00:00Ira Winderman is on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline.
00:03He has covered the Miami heat for the Sun Sentinel for longer than Solana has been alive.
00:08That's not even a joke.
00:10That's kind of scary.
00:11That's crazy.
00:13But it shows you this guy knows his stuff.
00:15You can read Ira's coverage on the Sun Sentinel app.
00:19You can follow Ira on Twitter at Ira Heat Beat.
00:23So obviously this Bam Tyler thing exploded in a funny fashion on Friday late.
00:31So where does it stand now?
00:33And is there going to be some sort of punishment from the league, do you think, towards Bam and or?
00:38You know, I asked the league and their thing is, you know, at the moment, no, for this reason.
00:43It wasn't at a league sanctioned event.
00:46It wasn't something where the league handled it.
00:48Like what happens is here in Vegas, Resorts World, large complex they built here has three hotels inside.
00:54They built this big practice tent.
00:56It's a tent and there's like four full courts in there.
00:59Teams scheduled time.
01:00AAU teams can schedule time.
01:02Players can go.
01:03But it's not NBA sanctioned.
01:05It's sort of not their purview.
01:06So it's sort of like players in a bar fight or something like that, that the legal system would handle
01:12it.
01:12But we still don't know.
01:13Everyone's using the word punch.
01:15I'm not sure there was an actual punch more than a shove and a knock to the face.
01:19Again, you know, like Solana said earlier in the show, the TMZ video, you know, it's an auction right now.
01:25If there was an AAU team playing there, we know every kid has his phone at the disposal.
01:30So I am sure all the kids, their dads grab their phones.
01:34They're in an auction with TMZ.
01:35Something like this has to come out when it's in the public and it's an open place.
01:40So, so far, no league sanctions as we talk now.
01:42Now, I think everyone would love to just sort of push it under the rug.
01:46It's summer league.
01:46If guys can't have fun in the summer, why are we out here?
01:50Ira, to that point, what happened?
01:52Was it brewing?
01:54Like, what was going on between Bam and Tyler?
01:58You know, Shannon, because I know, I believe you had played professional sports at one time.
02:03And I think there's one thing at play here more than anything.
02:06When one guy gets the money and the other guy doesn't.
02:09And forget about everything else on the side.
02:11Bam out of bio twice, had extension deadlines, boom.
02:14As soon as he had them, he paid them.
02:17Tyler Hero last October had an extension deadline, crickets.
02:21Tyler Hero had another extension deadline starting in July.
02:24They traded him instead.
02:25When you don't get your bag, there is jealousy.
02:28But then for Tyler Hero to go on social media and this whole burner account thing.
02:32Again, if you're Kevin Durant and you've earned half a billion dollars, you can do whatever the heck you want,
02:38wherever you want.
02:39I think this is so stupid on Tyler's part that if I'm his agent, I'm telling him, shut down your
02:45social media, kid.
02:46You were in line for a hundred million dollar plus extension.
02:49Would you rather be a smart aleck about the whole thing or get your bag?
02:54I think it was a real bad choice by Tyler.
02:56And eventually, guys, you know, have enough and Bam had enough.
02:59And, I mean, I can imagine you're talking about league sanctions.
03:02Mama Bam is going to come down harder on him than any league or any team.
03:08I want to hear what his mom has to say about this.
03:11Ira, is this surprising to you that it got to this point between whether it was Jimmy Butler, whether it
03:19was Tyler Hero,
03:20and this resentment you talk about with Bam Adebayo, because we know how Bam is regarded inside that building, right,
03:28internally.
03:29Is it surprising that it got to that point?
03:32Because Bam seems more subdued than to be involved in any sort of, you know, behind the scenes arguments or
03:39discussions with any of these guys.
03:41Like, he always seemed like the perfect teammate to have, but now we kind of realize the two other faces
03:48of the organization weren't too fond of 13.
03:52You know what?
03:52It's just the way sports is.
03:54Channing knows this.
03:55There are so many fights behind closed doors in locker rooms and otherwise that we never find out about because
04:02it's kept in private.
04:03This happened to be in a public setting.
04:04I talked to someone about Heat and I said, oh, what about Heat family now?
04:08And he goes, this is exactly about Heat family.
04:11Families have these things also.
04:13This is what it's like.
04:15We understand that.
04:16He goes, just because you guys don't see what goes on every day.
04:19Remember, Shaquille O'Neal tried to kill Pat Riley and Zoe had to step in between the two of them.
04:25This happens all the time.
04:27Jimmy, no one was a fan of Jimmy Butler.
04:29They were a fan of winning.
04:30When they were winning and things were going good, it's fine.
04:33If Bam and Tyler were still teammates, this wouldn't have come out.
04:36This was Tyler figuring, hey, I'm not your teammate anymore.
04:39I can say whatever you want.
04:41This happens all over the league all the time.
04:43It's the fights we never see that are, you know, the old what happens in private stays in private.
04:48Apparently what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas anymore.
04:53Ira, is this, and I was talking about earlier in the show where now it's D-Wade, UD,
05:01and Bam has now jumped.
05:03Bam jumped LeBron in my mind.
05:07Is this a UD thing?
