Transcript
00:00Let me shift away from LeBron to the Heat here.
00:03Has Tyler Hero played his final game for the Miami Heat?
00:08I don't think I'm breaking any news here.
00:10I think Tyler Hero thinks he has.
00:13I think it's just been too much.
00:14It's been nonstop.
00:15It's been incessant.
00:16And you could say, hey, wait a minute.
00:18You only showed up for 33 or so games this year.
00:20You have no right in that.
00:22But man, Hop, any of us in any of our jobs, when you hear every single year,
00:27you're going to be moved somewhere else.
00:28You're going to be doing something else.
00:30I think it wears on you.
00:31I don't think Tyler Hero can be his best self in Miami.
00:35I think he's been sort of knocked down too many times.
00:38Last year, Norm Powell comes in.
00:40He's the all-star.
00:41He's going to be traded for Giannis.
00:43Remember when the Heat told Tyler, if we do move you, it's going to be for a Hall of Famer?
00:48And they were mentioning Durant.
00:49And they were mentioning Giannis.
00:50And they were mentioning other players of that ilk.
00:53They're trying to do the same right now.
00:54They're trying to do it for Giannis.
00:56They might do it for Durant.
00:58I have a feeling it could be for Lowry Markkinen, who's not a Hall of Famer.
01:02I think Tyler needs a fresh start.
01:04I think the Heat need a fresh start.
01:06Yet we can't keep bringing back the same thing and calling it something different.
01:10So, look, will Tyler be here?
01:12Hey, there has to be a suitor, someone who wants him.
01:15But I think it would be best for the Heat and best for Tyler if he's given a chance
01:19and the Heat are given a chance to move on.
01:21And, Ira, another player, Kalil Ware, like trade value and, you know, pieces, assets.
01:28I think he is.
01:28He's seven feet.
01:29Everybody wants a seven-footer standing around in the paint.
01:31But is it a good player with a bad fit?
01:34Because we're doing this.
01:35We can't do this for years and years and years.
01:37We're supposed not going to play him.
01:39He's not going to put him in a rotation for months.
01:41Like, is it good player, bad fit here in Miami for Kalil?
01:45You know what, Channing, I'm going to throw it back to you.
01:47He's a non-motor skilled player.
01:50And, Channing, think about all the guys you played with in the Dolphins and even at UF.
01:54There is nothing as unnerving as a player you know has the skills, you know has the talent,
02:01and doesn't have the damn motor.
02:02I don't think he's lazy.
02:04I think it's his Arkansas upbringing and who he is.
02:08He was basically run out of one school at Oregon where the coach there, Dana Albin, said,
02:12I can't do this.
02:13He then went to Indiana and Mike Woodson just laid down the law and sort of got him back
02:18in line.
02:19He's so skilled.
02:20He's so talented.
02:21And yet there are so many times you see him go through the motions.
02:26And imagine being a teammate and knowing there's more there and saying, why not that all the
02:31time?
02:31Solana, you've seen that.
02:32We have seen Kalil Ware look great, look all-star level, look all-rooky level.
02:38And then there's other times.
02:39So I don't know.
02:40If Eric Spolster can't bring it out of you, and Channing, you've played for some coaches
02:44who are great motivators.
02:46And if those guys can't bring it out of you, maybe a change of scenery does help because
02:50I still think, and this is the worst thing I think you can call an athlete, a sometimes
02:56player.
02:57And I think Kalil Ware is a sometimes player.
02:59No surprise, Ira.
03:01The Heat, 13th overall pick in the lottery.
03:05They didn't move up again.
03:06They never have.
03:08Will the 13th pick be enticing enough in a hypothetical here for the Heat moving to get
03:15Giannis Antetokounmpo?
03:16Obviously, you package that with some of the players that we have just mentioned and a couple
03:21other draft picks down the line.
03:23Will the Heat still be operating as Giannis, number one option this offseason come the
03:30NBA draft?
03:32Yeah, they will be, but they'll be one of 10.
03:34So, you know, they could be, but it won't matter.
03:36Here's the problem.
03:37Milwaukee, people forget, was also in the lottery.
03:39They traded picks.
03:40They had a shuffle with Atlanta and the Worldlings.
03:42They were number 10.
03:43So the Heat's at number 13.
03:44So it's not like, ooh, another great pick.
03:46They're right there.
03:47So it almost becomes a matter of, one, does Milwaukee want to go young, young, where 10
03:51and 13 start that process?
03:53Do they see a possibility where 10 plus 13, only an NBA draft math, can equal five, and
03:59they can pull those picks together?
04:01But the fact they're so close to the Heat in the draft order, it's not like they're getting
04:04another great pick because they're already ahead of the Heat.
04:07So I don't know that as much.
04:09And again, you know, it's just a matter of we think what teams are going to offer.
04:13And here's what I've been saying.
04:14The Heat's best package starts with Kalil Ware, Tyler Hero, number 13, and other picks.
04:20Houston's best package starts with Alperen Shingun and Reed Shepard.
04:24Well, and this is debatable.
04:26Hock, you can get these on your text line or whatever you use.
04:28I think a lot of people would think Shingun is an all-star and Reed Shepard, who's a shooter
04:32in a shooter's league, is simply a better package.
04:35So it's going to be a matter of, one, what do the Bucs favor?
