00:03What began as a Chalo Sansat protest has now escalated into an all-out war of sorts on the streets

00:12You see protesters, you see the police.
00:15There are clashes at least two to three places where we reported in a very serious condition.
00:23What is happening as of now?
00:26Protests continue at Jantar Mantar.
00:28The fast of Sonam Vangchuk continues inside the Sabdarjung Hospital.
00:33But the progress at this hour is that J.P. Nadda of the BJP has met with the two spokespersons
00:41of the Kokrojanta Party.
00:45A formal letter of demands has been given to him.
00:50The demands are three.
00:52Number one, the resignation of the Education Minister Dharmeen Dutradhan.
00:56Number two, release of Sonam Vangchuk.
01:02Give him the freedom back.
01:03Let him move to a hospital of his choice or join the protest as he'd like.
01:09And number three, one crore of compensation to the families of those who have lost their kids who had committed
01:19suicide because of need.
01:21With these three demands now, the government is sitting.
01:25They've got a call to take on what will happen next.
01:29The ball, the Kokrojanta Party says, is in the court of the government.
01:36That and much more, all aspects of that story on how it unfolded hour by hour through the day is
01:43what I will cover over the next one hour.
01:45First up, let me tell you what else is making news across the country.
01:50A massive CJP protest rocked Central Delhi as thousands attempted a Sunset Chalo march.
01:56Over examination paper leaks, protesters pushed towards parliament, breaching barricades at several points as clashes broke out with security personnel.
02:04Police used lathees and also fired tear gas to contain the crowds, with tear gas continuing to be used as
02:11protesters advance towards the high security parliament zone.
02:15Heavy security remains in place across Chantar Mantar, Raisina Hills, Parliament Road as well and very recently, we've been told,
02:24around Cannot Place as well.
02:26Amidst the continuing confrontation on the streets, sources tell India today that the CJP delegation held talks with J.P.
02:34Nadda.
02:35The CJP has come out to say that they were waiting for the conversation from 12 o'clock in the
02:40morning.
02:41Those pictures have just come out.
02:45Monsoon session, meanwhile, of parliament has begun on a rather stormy note, with both houses facing repeated adjournments on day
02:52one.
02:52Opposition MPs protested over the paper leak issue and alleged temple donation theft, with slogans, placards and protests in Lok
03:01Sabha.
03:01Raj Sabha too witnessed disruption after Malikar Gunkharjge raised the paper leak Rao.
03:07Amid chaos, the government introduced a Supreme Court judge's amendment bill as Prime Minister before the starting of the session
03:13called for constructive decisions.
03:16Talking about the Prime Minister, he took a wild swipe at leader of the opposition, Rahul Gandhi, while praising India's
03:23growing private sector.
03:25Highlighting Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram 1 milestone, the Prime Minister pointed out that average age of the team behind the achievement
03:32is just 28.
03:33He then quipped that he was talking about 28-year-old youngsters, not 46, make about 56-year-olds.
03:44Madhya Pradesh is moving towards a Uniform Civil Code, with State Cabinet unanimously approving the draft UCC bill.
03:51The legislation is set to be introduced in the Assembly today.
03:55Now, this makes it the fourth state in the country to actually implement or on its way to implement the
04:03Uniform Civil Code.
04:06TMK MLA has been arrested from his residence over alleged defamatory threatening remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.
04:15The action follows the complaint of TBK leaders after the MLA allegedly threatened Vijay during a public meeting.
04:22We are told that the DMK has called the action taken against his MLA illegal.
04:30Karnataka is staring at a possible drought situation after one of its weakest starts of the southwest monsoon in decades.
04:39June ended with a staggering 42% rainfall deficit, making it the fourth driest June in 50 years.
04:4821 of the state's 31 districts are facing severe rainfall deficiency, hitting the sowing season, reservoir levels and livestock as
04:56well.
04:56The government has now ordered districts to prepare drought contingency plans, even as farmers await the return of the rain.
