I’ve been documenting my Invisalign journey, but I hit a bit of an unexpected bump in the road recently! While I was eating, I suddenly felt a gap in my upper teeth and, as someone who really dislikes dental visits, it definitely caused me some anxiety.
I didn't want to leave it, so I went to see Dr. Shane at Proud Smile in Pacific Fair. It turns out a previous filling had popped out, with some minor decay hiding underneath. Dr. Shane was fantastic—he used a sandblaster to get everything cleaned up and sorted out the issue immediately.
If you’re currently working through your own dental plan and feeling a bit nervous about appointments, I wanted to share this to show that even when things go wrong, they can be fixed quickly and comfortably. Thanks for following along with my progress!

00:07Okay, now I'm going to pop my aligners in next.
00:26Okay, we're in. Okay, so I'm super nervous. I'm really, really, really nervous. Okay, so the reason I've just lost
00:39my...
00:39I usually only floss my teeth once a day, just before bedtime, not in the morning.
00:44But the reason I've been super fastidious just then is because I'm going for an unplanned dental dessert.
00:52So anyone that's been following my dental journey knows that I'm on an Invisalign plan.
00:57So I've got my aligners in now, and this white gunk that you can see here is tooth mousse.
01:02So I put GC tooth mousse in there because that's got xylitol in it, and it's got minerals that can
01:08help sort of keep your teeth.
01:09Hopefully cavity-free while you're doing the Invisalign journey.
01:14And I've probably got white gunk everywhere, but no, I think it's all right.
01:19But anyway, so I'm on... I had a revision with the Invisalign plan.
01:24So I'm on week 10 of a new 13-week plan.
01:27But I'm taking about two weeks per aligner instead of one week.
01:33So I'm still looking at about six weeks to go.
01:38Anyway, the other day I had that sinking feeling.
01:41Look, anyone that has feelings will be able to relate to this.
01:44And it's just... When it happens, it is the worst nightmare.
01:48Basically, I mean, it's not a catastrophic thing, but I don't know yet whether it will be or not.
01:53But a couple of years ago, I did get some molars at the top left corner repaired all at once
02:01under gas, actually.
02:02Three large molars here at the back.
02:04And that was traumatic, to say the least.
02:08And new white fillings were put in.
02:10And I was told at the time that dentists did say that I could be looking at crowns here
02:16because a lot of the tooth is filling and I was also warned that they're not going to last forever.
02:22Anyway, lo and behold, two days ago, I, all of a sudden, you know when your tongue just all of
02:28a sudden finds this gaping gap.
02:31I mean, it's... So it's not a massive hole or anything.
02:34It might just be... Best case scenario will be that I've chipped a little bit of the white filling off.
02:41That would be best case scenario.
02:43And if that's the case, it could just be a polish off so there's not a jagged edge
02:48because basically there's a new nasty jagged edge at the back, at the very back tooth.
02:54So it's the worst possible tooth as well because to get to it, you have to have your mouth wide
02:58open
02:58and the dentist is going to have to go all the way back and go off.
03:01That's the best case scenario.
03:03Worst case scenario is I've cracked the whole filling and then the whole filling will have to be repaired.
03:10Actually, that's the medium case scenario.
03:12The worst, worst case scenario would be that the actual tooth structure has been compromised.
03:20So then I don't know what will happen then.
03:23But anyway, I've got a trip to the dentist now.
03:27It's been two days of just...
03:29I tried to make the appointment as early as possible,
03:31but they couldn't see me the day it happened or yesterday.
03:34So it's today.
03:37But it's been sleeplessness, it's been like waking up at one o'clock in the morning
03:41and the first thing I think about when I wake up is that and my tongue goes to it all
03:46the time
03:46and I'm just so scared of the dentist's chair and I have got quite bad teeth.
03:51I wasn't told to brush when I was younger.
03:55So dental issues for me, for my whole life, has been just this ongoing thing.
04:02And just when this happened, I thought, I never want to go to the dentist again.
04:07The like is just on and on and on.
