Hello everyone! I’m back at the dentist, and I’m excited to share my latest visit with Dr. Michael Sempf at GC Dental Solutions in Helensvale, Gold Coast, now on Dailymotion!

In this video, I’m sharing my journey to address malocclusion—where my lower jaw is wider than my upper jaw, leading to misaligned teeth. Beyond aesthetics, malocclusion can cause tooth decay, gum disease, jaw pain, or even TMJ disorders if not treated.

With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Sempf used cutting-edge 3D scanning technology to explain how my bite impacts my oral health. Fixing it will simplify cleaning, lower cavity risks, ease jaw strain, and boost my confidence with a straighter smile! Dr. Sempf’s expertise and care put me at ease, and he referred me to a skilled orthodontist in Robina to discuss options like braces or clear aligners. Great news: no new decay—my dental habits are working!

Dr. Sempf and GC Dental Solutions are fantastic, and I’m thrilled to document my dental journey. Watch the full video on Dailymotion and follow along for a healthier smile!

00:00So I'm here at the dentist again. This time I'm seeing Gold Coast Dental Solutions Dental
00:06Specialist, Dr. Michael Semp. And today is going to be all about getting this bite looked
00:11at, like sort of, and really need it aligned. And there's a lot of health benefits to getting
00:16your bite fixed, including better oral health. And at the moment I'm biting quite frequently
00:21on my tongue and the inside of my lip. So let's see what Dr. Semp has to say about the
00:27benefits of getting all this fixed and your teeth aligned.
00:57I am pretty good at the dentist now, only because I respect it so much and I really,
01:06really want good dental health because it is awful not being able to chew properly. And
01:12I mean, you know, so I've got browning teeth as well, but I'm mostly here for the bite today
01:18because it has been earmarked that I've just, what's it called, macular occlusion or something?
01:23Oh, malocclusion.
01:24Malocclusion. And even in my 20s, dentists were pointing out, I've always had a wobbly jaw,
01:28you know, I'm sure you know, there's, I don't know, it's just, I was, I used to be able
01:33to joke to my hubby when we were even dating that look what I can do with my jaw. So it's
01:39bad. And basically, obviously it's just gotten worse and worse I think. And since I had a bit
01:45of a, um, restoration with three, um, feelings or teeth sort of fixed up or, you know, feelings
01:52changed or whatever, it's just sort of gone downhill fast, the bite I think. So I'm biting
01:58that my, this side of my lip, side of my tongue, and I had a little white spot coming on my tongue
02:05that I was warned that if it's repeated trauma it could turn into something really nasty.
02:10My throat cancer, which I don't want. And, and so basically the, I know there's a cosmetic
02:16side to having a nice smile as well, which is lovely, but a hundred percent like at the
02:21moment that's pretty low. What's really high on my priority list is being able to just
02:27have health to live. Basically I want to be able to chew a nut, you know, yeah. I want to
02:34be able to chew a steak properly. Yeah. And, and not take forever and not be favouring sides
02:39and, and then not grind and not make uneven wear and all of that. Yeah, sure. So there's a
02:43concern that they're crooked and not lining up properly. Yes, which I'm sure you will see.
02:48Yeah. They, they are, they are pretty bad. Yeah. So, yeah. Um. Yeah, it's pretty, it's pretty,
02:53an ortho problem and ortho solution. We'll have the place look soon. Just plays together. Yeah, I was warned
02:58that I probably need a, um, a referral to see someone. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, do you have a scan
03:05or something that you could, like, or even something to, like, um, or what would you,
03:11what would you suggest? I'd have a close look, yeah. Yeah. At first glance, it's really an ortho problem.
03:15It's, it's sort of hard to say to look inside. Yeah, yeah. But what I can see right now, yeah,
03:19it's obviously some crowding, it's probably a cross-bite issue, anything like lining up properly.
