Sierra Leone drops treason charges against ex-president Koroma

Sierra Leone has dropped treason charges against former president Ernest Bai Koroma, officials said Tuesday, for his alleged role in what authorities called an attempted 2023 coup.

00:01Ernest Ba'i Koroma is free to return to his country.
00:05A former president of Sierra Leone, Koroma had exiled himself to Nigeria in 2024,
00:12after he was charged with treason for what authorities called an attempted coup a year earlier.
00:19But authorities said on Tuesday that the charges had been dropped
00:23and that Koroma could return at any time of his choosing, according to an official statement.
00:30In November 2023, 21 people were killed and 80 arrested
00:35after armed attackers stormed several military buildings, two prisons and police stations.
00:41Authorities later said that the attacks were a military coup attempt.
00:45No reason has been given for the lifting of the charges on Tuesday.
00:50But some political insiders believe the government is trying to promote national unity.
