00:21After six days of musical instruction, mentorship and personal development,
00:26the 26 young men and women proudly showcased what they had learned at the third annual President's Pan Camp.
00:34Twenty-three of the participants had no prior experience with the steel pan before entering the program.
00:40As it is not merely a learn-to-play-a-song-and-leave type of camp.
00:46No, no, no.
00:47Our daily schedule reflected a deep commitment to holistic development, as I will now share with you.
00:54The morning sessions were dedicated to the core teaching and learning of the music,
01:00literally note-by-note, with warm-up and wrist-strengthening exercises to jumpstart the teaching-learning process.
01:09These musical sessions were paired with powerful motivational sessions led by our educators
01:15and were intentionally designed to support the socio-emotional development of our campus,
01:23equipping them with life skills, confidence, some core values and resilience.
01:30Education Minister Dr. Michael Dowlath lauded the initiative
01:34as he stressed the importance of all-rounded development of the nation's youth.
01:40This is why the revitalization of arts and culture education remains an important priority of the Ministry of Education.
01:49We recognize that music, visual arts, theatre, dance and creative expressions are not extras within education.
01:58They are essential components of a well-rounded education.
02:02First gentleman, His Excellency Cohen Garcia, SC, believes the values and the lessons learned in the pan camp
02:10provide a blueprint to help strengthen our national development.
02:15In the pan yard, the arranger has power, but he does not use it to erase every other voice.
02:23The section leader corrects, but he does not strip any player of his dignity.
02:28Rules do exist, but they all serve the music.
02:34So too must it be in the wider society.
02:37Authority must act for and it must serve a purpose higher than itself.
02:43The same standard that applies in the pan yard must be made to apply to every office
02:49and to every institution which carries authority.