04:09And like I nearly cry, I'm that scared.
04:12And anyway, so I'm really nervous.
04:15But anyway, we're going in.
04:17So obviously the first step will be the dentist will look to see what's going on.
04:21Because obviously I can't see, even though in the mirror I have been opening my mouth.
04:25Well, I'm trying to see how bad is this whatever's happened there.
04:28But anyway, we're going into Proud Smile, which is the dental practice I'm going to
04:33with my whole Invisalign journey.
04:35And we'll see the dentist and obviously we'll go from there.
04:38But my appointment today is long enough that he will be able to do some sort of repair if it's
04:44needed.
04:45So let's go.
04:56Okay, I'm here in the waiting room.
04:58I can't hear any bruise.
05:00That's the worst, sitting in a dentist's waiting area and we're here in the machinery.
05:06There's a genuinely scary sound.
05:09But my heart's pounding a bit.
05:12And I just kind of just hope it's not too much.
05:16My bruise, that the damage isn't too bad.
05:19I'm Dr. Shane.
05:20I'll be looking after you today.
05:22Thank you so very much.
05:24And we've got the lovely Rommie giving us a hand to me today.
05:28I need lots of hands.
05:29I need lots of general anaesthetic.
05:31Get comfortable.
05:32I am brilliant.
05:35So yeah, what brings you into that?
05:37Oh, okay.
05:38So a couple of days ago, I got that sinking feeling that I think there's a bit of...
05:44So I had three large molars at the back of your head a couple of years ago.
05:48Yeah.
05:49And so there's a lot of white filling.
05:51You'll see that for yourself.
05:52Yeah.
05:52And I think it was after I'd bit into something that my tongue then found something new.
05:58No.
05:59I know.
06:00So I don't know.
06:02I mean, it's not a massive hole.
06:04I don't think in my cheekbones.
06:05I don't think of massive chunks.
06:07Yeah.
06:07But it's a little bit that my tongue then feels...
06:09Scratch off.
06:10Oh, I suppose best case scenario is just a tiny bit that I don't know.
06:15So there till we go and look in.
06:17Is it sensitive to anything like hot, cold, chewing, doesn't keep you up at night time?
06:22It's not.
06:23Like thankfully there's no pain at all.
06:25Yeah.
06:26And I had sharp teeth on this side of my...
06:28Sharp edges on this side of my teeth at one point that was just wear and tear.
06:32Yeah.
06:32That I thought at one point might have been a cheekbone or something, but it was just my tooth.
06:36Yeah, yeah.
06:37So I mean...
06:38Hopefully teeth crossed.
06:39Yeah, hopefully there's nothing wrong.
06:40I don't think so.
06:42And what's the story with the Invisalign?
06:45How long has it happened?
06:46So I've got juicy tooth mousse in the Invisalign at the end.
06:50So that's all you can see.
06:51It's gunky and yucky.
06:54But basically I was on an original plan of 19 weeks, but then I had a revision.
06:58So now I'm on a 13-week plan.
07:00Yeah.
07:00And I'm at 40-10.
07:01Oh, nice.
07:02But I'll take a little bit longer.
07:03I'll take about two weeks per...
07:05Yeah.
07:06Just because my daytime complains in this position.
07:10Yeah, no, that's so bad.
07:11Oh, yeah.
07:11It gets hard, doesn't it?
07:13It is hard.
07:14It's hard because I'm so over the back.
07:16They've straightened out a lot of them.
07:18Yeah.
07:18By heaps.
07:19What was the indication for it?
07:21Was it more cosmetic or functional?
07:23No, function for me.
07:25Yeah.
07:25And malocclusion.
07:26Yeah, malocclusion.
07:27That's the word, isn't it?
07:28Yes.
07:28Yeah.
07:29Yeah.
07:29And I'm just...
07:30What was happening is I was biting a lot on my tongue and inside my chest.
07:34Oh, yeah.
07:35And I was getting a little white lesion on my tongue.
07:38Yeah.
07:38Trauma, biting.
