00:00Good morning. So I was listening to the Zach Lowe show. He was formerly of ESPN. He's now with the
00:08Ringer. And he was talking about how frustrating it is for fans of the Celtics that Jalen Brown
00:15has been dealt away. And the reasoning is the CBA and the two Supermax contracts. And we've
00:20been talking about this a lot, but he suggested that maybe the NBA needs to course correct
00:27this change by saying, if it's a player that you drafted, developed, and then awarded
00:34the Supermax to, maybe you should get a tax break. Maybe you need to course correct a little
00:40bit because you shouldn't be punishing teams for drafting and developing talent. And for
00:47fans, nobody wants to see somebody that they spent the last 10 years with in the jersey
00:52of another team, especially a rival in your own division. And I thought that was a great
00:56point. And I thought this shouldn't only be something that's considered in basketball
01:01because right now we're wondering, Hey, are the Patriots going to deal away Christian
01:07Gonzalez or are they going to pay him the market setting money at his position? And I know
01:12that if, correct me if I'm wrong, Wiggy, if you trade away a drafted player, instead of
01:17giving him a big extension, a big new deal, you might get some like mid range compensatory
01:23draft picks back, uh, in order to alleviate some of that. But I would like there to be
01:28a tax exemption. If you award a big contract to a rookie who's up for it too. So like if
01:34you're giving, I don't know, a quarter million guarantee or quarter billion rather guaranteed
01:39to Drake may, and then money on top of that, you know, that's not guaranteed. It's going to
01:43be a ton that it looks like on the surface. And then maybe Robert Kraft ownership gets a
01:50little tax alleviation against the salary cap. And I think this is important because if we're going
01:55to hold owners and ownership responsible for being fair with the players that they say, Oh,
02:00it's all about the draft picks. It's all about devalue them. It's all about homegrown talent.
02:04Then you can't give us the cap stuff, right? It's about the cash in the player's pocket
02:09and keeping these players in town. If they want to be in town and not having as much of, Oh,
02:15everything's going up against the hard cap. Everything's going up against the hard cap.
02:18I think it's a way to keep people's jerseys in their closets that they've had for 10 years.
02:25Yeah. I like it. I'm, I'm, I'm interested in it. I have heard more and more of those who
02:33are completely deep into the CBA stuff and the apron stuff who understand it because it's like,
02:42I was talking earlier about trying to read an insurance policy during the commercial break
02:46for super short. Nobody, nobody can really understand it, uh, suggest that, uh, when they
02:52look back now four days, five days after the Jalen Brown trade, that Brad is playing chess
03:01while everybody else is playing checkers, because you are going to have all of these teams, whether
03:07it is Denver or whether it is OKC or what you name it, who are going to have to look
03:14at doing
03:14a very similar thing when it comes to their superstars, uh, in the near future. And that
03:20this team is going to be primed, uh, because they get rid of the, uh, repeater. What's the,
03:27uh, repeater tax. Yeah. The repeater tax. And so they're going to be primed to sign one of those
03:32guys. Right. So I, and I think if, if Curtis is Curtis was here, I think maybe he would say,
03:37and I kind of would, I don't know. I probably, you say it if you agree, I would agree. Whereas
03:42you don't care about that. You want to spend, spend $8 billion. No, no, no, no, no, the penalties
03:48and the new CBA, uh, or the, the, all of that kind of world there, the, uh, second apron and
03:55all.
03:55Wasn't that more of an owner thing? It is, but this is, Wiki isn't so slanted towards that rather
04:01than the players who earn the super. So my thing is this, why would you agree to put this in
04:08place
04:09and then complain? Well, we can't, our hands are tied, right? If you're complaining about this as
04:17an ownership group or, or basketball operations group, if you're complaining about this, should
04:23you look to your owners and go, why did we even put these stupid penalties in place?
04:27It's such a great point, Wiki. And like, if only I don't, I've never seen this. If there was like
04:31a transparency where you could say, Hey, who voted for this CBA and who didn't, then we'd get a more
04:37fair picture of that. But at the same time, I also think it's different if you're, if you're doing the
04:43kind of old school NBA way of saying, all right, we're bringing in this free agent and we're trading
04:48for this guy and they're both super max contracts and we're just going for it for two or three
04:52years and seeing how many championships we can get versus we spent 10 years with this guy.
