Greek Freak to Boston?! Real possibility? Should the Celtics make the call? Should Brad Stevens inquire even if it means Jaylen Brown?
Mego: "Plan A is keeping 'The Jays' together. Keep Jaylen Brown here. I don't think you win that trade, even with Giannis 1-1"
Thoughts?
Transcript
00:00But anyway, did I hear that Mago is now in favor of trading Jalen Brown?
00:06I don't believe that's what she said, although a little bit of an about face from you.
00:11No about face.
00:12I have said and I continue to say, plan A has to be keeping the Jays together.
00:18Keep Jalen Brown here because I don't think you win that trade, even with Giannis as the one for one
00:25player swap.
00:25But this sentiment that like Brad Stevens should not even be exploring what different opportunities may be when you had
00:35a first round exit in the playoffs.
00:37And it's the second postseason in a row when it appears that you've underachieved.
00:42Like, what are you going to do that?
00:44You don't want Brad Stevens to pick up the phone.
00:45That's his job.
00:46Well, he says that Jalen Brown has a legitimate gripe.
00:49He does.
00:50But you know what?
00:51Sometimes like what you do in the best interest of the team hurts feelings.
00:55Even if it's just exploratory like that.
00:59Hey, it killed me.
01:01And maybe I'm the only one at this whole station when he when Brad Stevens traded Marcus Smart.
01:06I loved Marcus Smart.
01:08That was a dark day for the green team.
01:09It was dark day for me, but it was the right move.
01:12They got a championship.
01:13It changed something in that team even beyond bringing back Kristaps Porzingis.
01:18I want to go to something you were right about.
01:22And how they viewed Marcus Smart as a side-by-side player with Jalen Brown then.
01:28You talked about the media guides and how Marcus Smart was like, it wasn't Jalen and Jason.
01:34It was Jalen, Jason, and Marcus Smart.
01:36And I feel like that was a big moment.
01:39But I feel like that's another example I feel where Jalen's been sort of not disrespected, but not properly appreciated.
01:45You think like undervalued.
01:46Yes.
01:47Yeah.
01:47Yeah.
01:47And he's felt that.
01:49He would.
01:50And I get that.
01:51I get his feelings on things, right?
01:53Yeah.
01:53I mean, Greg kind of went through the timeline of it.
01:57You get drafted number three overall and like, all right, it's going to be my team.
02:02Now they're putting the trust into me.
02:05The very next year, the very next draft, they draft a player very similar to you.
02:12Plays the same position.
02:13Plays the same position at number three, almost like, wait a second.
02:17So you're not adding to help me out.
02:20You're just basically trying to replace me with another guy in Jason Tatum.
02:25So I get why he's frustrated.
02:28And then all the trade rumors that have been around his name over the years.
02:33And some of the things where he talked about how he had to kind of sacrifice and make certain adjustments.
02:38And to Curtis's point, it was Jason, Jalen, and Marcus Smart, the big three.
02:44And at times, maybe, you know, Marcus Smart was the face of the franchise or the hustle and the leadership.
02:51More of a fan favorite.
02:52Fan favorite.
02:53It's a good one.
02:54I look at it like this.
02:56I think, and I said, the horse is out of the barn on this one.
03:01If Jalen comes back and Jason is obviously going to be, we all expect 100% healthy, ready to go
03:08at the beginning of next season.
03:11What does that dynamic look like?
03:14You know, what does that dynamic look like in a guy who had an MVP caliber season in Jalen Brown?
03:24He is now in all, he's now.
03:26Well, most of the league didn't feel like he had an MVP caliber.
03:29He did.
03:30Well, his numbers wouldn't lie.
03:32His numbers.
03:32He was in conversation.
03:33He was in conversation.
03:34He was very much in conversation.
03:36I went in tonight.
03:37Top five, right?
03:38So he's in the conversation.
03:39He's a legitimate second team, all NBA, which I'm the best two-way player in the world, which you could
03:45have made an argument.
03:46He could have been first team, all NBA.
03:48So he is now in the category of, oh, now statistically or awards wise, I'm at the same level as
03:58Jason Tatum.
03:59Jason Tatum has never been an NBA finals MVP, Eastern Conference MVP.
04:08I'm all NBA like him, right?
04:12So what does that dynamic look like?
04:15Well, speaking of the dynamic, does one of them have to take the back seat?
04:20Passenger seat, for sure.
04:21Yeah, you have to.
04:23Okay.
04:24Is Jason Tatum going to do that when he's 100% healthy?
04:28Well, he might sit in the back with Deuce.
04:30Yeah, I don't think so, but neither will Jalen Brown, right?