03:23So, that probably won't be an implant solution. It would be an ortho solution. Yeah. But, um,
03:28let's look inside first now. Yeah. Please don't find any more issues. Sure. And the, the filling,
03:34you said the bite feels different afterwards? Is that? Well, I, I mean, it was for a little bit,
03:39but then I did get it filed down again. Yeah. So, so that, so that in itself isn't causing any problems.
03:44And I've got no pain anywhere or anything like that. Yeah, sure. But it is, it is that issue where, um,
03:51where I have noticed that I'm, I'm biting the lip and the tongue more often. Yeah.
03:56I understand. So anything like Invisalign or? Yeah. I'll get a tooth scan, not an x-ray,
04:01a tooth scan that'll show your teeth, top and bottom and how they align. That would be awesome.
04:05And that would be a good place to know, yeah. And are you able to do a referral from that? Of course, yeah.
04:08Definitely, yeah. And those scans that you take today, will they go with me to? Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
04:12Oh, that's great. Because he wanted to take, um, I, I have local dentists too,
04:17but more x-rays, but I've had a lot of x-rays. Oh, yeah. I should need that for today's conversation.
04:22Um, if you, if you do go to treatment with them, they would get signed for their cleaning.
04:26But for today's chat, it's probably not necessary, so.
04:29With a tooth scan, just a photo, that's a very fancy photo. Oh, it's a very fancy photo.
04:34Oh, yeah, that's fine. I'm so nervous, opening my mouth for a dentist.
04:46Oh, yeah. Because I have rarely had good news.
04:53Oh, the people who come to me are normally so broken down and disastrous.
04:59I hope not. I, I, look, I have tried over the years since I became aware of the problems.
05:05That's all. So close together from it, straight down, and bite together all the way to the touch.
05:12We'll get it open by two inches.
05:15And back again. And close again.
05:20Let's get our two out there. Okay.
05:24Okay.
05:25So, just for study, we'll probably send it on to the auto.
05:29And that's from there. And then bite together.
05:36So, yeah, if I don't get any solution.
05:44The anything it does is they try to keep that in contact.
05:47Mmmmm.
05:49And I am.
05:50How's that white spot on my tongue?
05:51I, I've trained myself not to bite it.
05:52So hopefully it's not even there.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Yeah.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Yeah.
05:58Yeah.
05:59Yeah.
06:00Yeah.
06:01Yeah.
06:02Yeah.
06:03Yeah.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Yeah.
06:06Yeah.
06:07Yeah.
06:08Yeah.
06:09Yeah.
06:10Yeah.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Yeah.
06:13Yeah.
06:14Yeah.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Yeah.
06:17Yeah.
06:18Yeah.
06:19Yeah.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Yeah.
06:22Yeah.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Yeah.
06:25So your, your lower jaw is slightly wider than your top jaw.
06:29So normally your top teeth line like so.
06:31And that top tooth lines the cheek out.
06:34So your lower back teeth in edge to edge.
06:36Oh.
06:37That's why you can't have your cheek all the time.
06:39That's.
06:40Oh.
06:41I'll show you this again.
06:42Yeah.
06:43That's interesting to hear anatomically what's going on.
06:45Yeah.
06:46Because now I am always interested in what's actually going on.
06:49Yeah.
06:50So I can understand it.
06:51Yeah, sure.
06:52Oh, thank you.
06:53It'll be pretty clear on that.
06:54Yeah.
06:55Awesome.
06:56It's kind of like knowledge is power to be honest.
06:57Like you feel a little bit more better about what you're doing.
07:00Yeah, sure.
07:01Because you know what's going on.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Cool.
07:05Where do you guys live?
07:06Which subject?
07:07Yeah, I was going to ask for it as close as possible.
07:08Yeah.
07:09Yeah.
07:10Yeah.
07:11Yeah.
07:12Yeah.
07:13Probably.
07:14I've got a really good light in.
07:15Is that too far away?
07:16No.