05:08Is this what UD did for years for this team?
05:11Yeah, and it's exactly, it's so fitting that Bam followed UD as team captain, that that's who they are.
05:18You know what?
05:18But it's, I hate to use the phrase this much, but it's about drinking the Kool-Aid.
05:22And Chandy, you know this.
05:23When Nick Saban was there, no one was drinking his Kool-Aid.
05:27But with the Miami Heat, they found, well, actually, that's probably not true.
05:30There probably were acolytes of Saban who did whatever he said, and you probably view them as suck-ups.
05:35But it's the same thing with the Heat.
05:37This is not for everyone.
05:39Kyle Lowry came in here and goes, like, what are we doing here about Heat culture?
05:43LeBron came in here, had all his people working here with sort of, yeah, Heat culture, I'm just here to
05:48win.
05:49So it's a matter of whether you get the buy-in or not.
05:52Every team has their culture, guys, and teams also have guys who win.
05:56Jimmy Butler didn't buy in, but he won.
05:58LeBron didn't buy in, but he won.
06:00But, yes, when it comes to what the Heat say they are about the culture, the Kool-Aid, hey, you
06:05know, UD, glass half full.
06:07You know, Bam, glass half full.
06:09That's just who these guys are.
06:10That's who the Heat looks for.
06:11But I've got to tell you, sometimes that's to the detriment of the Heat.
06:14I'd rather have a guy who doesn't drink Kool-Aid but gets you to the championship.
06:18I think that means more, but that's what the Heat are about.
06:21But it feels right.
06:23Doesn't it feel like there's this Heat resurgence now with that happening and Giannis coming and them being in the
06:30conversation for LeBron?
06:32Like, doesn't it feel like we're swinging it again?
06:34This is going to get aggregated, and I'm going to be in trouble the first time I see him.
06:38But, guys, doesn't Tyler Hero have the kind of face that makes you want to punch him in the face?
06:42Doesn't he just have that kind of look?
06:44He's that kind of guy.
06:46He's the instigator in high school who was always doing the little digs until it becomes too much.
06:52But this time he put it out worldwide on social media instead.
06:56I don't want to say he had, you know, what was due, what was coming to him, but it sort
07:02of was.
07:02You do something like that, there's going to be pushback.
07:05Now the question is whether it's pushback or it's punchback.
07:08But you know what?
07:09You play the wise ass.
07:11You play that kind of character.
07:13That's what's going to happen.
07:15Hey, you want to have your personality?
07:16God bless you.
07:17You want to be Boy Wonder?
07:19God bless you.
07:19You want to wear all kinds of outfits even after you lose?
07:22God bless you.
07:23But eventually that kind of stuff catches up to you.
07:26I think Tyler Hero could be screwed now when it comes to the Bucs and comes to his extension.
07:31Because you know what?
07:32We're talking BAM and heat culture now.
07:33It's the greatest thing.
07:35Guys, I'll ask you guys.
07:36If you're the Bucs right now and Tyler Hero is due a four-year, $160 million extension,
07:43after what happened on Friday, what would you do now?
07:47But does he deserve it on the court?
07:50Because he doesn't play enough.
07:52Like you're saying, I understand what you're saying about off-the-court stuff.
07:56But on the court, I don't think he deserves, what would that be?
08:00Four for $160?
08:01I don't think he's worth that.
08:03You know what?
08:04Angry Tobin put it right.
08:05He played for a million dollars a game last season.
08:07No one else in the NBA, that would be an $82 million salary.
08:11Luka is getting there.
08:13Jokic will get there.
08:15But that's basically, you have to show up and you have to play.
08:17That's always been the problem with Tyler.
08:20Tyler, he's always had amazing confidence and he's needed it because that's who he is.
08:24Look what he said to us when we spoke to him the other day at the game there.
08:27He said, look, I'm a 6'5 white guy with a 6'3 wingspan, those dinosaur arms, and look how
08:33far I've gone.
08:34I mean, the All-Star game, I averaged 20.
08:36And by every measure, he's correct.
08:38The one thing he didn't tell us was all the missed time that's factored in there.
08:42So, I don't know.
08:43I just think at some point, you can say whatever you want.
08:46When you're Durant, when you're LeBron, when you're a guy who's at the upper echelon, you think otherwise.
08:52I would rather have the bag than have the last word.
08:55He got neither when it came to BAM.
08:58You mentioned LeBron a couple times.
09:01What's going on?
09:02In the wind, he's doing FanFest in New York this weekend.
09:05Everyone thinks he's either going to announce it there or leading up to it in these coming days just so
09:10it doesn't become the overwhelming thing when he does his appearances there.
09:14You know, from my world, and I told someone this, so let's get this straight.
09:18The Heat are introducing Giannis Antetokounmpo at 3 p.m. on Thursday.
09:22It would be so LeBron to announce at 3 p.m. on Thursday, and like a bunch of cockroaches in
09:28front of Giannis, we're all scurrying for the door to go write our LeBron story.
09:32So, one thing about LeBron, for all the Shamses and the Wojes and the Chris Haynes, he controls the narrative
09:40100% of who he is and what he is.
