00:00and it is rich ken ted johnson and uh you can give us a call 617-779-7937 and we're
00:05very lucky
00:06and fortunate to have tier one terp will turpin from wei yeah right justin turpin just i'm sorry
00:12just did i call you will i'm sorry well he's wearing the tom brady gucci nice job sir oh
00:16thank you had to had to dress up nice justin you've got like a the a black jacket people can't
00:21see it
00:21yeah i left it in back you are you are uh doing your best blue steel like tom brady did
00:26on the
00:26catwalk this weekend walking down the little runway there past the kitchen um uh so okay so justin
00:32this after you've been hearing all of this back and forth between stephen a smith and jalen brown
00:37my whole opinion of this was this is fun this is great it's interesting for us i like kind of
00:44like
00:44hearing the two of them bitch at each other but i didn't think that this shakes any kind of foundation
00:50for his place jalen brown's place on the celtics what's your opinion of that no i don't think it
00:56changes the foundation whatsoever like i'm sure the organization doesn't like this doesn't like
01:00the whole streaming thing like one of the best things this organization today will do is like
01:04keep everything so under wrapped right now all this kind of attention is stemming something from
01:09something that doesn't necessarily have to be going on right but they're not going to tell not to do it
01:14so i'm sure the organization isn't thrilled about it but they're not gonna be like oh jalen's streaming
01:18and he's in media wars with steven a smith let's trade him like that's not gonna impact any of that
01:23terp can we play that clip of uh him talking about jason tatum i want to get your opinion of
01:28this because i think that ted nye had a different take than than uh ken over here has you want
01:33right
01:33off the hop where he's he's kind of addressing yeah yeah let's hear that okay let's pause right
01:38there what type of journalism is this jason tatum hasn't been on my stream and this is what we're
01:43talking about on first take what if jt just don't like being somewhere in an uncontrolled environment
01:49that shot not necessarily i don't when did i forget like the timeline of all this all these
01:54streaming kind of running together but wasn't that like right after tatum came back that he said that
01:58he was going to be jumping on the stream and obviously by then he wasn't really doing as much
02:02so he did promote it and like say he was going to join it but of course he's not going
02:06to come on
02:06after they blew a three to one lead he didn't play in the game seven like that's understandably so he's
02:11not going to jump on he's not going to create that kind of attention it's different when things are going
02:15well and you're winning and 56 wins on the regular season like everyone's like okay this is like
02:19great behind the scenes like go out and like people are tuning into the streams but when you have like
02:24just an all-time collapse and we're talking about steven a versus jalen brown instead of previewing a
02:29potential conference finals people get frustrated i agree with you why jason tatum wouldn't come on
02:34but i'm talking about why jalen brown would say that about how he doesn't believe that tatum would
02:39come on in an uncontrolled environment that's almost like saying you you can't you can't handle
02:45an interview when there are questions that you aren't priest that are pre-screened coming your
02:50way possibly i mean he is that's a dick thing to say of all like the nba players like jason
02:55tatum
02:55i'd say is one of the best like in terms of the pr training aspect of it he's like a
02:59robot with all
03:00of his answers and that's what the organization wants those post-game press conferences terps throwing
03:03all kind of bombs at him like throw a couple numbers you can't refute oh yeah follow up after follow
03:08up
03:09all right well okay because i think you and i and ted and i see different than you on that
03:15i just
03:15think that that was something that leaked out that maybe was a little glimpse more of truth than it's
03:21almost like when someone's been drinking and something slips out that they weren't really supposed
03:24to say well i bet that's it right don't you think the one thing that's changed from when tatum said
03:28he
03:28would go on to now is game seven is still so bizarre that he found out he was going to
03:34not be
03:34playing his teammate was not going to be playing until 30 minutes before the tip or something like
03:38that that is weird like if they're really that is weird you wouldn't at least text jb like hey i'm
03:42out
03:42tonight bro uh you know good luck this is on you or you know i find it hard to believe
03:46he didn't know
03:47until 30 minutes before tip but i'm sorry i find that really he did say that but i find that
03:51really
03:52really hard to believe you mean to tell me he didn't know he's playing until 30 minutes before game
03:56that decision was made earlier in the day brad stevens kind of made that clear when he was