07:17And I would like a good referral.
07:18Yeah.
07:19If you know someone that you're happy with.
07:20Yeah.
07:21Awesome.
07:22Oh, thank you.
07:23A little scan.
07:24Top teeth, lower teeth and together.
07:25And you'll be able to see it on 3D.
07:27It's really good.
07:29I'm looking forward to it.
07:32Yeah.
07:33I haven't scanned my teeth to be honest.
07:34I've just had x-rays.
07:36Yeah.
07:37And this, I have seen the scan results though.
07:40Like it's a good.
07:41Yeah.
07:42So this is imaging of your teeth.
07:43Yeah.
07:44But it just takes lots of little photos and puts it on the screen.
07:47Yeah.
07:48So I'll give you these too.
07:49Because it depends how I bite as well.
07:51Like I can bite in all sorts of different ways.
07:53Yes.
07:54When I'm eating watermelon too.
07:55Like that's, that's soft watermelon and a couple of other foods.
08:00Whenever I'm chewing those, I always bite down the leg.
08:03When I'm chewing things like that, it's uncomfortable.
08:05I know.
08:06And it hurts.
08:07And then you've got a toddler being needy and it's like,
08:09Oh, that was the last thing I needed.
08:12So I'll get you to lay back.
08:14Yep.
08:15And this is the little camera that takes lots of photos.
08:18Oh yeah.
08:19And puts it all together.
08:20Just lay back.
08:21I'll do the bottom jaw first.
08:23Okay.
08:24It's a little bit tricky with your tongue.
08:26So you can just let me know if you want me to stop at any time.
08:29But I'll just be pushing it out of the lane.
08:31Oh yeah.
08:32If you want a break.
08:33No, no.
08:34That's fine.
08:35Yeah.
08:36I'm going to pull your legs as well.
08:50I'm going to go right back.
08:51You can just let me know if you want me to stop.
08:55And then the same on this side.
08:56It's going to be a bit of a squish.
08:57So if it feels uncomfortable, I can pop out at any time.
08:58I'm going to go right back.
08:59You can just let me know if you want me to stop.
09:00And then the same on this side.
09:01It's going to be a bit of a squish.
09:02So if it feels uncomfortable, you can pop out at any time.
09:05You can just let me know if you want me to stop and then the same on this side, it's
09:20going to be a bit of a squish so if he feels uncomfortable just so I can pop out at any
09:25time.
09:26You're doing really well there, it's hard to get around the back of it.
09:31I'm going to stay at the bottom one first because it's messed up on top.
09:41I'm going to get a little bit more of this one here.
09:59I'm going to try to get the back corner of this back one, you can close a little bit
10:23there if you want.
10:24That's excellent.
10:25Okay, I'll just take that and have a look, I'll show you what I've got so far.
10:30Thank you for that.
10:31Oh no, thank you.
10:32It's a bit of a stretch up the back.
10:34So that's what we end up with doing.
10:36Oh yeah.
10:37The bottom teeth, so obviously that needs to be just around that way.
10:39Alright, that's really cool.
10:40I mean my teeth aren't cool but the picket fence.
10:42Well it's always interesting to see.
10:44Well it is, that's amazing.
10:46I've honestly never seen a picture yet, that is my teeth.
10:49So that's just a little bit of missing data, the blue.
10:52Oh right.
10:53So I'm just going to pop back in and fill that in.
10:55Oh right.
10:56But yeah.
10:57That's my teeth, a picket fence.
10:59Yeah.
11:00They've gotten worse those ones and that one's almost hidden now, like that one there.
11:06Yeah.
11:07It's an interesting way to see it.
11:08Wow.
11:09It is.
11:10To get those areas that we've missed.
11:12Yeah.
11:13It's better.
11:14So that's your bite.
11:17Oh wow.
11:19The burples just each side scan.
11:22Yeah.
11:23So I've just processed that now and I'll show it.
