00:00At first, I was nervous about how I would be perceived
00:03with a very daring haircut,
00:06but then I realized I do not care
00:09what other people think about what I look like,
00:12and I never have.
00:16I'm Juliana, and today I'm getting a mixie cut.
00:21I'm getting a mixie cut because I think that
00:23this is going to be a big change,
00:25and I've been waiting for a big change to come in my life.
00:31Just cutting off like an inch or two wasn't enough,
00:33but I was ready to actually cut it all.
00:36So I've been a vintage collector for five years now,
00:41ever since I moved to LA.
00:42I love to style people,
00:44and I will dress people so crazy and so fun,
00:48but my personal style is pretty tame.
00:51I think that this cut is going to,
00:55you know, just make me go wild.
00:59I'm Polly Seidel.
01:01I'm a hairstylist, and I specialize in razor cuts.
01:04A mixie is a hybrid of a mullet and a pixie.
01:09It's characterized by shorter top,
01:12and then soft tendrils around the neck.
01:16The thing that I love most about 70s style shags
01:20is just that they're effortlessly cool.
01:23It seems that every decade it comes back.
01:26It's just like a classic cool rock and roll vibe.
01:30It's so good to see you.
01:32It's been so long.
01:33Yeah.
01:34Polly, it's so good to be back.
01:36Oh my gosh, I've missed you.
01:37So I think I want to get the mixie.
01:40I love that cut for you.
01:42Yeah?
01:42Yes.
01:43I think it's going to be absolutely gorgeous.
01:45You can add fullness at the top and frame your bone structure
01:49and bring out your best features.
01:51I'm excited.
01:53Thank you so much.
01:56To get this style, I have the client washed first,
02:02so the hair is clean, and a nice conditioner,
02:05and then some type of product to put on the hair under the razor
02:11to keep the hair lubricated because it's really important
02:13when razor cutting to keep the hair evenly damp
02:15and keep it lubricated.
02:17And then basically you identify how long you'd
02:20like the longer tendril pieces to be.
02:23And what I do is, depending on how thick the person's hair is,
02:26starting in the back, I take out a lot of vertical weight
02:30with the straight razor, and that opens up the hair
02:33so it can have movement.
02:35And then I start working my way up, and as I go up,
02:39I create shorter layers, and they're very scooped out,
02:42so it goes from short to the longest length,
02:45which are those tendrils.
02:46So then I would go into the front and shape the bangs,
02:50maybe make some pieces shorter,
02:52scoop out, and carve out the tendrils
02:54that you want around the face and the pieciness.
02:57And then lastly, you cut the top by basically pulling it up
03:02in vertical sections, taking out weight,
03:04maybe carving it out from short to long
03:07so you have some little flips.
03:09And then basically, you bring the back up
03:12to meet those top layers and just take it straight off.
03:16So with this cut, it can be left to dry on its own
03:21with the right product.
03:22Today I used some round brush to basically
03:27directionally flip out some of the pieces and have them
03:30around the face, just a little bit more curved,
03:32and also to get a little more volume around the top.
03:35And that's pretty much how I do it.
03:37All right, Juliana, are you ready to see your mixi cut?
03:41I'm so ready.
03:42Awesome.
03:42Let's do it.
03:43All right, here's the big reveal.
03:45Oh my god.
03:47This is amazing.
03:49This is amazing.
03:51I love it on you.
03:53I mean, just the way it's framing your face and your features.
03:57I just love it.
03:58This is beautiful.
03:59I had no idea this was possible.
04:01Like, this is incredible.
04:02Oh, I'm so glad you love it.
04:05I really do, too.
04:06I feel like it just fits you like it was made for you.
04:12I feel so good about this.
04:15I'm just kind of over the moon right now.
04:18Like, I can't believe that my hair could do this.
04:21Like, it was so long and flat and lifeless.
04:25And now it's so full of volume, energy, life.
04:30Like, I can just play with it.
04:32Like, put it up, you know, put some, like, texturizer in it.
04:36Just kind of, like, ruffle it around and just kind of go.
04:40The maintenance on this cut is really easy.
04:46This cut is meant to evolve and grow out.
04:49So you really don't have to keep it up unless you really want to.
04:54Some people really enjoy watching it evolve over, like, three to six months and it becomes
04:59something different.
05:00It doesn't grow out and get heavy because of all the weight removal with the razor and
05:05all of the cool interior pieces that are installed.
05:08So that's really cool.
05:11A lot of the times I've, like, kind of, like, hid my head or put my hair away, you know.
05:17Now it's all part of the look.
05:19It's going to bring everything out.
05:21It's going to just make everything come together with, I don't know, just so much more vibrance
05:28and just a lot more energy to everything.