05:05Internationally, the U.S.-Iran conflict has escalated further.
05:08U.S. struck the under-construction nuclear power plant.
05:13No radiation leak was reported, we are told.
05:15The U.S. has also targeted the Abadan House of Iran's oldest oil refinery.
05:21Meanwhile, an American service member was killed in North Iraq during the controlled detonation of ordinance from the downed Iranian

05:34Britain has a new Prime Minister.
05:36Labour leader Andy Borham has officially been declared the new UK Prime Minister after Keith Stammer tendered his designation to
05:44King Charles at Buckingham Palace.
05:46Now, Borham has become Britain's fifth Prime Minister in just four years.
05:51His immediate priorities, we are told, is tackling the cost-of-living crisis, boosting housing and scrapping plans for a
05:57government-issued digital ID.
06:02And the Drugs Comptroller General of India approved the KEDA Biopharmaceutical India's dengue vaccine.
06:09It is for the prevention of dengue in individuals aged between 4 to 60 years under the new Drugs and
06:15Clinical Trials rule.
06:17It is the first dengue vaccine approved in India and can be used in individuals regardless of previous dengue exposure
06:22without the need of pre-vaccination testing.
06:34We are getting reports of what exactly was the memorandum that CJP gave to BJP's JP Nadda.
06:45We are told that there were three core demands, one being the resignation and sacking of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Education
06:54Minister, immediately.
06:56We are told the youth, it goes on to say that the youth of this country believes that Mr. Pradhan
07:00has completely failed in this capacity of Education Minister.
07:05The other demand is for the release of Sonam Vangchuk.
07:07And the third one is one crore compensation for all need aspirants who committed suicide.
07:16Piyush Mishra joins us for the very latest on the story.
07:19Piyush, the Kokrojanda Party has been very clear in their demand.
07:23They want all three.
07:26At the moment, what are we hearing as a response from the government?
07:32Well, remember, Sonam, that the government has released a small statement.
07:37Union Minister JP Nadda had released a statement and he has mentioned that during the morning,
07:42a delegation from CJP had approached the government to put forth their views before the government.
07:47And after listening to that, at around 11.50, the talks began with the CJP spokesperson.
07:53And at 4.00 p.m., a memorandum was submitted by CJP spokesperson to JP Nadda.
07:58In that memorandum, the CJP spokesperson have demanded the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Narmayen Tafadhan.
08:06At the same time, they are also demanding that compensation of rupees one for all should be given to the
08:11family members of the youth,
08:15officials who committed suicide due to the paper leak in the youth examination.
08:20And third, one will be immediately said, Sonam, Longchuk.
08:23Now, what they're told is that the government has requested the CJP protesters to maintain a cordial environment and end
08:31their protest.
08:32Remember that the protest is going on for the last many, many days.
08:35The CJP has been demanding the immediate resignation of the Darmayen Tafadhan.
08:39And what we're also going to understand is that as these meetings are going on, there was a meeting of
08:46Union Education Minister with Union from Islamistra.
08:49And this meeting went on for around four hours in the chamber from Islamistra.
08:56So, three of the meetings are happening.
08:57We'll have to wait to know how the government is going to deal with the situation and when will this
09:02deadlock come to an end between the protesters and government.
09:06All right. So, fair to say at this point that talks are underway.
09:12CJP has met with the government given their memorandum, given their demands, which are three.
09:19JP Nadda is having parallel conversations with Home Minister to understand which way this will be going forward.
09:25That is where we are at.
09:28But let me give you a full glimpse of how the day went.
09:33It's been a day of showdown, both inside Parliament and outside it.
09:38After a month of anticipation, protests passed.
09:41The Kokoro Janta Party staged its biggest show of strength yet.
09:44So big that the government, we are told, had to be forced to sit down with them, acknowledge them, listen
09:52to them.
09:53You see what happened.
09:54JP Nadda met with them.
09:55As we speak, the protests continue.