04:00talking at his end of the season press conference he's like he didn't look good going through the
04:04workout like that decision is not made 30 minutes before well then why would jay brown didn't know
04:09maybe until 30 minutes i'm not sure why well that sounds like jaylen brown then calling out somebody
04:13in the organization for not letting him know or wanting people to think they didn't let him know yeah
04:18trying to make somebody look bad because there's no other way to say it if that's not the way that
04:22it
04:22went and he said it anyway but this isn't like a game time decision thing he didn't even warm up
04:27like he was later he arrived to the stadium late he never went through warm-ups like that's not a
04:32game time decision right if it was he would have went out and saw if he can go he didn't
04:35even go out
04:36and shoot around like that decision was already made when he knew that when that starting lineup
04:40he was getting saddled up with those guys to start the game you know i'm sure he loved it like
04:44i
04:44really do think jaylen liked it yeah because that's like that's the kind of style he wants to play
04:48and even after they lost the game he was talking about how you know he kind of liked that he
04:52liked
04:52that they brought that energy back and that's what they got away the whole reason they were in that
04:56spot in the first place is because they got away from that in the second half game five and in
04:59game
04:59six you know there there is a i now i'm starting to think about like why jaylen brown is talking
05:05as
05:06much because i know that he's done these streams and stuff i don't remember many post seasons where
05:11he's been this vocal or maybe we're just paying more attention because no you're right he's never been am
05:15okay this is new so isn't there like a theory that you know when there's a room full of people
05:21and you're trying to find the one that's guilty they're usually the one that talks the most yes
05:25like when someone is like just nervous you think he picked that lineup he told joe i want i want
05:29this
05:30lineup i think he might legitimately be nervous that this is the end of his time in boston oh oh
05:37well at that time probably not because at that time like they think they can go out and win the
05:41game
05:41seven like i think now like of course he's he doesn't like the name and the rumors and stuff
05:45like that's happened before and to rich's point though do you think jaylen brown wants to be traded
05:51or do you think he wants to you know be here like he said recently for another 10 years i
05:57think he wants
05:57to be here okay and i think he wants to be here because he knows he has the best chance
06:00of winning
06:01here and as much as you know the the conversation is always jason or jaylen it's the two of them
06:06together and what they've accomplished and like i said they know when they're healthy exactly and
06:10if it was up to me i could play her for the next 10 years but we'll see what does
06:14he what does he
06:15want that he's not what is he just getting not getting that he wants i think he got it this
06:21year
06:21i think he wanted a chance to just prove himself like he's always viewed himself so he should be
06:25happy now yeah i think he is yeah he's a happy he sounds really happy although he's not going to
06:30be
06:30first team all nba right if judging by the mvp i think that was telling last night and i think
06:34that
06:34was always kind of a concern like once they gave cade cuttingham and luka donchich the exceptions
06:38for like not getting there which the luka thing i find crazy because he got suspended for too many
06:43technical fouls and missed a game against the wizards if he didn't get suspended he would have
06:48had 65 games anyway remind me who votes on that again that's like a panel of media members so it's
06:53it's media it's not like other players but the league except like gave them the exception so if i'm
06:57the league i would have been like no because you would have played 65 games if you weren't suspended for
07:03yelling at the officiating like i would have been like no like stick it to him but yeah i think
07:08that
07:08does ultimately because if you like if that's the mvp voting like you'd imagine these are the same
07:12people voting on the all nba then those five but then that listed he's not tied into any salaries
07:18is he with that no he is eligible for an extension this year though so that is something to watch
07:22extend him i think it's july 26th show their hand then july 26th they can give him a two-year
07:28extension
07:29so what that is something to watch what is your feeling about jalen brown's future here i think
07:34he's gonna be here i think he's gonna be here eventually like toward like towards the end of
07:38his career maybe they do move on the celtics have we've seen this before right we saw it with pierce
07:42we saw it with garnett like eventually maybe they do maybe you keep kind of going all in like i
07:46think