11:25Oh that is so cool.
11:27Yeah.
11:28Wow.
11:29That is epic.
11:31And um, tooth whitening.
11:34You do do tooth whitening here, don't you?
11:37Yes.
11:38There's two ways you can do it.
11:39You can do it in-sharing.
11:40Yeah.
11:41We have a lot of machine.
11:42What about those whitening strips that you get from Priceline?
11:44They're not as a fit.
11:47You normally would need a tray that's customated to use.
11:51Yeah.
11:52Because I do use the whitening strips sometimes.
11:54Yeah.
11:55But they do teeth really sensitive.
11:57Yeah.
11:58Bleaching does as well.
11:59Um, whitening in-sharing as well or take home bleaching kits can be sensitive.
12:03Oh wow.
12:04See that, that top there.
12:06Is that where my teeth should have lined in on?
12:09Yeah.
12:10Yeah.
12:11Oh.
12:12That's, oh thank you so much for that.
12:14Yeah.
12:15Oh that's, yeah no, that's great.
12:17That's so interesting.
12:18That really is my teeth.
12:19Wow.
12:20That cosmetic dentist would probably really get upset looking at that.
12:25That little one's quite bad.
12:26Yeah.
12:27That's fine.
12:28That's fine.
12:29Isn't that not gross?
12:30Yeah.
12:31It could also have problems there.
12:32You think they should be touching together.
12:33See that that's called an open bite.
12:34Right.
12:35Yeah.
12:36Yeah.
12:37So they, they, so they really should be touching.
12:40Yeah.
12:41Or a normal good bite.
12:42Yeah.
12:43Yeah.
12:44Yeah.
12:45So, so how come mine aren't?
12:46Do you think it's.
12:47Just the way you're wired together.
12:48Yeah.
12:49Yeah.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Yeah.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Yeah.
12:54Yeah.
12:55Yeah.
12:56Yeah.
12:57Yeah.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Yeah.
13:00Yeah.
13:01Yeah.
13:02Yeah.
13:03Yeah.
13:04Yeah.
13:05Yeah.
13:06Yeah.
13:07Yeah.
13:08Yeah.
13:09I know when I'm eating something like watermelon.
13:10Yeah.
13:11That's when I'm most likely to bite the, my lip or the inside.
13:13No.
13:14I'm not sure.
13:15Yeah.
13:16So I'm not sure why.
13:17They're soft.
13:18Yeah.
13:19I guess maybe the back doesn't have enough padding to be chewing something solid or something.
13:22The watermelon doesn't give it enough and so they just whack down.
13:25Yeah.
13:26But yeah, that's definitely also got problems there.
13:28And what, what do you think the ortho will, will do like?
13:32Yeah.
13:33Yeah.
13:34I mean, they may, may, I don't know, they may opt to take me to the other side and bottom
13:39to bring them back.
13:40Oh, really?
13:41They'll be, it requires some planning to make that decision.
13:43So I can't decide that right now, but then I'll look at it.
13:46But.
13:47If you're a patient in my situation, could you request and to try another solution before
13:54removing it?
13:55Yeah, it's not my call.
13:57I don't want to lose that.
13:58I'm just saying it's a little bit.
14:00No, I appreciate all the information.
14:04Yeah, yeah.
14:05Doctor, the goal is to get that closed.
14:07Right.
14:08And what are the benefits then of getting that closed?
14:11Well, it should be.
14:13Yeah, that should be.
14:14Yeah, they're sharing the pressure around all the arch.
14:16Anyways, right now, all your contacts on, you know, there's a row of teeth on the side.
14:19Yeah.
14:20There's no contact on the canines at all.
14:22See that?
14:23Yeah.
14:24So on a typical bite, when you clench together and then go sideways, the canine should be
14:28right across my mother, but they should be sliding across.
14:31Oh, right.
14:32Canine guidance.
14:33And you've got to know the canine guidance because they don't touch.
