00:00:14is described as a sign between you those who are in covenant with god and god himself
00:00:22this and so much more is coming up in this teaching on the sabbath and that's not a part
00:00:29of the shabbat series
00:00:49so this teaching is going to be all about shabbat and the tanakh we're going to be starting out our
00:00:54study of the shabbat in this shabbat series and starting from the very beginning which is this
00:01:00knock and we're even going to go back to the very beginning itself which is creation all of that
00:01:06coming up in just a moment make sure you have your notes ready and if you want more notes additional
00:01:12notes than what we present here because we had to cut a lot of it out in order for the
00:01:17sake of time

00:01:25particular episode there you'll be able to find the on-demand video you'll be able to find the
00:01:30draw slides as you see here on your screen you'll also be able to find the academic reports we had

00:01:46or helpful to you and it's all right there on our website at godhonesttruth.com now an even easier
00:01:52way to access that is through the link down below in the description just click on that link and it'll
00:01:56take you directly to that article post and that link should be down there whether you're watching on a
00:02:02video platform or an audio podcasting platform it should still be down there all the same so starting
00:02:09out let's go ahead and do a overview of what we're going to be studying and looking at during this
00:02:14particular series first of all we're going to be talking what the scriptures itself talks about
00:02:19multiple types of sabbath there is the weekly sabbath there is the festival sabbath also known
00:02:26as known as shabbatons there is the seventh year sabbath and also the 50th year sabbath which is
00:02:34referred to as a jubilee now what we are studying in this particular series and especially tonight
00:02:40it's going to be the weekly sabbath we're not going to get into too much detail on the other
00:02:46types of sabbaths we may mention them in passing but nothing really in depth or in detail it's all
00:02:52going to be about the weekly seventh day sabbath so i just want to clarify that as we go forward
00:03:00we're also going to be talking about a lot of stuff during the entirety of the series so if something
00:03:05doesn't get brought up during a particular episode like such as this one then by all means please
00:03:10stay tuned for the next few episodes and it may get answered by then and if it doesn't then make
00:03:17sure to send us in your questions or join us on one of the forum of the faithful series in
00:03:23this
00:03:23particular series we're going to break it up into various episodes tonight we're going to be talking
00:03:28about shabbat and the tanakh as we mentioned earlier this is going to be going from genesis all the way
00:03:34through second chronicles or if you're holding to a mainstream protestant layouts from genesis to
00:03:41malachi so tonight it's going to be all about shabbat and the tanakh just within that scope of what's
00:03:48referred to as the aka old testament in episode two we're going to be looking at shabbat and the
00:03:55brithadashah or the aka new testament that gets into even more detail but tonight we're going to be laying
00:04:02the foundation with the tanakh in our third episode this is where it's going to get really juicy and it's
00:04:08going to explain a lot of things that confuse a lot of people in that episode in episode three we're
00:04:14going to be looking at shabbat in the early centuries especially the first few hundred years after the
00:04:19time of yeshua and the apostle so definitely make sure to stay tuned for that one in episode four we're
00:04:26going to be looking at shabbat the reformation what the reformers thought about shabbat and the various
00:04:33other concepts of the sabbath and also looking at various miscellaneous things that doesn't deserve
00:04:39its own episode so we're going to put it in episode four right there in episode five we're going to
00:04:45be
00:04:45looking at and examining various arguments for sunday as the sabbath you'll have a lot of evidence and a
00:04:53foundation leading up to that on the first four episodes so that should be pretty easy for you as
00:05:00we go through there but we're still going to go over them and examine them all the same just for
00:05:04clarity and understanding and then finally in our last episode we're going to be looking at a concept
00:05:10known as the lunar sabbath so you want if you don't know what that is definitely tune in for that
00:05:16particular episode but always always tune in to each of these particular episodes for all the
00:05:23information that's going to be coming your way now in past years we have done teachings on the sabbath
00:05:29but it's only been one episode or one teaching and we haven't had time or the ability to go into
00:05:36depth
00:05:37and that's what the point of this particular series is is to try and go into even more depth on
00:05:42the
00:05:42subject of the shabbat now let's go over some quick terminology real quick for those of you who aren't
00:05:50necessarily messianic minded like the majority of us watching this particular video number one we're
00:05:57going to be using the term shabbat most of you know this as the word sabbath the english word sabbath
00:06:03comes from the hebrew word shabbat so shabbat is just simply the hebrew word for sabbath so that's what
00:06:11we mean when we say shabbat typically as you see in the book of genesis especially genesis chapter one
00:06:21the days in scripture start at sunset and they run through sunset of the next day so a day in
00:06:31the
00:06:31scriptures is evening and morning darkness and then daylight that means that the shabbat or the sabbath
00:06:40of scripture goes from friday at sundown until saturday at sundown how can we prove that well
00:06:47make sure you stay tuned because we're going to be getting into all that evidence as we go through
00:06:52this series we'll back it up and we will show you but just stay tuned especially in episode three
00:06:58when we start looking at some of the evidence of the romans talking about the hebrew sabbath and
00:07:05them going to war with the hebrews etc etc so it's coming just have patience and bear with us
00:07:14another word that we might use just in passing like i said is the word shabbaton this is something
00:07:19that stands for like a high day or a minor sabbath as it's sometimes called or a festival sabbath for
00:07:26instance we just got done with pesach or passover the first day of passover is a shabbaton it doesn't
00:07:33matter what day of the week it falls on it's still the a sabbath a type of rest a day
00:07:39of rest
00:07:40that pertains to the first day of pesach then last week we had the regular weekly shabbat as well
00:07:48and then the last day of pesach was also a shabbaton another day of rest where you do no servile
00:07:56work
00:07:57the shabbat tones could go in to have a drosh all to themselves but just let it be known that
00:08:03that's
00:08:03what a shabbaton is it's a festival sabbath that's added to certain moedim
00:08:10well sometimes feast days too but particularly moedim like pesach or yom kippurim etc etc then they
00:08:18are in addition to the weekly sabbath so that's what a shabbaton is we're also going to be using
00:08:23the word tanakh extensively what is the tanakh for those of you who don't know the tanakh is an acronym
00:08:30that stands for the torah the nevaim and the ketuvim and that stands for the torah which obviously is
00:08:38the first five books of scripture the nevaim which is the prophets and the ketuvim which is the writings
00:08:45this is a collection otherwise understood as the aka old testament if you come from a more mainstream
00:08:53protestant background we're also going to be using the term brit hadashah and what is the brit hadashah
00:09:00well just like the tanakh is what the actual word is for the aka old testament the brit hadashah is
00:09:07what the actual term is for the aka new testament it's also sometimes referred to as the apostolic
00:09:14writings etc etc or the messianic writings stuff like that but we're going to be reusing the term
00:09:19brit hadashah and once again if we do not get into some of the thoughts that you have as we
00:09:27go through
00:09:27this particular drosh stay tuned because we'll probably answer it later on especially if it's not
00:09:33within the scope of that particular episode and scope of tonight's episode is the tanakh if it doesn't get
00:09:40answered tonight tune in next week for the forum of the faithful you can join us or ask your question
00:09:46and we'll get to it at that point so now let's go ahead and start tonight's teaching or drosh about
00:09:52shabbat and the tanakh and what better place to start at from the then the very start of creation and