09:59Sonam Bakchuk continues his fast under what followers call his detention at Sabdarjung Hospital and talks.
10:06We are told, have happened.
10:09The outcome, we do not know.
10:12But here is how the day progressed hour by hour.
10:16Because on social media, there are lots of claims, counterclaims, fact checks happening.
10:22But this is how it went hour by hour.
10:26It began at 6 o'clock in the morning with tight security ring thrown all around Jantar Mantar.
10:31We got shots of wielding, of welding really of all the barricades happening to ensure that nobody is able to
10:38leave Jantar Mantar, walk towards Parliament.
10:41Half an hour later, Sonam Bakchuk posted from Sabdarjung Hospital, saying his fast could end today if the government showed
10:50accountability.
10:51He asked for an assurance from MPs that they would raise the issue in Parliament.
10:57But interestingly, for the first time, Sonam Bakchuk did not mention in his demands resignation of the Education Minister.
11:09It was a climb down, a sign that a possible talk could actually happen.
11:16And then, by quarter to nine, drone visuals from around that time showed that massive crowds had already gathered at
11:25Jantar Mantar.
11:29Alright, let's just cut across to hear from Saurabh Das of the Kokru Jantar Party.
11:35Okay.
11:40Alright, let me go back and try and play that soundbite for you again.
11:44I'll come back and restart that timeline.
11:46But before that, let me just quickly see if we can re-cue that and bring you the latest update
11:53which is coming to us from Saurabh Das of the Kokru Jantar Party.
12:01Okay, our producers are trying to queue that up for you.
12:04I'll put it out the minute it is ready.
12:05But let's go back to the timeline, right?
12:09We told you, Sonam Bangchuk in the morning gave out his letter and for the first time did not mention
12:16peace talks.
12:16And by quarter to nine, we had drone visuals coming in from Jantar Mantar which showed there was a massive
12:24gathering scene all across.
12:27All roads that came to Jantar Mantar were chocko-block with people.
12:31It is at the same time that we started getting reports that there are metro stations which have been restricted.
12:41We were told that the metro stations leading to Jantar Mantar have been restricted.
12:46We were also told that there were some connectivity issues noticed around Jantar Mantar.
12:51At the same time, Wang Chuk's wife moved to court again, this time in front of a larger bench to
12:57let Wang Chuk be in a hospital of his choice.
13:00She had gone to the high court yesterday in front of a single bench.
13:03She today approached a larger bench to make her voice heard.
13:08Within an hour, political leaders started arriving at the protest site.
13:12The first to come was MP Chandrasekhar Azad reaching Jantar Mantar.
13:16Then there was Prakash Raj who joined him over there.
13:20Azad pledged to raise the protesters' concerns inside the parliament.
13:24And right around that time is when we heard of the first flashpoint.
13:29At 10.20, police went on to use Lathi charge to control crowd as protesters clashed with security personnel.
13:38Those shots that you see.
13:40That was the first one at 10.20.
13:44The Kokrojanta party maintained that talks with the government were still underway even as the protest continued.
13:49They said they were hearing for the first time that the government wants to speak.
13:53And close to noon is when we started hearing of the action shifting to parliament.
13:59Remember, it's day one of the monsoon session.
14:02Samajwadi party leaders and MPs there led by Nimpal Yadav marched from parliament to Jantar Mantar.
14:08So there were two marches happening.
14:10From Jantar Mantar to parliament and from parliament to Jantar Mantar.
14:14Again, what the Samajwadi party is saying is that the government is refusing to have a dialogue.
14:20Meanwhile, again we got shots.
14:22Drone shots again from Jantar Mantar saying that crowds were charged up.
14:28And they continued to swell.
14:30There were pictures and videos coming in from different on other aspects and social media handles as well
14:35to say that more and more people were coming in.
14:38And by 10 past 12, Vraisina Road itself was blocked.
14:42Remember I told you protests were happening.
14:44Both sides were moving towards that cross section.
14:47And by 10 past 12, Vraisina Road itself got blocked.
