WEEI Celtics Insider Justin Turpin joins the show to discuss the latest on the Jaylen Brown trade, the pressure on Hugo Gonzalez going into the season, and the NBA Summer League.
Transcript
00:00So, Justin, first, can you kind of tell me what your take is on,
00:04I don't know if you saw that, but that clip we played right there,
00:07the Bomani Jones one where he was talking about how Jason Tatum
00:12should have spoken up and said something.
00:14Jalen Brown liked that.
00:16What are you hearing, and what does that say to you
00:18about how this whole thing ended?
00:20I mean, yeah, there's certainly something there.
00:22I mean, that would partially explain some of the urgency, right?
00:25Like, at least Jason Tatum might not have went to the Celtics
00:28and said, I want Jalen Brown gone.
00:30But he didn't say, I want him here,
00:32because otherwise he probably would be here.
00:33Like, that's the one thing I really can't wrap my head around here still
00:37is why now and why for that package?
00:39You could have done this deal in August.
00:41You could have done this deal next year.
00:43I don't understand why it had to happen now.
00:45So I think there is certainly something there.
00:47And maybe, you know, their relationship, obviously,
00:49like it's been scrutinized for years.
00:51It's been under the telescope for years.
00:52But maybe this was the year that there was finally some friction.
00:55Maybe the idea of Jalen Brown going out on his Twitch stream all this time
01:00and saying, how was his favorite season?
01:01As Jason Tatum was working to get back and watching from the sideline,
01:04maybe that finally got to him.
01:06And, of course, the usage could play into it as well.
01:08Like, Jalen Brown had a higher usage rate than him in the playoffs.
01:11Like, does that factor in as well?
01:12So for all these years, like all the scrutiny
01:14and everything that they've been under,
01:16possibly it did reach a breaking point this year.
01:18And, you know, there was no point of return.
01:21So, Terp, you got to talk to Mazzulli yesterday, right?
01:24And he spoke for a while there.
01:26He never is that emotional,
01:27so it's always tough to read into his feelings on things.
01:30But what did you come away thinking he is feeling about,
01:33if you can glean anything, about, you know, the Jalen Brown departure?
01:38I thought it was interesting that he said he had no input
01:40because I don't really buy that.
01:42Like, of course, the head coach is going to have input.
01:44This is a guy that the Celtics really believe in.
01:46So, you know, obviously they're keeping him around this year.
01:48So I think he absolutely had input.
01:50And the thing that's been clear throughout everyone
01:52that's spoken about this is that they're going out of their way.
01:56They're doing all that they possibly can
01:57not to kick Jalen on the way out here.
01:59Like, they want to be very respectful to him
02:01and what he was able to accomplish here.
02:03So I think that's very clear.
02:04But I also think it was clear that they are kind of leaning
02:07into a different identity.
02:08And I think that identity will be what they did the best last year.
02:12Like, they were the best offensive rebounding team,
02:14one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the league, right?
02:16You had Mitchell Robinson.
02:17So you're kind of, you know, securing that aspect of your game.
02:20Who was your biggest turnover problem the last couple years?
02:23Jalen Brown.
02:24You get rid of him.
02:24You bring in Mike Conley, who can be trusted to handle the ball.
02:27So I think you are just kind of doubling down
02:29on the things that they did well last year.
02:31And in turn, you're moving on from Jalen Brown.
02:34We had somebody from Yahoo on last week,
02:37and he was the guy who wrote that article about how analytically
02:39Jalen Brown, you know, was a negative and all that.
02:42But, I mean, it got a lot of play, and a lot of people, you know,
02:45took some of the numbers that he threw out there as a way to kind of justify
02:49this trade.
02:51But the one thing he also said that I thought stuck out was that this trade
02:55was a lose-lose for both sides.
02:57Like, it was a lose for the Celtics because they only got Paul George back.
03:00They got pennies on the dollar.
03:01But he also said that you throw Jalen Brown into a mix over there with the
03:0576ers, and you've already got Maxie, and you've already got Joel Embiid,
03:10and now you're throwing in another alpha and someone who's going to want to
03:13show you that he is not what those numbers say that he is.
03:17Could you see there be some sort of potential for things to implode over in
03:22Philadelphia?
03:23100%.
03:24All these years of Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown not liking each other,
03:28or you want to see a pair of teammates that might actually not like each
03:31other, that's Jalen Brown and Joel Embiid.
03:33Like, Jalen Brown took shots at him on his Twitch the entire postseason.
03:37He was talking – the GM relayed something on some station the other day.
03:40He was talking about how Jalen's saying he's going to push Joel Embiid,
03:43get him in the gym, like, kind of bring a different mentality for him.
03:47So, yeah, I think there's absolutely a chance that this doesn't pan out.
03:50And just from a roster construction standpoint as well, it is pretty weird.
03:55Like, you have Tyrese Maxie, obviously, is their number one guy.
03:57Joel Embiid's their number two when healthy.
03:59Jalen Brown was slotted at number three.
04:01Vijay Edgecombe deserves more touches this year after the rookie year he had.
04:05And you've got a guy like Anthony Simons who also needs to get shots coming
04:08off the bench.
04:09So, the whole construction of that team, I don't know.
04:12It feels like it's one of those other teams.
04:13Like, we've seen so many of them really in, like, recent NBA history that they
04:17get all this collection of talent.
04:18It really doesn't mesh.
