"Takes some humility" Jaylen Brown discusses Celtics, since the JT return- What is the state of JB/JT and the Boston Celtics? Celtics insider Meghan Ottolini joins!
Transcript
00:00we are fortunate today to have our wei celtics insider sitting in courtney's seat and that is
00:06mego and she is there every day practice game uh doesn't matter and so um you like that answer
00:15from jaylen brown so when he says that it takes humility i you can get you guys can tell me
00:22i'm
00:22totally hearing this wrong i feel like he's speaking on behalf of both of them that it takes
00:28humility to be part of a duo of playmakers rather than the one guy the i don't know like 2015
00:37russell
00:38westbrook where everything's gonna run through him and he's gonna make a case for himself for mvp every
00:44single game because that's the goal and when he talked about the bigger picture i think it's clear
00:49for both of these guys that they understand that the bigger picture is more championships that people
00:54remember you by the championships that you hang not the mvp awards that you win because there's a
01:01lot of guys who win mvp awards and then don't do anything else and they go down as a name
01:07that's
01:07just in history for hoop heads right well i would say i would agree with you but when he does
01:14put
01:14himself in there and say well i had to sacrifice he doesn't say like jason had a sacrifice he says
01:22i had a sacrifice you know and i'm willing to put the team ahead i don't really agree where it's
01:28like oh he's saying this for the both of them i think he's saying it to like say like here's
01:32the
01:32things that i've done now he might be saying like all right jason you need to take what i'm saying
01:38and
01:39now you need to apply this to how you're coming back i would ask you this question i think it
01:44sounds
01:44like it's your turn to sacrifice yeah exactly exactly and i would ask you mango jaylon's got
01:50three more years so do you think after the second year is when he'll re-up for a new supermax
01:56or will
01:57it be after his third year i really don't know okay so i guess all right so regardless of that
02:02do you
02:02think he does another supermax here and then plays that out wiggy thinks if they win it this year
02:09that jaylon brown is gonna want his own team like he'll have accomplished enough here that he wants
02:16to move on is what you're saying well that or do you think that they can play together he jaylon
02:23brown
02:23knew it but this season he has been able to show it right that he can be the guy right
02:31um and may not
02:32want to share the uh the accolades with anybody else yeah i just think it's rare in the nba now
02:40to go somewhere and be the only guy or be the one and then have a two and a three
02:46with you and have
02:47that never shift throughout a season or a couple seasons i don't know because i don't really like
02:53i don't have a good sense i don't know about you guys about like who jb's guys are around the
02:58league
02:59and i wonder if when those guys talk to each other you take somebody like kevin durant who was
03:05mostly the guy in okc and then he goes to the warriors because he wants to win and he sees
03:11that
03:11as the only way that he gets rings yeah but he left he left okc because he bumped heads with
03:17russell
03:17westwell also because he's done that he's he's done that almost everywhere he's right because like he's
03:23somebody the guy he's somebody who always needs to be the guy right and is not willing to share
03:28anywhere right but what team in the nba has two guys where they alternate who the number one is
03:33none exactly none the whole point of it but it's happened before i mean if you look at shack and
03:37kobe right the lakers right the second kobe got as good he shack left seven years that lasted and
03:43curtis is right in the beginning the first three champion the those first three championships the
03:48first two were basically shack then kobe started to become kobe seven years and they're like well
03:53this is not going to work because we can't have two you know pit bulls fighting over one piece of
03:59meat right the the question i would i guess maybe the easier way to ask the question is do you
04:04see
04:04these guys both finishing their career as celtics because they're relatively young that's the dream
04:10right but can you i to think of an example where that happened where two guys retired after being
04:16drafted back-to-back years like that that's hard to think of an example where that's happened well
04:22i'm asking you they he has three years left do you think that after his three years i think he
04:27will
04:27try to re-up here and he will have the super max it's the nba anything is possible with these
04:34guys
04:34moving around team-wise though is the right thing to trade one of them when their value is the highest
04:42and that would be after this season with jalen brown no no no not after this season i would not
04:48i would not do that i think that that would be so preemptive and the other thing from jalen's
04:53perspective that i do wonder about is he has without a doubt been the one who has carried this team
05:00and