14:50With large numbers gathering near the Lee Meridian roundabout as well.
14:55And CJP mobilization grew.
14:58At 12.20, Vanchu croaked another letter.
15:02Again from his hospital bed in Saptarjang.
15:06Saying that he's feeling pretty good today.
15:09He's feeling fine.
15:11And he would like to be released.
15:13He wrote a please in that letter to the government.
15:17And then suddenly things started changing around 1 p.m.
15:22Security around parliament was reinforced at 1 p.m.
15:25With all access routes heavily guarded.
15:27You see those victuals?
15:29Security persons were moved in.
15:31We saw paramilitary also just rush through the gates, try to close the gates of the parliament as well.
15:37And minutes later, the situation had escalated sharply.
15:42Just before one protest reached the parliament gate, where they were met with tear gas shelling, heavy lathe charge as
15:50well.
15:52By 1.19 to be precise, Deepke, who was on fast ever since Sonam Vakchur was picked up from Jantar
16:00Mantar.
16:00He, along with three other activists from ISA and SFI, started to break his fast.
16:08These students are Neha, Manish Kumar, Amitoj as well.
16:12They were fasting 23 days.
16:16And they called it off from an appeal that the delegation of the opposition leaders, there was an appeal made
16:23by Manoj Jha, Prakash Raj, Shabana Azmi, Prashant Pushan, Yogendra Aadav as well.
16:29They all got on stage and made all the other students who had been fasting for 23 days and Deepke
16:34had been fasting for the past two days to break his fast.
16:37And just then, just when the fast was being broken at Jantar Mantar, you see how things escalated.
16:46This time we see a second round of escalation that is happening.
16:49Tear gas shelling followed both Jantar Mantar and Parliament Street.
16:54And this continued for a while.
16:56The morning one had stopped within a span of half an hour to 45 minutes.
17:00This one continued for a long time.
17:02Pictures, visuals from both Jantar Mantar and outside Parliament showcased that anger was really spilling over.
17:08People had, you know, managed to break away from the parricades and they were going in.
17:13Police was clashing on the other side.
17:14What we saw then was perhaps the strongest protest that we have seen in the heart of the national capital
17:20since Nirbhaya.
17:22I was there, I can tell you, since Nirbhaya, this has been the strongest protest that we have seen in
17:28the national capital.
17:29And perhaps the strongest pushback to the Modi government since they have been in power as well.
17:34By 2.30, we got reports that CJP spokesperson held a 10-minute meeting with J.P. Nadda.
17:43And they posted their demands again on X, saying release Vangchuk, Education Minister must resign and 1 crore compensation for
17:53those who died by suicide.
17:56Now, ever since then, we've been getting reports from all over the city, including parts of Connaught Place.
18:05We are getting sporadic instances being report of Lathi charge inside Jantar Mantar.
18:10We don't have eyes because there's no network.
18:13And outside, we are hearing of small sporadic instances happening everywhere.
18:18There were reports that earlier came in that Dipke had been arrested.
18:23Kaukro Janta Party clarified that he was not.
18:25He's still at Jantar Mantar.
18:27In fact, on that, let me play out for you the latest report that we have from Saurab Das,
18:33the spokesperson of the Kaukro Janta Party who met with J.P. Nadda just moments ago.
18:41We have two times met J.P. Nadda just met him.
18:44We were 12.00 here.
18:46And the meeting was around 2.15.30.
18:51And in the meeting, we just told him that our three demands are first,
18:56that Sonam Vangchuk Ji will immediately release the formality.
18:59And when the formality is complete, he will allow them to create a video.
19:04Allow a component of the Kaukro Jantean Rajah said to me.

19:11Number two, our demands from the Kaukro Jantar Mantar.

20:18The meeting lasted over three and a half hours, we are told,
20:22and it was held inside the parliament.
20:25Dharmint Pradhan, the man, remember the education minister
20:28who's been the one-point agenda,
20:32whose resignation has been the one-point agenda of this entire protest,
20:36saying under him,
20:38NEET leaks have happened not once, not twice.