07:40And so just really...
07:41I think it was triggered worse after these were repaired.
07:45So I think maybe that caused a bit of a change.
07:48Shift in the...
07:48But I've had dentists three years before that mention that I don't have a very good...
07:54Bite.
07:54Yeah.
07:55Yeah.
07:55Now, I'm just going to check it out.
07:57But it's definitely improved.
07:58Yeah.
08:00Do you think you have any recent x-rays?
08:03Oh, and that's another thing.
08:05I'm so against x-rays.
08:07Like, I...
08:07Oh, okay.
08:08Yeah, yeah.
08:08Yeah, if I can avoid...
08:09Because in the lead-up to this whole Invisalign, Jeff...
08:13Yeah.
08:13I had a billion.
08:15I actually went to...
08:16Maybe not quite a billion.
08:17Maybe it's only a million.
08:18But I went to heaps of dental practices trying to find a really good fit, basically.
08:23Yeah.
08:24And this was the place.
08:25Oh, I see.
08:26Yeah, I was so happy to find that one.
08:28What was one about here?
08:29But I just...
08:30I just did.
08:31I went to another practice, I can't remember the name of it now, but they were...
08:36I think they were a more budget one here on the Gold Coast, but they wouldn't even take
08:40me on.
08:41They set off a bit too comprehensive.
08:43But I had x-rays there.
08:44I had x-rays at another place trying to find a dentist that could do this one.
08:48Yeah, yeah.
08:49Yeah, we don't want to be growing another eye.
08:51I mean, yeah, definitely.
08:52I'm being a bit worried about the radiation, so I'd avoid if I don't.
08:55Yeah, if it's safe for me to go ahead and not take it, I won't.
08:59I'll do everything I can, but if I have to.
09:02If there's like a deep sunbreak or something, you won't.
09:04Please don't.
09:05Yeah.
09:05I won't put any too bad juju out into the universe for you, but yeah, we'll play it by ear
09:12and go from there.
09:13Okay.
09:13Perfect.
09:14So you probably want these out, don't you?
09:16I'll take them.
09:16Yeah, yeah.
09:16You can chuck them on the tray for me there.
09:19Can I grab a pair of disposable gloves to take them out with?
09:21Yeah, of course.
09:22Because that just grips, like, yeah, thank you.
09:24Oh, did they give you the tools?
09:26They did.
09:27Does it work for you?
09:28No.
09:29And I don't use it, really.
09:31I just, these, I have a box of disposable gloves at home.
09:34Just standing like it's, yeah, perfect.
09:36And they just give you grit, like, then you can actually pull, yeah, and you can pull them
09:40that easy.
09:41But I wear GC2 mousse in them to, um.
09:44Perfect.
09:45I don't have to worry about cavities.
09:47But I am paranoid about cavities.
09:49And, because I didn't brush my teeth when I was young and I wasn't torn.
09:53Yeah, yeah.
09:54I blame the parents.
09:56No, it is their fault.
09:57It is their fault, yeah.
09:59So, oh, thank you.
10:01It looks like your mouth is such a sensitive part of your body.
10:04It is.
10:04It's so firm, how it's from looks and everything.
10:07So it's very normal to be paranoid about them, but it's a good thing, if anything.
10:14So I really do want to look after them, obviously.
10:18But I am scared of what you'll find and what the repair and all.
10:23And to be here and have a good chat after.
10:27But no, I'm not in pain at all.
10:32Sorry about my hair.
10:34It's all good.
10:34Did you do anything on the weekend?
10:37Yes, I do.
10:38My daughter's birthday.
10:40Happy birthday to her.
10:42Yes, I've got a party set.
10:44What's on the agenda?
10:45A party escape room.
10:48Oh, nice.
10:49Yeah.
10:49And then a party, so she's got her friends all coming in.
10:52Oh, that's beautiful.
10:52Yeah.
10:53How old is she?
10:5413.
10:56So 51.
10:57Yeah, a teenager.
10:58Yeah.