00:10:01creation itself let's look at something very very interesting that you may not have noticed before now
00:10:08as we go through the first chapter i'm sorry the first and second chapters of the book of genesis
00:10:16notice this as we go through each of the particular days of creation i'm not going to read the entire
00:10:21creation account just the relevant points to make this particular illustration but the first day goes
00:10:28as such an elohim called the light day in the darkness he called night and there came to be evening
00:10:34and there came to be morning one day now one thing to note is that in the actual hebrew it
00:10:40doesn't
00:10:40call it the first day it actually calls it day one and if you look at it it's yom echad
00:10:47not yom rishon
00:10:49that's very interesting most a lot of translations i've seen will say the evening and morning the first
00:10:55day but that's completely inaccurate it it definitely gets the um what do you say the concept over but it's
00:11:02not semantically correct i guess you could say and there's a lot of stuff that can go into that too
00:11:08but
00:11:08that's the topic for another day now notice there it says the evening and the morning were one day
00:11:14then we go on and we look at verse eight and elohim called the expanse heavens and there came to
00:11:19be
00:11:19evening and there came to be morning the second day again there was evening and morning the second
00:11:25day verse 13 and there came to be evening and there came to be morning the third day verse 19
00:11:31and there
00:11:31came to be evening and there came to be morning the fourth day verse 23 and there came to be
00:11:36evening
00:11:36and there came to be morning the fifth day verse 31 and elohim saw all that he had made and
00:11:43see it was
00:11:44very good and there came to be evening and there came to be morning the sixth day have you noticed
00:11:49a
00:11:49pattern yet as to what is going on here every single day of creation when it wraps up everything that
00:11:59it talks about yahweh doing it says there came to be evening and there came to be morning and the
00:12:04particular day the second day the fifth day the sixth day etc etc however there is a difference when
00:12:12it comes to the seventh day notice what it says here in chapter 2 verse 1 thus the heavens and
00:12:20the earth
00:12:20were completed in all their array verse 2 and in the seventh day elohim completed his work which
00:12:29he had done and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made and finally
00:12:34verse
00:12:343 and elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart or made it holy because he on it he
00:12:40rested from
00:12:41all his work which elohim in creating had made notice here for the seventh day it does not say anything
00:12:49about there was evening and there was morning the seventh day that stands in stark contrast to the
00:12:55rest of the creation account which does include the evening and morning part there are various
00:13:01theories and interpretations to this but i just thought it was very very neat to notice that it's
00:13:07almost like it's an ongoing thing that has not been set and passed away and things like that it wasn't
00:13:15just a set time in place it was something that keeps on going even down to today was very very
00:13:23interesting
00:13:24also another thing to look at in this creation account especially as it regards the topic of shabbat
00:13:30is that number one it says that elohim rested from all his words so how in the world does the
00:13:42creator of everything that we see everything that exists how is it that he needs rest well he doesn't
00:13:50actually because it says later on in the tanakh that yahweh neither sleeps nor slumbers so he doesn't get tired
00:13:57because he is the creator so what does it mean when it says here in genesis chapter 2 that yahweh
00:14:04rested
00:14:05well this isn't a resting because of tiredness or being worn out such as we get we can't apply our
00:14:13own situation to that of the creator especially in this particular instance for instance this week i've
00:14:20me and my family i've really worked hard even though supposed to be spring break we haven't got a break
00:14:26we've been doing a lot we've been getting firewood we and on two different days we have been doing some
00:14:33remodeling both our house and another house been carrying flooring doing flooring doing some
00:14:39plumbing work etc etc so at this point in the week we are tired and we want to rest but
00:14:47when it comes
00:14:47to yahweh and especially the creation account it wasn't because he was tired that he rested instead it was
00:14:54because he was done with creation think about a project that you have and you do it and maybe it's
00:15:03not
00:15:03physically exhausting but once you complete it you just stop you rest from that work because it's
00:15:10done there's nothing else to do as far as that task goes and that's what it means here in scripture
00:15:16when
00:15:17it talks about yahweh resting he had done creation he was finished creating and so there was nothing else
00:15:23to do and so he stopped and he rested because everything was complete he also did it in order to
00:15:30set an
00:15:31example for us later on we're getting ahead of ourselves here but later on it says that shabbat was
00:15:37made for man and not man for shabbat so he set us an example for us to follow now some
00:15:47things to notice
00:15:48also about this creation account number one the cessation of work like we said earlier about yahweh
00:15:56rest in here the cessation of work is not due to fatigue but rather a deliberate act of setting
00:16:02apart time because he had actually completed the work that he had set out to do now notice also too
00:16:10let's go back real quick in this account here in genesis chapter one chapter two he says that he made
00:16:17the day holy he set it apart this is the very first thing that ever gets made holy or set
00:16:25apart
00:16:26it's actually the very first moedin which we'll get into in just a moment but he set that time apart
00:16:31and it's not a particular section of land it's not a particular people it's not a building or a monument
00:16:38or
00:16:39anything like that this was a period of time that got made holy that's what was set apart that was
00:16:47the
00:16:47very first thing that's ever mentioned as being made holy or set apart in scripture
00:16:55oh there we go getting ahead of myself the seventh day is the first thing in scripture to be declared
00:16:59holy or kodesh indicating that sacredness itself is ascribed to time not merely to objects or places
00:17:07the first thing to be blessed or made sacred was a section of time before israel before the
00:17:12tabernacle etc etc even before israel was set apart as a people group the sabbath was set apart and made
00:17:22holy shabbat is a temporal sign and that's something to keep in mind too because as we go through the
00:17:28scriptures tonight you'll see that the shabbat is a sign between us and yahweh but the shabbat is a temporal
00:17:36sign a sign in time sort of like the rainbow is a visual sign that we see up in the
00:17:42sky and the
00:17:43circumcision is a physical sign also shabbat in like manner is a temporal sign the placement at the
00:17:52end of the creation or the conclusion of creation signals that the sabbath is
00:18:00meant for everyone and it's meaning that it is universal and it's well we'll leave it at that
00:18:08it means that's universal this whole world was created during the creation account for everyone
00:18:14it's universal and the shabbat was part of that creation account and that makes it universal as
00:18:21well so in contrast to what we saw with the noahide laws shabbat is for everyone not just a specific
00:18:29race shabbat is part of a is part of creation as we saw earlier and it's the cap the uh
00:18:39we call it
00:18:40uh-huh we had it just then uh is the conclusion of creation it is the seal of creation and
00:18:49on there
00:18:49oh i gotta save my notes here so not only is shabbat set apart is the first thing to be
00:18:53set apart
00:18:54not only is it the conclusion of creation but that capped everything off and it sealed creation
00:19:00that is shabbat it's gonna be reiterated and later on in this knock as we go forward in this you'll
00:19:07see that here in just a moment as we get into the book of exodus and yahweh himself gave us
00:19:13a divine
00:19:13example by resting on the first shabbat now once again yahweh himself did not get tired and so he did
00:19:21not need to physically rest and recoup his strength as we do but instead he did give us an example
00:19:28by
00:19:28resting and we are to imitate that something called in latin the imitatio day the imitation of god and
00:19:38this is one of those things that we should imitate one of the things of god that we should imitate