09:44He is the CEO of the NBA.
09:46That's why there haven't been any leaks.
09:48I would think sometime this week, I would think common sense tells me the Cavaliers, LeBron knows how to write
09:54a story.
09:55The Cavaliers are the story.
09:57If he doesn't do the Cavaliers, all of a sudden it becomes a little bit ugly again.
10:01Wait a minute.
10:01This is the second time you did this to your hometown team.
10:04By contrast, if he doesn't come to the Heat, hey, they got Giannis.
10:07They can move on.
10:08They can get DeRozan.
10:09They can get Klay Thompson.
10:10They can make their moves.
10:11I'm really curious.
10:12But I would think common sense, says Cleveland, but damn, LeBron's always been his own guy.
10:19Ira, like two weeks ago when all this happened, I was just spitballing with Crowder.
10:23Hawk was off.
10:24And I mentioned, what's happening with Kyrie Irving?
10:27Like, is that a piece that, whether it's Cleveland, whether it's Philly, whether it's whoever, Miami,
10:32they could potentially acquire via trade, and Dallas might be for it.
10:38They can get a draft pick, a young asset.
10:40They're rebuilding anyways.
10:41That could be the piece that is missing to entice LeBron James to finally secure him, whoever the team is.
10:47Is that what he's waiting for, do you think?
10:50Is he waiting for one of these teams to go make a move like that to really cement the fact
10:56that they'd be a contender?
10:58Or do you think he's comfortable with where the rosters are at, with whatever team he's deciding for?
11:03Look, all the teams he's looking at, and you can put Kyrie something, but Solana, they're not going to have
11:08more than the Sixers do.
11:10So if he's looking at a place to win, I know Joel Embiid's health is a major risk, but Tyrese
11:14Maxey is great.
11:15And then you add a Jalen Brown, and you have a Vijay Enchkomen, what they've gotten, and you're adding in
11:21other factors in free agency also.
11:23So if he just wants the best chance to win, I think it would be Philadelphia.
11:26Philadelphia, I'm not sure Kyrie is essentially some place that teams, a player teams would pick up because of his
11:33other off-court kind of things.
11:35Dallas is saying they want him to mentor Cooper Flagg right now.
11:38So I think if you're looking at the Heat and saying, what Maverick might you might want, I think Clay
11:42Thompson makes more sense.
11:43He could put on his little sailor cap.
11:45He could pull right up to the arena in his boat and his golden state all over again.
11:50We're out of time here, Ira.
11:52Ira, have you written a column welcoming LeBron back to the Heat?
11:56I have written two stories.
11:58I have written a story, LeBron 2.0.
12:00I compared it to all the great comebacks in South Florida sports.
12:03I spoke about Roberto Luongo going back to the Panthers after that long gap and being great.
12:08Jeff Conine, Mr. Marlin coming back for a second time, having the success there.
12:13Jimmy Johnson going from the Canes, coming back as Dolphins coach.
12:15I've written that, the great comeback, greatest sports comeback in South Florida history.
12:20And I've sort of written that he's going to Cleveland, so screw him.
12:23Let's move forward on the season.
12:25So, you know, again, the book I'm going to write of stories I never wrote is going to be my
12:30memoir.
12:30And you're going to have the Heat losing when Ray Allen doesn't hit the shot at the end of that
12:36game six against the Spurs.
12:37It's like the bizarro Seinfeld episode.
12:39Yes.
12:40That's where it's going to wind up being.
12:41You've written and covered an alternative universe that has never taken place yet in our spectrum.
12:47Oh, absolutely.
12:48Dwayne Wade not getting a single foul call against the Mavericks.
12:51He couldn't get the right whistle.
12:53Mark Cuban is ecstatic.
12:54They win the championship there.
12:56And you know what?
12:57In my business, because of the deadlines we have, I mean, this is how much of a loser Ira Winterman
13:01is.
13:02I write two versions of Summer League stories if I'm on deadline.
13:05I'm writing stories about guys I've never heard of.
13:08It's like, wait, big Russian guy leads Heat to victory.
13:11Just to cover myself, it really is a pathetic existence.
13:15Amazing.
13:16Ira, you want me to ghostwrite for you?
13:19You know what?
13:19I actually have them all written with little XXs in the scoreline about the final score, so I don't need
13:25that.
13:25And I have another version written of Ira Winterman makes big money as journalist.
13:29That didn't happen either.
13:31Hey, maybe one day.
13:33I have to tell you, it is a great book idea.
13:36The unpublished columns of things that never happened, but you were prepared to happen.
13:42Absolutely.
13:42Can you imagine if Pat Riley ever came here to lead the Miami Heat, but the Knicks gave up partial
13:47ownership stake, and you know, life just changed.
13:50Yeah.
13:51Amazing.
13:52That's so cool.
13:52Hey, but then again, if things went the other way, I would be talking right now to Sid Rosenberg.
13:57So you just never know.
14:01Ira Winderman from the Sun Sentinel.
14:03Follow him on social media at IraHeatBeat.
14:06Thank you, Ira.
14:06Safe travels back from Vegas.
14:08More MAGA politics coming up next.
14:10Thanks, guys.
