00:01Well, the latest is that we are waiting for this 16-year-old boy to appear in court.
00:06That's expected this afternoon on these two charges, which police announced this morning
00:11they had laid one count of murder in relation to his mother, one count of attempt to unlawfully
00:17kill in relation to his sister.
00:19It all stems from an incident that unfolded yesterday morning in a suburb of Bentley,
00:25just south of Perth.
00:26Police were initially called to a home where they found the body of a 35-year-old woman
00:31who police say is the boy's mother.
00:33There was then a separate crime scene that was established about 600 metres away
00:38where passers-by had found a 12-year-old girl with serious injuries.
00:42That's believed to be his sister.
00:44Passers-by gave her first aid before she was treated by paramedics and then rushed to hospital
00:50where she remains.
00:51The police commissioner this morning saying she is being treated for serious injuries.
00:56But she is being supported and is surrounded by family.
01:00Speaking generally to the media this morning, he said that police were seeing an increase
01:05in violence by adolescents, particularly against their parents.
01:10But understanding the scale of that problem is a bit difficult because many parents are reluctant
01:15to report that to police and to get them involved.
01:20Nonetheless, in this case, he says the boy was known to police and that really this is the most tragic
01:26outcome
01:26and really the end result of a scenario when support that could have been provided to a young person like
01:33this
01:35either wasn't provided or wasn't able to help avoid this tragedy.
01:39One of WA's leading juvenile advocates, a man by the name of Gerry Georgiatis, has told the ABC that this
01:48boy had been failed by authorities.
01:50He had been involved. He was aware of this case and this family and said that it was a case
01:57where really authorities should have intervened earlier.
02:00Those alarm bells should have been ringing, but they either didn't or what they did wasn't sufficient.
02:05He's described the family as living in crushing poverty with profound unmet needs.
02:12Now, the Premier was out this morning. He was asked about whether this 16-year-old boy was involved with
02:19child protection
02:20or whether he was involved in the youth justice system. He wouldn't be drawn on any of that,
02:25but this is what he had to say when he was asked about the ability of those systems to care
02:30for young people generally.
02:32We are confident with our child protection system. It's an important part of ensuring we keep our young people safe,
02:39and we will obviously always take the opportunity to learn from experiences.
02:44Whether this is part of that experience, I don't know, but yesterday someone died,
02:49and I think at this point in time our thoughts should just be on those issues.
02:53Mr Georgiatis is calling for a full independent investigation into the support that was provided to this 16-year-old