11:00So she's got all the prezzies at home.
11:03Yeah, what's she getting?
11:04Oh, nice things.
11:06Like she's getting her new ear pods as sort of a big one.
11:11But then I went to a really nice gift shop here on the blog post.
11:14Yeah, yeah.
11:14And just got her some nice things, like some girly things.
11:17Yeah, yeah.
11:18Nice jewellery and a nice robe and, um, yeah, just-
11:23All the girly stuff.
11:24Nice.
11:27I'm sure she'll love that.
11:29What is the bottom?
11:30Yeah.
11:31And at the top, the very back one.
11:34Ah, yeah.
11:34Yeah.
11:44What can you say?
11:45Anything?
11:46Not straight away.
11:51Oh, it's gonna be pink.
11:52No.
11:54No.
11:58No.
11:58No.
11:59No.
12:00No.
12:00No.
12:00No.
12:07No.
12:07We're pushy.
12:10Just like this, at the top of the brain.
12:12Yeah, yeah.
12:15And it's like this.
12:17And it's like a plan, it's like a plan.
12:28Yeah.
12:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:32Oh really? Yeah, you've got a hole in that one. The good thing is it's a small one.
12:43Is it? Yeah, it's not close to the nerve. We can do that one for you today.
12:49Yeah, the resistance is there. Oh no! So is it a new part of tooth? So is it not an
12:56existing filling that's a problem?
12:58Is it a new part that's developed? It looks like a new part. I can't tell if it has had
13:03a filling before.
13:05Oh, and it's fallen out. Yeah, but it's a very straightforward one.
13:11Is it? Okay, very straightforward. We will have to numb you up a little bit.
13:15Oh yes, that's fine. But it's not a massively long hours long. No!
13:21Okay. It's on your wisdom tooth back there.
13:24Oh right. I've been using tooth mousse though. I don't understand.
13:29That's usually why. I'll just grab a chair. Yeah.
13:32Um, usually we recommend for wisdom teeth that are so far back. Yeah.
13:38Just like, have them out. Have them out. Yeah, that's usually why. But, um, look.
13:48It's very small. We've done a great job. I wouldn't beat myself up over that.
13:53Okay. On a wisdom tooth.
13:56Oh, all right. Well, look, I'm so grateful we can just get...
13:59Oh, that's a good show to have. Can we keep watching that?
14:02Really? I've just got to say.
14:03No, no. I'm holding up. If you're happy with that.
14:05I am. I am.
14:06We'll pop some headphones on for you.
14:08Oh, thanks. Yeah.
14:09You know there's a medical show happening up there and someone's just lost his leg.
14:12So I can actually watch that and think I can't.
14:15Exactly.
14:16I haven't lost my leg.
14:18It's not as bad.
14:19Oh, thank you.
14:20Perfect.
14:21It's all about perspective, isn't it?
14:23Oh, that's great.
14:25Perfect.
14:27One, one, two, three.
14:30Some numbing cream.
14:31Okay.
14:32You should come in the garden.
14:35Yeah.
14:35There we go.
14:56Is that comfortable there?
15:03Yeah.
15:03There we go.
15:04Ah.
15:05Ah.
15:07Do you like this?
15:09Vaseline.
15:10Yes.
15:11Oh, yeah.
15:12Fuck.
15:13Yeah, I think.
15:14Do you make it?
15:15Yeah.
15:15Just some Vaseline.
15:17Ah, okay.
15:39Do you have a big stretch here.
15:41Ooh.
15:42Just keep the film really dry.
15:44Find the lips out of the way.
15:50Okay.
15:52Good.
15:54Good.
15:58Good.
15:59Good.
16:00Good.
16:00Good.
16:02Good.
16:03Good.
16:03Good.
16:13I know it's a big squeeze
16:22Almost there
16:33I know it's a big squeeze
17:03Just a little bit of shaking
17:08You're doing really well
17:16You okay?