05:00been the leader of this team but the other factors around what have made this team successful have a lot
05:06to do with the celtics organization itself and being able to go into the draft find role players or
05:12find role players from elsewhere that you can backfill around your core of jalen and derrick and
05:19then somebody who you develop over time like peyton pritchard like these are you don't get that
05:24everywhere a lot of times once you get past four or five guys it's like maybe that guy has those
05:31guys
05:31on the bench have a night once every three months it's just not normal for a lot of teams to
05:36have
05:37baylor shireman in his second season be somebody who's very significant and ugo gonzalez have the
05:43plus minus that he has but it's jalen though see and i think to her to your point that even
05:49makes it
05:49uh uh puts it in jalen's corner she's not saying it's jalen she's saying it's the organization she's
05:55saying it's brad stevens finding those guys it's joe mazula uh who doesn't get enough credit or hasn't
06:01gotten enough credit like but but but the point but creating that but do you think jalen brown is
06:06like i can't go to another team because they won't be able to get role players right no but i'm
06:10saying
06:10i think the reality is that sometimes guys leave an organization that's in a position like this
06:16and they go elsewhere and they go oh my god it's not it's not like i thought it was but
06:21it's jalen going
06:21look what i was able to do with shireman ah boy silky sammy like these guys were just holding down
06:33the end of the bench but because of the way i play i'm able to elevate their their game so
06:39i can do this
06:40no matter where it is they're the number two team in the eastern conference where you brought up these
06:47guys with just basically guys that you were holding down the end of the bench but it's because
06:53of the way jalen brown has been able to elevate his game which is elevate those around them you don't
06:59think he could go i could do this anyway but couldn't it go the other way wiki we're from the
07:03organization standpoint they look at jalen brown and they say when we gave him that supermax a couple
07:09years ago we had no idea like that he was going to have a season like this years after earning
07:15that
07:16so why would we trade away a player like that who just continues to level up i'm not saying that
07:21they're going to trade away i would not trade him after this season but he could go to any number
07:25of
07:25teams and have as good or a better supporting cast that he had this year and right tatum got back
07:29right like it's not like he has he has to find a gm that's going to do all those things
07:33he thinks
07:33he's the reason they are where they are which is why you posted that before the all he is he
07:37is a
07:37huge like the main reason why they are where they are and his resume is platinum status like i'm the
07:43best two-way player in the world he gives his resume to any gm in the league and goes look
07:49what
07:49i was able to do with these guys around me modesty is irrelevant when tatum wasn't there and any gm
07:54would go wow jalen we know what you can do and we're gonna bring in a number two who is
08:02better than
08:02anything that you had other than jason tatum but it's gonna know that he's the number two but when we
08:08say like i know it sounds silly to say like okay what are the role players gonna be like but
08:14look
08:14at like the nets a couple years ago okay you got like durant and kairi and harden and on paper
08:20you
08:21go wow those are like three practically three ones you know these are guys who are mvp level players
08:27it never worked well because you can't just play the fantasy gm and throw basketball players together
08:33and say well these are this is the best talent and it's the most money and so boom nba championship
08:39people think it works that way but i think but why does it never work though um i almost called
08:44you courtney the celtics are the example of building out from a franchise no the reason why that didn't
08:50work is because you have three guys with massive egos who are not willing to be like okay i'm willing
08:57to know my role the reason why the celtics worked with their big three everybody knew what their role was
09:03right and so when you look talk about the brooklyn one it's not the role players because of the
09:07reason why it didn't work it's because you had three alphas that didn't know how to subjugate their
09:12egos where but these two have been able to figure that out so far not now that's a whole world's
09:18changed everything's flipped it's like it's bad all of a sudden it was better than you what's the
09:22evidence of that though curtis because the way that they're playing on the court right now performance
09:27they're playing well together just because jalen like jason tatum is easing back into
09:32who he was like why does that mean that everything has changed because as i think what you said it
09:39earlier it was all theoretical even for jalen it was theoretical right that he could be a legit number
09:43one and we've seen both in how he feels on the court and what he said about himself on social
09:48media
09:48that he believes he is the number one guy and he would be the number one guy on every other