00:19:42and
00:19:42that is resting on shabbat just like yahweh rested on the very first shabbat during the week of creation
00:19:49and set it apart and made it holy and shabbat was the first moed for those of you who don't
00:19:56know
00:19:56moed is a hebrew term that means set i'm sorry uh appointed time there we go
00:20:05i'm going too fast here i'm just gonna slow down a little bit but moed means an appointed time and
00:20:11shabbat was the very first moed or the very first appointed time we'll see that as we go through here
00:20:18too because it's always listed when it talks about the moed later on in sanak the other moedim
00:20:23such as pesach such as shavuot such as sakot etc etc shabbat is mentioned as one of those moedim and
00:20:31shabbat was the first moed now let's go ahead and go on past creation and continue through the tanakh
00:20:39as it is regarding the shabbat now it would be my contention that ever since the beginning of
00:20:47creation all the way up through the time that the people went into egypt that they knew about the torah
00:20:55about the instructions that yahweh had handed down now what proof do we have we can see various proof
00:21:03here and there throughout the tanakh or especially throughout the genesis account leading up to the
00:21:11slavery in egypt but there is very very sparse information and evidence about the shabbat however
00:21:18it would be my contention that even the shabbat was known before the slavery in egypt and then when it
00:21:24came out of egypt they had to be re-taught these various things and especially the shabbat and also
00:21:32faith and reliance on yahweh and here is some evidence to show you just that we look at exodus
00:21:41chapter 16 specifically verses 2 through 30 and i cut out some of this just for the sake of time
00:21:47but you
00:21:47can read the full context on your uh on your own or for yourself if you'd like but the reference
00:21:54is
00:21:54exodus 16 2-30 and all the congregation of the children of israel grumbled against mosheh and
00:22:01aaron and yahweh said to moshe see i am raining bread from the heavens for you and the people
00:22:07shall go out and gather a day's portion every day in order to try them whether they walk in my
00:22:13torah or
00:22:14not and it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in and it shall
00:22:19be twice as
00:22:20much as they gather daily and moshe said yahweh hears your grumbling which you make against him
00:22:26and what are we your grumblings are not against us but against yahweh and it came to be on the
00:22:32sixth day
00:22:32that they gathered twice as much bread two omers for each one and moshe said to them this is what
00:22:39yahweh has said tomorrow is a rest a sabbath set apart to yahweh that which you bake bake and that
00:22:45which
00:22:45you cook cook and lay up for yourselves all that is left over to keep it until morning and they
00:22:51laid
00:22:51it up till morning as moshe commanded and it did not stink and no worm was in it and moshe
00:22:57said eat
00:22:58it today for today is a sabbath to yahweh today you do not find it in the field gather it
00:23:04six days but on
00:23:05the seventh day which is the sabbath there is none because yahweh has given you the sabbath therefore he has
00:23:11given you bread for two days on the sixth day so the people rested on the seventh day
00:23:18now once again this is something that teaches the people two different things number one it teaches
00:23:25them the sabbath the weekly sabbath because as they went through the wilderness here they had six days
00:23:32that they would gather this manna from heaven and then on the seventh day which was the sabbath which
00:23:38was what they were being taught they would not have any manna and they would have to rely on what
00:23:43they gathered the day previously so they were being taught or re-taught the cycle the six days and then
00:23:50sabbath six days and then sabbath cycle after they came out of egypt they were also being taught
00:23:57reliance and faith in yahweh they started grumbling against moses and aaron and yahweh says it's not
00:24:04against you it's against me and he gave them manna in order to feed them and sustain them
00:24:11but some of them if you read the entire section here it says that some of them gathered too much
00:24:16and then the next day if it wasn't a sabbath the next day it would stink and stuff like that
00:24:21it would
00:24:21rot and they needed to just gather what they needed for that particular day and rely on yahweh to provide
00:24:29for them the next day and not gather too much this is something that taught them reliance and faith
00:24:35on yahweh as well did it stick well not for everybody definitely not that's why a lot of them
00:24:41did not enter the promised land after they came out of egypt it was their children but some of them
00:24:47it
00:24:47did stick with them and taught them faith and it especially gave us an example and taught us as well
00:24:53as
00:24:53them the six day and then sabbath six day and then sabbath cycle as scripture lays out going on we
00:25:01look
00:25:01at exodus chapter 20 verses 8 to 11 remember the sabbath day to set it apart six days you labor
00:25:09and
00:25:09shall do all your work but the seventh day is a sabbath of yahweh your elohim you do not do
00:25:14any work
00:25:15you nor your son nor your daughter nor your male servant nor your female servant nor your cattle
00:25:20nor your stranger who is within your gates for in six days yahweh made the heavens and the earth
00:25:25the sea and all that is in them and rested the seventh day therefore yahweh blessed the seventh
00:25:31day and set it apart a couple things to notice here as this is part of the ten commandments especially
00:25:39the fourth commandment this is the longest and the most detailed of all the ten commandments
00:25:47don't believe me go look in exodus chapter 20 for yourself and this is by far the longest described
00:25:55and longest detailed commandment of all the ten commandments but one thing to notice here real
00:26:00quick as we start off it says that the seventh day is a sabbath so keep that in mind as
00:26:08you go
00:26:08through put that in your notes definitely that the seventh day sabbath is only one of
00:26:15many sabbaths we mentioned a couple of those back at the beginning of this particular episode but
00:26:21there are other sabbaths as well you have the festival sabbaths you have the seven year sabbath you have
00:26:27the 50th year sabbath etc etc so the weekly sabbath is only one sabbath among a handful of sabbaths
00:26:36number two look at the reasoning or what the sabbath is tied to here in this particular
00:26:44recounting or telling of the ten commandments because there's two different kinds there's
00:26:48i'm sorry there's two different times that the ten commandments are given to us in scripture that's
00:26:54here in exodus 20 and also in deuteronomy which we'll get to here in just a moment
00:27:00but here in the exodus account of the ten commandments the sabbath is tied to the
00:27:06creation account going back to what we saw earlier and that you should keep the sabbath or remember
00:27:14the sabbath rather because on the week of creation yahweh rested on the sabbath and set it apart he
00:27:22rested on the seventh day and set it apart now compare that to what we read in deuteronomy chapter
00:27:295 verses 12-15 here it says guard the sabbath day to set it apart as yahweh your elohim commanded
00:27:38you
00:27:38six days you labor and shall do all your work but the seventh day is a sabbath of yahweh your
00:27:44elohim
00:27:44you do not do any work you nor your son nor your daughter nor your male servant nor your female
00:27:49servant nor your ox nor your donkey nor any of your cattle nor your stranger who is within your gates
00:27:55so
00:27:55that your male servant and your female servant rest as you do and you shall remember that you
00:28:00were a slave in the land of mitzrayim and that yahweh your elohim brought you out from there by a
00:28:06strong
00:28:06hand and an outstretched arm therefore yahweh your elohim commanded you to perform the sabbath day
00:28:14now in contrast to the exodus account of the ten commandments here in deuteronomy is tying the sabbath day
00:28:21to the redemption from egypt and one of the things that i really believe this is trying to guard
00:28:28against is guarding against the enslavement by the hebrew people of other people enslaving them and
00:28:35making them work 24 7 without a break like they did or had to do back in egypt and i
00:28:43think it's why
00:28:44they mention it here as tied to the exodus from egypt and also it talks about in both accounts
00:28:52the male servant and the female servant and every single person or i'm sorry every single aspect
00:28:58even including the animals the only exception as we'll see here going forward is the priest in the