14:35So when you grind solubators, what you're doing is just grinding flat for the back seat.
14:39Yeah.
14:40So it's a functional benefit and an aesthetic benefit.
14:43Yeah.
14:44Is it a me job?
14:45No, it's not.
14:46That's another solution.
14:47But I'm still glad to get you doing this proper scan and also referring somewhere good that
14:53you know of.
14:54Yeah, for sure.
14:55Because word of mouth and having a good referral is everything because I don't know who's around.
14:58I don't know.
14:59Just the guy.
15:00He's a rapiner.
15:01Very nice guy.
15:02Very skillful.
15:03One of the big practices.
15:05Yeah, and that's someone who needs the proper expertise to do their job.
15:10It's quite complex.
15:11Yeah.
15:12I would definitely do it.
15:13I would hesitate.
15:14I would delay.
15:15Yeah.
15:16Well, I have been waking up with really severe headaches.
15:19I've been blaming that on chronic lack of sleep because my two and a half year old still
15:24has not slept through sick all night.
15:26I've got one too.
15:27It's fun, isn't it?
15:28Yeah.
15:29Kind of.
15:30Kind of fun on some days.
15:34Yeah.
15:35So, and the headaches are kind of, yeah.
15:40Could I be grinding in the night or something?
15:42It looks like you probably are, but that's all I can see is the grinding history, so you've
15:47done a bit of damage there.
15:48So, I mean, when you get this done, you probably want to get a garden aid to protect teeth later
15:53on because you...
15:54I once did have a dental splint because apparently I was grinding quite a bit at one point, but
15:59I just...
16:00Life got busy and I just...
16:01Yeah, yeah.
16:02Because they've been pretty hammered.
16:03They can see how flat they are.
16:04Yeah.
16:05So they...
16:06Once upon a time had little points on them and you sort of ground them pretty flat.
16:09Oh, did they really?
16:10Yeah.
16:11Yeah, they flat as anything.
16:12They're not piece of paper.
16:13They didn't grow that way.
16:14Oh, they didn't.
16:15Okay.
16:16And I've still got my wisdom teeth.
16:19You do, yep.
16:20Yeah.
16:21So, see, I really do want to preserve them as best I can.
16:25Yeah.
16:26Given all the early damage I did.
16:27I did have.
16:28I think also first and probably a guard at the end of it.
16:29Yeah.
16:30You can climb a little further.
16:31But when these teeth start contacting it, it will take the pressure off that.
16:32Yes.
16:33Do you recommend any form of teeth whitening now?
16:34Or you reckon get the bite fixed first?
16:35I'll get a crack on the bite, I think.
16:36Get a crack on the bite, yeah.
16:37That can be done later.
16:38Yeah, yeah, sure.
16:39Yeah, get the bite fixed first.
16:40I think it's time.
16:41Yeah.
16:42How long roughly does it take to...
16:43That's the question again.
16:44Are you trying to get me more?
16:45I'm trying to get all the information I can so I just feel armed with knowledge.
16:57You should do a lot of planning to get that answer, and if I say the wrong thing, you'll
17:11do a little nod.
17:12No, I'm just genuinely grateful.
17:14Years, not nuts.
17:15Oh, really?
17:16Oh, wow.
17:17Does that mean I never have to get another filling again for a few years while I'm still
17:22working at the bite?
17:23That would be brilliant.
17:25No comment.
17:26And moving forward, okay, just bite fixed, and what do you reckon for teeth like mine,
17:34just keep doing what I'm doing?
17:35Can I tell you what I'm doing?
17:36Sure.
17:37Like for dental care?
17:38I floss.
17:39Yep.
17:40Once a day though.
17:42I brush twice.
17:43I use Clossies, fluoride rinse first.
17:46Yep.
17:47Then I brush with a really good Crest toothpaste.
17:50Then I use Listerine rinse and then a fluoride rinse on top of that.