09:53team in
09:53the nba minus one or two so it's that is to me why jason tatum on the pivot whatever it
09:59was
10:00where he talked about wondering if he would be able to fit in with the chemistry of the team
10:04because the chemistry of the team has shifted in his absence and once jalen brown already incredibly
10:09confident maybe the most confident athlete we've ever seen and rightfully so i just don't see long
10:14term that that works i think this year it'll work great i think both it'd be jason and jalen want
10:19to
10:19win a championship right it's they're going to go they're going to have a great run at it this year
10:23and it's going to be awesome right i think for the future of the organization i think it is
10:27uh not likely it works out in the long run from your perspective curtis is it similar to bill and
10:33tom yeah absolutely or it's even similar to like theo epstein and larry lucchino you know guy like
10:39theo was his intern and then boom he became a point where he thought he was more powerful and then
10:43they
10:44end up getting divorced like i just this is not saying that jalen's bad or jason's bad it's not a
10:48personal judgment at all it's just that they are incredibly competitive and i believe that jalen brown
10:56does not want to be the bat the robin to batman going forward this has been my favorite season
11:02so far and he said this was his favorite season and it's no it's no different than the world that
11:07we're in right this show is the greg hill show yes i didn't want to name it that right no
11:13no but it
11:14it is what it is right if there was somebody on this show that felt like the reason why this
11:21show
11:21is successful is because of them they'd be like are you telling us something shine right and we saw
11:27what happened to jackson when he thought that shine refers to it as his show when he's on with you
11:31during the weekend that is true he doesn't say greg show he says he says his show so he might
11:36be like
11:37he wants it to be the greg and shine show rise and shine wiggy curtis a good name for a
11:46morning uh you
11:46could call it like rise and shine the morning zoo right or you could call it rise and shine brought
11:52to you by northeast man's clinic now based on what we know some of your private proclivities are i don't
11:58think you should call it a morning zoo uh probably not so here's where you could be a different animal
12:05every single day on the show shine when you did that yes what where i think it's different than
12:10something like bill and tom which was a very real like tension point that boiled over is that i don't
12:18think that there's anything yet that seems like is that where it's not mutually beneficial like for
12:25everybody so as i said like it was mutually beneficial for bill and tom well but tom was
12:31taking a ton of less money to get the if you are on tom's side which i think is the
12:38truth
12:39while bill was the highest paid coach in the league so that tom could play with craft's rules and
12:46have the roster flushed out with the talent that he felt like to keep winning you know he resented that
12:52no i do that's why i'm saying i think it's different neither jason nor jalen have missed
12:56out on a super max you can say neither one has won mvp but neither one has sat there and
13:02said like
13:02my goal this year is to win mvp if anything jason tatum is like following in the kobe footsteps and
13:08seems to be happy to wait 10 years plus before he wins that award i was gonna ask you're around
13:14there all the time like do you think jason tatum is bothered that this is now called jalen brown's
13:22team no and i mean when we say it's called jalen brown's team like first of all when you talk
13:28about
13:28the conversation with the celtics right now i think it's a dual conversation of how incredible is it
13:33that jalen brown is getting mvp chance when he's in the south boston parade and then seeing the suns the
13:40next night and dropping 40 plus like what a wild 24 hours and he told us about that how incredible
13:46is it that jason tatum is coming back and dropping 20 plus just 10 months after he tore in achilles
13:52i
13:53think that that's kind of the points of focus i don't think it's right now is it your team is
13:57it my
13:57team but i can't sit here and pretend to read their minds about how it's gonna feel 12 months from
14:03now
14:04when right now they should be favorites coming out of the east and nothing could be better i think like
14:09you're you know some people tend to whistle past the graveyard we know i don't even see the graveyard
14:15i see like a wedding venue in front of us we know whose team this is we just heard audio
14:21from jalen
14:22going and i agree with him this is my team like we just heard the guy well no somebody in
14:28twitch says
14:29what are you talking about it's never been called jalen brown's team he's just said this is my team you
14:35know and i could be paraphrasing a little bit but he he kind of said like you know this is
14:39my
14:39team i'm proud of what my team has been able to do so he's looked at the jason tatum this
14:45year
14:46i'm not like concerned at all because he's easing his way back in he's coming back so late in the