20:41There were warnings given, but he continues to enjoy that position
20:44despite suicides, despite multiple times in which we've seen leaks,
20:50not just of NEET and other examinations as well.
20:52So what exactly could this meeting indicate is what we wait and watch for.
20:58But let's try and get our eyes on the ground now.
21:01Let me cut across to my colleague Preeti Chaudhary
21:02who's been covering the protest right from the morning.
21:06Preeti, first give us a quick update
21:08on where the protest is at right now.
21:13From morning to now, we've seen two times
21:16where it escalated into a very violent form.
21:20As we speak, we are hearing that there are sporadic instances
21:23being reported across the country
21:25and in certain parts of Delhi as well.
21:28Tell us what's it looking like where you are.
21:42I'm not sure if Preeti Chaudhary can hear me right now,
21:45but let's try and connect to her again.
21:49Do we have Moshmi?
21:52Okay, let me cut across to Moshmi now.
21:54Moshmi, take us through what exactly is happening as we speak.
21:59Through the day, the protest has taken different twists and turns
22:02at 5.17 this evening.
22:06Where are we at?
22:09Really, we've seen a day where the first day
22:12of the monsoon session of the parliament,
22:15in and around the parliament,
22:16there was a lot of protests happening,
22:19a lot of action happening.
22:20We saw anti-riot vehicles,
22:24rapid action force, paramilitary force,
22:28protestors running helter-skelter,
22:30the entire Kartavya Pat,
22:32you know, which is a VVIP area,
22:35almost jammed.
22:37The roads from Railway Bhavan to Air Force Bhavan
22:40almost jammed.
22:41And we were at the Raisina Road to Rafi Mar.
22:46All these roads were completely choked
22:48with barricades and force
22:51standing in front of a sea of protesters.
22:54And right now, we can see that
22:56in small pockets,
22:58protesters are sitting,
23:00talking, sloganeering,
23:02but they are in small lots.
23:04The traffic is as usual,
23:07running as usual.
23:08The traffic is chatted in the entire area.
23:11But the protesters have registered
23:14their protests very emphatically.
23:16That's one thing when I observed,
23:18that it was the first time
23:20after a long time, Sonal,
23:21that you saw protesters at the Rail Bhavan.
23:25Now, Rail Bhavan and the parliament gate
23:27are just perhaps 100 meters,
23:30a 100 or a 50 meter sprint.
23:33So, that close,
23:35none of the political parties
23:37or the youth wings have really reached.
23:40And that was more so
23:42because they protected in pockets.
23:44It was like a guerrilla unit
23:46coming up from metro stations
23:48to various mook and corners.
23:52They were looking like,
23:53they were normal students
23:54of all age groups
23:57from 15 to 25.
24:00You know, just walking around,
24:02protesting, sloganeering.
24:03So, it was a very formidable
24:06kind of a...
24:07Right.
24:10Formidable kind of a protest,
24:12one may say,
24:13in terms of numbers.
24:14But yes, the police,
24:15the police and the paramilitary
24:17were very careful.
24:19We saw tear gas right in front of us
24:22to disperse the crowd.
24:24They were pulled and detained.
24:26But it was quite a challenge.

25:08because of all the
25:09arterial roads,
25:10be it right behind me,
25:11which connects to
25:12Le Meridian
25:13and the Railway Bhawan.
25:15Protesters were flushed
25:16from there.
25:16They came in,
25:17they started squatting
25:18on the arterial roads
25:19that connect,
25:20could not place
25:21especially the outer circle.
25:22It has been
25:23in the last 45 minutes.
25:25All we have heard
25:26is a constant boom
25:27of tear gas shells.
25:29It had ebbed
25:30in the last 15 minutes
25:31and now there is
25:31a new thrust
25:32especially because
25:33most of the protesters
25:34are not abating.