07:46next year is like is that's the you're kind of getting towards not towards the end but like you know
07:51you're kind of approaching the back nine a little bit like these guys aren't young anymore like jalen's
07:55gonna be turning 30 jason tatum's already 28 like it's not really they're not these young players
07:59anymore and i know they're always kind of tied to being these young players in the grand scheme
08:02of things they are but you know you really have to try to maximize this window because eventually
08:06they are going to price each other up that's just how the nba works so then how do you reach
08:11brad
08:11steven's vision of getting a big man or getting someone who is you know like who plays around the
08:17rim more i i just like how are they going to do that without giving up a major piece that's
08:21the
08:22kind of complications of having two supermax guys yeah and the derrick white salary as well but you
08:26have the vucvich money coming off i think sam hauser is definitely one that could be traded this
08:31year like i think he's been in obviously in trade talks in the past and i think we saw last
08:35year with
08:35baylor shireman like he's the replacement he shot the same as sam hauser did from three actually was
08:41less streaky too like sam hauser is very streaky he'll always get the 40 this is the first year in
08:45his
08:45career he didn't he was still like right around 38 39 but baylor shireman proved that he can do that
08:50and
08:50he's more he has more ability with the ball he's a better defender like that's that's your replacement
08:55at a much cheaper number it's like eight or nine million less dollars so that gives you some more
08:59flexibility like they have enough resources to do it to add to this team without necessarily
09:04ripping down one of the big guys so if it's because i mean i keep thinking about what brad said
09:09and i think that brad said a lot um and i think that i'm wondering whether or not joe mazula
09:15has the
09:16capacity to coach the way that brad wants him to because we all know that mazula is a chuck up
09:22the
09:22threes guy i mean i keep saying this but he said his favorite stat was three-point attempts do you
09:27believe mazula is disciplined enough or is able to change his coaching style because that's the way
09:35that brad wants it to happen i think he is and i think he has to be like right now
09:39what we've seen
09:40from joe mazula ridiculously successful regular season coach right he has like a 726 win percentage
09:45in the regular season because when you're playing to the percentages and the three-point attempts and
09:49the three-point variance in the volume it works across an 82-game season right especially when you
09:54have capable shooters but you have two or three cold games in a seven-game series you're behind
09:58the eight ball you're already in trouble so i think it worked obviously when they won the nba
10:02finals work for the calves yesterday they were hot from three and that part of that too is the
10:06pistons can't shoot and they didn't get anything going offensively so it works across an 82-game
10:11series or an 82-game season but not necessarily in the postseason that's why christoph porzingis like
10:16as much as people kind of get on him for not necessarily playing when he was here they went
10:20out and got him for when this wasn't working back then when they got him it was to break down
10:24miami zones
10:24and now they kind of need another like break glass in case of emergency just give it to him in
10:28the paint
10:29and let him score well this guy and i'm sorry i'll get to you can real quick but this is
10:33interesting
10:33because with missoula the one thing you can say is that according to this nba anonymous player
10:37oh are you okay yeah um that when when they vote they add votes from all these different anonymous
10:44players the most impressive coach that people outside of their own team found was joe missoula
10:50joe missoula was number one he got 17.8 is that amazing that's amazing of the vote that's why a
10:55lot
10:55of the honest conversations relevant because he went out and praised joe missoula after they after the
10:59season ended milwaukee he's like i want a guy like joe that just wants to care about winning
11:03said nice things about joe he's very well respected in the organization and around the
11:06league and i think you kind of the reason that they were able to play to the three-point percentage
11:11and stuff the way they did was because it won them a title but now after two early exit like
11:16last year was a disaster they were the first team in the play-by-player and that's like kind of
11:19when
11:19they're deciding it to blow two 20-point games and they're both at home in back-to-back games like
11:24that's a disaster yeah now you blow a three to one lead like it works in the regular season
11:28but you have to adjust and i think he will it's a different game in the in the playoffs man
11:32big
11:32how do you not realize that is it a different game altogether though now because we talked about