04:33And I know people say they play together, they want a championship.
04:36They have.
04:37But does it look like they're getting better together or are they getting further from a championship?
04:45I think that's a fair question.
04:47I would say that you can point to the exits that the Celtics have had recently, and a lot of
04:53them have to do with bad luck, bad injury luck that Tatum has had in those closeout games.
04:58And to me, that demonstrates like Tatum is so important to keeping them in the next level of the playoffs.
05:04But I continue to say, if you're telling me Jalen for Giannis, I would prefer to still have the duo
05:11here that I know works.
05:13Can I ask this question to the room?
05:14And I want everybody to answer honestly.
05:16Oh, no.
05:17Okay.
05:18Can the audience participate?
05:19Audience can participate.
05:21Tatum doesn't play game seven.
05:23The team is built the way we see it.
05:26You swap out one player, healthy.
05:32Giannis for Jalen.
05:33Do they win game seven against the Philadelphia 76ers with Giannis?
05:40No.
05:41No.
05:41Wait, Giannis for Jalen and Tatum is out?
05:43And yeah, Tatum's out the same way you see it.
05:46Oh, no, I don't think they win.
05:47See, I think they do win.
05:48Milwaukee hasn't won a series since 2022.
05:50No, I'm not saying Milwaukee.
05:51I'm saying you.
05:52Yeah, but Giannis is Milwaukee.
05:54You put Giannis on this team.
05:55What if Tatum was 100% healthy and went in game seven and Jalen Brown did not?
06:00I think they win.
06:01Wow.
06:02Wow.
06:03Yeah, I think that way he does.
06:05Okay, so are you being disrespectful to Jalen right now?
06:07I, a little bit, I am.
06:09Yeah, I love that.
06:10Well, I think Jason Tatum feels that way, too.
06:12You're so transparent.
06:12Yeah.
06:12Like, if you listen to those who speak for him, I think he feels that same way also.
06:17Yeah, because I don't get people.
06:18People are like, oh, I'm not trading Jalen Brown for Giannis.
06:22Who's the better player?
06:24Giannis or Jalen?
06:25Mago said that.
06:26She wouldn't, she would not do that.
06:27That is not my preference.
06:28Okay.
06:29Like, I'm not saying, I'm not like Jones and Keith where I listen to them and it sounds
06:33like it's a disaster to them to trade for Giannis.
06:36But when you look at the situation, ask yourself this.
06:38You have player A who's coming off the best season of his entire career.
06:43Yep.
06:43He's making, I don't know what it is right now, 61?
06:4650 or 60, I can find out for you.
06:48And he's slated to make in the low 60s over the next two years and he's 20, 29.
06:56Yep.
06:57Player B is coming off 36 games.
07:00Yep.
07:00His worst statistical season.
07:03Mm-hmm.
07:03And he's two years older and he's looking for a four-year extension that's going to be
07:08almost 70 million per year.
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:11Which player are you taking?
07:12And by the way, Jason Tatum is best bros with player B.
07:18With Giannis?
07:19Yes.
07:20What do you mean?
07:21They like each other.
07:23Yeah, they're cool.
07:24I think Tatum kind of likes everybody.
07:26Except for Jalen.
07:27Okay.
07:28So I'd ask you this, right?
07:29That player that you talked about in two years and Jalen Brown is going to be making close
07:34to $70 million a year.
07:36At the end.
07:38Yeah, when he gets his extension.
07:41I'm not saying that Giannis is not a better player than Jalen.
07:45And I'm just saying, if you're from the front office and you're looking at the value of
07:49the player, there is a lot that goes in Jalen.
07:51Giannis is 31 years old.
07:53Yeah.
07:53And I'm not saying he's like LeBron age.
07:56Let's say four years.
07:57Mm-hmm.
07:58Right?
07:58Because that's what you talked about.
07:59Four years, 275.
08:00Yeah, that new contract.
08:01So we're talking four years.
08:02So Giannis at 35.
08:04Is Giannis at 35 still going to be one of the most dominant players in the NBA?
08:08I say yes.
08:09I don't know.
08:10Look at Steph Curry, who's 37.
08:12Steph Curry couldn't be more different than Giannis.
08:15Two years ago.
08:16Look at KD.
08:17Two years ago.
08:18You're comparing two players who are ultra different body types and positions.
08:21No, no.
08:21But I'm talking about their ages.
08:23KD is 37.
08:24Two years ago, and KD was All-NBA this year.
08:28He was third-team All-NBA.
08:29Yeah, KD's built more like a Tatum.
08:30No, but...
08:31Look at Joel Embiid.
08:32The point that I'm making...
08:33But Giannis has never dealt...