00:29:05temple or the tabernacle of yahweh but that's coming up for the moment just take it that everyone
00:29:11whether it is your wife your wives your family your sons daughters your men slaves your men
00:29:18servants your female servants your animals livestock all everybody rest on the sabbath
00:29:27like i said there's a few exceptions but just take it right now that everyone rest on the sabbath
00:29:33this stands in stark contrast to some of the cultural peoples around them such as the babylonians but
00:29:40we'll get into that and just later on as we look at some um we set some atheist naysayers and
00:29:49stuff
00:29:49like that we'll look at that coming up near the end of this teaching but the sabbath in scripture
00:29:55is for everyone not just a certain group of people so definitely remember that as i mentioned earlier
00:30:02this kind of helps in at least my opinion helps prove kind of guard against the enslavement of other
00:30:09peoples and making them work 24 7 it helps to guard against greed because when everyone takes off
00:30:17on the sabbath there's no money to be made even if you have employees your employees are supposed to
00:30:23be taken off you're supposed to give them the day off for the sabbath so it helps to guard against
00:30:28greed
00:30:29helps to guard against placing others in servitude in order to produce for you to produce for you for
00:30:35gain or to place yourself in servitude for gain and a lot of people do that nowadays they place
00:30:42themselves in servitude they work themselves 24 7 or to get ahead in life to get ahead in their career
00:30:48to get ahead financially etc etc so this commandment both in exodus and deuteronomy in those
00:30:58differences differences or nuances in each one i think both of them definitely help serve or guard
00:31:03against these various things that we just mentioned now as i mentioned there are some slight exceptions
00:31:10to this everyone resting on the shabbat rule usually there's always exceptions so let's look at one
00:31:18exception real quick and that is the priest and this is defined in scripture actually so we're going to
00:31:24back this up priests were commonly tasked with various physical duties as we read or as we read
00:31:31throughout scripture they had physical duties they had to perform such as slaughtering the sacrifices
00:31:37then butchering it dividing it up in various ways keeping the fire burning for the ascending offering
00:31:43keeping the menorah in the temple or the tabernacle going keeping the incense the altar of incense going
00:31:51etc etc etc the show bread which we'll show you here in just a moment they had various physical duties
00:31:57and
00:31:57this did not stop on shabbat not for the priest anyways because there were even sacrifices on shabbat
00:32:05that the priest had to perform we look in x i'm sorry numbers chapter 28 verses 9 through 10 on
00:32:13the
00:32:13sabbath day two lambs a year old perfect ones and two tenths of an ephah of fine flour as a
00:32:18grain
00:32:18offering mixed with oil with its drink offering the ascending offering for every sabbath besides the
00:32:24continual ascending offering with its drink offering so they had a additional sabbath sacrifice that the
00:32:33priest had to perform so the priest get they don't get this day off they get other days off but
00:32:42that's
00:32:42a point for another time but they in general don't get the sabbath off they also have to perform
00:32:50duties regarding the show bread within the tabernacle or the temple as well leviticus chapter 24 verse 8 on
00:32:58every sabbath he is to arrange it before yahweh continually from the children of israel an
00:33:03everlasting covenant let me read that again on every sabbath he meaning the priest is to arrange it
00:33:10what is it the show bread before yahweh continually from the children of israel an everlasting covenant
00:33:18and finally we're going to look at leviticus chapter 6 verses 12 to 13 and the fire on the
00:33:24slaughter place is kept burning on it it is not put out and the priest shall burn wood on it
00:33:31every
00:33:32morning and arrange the ascending offering on it and shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings
00:33:38fire is continually kept burning on the slaughter place it is not put out so one of the things that
00:33:47the priest had to attend to even on shabbat is the continuation and the burning of the fire
00:33:54they're in the tabernacle of the temple for the slaughterings the ascending offerings etc etc the
00:34:01command to keep the temple service going which is what the priests were doing they were commanded to
00:34:08keep the temple going it was was sometimes referred to as a vertical duty to yahweh himself and was
00:34:16considered higher than the command for like everyone else the individuals the people who weren't priests
00:34:24and that's what's referred to generally as the horizontal duty those of you who do not have a
00:34:31we could say it um occupation of service to yahweh there is a difference between
00:34:41gain and serving you can serve or you can gain something like you would a paycheck or a gold medal
00:34:50or
00:34:51etc etc there is service to yahweh and there's also service to others which stands in stark contrast
00:34:58to that which you would gain through a normal occupation but even in the tanakh we see that the
00:35:04priest had duties physical duties to perform even on shabbat now we also look in exodus chapter 31
00:35:14verse 13 and here it says and you speak to the children of israel saying my sabbath you are to
00:35:20guard
00:35:21by all means for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations to know that i yahweh
00:35:27am setting you apart as we mentioned earlier the sabbath is a sign between yahweh and his people
00:35:36who are in covenant with him the sabbath is a sign of the covenant so are you in covenant with
00:35:44yahweh
00:35:46how can we tell well there are signs that we can determine whether or not you are within
00:35:51in covenant with yahweh one of those signs is the keeping of shabbat
00:35:58number two exodus chapter 31 verse 17 between me and the children of israel it shabbat is a sign
00:36:06forever for in six days yahweh made the heavens and the earth and the seventh day he rested and was
00:36:12refreshed now notice here that again is calling shabbat as a sign between yahweh and his people
00:36:20the covenant sign or a covenant sign rather also it says that is a sign for ever put that down
00:36:28in
00:36:28your notes we're not going to get into all of that right now but definitely write down that shabbat is
00:36:34a
00:36:34sign forever circle highlight underline that word forever that's going to be coming up especially in
00:36:41the upcoming episodes next ezekiel chapter 20 verse 12 and i also gave them my sabbaths
00:36:50to be a sign between them and me to know that i am yahweh who sets them apart here it's
00:36:57using a plural
00:36:58of sabbath it's shabbatoti shabbat is sabbath the plural sabbath but shabbat is the possessive meaning
00:37:07my sabbath so i also gave them my sabbath to be a sign between them and me to know that
00:37:13i am yahweh who sets
00:37:14them apart so again sabbath so again sabbath especially the weekly sabbath but also the
00:37:21other sabbaths are a sign between those in covenant with yahweh and yahweh himself and one more
00:37:29ezekiel chapter 20 verse 20 and set apart my sabbaths and they shall be a sign between me and you
00:37:37to know that i am yahweh your elohim again it's a sign it's we're beating a dead horse right now
00:37:44and
00:37:45i promise we'll stop but just this gets the point across that shabbat is a sign between yahweh and his
00:37:51people so that everyone knows or it's one of the pieces of evidence to show the world that we are
00:38:00the
00:38:00people of yahweh and that yahweh is our god which it says right here to know that i am yahweh
00:38:08your god
00:38:09yahweh your elohim so now we saw where creation i'm sorry shabbat come from even back in creation
00:38:17how it's tied to both creation and the redemption from egypt and how it is a sign between us and
00:38:24yahweh
00:38:24and nowadays with everything mixed up and twisted and tradition and history and all that other stuff
00:38:31some people think that the law is a burden that we shouldn't do it that it was done away with
00:38:39and
00:38:39all that other stuff but that's not really what scripture actually says in fact scripture does not
00:38:46call the sabbath a burden scripture calls the sabbath a joy or a delight or things like that and that's
00:38:56what we should really come to regard the sabbath as as a joy or as a delight we look in
00:39:02isaiah chapter
00:39:0358 verses 13 through 14 if you do turn back your foot from the sabbath from doing your pleasure