04:19I could see this work, like, that kind of happening with Philadelphia.
04:22Well, I'm sure they'll start building the new identity with Ugo on the court
04:25tonight at Summer League, Terp.
04:27I mean, what are you expecting?
04:28Is this going to be – is he going to be Jordan right away, or will it take him
04:30a couple months?
04:31I mean, he didn't have a great Summer League last year and did have, by all
04:34standards, pretty good, solid rookie year last year.
04:37So, I expect him to have the ball in his hands a lot.
04:39But, like, Emil Jefferson was talking about it yesterday.
04:41He's coaching the Seminary team that they expect him to kind of take on a
04:44leadership role, which is kind of funny because he's the second youngest player
04:46on the team, and he's only 20.
04:47And he just joined the team because he was with the national team for Spain at the
04:52FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
04:54So, I expect him to have the ball in his hands more.
04:56But, obviously, there's a ton of pressure on him.
04:57Like, so much pressure on him for a Summer League game here because, you know,
05:01everyone knows they didn't want to include him in a trade for Giannis.
05:04And, of course, that's kind of going to be tied to him.
05:07So, there's going to be a lot of pressure on him.
05:09And it kind of gives you a good chance to see, like, what he's made of in these
05:12kind of pressure situations.
05:14Although, it is still Summer League, right?
05:15You can't put a whole lot of stock into it.
05:17But, you know, people are going to want to, especially when you miss out on Giannis.
05:20And part of that was because of the reluctancy to include him in a deal.
05:23All right, Terp.
05:25So, where do you ultimately think LeBron's going to land?
05:28Because, right now, the last we've heard is Windhorst saying that the team has
05:33made a decision.
05:34Or, like, I guess he's basically signed or he's agreed to joining one team,
05:40and it's not the Cavs.
05:42Where do you predict that he is going to go?
05:45Maybe that Lou Cornett voice memo for the Spurs really lured him in.
05:49Like, maybe that was it.
05:50Lou Cornett came in at the final buzzer here and recruited LeBron to say,
05:53San Antonio.
05:54Yeah, how weird is that, by the way, that LeBron was apparently making these
05:57teams, like, leave him a voice memo to basically say how much they wanted him.
06:02And Lou Cornett took that and ran with it.
06:03He was like, all right, I'll leave you a message.
06:05Is that not the most LeBron James thing ever?
06:07He's probably just playing those on loop as he's driving around the golf course
06:10using Bronny's clubs, whatever it may be.
06:13Bronny is $2.9 million guaranteed salary, which he waited a day after so that
06:18salary became guaranteed.
06:19The whole thing is, like, the most LeBron James thing ever.
06:22So I think if it's not, if it's not, if Lou Cornett's message did not work and he
06:27doesn't want to go to San Antonio, which I don't think he does, I think it's
06:30probably Miami.
06:32Yeah, well, you know what, Miami, the only reason I say it's not Miami is because I
06:36think that he's trying to do everything to bolster his resume to be the greatest
06:41of all time.
06:41And it's not as sexy if you go back to a team that you've already won a
06:45championship with instead of saying, I've gone to four different teams and won
06:48championships everywhere I've gone.
06:50And if it's the Sixers, it's even bigger because that team hasn't won anything
06:53since 1983.
06:55So you can also say, I mean, look at this guy.
06:57He, he rose us from the dead and he, all of a sudden he brought back the glory
07:00days.
07:01And if he went to Philly, oh my, him and Jalen Brown, those games, the TD
07:05garden, which I mean, you might have to get earplugs.
07:09It's going to be so loud.
07:10That would be incredible for like a coverage for us and the coverage
07:14standpoint here.
07:15That'd be great having those two together.
07:17But again, we talked about it.
07:18Can he put his differences when Jalen Brown said that Bronny wasn't an NBA
07:22player?
07:22Could he put that aside?
07:23Can those guys mend the fence?
07:25I mean, clearly they didn't think they could mend the fence with Jason Tatum.
07:27Can he do LeBron?
07:28I don't know.
07:29Maybe that's a question mark you got to ask.
07:31Yeah.
07:32The only thing, Terp, that I think that where it could actually work is, you know,
07:35how we said that you've got like three alphas over there, all trying to, you
07:38know, have ball time between Maxie and Jalen and Joel.
07:41If LeBron comes in, we all know who the alpha is.
07:44And so do the players.
07:44They're like, well, LeBron's the guy.
07:46And maybe he would be the one that would make you think it like even more that
07:48it doesn't work.
07:50Well, okay.
07:51You might be right.
07:52Yeah.
07:53Then they'll all be miserable that they're not getting the ball enough.
07:55Oh, how great would it be if Jalen was cocky enough to try to get in
07:58LeBron's face and, you know, try to upstage LeBron.
08:01That would, now that would be fun.
08:03That would be nice.
08:04Well, LeBron on the Twitch stream would do numbers though.
08:07Yes, absolutely.
08:08It would.
08:08Well, Justin Turpin, great stuff.
08:10Where are you going?
08:10Are you going to go anywhere like fun while you're there?
08:13Are you going to, you know, go to one of these like insane, you know,
08:16dinner places or go to one of those clubs where, you know,
08:18people are high off their brains and there's trapezes and stuff?
08:21Really all of the above.
08:22You can catch me at the casino after the Celtics game tonight though.
08:25Six o'clock local time.
08:26That's perfect.