11:37how the three-point shooting teams of the golden state warriors era it's now how many was it only
11:42like one of the top 10 we made it to the playoffs after that like it's like it just seems
11:46like and
11:47this happens in the nba all the time that style of winning changes constantly a coach comes in and
11:53goes all right now we know how to defend this all right and then all of a sudden there were
11:56no centers
11:57anymore everyone was a three-point shooter and now look what's happening it's changing it's kind of going
12:02back to where it was thank god because three-point shooting basketball can get so boring after a
12:08while well maybe not if all these players love bazula they probably love him because he lets you
12:12chuck threes i mean they're going to come here and do the same thing do we really think joe's going
12:16to
12:16change his he has to he has to like why does he have to if they're running it last year
12:21part of it
12:22last year too is they didn't necessarily have a guy that and this is why i think brad stevens was
12:26so
12:26on top of this during his end of the season press conference they didn't have a guy that they can
12:30just
12:30give it to and let him go get points in the paint let him go attack the red like they
12:33didn't have
12:34one of those guys i'm a big guy and i think the kata conversation is interesting as well because
12:39he's good like he's a really good player in this league but not but can he be your starter like
12:44because he was great in the regular season he does not necessarily with the scoring but with his like
12:49with his ability to screen and all that like he does a lot for you offensively okay he was this
12:54is
12:54really getting into the weeds but he was like second league in screen assist this year behind rudy gobert like
12:58what he does creating offense in that regard it's so important for them but it's interesting because
13:03he was so good in the regular season but in the playoffs he couldn't stay on the floor and and
13:07be killed him at times so do they look at the 82 game sample of which he was one of
13:12the top 15
13:13centers in the nba or do they look at the postseason where he was a big reason that you're not
13:17playing
13:18in the second round all right terp if you could straight up trade jalen brown for yannis do you do
13:22it i don't
13:23no okay i'm i i'm not in on the like the whole yannis thing i'm really not and and what
13:28what
13:28scares you away from it like the age the calf injuries you know the whole i'm really the cap
13:33that's a thing like he's it's every year he's never they just made that up so he didn't have to
13:37play
13:38this year i mean nope let's turn tell you i think the injuries really kind of concern you like his
13:43game is about getting to the hip rim and yeah physical like they need a guy like that but i
13:47also i'm
13:48totally just against breaking up jason tatum and jaylen okay i want to keep them then how about this
13:52and this is the jeff goodman thing that was thrown out there once again the chances of this happening
13:56are probably pretty small but they can happen is the jaylen brown gets traded for yannis yannis is
14:01here with jason tatum and then for the veteran minimum lebron james comes to the boston celtic
14:06that would be something i'd put it as a negative percent chance that happens i'm telling you
14:14jeff goodman is plugged in like that guy knows his basketball and according to i i forget which
14:20nba insider it is but it was somebody was respected a blue check mark um he said that the word
14:26is that
14:27lebron james would be willing to go somewhere for the veteran minimum to win another ring because all
14:32he cares about now is legacy and if you could make that move is there any place that gives you
14:37a better
14:37chance to win a ring no no i i don't think so but i just find it hard to believe
14:41lebron james would
14:42take a minimum contract like that is be the third wheel not gonna happen you don't ever give money
14:47back to ellie 52 million last year he's gonna take a minimum deal so according to according to
14:52a breakdown that i saw and it might have been i want to give the right people credit might have
14:56been celtics blog or somebody like that but i guess they figured out that they could give lebron
15:00james 15 million they could give him 15 at the mid-level yeah like like a mid-level that's what
15:04the
15:04celtics could afford to give him so it wouldn't be pennies but at the same time it's not anywhere near
15:08what he would make because obviously he's box office but if you're lebron james and you've
15:13already got all the money in the world and you are loaded upon all you don't you think that you
15:18want to shut people the f up in the conversation that you because if you went to four different
15:23teams and every team you went to you want to ring you got to start comparing them to jordan
15:28wouldn't there be a more obvious one that's playing in conference finals now cleveland