00:39:10on my set apart day and shall call the sabbath a delight the set apart day of yahweh esteemed and
00:39:17shall esteem it not doing your own ways nor finding your own pleasure nor speaking your own words then
00:39:23you shall delight yourself in yahweh and i shall cause you to ride on the heights of the earth and
00:39:29feed you with the inheritance of yaakov your father for the mouth of yahweh has spoken so the sabbath is
00:39:36supposed to be something that we take joy in not something that we should see as a burden or
00:39:41something negative we should take joy in it and see it as a blessing because it really is if you've
00:39:49ever been in a situation where you've worked seven days a week you know how tiring and mentally even
00:39:55exhausting that can be so it is a blessing to have one day a week bare minimum one day a
00:40:02week that we take
00:40:02off and have to rest now you add in the festivals sabbaths and there's even more than once a week
00:40:10but the sabbath is supposed to be a delight and once we start seeing it like that it becomes even
00:40:16more
00:40:17special you don't know try it switch over i promise you you can always switch back if you want to
00:40:23but once
00:40:24you see the joy the blessing of it you'll understand exactly what scripture is saying you'll actually
00:40:30understand what i'm saying and what every other messianic says as well and we look at isaiah
00:40:37chapter 56 verses 6 to 7 also the sons of the foreigner who joined themselves to yahweh to serve
00:40:44him and to love the name of yahweh to be his servants all who guard the sabbath and not profane
00:40:49it
00:40:49and are holding on to my covenant them i shall bring to my set-apart mountain and let them rejoice
00:40:54in
00:40:55my house of prayer their ascending offerings and their slaughterings are accepted on my slaughter place
00:40:59for my house is called a house of prayer for all the peoples this is starting to get into some
00:41:05of
00:41:05the end time stuff but just let it be known that it's still going to be a joy and still
00:41:11going to be
00:41:11a blessing for those who guard the shabbat the sabbath even in the end time and that's something that
00:41:20goes back to what we read earlier about the sabbath being forever we see as we read some of these
00:41:26eschatological passages that even in the end times there's going to be the sabbath there's various
00:41:33parts it talks about from sabbath to sabbath and from new moon to moon new moon all nations will come
00:41:39to my mountain to worship me and to learn my word this is part of that the whole sabbath context
00:41:46and
00:41:47here is talking about those who guard the sabbath those who love the name of who the name of yahweh
00:41:55and serve him those are the ones who will be brought to the set-apart mountain and who will rejoice
00:42:02in
00:42:03yahweh's house of prayer so even in the end times shabbat is going to continue and should still be a
00:42:10source of
00:42:11joy source of delight so now when we do a study or a teaching on shabbat we can't
00:42:20do a study or a teaching on shabbat without getting into the instructions and the regulations regarding
00:42:26the sabbath well that's what a lot of people especially the mainstreamers would want to know
00:42:31and look at so let's take a look at some of the instructions and regulations that are contained
00:42:38within scripture regarding the subject of shabbat number one we look at exodus chapter 20 verses
00:42:459 through 10 and this says six days you labor and shall do all your work but the seventh day
00:42:51is a
00:42:51sabbath of yahweh your elohim you do not do any work you nor your son nor your daughter nor your
00:42:57male
00:42:57servant nor your female servant nor your cattle nor your stranger who is within your gates again
00:43:04i just want to reiterate this whole universality of the resting on shabbat is for everyone you your
00:43:10family your wife your wives sons daughters your male servants female servants even your livestock
00:43:18everybody is ordered to rest on the sabbath but as far as the instructions and regulations goes
00:43:26it says that you shall do all your work during the six days of the week but the seventh day
00:43:33is a sabbath is a day of rest that is when you rest and that is the main instruction and
00:43:41regulation
00:43:42regarding the sabbath that you rest is there instructions that you should
00:43:51eat no you can fast on shabbat is there instructions that you should go to church no there is
00:44:00you know one particular passage that calls it a set-apart gathering to have a set-apart gathering
00:44:06but that's a study for another time just there are things that go against that particular
00:44:12interpretation though because if you look at moses when he went up on the mountain
00:44:18for the to receive the ten commandments the torah he was up there for 40 days and 40 nights so
00:44:24he was
00:44:25bound to a missed gathering with other people during that time then he came down broke the
00:44:30tablets because of the golden calf and then went back up for another 40 days and 40 nights so a
00:44:36possible 80 days stretch but that's open to interpretation so moses would have missed
00:44:43many sabbath gatherings if that was the commandment also yeshua went out into the wilderness and was
00:44:50tempted by satan for 40 days and 40 nights there as well when he fasted so he would have missed
00:44:55gathering with people on the sabbath so i don't think there is a commandment to get together on the
00:45:01sabbath but the main instruction and regulation for shabbat is to rest to keep it to guard it to make
00:45:11it holy
00:45:12and to rest but here especially in exodus it says six days you're to do all that you do all
00:45:18that you
00:45:19labor all your work and then the seventh day is the sabbath notice also when you read through
00:45:25scripture the only day of the week that has a name is the seventh day and that is the sabbath
00:45:31and this
00:45:32makes it very very easy to remember as well because you have a cyclical pattern here you work for six
00:45:40days
00:45:41rest on the seventh work for six days rest on the seventh work for six days rest on the seventh
00:45:48fairly easy right we just got to control our own desires our own inclinations our own greed a lot
00:45:55of times and just simply do it then we read in deuteronomy chapter 5 verses 13 through 14 six days
00:46:03you labor and shall do all your work the seventh day is a sabbath of yahweh your elohim you do
00:46:07not
00:46:07do any work you nor your son or your daughter nor your male servant nor your female servant nor your
00:46:12ox nor your donkey nor any of your cattle nor your stranger who is within your gates so that your
00:46:17male
00:46:17servant and your female servant rest as you do so pretty much the same exact instructions and regulations
00:46:23as we saw back in exodus 20 and we look at leviticus chapter 23 verse 3 six days work is
00:46:30done but the
00:46:31seventh day is a sabbath of rest a set apart gathering you do no work it is a sabbath to
00:46:39yahweh in all your
00:46:41dwellings once again the main regulation and instruction for shabbat is that you work for
00:46:48six days and then you rest on the sabbath so on the sabbath rest no work now this particular word
00:46:56work
00:46:57here has been the subject of various interpretation throughout the millennia throughout the centuries
00:47:03as to what exactly it means this may be something that you have a question about yourself we see
00:47:11or in the scripture says do not work on the sabbath but what is work well hate to bust your
00:47:18bubble but
00:47:19we're not going to define it for you here we're not going to dictate to you what is and isn't
00:47:24work we're
00:47:25going to give you some information we're going to give you scripture and let's call your full entries
00:47:31etc etc but we're not going to tell you what work is anything outside of scripture anyways you can define
00:47:39that for you and yourself and for your own family i'm not going to get into that whole mess because
00:47:44i really don't think that we should actually because scripture doesn't so decide for you and yours
00:47:50what work is but here's some information to help you decide on that this is getting back into the nerdy
00:47:58part of this whole study but the word work that you find here in exodus 20 deuteronomy 5 and leviticus
00:48:0623
00:48:06is strong's h4399 as strong's h4399 and it's the hebrew word melacha melacha and here is your
00:48:17outline of biblical usage from blueletterbible.org as well as your strong's definition for melacha and
00:48:25here you can see it has various terms which really doesn't nail it down to one specific concept but here
00:48:33in strong's it's got melacha defined as ministry generally employment may never servile work
00:48:41abstractly or concretely property as a result of labor business cattle industrious occupation
