Pistons dealt Caris LeVert for Taurean Prince and Gary Harris, is there another move coming from Langdon?
Transcript
00:00Let's get back to your open line calls.
00:01We've got a Mark in Detroit is next.
00:03Hello, Mark.
00:04Hey, what's up with you?
00:06I look at the Pistons.
00:07People look at what they did.
00:08Okay, they haven't did nothing major, but I look at the roster.
00:11I mean, OKC wins because they got four players that's shooting 40% now from three.
00:18I think Gary Harris, I think he's going to be stretched and weighed.
00:22But Torrey and Prince, they can play him at backup power.
00:25He's a 40% three-point shooter.
00:27And they had to free up some more money for Durham because I think Durham is going to want at
00:31least $40 million.
00:32But I still think there's one more move coming.
00:35So what about DeMar DeRosa?
00:38And how much money do we actually have to spend on that?
00:41I think we've got $7 or $8 million left after we give them $40 million.
00:45I think, yeah, it depends what they're going to give Jalen Dern.
00:48But it's like $45 million, I think, that they have right now before a luxury tax.
00:52They've got an exception as well.
00:53I mean, you know, DeMar DeRosa can score.
00:55He would not be the shooter.
00:57But you're right about the shooting.
00:59If you look at the major players that they have added, and I'm not sure I'd include Gary Harris in
01:03that group at this point in his career.
01:05But John Collins, he can shoot it.
01:07Isaiah Joe, he can shoot it.
01:10Torrey and Prince, he can shoot it.
01:12They haven't moved on from Duncan Robinson yet.
01:15So they've got – it's like we're going to have the same core three that they believe in.
01:20And we're going to add a lot more shooting around him, appears to be the offseason plan so far.
01:24Well, they were 29th in shooting.
01:28If they could shoot the ball, they would have beat the Cleveland.
01:32But I still think they need to go out and get one more playmaker.
01:36And I still think there's one more move because they've got 16 players under contract.
01:41Gary Harris is going to be moved.
01:43That's going to get them 15.
01:44But with Durham, it's going to be 16.
01:46So has Duncan Robinson had accepted his option or what?
01:52I haven't heard nothing about that.
01:54I mean, as far as I know, Duncan Robinson is going to be back at this point.
01:59I mean, Mark, it's a fascinating question that is on the to-do list today.
02:04And I guess you've kind of sparked the conversation.
02:06What do you think Trajan is going to do next?
02:12And everybody, like seriously, national writers, Kevin O'Connor from Yahoo, what's next for the Pistons?
02:19Got to be something bigger brewing.
02:20He tweeted that today.
02:22Jack Weinbach, an NBA writer, he thinks they're after somebody that we will get to in a minute.
02:29But you start thinking about what do you think it is?
02:35Because they have another move to be made.
02:38Like I was talking to Evan, Evan and Stoney do the Restore the Floor Piston podcast here at 97.1.
02:43So, you know, covers this team on a regular basis, talks about it on a regular basis.
02:47And I asked Evan that question today.
02:49I said, what do you think they're up to?
02:50And you know what he said?
02:51It was interesting.
02:52He said, I think they're getting Dern back and that's it.
02:56And I think the money that they have left over, and this is the least exciting thing in the world
03:01in terms of the offseason,
03:03is going to be taken to the trade deadline.
03:05And I'm not sure that isn't the smartest thing you can do, because now you are playing.
03:12You have an opportunity in NBA games to assess and then address whatever issues you have that you see developing
03:21with a new cast of characters around the core.
03:24You will have a chance to see your upgrades, and I put in quotes, your upgrades in action, and figure
03:33out what you're lacking.
03:36And instead of doing it now and trying to add something now, you are going to take it for a
03:43test drive first.
03:44And I'm not convinced that that's not the smartest thing for them to do.
03:48No, I understand what you're saying.
03:49It would be underwhelming as a fan because we want more.
03:52We've been, you know, just two weeks ago, we were talking about crazy pipe dreams of adding wild players to
03:59the mix, including Jalen Brown to LeBron James.
04:02You know, then it shifted to Trey Murphy, and now it's, eh.
04:08Well, they just traded for Torian Prince and Gary Harris.
04:12It might help them.
04:13Might.
04:13I mean, you know, both players have passed the prime.
04:15They're north of 30, I believe.
04:18But they can shoot.
04:20But none of them are going to be counted on to play, like, 25 minutes a game, I can't imagine.
04:26But it does look like they've got, I mean, a little bit better.
04:29I mean, is Torian Prince going to be better for you than Karis LeVert?
04:33Well, I mean, he's going to shoot it better.
04:36So that's what you're asking yourself.
04:38They still don't have the ball handlers, part of the ball handlers and shooters that Trajan Langdon talked about.
04:44But maybe they have that with their, with a Corey, the draft pick, or maybe, like you said, is something
04:49still to come down?
04:50I think another thing why it could be wise, it's not sexy.
04:55But come trade deadline next year, it might be awesome, too, because now you've got the money saved up and
05:01you can go and get that player, whoever you want.
05:03But the other thing it does, it allows you more time to see what you have also in-house.
05:11Like, is Danis Jenkins taking a big step?
05:14More importantly, you know, are you looking at Ronnie Holland and taking a big step forward?
05:20You know, I just call him Ronnie.
05:22Wait, is this a, I've never, I've never heard him referred to as Ronnie.
05:26We're boys.
05:27No, I mean, is Ron Holland going to take a big step forward?
05:31Is Asar Thompson going to take a big step forward offensively?
05:33And how about Jalen Durant?
05:35You know, is he expanding his game beyond the world of lobs and tip and dunks?
05:40I mean, there's a lot to look at to see over 50 games going into the trade deadline and to
05:46have that money freed up.
05:48It might be prudent to do it.
05:50It's not fun right now for all of us because we want, we want it now.
05:53We want the Trey Murphy trade.
05:55But the other thing that opens up is that other players become available that aren't available right now.
06:01Teams are going to be jockeying for position.
06:03They're going to see, you know what?
06:04We don't have a chance.
06:05We're sellers and we've got players to sell and the Pistons have parts and they have all the draft picks
06:10still.
06:11They have the aforementioned younger players that the teams might be interested as well.
06:16So maybe it is prudent to hang on to that.
06:18Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
06:21It's a, it's a fascinating scenario that's played out.
06:25First of all, I mean, Duren and the Pistons are in this staring contest.
06:29See who blinks first.
06:30First, the Pistons, everybody is speculating what they're going to do.
06:35And one writer threw out a young player that he thinks they might be chasing.
06:39We will get to that today at 1146.
06:41It's Carson Anderson, open lines, 97.
06:44One.