14:52season he's easing his way back in he knows he's gonna you know not take a back seat he's gonna
14:56be
14:56more in the passenger seat the question becomes next year and the year after that 774 text i'm curious
15:04greg what did you want to call the show if it wasn't the greg hill show i i was thinking
15:08about
15:09friends oh what's that what do you think about that never been done before i think we should have
15:16just put it on something like you know country morning drive whatever they thought we were going
15:20to be with the uh the rumors and reporting out there seven years ago weren't we going country or
15:24something when i came over here we're supposed to everybody who said that is gone we're supposed to
15:28because michael my league was yesterday is could they these two kind of like look and go hey let's
15:37set aside our egos and how we feel and let's do this thing where we can be teammates for the
15:44next
15:44eight years and win multiple championships i was asking that question i just think it's interesting
15:49that people now that tatum is back and jalen has had the year that he has that the conversation
15:55immediately turns back to are these egos going to coexist when from my perspective it seems that
16:02jalen has never been more invested or closer to boston than he has right now he's in the south
16:09boston parade he does all his work with the bridge program over at mit he has his foundation like
16:15this is somebody who i think just seems same with jason tatum but you know that's been more like
16:22publicly i think the case for a while like jalen seems more invested when you heard al horford talk
16:28about why he left and the things were weird what do you think he was referencing if you have a
16:32i have
16:32no idea i just assumed that that was money talk because he knew he brad steven said told said at
16:39the
16:39end of the season that they were not going to be able to offer him the kind of money and
16:44when somebody
16:45talks like that and says it's bigger than basketball i don't know how you hear it wiggy being in those
16:50shoes but i think he's talking about generational wealth he's talking about setting up his family
16:54al horford's made a ton of money with the celtics but it's like the age that he's at he's thinking
17:00this is going to be my final bag so i need to go get get a giant bag so i
17:04don't really know more so
17:05than he would get here yeah and i don't know if it is about money but you're in the basketball
17:08world
17:09what's the biggest thing and i mean every athlete has it but in basketball the thing that dominates more
17:13than anything else is egos like that's it because in the basketball world there's always one guy
17:20that puts himself atop that team well i think that's why you're when you say i'm seeing a
17:28different jaylen brown i think that's why like he finally you know he was upset that that that fans
17:34booed when the celtics picked him he was upset that his name was in mentioned all the time in uh
17:41in
17:41trade discussions he was he so i think for the first time he feels appreciated and wanted i guess
17:49i guess i guess is that what you call that i guess i guess i call that take that sucker
17:55well
17:56you know you didn't think i could do it well that might be what it is too that's what i
18:00get out of
18:01it out of it is like you didn't think i could do it and then he said i knew i
18:06could do it i just
18:07needed my opportunity so it's a as as an athlete who's been down that road before it's more about
18:13showing everybody who doubted you that you can't and throwing it in their face but this doubt is
18:18like jaylen has got he's been an all-star before before this season all-star super max eastern
18:24conference means nothing that's why guys care about all nba which he was two second egos so they
18:34can get the super max money it means it means nothing to their egos these guys want the respect
18:40they want to be but isn't that part of it no i'm a super max player i have what they
18:45want what they
18:46want is when when people talk basketball they want to say they want to hear jaylen brown is the best
18:52two-way player in the top five or top five that's what they want to hear they know they're good
18:57enough
18:57to get super max why do you think he posted those side-by-side stats before the all-star break
19:02i am gonna sound like a huge bobo and i accept it all right you could say it all i
19:09think that was
19:10more about us in the media i think he was he could have done that differently i don't think that
19:14was
19:15about hey last year because at the same time literally was last year though pointing no i'm saying
19:20he was pointing to last year the team that they had just in terms of also drew holiday al horford
19:27christoph's porzingis run it back we're gonna win a championship and then everybody's sitting here in
19:32the off season saying oh my god they tore it down to studs like what are they going to be
19:37in the
19:37play-in tournament that's again call me a giant bobo that's that's i would never sincerely how i
19:44i would say get you a red nose and some giant shoes because you sound like bobo the clown anyway
