00:04I never really viewed wigs as an option or an alternative for my hair issues.
00:10Back in the day, it kind of just seemed taboo.
00:12But now, I mean, it's all over Instagram.
00:14I'm hopping on the bandwagon.
00:16Hi, my name is Carly, and today I'm getting a custom wig.

00:22So growing up, I had these luscious, beautiful curls.
00:26Everyone was envious of them.
00:28And as I got older, I burned my hair with straighteners, curlers.
00:32I got perms.
00:34I got all these chemical treatments.
00:36It took me all these years to finally accept my own hair.
00:39I told myself that I would let it grow out and just live the natural life.
00:44And then I started experiencing hair loss.
00:48It's a very emotional thing, and it's really taken a toll on my self-esteem.
00:52To have it be falling out, it just feels really unfair and really frustrating.
00:57After nights of crying and crying and, you know, seeing all this hair fall out in the shower,
01:02I am getting a custom wig today.
01:04I'm also very eager to learn just the general tips and tricks for maintaining a wig.
01:09I know that they're expensive, and I am not trying to this up.
01:13I'm just ready to look bomb.
01:18I'm going to put her hair into two ponytails and braid them down.
01:19Okay, so you're here today to get your custom wig.
01:21Yes.
01:21My name is Daily Green, and I am the owner of H2 Salon Brooklyn.
01:25You have beautiful curly hair.
01:27I love it.
01:28The color is beautiful.
01:29The curl is gorgeous.
01:31What we're going to do first is get your practice for the wig.
01:33Okay.
01:34And then we'll put the wig on.
01:35Yeah, I'm so excited.
01:37Yay.
01:39We are going to put her hair into two ponytails and braid them down.
01:44And then after that, we're going to take the two pigtails and crisscross them and pin them
01:50very gently in the back of her head so that she feels comfortable.
01:54I do not like tension.
01:55I don't like tightness.
01:57And I don't think for her hair texture that there needs to be this braid down that needs to happen.
02:02I also want her to be able to take it off and take her hair out and wash it and
02:07then put it back
02:08in when she wants to do it again.
02:10How I got into making custom wigs was this was about 10 years ago.
02:14There were a lot of women transitioning out of relaxers into curly hair.
02:18And instead of doing weaves, I thought a safer approach would be to do a wig.
02:23Easy enough.
02:24And now all you do is pretty flat and it's close to your head.
02:28Okay.
02:28And you have two wigs.
02:29That's really good.
02:30Cool.
02:30But you want, remember those clips that kind of spin back before when you were little?
02:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:34You can use those two.
02:35I can do this.
02:36Yeah.
02:36That's easy.
02:36Pretty easy, right?
02:37Yeah.
02:38I made a wig for Carly and I colored it for her.
02:41We are going to put the wig onto Carly's head.
02:45Here is your custom wig.

02:48The texture matches your hair perfectly.

02:50What I want you to do is take both of your fingers at the temples of your head.
02:54Okay.
02:55So you're going to kind of hold this with the tip of your finger and I'm going to pull this
02:59back.
03:00So I didn't put a wig cap on you only because wig caps are a little bit warm and hot.
03:04And also too, I feel like they're made out of a synthetic material nylon.
03:08And so it's like wearing a pair of pantyhose on your head all day.
03:10And I feel like the tension from that rubbing can take away your hairline.
03:15Yeah, we don't need that.
03:16No.
03:17So this is just the lace base.
03:19I'm going to cut the wig and frame her face so that it really looks like it's her hair.
03:25One of the most important aspects of getting a wig is getting it cut to fit the person's face
03:30and their style.
03:32Sometimes wigs come and they're too long.
03:34Sometimes wigs come and they're too heavy in the front.
03:37So it's important to really have a bespoke wig experience and curtail it to the need of the client.
03:44After it's been cut, I'm going to take the wig off of her.
03:47I'm going to wet it down.
03:52I'm going to dry it under the dryer on its own.
03:55And then once it's completely dry, I'm going to put the wig back onto Carly's head.
04:01I'm going to style it curly so that it looks just like her hair.
04:08And she's all done.

04:14Oh my god.
04:18It's so natural.
04:19Like it looks like my hair.
04:21It really does.
04:22It's beautiful.
04:24It has all the volume that I don't have anymore and I want it.
04:29How do you feel about the color?
04:30It's beautiful.
04:31Okay.
04:32You know, my hair is damaged and I don't want to put color in it.
04:35So this is perfect.
04:36It looks like I was sun-kissed.

04:38It's gorgeous.
04:39When wearing a wig, I think that it's important to take care of your hair underneath.
04:43Carly is a beautiful young woman who is experiencing hair loss.
04:47And I do understand that it is a personal issue that she has to grapple with every single day.
04:52So doing this wig for her has been very pleasurable for me.
04:57And I'm so excited that we found texture that matches hers and enhances what she already has.