17:19Pop your hand up if you need a break at any time
17:42I know it's a big squeeze
17:59I know it's a big squeeze
18:49I know it's a big squeeze
19:13I know it's a big squeeze
19:18I know it's a big squeeze
19:21I know it's a big squeeze
25:22All right.
25:44All right.
26:15All right.
26:17How does that feel to your tongue?
26:21It feels good to bite down?
26:23Oh yeah, it feels fine with my tongue.
26:25Yeah.
26:25Perfect.
26:26Yeah, it feels fine to bite down.
26:28Perfect.
26:30I can't feel any high bits.
26:34Yeah.
26:34When they were first repaired, I do remember I did feel a bit high.
26:38Yeah, yeah.
26:39Yeah.
26:40I mean, I'll just bite for a couple of minutes, but I mean, but, you know, I think.
26:46It's good on the paper too.
26:48Does it?
26:48Yeah.
26:49I do remember though at the time I did say, yeah, yeah, that's fine.
26:51But then I went home, but.
26:53If you do, come back in.
26:56Well, I'm back here in two weeks anyway.
26:58Oh, perfect.
26:59Yeah.
26:59Actually, if the trays fit, then we know.
27:04Oh, right.
27:05Yeah.
27:05Good idea.
27:06But I don't think.
27:06I don't know.
27:07I could always feel that little bit of tooth just outside the trays.
27:12Actually, I don't need a tray.
27:13Oh, it doesn't.
27:14Yeah, yeah.
27:15You're right.
27:16But no.
27:16That feels fine.
27:18Yeah.
27:18Thank you so much.
27:19That was great.
27:20So, didn't you use an injection?
27:23No, I did.
27:23Oh, you did?
27:24Yeah.
27:25Did you not do it?
27:25That's why I said I couldn't tell.
27:27You were anxious because you didn't even.
27:29I was lying here like shaking.
27:31I thought I'm going to exude everyone else with my teeth.
27:35No, no.
27:35And then you said a bit of abrasion or something, but there was no sound.
27:40You did something.
27:41Is that a soundless drill?
27:42What was that?
27:43Oh, no, no.
27:44It did, yeah.
27:45But then I did feel the clunky, or it felt clunky.
27:48Yeah.
27:49That was the drill, wasn't it?
27:50Yeah, yeah.
27:51So, what was the bit before that?
27:53We used, it's called a sandblaster.
27:55Oh, right.
27:55So, it's just to clean off all the debris and all the gun material.
28:00So, it has a really nice clean surface.
28:02Because that didn't, that was nothing.
28:04That thing that you used first.
28:05Yeah.
28:06Couldn't hear it.
28:07There was no scary sound.
28:09Yeah.
28:09But the second one.
28:10Yeah.
28:11Yeah.
28:12Yeah.
28:14Okay, well, yeah.
28:16I do think that's fine.
28:18Just really want to make sure it's not any higher than the other one.
28:21Yeah, definitely.
28:22But you really do think it looks fine on paper?
28:24Yeah, on paper, it looks good.
28:27Okay, yep.
28:28That's fine.
28:28If not, yeah, we can come back in.
28:31Yeah.
28:32No, that feels fine.
28:33Oh, thank you so much.
28:34I still don't understand how the K could have gotten there.
28:37Yeah, I'm so fastidious about cleaning and I have xylitol mints.
28:41Yeah, I know.
28:43It's so pesky wisdom teeth.
28:44That's why they always, when you usually take them out when it's hard to keep coming back
28:50there.
28:50Yeah.
28:50It's a very smart thing to do with.
28:53That was, you were very quick.
28:55I really appreciate it.
28:55Yeah, very nice.
28:56And actually the Vaseline was really helpful.
28:58It did?
28:59Yeah.
28:59Yeah, because when you put that thing in.
29:00Because I have had sometimes, after a trip to the dentist, I've had little cuts.
29:05Yeah, yeah.
29:06That's true.
29:06That was fine.
29:08Yeah, perfect.
29:09Thank you very much.
29:10That was my travel and all.
29:12That is all good.
29:14Oh, yes.
29:15Thank you very much.