00:48:48etc etc so the strong's definition does not really
00:48:54bullet down to one specific definition of what work means in scripture
00:49:00then here's your brown driver briggs entry for melacha also your jasinus's hebrew lexicon entry
00:49:07for melacha and finally your jasraus dictionary of the targums entry and klein dictionary entry and
00:49:15again we cut these down to just the relevant parts for each of these different entries but if you want
00:49:20to see the full entry you can go look those up for yourself or look in our notes because we
00:49:25copied the
00:49:26entire entry and put those in there for your benefit but going on we look in exodus chapter 35 verse
00:49:343
00:49:34some additional instructions and regulations that scripture does tell us not to do or gives an example
00:49:42of what not to do exodus chapter 35 verse 3 do not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings
00:49:49on the sabbath day
00:49:51now this hits a lot of different points here as well so what does kindle a fire mean in your
00:49:57dwellings
00:49:58well number one think about the times back then what would have to be done in order to get a
00:50:03fire
00:50:04up and going and started from scratch it would require striking a flitstone i guess if you had that
00:50:11against some kind of piece of metal to create sparks and create that way which can be physically
00:50:17exhausting if you don't get it the first time i guess yeah there's the striking of the plant and
00:50:25things like that there's also the rubbing of two sticks together the whole bow and drill kind of
00:50:29method it so it's in a situation like that it's advantageous to keep the fire going instead of having
00:50:35to start it from scratch because it can be laborious in that kind of situation nowadays we have the push
00:50:43button you can start a propane gas stove or if you're like me and you got a wood stove all
00:50:48you
00:50:48gotta do is strike a match and it gets it going so would that really be considered work and kindling
00:50:56a fire in this regard well again that's another thing for you to decide for yourselves some people
00:51:02take it to the extremes for those of you who don't know there are certain sects of judaism especially
00:51:06within highly populated areas who will have elevators which go on automated shabbat service
00:51:14in other words they go from the top of the building down to the bottom of the building
00:51:19stopping at every single floor and opening the doors and it just repeats that up and down up and
00:51:23down because they think that if you push a button or you turn on switch and it creates a spark
00:51:30that
00:51:30that's kindling a fire i would personally hardly disagree with all that and would not consider
00:51:38that to be kindling a fire or work if i push a button on a microwave on shabbat to heat
00:51:44something up
00:51:46that is not work in my opinion again you can take and consider what is and is not work for
00:51:52you and
00:51:52yours and if you want to consider that work by all means go for it but i do not see
00:51:57that as kindling a
00:52:00fire as what's being talked about here in scripture but just let it be known that scripture does say
00:52:05do not kindle a fire in any of your dwellings now another interpretation which i think really goes in
00:52:12line with this particular um instruction is that in order to kindle a fire and the reason you would
00:52:21kindle a fire way back then was for the purpose of producing a product sort of like we call it
00:52:29um
00:52:30forging things in a blacksmith fire or baking bread for sale and stuff like that so yeah they would
00:52:37produce the fires a lot of times for the production of various goods and products and to make money and
00:52:46things like that so that would be the main point of do not kill a light fire in your dwellings
00:52:52on
00:52:52sabbath day would be the for the production or for the purpose of greed and make money and that would
00:52:58be
00:52:58contrary to the whole idea of rest on the sabbath i do not think this applies to the preservation of
00:53:05life remember when we talked about um we discussed earlier in another episode way back when about
00:53:13yeshua talking about rescuing a animal from a ditch and the whole concept of what's referred to as
00:53:20pekuach nefesh and that is the concept where you set aside or bend a commandment for the preservation of
00:53:28life say for instance you are stranded somewhere and the only thing that you have to eat may be wild
00:53:35pigs
00:53:35in order to save your life the concept of pekuach nefesh would allow you to eat that pork in order
00:53:44to save
00:53:44your life and once you get out of that of course you stop but the same concept would apply here
00:53:49as
00:53:49well if you and your family are freezing or someone else is so cold they're going to freeze to death
00:53:55and sabbath day yahweh doesn't want you to die just because there's to be no fire or no kindling of
00:54:02a fire on sabbath no you can start a fire in order to save your life and i wholeheartedly believe
00:54:08that
00:54:09even yeshua said that david and his men ate the show bread even though they weren't priests in
00:54:15order to save their life and to well their uh we call it malnourishment or their hunger
00:54:23understand what is actually going on if you don't have to don't build a fire but if it's to save
00:54:29your
00:54:30life by all means kindle the fire and i do not think that would be in violation or what do
00:54:37you call
00:54:38it um contradiction to the overall overarching theme of the commandments especially as it goes here on
00:54:47shabbat now let's look at jeremiah chapter 17 verses 21 through 22 thus said yahweh guard yourselves and
00:54:55bear no burden on the sabbath day nor bring it in by the gates of yerushalayim nor take a burden
00:55:00out of
00:55:00your houses on the sabbath day nor do any work and you shall set apart the sabbath day as i
00:55:06commanded your
00:55:07fathers so here i think it's really getting to the point of bearing a burden having physical
00:55:12exertion on shabbat says do not bear a burden on the sabbath day do not bear a burden out of
00:55:18your
00:55:18dwelling etc etc do not physically exert yourself i think is what the main point here is on this
00:55:27and finally we see here in nehemiah chapter 13 verse 15 in those days i saw in yahudah those
00:55:34treading wine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheaves and loading donkeys with wine grapes and
00:55:39figs and all kinds of burdens which they brought into yerushalayim on the sabbath day so i warned
00:55:45them on the day they sold food here's a couple of things number one this is i think definitely the
00:55:52engagement in commercial activity because it says they're they're treading wine why would you need
00:56:00to tread wine in order to save someone's life you i have zero idea how that could be used to
00:56:07save
00:56:07someone's life so that would definitely be a physical exertion type of work for the purpose of
00:56:15greed and financial gain commercial activity so yeah this whole section right here is talking about
00:56:22commercial activity as it's being described because you can see nothing here is about saving a life or
00:56:30promoting or serving yahweh etc etc the wine can be held off until the first day of the week or
00:56:37the
00:56:38third day of the week etc etc it does not have to be pressed on the sabbath the products that
00:56:44are
00:56:44produced from these various grapes such as the wine the grapes the figs etc etc they don't have to be
00:56:51loaded and transported on the sabbath that can wait until a later time a later day so yeah this particular
00:56:58section is talking about commercial activity on shabbat and finally going on into nehemiah chapter
00:57:0510 verses 28 through 31 and the rest of the people all those who had separated themselves from the
00:57:11peoples of the lands and to the torah of elohim all who had knowledge and understanding were answering
00:57:16into a curse and into an oath to walk in the torah of elohim and to guard and to do
00:57:22all the commands of
00:57:23yahweh our master and his right rulings and his laws and that if the peoples of the land bring wares
00:57:30or
00:57:30any grain to sell on the sabbath day we would not buy it from them on the sabbath or on
00:57:35a set apart day
00:57:38here is talking about again another commercial activity where these other people were bringing
00:57:43in things to sell and etc etc and even probably commercial services you think of things like
00:57:52shining shoes or massages etc etc these commercial activities on the sabbath day and these people who
00:57:59had committed themselves to yahweh and to his torah and etc etc they would not partake of any of it
00:58:06would not partake of them on the sabbath day and would not partake of them even on a set apart
