Suspects appear in US court facing charges killing of Haiti's president

The 18 men accused of involvement in the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse were extradited to the Unted States over the weekend.

00:0018 suspects accused of involvement in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse
00:07have been extradited to the United States. He was shot dead at his home in the capital Port-au-Prince
00:13in July of that year, allegedly by a group of mainly Colombian mercenaries. The men will be
00:19tried in a federal court in Florida. U.S. authorities allege the state served as a central
00:24location for planning and financing the plot to oust the Haitian president and replacing with
00:28the summoner of the conspirators' choosing. On Monday, more than a dozen people appeared in a
00:33federal court in Miami on charges related to the assassination, including key suspect Joseph
00:38Bardieu. The former Haitian Ministry of Justice employee was arrested in October 2023 after
00:44being on the run for more than two years. Defense attorneys in the U.S. for other suspects have
00:50asserted that Bardieu was the mastermind behind the plan to assassinate Moïse. At least nine people so
00:57far have been convicted at trial or through guilty pleas.
