we have
01:15:01that in our
01:15:01heritage
01:15:02but the
01:15:03sabbath is
01:15:04gone
01:15:04colossians 2
01:15:0516 and 17
01:15:06don't let
01:15:07anybody hold
01:15:08you to a
01:15:08sabbath day
01:15:09it's gone
01:15:10it is part of
01:15:11judaism that
01:15:12has been
01:15:12replaced by
01:15:13the new
01:15:13covenant
01:15:14and the new
01:15:15covenant
01:15:15has a
01:15:16completely
01:15:16different
01:15:17day
01:15:17end quote
01:15:21wow
01:15:23absolutely
01:15:24amazing
01:15:26error
01:15:27by someone
01:15:28who should
01:15:29know better
01:15:31and i'll
01:15:32actually agree
01:15:32with that
01:15:33last part
01:15:33right there
01:15:34it's
01:15:35been replaced
01:15:36by the
01:15:36new
01:15:37covenant
01:15:38yeah
01:15:39and the
01:15:39new
01:15:39covenant
01:15:40would be
01:15:40the
01:15:40catholic
01:15:41covenant
01:15:41not the
01:15:41biblical
01:15:42covenant
01:15:43oh
01:15:44john mcarthur
01:15:45says the
01:15:46sabbath is
01:15:47gone
01:15:47when yahweh
01:15:48himself
01:15:49says it
01:15:49will last
01:15:50forever
01:15:50john mcarthur
01:15:52says that
01:15:52the sabbath
01:15:53day was
01:15:54instituted
01:15:55under the
01:15:55mosaic law
01:15:56between the
01:15:57fall of
01:15:57man and
01:15:58moses
01:15:58that is
01:16:00an absolute
01:16:01incorrection
01:16:02and absolute
01:16:03lie
01:16:04because we
01:16:06saw from
01:16:06scripture itself
01:16:07that it was
01:16:08instituted in
01:16:09creation week
01:16:10in the very
01:16:11beginning of
01:16:11creation
01:16:13so it wasn't
01:16:14between the
01:16:14fall and
01:16:15moses
01:16:15it was
01:16:16actually at
01:16:16the beginning
01:16:17in the
01:16:17creation
01:16:19again john
01:16:20mcarthur who
01:16:21should know
01:16:21better
01:16:23is getting
01:16:24basic stuff
01:16:25wrong
01:16:26getting the
01:16:27sabbath day
01:16:27wrong and
01:16:28the whole
01:16:28concept of
01:16:29sabbath
01:16:30incorrect
01:16:32wow
01:16:34he says the
01:16:35sabbath is
01:16:36gone
01:16:37yahweh says
01:16:38it's forever
01:16:38who do you
01:16:40trust you
01:16:41trust john
01:16:41mcarthur
01:16:42you trust
01:16:43yahweh
01:16:45for me and
01:16:46my house
01:16:46we will
01:16:47follow
01:16:48yahweh
01:16:48so now
01:16:50in summary
01:16:52the
01:16:52reformation
01:16:53was based
01:16:54on the
01:16:54concept of
01:16:55sola
01:16:56scriptura
01:16:56and that
01:16:57is the
01:16:57concept
01:16:58that we
01:16:58should
01:16:59return to
01:16:59the scriptures
01:17:00as the
01:17:00ultimate
01:17:01authority
01:17:01for our
01:17:02beliefs
01:17:02and our
01:17:02doctrines
01:17:03and things
01:17:03like that
01:17:04not the
01:17:05church
01:17:06not catholicism
01:17:07not tradition
01:17:07or anything
01:17:08else
01:17:09martin luther
01:17:10claimed
01:17:11sola
01:17:11scriptura
01:17:12but rejected
01:17:13the biblical
01:17:14teaching
01:17:14regarding
01:17:15the sabbath
01:17:15john calvin
01:17:16claimed
01:17:17sola
01:17:17scriptura
01:17:18but rejected
01:17:19the biblical
01:17:20teaching
01:17:20regarding
01:17:21the sabbath
01:17:22andreas
01:17:23karlstadt
01:17:24claimed
01:17:25sola
01:17:25scriptura
01:17:26and was
01:17:26willing to
01:17:27live out
01:17:27this principle
01:17:28with the
01:17:29biblical
01:17:29teaching
01:17:30regarding
01:17:30the sabbath
01:17:31andreas
01:17:32karlstadt
01:17:33upheld
01:17:34and taught
01:17:34the scriptural
01:17:35teaching
01:17:36on the
01:17:37seventh day
01:17:37sabbath
01:17:38not the
01:17:38catholic
01:17:38teaching
01:17:39on the
01:17:40lord's
01:17:40day
01:17:42catholic
01:17:42apologists
01:17:43have no
01:17:43problem
01:17:44admitting
01:17:45that the
01:17:45change to
01:17:46sunday was
01:17:46of catholic
01:17:47origin
01:17:47and not
01:17:49a
01:17:49biblical
01:17:50origin
01:17:50modern day
01:17:52figures such
01:17:52as john
01:17:53mccarthur
01:17:53continue
01:17:54to spread
01:17:55the fallacy
01:17:56of believing
01:17:56that the
01:17:57sabbath was
01:17:58changed to
01:17:58sunday
01:17:59these people
01:17:59who should
01:18:00know better
01:18:01and they're
01:18:02perpetuating
01:18:03this whole
01:18:04error and
01:18:04incorrection
01:18:05about the
01:18:06sabbath day
01:18:06other notable
01:18:08figures
01:18:09take this
01:18:09into account
01:18:10if you want
01:18:10to go
01:18:12further into
01:18:12looking at
01:18:13people during
01:18:14the reformation
01:18:14who upheld
01:18:16and taught
01:18:16the seventh
01:18:17day
01:18:17sabbath
01:18:18other notable
01:18:19figures pertaining
01:18:20to the sabbath
01:18:20and the
01:18:21reformation
01:18:21include
01:18:22oswald
01:18:23glate
01:18:23and andreas
01:18:25fisher
01:18:25glate
01:18:26actually
01:18:27ended up
01:18:28being
01:18:28drowned
01:18:29he was
01:18:30bound
01:18:30hand and
01:18:31foot
01:18:31and drowned
01:18:31in the
01:18:32danube
01:18:32river
01:18:32over his
01:18:34beliefs
01:18:34so it's
01:18:34another
01:18:35powerhouse
01:18:36of the
01:18:36reformation
01:18:37who held
01:18:38to the
01:18:39biblical
01:18:39sabbath
01:18:40so if you
01:18:41want some
01:18:41more information
01:18:41about the
01:18:43seventh day
01:18:43sabbath
01:18:44and the
01:18:45reformation
01:18:45especially the
01:18:46reformers
01:18:46looking to
01:18:47oswald glate
01:18:48and andreas
01:18:49fisher
01:18:50and finally
01:18:51even during
01:18:52a period of
01:18:53uncertainty
01:18:53and massive
01:18:54oppression
01:18:54like was
01:18:56the
01:18:56protestant
01:18:57reformation
01:18:57there were
01:18:58still those
01:18:59who clung
01:19:00to the
01:19:00teaching of
01:19:01scripture
01:19:01and the
01:19:02true
01:19:02seventh day
01:19:03sabbath
01:19:04of yahweh