04:39Two, does Giannis say, okay, I'll go to Houston, but I'm not resigning.
04:43In a year, I have a player option.
04:45I need Giannis.
04:46Well, I'll put it another way.
04:47The Heat need Giannis to be a son of a bitch and say, I will only resign with these teams.
04:52We know if he only says one, it's going to be the Lillard rule.
04:55The commissioner's going to go, no, no, no, you can't dictate only one.
04:58We're finding everyone's butt, you know, because of that.
05:00But if you say two or three, New York, Miami, and just list a few, the Heat need Giannis to
05:06reduce the field.
05:07If it's an open field, I would think if you're sitting at a poker table, people have more
05:12chips than the Heat, probably are holding a better hand.
05:15It's really going to be up to Giannis.
05:16And man, the one thing I hate about stars is this whole passive-aggressive thing, where
05:22they let everyone else say what they're thinking.
05:24You're a man.
05:26Say what you want.
05:27You are a multiple MVP.
05:29You are a multiple all-star.
05:31You're an NBA champion.
05:32No one is begrudging him if he follows like LeBron did and so many other stars, and James
05:38Harden has done 90 times, and just say, hey, I've done all I can for you guys.
05:42Get a good package, but let's work together.
05:45I'm only going to resign at X, Y, or Z.
05:48Well, I don't know about you guys, but I am excited to hear for the first time that the
05:52Heat might be in the mix for Bulls legend Lowry Markkinen.
05:58Hey, you know what?
05:59You take what you can get.
06:00You could use a flying fin.
06:01You could, man.
06:02And Hock, you've told me this.
06:04You once told me, if the Heat can get a fin and a swede, they're set.
06:07So, you know, I think we have a chance to make all-
06:09I thought I said that about the Panthers.
06:11I don't know.
06:11Well, you know what?
06:12If we can make all Scandinavian, I think we'll be fine.
06:17Ira Winderman, would you want to go out the way Mike Biamonte and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
06:27did with all the ceremony game to game, or will you just disappear one day from our Sun
06:35Sentinel apps?
06:36Honestly, they're going to have to pry my fingers off of that computer because for the
06:41last 38 years, I have gotten paid to have fun.
06:45I don't see- I mean, literally, my wife and I have fights all this time, and she goes,
06:48when are you going to stop?
06:49And I'm like, why should I stop?
06:51We're already looking at possible cemetery plots in Atlanta because I figure I'll be connecting
06:55on Delta.
06:56So that's the most likely place of my demise anyway.
07:00You know what?
07:01I spoke to someone at ESPN, and he said the people who truly love their jobs never go out
07:06on their own terms because they never want to go out.
07:09Let's face it.
07:10There's budget cuts.
07:10There's changes in assignments and things like that.
07:13But you know what?
07:14If I could do this forever with Mrs. Winderman's permission, why wouldn't I?
07:19I mean, Salon, I'm sure you're the same way.
07:20When you show up at the arena, you have to stop and pause and go, I'm getting paid for
07:25this.
07:25I love my work.
07:27I love what I do.
07:28I love the people I work with.
07:29They're going to have to pry my dead fingers off of my computer.
07:33Or Anthony Chang is going to poison you.
07:35One or the other.
07:36Well, that either.
07:37So I've been watching too many spy stories, so that's true.
07:39So, you know.
07:39Solana was like, wait a second, you're getting paid?
07:42What do you mean?
07:44We know Solana's lazy, Ira.
07:46He doesn't think like you.
07:48Ira Winderman.
07:49I see Solana in his element there.
07:51I would say this.
07:52There's a really good heat media core there also.
07:55I think Solana would agree.
07:56Just a lot of good guys.
07:57Young guys who were just starting.
07:58Older guys who've been around.
08:00So it's a good mix.
08:01It's a good organization because they're honest.
08:04They may not say everything, but they won't BS you.
08:07They'll let you do your job.
08:09They'll leave it that way.
08:10That's all I care.
08:11Channing, when I hear stories about the Nick Sabans and you can't look them in the eye.
08:15When I see Pat, I say hello, Pat.
08:17When I see Mickey Harrison, I say hello, Mickey.
08:20Now, I don't expect them to give me anything or help me in any way.
08:23But you know what?
08:24It's like I told Hawk, as long as they're free cookies at halftime, I'm all in.
08:29You say, hey, Pat and hey, Mickey, Solana?
08:33Yeah, but I don't always get an answer.
08:39Speaking of heat media, happy birthday, Jason Jackson today, by the way.
08:43Jason Jackson.
08:45Another one at the traveling party.
08:46Good people.
08:48All right, Ira Winderman, follow me on social media and also make sure you subscribe to
08:52the Sun Sentinel, either via the app or the actual newspaper, because that kind of work
08:58doesn't come for free.
09:00Although there's ways to get it for free, but you shouldn't.
09:02You should pay for it.
09:04Because of people like you.
09:05And if I have to, I'll have to work at Tony Fiorentino's three-minute heat camp.
09:09So be it.
09:09Thanks, guys.
09:10Yeah.
09:10If you don't want to subscribe to Ira's work, I generally read Ask Ira in the four o'clock
09:15hour every day.
09:16So just.
09:18Exactly.
09:18How am I going to go out of business?
09:20Because the guy in the middle of the five box right here.
09:22Thanks, guys.