00:58:13day
00:58:13now what are these set apart days these are things like the festival days the actual moedim themselves
00:58:19etc etc so here again we are once more getting an example of non-commercial activity on shabbat
00:58:30so once again you've got various things that are specifically spoken about in scripture
00:58:36number one the main overarching emphasis about shabbat from scripture is to rest and not work
00:58:44what is work defined as in scripture well it's very very sparse actually number one it's no kindling
00:58:50of a fire but there are nuances as we explained earlier number two the commercial activity number
00:58:56three bearing burdens things like that so as far as the fine details go scripture itself does not really
00:59:05give a whole lot of fine details as far as what constitutes work and what does not constitute work
00:59:13however leave it to certain religious authorities to define for themselves what is and isn't work and as we go
00:59:22forward in this series you'll actually see some of this uh conflict arise especially in the next episode as we
00:59:31talk about
00:59:32shabbat and the brit hadashah as one commenter here had brought up about yeshua and picking the grains
00:59:40with his disciples on shabbat the jews those within judaism came up with their own definition of what
00:59:46constitutes work according to scripture now this is added from judaism into scripture it doesn't come out of
00:59:55scripture this comes from the mishnah actually mishnah shabbat seven it comes from the talmud it's the
01:00:03mishnah shabbat seven and these are 39 different regulations defining what is and is not work according to
01:00:15judaism i'm not going to read all these out for you you can look at them here on your screen
01:00:19or go to
01:00:20the notes and check those out for yourself but it gets very very odd and most of these there are
01:00:2939 in total and if you
01:00:31read that particular section of the mishnah it actually it actually describes it as 40 less one i don't know
01:00:40why
01:00:41they couldn't just say 39 but they describe it as 40 less one so 39 different activities that the jews
01:00:50define
01:00:51as work and most of these are derived from what was being done on the construction of the tabernacle
01:01:01in the wilderness and if you go back and read in the scriptures it talks about what should be done
01:01:07as far as
01:01:08constructing the tabernacle and etc etc and even though this was the tabernacle for yahweh himself they
01:01:16still rested on the seventh day even when they were in the middle of constructing the tabernacle
01:01:23so the construction got paused every seventh day even though it was for yahweh himself and
01:01:30the whole construction part of it that's where they derived these 39 different melehot or prohibitions
01:01:37against work as it regards the sabbath and some of these kind of do make sense according to what we
01:01:44read earlier and studied earlier but some of them don't make sense at all actually as far as regards to
01:01:52shabbat and overall if you look at these it seems like for instance that one who builds a structure okay
01:02:00that makes sense but it has nothing regarding a couch if you want to move a couch on shabbat
01:02:07that is physically exerting but it would not fall into any of these various definitions of work from
01:02:14judaism so do you go with what judaism decides or what scripture tells you personally i go with what
01:02:21scripture tells us and not get carried away and put all these fences around the commandment as we saw
01:02:29or discussed earlier when it comes to such things as pushing a button and causing a spark in an elevator
01:02:36or a microwave etc etc now there are as everyone knows there are commandments in scripture and there's
01:02:44various types of commandments that people have defined them as over the years there are negative
01:02:50commandments and there are positive commandments we have saw some of the negative commandments
01:02:55as it regards the shabbat such as do not kindle a fire do not work all the do nots of
01:03:02scripture
01:03:02those kind of commands are what's referred to a lot of times as negative commands but there are also
01:03:07positive commands as well and there are positive commands when it comes to the subject of shabbat
01:03:13we look at exodus chapter 20 verse 8 remember the sabbath day to set it a part to make it
01:03:22holy
01:03:22so remember zakar the shabbat to set it apart that is a positive command make it holy
01:03:31deuteronomy chapter 5 verse 12 guard the sabbath day to set it a part as yahweh your elohim commanded
01:03:40you so we got zakar back in exodus and now we have like um who was it said there one
01:03:48day closer
01:03:49said shamar in deuteronomy chapter 5 the car and shamar remember and guard the sabbath day in order to
01:03:57make it holy or in order to set it apart those are positive commands what are some more we look
01:04:04at
01:04:04exodus chapter 23 verse 12 six days you are to do your work and on the seventh day you rest
01:04:11in order
01:04:12that you that your ox and your donkey might rest and the son of your female servant and the sojourner
01:04:18be refreshed the command to rest is a positive command is it wouldn't say do not rest it says
01:04:26to rest leviticus chapter 23 verse 3 excuse me six days work is done but the seventh day is a
01:04:34sabbath of rest a set-apart gathering you do no work it is a sabbath in all your dwellings
01:04:42this has both a negative and a positive here but it says the sabbath is a sabbath of rest that's
01:04:47the
01:04:47positive part do no work is the negative part both pertain to shabbat one's a positive and one is a
01:04:55negative so again you have positive commands regarding shabbat you have negative commands
01:04:59regarding shabbat it's all tied to especially creation but also to the redemption from exodus
01:05:09i'm sorry the redemption from slavery in egypt and most importantly shabbat is a sign between
01:05:15those in covenant with yahweh and yahweh himself now some people especially those of the atheist kind of
01:05:23mindset or the non-believer kind of mindset would say that certain things especially like the sabbath
01:05:31was actually adopted and brought in by the hebrews from other cultures it wasn't original
01:05:39to the bible and it was all made up after the fact but is that actually true well let's look
01:05:46at that
01:05:46real quick because the first glance it may sound plausible or even accurate but what is the truth
01:05:56so here is the uh as you say the uh proposition that some people put forth is that the babylonian
01:06:04day of rest the babylonian sabbath is referred to as shabbat two is what those who invented the bible
01:06:13took from the babylonians and added it to that which they included in their invention which was the bible
01:06:20that's just what that's just what's put forth a lot of times but frederick dalish if you ever heard of
01:06:28him was a prominent german assyriologist in 1902 and he argued that much of the hebrew bible
01:06:34including the creation story the flood narrative and in the context of what we're studying now the sabbath
01:06:40was borrowed from earlier mesopotamian cultures like the babylonians delish and other proponents of
01:06:47the pan-babylonian school pointed to several linguistic and cultural parallels regarding the
01:06:52subject of shabbat now look at this number one is the name they identified a clear linguistic link
01:07:01between the hebrew shabbat and the akkadian shapatu they do sound very similar shabbat and shapatu
01:07:11but it's my contention that that's where the similarities end and stop it's just that one
01:07:17particular point but they tried to make other points as well for instance the full moon in
01:07:23babylonian text the shapatu was the 15th day of the month the full moon it was described as um
01:07:29new libi a day of calming the heart specifically the heart of the gods and you already see the
01:07:37distinction and the difference between shapatu and shabbat another point they make is that this
01:07:44shapatu was regarded as one of the evil days babylonians also observed unlucky or taboo days
01:07:51on the 7th 14th 21st and 28th of the month also another point to bring up as well
01:08:02i don't think delish or these other people who go along the same line make this point or put this
01:08:08forward but the shapatu was only relevant and only applied to certain people of the culture
01:08:14specifically the elites people like the higher class people or the kings and princes etc etc it didn't
01:08:22apply to everyone the lower class people did not get to participate in this and the shapatu was only
01:08:28on the 15th day of the month the middle of the month so does that mean that shabbat was appropriated