15:32you go back to cleveland he's done that he would take less to go to but i think he would
15:37do that
15:37rock and roll hall of fame i don't think he takes less to come to boston like if he goes
15:40to cleveland
15:40that makes that makes sense but but what's what's this is it a guarantee if he goes to cleveland that
15:45he win a championship i don't think that team's better than uh san antonio or they're playing and
15:51we aren't right now you know so yeah but i mean they also don't have yannis they don't have lebron
15:57i just want to see heads explode as i said i root for chaos i would love to see lebron
16:01james in
16:02a celtics jersey just so all the people like me who have thought he was our sworn enemy and just
16:06like
16:06you know you would sell your soul cheering for this team imagine imagine if that actually came
16:10to fruition like i i i think he goes back to the lakers like if he goes anywhere it's either
16:15he ain't
16:15winning it's to cleveland he's not gonna win i want yeah i it would be it would be one hell
16:20of a
16:20thing but i don't see it coming i think he goes back to lost who wins this series by the
16:24way nicks or
16:24calves i would love to see the nicks collapse and just choke in a second year in a row the
16:28nicks are
16:29the best team in the east by a pretty wide margin wow wow they've been sitting a while i mean
16:34but they're
16:34clearly can't contend with the team out of the west though no i i would take whoever wins the
16:40western cop but indiana will speed okc last year if they didn't uh halibut didn't we've talked about
16:46this before i was very unimpressed by the thunder last year like it took two game sevens obviously
16:51the halibutton injury was huge and so was the aaron gordon injury when they played the nuggets i was
16:56really unimpressed but all the other leagues said they were this year top five in defense they
17:00haven't lost a playoff game in there the western conference finals that's insane they attack but
17:04wendy wendy beat him three times in a row in december that wendy and chet thing's gonna be
17:08awesome because they got like this little rivalry going where they genuinely don't like each other
17:12yeah and that that's gonna be fun to watch but if wendy can go if he can beat them like
17:16already he's
17:16already like ascending the way that people kind of pick them to like he's already top five mvp finished
17:21this year obviously has them back after a lottery season last year in the western conference finals
17:26like if they go out and beat the thunder though that changes the conversation of wendy a lot if
17:31lebron james came to the celtics and won a championship i would change my take that kobe
17:36bryant's a better player than lebron james i would be like yeah you're number two and then there's some
17:41people who would put him with michael jordan that like almost like a one a one b because think about
17:46how great it would be is that he was the reason that the the lakers won another banner that got
17:50the
17:50fire under the celtics ass and then he's the one who puts them back in their place by by making
17:54the
17:54difference even larger it it is funny like the whole he is not very well liked like by the lakers
17:59fan they they're such a kobe town they are love kobe yep that they they can't even like really get
18:03behind lebron like that and they're like you know they're all how about sga has now won more mvps
18:08than kobe kobe won one regular season mva but that's my mind that era of basketball though man
18:14steve nash oh there were two layers well steve nash was a god like steve nash i mean did you
18:19ever
18:19see steve nash live it was insane the dude was a wizard the no look passes that he had he
18:24was and
18:25it being like a little guy too and the guy just dominated those sons teams from like the the 2000s
18:31if kobe were alive and he heard you comparing him to steve nash oh no no no i think that
18:35kobe you know
18:36me i told you i think i'm a kobe guy kobe is a straight up killer killer i mean you
18:42hear stories
18:42about how maniacal he was after games and the practices and how he wouldn't we'd show up and he
18:47wouldn't leave after everyone left he he basically bully all of his his teammates to practice late he
18:53was kind of a slave driver the guy was just like i so his work ethic was insane ripping guys
18:59in
18:59practice oh he would and he expected you to match his level that's jordan-esque and i loved that about
19:05him i love that and you know what too he was one of the handful of guys that i've seen
19:09on the court
19:09and i said there's nothing you can do to stop him nothing he can get whatever he wants whenever he
19:15wants yeah second grade is power forward of all time that's what the perk said about him absolutely
19:19all right tim duncan yep uh perked you i'm sorry turp you gotta say by the way will turpin
19:24is the guitarist for collective soul that's why i called you that i was just messing around
19:28with that talk about an insult wow well listen you know he was a dream boat he had chicks all
