00:00Hi guys, I'm Nika.
00:01My name is Kim.
00:02My name is Amber.
00:03My name is Patti.
00:03My name is Kayvon.
00:04And this is how I style my baby hair.
00:06So I have a wide array of products right here.
00:09I have this Gorilla Snot.
00:11It's really, really fantastic.
00:13I'm going to be out all day, and I'm really
00:15going to need my hair to stay in place.
00:18It's called Snot for a reason, because it truly just
00:21has a yellowish consistency, and it's really goofy.
00:26I found this Perfect Edges Edge Control by Argan Oil,
00:29and I think they were friends.
00:30I like the hold.
00:31I like that it doesn't look really wet or jelly or greasy.
00:35It kind of just gives you the amount of hold that you need.
00:39I put Carol's Daughter Healthy Hair Butter all through my hair.
00:43It's just to keep these baby hairs healthy.
00:45I mean, we are always brushing them,
00:48and we always want good edges now, don't we?
00:51Then I follow it up with some Miss Jessie's Curly Custard,
00:55and it just really gets your hair ready for your baby hair
00:59movement.
01:00I then follow it up with Eco Styler.
01:03Eco Styler, which is a girl's best friend.
01:05Even if I do nothing else, this is daily.
01:09I have here some Eco Styler Gel.
01:12It's got the Argan Oil in it.
01:14I really like this one because it seems to work better
01:17with my hair texture for some reason.
01:19Original Eco Styler Gel, I don't use any type of oils.
01:21I just use this plain because I do add this, the Got To Be Gel.
01:25So I've learned to just use the both of them to make my baby hairs slayed.
01:30Then for styling, I have toothbrush, just to, you know, leave the edges down.
01:35Good old faithful hair, honey.
01:37And no, I do not brush my teeth with it, no.
01:40Toothbrush is the most important part if you want these baby hairs to be slayed, ladies.
01:44It's small enough so it gives you the control you need.
01:47It's easy to hold.
01:48I've used toothbrushes before as well and they are very good.
01:52However, baby girl, she holds me down so I don't really need anything else, you know?
01:56I also have a satin scarf here, which is really essential to sleep in,
02:00to set your styles for everything.
02:02And then I like to put just a long stock around my edges
02:06because I really think it gives them just that extra, extra firm hold that I know my naps need.
02:13I pretty much just start brushing down very gently just to see who shows up.
02:18And I pretty much just try to brush them in the direction in which they grow.
02:22I actually apply the gel all through my baby hair before I start with the toothbrush.
02:28When you are using this Eco Styler gel and you've already applied your face, honey,
02:34don't put too much on there because you will mess up your face.
02:37I like to start from the middle of my head as proposed to the sides.
02:41And I just go into a circle of motion. It's all about the flick of the wrist.
02:44So I basically just, you know, took the little snot on my fingers and just kind of
02:49wisp it through my hairs. And then I'm going to take my brush,
02:53and this is when I'm really going to start shaping them.
02:56You will use your toothbrush to swoop around your finger.
03:00I like to add a little bit of funk to it.
03:02So see, I'm following the pattern and they just naturally start to swoop up a little bit.
03:07So right now, the gorilla snot is drying. So I'm just going to take the sock and I'm just going
03:13to wrap it
03:13around my head. I do this so my baby hairs are really flat and laid down.
03:18I'm also just going to go ahead and wrap my whole head with my scarf.
03:21And you know, scarves are just great because they give you a nice little wave pattern in your hair.
03:26Once I have these guys laid, I like to pull out my little sides here.
03:31So one thing I like to do in the corners of my hair is just to dip a bit of
03:36the EcoSella gel,
03:37just to give my edges a little curl. So just to define the corners.
03:41I'm going to go ahead and just take off my scarf.
03:45Then we can see, look at how smooth. And there we have it. Nice, laid, wavy.
03:54So that's how I lay my baby hair.
03:57When I grew up, straight hair was the thing. And I didn't have that.
04:01I had to beg my mom literally to let me straighten my hair. And I did it to the point
04:07where it made
04:08my natural curls unhealthy. So I started getting relaxers at a very young age to try to straighten
04:13my hair out. That went from about age 8 to 19 and pretty much burned all my baby hair off.
04:20And it
04:20wasn't until about two to three years after growing the relaxer and the chemical out that my baby hair
04:25started coming back. So I was like, okay, and I'm gonna let my baby hair rock.
04:28My relationship with my baby hair was actually a love-hate relationship. I was trying to style it
04:33like everyone else did. And I was noticing that it didn't work for me. And I was like, you know
04:38what, maybe I just don't have baby hair. I mean, it wasn't that I didn't have baby hair. It's that
04:42I
04:42just didn't know how it was supposed to fit me. So when I figured that out, you know, that was
04:49the turning point for me. I made it the sake of trying to straighten my baby hairs and then like
04:55laying them down with wax. Really, like once you learn how to style your baby hairs in their natural
05:00state, then like the world is yours. And you can really just like conquer them. And when it comes
05:04to baby hairs, I was always told, you know, that people can't lay down their baby hairs because their
05:08hair is thick. If there is a will, there is a way. It's a test and it's a trial. Like
05:12you have to do it
05:13over and over and over again. You can do it. You can do whatever you want. Like it's just
05:17another element of like the culture. Like, hey, like Daniella, baby hairs are looking great today.
05:23Like, you know, she took an extra 10 minutes this morning just to make sure that she looked fabulous.
05:27So definitely just recognizing all the like little efforts that we do and also lifting each other up.
05:34Now that I'm able to accept my hair and my hair and I are just like homies, I really truly
05:41think we
05:41all have good hair because our hair is what is supposed to be on us and it's what looks best
05:47on us.
05:47You know, in my opinion, baby hair is kind of like dimples and a big butt. It's kind of like
05:52if you have
05:53it, that's what's up. If you don't have it, it's okay too. I don't have a dimples or a big
05:59butt,
05:59but I do have baby hair, so I celebrate that.
06:02Thank you so much for watching me lay my baby hair and walking with me through my natural hair
06:07journey. We'll see you next time. Bye guys. Thanks so much for watching. If you have any comments,