04:59And now we're forced to, to, if you buy what the Celtics are saying to be in a position where
05:05we
05:05have to say this contract just doesn't make sense for us in the future.
05:08And that's why I said that, like, you know, that's why I probably, you know, kind of, I know Curtis
05:11and
05:12I go back and forth about what John Henry's trying to do. And I understand the whole trying to get
05:17a
05:17salary cap and why he's trying to do that. I might not necessarily agree with that, but I
05:23understand what the owners in baseball and it's similar in basketball, right? If you're doing that,
05:28you created these penalties and this second apron because you didn't want to see these super teams
05:34put together because some, uh, some owners could afford to do that. And not, but you're now a basketball
05:41front office complaining about the things that your owner did where, Oh, we can't afford to have
05:47two guys. Well, you should have never put these and they, and they say penalties are the reason why
05:52they don't do it. So I'm like kind of confused with the whole thing. Has your anger about the trade
05:57and what they got back subsided at all? When you learned that Jalen Brown was out there tanking his
06:05trade value? No, because I, I, I look at, I look, of course not. No, because he ever say anything
06:12bad about any athlete in the, in the history of sports. I do. I say things bad about athletes all
06:17the time, but doesn't that explain to you what happened? No, that might explain to me what happened
06:22in like Portland and other places. The thing that I am still, you know, trying to become my new normal
06:30is that you missed out on Giannis. Yeah, we get that. And so anything else after that means
06:37nothing to me. I wouldn't have traded Jalen Brown or Portland for whoever they would have sent you
06:42back. Yeah. So, all right. Well, Greg, let's hear from Jason Tatum wants to clear the air about him
06:46and Jalen Brown and the quote unquote friction that existed or didn't exist. Was this on the today

07:59with, uh, Jenna Bush Hager and Shinell, Shinell, Shinell. Yes. And so here was Jason Tatum.
08:06I think for, for one, um, I have nothing obviously, but love and respect. And you said that. Yeah. Um,
08:13it's tough when, you know, you're a professional athlete and everything we do is, is publicized and nitpicked.
08:19Um, and it's been like that, you know, we played together for nine years. There was a part, there
08:24was a period of our career where, you know, we hadn't won a championship yet, but in retrospect,
08:30we were only 23 and 21 years old. Yeah. You were kids. So the expectations were so high. And so
08:37they
08:37just had to figure out a reason why we hadn't won yet. Um, and you know, they tried to pin
08:42us against
08:42each other and say that one guy shouldn't be here or whatnot. But the truth is we had nine amazing
08:47years together. Um, we went to the finals twice. We won a championship. Um, so I'll forever be
08:53grateful for, you know, those memories and, um, the time that we spent together.
08:57Hmm. What would you guess Windhorst meant yesterday when he said that Brad Stevens
09:07couldn't say why Jalen Brown was gone? Because the explanation would be offensive and coarse.
09:16I think it's what I said earlier that it would sound terrible if you said Jalen Brown is not
09:22worth the same contract as Giannis. That sounds disrespectful to Jalen Brown, even if that's
09:29the real reason. Right. Which could be, which I believe is the real reason. Right. But he's
09:34not going to say that because he just saw Jalen Brown on his own stream saying the way Brad
09:40handled this and he doesn't want to look like he's disrespectful to guys. But it's too late
09:45because as a former professional athlete here, sick brag bro, you know, when the coach tries
09:53to upgrade, right? If you, and I'll, I'll put it in terms that maybe other people can relate
09:59that are in the dating world. Like if you're dating somebody, but you're always trying to
10:04date the person that you know looks better, maybe has a better career, has more money because
10:09they did it twice with Jalen Brown. First, they did it with Kevin Durant and then they
10:14did it with obviously Giannis. And so if you're Jalen Brown, you're going, okay, you like me,
10:21but you would prefer to have a better option if that option comes available. And so that
10:28is disrespectful because you're always out there looking around for that better option.
10:34Why aren't you doing that for Jason Tate?