08:35Prior to this year, Giannis was playing in 68, 69, 70 games.
08:40He wasn't...
08:41I agree.
08:41But when you look at Giannis' body types, that's what I'm saying.
08:44Is it going to break down?
08:45He had one season this season where he had this calf strain.
08:49This is John.
08:50John, what's up?
08:53Can we just state the obvious that I'm yet to hear anybody say?
08:57The Celtics are not a good team.
08:59They got some good players.
09:01But this team is in shambles.
09:04Nobody is pulling the rope in the same direction.
09:06And that's the problem.
09:08If you put this team in the West, they're probably a play-in team.
09:12So the conversation that if this one played and that one didn't,
09:16could they win Game 7 against Philadelphia?
09:18Who cares?
09:19Because they're going to get their lips slapped off in the next year.
09:22Well, and I think, John, I think Brad Stevens kind of alluded to that
09:28when he did his press conference where he made a point of saying that against
09:33good teams, they were 3-11 this season.
09:38And, Greg, just to close it out, though, I mean, if you look at it for what it is,
09:45this team, yeah, fine, they won the championship.
09:47You can't say they didn't.
09:49But they got lucky.
09:50Every player that they would have gone against was injured the whole run.
09:56I mean, I'm sorry.
09:58This team is as fraught as fraud gets.
10:00And as far as Jalen Brown's MVP nonsense is, the whole league took the year off
10:06to tank for a player in college or coming out of high school.
10:09And we're going to talk about his great season.
10:12Again, you put this team out West, they'd be lucky to make the playoffs.
10:16So I guess the question becomes, if the pull, like because the caller said
10:22something about the tug and pull of the team, is there's issues there,
10:28what would make this team different in the way that they would play basketball?
10:34And when I look at Jason and Jalen, very similar players.
10:39I think Jason has more of a bag.
10:41But when I look at Jason Tatum and Giannis, Giannis is a completely different player
10:46than Jason Tatum.
10:48He is a guy that is more about playing in the paint, getting to the front of the rim.
10:52So what you would then have is two guys that are complete opposite.
10:57So when Tatum's not able to score the way he needs to score from the perimeter,
11:01you have a player that can cause damage at the rim,
11:05where now you have two guys that really are very similar in the style that they play.
11:13Even though Giannis is not a true big man,
11:16he is more of a guy that's going to play at the rim
11:18than he is going to be hawking up threes or playing as a perimeter player.
11:23So now you're able to change the dynamic and the look of your team.
11:27And so Joe Mazzula might go,
11:30we don't have to live and die on the three-pointers when they're not falling.
11:33Let's get the ball into Giannis.
11:35Do you think Joe Mazzula wants that?
11:37Because I think, I keep going back to Brad Stevens saying,
11:40the play style is going to be dictated by,
11:43or he said, play style doesn't come before roster.
11:46So the roster that I put together,
11:48if that roster includes Giannis, who does not really shoot threes,
11:52then that's going to have to change the play style
11:54that they've been playing the last couple of years,
11:56which is probably music to some people's ears
11:57who just watched that Sixers series.
11:59But don't you wonder whether Joe Mazzula's voice
12:02when it comes to decisions like that
12:04got a little quieter
12:07with the way they performed this season?
12:09Yes.
12:11Greg, you're 100% right.
12:13I mean, Brad Stevens goes,
12:14Joe, you've done a great job,
12:17but here's what we're going to start doing.
12:19And I'm going to help you
12:20because you want to play pick and roll
12:22and you want to play this two-on-one game.
12:24We're going to play a two-on-one game
12:25with Jason and Giannis.
12:26And so now if Giannis gets to the rim
12:29and everything collapses,
12:30you could still kick out
12:32and you'll still get those open three looks.
12:34But if those threes are not falling,
12:36we got a guy that can finish at the rim consistently.
12:38And then I'm going to throw you LeBron James
12:41for one more go at it.
12:45One more shot at glory for the kick.
12:47Greg, all right.
12:49That is a clarification on Meggo.
12:53She doesn't want to split up the Jays,
12:55but she does want to defend Brad Stevens.
12:58And the midday show has to stop playing those Dr. Drops.
13:01Yes.
13:02Meggo's kind of waffling, though.
13:04Do you want Jalen or do you not want him?
13:06I do want Jalen.
13:08I feel like I've been pretty clear about that.
13:10Okay, but you want Brad to actively pursue trading.
13:13I'm not going to sit here and say that it's not like,
13:16that it's not Brad's job.
13:18What's your IG handle?
13:20Meggo waffle.
13:22It's right there for you.
13:24And then it says green teamer in parentheses.