25:36They are,
25:36it's an eyeball-to-eyeball
25:38confrontation
25:38that continues
25:39with the Delhi police
25:40at least where
25:41cannot place is concern.
25:43Right behind me,
25:44like I pointed out,
25:45is Le Meridian.
25:46On the left of that
25:48is the road
25:48that connects
25:49to Sansat Bhawan.
25:50Then there is
25:50Janpat and KG Marv
25:52and the latest
25:53of course
25:53is that a group
25:55of protesters
25:55have squatted
25:56at Janpat.
25:57Every time
25:58the police
25:58lobs a few tear gas shells
26:00they disperse
26:01and then they come
26:02back again.
26:02That is what
26:03they are doing
26:03and then once
26:06the police
26:06in riot gear
26:07now moves
26:08to a different location
26:09the protesters
26:10move back
26:11to that same location.
26:12So it is
26:13turning out
26:14to be quite a nightmare
26:15to control the crowds
26:16in cannot place.
26:17Still,
26:18they are not moving.
26:20If you can still hear
26:20the boom of tear gas shells
26:23continues
26:24where CP is concerned
26:25and maybe
26:26because even though
26:27talk have been opened
26:29channels have been opened
26:30with the government
26:31where the CGP
26:32is concerned
26:32and there is
26:33a three point agenda
26:34they've put forth
26:35where the government
26:36if you can hear
26:36the tear gas shells
26:37continue.
26:38The protesters

26:40there is complete
26:41snapping of internet
26:42so there is very little
26:43communication
26:43so it's a huge possibility
26:45many of them
26:46haven't been communicated
26:47that channels
26:48have been opened.
26:49They are continuing
26:50to protest
26:50and it's an angry crowd

26:54I can easily say
26:55this is a redux
26:56it takes you back there
26:57the protesters
26:58are not going anywhere
26:59and right now

27:41seems to me
27:42under a radar
27:43and the police
27:44has to constantly
27:45watch and wait
27:46and see how
27:46it unfolds

36:04Anisha, Sonam Vangchuk's wife had taken the court to High Court yesterday,
36:10asking them to say that if he is not under detention,
36:14why was he picked up from Jantar Mantar 1?
36:17And then if he was indeed, his life was under threat,
36:21then he should have been moved or he should have the right to move to a hospital of his choice.
36:26Yesterday, the order did not come in the favour of Sonam Vangchuk.
36:30Today, the case has gone to a bigger bench.
36:33What are we hearing there?
36:35Well, Sonam, it is a very interesting argument that has gone on before the High Court.
36:41Even today, the court has not passed any orders,
36:44whether in favour of or against Gitanjali Angmo's demand
36:48to transfer her husband to a doctor of his choice.
36:53We are seeing a very strange phenomenon here, really,
36:56where the centre is arguing that because Sonam Vangchuk's health
37:00and any threat to his life due to the ongoing protest
37:05could have a larger impact on the law and order situation outside,
37:09therefore it is required to keep him under observation in a government hospital.
37:14And with regard to that, the court yesterday said,
37:17well, we can't give you any relief right now, let us look at the reports first.
37:21Again, today, this matter went before the higher bench,
37:24the two judges' bench of the High Court,
37:26with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court
37:28and Justice Tejas Kari are hearing this matter.
37:30Again, the same argument has been raised by both sides.
37:34Sonam Vangchuk's wife and their lawyers
37:36arguing that as a free citizen of the country,
37:39Sonam Vangchuk should have the right to make his own medical decision.
37:43There is no FIR, there is no detention,

42:58over the reported incidents of stone felting and also attack on police personnel. Because
43:03remember, there have been reports, there have been incidents where police personnel have also
43:07been injured during the protest. Not just that, according to sources, not only have several
43:13police officials been injured during the protest today at different locations, near parliamentary police
43:19stations, several vehicles were also damaged. According to police sources, several people
43:25have been detained as well by the Delhi police. And therefore, cases will be filed according
43:30to, according to the respective offences under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyae Suhita.