01:08:36from the babylonian shapatu no not at all there are clear and important and distinctions and
01:08:45differences between shapatu and the hebrew or the biblical shabbat number one is the lunar versus the
01:08:53weekly occurrence as we just saw the shapatu of babylon was based on the full moon which happens
01:09:01in the middle of a lunar month so it didn't happen every single week like the biblical shabbat does
01:09:09the babylonian shapatu was tied to the lunar cycle once on the 15th of the month yahweh's sabbath is only
01:09:15ever mentioned as a repeating seven day cycle independent of the moon if you'll notice in
01:09:22scripture the hebraic calendar was described in scripture is a lunar solar kind of calendar
01:09:29when it back in creation it says that yahweh placed the lights in the heavens as signs for the muadim
01:09:38for
01:09:38the appointed times and what's one of the signs in heaven is the sun and also the moon so it's
01:09:44not
01:09:44just the moon but also the sun think about it you got to have evening and you got to have
01:09:50morning
01:09:51in order for it to be a day and you count number of days to get to a certain time
01:09:56on the calendar
01:09:56etc etc so it takes both the moon and the sun when we look at biblical kind of things in
01:10:04contrast you
01:10:05have the babylonian shapatu which was only based on the moon especially the full moon happening in
01:10:11the 15th or the middle of the month also the another important distinction is that the shapatu was based
01:10:20on and revolved around superstition whereas the scripture contradicts and speaks against prohibits
01:10:29superstition on many different accounts the babylonian days were considered especially
01:10:34shapatu were considered evil or unlucky however yahweh's sabbath is presented as a holy or set apart day
01:10:42of rest and that we are to consider as a joy or a delight and as spiritual refreshment in addition
01:10:50to
01:10:50physical and mental replenishment as well stark contrast between shabbat and shapatu there's also the
01:11:02universality as we kind of mentioned earlier we saw in creation that the shabbat was part of creation
01:11:09and as such was universal for everyone then we looked at the various accounts of the two commandments
01:11:15both in exodus and in deuteronomy and both times it talks about that you your wife your son your daughter
01:11:23your male servant your female servant your ox your cattle your even your animals everybody was to take
01:11:31the day off the day off on shabbat but the babylon shabbat was not like that and it stands in
01:11:37stark contrast
01:11:38here the babylonian shabbat regulations often only applied to the elite like we mentioned earlier people
01:11:46like the kings and priests especially but also some of the higher class people as well yahweh's sabbath commanded rest
01:11:53for everybody whether it was your slaves your servants the foreigners within your gates the
01:12:00natives those who were natively born israelites the high class low class and even animals we saw that
01:12:06in scriptures for ourselves so yahweh's shabbat is universal it happens every seventh day and it stands
01:12:15in contrast to the babylonian shabbat which was only on the 15th day of the week i'm sorry the 15th
01:12:21day of
01:12:22the month it was considered a superstitious unlucky day and it only applied to a certain sect of the
01:12:29demographics within babylon not everybody so there are very very important distinctions between the
01:12:39biblical shabbat and the babylonian shabbat too so now here's some miscellaneous things that did not
01:12:46deserve its own section in this particular teaching number one the fourth commandment regarding shabbat
01:12:53like i said earlier is the most detailed of all the ten commandments it's the longest and most detailed
01:12:59go check it out for yourself even the no idols commandment the no adultery the honor your father and
01:13:07mother none of those come close to the amount of detail and the length of the fourth commandment on
01:13:14shabbat is the only day of we of the week in scripture to have a label or a name every
01:13:21other
01:13:21day is like the first day second day third day etc etc but the seventh day has the label or
01:13:26the name of
01:13:29shabbat nowadays we think of taking the weekend that's taking time off and resting as a way to take care
01:13:36of
01:13:36us but however that can sometimes border on selfishness if we only think about us taking
01:13:45the specific day of the week that yahweh commands and every time and on every occasion illustrates
01:13:50submission and obedience we don't just take any day of the week we take the one that yahweh tells us
01:13:57to
01:13:57take off and we do what yahweh tells us to do such as not work not kindle to rest up
01:14:05you can spend time
01:14:07with family you can study scripture you can get together with a congregation etc etc and make it a day
01:14:13of joy but don't tend to make it all about you because that would definitely border on the edge of
01:14:21selfishness and that is something we definitely did not see in scripture in order we did not see
01:14:27a commandment be selfish on shabbat in other words so take that for what you will as you consider what
01:14:35to do with you and yours on shabbat we are to conduct ourselves in the image of yahweh as what's
01:14:41referred
01:14:42to in latin as the imitatio day and we see that yahweh observed the seventh day as a sabbath and
01:14:50as an
01:14:50example to us and again the sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath if we want to
01:14:57obey him follow him
01:14:59imitate him we should keep shabbat like he did like he set the example for us and shabbat as scripture
01:15:07tells
01:15:07us is the seventh day of the week the eschatological or the end times vision of universal worship from one
01:15:16sabbath to another situates and places the sabbath at the heart of not just the original creation but
01:15:25also the new creation and the millennium and eternity i guess you could say too here when
01:15:33heaven or the new jerusalem comes down to earth in psalms 92 this is very interesting as well if you
01:15:41ever
01:15:41looked at the book of psalms and chapter 92 and if it's got a title up there it'll title it
01:15:47as a song
01:15:48or a psalm for shabbat or the sabbath day and it reflects both the liturgical and spiritual dimensions
01:15:56of sabbath worship especially for the psalmist but also for the rest of us as well so go read
01:16:03psalm 92 because that is dedicated for shabbat itself so now in summary
01:16:11shabbat is a part of creation not human culture or later legal codes it's not that jewish shabbat
01:16:20it's not from avalonia etc etc shabbat the actual real yahweh's shabbat is a part of creation
01:16:30not human culture or later legal codes shabbat was the first thing to ever be declared as set
01:16:38apart or holy the israelites were re-taught shabbat in the wilderness after the exodus from egypt now
01:16:46i again i fully admit there is little very little evidence about people keeping and observing shabbat
01:16:55before the exodus and even less about a commandment to keep shabbat before the exodus but i do believe
01:17:02that was what was in place we are told to set apart the shabbat by resting and not working again
01:17:10there
01:17:11are various interpretations as to what work is and i do believe that should fall on you and yours to
01:17:18decide for yourself what is or is not work now there's certain examples that we get from scripture but other
01:17:24than that it would be up to you the priests were guided to serve on shabbat even though everyone else
01:17:32rests and we this is getting ahead of ourselves but in the brit hadashah yeshua does say that the
01:17:38priests profaned the sabbath by working but yet are considered blameless so the priests were working
01:17:46on shabbat but it was in service to yahweh the biblical sabbath stands in stark contrast to the
01:17:54babylonian shabbat and we went over various evidence for that there are stark differences
01:18:00between shabbat and shabbat so no shabbat did not come from shabbat but shabbat may very well have come
01:18:09from shabbat ever notice how when people try to throw mud on the bible they always say that or always
01:18:17try to make the claim that certain parts of the bible came from other places such as shabbat coming from
01:18:24shabbat or you know the story of jesus or yeshua coming from mithras but they never say that these
01:18:32other cultures stole it from the bible it is never the other way around you ever notice that
01:18:38interesting anyways shabbat is a temporal sign or a sign in time of the covenant between us and yahweh
01:18:48it's one of the signs because there's other signs as well but shabbat is a sign of the covenant
01:18:55for those who are in covenant between us and yahweh and that's just the god honest truth