29:16I didn't even feel the needle.
29:17So, just normal now.
29:19I don't have to be careful.
29:19No.
29:20Only just start potting cool stuff or try and avoid burning yourself.
29:24Yeah.
29:25I better remember my laundry trees.
29:27Yeah.
29:28But otherwise, you know, you can get them.
29:31It's all set.
29:32You have to go.
29:34I'll put this top on here just to see if you can.
29:40Perfect.
29:42No worries.
29:43Okay, well that's a real relief, obviously, to have that done.
29:47So, that was my worst nightmare.
29:50There was some decay and I did have to have the drill.
29:53That really is what I'm the most scared of.
29:56But in terms of a filling, that was really, really mild.
30:00Like, that was obviously not too deep.
30:04There was just a little bit of decay for Dr. Shane to get rid of.
30:07It wasn't anything like a really deep drilling, like all the way down to near where the root
30:12is or anything like that.
30:13So, in terms of a filling, that was very, very manageable for someone that's scared of dentists, which I am.
30:22I was really disappointed, though, that there was some decay.
30:25Because I really do have a very good dental routine and I have xylitol mints and I use GC tooth
30:32mints,
30:32which is meant to try and help with early decay and sort of re-mineralize your teeth.
30:40And then I asked Dr. Shane why I felt a little deep then, because I did feel it.
30:45And he thinks that there was a filling there.
30:48And it started to get a little bit of decay and then it came out.
30:52So, that's why I then immediately felt that little crevice or hole.
30:58So, anyway, I was shaking when I was in the dentist's care.
31:01At the end when he said, I couldn't even tell you were anxious, I actually thought he said,
31:06we could all tell you were anxious.
31:08And I said, yeah, I exuded out.
31:11But that's good.
31:12But a couple of new things that I don't think I've...
31:14I mean, I might have had it before, but the Vaseline around the mouth when they put that big thing
31:21in your mouth,
31:21that did help, because I have sometimes had dental procedures where I've had little cuts against my lips,
31:27which has really hurt, basically, and they hurt for ages afterwards.
31:31And then also that sandblaster that he did at the beginning, that was fine.
31:36Like, that didn't cause any tooth sensitivity or anything.
31:40I did feel the drill.
31:41I did feel some sensitivity there, and I thought, oh, if the drill goes on for much longer,
31:46I'm going to have to ask for more numbing, because I can feel it.
31:50But, I mean, it didn't last for long at all.
31:52Dr. Shane was very quick.
31:53It was really, really quick, really efficient.
31:56And, to be honest, almost as bad as the drill was at the end when they were levelling off the
32:02filling,
32:02because that's also a sort of a braiding machine that you can feel against your teeth,
32:07and it's that vibration and all that.
32:09So, anyway, another trip to the dentist down, and, oh, these horrible aligners.
32:15I can't even talk properly sometimes with them in.
32:17So, I got the last two, though, today, which is useful.
32:21But I'm still coming in for a revision, just to see that the teeth are tracking properly.
32:29And, yeah, so, but still, this is the end of the plan that I'm on at the moment, two more
32:34here.
32:34So, I'm getting to the end of that.
32:36And the other thing I wanted to say, actually, about teeth at the top.
32:39A dentist has told me in the past that I think the teeth at the top are harder than the
32:44teeth at the bottom,
32:45because saliva and gravity obviously go down.
32:48So, I guess saliva is your best friend when it comes to fighting any sort of decay,
32:53because saliva is what's remineralising your teeth in that beautiful, natural way.
32:58And so, I think the bottom teeth get more of that saliva just, I think, by gravity.
33:03And I think the top teeth can tend to get a bit drier.
33:06So, perhaps that's maybe why, I mean, I think I do have bigger issues on the top.
33:13But, anyway, I'm just rambling because I've just been so nervous.
33:17But, anyway, that's over and done with now.
33:20And just I'll keep looking after my teeth as best I can.
33:23And I'm nearly at the end of my misaligned journey.
33:26Namely!
33:26.
