00:00We need to start avoiding dropping your children off at the school, at the sports club, at the police youth
00:16clubs and believe that that is their responsibility.
00:21Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander as he delivered remarks that seemed to focus on a particular style of parenting.
00:30We prepare your children, you send them off because you don't have the time, the boat ride is more important,
00:36to go to the spa and beautify yourselves are more important, put extensions on here and extensions on there and
00:48extensions on here and extensions on here, they are more important.
00:52The Homeland Security Minister went further with this point.
00:56So when you do that, when we train them and mentor them, they come back home and then they are
01:08neglected again and taught how to smoke weed and wrap it.
01:14And then you send them back the next day.
01:16So then Mr. Shaboudi, you have to start all over again to convince them that, listen, but we taught you
01:22this yesterday, but mommy did this and daddy did this.
01:25Who am I to believe?
01:27Do I, should I believe you or the people who brought me to this world?
01:31That is a question.
01:33I hope some of you all have the answers.
01:36Emphasis was made on the importance of parents being actively involved in their children's lives.
01:44So the first line of prevention is to engage the parents who have that responsibility, not given by me, but
01:55is given by God or whoever you believe in to take us to the next level.
02:01Minister Alexander spoke during a national seminar for parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with disabilities.
02:09Your experience matters, your voice deserves to be heard, and your partnership is essential in sharing policies and programs that
02:21genuinely meets the needs of children and adolescents with disability.
02:32The seminar was hosted by the Ministry of Homeland Security and the Ministry of the People and Social Development in
02:39collaboration with the National Parent Teacher Association, the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Social Workers, and the Trinidad and Tobago
02:47Association of Psychologists.
