00:00A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday convicted former President Joseph Kabila of treason and sentenced him to death.
00:10The high military court in Kinshasa ruled that Kabila was guilty of treason, war crimes, conspiracy and organizing an insurrection together with the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group.
00:20It also ordered Kabila to pay $29 billion in damages to Congo as well as $2 billion to the province of North Kivu and another $2 billion to South Kivu.
00:30The court ordered Kabila's immediate arrest.
00:33The former president has been on trial in absentia since July and his whereabouts remain unknown.
00:38The Congolese government accused him of having collaborated with Rwanda and the M23 to overthrow President Felix Tshisekedi.
00:45In May, the country's Senate voted to repeal his immunity, paving the way for prosecution.
00:50Kabila has always denied the allegations and has denounced his trial as a political move.
