00:00It's demo day.
00:03How about I get this thing on?
00:08My name is Bea, and I'm a video producer and a professional organizer.
00:12During COVID-19, I'm sheltering in place at my parents' house.
00:15There it is.
00:16Turns out, it's a great time to work on a project I've been putting off for 10 years.
00:20Let me show you what I'm talking about.
00:22This is the pantry.
00:24My parents bought this 19th century farmhouse 25 years ago,
00:28and this is the one room that hasn't been updated.
00:30The most obvious problem is that most of the shelves are way too far back,
00:34and they're difficult to get to, which means that items don't get put away,
00:37and they just start piling up year after year.
00:40So, what's actually here?
00:42Wrapping paper, holiday, miscellaneous, kitchen, basket, serving ware, ironing board.
00:46Who knows what's living back there?
00:48The problem with the space is the structure of it.
00:51You have to dip your head, or you're gonna hit your head there.
00:54You have to get down to access these back shelves,
00:59and then there's just not really a method to where things are going.
01:03I need to redesign this space so that it's actually functional.
01:07Things need to be visible. They need to be organized.
01:10It's time to unpack the pantry.
01:12Something that has never been done the entire time we've lived here.
01:25Pulled out one of those shelves.
01:27What have we got here?
01:29Subway Series poster from 2000.
01:31Hmm, how much is this worth?
01:37This is everything.
01:39Some fun finds from the day.
01:41Old artwork also.
01:44Juice box straw.
01:46Clearly part of a Pop Rocks packet.
01:49Maybe someone's eating it in there, hiding it.
01:51Treasures from the closet.
01:57Okay.
01:59Closet is finally empty, and we can really see there's a little bit more work to be done than what
02:05I originally thought.
02:06We may have to do some work here in repairing some of these walls.
02:10Floorboards from the 1800s.
02:12So I'm gonna bring in someone who knows a little bit about design.
02:15And that is my dad. He's an architect.
02:18Dad, we do a custom shelf for there.
02:23That's just a little bit deeper.
02:25Back here, probably get rid of the plaster.
02:28It's a little messier job, but this isn't really doing much.
02:33Piece of trim there.
02:35This is sort of unrelated.
02:37This is the nature of old houses.
02:39It's demo day.
02:43Let's try that again.
02:45All right.
02:45I'm taking off this wall.
02:48It's broken at the top.
02:49It's broken at the bottom.
02:50We're gonna replace it.
02:51Here we go.
02:57Found a coupon.
03:02Before fiberglass, they used horse hair in the plaster.
03:05So that's what you're seeing right there.
03:07And there.
03:08Just finished demoing the back wall.
03:10A little bit of progress every day.
03:12It's day three, and we're cutting studs,
03:15and finally putting in the sheet rock.
03:19Measure twice, cut once.
03:20It's never been so true.
03:23When something is off by an eighth of an inch.
03:28It's frustrating.
03:29This is the cutting station here.
03:31Clamping these boards down so they don't move.
03:38All the studs are in.
03:40We're gonna have some new walls.
03:44A little tight.
03:45Just a little bit.
04:01It's Friday, and I thought that we would be done in five days, but I'm surrounded by tools.
04:11We have all the walls up.
04:13Everything's spackled.
04:14Next step is to prime.
04:20Let's talk about the floorboards.
04:22They're from the 1850s.
04:24We've talked about potentially sanding them and staining them.
04:28Painting them.
04:29Covering them with linoleum.
04:31But my vote is to keep the floorboards.
04:34Today was a lot of thinking about the layout of the space.
04:38It's really tricky because of this low ceiling.
04:41And I know from before that anything that was put in the way back was just awesome.
04:47With the new design, I really want to bring things to the front and make everything accessible.
04:51We're also trying to work with the shelving that we currently have.
04:55Some limitations bring out some good creativity.
04:58So I've just been moving these pieces around today.
05:01Trying to see what layouts feel the best.
05:05Okay, it's dinner time.
05:10Yeah.
05:23So I have here...
05:25Ow.
05:26I'm thinking this could be used as a counter against the back wall.
05:33I want to try to see if it'll even work in the space first.
05:57Nice.
05:58Perfect fit.
05:59It is day 10.
06:01Everything's been installed, painted, nailed up, painted again.
06:06It's finally time to organize the closet.
06:09This is the moment I've been waiting for.
06:11The reason I started this project.
06:13Let's go.
06:13It's all gotta go back in there.
06:20All of the ribbons.
06:23I found these extra sticks.
06:25And I'm using them to organize all these spools of ribbon.
06:29So I'm just kind of color coordinating them.
06:35I found these bins outside.
06:39If I organize my holiday, it's a better solution.
06:43Because then you can just pull out what you need.
06:51Bags.
06:52Too many bags.
06:53What can we do?
06:59A desk organizer becomes storage for gift bags.
07:02And I've put the bags that I use for everyday errands right by the door.
07:09And the iron fits perfectly.
07:11So I'm done.
07:12Let's just remember where we started.
07:15It's time to show my parents their new pantry.
07:18Come on, hun.
07:20Wow.
07:22Wow.
07:23That is a total remake.
07:26Well done, V.
07:27Yeah, the shelves make great use of that space.
07:30Wow.
07:30This is amazing.
07:32I guess I can come in and not hit my head now.
07:34Like digging through everything.
07:37I love that tabletop.
07:39I love the way you kept the character of the room.
07:43We've got these beautiful wide plank floors.
07:45I love that.
07:46That was a really good idea.
07:47So you're happy with it?
07:48Gee, I love it.
07:49It's so good.
07:51And all this during quarantine.
07:53Thank you, Bibi.
07:54Well done.
07:55It's really great.
07:56Well done.
07:57That was fun.
07:58Yeah.
07:58That's all for this episode.
08:00I think we've all spent enough time underneath the stairs.
08:04And until quarantine is over, stay home and stay safe.
08:09Geez.
